REVIEW – Cowboy in a Kilt (Kilted Hearts #1) by Kait Nolan

COWBOY IN A KILT

Kilted Hearts #1

Kait Nolan

Release Date: January 13

A cowboy without a home

Robbed of the family ranch that should have been his legacy, Raleigh Beaumont is a man with no roots and no purpose. When a friend drags him to Vegas, he figures he’s got nothing to lose. But after a hell of a lot of whiskey and a high stakes poker game with a beautiful stranger, he finds himself the alleged owner of a barony in Scotland.

An heiress with a crumbling heritage

When her brother’s bride disappears just days before the wedding that’s meant to save their ancestral home from the mad marriage pact that’s held their family captive for generations, Kyla McKean believes they’ve been granted a reprieve. Until she finds out about the new, single—male—owner of Lochmara and knows she’s next on the chopping block or ownership of both their estates reverts to the crown.

A modern answer to a three-hundred-year-old problem.

Raleigh’s lost his land once. He’s not about to lose it again. Not even because of some lunatic pact made centuries before he was born. Kyla’s desperate to save Ardinmuir. She agrees to marry him on one condition: They wed for one year to satisfy the pact, then get a quick and quiet divorce. There’s no stipulation against it, and they’ll both get what they want.

But this displaced Texan and his fiery bride are about to find so much more than they bargained for.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

I went into Cowboy in a Kilt both looking forward to it and not being entirely sure ….. Being a Scot, I find I’m often disappointed in books where the characters are Scottish and the writer obviously hasn’t done their homework fully and the language/dialect/words/location just don’t fit or are just plain wrong and that drives me crazy! While I know I will have to suspend some belief reading certain fiction, some things should be right… Sorry, kinda not sorry…

Kait delighted me as she has definitely paid attention to locations, words (and spelling) and while there are some of our colloquial phrases and words used she didn’t over use them when the characters were speaking.

I could picture settings, especially the drive from up north to Edinburgh… all of this, along with the story just made me love this book more! I also got the feeling that Ms Nolan might like this awesome (ok, I’m biased! 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) wee country of ours!?!

Raleigh was a great guy. Hadn’t had the happiest life since his mum passed then was, IMHO, betrayed by his dad…

Meeting a stranger at a casino with a strange proposition was just another weird turn in his world.

I don’t know how I expected him to be when he got to the village but the gods, the guy threw himself into the whole experience.

Kyla, poor Kyla. He she is thinking her brother is gonna bear the weight of the centuries old pact around their family property and that of the Lennox family, when all of a sudden things change and she’s suddenly in the spotlight.

I liked Raleigh and Kyla together. They formed a friendships that was developing into more – but there was the complication of Kyla already having a boyfriend who lived in the city. I didn’t entirely like the premise of how things would go, especially when it was obvious that feelings were more than were being admitted…

I liked the supporting cast of characters, one or two in particular and you could definitely see some future couples within the friend/family group!

An excellent first book in the Kilted Hearts series and I can’t wait for more!!!!

** Read the novella Jilting the Kilt to meet the main characters that are gonna be in the series and for a glimpse at a happy couple from one of Kait’s other series!!!

The patio door opens behind me, alerting me to Bree’s presence.
“Bree’s here. I gotta go,” I tell him.
“Watch your back,” he warns, not hiding the worry in his voice.
“You, too.” I hang up and turn around to find Bree rubbing the back of her neck with a resigned look on her face.
“She’s on her way, isn’t she?” I ask.
She winces and nods.
“Please tell me Colt’s with her.” I like Colt, and it’s obvious he cares for both women. Plus, he can handle himself and is one hell of a shot.
“No. Colt’s not with her. But she’s not alone.”
“You need to call her back and tell her to turn around. We barely have enough manpower to cover you, much less Sadie and whichever one of your friends she’s dragging with her.”
“It’s, um, well, it’s Killian,” she stammers. “He didn’t want her driving by herself.”
It takes a few seconds before I trust myself to speak. “Are you telling me Killian Cross is on his way here right now?”
She bites her lip and nods reluctantly.
“Exactly how many times has Cross asked you out?” I ask.
She wrings her hands together. “Twice. And it’s been months. We’re just good friends, not that it’s any of your business.”
I see red. “Not my fucking business? Are you high? Everything about you is my business.”
She backs up but it’s too late. In two steps I’m on her. I pull her to me and slam my mouth down on hers.
Instead of fighting it, her arms wrap around me. I fist her hair, and she gasps, giving me what I need to slide my tongue home. I bring her even closer, and she melts into me.
I pour everything I have into the kiss. If she won’t believe it when I tell her she’s mine, I’ll fucking show her and leave no room for doubt.
I’ve been waiting for this moment for two years, and all my frustration comes through. She moans into my mouth which spurs me on. I thought our first kiss couldn’t be beat, but this one blows it out of the water.
This kiss is everything. Heaven and hell, want and need, every ounce of my being focused on the slide of her tongue. I slow it down until our lips separate. I run my nose along hers then drop my hand down to her lower back and bury my face in her hair.
“This is why you’re my business. This proves you want me as much as I want you. Face it. You’re mine, and I’m fucking yours. Always have been. Always will be.”
I lean in and kiss the side of her lips. “Give us a chance, beautiful. It’s going to work out. I promise.”
Her entire face softens, and I think I have her. But then she blinks, and I see naked fear flash in her eyes right before she shuts down.
Fucking hell.

RECENT RELEASE – Relentless (Mason Family series) by Adriana Locke

TITLE: Relentless

Mason Family series

AUTHOR: Adriana Locke

RELEASE DAY: September 3rd, 2021

BUY LINK: https://geni.us/6IwidQC

BLURB:

“I had to sneeze.”

I should’ve taken her insurance information and driven off like any reasonable CEO with places to be would.
She crashed into my car, for heaven’s sake. Because she had to sneeze.

What did I do? I didn’t get in my car and drive away if that’s what you’re thinking.

Nope. I stuck around. I could suggest I stayed because she needed help, but the truth? She was really, really hot.

We became fast friends. Then friends with benefits. Before I knew it, we were involved in an illicit office romance that had me fumbling through a drawerful of panties to get a Post-It.

It was supposed to be easy—a fling, if you will. A dashing millionaire hero (*adjusts tie*) and a beautiful (stubborn, frustratingly independent, hell-on-wheels) damsel in distress. (Don’t tell her I said that.)

It wasn’t supposed to be forever, but we did want a happy ending. (Pun intended.) We could’ve made it work, too.

But one of us overcomplicated things with the L-word. And the other? They omitted a truth that changed everything.

Author’s Note: Relentless, a full-length, standalone novel in the Mason Family Series, delivers a dose of heat and heart. Enjoy!

Excerpt:

He fiddles with his tie. “Otherwise, I’ll be back upstairs in a few hours, and we can head up to legal. You’ll be communicating with them a lot, and I want to make the introductions.”

“Okay,” I say, following his lead and standing.

He comes around the corner of his desk and stops a few feet in front of me.

Our eyes lock, his irises shifting colors again—deepening—as he takes me in. If we were in another place—any other place—at another time—besides the office in which we both work—I’d raise on my tiptoes and kiss him.

At least, I think that’s what I would do. It’s been so long. But the version of me that lives in my head and plays out fictional romantic interludes believes that’s what would happen.

My mouth goes dry, and my lips are downright parched. But as the reel of the make-believe kiss we’d share finishes in my head, I scamper back to reality and the fact that he’s my boss. And no matter how kissable he is or what I wouldn’t give to lean in to this feeling—the one that feels pretty and desired—I don’t.

I can’t.

Because life is about priorities and having a roof over your head is a big one. So, too, is ensuring that you don’t give people the ability to screw up your life.

Kissing my boss would surely put me at risk for the first one. It would definitely be wading into the waters of the second.

“Let me know if you need anything from me today,” I say, my voice a little raspier than I would like.

His eyes darken, but all he does is nod.

I lift my chin and give him my best-practiced smile. Then I turn on my heel and escape into my office.

Copyright 2021 @Nikki Castle

Without thinking about what I’m doing, I step closer to him and run my fingers through his hair, trying to understand the sudden shift in his mood. His eyebrows shoot up in surprise, but he stands still and lets me play with strands of his hair. Without the tequila coursing through my veins, I never would have let myself touch him like this. But right now, I can’t find it in me to care.

“It must be exhausting being so mean all the time,” I observe thoughtfully. Something flashes in his eyes, but I can’t put a name to it, and then it’s gone just as quickly.

I turn away from him, completely oblivious to how much I just overstepped our normal boundaries. “Not to mention you would be so much hotter with just a little less snark,” I call over my shoulder. I’m too busy drunkenly fumbling with my keys in the lock to notice his eyes widen at my honest comment.

“Ha!” I exclaim triumphantly, pushing the door open and stepping inside. But before I can take more than two steps in, I feel myself being pushed to the wall, Tristan’s body pressing tightly against mine. “Hey!” I cry. His moody expression is gone, replaced with the smug face that I know so well.

“You would hate me if I was a nice guy,” he drawls.

I roll my eyes at him, trying to push him off me. “Guess we’ll never know, because you being a nice guy is as likely as me using the word ‘literally’ wrong.” He grins, knowing how much I hate when girls use the word to describe something that is very clearly not literal.

“Admit it,” he says softly, pushing me harder into the wall with his body. My breath catches as his face nears mine. “You like me the way I am.”

“I—I don’t—” my brain no longer seems to be able to form a coherent sentence. All I can do is stare into his hungry gaze and try not to picture what it would feel like if he fucked me against this wall right now.

His lips brush against my cheek, at the same time that he kneads my hips with his fingers. Every touch, every whisper of his breath, is further uncoiling the heat that’s growing between my legs.

“You don’t want someone to pull your chair out for you, or ask you what you want to eat,” he continues. “You want someone that doesn’t need your permission. Someone that will call you on your shit.” He tangles his fingers in my hair and, without warning, yanks my head back. I gasp in surprise. “You want someone that will spank you when you’re acting stupid.”

I can’t escape the whimper that slips from my lips. I squeeze my legs together, trying desperately to think of a response. But when he pulls back to wait for my reply, I know that no words could answer his unspoken question.

There are so many things that I hate about this man—he’s arrogant, and selfish, and rude. He’s a player that uses women for sex, and the only thing he actually gives a shit about is fighting. He’s the definition of self-absorbed. I should be shoving him away from me, telling him to fuck off and to stay on his side of the house for the rest of the week. I shouldn’t be thinking about what he tastes like, or how his cock might feel inside of me. I shouldn’t be wondering how hard he could make me come.

But his words remind me that the same alpha qualities that make me hate him… are also the ones that are making my knees weak.

REVIEW & RECOMMENDATION – Forking Around (Hot Cakes #2) by Erin Nicholas

“You can always count on Erin Nicholas for fun, sexy contemporary romance.”
—Melissa Foster, New York Times bestselling author

Forking Around, a flirty and sexy romantic comedy standalone from New York Times bestselling author Erin Nicholas, is available now!

ForkingAround300 (1).jpg

A Cinderella story with a hot boss so charming even a fairy godmother couldn’t do better.

Everyone thinks Dax Marshall is a prince of a guy. And he’s definitely charming.

But Jane has enough going on without adding a torrid fling with the boss to her life. Between her father’s illness, her wicked-ish stepmother, her little sister’s teenage drama, and the co-workers who depend on her—she can’t handle another mess.

No matter how tempting and gorgeous the mess may be. Or how messy he wants to get with her.

Dax has spent his life being very serious about only one thing: proving you can be successful while still having a helluva good time. But he’s just met the one woman who might break his I-can-charm-anyone streak. She’s actually taking him seriously…and she seriously thinks they have nothing in common and can’t be together.

Maybe he’s the one who needs a new view of happily ever after. It’s time to stop forking around.

Excerpt:

He was the new strawberry pie in her life. She’d had one taste of Zoe’s strawberry pie and that had been it. Nothing else would ever measure up. She would never not crave it. She would never pass up a chance to have it on her tongue.

Yeah, Dax Marshall was that.

And then some.

He pulled back, breathing hard, staring down at her.

She quickly put her hand over his mouth. “Don’t talk. Talking is the wrong choice right now.”

She was going to have to deal with the boss thing soon enough. And the millionaire thing. And the he-doesn’t-live-here-and-isn’t-staying thing. And all the other crap she always had to deal with that made this impossible.

But for another minute—or maybe ten—she didn’t want to think about any of that. And if he talked, that would be very difficult.

He pulled in a breath, gave her a short nod that she interpreted as okay, no talking and she moved her hand.

Which was the right choice, because he leaned in as he slid his hand up the side of her body, skimming over her hip, waist, the side of her breast, up and into her hair. Then he cupped the back of her head and lowered his mouth to hers again.

This time he kissed her.

And seriously, she’d give up strawberry pie for this.

They made out like that for long, delicious minutes.

When he finally took his mouth from hers, it was to slide it along her jawline, his beard causing goose bumps to trip down her arms and tighten her nipples. In her ear he said gruffly, “I have to talk now.”

She laughed lightly. “I didn’t think it would last for even this long, really.”

“Well, I do love using my mouth this way too.” He dragged his lips along the side of her neck.

Her nipples got even tighter, begging for him to drag those lips down there.

“But I can’t resist saying—” He lifted his head. “You are the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.”

She grinned. “Well… same.”

A very sexy kind of surprised but superhot look crossed his face. “What about pie?”

She sighed. “Pie is amazing.”

“But the kissing…” he prompted.

She knew she shouldn’t tell him the truth. The guy’s ego didn’t quit. Already. But she found herself nodding. “I was really hoping you’d be bad at it. Like terrible. Like no-worry-of-dirty-dreams bad,” she said.

He arched an eyebrow. “And?”

She sighed. “It was really good.”

“Dirty-dreams-tonight good?” His voice was rumbly and low.

She nodded. “Unfortunately.”

He looked very pleased by her answer. His mouth curled up. “Maybe we should combine the kissing and the pie.”

Her eyes widened before she could stop it. That would be… holy crap she would never recover. “I can’t even imagine that, honestly. I might die.”

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Forking Around, book two in the Hot Cakes series from Erin Nicholas, was a really fun read.

On the surface Dax Marshall is the complete opposite of Jane Kemper.. she’s got so many responsibilities between work and family while Dax seems to just coast through life with little worry or concern.. but once Jane catches his eye and his interest and lets him know how she feels about getting involved with someone who’s her boss and all of the reasons that she thinks them getting together wouldn’t work Dax sets out to prove her wrong.

Where can I find me a Dax??? This guy was such a sweetie – yeah he was portrayed as the player/prankster/laid back one of the group of friends who have taken over Hot Cakes but when someone takes the time to dig a little deeper and have more than just a laugh with him – namely Jane – she finds out that there’s a lot more to the guy than she (or lets face it, most people) thought.

Jane was a really good person. Regardless of the impact to her life she was there for her sister and dad, her friends and coworkers and nothing was ever done with complaint. She didn’t believe she had time for a life of her own or why someone like Dax would be interested in her… so glad he set out to show her.

I love the dynamic of the friends in this series. Be it the Fluke guys or the girls in these books they all understand each other, they get what they are going through without much discussion and they are there with their support and backup, no matter how crazy their actions may appear.

Dax and Jane’s first ‘date’ was fun reading and his easy read on people and ability to know just what to do really helped calm the chaos going on around Jane. I understood Jane’s fear and Dax’s concerns when things turned serious, but man, was I rooting for them to get to their HEA.

I’m really enjoying this series and cannot wait to see how Josie’s story plays out!!!!

Forking Around gets 5 Hot Cakes (or is it that Buttered Up?!?) stars!!!!

NEW RELEASE – Hate The Player by Max Monroe

Hate the Player (official 9x6)

I hate him.

I want him.

He’s a jerk.

A player.

Addicting.

Trouble.

Hate the Player, a slow burn and hilarious romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is available now!

“Roses are red, violets are blue, stay away from Andrew Watson’s *ahem* because no other women ever do.”

That’s quite the way to start a conversation at a casual lunch, huh? Grilled chicken, French fries, and pelvic-fatigue, oh my!

And that’s not even the worst of it.

My friend Raquel didn’t pull any punches when she warned me about my brand-new co-star and his notoriously player-esque ways. Apparently, my most important mission on my first role in a feature film is to stay immune to his charms.

Are you kidding me? Production costs on this movie are in the hundreds of thousands a day, and staying away from a panty-whispering, vajayjay-charmer is supposed to be at the top of my list? Pfft. Puh-lease.

It doesn’t matter that he’s annoyingly attractive, uber rich, crazy famous, and lusted after by ninety percent of the female population; Andrew Watson is trouble with a capital T—especially for a woman like me.

As a preventative measure, I’ve decided to go ahead and hate him.

Don’t worry, you guys, I’m completely in control. There’s absolutely no way I’m going to do something stupid like fall in love with him.

I can hate the player but still secretly love his addictive game.

I’m sure of it.

Birdie

True to my name, I’m about to take fucking flight. At least, I would if I could.

In this moment, it really would have been helpful if my trainer hadn’t successfully eliminated all the extra flappy meat on my upper arms. Surely, if I got them going fast enough, the wind beneath those bat wings could have carried me up and through the ceiling of this place.

C’mon, you big baby, I coach myself. You can do this.

One cavernous breath into my lungs and then another and another, and eventually, just before my vision turns tunneled, I will my feet to move away from the door.

Gleaming marble floors, golden statues, and a freaking fountain in the center, the lobby of Capo Brothers Studios is everything I should have expected and more.

If everything is bigger in Texas, then everything is most certainly richer in LA.

I check in with security quickly, my voice only a little croaky thanks to the frog in my throat, and head for the elevator bank at the far side of the lobby.

I’m to head to the fifteenth floor, I’m told, and then go straight down the hall to the glass doors on the left at the end. There, I’ll find William Capo’s office—the head honcho and only surviving brother of Capo Brothers.

My cowgirl boots are noisy on the marble floors when I do as instructed. The sound you make when you walk is such a small detail—one I don’t normally think about—but the echo of their clack today makes my heart feel like it’s knocking into my rib cage and each step across the ornate floor is merely a sound effect.

Fifteen floors eclipse quickly—clearly, they’ve spared no expense on their elevator—and the hallway that leads to William’s office seems strangely one-directional. Like once I go down it—once I take this step—there will be no going back. Which is probably why, after forcing myself to go the distance to the end, I pause at the open door, the points of my booted toes just shy of crossing the line.

“Good morning.” A pretty assistant dressed in a white power suit greets me before I’ve even cleared the threshold of the door, and all thoughts of escape are dashed. Like it or not, I’ve just been shoved over the line. I will my feet to do the same as she continues to speak. “Can I help you?”

“I’m Birdie Harris,” I answer and have to swallow hard against the dryness threatening to close my throat. “I have an audition.”

My nerves are so obvious, the assistant offers a sympathetic smile.

If she were from my childhood hometown in West Virginia, she’d most likely be thinking Bless her heart.

She taps something across the keyboard of her iMac and places her hand to the Bluetooth at her ear. “Mr. Capo, I have Birdie Harris here.” Immediately, she looks away from the computer and meets my eyes. “They’ll be ready for you shortly. You can take a seat over there.” She points behind me, back through the door and across the hall to what I’m assuming is a fancy-schmancy waiting room of some sort. I haven’t encountered a place in the building that doesn’t have some sort of gilded or marble inlay, so I highly doubt I’m going to step through that door and into a room styled by the set designer for Saw. Though, I can’t say some sort of torture device wouldn’t be completely misplaced right now. I’m already doing a pretty good job of mentally waterboarding myself with worry.

I offer a little nod, keeping my twisted, sicko thoughts to myself. I doubt they’re interested in hiring a woman on the brink of a hysterical episode.

The secretary quirks a brow, and I realize, though I’ve nodded my affirmation of understanding, I’ve yet to move.

Good God, Birdie! Go sit down.

Annoyed with myself, I turn on my boots and march across the hall so violently, it’s like there’s an invisible person helping me along with a heavy hand at the nape of my neck.

When I cross into the room, a man is sitting on a swanky leather sofa with his booted feet up on the coffee table. He glances up briefly before returning his eyes to the phone in his lap. Embarrassed, I smooth my clomps instantly.

You’re a gazelle, Birdie, not a herd of buffalo, I coach. Move like it.

With his attention occupied, I survey him more closely as I move to take a seat across from him. He’s wearing jeans and a plain white T-shirt, and his jawline would make steel beams look weak. Seriously. Confronted with an earthquake, I would seek shelter right under the eave of his jaw.

I’d love to get another peek at his eyes just to study the color, but fearing the eye contact that would require, I’m careful not to make any overt noises that might draw his attention again.

When he smirks, a devilish proposition-like smile at the screen of his phone, I don’t have to wonder anymore.

Oh no. I know exactly who this man is.

Andrew Watson.

The very man Rocky warned me about and I subsequently Instagram stalked. A laundry list of different women dotted through his timeline, it confirmed everything Rocky told me and then some.

All relaxed and cool, he sits on the white leather sofa with one arm outstretched across the back. Confidence and charm ooze from every freaking cell in his body. No doubt, Andrew Watson is more than capable of commanding the attention of everyone in the room, no matter the situation.

No wonder he’s one of Hollywood’s most famous actors.

The only time I have that kind of quiet confidence is when I’m onstage, singing my songs, lost in the music I created.

Just play it cool, Birdie.

On a deep breath, I force the uncertainty and unease out of my shoulders and settle my ass into the sofa across from him. He shifts again, crossing one ankle over the other and casually adjusting the denim at his crotch.

My eyes are immediately drawn to his bulge, and thanks to Rocky’s colorful descriptions of his favorite appendage, a little penis-shaped soldier is burned in my brain. After a few seconds of imagining the shape of his helmet and intensity of his salute, I jerk my gaze away in a panic.

Jesus. As if this audition wasn’t screwing with my head enough! Now I have Saving Ryan’s Privates, a military-themed porno my head just made up starring Staff Sergeant Dick Richardson, complicating things even more!

I must make a noise I don’t realize—the sound of my saliva gurgling in my throat while I choke on it, perhaps—because Andrew looks at me with curious eyes. I try like hell to keep my calm and act like I haven’t just gone to mental war with the soldier in his pants, but there’s only so much hysteria containment my mind is capable of.

“Uh…hi,” I say, trying so dang hard not to glance back down at his crotch that I start spewing diarrhea of the mouth about goddamn military-themed movies. “I never saw A Few Good Men, but I hear Tom Cruise was good in it.” When I realize what I’ve just said makes absolutely no sense to him—punctuated perfectly by his eyebrows drawing together noticeably—the gurgling saliva turns into a full-blown choke, and suddenly, the only way to breathe is through a hacking cough.

Holy shit, I’m too anxious to be around other humans right now! Also, I’m going to kill Rocky for putting this crap in my head about this guy’s penis.

“Are you okay?” he asks, and I hold up my hand in some kind of gesture. I’m not sure of its technical name, but its meaning is clear—please forget I exist right now.

He asks me once more, but I nod, and once the embarrassing coughing fit passes, I meet his piercingly gray-blue eyes—seeing their color is strikingly unavoidable now—and I offer a halfhearted smile.

“Sorry,” I apologize. I didn’t mean to drag him into an impromptu SNL sketch where I choke on spit and say ridiculously inappropriate, off-the-wall things. “I guess you could say I’m a little nervous.”

His responding smile gleams so bright, I have to wonder if he has an endorsement deal with Crest toothpaste. His mouth would make a dental hygienist get on their hands and knees and thank the Lord above.

“Don’t worry, sweetheart. There’s no need to be nervous around me,” he responds, punctuating his words with a wink.

If my mind were a screenplay, the nerves would be exiting stage left.

Did he seriously just wink at me after assuming that I’m nervous to be in his presence?

Surely, I’m hearing this wrong. No one is that obsessed with themselves…right?

“Excuse me?” I ask, and his megawatt smile is still ever-present.

“If you’d like me to sign an autograph or take a selfie with you,” he enunciates slowly, as if my being able to understand him clearly was the problem. “I can probably sneak that in before I have to head in there.”

His autograph? You have got to be kidding me. He sure is a cocky bastard—and for the first time today, I’m not even talking about his dick.

Like the tip of a match being swiped across the edge of a matchbook, aggravation bursts into my veins.

“I’m here for an audition,” I assert.

Unfazed, he quirks a brow as if to say, my invitation for an autograph still stands.

Attractive or not, this guy is one of the biggest asses I’ve ever been around.

“I’m Birdie Harris. I’m auditioning for the role of Arizona Lee.”

And I’ll be damned if I’m not gonna land this acting gig just to spite this prick.

Excerpt:

“Let’s just let it happen.”

“I’ve never been good at that.”

Because she’s never had the chance; Thom didn’t make it possible. I have a feeling that she’s tried to fantasize her way into the experience she wanted with her ex—and failed. Her anxiety is an unspoken ache bleeding between us. I feel her wondering… What will she do if I can’t give her what she craves? If she’s not capable of feeling real pleasure and she has to face the fact she’s been blaming her ex all this time?

And underneath her worries lies a yearning I can’t resist. Not for me specifically…but if I do everything right, is there any chance it could be? Is it at all possible she wakes up tomorrow and wants me to stay longer?

What the… Why am I thinking this shit? She’s only here for a couple of weeks while she puts her ex behind her enough to date her new neighbor. Masey and I have nothing beyond tonight. I need to remember that.

But she’s in my head and under my skin. Sure, I’m attracted. But this is…different.

It feels like more.

“I have no doubt you’re better than you think,” I finally say as I cradle her cheek and slowly slide my fingers around her nape, curling the tips along the soft column. “But let me help you. Tonight, tell me everything you think. If something I do feels good, say so. If it doesn’t, I want to hear that, too.”

She licks her lips again, and at the thought of her tongue on my skin, I feel my knees start to buckle. “You do?”

Masey breathes the question like she’s not sure whether to believe me. I do my best to give her a reassuring smile when what I really want is to strip her bare, kiss her breathless, then rake my lips all over her body and focus on the parts that will make her sigh and moan and ultimately scream.

“Yeah.”

“You won’t feel criticized?”

“Positive.”

“All right. I will.”

“Good. Last chance.”

“To back out?” She shakes her head. “No. I-I want this.”

“This?” I know what she’s getting at. I have every intention of being the most accommodating lover she’s ever imagined. But I’m going to be an absolute bastard about one thing: she can’t just want sex. I’ve hardly touched her and I already know that’s not enough for me anymore.

“I want you,” she admits softly, sending my triumph spiking. “It feels incredibly intimate to admit that. I barely know you and I already want you so much I don’t understand…”

My fingers tighten on her nape as I start to lean in. “Same, honey. I want you, too. Now stop talking so I can kiss you.”

She braces herself by clutching my shoulders. Her palms are like ghosts, barely whispering over my shirt. But her fingers dig into me, as if she can’t quite keep her anxiety and her need to herself. “Oh, god.”

“It’s going to be good, Masey. I promise.”

I have no doubt about that.

She stops breathing again. Her eyes slide shut. She tilts her face up to me. Without her heels, she’s a tiny thing. I bend closer, closer, watching her lips softly purse.

My heart chugs. My blood races through my veins, searing muscle and skin. My cock, which has been hard since we met, turns unbearably stony as I inhale her scent. The beach clings to her—salt and wind and something sweet that’s purely her.

What if I’ve been looking at the wrong kind of woman my whole life? What if everything I’ve been seeking is now right in front of me?
