A bit about me…

I’ve been hooked on books since I was a kid but it got worse in my twenties, when I discovered romances–the hotter, the better. Growing up in Southern California, with lots of surfer manliness surrounded me, was certainly a good boost for reading about delicious alpha guys and the women who adore them. When I learned I had a knack for telling these stories too, I guess you could say I was doomed–though my path toward romance novelist took a few detours via a concert-reviewing gig for my college newspaper (free show tickets…backstage passes…that was a no-brainer), artist interviews for a Beverly Hills dance music mag, personal assistant work for a record producer, dance club disc jockey, and a lot of fun in the hospitality industry.

These days, I still live in California, and have found an amazing alpha guy of my own who was brave enough to marry me. We live on a street that looks like Brigadoon, with our beautiful daughter. I have the best life ever, and never forget to thank the Big Guy Upstairs for it, either.

“Oh.” I pick up my stuff that he set on the kitchen floor, but he shakes his head and takes it from me.

“Stop. You’re not bolting out of here.”

I huff and cross my arms. “What do you want, Declan?”

“Why are you with Larry?”

“There isn’t a reason.”

“Why?”

“Why did you name your daughter Clover?” I throw a question back at him.

“Don’t try to change the subject.”

“Don’t try to psychoanalyze me.”

“You know Larry’s a prick, and you’re too strong to let him put his hands on you.” Declan leans against the wall and raises an eyebrow at me. “So tell me, Amie. What the fuck?”

“I don’t owe you any explanations.”

“I think that’s the least you owe me, don’t you?”

I look around the room and avoid his eyes on me, shaking my head. “It was a long time ago, Declan,” I whisper. “I’ll go to my parents, and you can forget you ever saw me again.”

“No.”

“No?”

“You’re not leaving.”

I don’t understand. He hates me, so why the hell is he trying to help me? “Why do you want me here? We both know you hate me for what I said.”

He straightens and tilts his head. “It’s what you did, Amie.”

“Whatever.” I reach for my bags again, but he closes his fingers around my wrist, and I yank my arm away. “Let me go.”

“There she is.”

“I never left,” I snap. He flinches, and I know it was a low blow. I was just as excited to get out of here as he was. We were going to start a life and travel, see the world. We even had a list of places we wanted to go. Adventures we wanted to take together; scuba diving, skydiving, driving a racecar. And I ruined it.

He knows me too well, and I’m becoming defensive because he’s pissing me off, hitting nerves that I’m in denial about.

“Why are you with him?” he whispers.

“Declan …”

“Why?”

“Because I deserve him.” I sit on the floor, leaning against the kitchen chair. I don’t cry because I’ve accepted my fate, and along the way to discovering it, I’ve learned that tears don’t change a damn thing.

“Your father would never allow this,” I said, staring at the dress Dornan had laid out on the bed. I didn’t have my burner phone with me. I couldn’t call John. Fuck! I needed to call John. Right. Now. Dornan smirked, standing before me and tugging the hem of my dress. I resisted, holding on to that hem with everything I had. Dornan raised his eyebrows and took hold of my wrists, squeezing them just enough to show his strength. “Allow what?” I rolled my eyes, trying to shake his grip off, but he was having none of it. He tightened his fingers around my wrists, and they throbbed in protest. “A trip to Vegas. A white dress. Look at what you’re wearing!” He shrugged. “Maybe we’re going to have a nice dinner.” “It’s the middle of the morning,” I shot back. My wrists were on fire. Reed buried his fingers in his hair. The worst days were always the ones where everything happened at once. This was one of them.

Even now in this vulnerable position he could feel eyes on him. Warriors that would respond to his command, and those that were loyal to Melik. Tribe members judging his movements, determining where they sat along the line of fracture.

Not once had he expected his return to be easy. Alone he might have been able to handle it. Add in the surprise birth, the question of Melik’s role in the event, the heaping amounts of the white world he’d added to the Tribe in a few hours, and of course the complication of a particular white woman. He was surprised he hadn’t died of an aneurysm from the stress.

For just five minutes he wanted to pretend none of it existed.

Maybe Noelle had a point. There was no way he felt any sense of control right then. Not even a little bit.

Years of training had taught him to never give in to such moments of abandon. There wasn’t a time in his life Reed could remember not being in full control of his emotions and reactions.

All the training had primed him for a role as Medicine Man.

Now that was a role he wouldn’t take on. In fact, he had to embrace the role of Chief. A role that required even more control.

He rose slowly.

Total abandon. Noelle’s words whispered through his head.

Reed could hear the Cougar growl in approval and closed his eyes as the Animal surged forward. It was very possible his eyes were yellow now, but he didn’t care. He focused on Noelle as she continued her humming with a gentle sway to her shoulders.

He stalked toward her, silent as he’d ever been trained to be. The Cougar, despite his impatience, remained restrained.

Noelle didn’t react to his approach until he stood over her. The music faded away with a small gasp as her eyes opened. “Oh.”

Being forward wasn’t his strong suit, and right then he didn’t trust himself to speak. An offer of his hand was the best he could do without something over the top happening.

The standard bright smile she’d worn from day one was nowhere to be found. In its place her lips curved into a simple, quiet, understanding smile that somehow got outweighed by the returned hunger in her gaze. Her hand slipped into his and she let him pull her to her feet.

With a gentle tug he pulled her across the path to what had been his parent’s house. He knew it still sat empty, cleaned weekly by Snowbird herself. It was close, and empty. That was all he could think about when he led Noelle inside.

The moment the door clicked shut, his control snapped. With a loud thump they hit the door, lips locked in a heated embrace. In his head the Cougar growled its approval when her nails cut along his back.

She was the first to break the kiss. Her breath came in ragged rasps as she held him back just enough to keep him from claiming her lips again. “No strings.”

“Total abandon.”

With that, her legs wrapped around his waist and he was lost in her touch. The heat took over; the Cougar came out to play.
