EXCERPT ONE

She had no plans to stop, her mind already back on the magazines and papers she’d found in the trunk and the mysteries they contained. The past week had been filled with enthusiastic reunions with Cole; enjoying every moment with him she could while she could. Her fears of what he’d do once he learned of her condition left her grasping at every moment together, and left little time for solving riddles.
While she’d thoroughly enjoyed every moment in Cole’s arms, the pressing need to learn the truth took precedence. Soon enough she’d be unable to deny to him what was happening, the child inside would be obvious. In her heart she knew Cole wasn’t ready for another child, and likely never would be. He wasn’t even ready for a real relationship.
As much as she treasured his support and caring in the past weeks, she would need to start pushing him away. She had no other choice. If she gave him freedom now he couldn’t accuse her of trying to trap him.
A sharp whistle pulled her from her thoughts. She slowed Tempest to locate the source. Before she could focus on what was happening, Cole had leapt into the saddle behind her. She gasped, yelping when he grabbed the reins and spurred the horse into a much faster clip than she was comfortable with. “Cole!”
He didn’t say a word, just raced down the road toward her house.
“Cole. What are you doing?”
A tug on the reins pulled them to a stop in front of her house and he swung out of the saddle. The moment Jane shifted to get herself down, Cole reached for her.
She tried to protest the impulsive move. “I’m not—”
His lips captured hers, sealing her protest with searing heat she felt to her core. Without clear thought, her body responded to his insistence eagerly. He tugged her body tight against his and backed toward the door.
She gasped for air when he released her from the brutal, claiming kiss. Her protest morphed into a sharp yelp when he scooped her up and carried her toward the bedroom. She tried to push against him, and when he laid her out on the bed she hit him hard in the chest. “What in the hell are you doing?”
“You gotta ask?” He sucked in her lower lip and nibbled at it. She didn’t want to respond, for she knew what she needed to do, but her nerves sprang to life against her better judgment. His lips trailed down her chin to her throat.
She couldn’t help but arch into the warmth of his lips. Her brain spun in circles, alive from the fire of his touch, though she tried to force it back to calm. After all, this action wasn’t of affection, it was of another emotion. “Acting on your jealousy?”
“I ain’t jealous.” He found the sensitive patch of skin beneath her ear. His capable fingers popped open the buttons of her bodice faster than ever.
“Laying claim to me again? Marking your territory?” The bitter words tumbled from her lips before she could stop to think, but his possessive claiming wounded her pride. The words hit their mark, and he froze above her. She tried to still her nervous, rapid breathing.
His smirk twisted into a grimace. Nose to nose with her, he remained still for several moments before forming a reply. “No one could own ya.”
“It’s good you know that.” She’d stilled her breath and dug deep into the pain of what she knew would be their upcoming downfall to force venom into her words. It should have been more difficult, but his ministrations had made her ache for him. Unsatisfied libido had always made her grumpy, and forcing herself to say the words she knew would anger him made her even more so.
In one slow, painful gesture, he pulled the weight of his body off hers. He’d planted on either side of her head, and the anger of her words had settled in his eyes. “Always did.”
“Good. Always remember.” Her heart twisted when he stood and walked away. Why was she torturing herself? Why couldn’t she just tell him? End the grief. Let him make the choice she knew he would. Her heart would break either way, why not do it faster rather than slower? “Cole.”
His footsteps stopped somewhere in the next room. Silence fell, wrapping around her heart and squeezing it still.
“I’m pregnant.” There. She’d said it. Surprisingly, she wasn’t panicked or giddy, or much of anything. A calm acceptance settled inside, perhaps because she’d already run through every possible outcome of this scenario in her head. The persistent silence ripped through the calm she’d felt until a tear trembled up and escaped down her cheek. She clung to a small vestige of the rare feeling of hope that he might, perhaps, not do as expected.
“Who should I congratulate? Or do ya even know? Could be anyone’s right?”
That lingering smidgen of hope shattered into a million pieces, each one shearing through her already bleeding heart with razor sharpness. The pain pooled into a dark pit of growing anger. How dare he?
She flew to her feet, ignoring the shooting pain in her ankle to storm to her bedroom door. All set to yell at him, the fear in his features shocked her silent. None of his angry accusation matched the feared lines creasing his face.
Dread and hope curled into a pained grimace as he dragged his normally strong, fierce gaze from hers. When he couldn’t even look her in the eyes, she knew. He wanted her to agree with him, he needed her to; he was too weak to face the possibility of having, and losing, another child.
Tears filled her eyes, but she dug down deep to give him this one last thing before she released him. Her hand gripped the door – pain, fear, loneliness, and revulsion racked her body as she forced forward the first outright lie she’d ever told him. “Yes. It could be anyone’s.”

EXCERPT TWO

An all-too familiar, sultry voice interrupted Norman’s reply. Jane’s voice wove through his body and called him like a siren called a sailor. “Norman, I’d like to send a telegram.”

Cole froze in place. Her gasp jolted him back into motion.
Norman’s smile broke through his grump, the corners of his eyes crinkling as he focused on the door. “Sure thing, Jane. Let me just finish up with Cole. Where’s it goin’?”
“Yankton.”
He immediately thought of her trunk, the mention of Yankton. Could she have found answers? He didn’t care, he shouldn’t care. Cole’s grip on the box in front of him tightened, crumbling the edge. He nodded Norman. “Ain’t no business left here, Norm. Gotta get back. Girls are waiting on me.”
She stiffened, her pale features drawn. Her eyes wore dark shadows like skirts, and she appeared thinner somehow despite her condition. As her fingers gripped her reticule, and her lips tightened until they almost disappeared, a twinge of guilt hit.
No, he’d spent enough time allowing feelings he never should have. He wouldn’t let her affect him anymore.
The simple act of walking past her stirred up enough air to fill his nose with the scent of her perfume. His heart plummeted to his stomach. So often that scent had wrapped around him. He glanced over his shoulder and found her eyes on him.
Caught, she pulled her gaze away and rambled on about her telegram. Though she’d turned away fast, he’d see the tear on her cheek. The tear he knew he’d caused. He stormed from the depot, several colorful curses escaping under his breath. No matter what, he’d push away the emotions again. He had to.
There was no way he was going through the hell of having a kid. Not that he knew it was his. She’d told him as much. Just what he’d expected to hear. No, what he’d wanted to hear. What he’d needed to hear to make his escape.
He stopped in the middle of the street, feeling like he’d just been gored by a bull. She’d made it easy for him. Played on his anger. It had been so easy to leave. For him.
“Damn her.” He resumed his fast pace through town. He’d told her everything; he’d let her in. She knew as well as he did that he couldn’t handle it. The pain. The destruction to his life.
The joy.
How could he have forgotten that?
The joy was gone. It was gone because he’d allowed himself to feel it. What a mistake it had been to let Jane in. Now he was feeling joy wrenched away again.
Wrenched away?
More like pushed away. He’d forced her hand, and she’d forced it right back. She’d shown his weakness in one fell swoop, and let him have his out. She hadn’t really been finding comfort in others, had she?
If she hadn’t, the child was his.
The child was his. He knew it, maybe he’d known it all along.
“Cole,” Graham barked.
He startled from his thoughts to glare at Graham. “What?”
“Why are you just standing there? We got a business to run. Them the cigars?”
“Yeah. Here.” He tossed them on the bar and raced up to his room where he slammed the door. It was empty again. It had been the first thing he’d done that day, removing anything that had made the room seem homey. All the little touches Jane had put there. It had been a comfort to go back to what was familiar.
The barrenness.
Solitude.
Now it felt cold. Too empty.
He opened his nightstand drawer and reached inside. The book was hers. The first thing she’d left in his room. He’d never given it back. She’d never asked for it.

Whitman.
That’s what she’d said it was, at least. He didn’t know.
He sat on the edge of the bed, the book heavy in his lap. After a long sigh, he dropped back onto the bed.
There was no way he could go through it again. It was too much pain.
But not having Jane there was causing pain too.
It was too late. He’d let her in and there was no road now that wouldn’t have pain.
He needed a way to make it right. To have her close again. If it was possible.
Would she even want him now?

Calli Ryley lost everything when her last relationship went south—her job, her lover, and she hightailed her way all the way to Lake Point to escape. She’s steeled her heart against love, and most certainly wouldn’t get involved on the job again. The best thing she can do is keep working with her head down and no sights on love.

Dee Parker has spent the past year away from Lake Point dealing with illness and death. She returns home ready to dive back into life. When she first sets eyes on the sexy cowgirl Calli, she’s instantly smitten. The cold reception Calli gives her leaves Dee ready to move on.

Could one seemingly simple business trip turn their luck in love around? Or will love get snowed in?

Deanna rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands. All of the information in front of her made her eyes cross. She knew eventually she’d get a handle on the whole breeding business, but at first glance it was a complicated mess of bloodlines and pure money.

The money she could handle, the pedigrees were convoluted and confusing to a newbie. She pondered asking Calli for help, but then thought better of it. After the first couple of days of overt flirtation, Deanna had pulled her head out of her ass. Maybe she’d read Calli wrong, maybe not, whatever the reason flirting clearly put the girl off. Instead, Deanna had settled into a routine that didn’t involve much contact with the sexy cowgirl.

When she had seen Calli, Deanna had been the consummate professional. After all, she was an adult and knew how to act with some decorum when she needed to. Didn’t mean she liked it any. Having fun was a much better way to pass the day.

She groaned in frustration and leaned back in her seat to stare at the ceiling. “I am smart enough to do this. I really am.”

“Uh, okay.” Calli’s cute little drawl interrupted Deanna’s self-chastising moment. If Deanna wasn’t completely delusional she would have sworn there was a hint of laughter in Calli’s voice. “Don’t recall saying you weren’t.”

“Oh, no. You didn’t.” Deanna sat upright and remembered her resolve to not act like a fool around the woman in front of her any longer. “I was yelling at myself. Maybe I’m just trying to think too much.”

“Wouldn’t be the first person to do that. Most of us do.” Calli’s gaze settled on the papers scattered on the desk. “Hank wouldn’t have hired you if you couldn’t do it. That man’s got a good business head on him.”

“Yes he does, everything is in great order for me. It’s this breeding info. The family trees and such are making my eyes cross.” Deanna flipped through a few of the folders on her desk. “And Hank said something about one of the broodmares no longer being able to breed, and having to replace her and finding a few more for the ones that are aging out.”

“You don’t have to worry about that so much. I know the circuit and the horses well enough. I’ll let you know what we need.”

“But I need to understand it.” Deanna pursed her lips. “I’m not your boss and you aren’t mine, so we’re going to have to work together on this. I need to know what I’m spending the businesses money on.”

“Fair enough.” Calli hesitated at the door a minute longer before she entered to sit across from Deanna. “Did Hank tell you who I’ve got my eye on to bring in?”

“Yes, let me find the list.” Deanna pulled open a drawer and pulled out the pad she’d written notes on in her lengthy talks with Hank. “Sorry, I haven’t had time to transfer all my notes to the computer. Let’s see, there’s one in California that’s going to cost a pretty penny to ship.”

“But she’s not bred yet and her line hasn’t touched any of the ones we usually work with. It’ll widen our birth and bring back some repeat business we might have lost in the next few years. It’s worth the money.”

Deanna nodded at the logic. “Are there any others like that?”

“Probably not on the list he gave you. I have a lead on another in Colorado. She’s not ready yet for breeding, but I’d like to bring her in anyway.” Calli leaned on the opposite side of the desk, her face brightening the more they talked about the horses. “She’s a beauty, too. Unfortunately, she’s also fast so they’re thinking of training her to race instead.”

“That’s unusual, isn’t it?”

“Yes. Like I said, she is fast. That could also drive up how much she’d be worth on the breeding circuit. Get a fast stud and a fast broodmare and that ups the ante.”

“Interesting. What’ll it take to convince them to sell her to us?”

“I’m working Carl over best as I can. He’s waffling, though.”

Deanna pursed her lips as she thought it over. From what she knew, a young mare with a long life of foaling ahead of her could be good for business. “Would it help if we went and met him directly?”

“We?” Calli grew cold immediately and sat back. “I can handle it myself.”

“I’d like to see how this works.”

“Then you can come with when I go over to the next county and talk to the Billings. No need for both of us to go flying.”

Deanna couldn’t comprehend the attitude change in Calli over the simple suggestion. “You do business with the Billings all the time. This Carl is new. I’d like to be involved.”

Calli’s lips thinned and she turned her gaze away.

“I promise not to step on your toes.”

“Fine.” Calli rose with a heavy sigh. “Let me know what you work out so I can let Carl know we’re coming.”

“All right, then.” Deanna furrowed her brow as Calli left the office without ceremony. Well that went downhill fast.

Calli loves her job but the cold is really getting to her. She loves the ranch and really wouldn’t have it any other way. When Hank hires Dee as the new office person, Calli goes into self-destruct mode. The two travel to Dominion Falls to make a deal about a horse for the ranch and they really get to know one another. Back home, Dee finally makes her move and of course Calli runs. When confronted, Calli lets her fears go and gives Dee a chance. I loved the book. Excellent writing with a heartbreaking story as the background. This author is fabulous.

Cali, a cowgirl with a painful past and Dee, an office manager with patience and a killer smile are the focus of this story. Fate lends a helping hand in this relationship with a needed business trip coupled with a surprised blizzard. It was a treat seeing Cali begin letting down her defenses and allowing herself to trust her feelings and accept the love flowing her way.

BOOK TOUR ~ Escaping Humanity (The Exceptionals #1) by Sarah Cass & Mary Terrani

The Exceptionals Book 1

Exceptionals are being hunted for slaughter.

It’s the year 2023, and a government-created virus meant to produce an army of super soldiers has activated a hidden gene in half the
population. The end resulted gave them superhero-like powers. Decades of covert operations, followed by an all-out war to destroy this new race has left the country decimated. One group of these Exceptionals is out heal the world. They take in stranded Exceptionals, and fight against the army trying to kill them all.

Their efforts lead them to Annie, a young woman in New York City who doesn’t realize the danger she is in. The rescue takes a side turn that leaves them in a scramble to save her life.

Meanwhile, hidden deep in the compound of General Steele, the man in charge of the soldiers, two key Exceptionals are being held against their will. They have a plan for escape, which could lead to freedom, or certain death.

These two branches of rebel Exceptionals are in a fight for their lives. Only problem is, in a world that is out of glass slippers and
fairy godmothers, not everyone can make it out alive.

The flight to the compound seemed normal, uneventful even.

As uneventful as escaping from soldiers chasing them, a woman that could sprout wings and fly, a decrepit old barn, and an aircraft that appeared to be held together by duct tape and bubble gum could possibly be.

Annie wondered briefly if bubble gum still existed. Contemplations like that were the best distraction she had as she kept her eyes screwed shut for the duration of the flight. One hand clutched the bag on her lap while the other dug into what was left of an armrest.

Solid ground. Was that too much to ask?

The other passengers talked the entire flight. No, they picked on each other. Now and then for a brief moment she could have sworn she heard a smile, almost laughter, in James’ voice. Such a thing seemed unlikely. She held the conviction he’d been born scowling.

“Anna, we’re here.” James spoke close by. His voice stirred her to open her eyes. He towered over her, arms folded across his chest.

Mission accomplished and he still appeared permanently pissed off. “And where is here exactly?” Did he ever smile? Annie rolled her neck from side to side in an effort to get rid of some of the stiffness.

“Montana. What’s left of it anyway. As wide open and unpopulated as the state was, it didn’t get hit as bad as states with major cities.” He tapped his foot in a quick cadence against the metal floor. “We need to move.”

“Right. You’re the impatient one.”

“Look, Anna…!” The growl re-emerged.

If James stood as the group’s version of a welcome wagon, the reason for their dwindling numbers couldn’t be clearer. “It’s Annie. Please. Anna is my grandmother’s name.”

A scoff escaped his gritted teeth.

She pushed on the armrest, not at all surprised when it tumbled to the floor. Her eyes fluttered shut. “Sorry.”

“It’ll get fixed.”

She muttered under her breath, “So much for finding my parents before I kick the bucket.”

“Anna—Annie,” he corrected himself. “You can’t think like that. It could still happen.”

“Right. Next, you’re going to tell me Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy are all downstairs.” She pressed her lips together tight in an effort to reign in her emotions. Even with that, her fingers shook on their way to grab the strap of her bag. “I’m sorry. This whole thing is just…well I don’t know what it is.”

James’ expression softened. “I know it’s a lot to take in. I can explain more once we are inside where it’s safer.”

For the first time since they landed she realized they were alone. “Where are the others?”

“They had something to take care of.”

So, they left her stuck with tall, dark, and angry? Great. “Lead the way, then.”

Off the plane they wound up on a broken-down street. Several houses lined what she imagined had once been a nice, suburban sort of street bustling with kids and soccer moms in their SUV’s. Hard to believe it would have been only a year ago when the world had blown up. The way nature had already taken over, it seemed like ages since the street had seen any regular traffic.

They walked into the first house on the right without so much as a knock. She wanted to ask why they didn’t stop in any rooms, but held herself back. Despite the fact that he led her straight toward a door that framed steps descending into a basement, she followed him.

She’d already come this far and really, where would she go? A maniacal sort of giggle filled with nerves and humor over the craziness bubbled to the surface. “You pull me from my home to a place in the middle of nowhere and the first place you take me is a basement. This isn’t serial-killer worthy at all.”

“Hard to have serial killers with so few people to kill…and not everything is as it seems, smartass.” The barest hint of a smile graced his features before he wiped it clean away.

“Careful. You almost smiled there. I might begin to wonder if you were feeling well or not.” Another laugh reached for the surface. “Sorry. If I don’t laugh I’m liable to end up thinking I’m in an episode of the Twilight Zone.”

James jogged down the steps without turning around. “We all do whatever we have to get by.”

He led her straight to a dead end. The room looked like any normal basement before or after the War. Shelves with boxes and canned foods lined the walls. A few bags here and there on the shelves and floor lent to the general idea of a still-functioning home.

Then James reached through a few of the boxes and things got weird again.

The wall moved. It swung inward to reveal a wide metallic corridor. The bags remained on the floor where the shelves had been, but with a simple step over them they’d be in whatever that place was. Before the wall had moved, Annie had seen no sign of a seam in the wall at all.

She blinked several times. “And this day just keeps getting weirder.”

“You haven’t seen the half of it yet.” James motioned for her to go through ahead of him. “Every house in the area has an access port like this.”

“Everyone is underground?”

“Not everyone. We take turns staying topside. We’re still human, we still need sunlight.” He paused at an intersection in the tunnel. “That leads to the house next door.”

“But it looks so deserted up there.” She scanned the tunnel as they kept walking. After walking a few feet, a familiar sensation hit her like a ton of bricks. Once she hadn’t felt in a while. A rush of energy that left her near giddy. Computers—lots of them. “You have a full functioning computer network.”

“Yeah. No getting any ideas, though. Cy has them locked down tight. You won’t get anywhere no matter how hard you try.”

“No ideas. It’s just an odd feeling after not being able to feel it for so long.” She trailed her fingers along the wall. The construction impressed her. “The tunnels haven’t always been here, I’m assuming. So how did they get here?”

“We have a few mutants that are good with that sort of thing.” He shrugged as he punched in a code to open the next section. “We have a few…uh…containment cells in here.”

“Containment cells? I thought you said you were the good guys.” Annie took a step away from the door. She searched for another path they could take.
