Blurb:

Love can be as sweet as honey, or it can sting like a bee.

Bo Smith knows that if you go looking for honey, you get stung, so he has his life just how he wants it. No hassles, no complications, and no heartache. As the handsome high school athletics coach, he would be the pick of the small town he grew up in…if he was into commitment, or dating…or even calling back. But he has sworn off anything resembling a future and his mind isn’t going to change.

Then his eyes lock on the new girl in town…She’s beautiful, intelligent, and full of surprises. Just the kind of complication he has been avoiding.

Sophia Brown is looking for the sweet simple life. She has it all planned out. Getting used to life alone isn’t easy, but she has her garden, her bees, and her dog Triton to tend to. It’s the fresh start she’s been dreaming of, surrounded by nothing but open fields to stare at all day.

Nothing at all…unless you count the high school football team and their distractingly handsome coach, practicing right across the street.

But when sparks fly, Bo must choose between the sting of his past or the sweetness of the future.

He may just find that honey tastes good on everything.

EXCERPT:

“No, no, no! Do not do this. Come on Triton,” I beg as I push him by his rear out the front door.He grunts, stopping to lie down on the doormat panting. Looking up at me with his big caramel eyes, he pleads: ‘Help me mama.’

I huff and blow my bangs out of my eyes. Darn dog plays me like a fiddle. “Please Triton, mama will give you a cookie.” I step in front of him, bracing my legs, and tug on his leash. “Baby come on, let’s go bye bye’s,” I plead with him.

His response is a groan and then he flops down on his side.

“Ugh…don’t do this now!” I growl down at him with my hands fisted on my hips.

He wags his tail twice and paws at the air before me.

“King Triton, you get up right now! You are a bad boy.” I use my stern voice with him.

He wags his tail and then lets out a whimper.

I furrow my brows and get down on my knees, bending over him, “Come on baby, the doctor is going to fix you right up,” I whisper as I scratch his face.

He responds with a grunt and licks my face, “Lord your breath stinks. What the hell did you eat today?” If only he could answer, my life would be so much easier right now.

I push myself up off the floor and stand on my porch looking around. Even with Triton being a pain in the ass, the beauty of my new neighborhood is breathtaking. Surrounded by mountains and wildlife, it’s idyllic and I drink it in, the crisp morning air filling my lungs. The moment I stepped foot into the town it felt like home. My Mom was right when she said I belonged back here. Her home town. My shoulders slump as I still feel the loss of my parents.

A chorus of shouts fill the air and pulls me from my sorrow. I grumble to myself, “Perfect location, right next to a field. My lily white ass it is.”

Triton lets out another grunt.

“Right, focus Sophia,” I tell myself. What the heck was I thinking getting a dog this big? “Come on boy you have to get up, mama can’t lift you.” I tug on his leash again and he doesn’t move an inch, just lets out a sigh.

I look across the street, to the ‘field.’ It’s seven am, on a Saturday no less, and high school football practice is already in full swing. I swallow and thank baby Jesus that in the week since I’ve been here, I haven’t shrieked at the boys or Mr. Holy Hotness their coach for being so loud in the mornings. Plus, who am I kidding? I’ve enjoyed watching him work out with the kids.

“Hello, can one of you boys help me?” My voice echoes across the street.

Fifty something heads turn my way. Oh.

I lift my chin up higher. “Can someone help me lift my dog? Please?”

Heads turn as they look back to their stoic coach who’s flipping through a book, studying it behind dark sunglasses. He looks up and nods his head once at the group of boys and they’re off.

Three boys come running across the street, one steps ahead of the others.

“Hello ma’am, I’m Bobby. That is Pete and Bubba.” He says as he points to the other two.

“Hey guys, I’m Sophia Brown.”

“Hello Sophia,” says Bubba in a high-pitched voice as his feet shuffle back and forth.

Bobby smacks him in the arm, “Your mama would have your head.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Brown.” Pete says.

Miss Brown? I can’t be much older than these boys. I press my lips together to hold my laughter back. Triton grunts on the floor bringing the attention back to him. I kneel down beside him.

“Is he a Saint Bernard?” Bubba asks.

“No, he’s a Bernese Mountain Dog.”

Triton’s tail thumps against the door.

I shake my head and murmur, “Good boy.” I scratch his face and then look up at the boys. “Can you help me get him into the truck?” I point over to it in the driveway.

“Sure,” Pete says with enthusiasm.

“Hey Triton, these gentlemen are going to help you into the car, okay baby?” The boys step closer and Pete joins me at the front while the other two head down by Triton’s tail.

“Okay, you both balance his back side while we get him from up here,” I say as I slide my hands under him.

Everyone gets in position and Triton turns his head to the two boys by his rear and lets out a little growl. Each of the boys pull away from him immediately.

“Triton! That is a bad boy!” I look at the boys apologetically. “He isn’t mean guys, just a bit grumpy today. Can we try again?”

They cautiously make eye contact with each other and nod their heads, putting their hands back under Triton. He turns his head and shows his teeth to Bubba and Bobby.

Their eyes go wide and they quickly back off, Bobby looks at me, “I’m sorry Miss Brown, but I don’t want to get bit.”

I nod, “I understand. I’ll figure something out.” I say with more confidence than I feel.

They stand up and back away from Triton and he shows his teeth at them once more with a low growl.

“King Triton, you stop that right now.” He sheepishly looks at me and howls, then plops his head down.

The three boys just stand there, “It’s okay, I can get him to move. You boys go back to your practice and thank you for trying.”

They look at each other and then back at the practice field, “Sorry, Miss Brown.” Pete sighs and then they silently leave. I stand back up and look down at him thinking about what will get him to move. Cheese is the first thing I can think of. I step over him, go back into the house and run down the hall to the kitchen. Grabbing a slice of cheese from the fridge, I slam the door and turn back. I can see Triton’s ears perk up as I unwrap the cheese, crinkling the wrapper.

“Here baby, mama has cheese.”

The damn dog doesn’t even turn around, but as I step outside I happen to look across the field where the three boys are animatedly pointing back at Triton as they talk to their coach. He hands one of the boys his book and then looks back at me, or at least I think he does. He has to be one of the only people I know that looks good in aviators. Damn good in fact.

He starts walking toward me and suddenly my mouth feels as if I’ve been sucking on cotton balls. I swear I can hear that song from the movie Top Gun playing. Is he walking in slow motion? No, he can’t be. I can’t take my eyes off him as the lyrics take my breath away teasingly echo in my head. As he approaches me, I try to gather myself and give him a welcoming smile.

“You might want to stop your dog from eating that cheese,” he states flatly with an upstate accent.

I look down at Triton as he stretches his neck to steal the cheese right out of my hand, noisily scarfing it down. I frown at him.

He groans.

I throw my hands up in the air, “Your belly hurts you big dope. Why did you eat more?”

The coach clears his throat.

“Oh sorry. Hi, I’m Sophia.” I put my hand out.

He looks down and takes it in a quick firm grasp, letting it go just as fast. “Hey, I’m Bo. Did you need some help with your dog?”

“Yes, I, uh…yes.” Still feeling the heat of his hand on mine, I manage an “it’s a pleasure to meet you,” before slowly moving my eyes down to Triton so that I can get a good look at him. Damn, they invented Levi’s for a body like that. Heaven.

Triton whimpers and rolls on his back.

“What’s wrong with him?” Bo asks with an eyebrow raised.

I sigh.

“He has a bad habit of eating anything and everything he can get his teeth into.”

“Ah, I see. You’re new here, right?”

I can’t see the expression on his face with those glasses on. “Yeah, word travels fast huh?”

“Sweetheart, the minute the house sold, tongues were waggin’.” He gives me a crooked smile.

“Good to know. Would you be able to help me lift him into my truck?”

“Sure, are you bringing him into the vet in town?” He runs a hand through his hair and rests it on the back of his neck.

“I was going to drive him to his old one since I haven’t been able to get in to meet the vet here yet.”

Triton looks up at me letting out a part whimper, part bark.

“Quit being dramatic,” I chide throwing my hands in the air.

Bo chuckles. “He has some personality. How far is the drive?”

“Slightly over two hours.”

He pauses then tilts his head to the side. “The vet here is excellent, would you like me to call in a recommendation?”

I tuck a stray piece of hair behind my ear and smile.

“You think they’d see us?”

“I think I can get you in.”

“I would love that, thank you so much for your hotness…I mean kindness!” I close my eyes, what the fuck?

He emits a deep laugh and pulls a phone from his back pocket, quickly sending a text off. “Come on, let’s get this boy into the car.”

“Okay, I’ll grab his upper half,” I indicate as I bend down by Triton’s head.

“You just get the door to the truck. What’s his name?” He gestures down.

“Triton, well King Triton. He only gets called the full name when he’s been bad, like now.” I look down, “You’re a very bad boy.”

His rolls to his side, his tail thumps on the doormat and he paws at the air again.

Bo cracks a grin.

“Alright buddy, you ready?” He squats down and puts his arms around Triton.

He growls low.

“King Triton.” My shoulders slump with exasperation.

Bo pulls a hand away from Triton and holds it up to me for silence. He then looks down at Triton and growls right back in his face. Triton’s tail stops wagging and he tucks it between his legs. Bo then with a grunt, picks him up and cradles him like a baby.

“Isn’t he heavy?” I question in shock.

“It’s fine–”

He doesn’t manage to complete his words before Triton licks his face.

Triton’s tail swings back and forth as he keeps on licking Bo’s face while the poor guy carries him to the truck. Bo stops when Triton’s next swipe goes over his sunglasses leaving a big wet streak mark on them.

I cover my mouth as I snort with laughter.

“A little help here?” he requests as he tries to pull his head back from Triton’s lick attack.

“Oh, here, let me,” I offer and step closer pulling the glasses off his face.

I freeze, my knees threaten to buckle from the heat of his gaze. Bo’s eyes are a sky blue and scorching like a hot summer’s day. I can’t take my eyes off him. Triton, the brat of a dog, knows I am drooling over him and interrupts us with a whine. I release a breath I didn’t realize I was holding.

“I meant the dog, but if you can hold those while we get this guy in the truck?”

“Yes, let me open the door.” I turn around and jog over to the truck. Swinging the door wide open, I look back and see him striding with Triton in his arms. I stand back as he sets him in the back cabin and I am blessed with the rear view of him.

“Oh my,” I whisper, my mouth dropping open at the perfect sight.

He sets Triton down with ease.

“Is something wrong?” Bo probes, his brows raised high, making his forehead crinkle with concern.

“Not a thing.” Good job Sophia, he almost caught you gawking at his behind. But what a lovely behind it is.

“Would you like me to drive?” He takes his glasses out of my hand and starts to clean them on his T-shirt.

His shirt lifts slightly and I get a peek at his abs. My face heats and I wipe the sweat off my forehead. I want to see more, but Jesus, get it together Sophia! You’re supposed to be focusing on Triton, not the coach’s magnificent body.

“Are you sure you have the time?” I glance over at the football field filled with athletes.

“Yeah, they’ll be alright.”

“Thanks so much for your help, but if you need to stay here I’m sure I can find someone to help at the vet office.”

He looks down into my eyes for a moment, then puts his aviators back on, breaking the contact. “How about you sit in the back with Triton and I’ll drive?”

“Sure, since you know where you’re going.” I inwardly sigh with relief. “Thanks.” I reach into my front pocket, fishing out my keys. “Here, you’ll need these.” I place them into Bo’s open hand and the second our skin touches a spark goes through me. I pull it back quickly and rub my palm frowning. What the hell was that?

Bo frowns. “Static,” he states gruffly. “You ok?” he asks shaking his hand off.

“I’m fine.” Still rubbing my hand, I get in the back with Triton. Bo stands for a brief second at the open door looking in at us, then nods his head once and gets into the driver’s seat.

I like to write whichever weird and wonderful tale comes into my head, which makes identifying the genre difficult even for me! My first series, Alventia, are novellas centred around Keira, aka Sleeping Beauty, and her Prince Philip, along with their allies Hansel and Gretel. It’s a tale that very much told itself as I started to write it!

While I’m not writing, I work in Catering and am also an Assistant Brownie Guide Leader in the Midlands (UK). I like to bake and I love to read, and like with my writing, I read an eclectic mix of genres, and love every minute of it!

SERIES TOUR ~ Portland, ME series by Freya Barker

Series: The Portland, ME Series

Novels: From Dust, Cruel Water, Through Fire and Still Air

Author: Freya Barker

Genre: Contemporary Romance,
Multicultural, Women’s Fiction

“”From Dust” by Freya Barker is one of those special books. One of those whose plotline and characters remain with you for days after you finished it.”Jeri’s Book Attic – From Dust

“This book touches on some very serious subjects and really tugged at my heartstrings, but nevertheless, it was beautifully written. Be prepared to go through a lot of tissues, because Cruel Water is a tear jerker for sure!”Author Maureen Mayer – Cruel Water

“Through Fire was another beautiful novel by Freya Barker. One thing you can always count on is to truly feel the book, and relate with the very real characters she creates.” Author Harlow Stone – Through Fire

“In my opinion, there is nothing better than a Freya Barker book. With her final installment in her Portland, ME series, Still Air, she does not disappoint. From start to finish I was completely captivated by Pam, Dino, and the entire Portland family.” ~ Author RB Hilliard – Still Air

Pain punished her.

The bottle numbed her.

Guilt kept her trapped.

In the dark alley of a pub, the words “Please don’t” take hold of her heart and break the silence she seeks. Thinking herself beyond redemption, she tentatively grabs on to the slim thread of hope that unfolds inside of her.

Holding her secrets close, she can’t resist the comforting draw coming from The Skipper. The unconditional friendships it offers, the protective roof it provides, and the spark that its owner ignites in her—melting the frost off her heart, and slowly stripping away her resistance.

His life flows from one crisis to the next. Under the pressure of competition crowding him out of his family’s pub and the need to protect his children from the ruins of a bad marriage, he barely breathes. That is until a mane of strawberry-blonde hair and a set of big, pale blue eyes, shake him up.

He never expected the shadow of a woman he finds on the floor of his washroom to bring him the air―the balance and the light he’s been missing.
**Due to some content of a sexually explicit nature, this book is recommended for a mature audience only.**

Innocence marked her…

Violation crippled her…

Love left her raw…

The life she carefully rebuilt is challenged when she is confronted with the sins from her past. The carefully applied protection is at once ripped away, leaving her exposed and vulnerable.

Her single night of indulgence with the silver-eyed stranger is only the beginning. He sees right to the heart of her and she is unable to ward off emotions that have been deeply buried. With the sting of betrayal still fresh in her soul, she’s surprised to find herself opening up to the honest integrity of the sharp-eyed, rough-looking biker.

When he lost everyone who mattered, he was left without roots and learned to be content simply living in the moment. Completely unprepared for the feisty blonde bartender with old pain marring her clear-blue eyes, he questions his own rules of detachment, as she unwittingly finds a way under his skin.
Appearances deceive and when the masks fall away, revealing deep, dark secrets, there is nothing left but to hang onto each other and survive the storm.

Violence corroded her…

Obedience defiled her…

Fear kept her chained…

Freedom is hard to embrace when she’s never learned to trust. Yet in the span of a second, she grabs a single opportunity and runs toward it. Straight into the sanctuary of a pub at the end of a wharf.

She doesn’t understand the concept of friendship. She’s never felt the connection of a relationship. She’s as innocent as the driven snow and yet tainted with corruption. Still, she finds herself surrounded by people who accept her, without even knowing the first thing about her. But one of them is determined to dig deeper.

He treasures his friends, yet he’s steered clear of committed relationships. He likes his life comfortably predictable and entirely controlled. Until it isn’t. For months he’s avoided interacting with The Skipper’s newest addition. Perhaps realizing that once he looked deeply into those liquid brown eyes, he wouldn’t be able to turn away.

When his present and her past puts them both on the brink of change, they are forged through fire as one.

Deprival haunted her…

Regret troubled her…

Silence left her detached…

A life in the service of others is both penance and a blessing. She soothes her personal hell by pulling victims from theirs, helping them on their path to survival; never finding her own.

When a crippling blow finally evaporates her last hope, the temptation to give up is strong. Still, she can’t find it in her to turn her back on those who need her: the innocent, whose rescue is her perpetual goal.

He was blind, but now he sees how his family has sifted through his fingers. The reality hits hard when his son becomes a stranger, slipping deeper into transgression. Concern has him call on the one person he fears will see his own failures all too clearly. A woman he’s kept his distance from for his own protection.

What appeared to be an incompatible pairing, turns out the unyielding bond needed to heal them all.

FROM DUST

FROM DUST is a fantastic read…. it’s got it all, passion, tragedy, upset, a little mystery, added to romance, sexual attraction and a whole ton of heat and passion

When I was reading this unputdownable (yeah, I’ve gone there!!) book, one of my overriding thoughts was that we know day to day that tragic things hit ordinary people as happens in the story for Syd, but I’ve never ever considered the ripple effect it causes…. You think ‘that’s so sad’ but go on with your own life.
Freya’s writing made everything that happened feel so very real and raw. Jeez, how Syd ever managed to battle through all of the years she did I’ve no idea. My heart and head were all over the place while reading From Dust– so many emotions were brought to life through the story of Sydney’s life which was devastating, heartbreaking and tragic, but she is one helluva strong woman and, through the love, care and lack of judgement of those she meets at The Skipper, she rises like a pheonix from the flames and it’s wonderful to see that come through in the story.

Gunnar didn’t have the easiest of histories either, though his road wasn’t as bleak or as difficult as Sydney’s. He was a light in the darkness that she felt – though her initial impressions of him before actually meeting him weren’t quite the same! He cared and loved deeply, knew from the outset that Syd needed help and was determined to do his bit regardless of what else was going on in his own life!!

I adore the ‘family’ element Freya’s books have. We definitely don’t choose the ‘blood family’ we end up with (as Syd knows to her detriment) but the family we surround ourselves with is often more loving and supportive than those we are born to ever could be!!!!!

I love The Cedar Tree series that Freya writes and when I heard that she was writing a standalone I was excited to find out more about it. I have to admit that, of all her books to date, FROM DUST is my favourite and I hope that this fantastic book goes from being a standalone as there are a few characters that we meet in the book who I’m sure have a story of their own to tell!!!

Freya Barker has become one of my favourite authors in the short time that she has been writing and I can’t wait to see what she brings us next!!!  ~ Tracy

**********

Well I’m here again Mrs Late as Usual, middle name procrastination.

So late that many reviews have been written for the books in the Portland ME series, some beautifully eloquent and many emotional and descriptive. There is very little I can add, nothing I will say better but here’s the thing, when it’s an author who has given me the hours of pleasure that Freya Barker has, then I kind of have to get the fuck over myself and make an effort (eventually!) whether eloquent or not because reviews help the authors to get better seen on Amazon, and as a reader help sometimes if on the fence whether to one click or not, they are a personal opinion and whether rambling and nonsensical, eloquent with beauty or somewhere in between with a colourful vocabulary (just the odd fuck or two!) worth writing.

Freya Barker has fast become a favourite of mine and her first book Slim to None in the Cedar Tree series is one of my go to books to reread when I have a book hangover or I’m in a funk and nothing new is grabbing my attention, both the other two on that go to list are by Kristen Ashley (Lady Luck and Motorcycle Man). Both authors, for me, write the best Alpha male book boyfriends, strong and sexy with a side of protective and yet a vulnerability that draws you, the warmth and affection between couple, friends and family shines through and the cast of secondary characters is always outstanding. What I also love is that different series have different feels yet the core ingredients are the same, so I know chances are I will like anything new either one writes and the quality is consistent and high.

If you have read any of the Cedar Tree series then you already know that Ms Barker is happy to go where many authors fear to tread, real, disabilities, warts, issues and all the ugly of life, she does it incredibly well and you get the Happy Ever After but it doesn’t feel Disney unattainable, it’s real and in your grasp. Seamless, effortless, flawless writing. I wrote in a review for one of Ms Barker’s books and end up repeating it now every time because it’s just so true;

She dares to go where few authors will risk, writing older characters with health issues, disabilities, the reality and the fantasy seamlessly intertwined and breathtakingly beautiful.

With the Portland Me series Freya Barker has stepped up the ‘Real’, the issues dealt with are horrific, the type many people skirt around, don’t talk about, read about, or watch any media about, the shit in the world that people know happens but avoid because it makes them uncomfortable. The subtle sensitivity of Freya Barker’s writing means the emotional response hits with a visceral impact however never feels too much, too real. She tackles these subjects many will not and wraps them up in a romance that satisfies the sweet and the hot we love while bringing an awareness of horrors that happen. She has given us an absolutely beautiful raw series that celebrates the strength of the human spirit and our ability to overcome.

From Dust

Sydney is lost, after a tragic event which would change and define anyone’s life she is homeless, jobless and adrift with no support system to help.
Gunnar is doing his best to be a single parent, run a business and deal with life’s day to day battles.
Their story is not an easy read, their path is difficult, full of drama and issues, the tragedy in Syd’s past has broken her and forgiveness is not easy but when I finished this story it was with respect for the human spirit, a belief in the power of second chances and I’m not even going to apologise for lowering the tone but a total lady boner for Gunnar. That man is magnificent! ~ Rebecca

CRUEL WATER

I’m sure we all have a ‘go to’ list of authors whose books we 1-c without even needing to read the blurb. The books that, while they may be emotional and heart-wrecking roller-coaster rides, they help lift us or bring us out of a book funk… Since I read her first ever book, Freya Barker has been way up there on my list of faves ‘go to’ authors!

I flove the Cedar Tree series that Freya also writes but have to admit that the Portland, ME series is fast becoming my out-and-out favourite!

Freya has a tremendous ability to bring her characters and their situations to life in a very realistic and believable way. She writes about likable people who you can feel a pull and connection to, who have multiple layers. They run a gamut of emotions and show and experience feelings and sensations that we can all, to varying degrees, relate to. Some have difficult pasts and histories that have cut deep, caused scars, pain and damage that they hide so well but that, on occasion, come back to haunt or taunt them.

We got an inkling from meeting Viv in ‘From Dust’ (book 1) that something dark and devastating had happened in her past and that behind the smile and lightness there lurked a pain and darkness that, under the wrong circumstances, could pull her under. I loved her and my heart broke for how she felt, what she had gone through and where she could end up without the support, love and care she so deserved.

Ike had experienced his share of pain, loss and guilt and was himself lost and adrift, in need of someone to lighten his life, anchor him and heal the pain he feels.

Our couple had, what was supposed to be, a blistering one night stand but, as is often the case with life, this turned out not to be the case and they were brought together again.
They were two broken people with shattered hearts who were perfect for each other and, if they could overcome their fears and doubts, they could become whole again.

Their story, especially Viv’s, was raw, devastating and heart shredding but so powerful, emotionally charged and captivating that you can’t help but be swept up in the tsunami of feelings and emotions that it evokes and hope like hell you survive the experience.

The inclusion of character we met in the previous book – the staff at The Skipper, Pam (Viv’s friend and therapist) along with Viv’s brothers, the various friends and bar patrons all add to the palpable sense of family, community and friendship that Freya builds in her books.

The attraction, heat, passion and sexual pull between our main characters is intense and the sex is off the charts hot. One of my favourite things about Freya’s storytelling is the very healthy injection of desire, sexual appetite and need that her characters display, regardless of the age ~ as in real life, just because they are no longer horny teenagers doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have active and fulfilling sex lives!! 😉

I absolutely adored ‘Cruel Water‘. It’s another fantastic installment in the series and I give it 5 much deserved stars!  ~ Tracy

**********

Cruel Water is not an easy read, has some sensitive triggers and drew an extremely emotional response from me which is not easy, I can name on one hand the books I have shed a tear over in the last five years. There was one point in this story where I had to put it down, refused to press for the next page, lump in my throat and tears threatening, I knew what was waiting for me, knew the horror about to be confirmed and was so invested that I just couldn’t, for characters to be this alive, the story to have grabbed me so completely I am gutted, is special. Whether in book, song or film form the written word when wielded well is powerful, in content, in message, it can be thought provoking, raw, sometimes brutal, but also emotional, beautiful and in the same way that certain songs resonant with us, haunting, played time after time because something, be it the melody, lyrics, the voice, something hits us deep inside and demands a response Cruel Water is such a book. In much the same way that Hello by Adele, Clown by Emeli Sande, Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, Desperado by the Eagles, Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole feed my soul and when in a funk I return to them on a frequent basis because they have the power to change my mood and perspective, Cruel Water does the same. Ike and Viv’s story is powerful, harsh, uplifting and emotional, it’s raw, unapologetic but subtly and sensitively handled. If only every Viv in this world could find her Ike and if only those who should protect, nurture and love us unconditionally always did. ~ Rebecca

THROUGH FIRE

Madre de Dios !!! (to quote our leading lady, Ruby) Freya Barker has done it again!!

From one of, in my humble opinion, the best series EVER…. Through Fire is a gut wrenching, heart-breaking story but as we’ve come to expect from Freya, it’s also filled with hope, strength, heat and a really strong sense of family…

Ms Barker writes REAL…. Her stories are full of very real issues: at times it’s hard going and upsetting, the tales aren’t pretty and the situations our main characters (the leading ladies in particular in the Portland, ME series) find themselves in are dark, scary, totally incomprehensible, horrendously shocking and unbelievably brutal, but they are also what we read/hear about in the news (sadly on a near regular basis it seems) – they are things that we know are happening in the world around us but that we cannot begin to understand as, in the main, most of us will fortunately never be thrust into these dark and horrendous situations.

Through her writing and storytelling Freya gives us an insight into the misery and devastation that her characters experience – but she also shows us just how strong people can be that they can survive these nightmares and not only come out the other side but do so with determination, strength of character and an overwhelming desire to LIVE.

For me, Ruby’s story is the darkest and hardest to read of the series to date but she is a fantastic character who, with the support of friends and ‘chosen family’ at the The Skipper, manages to overcome her demons and look towards a future that she never considered she’d ever have..

Tim is the leading man in Through Fire – we’ve met him previously in the series and I must admit that after some of his actions and attitude in Cruel Water (book #2) he wasn’t my favourite fella but I’m happy to admit that my feelings towards his character definitely changed whilst reading his and Ruby’s book.

Packed with suspense, intrigue, attraction, heat and passion and featuring the well loved characters that we have already met in the series to date, Through Fire is an exceptional read and another fantastic instalment in thePortland, ME series.
If you’ve already dipped your toe into the writing of Freya Barker this book will be a hit with you. For those who haven’t yet tried any of her books I recommend that you give them a chance – you will not be disappointed.  ~ Tracy

**********

Ruby is one of the strongest females it’s been my pleasure to read, her story will break your heart, to even contemplate the horror of what happens to her and the age at which her life becomes unravelled is shocking and traumatic. Flawed, real, ugly at times yet compelling and riveting Ruby’s story had me rooting for her HEA, for her to see the strength and beauty of her soul not the broken and battered person circumstances made her. Tim redeemed himself completely with his handling and support for her, after Cruel Water I had him down as a bit of a selfish douche, how wrong was I and I’m happy for that!

I have been very deliberately vague with specifics because all three of these books have such impact I don’t want to give spoilers, you can see the blurb, you can see the reviews and you will make a decision on whether to one click and buy, all I’ve tried to do – no doubt ineloquently and rambling as usual – is express my feelings and emotional response to them. As I’ve said already we all ignore the uncomfortable shit sometimes, things that happen in this fucked up world that we feel if we can’t influence or are not personally affected by, move along, nothing to see here, as you were but that solves nothing and is insulting to those going through these horrors, so Bravo to Ms Barker for taking on these stories, for handling them the way she does and for raising awareness, to say “yes shit happens but how we handle it is important”, for those who inflict it, for those supporting and loving the victims and for those it happens to with the courage to overcome, stand strong and be a victim no longer. Every story is this series is inspirational, shows just how strong the human spirit can be, how, if you are truly lucky and find your “PERSON”, then the sky is the limit for new starts and a life full of love, hope, possibilities and happiness. Isn’t that what we all search and hope for? That’s a life worth living. ~ Rebecca

STILL AIR

I remember the first book of Freya Barker’s that I read – I went in to it wondering if I’d like it, hoping that I would and worrying that, gods forbid I didn’t, how could I tell her, someone that I knew and really liked, that I just couldn’t take to it…. well, the worst never happened, the story was excellent and that concern turned out to be so far from an issue that I’d actually completely forgotten my worry until I was recently looking over some of my reviews of Ms Barker’s previous books..

Ok, I’ll stop digressing and actually move on to what I want to say….

Still Air was an absobloodylutely fantastic read – let’s face it, that’s pretty much a given when it comes to this series!! The one thing you can always be sure of with Freya’s writing is that it will pull on ALL of your emotions; it’s expressive, meaningful, sarcastic, so very true to life, real, hard-hitting and heartbreaking at times and, as is the case with this series especially, the story is at points raw, painful and occasionally fugly BUT is is also sweet, hopeful, uplifting, humorous and heart-warming, her characters shows the true beauty and importance of friends and family (of choice and not just of blood – hell, at times often in spite of blood!!) and that now and again we have to wade our way through the seemingly never-ending crap continually thrown our way to get to the HEA that, in our darker moments, seems just that little bit – or possibly too far – out of reach!!

I FLOVED Still Air (just in case you didn’t get that vibe already!!) What a way to end the series!

We saw a very different side to Pam than we had previously – where before she was the strong, resilient, confident woman this time, in her own story we found that Pam had so many layers, had dealt and was still dealing with so much heartache and she suffered from as many, if not more, feeling and insecurities that the people that she took care of and supported. Afraid to open herself to anyone because she didn’t feel deserving of love, care and a happy future, she kept everyone at arms length, especially Dino – until things happen and she can no longer avoid him!
Throughout the other books in the series, Dino has been the voice of reason, the strong one who could see and read more about people that they were comfortable with but lately he hasn’t had the easiest of times himself, between his wife and all of her issues, his responsibilities to his kids and his feelings of having let his kids down and everything that happens in this book, it doesn’t seem like he has time or should be looking for anything for himself…. until he gets close to Pam and they find out that they hit it off more than either of them expected.

If you haven’t checked out the Portland, ME series, or for that matter, any of Freya’s other books you are sorely missing out!!!!

I rate this fabulous read 5* – but if I could, I’d mark it way, way higher as five stars don’t truly tell how good this book is!!! ~ Tracy

Freya Barker inspires with her stories about ‘real’ people, perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy. She is the author of the Cedar Tree Series and the Portland, ME, novels.

Freya is the recipient of the RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for best first book, “Slim To None,” and is a finalist for the 2016 Kindle Book Awards for “From Dust”. She currently has two complete series and three anthologies published, and is working on two new series; La Plata County FBI—ROCK POINT, and Northern Lights. She continues to spin story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!

BLOG TOUR ~ Screwmates by Kayti McGee

SBPR-SCREWMATES-BT.png

Screwmates, an all-new standalone, laugh out loud romantic comedy
from Kayti McGee is now LIVE!

I knew from the first time I saw Marc Kirby that I was screwed.

Big eyes, scruffy face, brown curls – yes, yes, and yes. The man is wicked hot.

He’s also my roommate, and since I work nights and he’s at class all day – it’s like living alone at half the rent.

Then an unexpected night off turns into an unexpected morning in Marc’s bed, but it turns out we can’t even figure out the screwing.

This is not great news for Marc who’s going on a “bangcation” at the end of the summer – a whole month in France that he’s planned to spend getting busy with the women of Paris.

It’s also not great news for me for obvious reasons.

With both of us needing work on our skills, there’s only one logical solution to our predicament.

Told you I was screwed.

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

Screwmates is a really great read. It’s seriously LOL funny, that antics of Marc and Madison had me in stitches!

Kayti McGee writes lead characters that are likable, down-to-earth, fairly normal and who you want to get to know.
Madison is a real klutz, her first run in with Marc proves that point, but she’s also fun, a little crazy and a total nerd. Working nights and not seeing her flatmate seemed to work for her until she was unexpectedly off work for a bit and she got to spend some time with him. Her internal musings when it came to Marc and all the things she imagined about him made great reading.
Marc wasn’t what I expected but I really liked his character. He was so sure he was boring and didn’t have much of a life and then he got to know Madison. He was a really good guy. Hard working, studious, caring, fun and definitely not as beige as he believed!

I liked that this was kind of a slow burn when it came to them getting their act together. Yeah, there were things that happened that caused things to go slower than both of them would have probably liked but nothing with this pair was ever dull!!!

Well written, engaging, sweet, hot and so funny, I loved Screwmates and can’t wait to see what’s next from Kayti!

I’m giving this great read 5 laughter filled stars!!

Excerpt:

“Come on, Nix. Just do this favor for me once.”

Carlito’s pitiful when he begs, but it’s not enough to sway me. Even though I’ve known him for two years, I still don’t trust him. “It’s too risky.”

Carlito has been on the scene for years, well established by the time I found my way into the Loft. He’s been known to deal in stolen goods, but his area of expertise usually involves massive caches of weapons. Not just guns, the big stuff too—AKs, grenade launchers, and even anti-aircraft shit. I’ve steered clear of him whenever possible. Even criminals like me have lines we don’t like to cross, and Carlito typically straddles the imaginary boundary I laid down.

“Not for a pro like you,” he argues, and I’m becoming irritated. “It’s a simple bank transaction.” His thick Spanish accent, slicked-back brown hair, and off-white leisure suit straight out of an old-school gangster film make him stick out like a sore thumb.

“There’s no such thing as simple, Carlito. Not in our world.” I turn my drink in my hands, making patterns against the cold steel table, bored with the conversation. “It’s a mistake too many people make.”

“I never knew you were a pussy, Nix.” When he says pussy, it comes out more like puh-say.

“Think what you want. Why don’t you go ask Grim? He’s been looking for some extra cash.”

“I already did.” He licks his two middle fingers and runs them over his bushy black eyebrows and scans the room. “I think I’ll go ask Freckles. She’s always up for a challenge.”

My eyes follow his, sweeping through the crowd to find Freckles. “I thought you said it was easy.”

“For you, it would be a piece of cake, but for anyone else…” His voice trails off as he slides out of the booth. “Catch ya later, Nix. Thanks for nothin’.”

I wave him off, but I keep my eyes on him as he makes his way across the room. He’s schmoozing the crowd, shaking hands and drawing attention to himself. It’s classic Carlito. Most people here want to lie low, but not him. He wants to be known. Wants people to like him. Every time I see him walking free, I’m amazed his ass isn’t behind bars from his need to be seen.

He gives a quick nod to Icepick, a man who has a thirst for blood that’d rival any vampire, and keeps moving. Smart move. Icepick isn’t the man for his job unless it involves making someone disappear, which it doesn’t.

When he stops in front of Freckles’s table and says a few words, he glances in my direction and she turns to look at me. I wink, and she gives me a wicked smile before turning back to Carlito. Freckles and I collaborated a few times, but she has no problem with arms dealers or anything that may negatively impact anyone but her. She’s all about the mighty dollar and could give a fuck about anything else.

She’s sizing him up and twirling her shoulder-length curly hair around her index finger as he chatters on, waving his hands wildly when he speaks.

Her nickname is cute, though her skills are anything but. She’s a notorious thief, but she has genius computer skills and could help him out if he earned her trust. Motioning with her hand to the seat next to her, she gives Carlito a small smile, signaling she will at least hear his proposal.

Leaning back in the booth, I place an arm across the back and lift the glass of Louis XIII Cognac to my lips, sipping it slowly and savoring every drop. I’m still watching them when Wolf steps into my line of sight. “Been a while since I’ve seen you, buddy. Can I sit?”

I nod. Wolf’s been missing for over a month, and I assumed he was arrested and turned. Normally, I wouldn’t be suspicious if someone from the Loft disappeared, but Wolf, he was too close to me to be missing without as much as a text message. “Where ya been?”

“Here and there.” He gives me a big, toothy grin and waves over the waitress. “You know how it is.” His head bobs when he shrugs.

“I do,” I tell him because I want to believe he was just out of reach, but there’s something off about his behavior tonight.

I’ve known Wolf for three years. It’s a small chunk of time, but in our world, it’s a lifetime. People come and go, disappearing because of death or prison, and time is usually counted in weeks instead of years. The best in our industry find ways to stay under the radar, and much like me, Wolf has found a way. At least, I thought so until he vanished without a trace.

BLOG TOUR ~ Broken Pieces (The Patchwork Series) by Toni Aleo

AP new - buy the book.jpg

Can be found in the Once upon midnight anthology

From the moment Oceanus von Stein, second-in-command to the Patchwork family, caught sight of Taegan Conner, daughter of the leader of the Wolves, he knew he would never love another. Only now, she has been promised in marriage to another, an arrangement to strengthen her family’s alliances — and she gets no say in the matter.
Can they find a way to be together, or will they both always be two Broken Pieces?

Take place during Pieces.

As I watch my father sit, he doesn’t do so smoothly. His movements are jerky before he folds his old, leathery hands together and his eyes scan the room. The scars are very prominent on his face and hands. All the experiments he did on himself are visible, along with the scar tissue that is ancient and freakish on him. While his eyes are bright, from the new pair he just obtained, he looks like death. And tired. Very tired.
Clearing his throat, he lets his gaze fall on me, and I meet it head on.
“I had a meeting with Kurt Conner.”
Kurt Conner.
The pack leader of the wolves.
My love’s father.
Clearing my throat, I sit up straighter as my forearms lay against the cool top of the old oak table. Before I can comment, though, he is going on. “He needed a loan for the wedding of Taegan.”
What?
My world stops.
I feel all eyes on me. My father is staring at me, waiting for a response, but I don’t have one.
Because what the actual fuck is going on?
Did I hear him wrong?
“A wedding?”
“Yeah, she is marrying some other pack leader’s son—you know how those wolves are. Wanting to unite families with arranged marriage and all that wolfish nonsense, I don’t know. But I didn’t give him the money until—”
“Until?” I gasp, my heart in my throat, my stomach on the ground, and every piece of me feeling as if I am falling into the fiery depths of hell because surely I am hearing my father wrong.
Taegan is to marry me.
“He offered up some information on Frank Kelley—”
“He hasn’t died yet?” Jonas asks, and I know it’s to give me time. To let me think, to let me process, but I can’t. Taegan is to marry someone else? She didn’t even tell me. We were together last night! Had she known? Was she playing me? Damn it, what the hell? How could she allow me to find out this way? I mean, I knew my time was running out, but hell, did she keep this from me? I’ve never experienced heartache or true heartbreak, but I’m pretty sure this feeling of my chest caving in and blowing up is just that.
She’s marrying someone else?
She isn’t waiting for me?
Gasping for breath as I try to push the bile back down my throat, I watch as my father shakes his head. “Not yet. And apparently, they are wanting to attack us in one more attempt to get the formula for him. They think they can kidnap Rebekah and use her as leverage.”
I feel Rebekah move as she squeaks. “Me?”
“You. So we are on high alert. Keep your eyes open, and, Rebekah, I don’t want you working at the bar until this is taken care of. I have a meeting with Frank Kelley on Friday.”
“Father, I’m fine at the bar. It’s owned by our family, most of our family is there, along with JJ. The Kelleys don’t even come that much.”
“Yes, but other families come to the bar, and that makes me uncomfortable.”
“I’m fine, I can take care of myself.”
He leans on his desk, and I don’t care about their melodrama. I can’t. Even though I know I should intervene, calm both sides—because my father is right, we need to keep Rebekah underground while this goes on—I can’t help but think of the fact that my love is marrying another. Someone other than me. How in the world is this fair? Why didn’t she fight them? She told me she was mine, and I was hers. Why didn’t she wait for me?
And then it’s like I’m being slapped back into reality.
She didn’t wait for me because we can’t.
We can’t be selfish and love each other because we have commitments to our families. Yes, we love each other. Yes, she is my world, and I’ll love only her. But just like I have to, she has to protect her family. I’m sure there is something more to this, and while I wish she had told me, I know I can’t be upset. I have to respect the process of our families.
Being the eldest, we have no choice.
We don’t get to be greedy.
Wow, I don’t even believe I’m trying to convince myself.
How could she?

Excerpt:

“Master Dylan, I believe you wanted to introduce me to this lovely woman.”

The shudder returned, and I was able to fight it back marginally.

I didn’t take my eyes off Master Dylan’s victorious expression as his smile grew cocky. “Get lost on the way here?”

A rough growl came from the man at the edge of the table. “It’s been a while, forgot the way.”

Master Dylan winked at him before turning to me. I hadn’t yet had the guts to see the man he’d apparently hand-picked for me.

“Haley—”

He was cut off by the man at my side. “My name’s Jensen. You can call me Sir.”

Forcing myself to continue breathing, I turned toward the man whose voice sounded a mixture of sensual anger and irritation along with a heavy dose of lust. I shifted in the booth and dragged my eyes up his holy-incredible-defined body. Dark blue jeans, perfectly fitted at the thighs and thick at the crotch, a heavy leather black belt around a trim waist and then the dips and curves of a black shirt that covered his abdomen and the curves of his chest. I caught sight of well-shaved stubble, pink lips that had two perfect points on the top, and a slightly crooked but Romanian nose.

His brows pulled so tightly together , his shoulders pulled back so tight and his stiff shoulders , all gave hints at his irritation, but it was his eyes that drew me in. Swirling pools of the deepest blue, darker than the blue sapphire ring I’d always worn on my right ring finger, threatened to undo me.

They spoke a story I wanted to instantly unravel.

My chest tightened. My God, he was sexy. So completely out of my league. I glanced at Dylan and he nodded at me. Suggesting I talk to this man? I couldn’t form words to do so.

I looked back at Jensen. His scowl deepened as he asked, “Are you going to say hello?”One brow arched. Across the table from me, Master Dylan coughed. It broke whatever spell I’d been pulled into and I looked away from Jensen, recognizing my mistake.

“Sorry, sir,”I instantly said. Amazing how inherent that one word had become. “My apologies, I’m Haley.”

I slid my palm against his and his fingers wrapped around my hand, gripping me firmly. Sparks of a freshly stoked fire poured through my body at the smallest contact. I flinched in his grasp, shocked at my reaction, but he tightened his hold.

Then he tugged me forward, pulling me to my feet until I was in front of him.

“I am not a Master, and you may look me in the eye whenever we are speaking, unless I agree to train you and we are in a scene. Do you understand?”

I continued staring at his hand wrapped around mine. He’d pulled me so easily to standing position. Air around us crackled with tension. It felt like a thousand eyes were trained in our direction yet I couldn’t look at anyone.

I also couldn’t lift my gaze to his even though he’d implied I should.

My breath sped up, chasing the thunderous racing of my heart inside my chest. “Haley,”Jensen warned. “Look at me.”

He’d commanded. I wanted to listen. He knew I was new to this. If Master Dylan thought this man was perfect for me, he would have shared my knowledge and my willingness. It was difficult, but I obeyed.

“It’s nice to meet you, sir.”I was parched, and I desperately wanted to reach for my champagne glass, but I couldn’t take my eyes off the man in front of me.

I couldn’t remove my hand from his. A similar emotion flashed through Jensen’s eyes as his gaze wandered down my body.

I didn’t consider myself overly beautiful, yet I had never lacked confidence, either. Except for the few years when I’d tried pitifully to fix a marriage that never should have happened and my confidence took a hit from that, I had parents who lavished their love on me. I had enough boys and men show enough attention to me that I knew I was physically attractive.

Jensen seemed to be searching beyond the physical, beyond the tight, short black dress that showed off toned thighs and calves from years of yoga and running.

I could have stood there for years and let him simply gaze upon me. Every area of my body that his eyes grazed over awakened.

My chest grew heavy.

A thick throbbing began at the tops of my thighs. Wetness flowed into my underwear. Beneath the flimsy lace bra and satiny top of my dress, my nipples hardened.

“I’d like to take you on a tour of the place,”Jensen said, his grip around my hand flinching for a moment.

I nodded my agreement, but he stood still, slowly arching a brow.

I cleared my throat and answered.

“Okay. Yes, that’d be great.”

His lips that had pulled tight quirked at one corner. “Yes, what?”

Oh. Right. “Sir. Yes, sir. I would like a tour, sir.”
