Welcome back to Carol Falls, Vermont, with this fifth book from the Frost Family Christmas/Frost Family & Friends series.
Heather Connolly has done some questionable things in the past. But it was all to regain custody of her six-year-old daughter, Charlotte. Finally together, Heather is now planning the perfect Christmas for her little girl.
Until police officers show up at the door and arrest Heather for robbery and arson.
Only one man can help prove her innocence. It’s Zack Jones, a volunteer firefighter…and the man she ran out on after their first and only night together.
Can he give her The Greatest Gift this Christmas, and once again unite Heather with her daughter? Or will Heather’s past keep her from Charlotte forever?
- This story is a stand-alone sweet romance/cozy mystery. Series readers will enjoy catching up with town news and the latest happenings of the Frost Family…including a wedding.
Heather’s hand trembled as she reached up to insert the key in the lock. Zack took it from her and opened the door himself.
“It wasn’t easy for me to tell you those things today. I always worry people are going to…”
When she hesitated, he cupped her chin and raised her gaze to his. “Go on,” he said, hoping he was ready to hear the rest.
“I worry people will judge me.”
Judge her? All he wanted to do was hold her. Defend her. “I’ll stop by tomorrow. Take you out for dinner.”
“You want to be seen with me? After the reaction I got at the diner?”
“That was a few, ignorant people. Don’t pay any attention to them.”
“Still…I’m not ready to have dinner with a man, Zack.”
Not after the suffering she’d endured from her ex-husband.
Zack hid his disappointment, and downplayed the date-aspect of his offer. “It won’t be anything fancy. Just two pals getting together for burgers. Besides, we need to plan our next move in the investigation. Remember?”
Zack stepped closer, put one hand on her shoulder. Damn, she looked so vulnerable. “If you need me in the meantime, call my cell.”
He kissed her forehead. A friendly peck. One you might plant on your mom to wish her happy birthday. At least, that’s what he’d intended. With Heather standing so close, and the warmth of her skin on his lips, and her scent filling his lungs, he wanted more.
He slid both arms around her and dipped his head, before his brain clicked in and he realized what a stupid move it would be.
They were buddies. End of story. And she was too messed up right now for him to confuse the situation. She’d responded to his hug. Might even kiss him back. Maybe fall into bed with him, as she had that night a year ago—seeking pleasure from a man’s touch, instead of the usual torture.
But it was wrong. She wasn’t ready. Mentally, he kicked himself for even thinking about it. For needing it so bad.
