AP new - synopsis.jpg

The whole world might be in love with him. But all he’s ever loved is her.

Grant Turner’s name is synonymous with football. The fans and media can’t get enough of the player known as The Invincible Man, a nickname he earned while growing up in one of the toughest neighborhoods in the country and the nickname he’s kept by being one of the best players in professional football today. No one can take him down. He’s unstoppable.

But even a suit of armor has its weak point, and Grant’s has always been Ryan Hale.
They were a couple of kids when they fell in love, and just when it looked like the happy ending neither expected was within reach, Ryan disappeared. No explanations. No good-byes.

Grant coped by throwing himself into the game for seven years, and he’s finally moved on. Or so he thinks.

When she walks back into his life, all of those feelings come crashing back, despite the warnings in his head that tell him she’ll leave him again. Grant can withstand the league’s toughest defensive line, but he’s always been weak where she’s concerned.

No man can take Grant Turner down.

But one woman certainly can.

One woman will.

How many men after me?” His forehead creased as he asked his question, setting down his fork.
His question surprised me. “What?”
“How many men have you been with since you were with me?”
I swallowed the bite of onion ring and set down what was left of it. Wolfing down fried food didn’t pair well with this type of conversation. “Like how many guys have I dated? Had as boyfriends?” My weight shifted on the counter stool I was situated on. “Had sex with?”
Grant’s jaw tensed, but he relaxed it right after. He answered me by lifting a shoulder.
The longer I took to answer, the more he looked like he was bracing himself for a full-on dissertation. Little did he know my answer to his questions could be summed up in one breath.
“I haven’t had any boyfriends since you,” I admitted, feeling kind of silly admitting it. At the same time, I felt strong. I’d never felt the need to fill a void in my life with a man. I’d never needed a man to define me. What Grant and I had had was special, and what we’d created together was even more special. I wasn’t about to let some shmuck looking to get a little piece of ass cheapen my whole experience with relationships.
The corners of Grant’s mouth were twitching, but he didn’t let the smile form. “What about dates?”
I leaned toward him. “Same story.”
He let the smile form then.
“And I thought we’d agreed to move on from the dating topic earlier tonight.” Giving him the look didn’t faze him—it never really had. Even my most impressive Look.
“Fine. No more talk about dating.” He lifted his hands in the air and pretended like he was getting back to finishing up the last few remnants of our gluttonous feast. When he just kept twirling the same fry in a gob of ketchup, I knew he hadn’t moved on yet. “How many have you had sex with?”
“Grant . . .”
“I need to know, Ryan. I know I don’t have any right to know. I also know you had a right to sleep with whoever you wanted.” He paused, his face looking like he was being tortured. “I just need to know.”
My lungs felt like limp bags when I thought about answering his question. Not because I was embarrassed or ashamed or anything like that, but because he’d know once I told him. He’d know the reason why, and he’d know he was that reason why.
He’d know I’d never really moved on from him, and I couldn’t have him knowing that because I needed to keep a careful distance between us. I needed to protect him, not from himself this time, but from me.
But even though I knew all of that, I also knew that the truth had never been optional when it came to Grant and me. Never a choice. The truth wasn’t what we picked when it was convenient. It had been the standard from the beginning, and if I had anything to do with it, it would remain the standard to the end.
The truth. I’d told him almost everything I had to. Almost. The one last thing I was withholding would have to come out soon.
“You were the first person I had sex with, Grant Turner.”
He slowly twisted toward me, his legs spreading wide, tucking around the outsides of mine. His hands lowered to my kneecaps, like he was trying to show me that no matter how I answered, he still wanted to be here with me—eating greasy food in an old diner that had already locked its doors.
One of my hands covered one of his. “And you were the last person I had sex with too.” It came out in one long exhale, my fingers braiding tighter through his with each word.
He was quiet for a minute. And then another. When his silence continued, my eyes lifted to see what was the matter.
His forehead was folded in half a dozen creases, his eyes narrowed in confusion. “Are you saying . . .?” He leaned in closer, confusion settling deeper.
“You’re the last person I had sex with.” I thought I’d spelled it out pretty solidly before.
His face ironed out, blinking like he was just waking up. “Does that mean . . .?”
I sighed. “I haven’t had sex in seven years? Yeah. That’s what it means.”
Glancing behind the counter, I made sure the owner and cook, who’d generously agreed to let us stay late, were still way in the back and preoccupied with something other than the conversation happening at the two end counter stools.
Grant leaned closer, his head moving just outside of mine. His breath was just rushed enough to notice. “Are you saying I’m the last man you’ve had inside you?”
His words surprised me, sending a shiver winding down my spine. I didn’t want him to know that his question or his proximity or his labored breaths were affecting me, but they were. I was feeling very, very affected in certain locations of my body.
“I think that’s the general definition of sex, yeah,” I answered, glancing down to make sure nothing too obvious was showing through the thin material of the dress. Thank god I’d gone with the thicker lined bra, because Grant’s eyes followed mine a moment later.
When my gaze dropped to a certain spot on his body, I found his own arousal not so easily disguised. It made the inhale I’d been taking sound more like more of a gasp than a breath. He knew what I was looking at, he knew what was on display, and he didn’t do anything to adjust or hide it. He wanted me to know. He wanted me to see.
Realizing that sent a rush of pleasure through my body, pooling between my legs.
“I’m going to kiss you, Ryan.” His head nuzzled my neck. “I should probably ask permission, but fuck, I don’t want to, because I have to kiss you. Whether you think it’s a good idea or not.”
My arms went limp, my legs following, from the sickness I had for this man. The one that crippled me. The one that paralyzed me. My eyes squeezed closed when his face came around in front of mine. “You don’t want to kiss me, Grant.”
He pulled me closer. “Like hell I don’t.”

This job. Boring is too colorful a word for it. I’ve been escorting humans to the afterlife for millennia. I’m over it. But when you’re the son of the two greatest reapers of all time, reaping is in your blood. My latest appointment is with one Annabelle Lyric, a twenty-eight year old New Orleans party planner. Snoozefest. But there is one bonus to this assignment: it’s Halloween night. In New Orleans. And she’s attending a posh party whilst unaware of her impending demise. I’ve been tasked with taking Annabelle’s soul right after the masked ball. The good news? I’ll fit right in with all the costumed partygoers. The bad news? That hits me when I realize Annabelle is much more than my next victim, she’s my fated mate.

Note: This is a short, sexy Halloween tale of true love.

“I’m going to claim you now, angel.” He pushes back from the bed and stands. With his gaze firmly on me, he unbuttons his black pants, revealing more of his pale skin and the tantalizing trail of dark hair. When he pushes his pants to the floor, my eyes grow wide. His cock is thicker than anything I’ve ever had before. A swirl of fear is tempered by the rush of desire his naked form creates in me. He is a living statue, perfect, hard, and masculine. And I’m just … me.

I glance down at my body, and the difference hits me hard.

“What is that?” He stares at the air around me. “Why are you unhappy?”

“How?” I cock my head at him. “How can you tell?”

“Your aura changes. Have I displeased you?”

“Displeased me? No. You were, that was … you were amazing. It’s just that I’m not…” I can’t figure out how to say what I’m feeling, and I start to slide my legs closed as embarrassment creeps in.

He’s on top of me before I move an inch. “I’ve never wanted anything more than I want you right now. You are my beautiful, perfect angel.”

I see no duplicity in his eyes, only warmth. His words instill a confidence in me that I’ve never experienced. I run my palm down his cheek and press my lips to his. He kisses back with so much emotion that I can’t catch my breath. Goodbye heart.

“I want you, too.” I close my eyes and try to inject confidence into my words. “I want you to claim me, like you said. Make me yours.”

Hopping in my truck to leave, I pull out my cell phone and text the last chick that messaged me. I don’t even care who she is, I just need a good fucking tonight. As I hit send, I stick the key in the ignition and a taxi pulls up in front of me. The rear door opens and out stumbles Cameron. She’s blitzed out of her mind as she trips on the curb, falling to her hands and knees. The taxi drives off, leaving her, and I shake my head, pissed at her for getting this drunk.             What the fuck is she thinking?
The last thing she’ll want to see is me, but she can’t even open the door to her building. Getting out angry, I help her stand. She looks up at me and for the first time since I’ve been back, she smiles at me, softening my heart, a sight I’ve fucking missed.
“Nixon,” she slurs, her breath mixed with tequila and mint. “What are you doing here?”
I ignore her question and help her inside. She clings to me, her head hanging low, and she keeps tripping on the steps. “How much did you have to drink?” I ask her.
            “Who cares?”
“Give me your keys,” I demand, and when she does, I lift her up and toss her over my shoulder. She laughs for a moment and then silences, swaying with the motions as I carry her into her apartment. Tossing her down on her bed, her long messy hair fans out around her.
            God, she’s so hot.
“Did Guy and Luke let you get this drunk?” I ask her.
“I don’t need anybody to let me do shit.” She rolls to her side and pats the bed next to her, but I decline shaking my head. If I sit, I might end up fucking her—right here, right now. And I can’t take advantage of her like that. We’d both hate ourselves tomorrow if anything happened, especially with how drunk she is. “Stop being such a pussy and sit down.” Against my better judgment I listen to her.
“I should fuck him up for letting you drink so much.”
“You do that, Mister Tough Guy.”
“I will. Was Guy there with you?”
“He left early like a pussy. It was just Luke and I. You know…I fucked him a while ago and now he likes me.”
“What the fuck? When?” I grind my teeth hearing that she slept with him. It makes me want to smash his face in.
“Right before you came back.” Her eyes are heavy as she’s talking to me through long blinks.
“Do you like him?” I ask her, dreading her response.
“I thought I did…until you came back and fucked everything up.” She glances up at me, yawning through her tired eyes. “Why are you here?”
I shrug my shoulders, not completely sure myself. She scoots a little closer to me, her face now resting on my thigh, and I touch her cheek. Closing my eyes, her warm skin beneath my cool fingers feels so fuckin’ good.
She asks me, “Did you miss me, when you were gone?”
“Every day,” I whisper, and for the first time, I truly acknowledge the regret I have about leaving her…

When you wanna show a woman that she’s what’s lighting the fire in your gut, though… quick and innocent pecks just don’t do the trick. Nah, a man goes dark and dirty for that kind of lesson. He wants his woman wet and hot. And he wants her that way everywhere. Her mouth. Her core. Everywhere.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

Gods, I thought Orla was great before I read ‘Wed by Wednesday’ but the lady has just gone up a peg now that I’ve finished her story!!

I loved reading about how she and Jethro got together. Jethro was nothing like Orla expected, granted, initially he was a bit of an ungracious git (reasons for which are very quickly clear) but Orla had enough spunk, sass and determination about her that nothing the big sexy farmer threw at her put her off too much!

Although this was a novella it didn’t feel short or quick in any way. It was funny, sweet, hot and sexy – just what you’d expect from the Sarah O’Rourke gals!! I’m not gonna say anything else about the story…. just that you should jump right in and find out how Jethro and Orla’s life together began!

A perfect way to end the Passion in Paradise series! ❤

Jethro’s lips kicked up in a sly half-smile at her sudden movement. It was like he knew he was getting to her and he enjoyed that knowledge immensely. “There’s no way you’re not from the city. Nashville or Knoxville, maybe,” he murmured, before shaking his head.   “Nah, I’m bettin’ you came in from Atlanta.”

“How…how did you know that?” Orla stuttered, her eyebrows furrowing with consternation.   Just what she needed in her life – an intelligent jackass.

“That fancy hair.   Your pretty dress. Those shiny shoes that, if you look, you can see your reflection lookin’ back. And those heels of yours aren’t scuffed, so you’ve been riding, not walking. Your clothes are too wrinkled to be from Nashville or Knoxville, so you’re just rumpled enough to have gotten off the bus from Atlanta,” he surmised, with a know-it-all grin as her cheeks reddened with embarrassment. “Oh, yeah!   You’re city bred from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. And a fussy little lady like you ain’t gonna find what she’s lookin’ for in Paradise.”

“Actually, son…” Jethro’s mother began to hedge, biting her lip as she turned to look up into her son’s face. “She has found just what she’s been missing.”

Biting her lip, Orla winced as Jethro frowned at his step mother. The woman, however, didn’t look overly worried about her son’s imminent reaction and she wondered if things would work out alright after all.

Jethro frowned.   “Mother McKinnon, we don’t have time for…”

“Oh, just rip the bandage off, Lydia,” Nellie ordered, interrupting Jethro as she bustled over to where they all stood together. “Jethro, meet your future wife,” the waitress decreed, flapping a hand at where Orla stood, nose to chest with him. “Take a minute and let this settle in your bones, boy.   Your much beloved step-momma done went and ordered you up a bride for hire.”

Portrait of charming model lovingly looks at tattooed man

Excerpt:

Baby, you’re music.
Like rain in the desert.
Like sweet after bitter.
Everything she needed in that moment rolled up into three words she never saw coming. She couldn’t help herself. With one step, her chest was flush against his, and with her eyes, which felt wide and hot staring up at him, she gave him unspoken permission.
His lips were soft as they landed on hers—tentative, almost like he couldn’t believe what she was offering. Her breasts pushed against his chest, their softness crushed against the solid wall of muscle that she’d felt before when they’d danced on the sidewalk. They stood like that for a moment: their lips and chests touching, barely breathing, almost motionless…until their minds and bodies registered what they were doing. And then?
A chemical reaction.
Explosive.
Hungry.
Demanding.
Now.
With a roar of want, Cort jerked her impossibly closer, his hands palming her ass as he lifted her effortlessly onto the countertop. Mad moaned with pleasure as his tongue invaded her mouth to slide against hers. She pushed the towel off his shoulders and wrapped her legs around his waist, locking her ankles behind his back so she was pinned against him. One of his hands wound into her hair, twisting the strands until he held it back tightly, keeping her face upturned as he devoured her mouth with long, insistent strokes of his tongue. Mad arched against him, desperate to feel more of him, and he obliged her, stepping as close to her as he could and gently thrusting his hips so that the hard ridge of his erection massaged the tender, throbbing nub between her outstretched legs.
She wiggled closer to him, her fingers dropping from the back of his neck to smooth down his back. Desperate to feel his skin under their tips, they slid under the hem of his T-shirt to land on the hot, bare muscles of his lower back, her nails curling into his skin to elicit a hiss from his lips, which she greedily swallowed. The hand in her hair slackened in surprise, and she leaned her head forward, kissing her way to the lobe of his ear, which she took between her teeth and bit just hard enough for him to groan and grab her chin roughly, demanding her lips once again. His hand grasped her hair, harder now, his tongue seeking hers with blind determination. She melted against him, into him—breathless, straining, and out of her mind with longing.
In that moment, he owned her.
And until that moment, Mad had never been owned.
She had been kissed and she had had sex, but never with this sort of rawness, never with this sort of vulnerability. And instinctually she knew why.
Underneath that perfect exterior, I think you’re a little dirty too.
From the moment they’d reconnected tonight, he’d seen through her bullshit veneer of perfection, and it had opened a long-sealed floodgate, making her want to bound forth in a wave of reckless abandon. For the first time in years, she had a glimpse of freedom—freedom from her buttoned-up boyfriend and the predictable future she’d convinced herself she wanted. Fuck pearls and heels; she felt like a goddess in flannel and cotton. And she reveled in the guttural, low-toned sounds of their moans and sighs, the smacking of their lips, and the licking of their tongues. It was a filthy melody she wanted to play on repeat forever.

Excerpt

Hope shook her head. “You’re as much an idiot now as you were then.”

And then she kissed him.

It caught him a little off guard—he hadn’t expected her to be the one to make the first move, especially after the way the scene in the bathroom had gone down—but Daniel wasted no time taking control. He kissed down her neck, sliding his hands beneath her shirt and skating them up to her body to cup her breasts. They filled his palms, familiar and yet not, all at the same time. He cursed. “Gorgeous Darling, the things you do to me.” He nipped her collarbone. “I’m going to taste you, so if you’re going to change your mind, now’s the time to do it.”

Her only response was to shove her yoga pants down to her knees.

He lifted her onto the counter and disentangled her right leg from the pants so he could spread her fully. He stroked her thighs, pausing when his fingers met the scar. It brought up so many conflicting feelings in him. It was his fault that she had the damn thing, but that didn’t mean he thought of her as less, the way she seemed to think. She was as beautiful now as she’d been at eighteen, and more confident despite her injury. Or maybe because of it. He had no idea.

All he knew was that at some point he was going to have to get up close and personal with her healed injury, and he was going to have to tread very, very carefully to avoid burning what was left of the bridge between him and Hope.

“If you apologize, I might actually kick you.”

That snapped him out of it. As much as he wanted Hope, he had an ulterior motive for pushing her now. All getting distracted by her leg was going to do was fuck up his chance of convincing her to stay, in his house and in his bed. He jerked her to the edge of the counter, spreading her thighs wider. “Don’t scream. You’ll upset Ollie.”

And then he did what he’d been fantasizing about ever since he walked out of her life. Daniel dipped his head and gave her center one long lick. She tasted better than he remembered, her body already shaking for him, so he used his thumbs to part her folds and licked her again, reacquainting himself with every inch of her.

“Oh.”

He looked up her body to find her head thrown back and her chest rising and falling with each harsh breath. “Take off your shirt.”

Hope wasted no time obeying, dragging the material over her head and tossing it away. And then there was nothing hiding her body from his gaze. He licked her again, savoring the way she shook. A tattoo curling around the bottom of her ribs caught his eye, but he was too distracted to read it.

He was tired of teasing her. He wanted to feel her orgasm again, to know she was coming apart at the seams because of him. Daniel sucked her clit into his mouth, stroking the sensitive little nub with the flat of his tongue the way she’d always loved. Sure enough, before he had a chance to truly savor her, Hope cried out his name and shuddered, her thighs squeezing his head as she came. He gentled his touches, licks turning to kisses, turning to the slightest brushing of his lips against her. Only when she stopped shaking did he raise his head. “Stay, at least until we figure out what we’re doing.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I loved the first two books in this series from Katee Robert but sadly, A Fool For You didn’t grab me just as much as the others did. Admittedly, this pair were hot when they got it on and they cared so much about each other that they should have been together had things now gone off plot when they were younger.

I didn’t feel as engaged with either Danny or Hope as I was with Adam/Jules or Quinn/Avery. I got that Danny felt responsible for things that had happened all those years ago (even if he was wrong in his thinking) but he had isolated himself so much from everyone and he was in so much of a downer that I wanted to give him a bloody shake for much of the story. Hope, in my opinion, let him off way to easy – again, I got that she loved him as much as she did but I wished she’d give him a shake and make him work harder to get back in her life.

The end disappointed a little too. It felt rushed and things between the pair were settled way too abruptly and far too easily.

All in all it was a decent read, just not as great as the others to be honest. I give A Fool For You 3.75*

Synopsis

Time is running out for Velli’s former mentor, Dr. John Adams. Life caught in the middle of two Spirits is slowly driving both the man and the Lion crazy. Velli is determined to help him out of his bind.

Her plans to take care of the issue and return home quickly are ruined in short order. There’s a war brewing between the Lion and her old friend Derek over the love of Kai. One that has to be resolved just as fast as John needs saved.

Worse, the Raven has his sights set on Velli in hopes of her assistance. She doesn’t know what an ancient Spirit wants from her, but her mistrust of the bird means she wants to avoid him. Circumstance throws her right in his path, and she is intrigued by the mystery she finds.

Velli has to face too many battles that aren’t hers—until an attack on her children. As her world crumbles around her, she and Kane fight to save all the lives hanging in the balance.

Excerpt

On the opposite end of the long hall he emerged into sat the glass doors of the lab. Behind them he could see Kai perched on a stool, her back straight as she tapped on a keyboard. Nearby the large beast of a man that was both Dr. John Adams and the Lion he’d merged with stood at his own computer.

Something the large man said sent Kai laughing so hard, her concentration broke. A flare of jealousy reared its ugly head with a twist in Derek’s gut. Since the Lion had come along things had changed with him and Kai. Her worry for the man and hurting the feelings of either Spirit that was a part of him kept her close to the creature.

Derek kept trying to remind himself that she went home with him, and slept with him. Somehow when those two got together though, he suddenly felt as though he were the odd man out and maybe Kai hadn’t given him everything.

Then he’d remember that he hadn’t given her everything either, and she probably knew it.

He shook off the contemplation. None of that mattered. Today was their anniversary and it would be about them. Without further time to encourage any doubt he pushed open the doors to the lab. “Hey babe.”

She smiled as he crossed the room and tilted her cheek for a kiss. “You’re early.”

“I couldn’t wait any longer. Are you ready to go?” Derek ignored the rumbling growl from the man a few feet away. He slipped his arm around her waist. “I have many promises to keep for our anniversary. I’d like to get started as soon as possible.”

“She is working on something,” John all but snarled.

“She’s always working on something.” Derek couldn’t help but snap back, even as Kai set her hand on his. “Tonight is our anniversary and it’s going to be about us. Lion or no, you possessive beast.”

“Derek.” Kai’s admonishment came with a firm shake of her head. The frown she bore didn’t help his mood one bit. “Just relax. I’m almost done with this.”

John, or rather his Lion, rumbled something under his breath. The man stood staring at his own computer, but Derek knew without checking to see what it was up to that he wasn’t doing anything but stewing in his own juices.

Derek smirked and lifted his head. Sure it was dangerous, and most likely stupid, but he couldn’t help himself but to poke the fire. “Five years. Just imagine, two more years together will be a magical number, won’t it?”

The man’s head shook sharp and fierce, the mane seemed to blossom in the action. Like static electricity had taken hold it rose and grew fuller. Still, he didn’t speak. Yet a dangerous note added to the low rumble.

“Don’t be nasty.” Kai rose to face him. Her hands settled on his shoulders. “You’re only making it harder for him.”

“Why do you care? You’re with me.” Derek narrowed his eyes when she glanced toward John at his statement. “Five years. That’s what we’re celebrating, remember?”

“Of course. He’s my friend, though.” Kai brushed her lips across his. A brutal snarl erupted nearby and she spoke low. “Maybe you should wait outside. I’ll be right there.”

Derek’s rising tension snapped. He was supposed to be her boyfriend, he was sick of playing second fiddle every time the Lion needed placating. “No. I’m sick of waiting while you appease him, Kai.”

The snarl of the Lion erupted into a roar. Before Derek could make sense of what was happening the whole world jarred, the wind knocked out of him hard as he hit the wall of the lab. Several beakers and other minutiae of their work crashed to the floor. “She said to wait outside, you puny little man.”

Derek came to his senses quick enough. He grabbed the man’s wrist with his left hand, and with an ease that seemed to take the Lion off-guard, pried the paw-like hand from his own throat. He used the surprise to his advantage and lashed out with his right foot to kick the man hard enough to knock him into the table into the middle of the room.

Few knew of his secret layer of strength, clearly not even Kai as she shrieked in surprise. “Derek!”

“Me?” Derek glared at her. “What about him? It’s okay for him to shove me into a wall and choke me?”

“You know I don’t…Derek. He can’t control it.” She moved to John’s side. The man was in stunned heap on the floor. From the look of it, both Spirits were in shock and fighting for dominance. Kai touched the mane and the large man jolted in surprise.

Derek let out a bitter laugh. “You know what? Forget it. Happy anniversary, or whatever.”

He tossed the present in their direction. As it slid across the floor and bumped into her leg, he shook his head.

Though she called his name, he ignored her to storm from the lab. Before she could reach him, he’d closed his door. With one swipe of his hand across the keypad he disabled her code so she couldn’t enter.

So much for the idea he could tell her everything.

About the Author

Sarah Cass‘ world is regularly turned upside down by her three special needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers; dabbling in horror, straight fiction and urban fantasy.
She loves historicals and romance, and characters who are real and flawed, so she writes to understand what makes her fictional people tick.
And she lives for a happy ending – eventually. And enough twists to make it look like she enjoys her title of Queen of Trauma Drama a little too much.

An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible; she may emerge scarred, but always stronger.  The rhythms to her activities drive her words forward, pushing her through the labyrinths of the heart and the nightmares of the mind, driving her to find resolutions to her characters’ problems.

Jane isn’t entirely sure that Cinderella got such a raw deal. Sure, she had a rough start, but didn’t she eventually land a prince and a happily-ever-after? Meanwhile, Jane is busy waiting on her demanding, entitled sisters, running her cleaning business, and . . . yep, not a prince in sight. Until a party and a broken shoe incident leave Jane wondering if princes—or at least, a certain deliciously hunky billionaire—maybe do exist.

Except Brock Wellington isn’t anyone’s dream guy. Hell, a prince would never agree to be auctioned off in marriage to the highest bidder. Or act like an arrogant jerk—even if it was just a façade. Now, as Brock is waiting for the auction chopping block, he figures it’s karmic retribution that he’s tempted by a sexy, sassy woman he can’t have. But while they can’t have a fairy-tale ending, maybe they can indulge in a little bit of fantasy . .

Excerpt

The sun burned across a cloudless sky. I felt the intensity of it bake into the skin of my bare shoulders.

Waves crashed against the shore, some carrying surfers with them in the distance. A few feet ahead of me, a small child kicked a sand castle and giggled with his father.

I sat down on a step and slipped my sandals off.

The sand was warm underneath my feet as I dug my toes into it, staring out at the world in front of me. I rubbed a shell between my fingers as I watched a couple walk hand-in-hand toward the pier.

They looked happy. I tried to remember the last time Marcus held my hand, or even reached for it.

My chest burned when I couldn’t conjure up an image in my mind.

I looked down at the faint line marking my left ring finger. The token I was left with now that I no longer wore my ring. It was subtle, thanks to my naturally pale skin, but to me it stood out like embers glowing in the dark.

I hated it. I didn’t need a reminder of how I’d failed as a wife. Or how Marcus stopped seeing me as one.

Maybe I could coat my entire hand in sunblock except for that thin strip. Burn the memory away.

The idea seemed promising enough to consider.

From my back pocket, my cell beeped with an incoming message.

I wiped the tear from my cheek as I stood and palmed my phone, expecting to see Tori’s name lit up on my screen.

I froze on the step, my free hand on the railing as I stared curiously at the message and the number it was sent from.

Wild Girl. Eaten any innocent men alive today yet?

My lip twitched, the hint of a smile.

I sat back down, reading the message a second time as I remembered my conversation with this stranger yesterday.

My accidental verbal beat-down.

Jesus. I really let him have it.

I couldn’t think of the last time I was that embarrassed.

I told the guy to remove a dildo from his mouth, for Christ sakes.

All in all, whoever this was seemed to be a good sport about it. He could’ve laid into me and cussed me out. Made me feel even more like a complete shit for dialing the wrong number and not confirming the identity of my intended victim before I tore into him like he owed me money.

He was more than decent about the whole thing. Easily forgiving.

And now he was messaging me out of nowhere and striking up conversation.

Wild.

He wanted to talk to me.

Huh.

I tapped my thumb on the edge of the phone case, then hovered over the letters of my keypad as I stared at the message.

Did I even want to talk to this guy anymore? Wasn’t this weird? We didn’t know each other. Our encounter was a mistake. A one-time mishap, never to be repeated.

Right?

“Kassidy, I know you’re in there. Please open the door.” There was a sheer curtain over the glass panes and if I moved across the room he’d see me. All I could hear was the thumping of my heart. “Kassidy, please. I need to talk to you. I’m not leaving until I do. You know I won’t.”

“Shit,” I hissed low. He was right. If anyone had the patience to sit around for hours, it was him. He’d done the same thing to me years ago when I told him I wouldn’t go on a date with him. He stayed on my porch for hours and slept on the swing. At the time, I loved his persistence. I wanted to go on a date with him, but I was curious to see how far he’d go.

Knowing he wouldn’t leave unless I made him, I thrust the door open, embracing the anger I felt welling in my chest. I needed it to get rid of him. Logan stepped back and I held my breath, taking in the desperate look in his eyes. For a second, I could feel my resolve slip, but then I remembered the hurtful words he said to me in the hospital.

“There’s nothing to say, Logan. If you want to say you’re sorry, then say the words and get the hell out of here. Other than that, I have no desire to see or talk to you.”

He looked straight into my eyes. “Saying I’m sorry doesn’t even begin to cover it, but I am. I am so fucking sorry for what I did.”

“Great, you said it. We’re done here. Goodbye Logan.” I slammed the door on him and locked it.

“Dammit, Kassie.”

“Don’t call me that!” I shouted, slamming my hand against the door.

He moved closer to the door and I stepped back. “I know you’re pissed at me, but I need you to hear me out. I’ll stay out here the whole night if I have to.”

“Not if I call the police.”

“They’re not gonna be able to do anything to me. At least, not before I get in there myself.” The doorknob wiggled and I gasped.

“What are you doing? You can’t come in here,” I growled.

“Yes, I can, and I will. If it’s the only way to make you listen I don’t care what I have to do.” He fumbled with the doorknob again and I choked, stumbling back into one of my bar stools. I had no doubt he could get in my house, but I wasn’t going to be in it when he did. Grabbing my phone, I jammed it into my back pocket and raced to my bedroom, locking the door behind me. I had to get out of there fast.

I changed into a pair of jeans and fetched my black leather jacket out of my closet so I could put it on. My motorcycle and helmet were in my garage but all I had to do was climb out my window to get to them. “Kassie!” Logan called out. The front door slammed shut and I sucked in a breath; it was time.

Opening my window, I carefully slipped out. Logan knocked on my bedroom door and tried my handle. “Kassidy, please come out. I don’t want to do this.”

As soon as I was out the window, I raced to my garage. Slamming my helmet on my head, I jumped on my bike and turned the key. The engine roared to life as I revved it and I sped out of the garage as fast as I could. Logan had no idea I could ride, but I wished I could see the look on his face when he saw me. All I knew was that I had to get away from him, and fast.

Once out of the driveway, I took a left turn, clearly realizing the lapse in judgment. It was the road I’d avoided ever since Levi died on it. “Dammit,” I cried. My eyes started to water and there was no way I could wipe the tears away with my helmet on and going down the road. The sound of Logan’s bike drew close behind and I panicked. What was I going to do?

He gained up to me, clearly not stopping unless I did. More tears fell down my cheeks; especially when I arrived at the spot where Levi was ran off the road. I pulled over and shut off my bike, ripping off my jacket so I could breathe. Logan parked beside me, but I jumped off my bike and walked away from him to the dented guardrail. I took off my helmet and stared at the rubber markings on the metal. My fingers traced the tire marks and I broke down, falling to my knees. My heart felt as if it’d been ripped out my chest.

Logan’s hands closed over my shoulders, but I smacked them away. “Don’t touch me.”

His touch left my body, but I could feel his warmth as he sat beside. “I didn’t know you could ride.”

“Levi and Sean taught me after you left. It helped get my mind off of things.” I tried not to look down in the ravine where Levi was found, but I couldn’t help it. The amount of pain he must’ve felt had to be excruciating. I slammed my hand against the guardrail and sobbed.

“I’m gonna miss him too, Kassidy. Levi was a good friend.”

Angrily, I wiped my tears away and scoffed. “How would you know? You left eight years ago and never looked back.”
