Imperfections (Book 1)

Who knew falling in love with my best friend had the potential to single-handedly destroy my entire family?

For as long as I could remember I’ve been in love with sexy, lawyer extraordinaire Nicholas Alexander. We always had a certain chemistry growing up. Especially after we shared one passionate, forbidden, perfect kiss as teenagers. For years I hoped he could look past my overprotective brothers and our age difference so we could be more than friends, I was wrong. Four years ago I left New York and my heart behind. Now I’m back to stake a claim on the only man I’ve ever loved. But unbeknownst to me, things are way more complicated than I could imagine when I learn he’s engaged, to my sister.

Will the love and desire I feel for the one man I’ve ever truly wanted destroy me? Am I willing to risk it all, for a chance at everlasting love?

Catherine Reed is the one woman I couldn’t have but the one I always wanted. She was my best friend’s baby sister which means she was definitely off limits to me and anyone else if I had my way. Not even having a merry-go-round of beautiful girls could stop me from wanting her. Watching her leave was hard but I knew giving in to what I wanted back then would ruin her…us. All I’ve ever wanted was for her to be happy and to see her beautiful smile.

I haven’t gotten to where I am by always doing what’s right. She’s Back. I want Her. I have every intention of making her Mine.

 Come to Light (Book 2)

After years of wanting her and fighting against myself, I finally had her. For one brief weekend I was whole, looking into the eyes of the woman I’ve always loved. The one person I’d do anything for.

Catherine Reed is the love of my life, but I blew it when she discovered her sister and I were engaged. But things have changed.

I know she doesn’t want anything to do with me, she needs time. Time to heal and repair the damage the discovery of our relationship did to her and her family. I’m willing to give her time, but I will not give up on us. She is my one true addiction and a love as strong as ours is worth fighting for.

Coming back to New York to be with my family and the man I’ve always loved seemed like the perfect plan. Little did I know that I’d be living in a kind of hell after my family turned against me. In the end, I had no choice but to let go of the love of my life, Nicholas Alexander.

I’m not sure if I can ever truly recover from losing a once-in-a-lifetime love and I know things will never be the same with my family. I didn’t think my life could get more complicated, but I was wrong. Consequences for the choices we’ve made may cost me everything.

BLOG TOUR ~ The Contract Blog Tour by Melanie Moreland

  Title: The Contract

By: Melanie Moreland

Publication Date: May 24, 2016

Genre: Romance

A tyrant by day, a playboy by night. That is the reputation that precedes Richard VanRyan. He lives life the way he wants, no concern for the opinion of others. He cares for no one, is completely unrepentant, and he has no desire to change his ways.

Katharine Elliott works under Richard as his PA. She despises him and his questionable ethics, but endures all the garbage he sends her way, because she needs the job. Her end goal is far more important than the daily abuse and demands she tolerates from her nasty tyrant of a boss.

Until the day, he asks her for something she never expected. A new role with a personal contract — fiancée instead of PA.

What happens when two people who loathe each other, have to live together and act as though they are madly in love?

Sparks.

That’s what happens.

Can the power of love really change a person?

Will they survive the contract?

What do you do when the one person you hate the most becomes the one person you can’t live without?

I tilted my head. “I apologize. I’ll try to do better. Is there anything else you want since we’re putting everything on the table?”

She hesitated, her fingers worrying the ugly shirt she wore.

“Spit it out.”

“You can’t, um, you can’t mess around while we’re doing . . . while we’re together.”

“Mess around?”

She looked everywhere but at me. “You can’t sleep with other women. I won’t be humiliated like that.”

“So what you’re saying is: I can’t fuck anyone?”

Her cheeks were so red I thought her head would explode; however, she straightened her shoulders and looked right at me. “Yes.”

This was too fun for me.

“Yes, I can fuck around?”

“No!”

“No fucking,” I enunciated the last word.

“No.”

“You expect me to remain celibate the whole time?” I asked, now incredulous.

“I will be, so I expect you to do the same.”

I snorted. “I doubt it’s anything new for you.”

She threw up her hands. “That’s it. You want to fuck someone? Go fuck yourself, VanRyan.”

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

I adored Over the Fence by Melanie Moreland and I wasn’t sure how she could top it….. then she gave us The Contract!!!

Katharine Elliott was a total sweetheart, everyone really liked her (apart from her boss and his PA, but hey, those two don’t count!!). She worked hard, put up with all sorts of crud – to the point that I was worried that she was gonna be a complete doormat – and she was dealing with some heavy personal issues!
And so to our leading man.. Oh my gods… I lost count of the number of times I wanted to smack Richard VanRyan, smack him and never stop!! The guy was a complete douche, honestly, how someone like Katy could work for him and not tell him to GTF at least once was beyond me. He was overbearing, rude, cold, thoughtless and arrogant… but after a while I really began to like him (yeah, crazy as it sounds!). Melanie gave us the book in the main from Richard’s POV (which I loved as I do enjoy getting into the mind of a male lead)

As the story progressed we began to see that both characters had a lot more to them than originally thought. Richard brought out the spunky, feisty side to her that he never realised she had – ‘cos he never gave her the time of day except to belittle or criticize her. She in turn brought out facets of him that he had lost that began to change who he was, what he wanted and how he viewed life.

The Contract had me all over the place emotionally. Towards the end it did get a teeny bit on the overly sweet side, but this in no way detracted from the story or my enjoyment of it!

It is safe to say that Melanie is now on my fave author list and I can’t wait to see what she brings us next!!

A definite 5* ‘must read’ IMHO!!!

Melanie Moreland lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-six-plus years. Nothing means more to her than her friends and family, and she cherishes every moment spent with them.

Known as the quiet one with the big laugh, Melanie works at a local university and for its football team. Her job, while demanding, is rewarding as she cheers on her team to victory.

While seriously addicted to coffee, and highly challenged with all things computer-related and technical, she relishes baking, cooking, and trying new recipes for people to sample. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys travelling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.

Melanie delights in a good romance story with some bumps along the way, but is a true believer in happily ever after. When her head isn’t buried in a book, it is bent over a keyboard, furiously typing away as her characters dictate their creative storylines to her, often with a large glass of wine keeping her company.

Divine Merit – Excerpt
“Your Guard can no longer be trusted; surely even you can understand that. Was it not a member of your own Guard who killed our dear king?” Sorin couldn’t hide his smugness at being able to deliver this news to the crowd. It seemed like everyone drew in a sharp breath at the same time. The crowd began to stir and murmurs of Levi’s absence could be heard.
“Where did you hear that lie?” Amira asked defiantly.
“Lie? Was it not your Guard Levi’s own weapon that killed our king? Where is Levi, by the way?”
Sorin posed his questions as if he were on a stage performing and repeating his lines. But who wrote the script? How did he have the details of the murder and Levi’s disappearance? The crowd was buying into his act and was becoming increasingly louder.
“The murderer has yet to be identified. As for my Guard’s whereabouts, that is not your concern,” Amira said with confidence, trying to convey a calm and strength she didn’t feel.
“It is all of our concern, Princess. Your safety is vital to us all,” he countered. Turning to address the crowd once again, he fairly shouted, “Our princess is in danger from her own Guard. This is unacceptable. While her loyalty is admirable, it is misplaced. Grief clouds her thinking. We cannot know how many of the Royal Guard were in involved in the murder of our dearest king. We must insist on the princess’s safety!”
Sorin had riled the crowd into a frenzy; people were now pushing and yelling. Pleas from the crowd could be heard, along with outrage at the Guard. Things were quickly getting out of hand.
“All right, quiet, please,” Amira addressed the crowd. “Please listen to me!” She had to raise her voice to get their attention; she wasn’t used to shouting, but it was vital that she gain their attention and find a way to calm them. After a couple of seconds, the crowd began to still.
“Arrest the Royal Guard!” Sorin commanded into the quiet before Amira could continue.
“No!” Amira screamed, finally pushing herself between Sorin’s soldiers and her Guard, much to their frustration and attempts to keep her surrounded. “No one touches my Guard!”
Beginning to feel exhausted and completely panicked, she struggled to find an amicable solution. Her people were grieving, making their reaction unpredictable. In addition, an altercation between her Guard and Sorin’s soldiers would only serve to antagonize them further. Even outnumbered, her Guard had a good chance at defeating the soldiers, but considering the circumstances, she couldn’t take that risk.
She took a deep breath and tried to sound reasonable and in control. “Sorin, for my people’s peace of mind, I will allow your soldiers’ protection for the time being. That will free my Guard for the more important task of bringing my father’s murderer to justice.”
She could hear her Guard’s anger and displeasure, but she ignored them, except to give a shake of her head as they once again approached trying to surround her.
She turned to address the crowd. “Levi and the rest of my Guard are not responsible for the death of the king and will not be treated as such or punished in any way.” She made sure her tone was commanding and clear.
Sorin nodded once to his soldiers to stand down. “Come along, Princess,” he commanded, completely ignoring her Guard now that he felt as if he had won.
“I will have a private word with my Guard before they are relieved of duty.”
“I don’t think…” Sorin began.
“That was not a request,” Amira snapped, completely out of patience. She pushed through the group, no one daring to get in her way, and took her Guard into a private chamber.
“No,” was Caeden’s immediate response as the door closed.
“You must,” she tried to sound firm, but her voice wavered. They all began to speak at once.
“We are loyal to you, Princess!”
“This is not acceptable.”
“We can take them all.”
And all sorts of angry grumbling could be heard.
“I know you are not responsible,” Amira began with complete confidence. “This is actually a good thing. Now you will have time to find Levi and clear his name.”
“Your safety comes first. Always,” Caeden said adamantly.
“Please,” she whispered to Caeden alone, looking into his eyes. She took his hand and continued softly. “I need your help. Find my father’s killer. This is important to me and if you aren’t wasting time babysitting me, you’ll have more time to devote to the search. Please, Caeden.”
He had never heard Amira beg for anything; it caused his guts to knot and pain to fill his chest. He was torn between wanting to bring her justice and not wanting to leave her side.
“I don’t trust Sorin or his men,” Caeden made one last objection.
“Neither do I, but since he has sworn to my safety in front of everyone, he cannot afford to let anything happen to me.” She hoped, at least. Amira knew her Guard was not pleased, but she could tell by their grim expressions they would do as she asked. When Caeden started to pull his hand from hers, she felt a stir of panic and tightened her grip. He met her eyes as she whispered, “Hurry back to me.”
“Always,” he vowed. Caeden leaned into Amira until their bodies were almost touching. He no longer cared if they were alone. “Amira…” he whispered, using her given name for the first time.
She couldn’t let him finish whatever he was going to say. “Please, Caeden. This is the only way. I can’t allow you to be imprisoned. I lied. I do need your help… I need you.”
Seeing her fight back the tears in her beautiful grey eyes filled him with an impotent rage and a deep ache in his chest; he felt damn near out of control. He took a deep breath to steady himself; losing control wouldn’t help her. He brought his forehead down to rest against hers and caressed her cheek gently with his calloused fingers, wiping away the single tear, which had finally fallen.
“When this is over, you and I are going to have another discussion about needs.” He kissed her lips softly. “I’ll make this right,” he swore to her, “then we’ll talk.”
She gave him a smile, which didn’t reach her eyes, and nodded to him. It nearly crushed him, but Caeden turned away from her, signaled to his men, and left her in the hands of another.
*****
Amira’s legs collapsed from under her as the door clicked closed behind the last of her Guard. She had used all of her remaining energy standing up to Sorin and then pretending to be strong while sending her Guard away. She knew if they had any idea how weak she felt, she would never have been able to persuade them to leave her. She fell to her knees in despair. Feeling lost and alone, her tears flowed freely.

I graduated from Eastfield College and live in a small town in Texas with my husband, two children, and my cute little dogs Reeces and Pancake. I work full-time, on top of editing for Hot Tree Editing and writing for myself has been an on going process for a few years now. My busy life means when I can I seek out relaxation by escaping into a good book. Inspired by the many amazing indie authors I’ve met along my editing journey, I found the courage to follow my dream of publishing my first novel.

I fully embrace my one-click addiction, always love the idea of a happily ever after, but there is no denying I have a massive soft spot for the bad boys.
Kick back and share the journey with me it will be quite a ride!
