BLP REVIEW ~ Rebecca

There is nothing better than a cheeky, funny, hot and sexy novella which catches up with characters you have enjoyed and enlarges where life together is taking them. When that novella is by Helena Hunting its also packed with  banter, innuendos, humour and sex so it’s chock full (think Alex Waters MC full!) of goodness!

Randy and Lily have a leap off the pages and engulf you chemistry from the start and their relationship in Pucked Over was a rollercoaster ride, now they are settling in to a life together, mixing worlds – friends, family and day to day life, finding their way. I adored the vulnerability shown this time in the characters especially Randy and Sunny while losing none of the crazy, Violet’s antics and mouth are comedy genius, I’m also intrigued to know more of Darren and Charlene’s story. There is a lot of development, character and storyline, it’s sweet and sassy, hot and sexy, funny and rude in exactly the right mix.

From the first book Pucked to this new novella Pucked Under Helena Hunting has delivered every single time, entertaining, silly, outrageous, sheer escapism of the very best kind.

Violence corroded her…

Obedience defiled her…

Fear kept her chained…

Freedom is hard to embrace when she’s never learned to trust. Yet in the span of a second, she grabs a single opportunity and runs toward it. Straight into the sanctuary of a pub at the end of a wharf.

She doesn’t understand the concept of friendship. She’s never felt the connection of a relationship. She’s as innocent as the driven snow and yet tainted with corruption. Still, she finds herself surrounded by people who accept her, without even knowing the first thing about her. But one of them is determined to dig deeper.

He treasures his friends, yet he’s steered clear of committed relationships. He likes his life comfortably predictable and entirely controlled. Until it isn’t. For months he’s avoided interacting with The Skipper’s newest addition. Perhaps realizing that once he looked deeply into those liquid brown eyes, he wouldn’t be able to turn away.

When his present and her past puts them both on the brink of change, they are forged through fire as one.

BLP Reviews

Tracy

Madre de Dios !!! (to quote our leading lady, Ruby) Freya Barker has done it again!!

From one of, in my humble opinion, the best series EVER…. Through Fire is a gut wrenching, heart-breaking story but as we’ve come to expect from Freya, it’s also filled with hope, strength, heat and a really strong sense of family…

Ms Barker writes REAL…. Her stories are full of very real issues: at times it’s hard going and upsetting, the tales aren’t pretty and the situations our main characters (the leading ladies in particular in the Portland, ME series) find themselves in are dark, scary, totally incomprehensible, horrendously shocking and unbelievably brutal, but they are also what we read/hear about in the news (sadly on a near regular basis it seems) – they are things that we know are happening in the world around us but that we cannot begin to understand as, in the main, most of us will fortunately never be thrust into these dark and horrendous situations.

Through her writing and storytelling Freya gives us an insight into the misery and devastation that her characters experience – but she also shows us just how strong people can be that they can survive these nightmares and not only come out the other side but do so with determination, strength of character and an overwhelming desire to LIVE.

For me, Ruby’s story is the darkest and hardest to read of the series to date but she is a fantastic character who, with the support of friends and ‘chosen family’ at the The Skipper, manages to overcome her demons and look towards a future that she never considered she’d ever have..

Tim is the leading man in Through Fire – we’ve met him previously in the series and I must admit that after some of his actions and attitude in Cruel Water (book #2) he wasn’t my favourite fella but I’m happy to admit that my feelings towards his character definitely changed whilst reading his and Ruby’s book.

Packed with suspense, intrigue, attraction, heat and passion and featuring the well loved characters that we have already met in the series to date,Through Fire is an exceptional read and another fantastic instalment in thePortland, ME series.
If you’ve already dipped your toe into the writing of Freya Barker this book will be a hit with you. For those who haven’t yet tried any of her books I recommend that you give them a chance – you will not be disappointed.

Rebecca

Well I’m here again Mrs Late as Usual, middle name procrastination.

So late that many reviews have been written for the books in the Portland ME series, some beautifully eloquent and many emotional and descriptive. There is very little I can add, nothing I will say better but here’s the thing, when it’s an author who has given me the hours of pleasure that Freya Barker has, then I kind of have to get the fuck over myself and make an effort (eventually!) whether eloquent or not because reviews help the authors to get better seen on Amazon, and as a reader help sometimes if on the fence whether to one click or not, they are a personal opinion and whether rambling and nonsensical, eloquent with beauty or somewhere in between with a colourful vocabulary (just the odd fuck or two!) worth writing.

Freya Barker has fast become a favourite of mine and her first book Slim to None in the Cedar Tree series is one of my go to books to reread when I have a book hangover or I’m in a funk and nothing new is grabbing my attention, both the other two on that go to list are by Kristen Ashley (Lady Luck and Motorcycle Man). Both authors, for me, write the best Alpha male book boyfriends, strong and sexy with a side of protective and yet a vulnerability that draws you, the warmth and affection between couple, friends and family shines through and the cast of secondary characters is always outstanding. What I also love is that different series have different feels yet the core ingredients are the same, so I know chances are I will like anything new either one writes and the quality is consistent and high.

If you have read any of the Cedar Tree series then you already know that Ms Barker is happy to go where many authors fear to tread, real, disabilities, warts, issues and all the ugly of life, she does it incredibly well and you get the Happy Ever After but it doesn’t feel Disney unattainable, it’s real and in your grasp. Seamless, effortless, flawless writing. I wrote in a review for one of Ms Barker’s books and end up repeating it now every time because it’s just so true;

She dares to go where few authors will risk, writing older characters with health issues, disabilities, the reality and the fantasy seamlessly intertwined and breathtakingly beautiful.

With the Portland Me series Freya Barker has stepped up the ‘Real’, the issues dealt with are horrific, the type many people skirt around, don’t talk about, read about, or watch any media about, the shit in the world that people know happens but avoid because it makes them uncomfortable. The subtle sensitivity of Freya Barker’s writing means the emotional response hits with a visceral impact however never feels too much, too real. She tackles these subjects many will not and wraps them up in a romance that satisfies the sweet and the hot we love while bringing an awareness of horrors that happen. She has given us an absolutely beautiful raw series that celebrates the strength of the human spirit and our ability to overcome.

From Dust

Sydney is lost, after a tragic event which would change and define anyone’s life she is homeless, jobless and adrift with no support system to help.

Gunnar is doing his best to be a single parent, run a business and deal with life’s day to day battles.

Their story is not an easy read, their path is difficult, full of drama and issues, the tragedy in Syd’s past has broken her and forgiveness is not easy but when I finished this story it was with respect for the human spirit, a belief in the power of second chances and I’m not even going to apologise for lowering the tone but a total lady boner for Gunnar. That man is magnificent!

Cruel Water

Cruel Water is not an easy read, has some sensitive triggers and drew an extremely emotional response from me which is not easy, I can name on one hand the books I have shed a tear over in the last five years. There was one point in this story where I had to put it down, refused to press for the next page, lump in my throat and tears threatening, I knew what was waiting for me, knew the horror about to be confirmed and was so invested that I just couldn’t, for characters to be this alive, the story to have grabbed me so completely I am gutted, is special. Whether in book, song or film form the written word when wielded well is powerful, in content, in message, it can be thought provoking, raw, sometimes brutal, but also emotional, beautiful and in the same way that certain songs resonant with us, haunting, played time after time because something, be it the melody, lyrics, the voice, something hits us deep inside and demands a response Cruel Water is such a book. In much the same way that Hello by Adele, Clown by Emeli Sande, Thinking Out Loud by Ed Sheeran, Desperado by the Eagles, Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole feed my soul and when in a funk I return to them on a frequent basis because they have the power to change my mood and perspective, Cruel Water does the same. Ike and Viv’s story is powerful, harsh, uplifting and emotional, it’s raw, unapologetic but subtly and sensitively handled. If only every Viv in this world could find her Ike and if only those who should protect, nurture and love us unconditionally always did.

Through Fire

Ruby is one of the strongest females it’s been my pleasure to read, her story will break your heart, to even contemplate the horror of what happens to her and the age at which her life becomes unravelled is shocking and traumatic. Flawed, real, ugly at times yet compelling and riveting Ruby’s story had me rooting for her HEA, for her to see the strength and beauty of her soul not the broken and battered person circumstances made her. Tim redeemed himself completely with his handling and support for her, after Cruel Water I had him down as a bit of a selfish douche, how wrong was I and I’m happy for that!

I have been very deliberately vague with specifics because all three of these books have such impact I don’t want to give spoilers, you can see the blurb, you can see the reviews and you will make a decision on whether to one click and buy, all I’ve tried to do – no doubt ineloquently and rambling as usual – is express my feelings and emotional response to them. As I’ve said already we all ignore the uncomfortable shit sometimes, things that happen in this fucked up world that we feel if we can’t influence or are not personally affected by, move along, nothing to see here, as you were but that solves nothing and is insulting to those going through these horrors, so Bravo to Ms Barker for taking on these stories, for handling them the way she does and for raising awareness, to say “yes shit happens but how we handle it is important”, for those who inflict it, for those supporting and loving the victims and for those it happens to with the courage to overcome, stand strong and be a victim no longer. Every story is this series is inspirational, shows just how strong the human spirit can be, how, if you are truly lucky and find your “PERSON”, then the sky is the limit for new starts and a life full of love, hope, possibilities and happiness. Isn’t that what we all search and hope for? That’s a life worth living.

When you wanna show a woman that she’s what’s lighting the fire in your gut, though… quick and innocent pecks just don’t do the trick. Nah, a man goes dark and dirty for that kind of lesson. He wants his woman wet and hot. And he wants her that way everywhere. Her mouth. Her core. Everywhere.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

Gods, I thought Orla was great before I read ‘Wed by Wednesday’ but the lady has just gone up a peg now that I’ve finished her story!!

I loved reading about how she and Jethro got together. Jethro was nothing like Orla expected, granted, initially he was a bit of an ungracious git (reasons for which are very quickly clear) but Orla had enough spunk, sass and determination about her that nothing the big sexy farmer threw at her put her off too much!

Although this was a novella it didn’t feel short or quick in any way. It was funny, sweet, hot and sexy – just what you’d expect from the Sarah O’Rourke gals!! I’m not gonna say anything else about the story…. just that you should jump right in and find out how Jethro and Orla’s life together began!

A perfect way to end the Passion in Paradise series! ❤

Jethro’s lips kicked up in a sly half-smile at her sudden movement. It was like he knew he was getting to her and he enjoyed that knowledge immensely. “There’s no way you’re not from the city. Nashville or Knoxville, maybe,” he murmured, before shaking his head.   “Nah, I’m bettin’ you came in from Atlanta.”

“How…how did you know that?” Orla stuttered, her eyebrows furrowing with consternation.   Just what she needed in her life – an intelligent jackass.

“That fancy hair.   Your pretty dress. Those shiny shoes that, if you look, you can see your reflection lookin’ back. And those heels of yours aren’t scuffed, so you’ve been riding, not walking. Your clothes are too wrinkled to be from Nashville or Knoxville, so you’re just rumpled enough to have gotten off the bus from Atlanta,” he surmised, with a know-it-all grin as her cheeks reddened with embarrassment. “Oh, yeah!   You’re city bred from the top of your head to the tip of your toes. And a fussy little lady like you ain’t gonna find what she’s lookin’ for in Paradise.”

“Actually, son…” Jethro’s mother began to hedge, biting her lip as she turned to look up into her son’s face. “She has found just what she’s been missing.”

Biting her lip, Orla winced as Jethro frowned at his step mother. The woman, however, didn’t look overly worried about her son’s imminent reaction and she wondered if things would work out alright after all.

Jethro frowned.   “Mother McKinnon, we don’t have time for…”

“Oh, just rip the bandage off, Lydia,” Nellie ordered, interrupting Jethro as she bustled over to where they all stood together. “Jethro, meet your future wife,” the waitress decreed, flapping a hand at where Orla stood, nose to chest with him. “Take a minute and let this settle in your bones, boy.   Your much beloved step-momma done went and ordered you up a bride for hire.”

Hope shook her head. “You’re as much an idiot now as you were then.”

And then she kissed him.

It caught him a little off guard—he hadn’t expected her to be the one to make the first move, especially after the way the scene in the bathroom had gone down—but Daniel wasted no time taking control. He kissed down her neck, sliding his hands beneath her shirt and skating them up to her body to cup her breasts. They filled his palms, familiar and yet not, all at the same time. He cursed. “Gorgeous Darling, the things you do to me.” He nipped her collarbone. “I’m going to taste you, so if you’re going to change your mind, now’s the time to do it.”

Her only response was to shove her yoga pants down to her knees.

He lifted her onto the counter and disentangled her right leg from the pants so he could spread her fully. He stroked her thighs, pausing when his fingers met the scar. It brought up so many conflicting feelings in him. It was his fault that she had the damn thing, but that didn’t mean he thought of her as less, the way she seemed to think. She was as beautiful now as she’d been at eighteen, and more confident despite her injury. Or maybe because of it. He had no idea.

All he knew was that at some point he was going to have to get up close and personal with her healed injury, and he was going to have to tread very, very carefully to avoid burning what was left of the bridge between him and Hope.

“If you apologize, I might actually kick you.”

That snapped him out of it. As much as he wanted Hope, he had an ulterior motive for pushing her now. All getting distracted by her leg was going to do was fuck up his chance of convincing her to stay, in his house and in his bed. He jerked her to the edge of the counter, spreading her thighs wider. “Don’t scream. You’ll upset Ollie.”

And then he did what he’d been fantasizing about ever since he walked out of her life. Daniel dipped his head and gave her center one long lick. She tasted better than he remembered, her body already shaking for him, so he used his thumbs to part her folds and licked her again, reacquainting himself with every inch of her.

“Oh.”

He looked up her body to find her head thrown back and her chest rising and falling with each harsh breath. “Take off your shirt.”

Hope wasted no time obeying, dragging the material over her head and tossing it away. And then there was nothing hiding her body from his gaze. He licked her again, savoring the way she shook. A tattoo curling around the bottom of her ribs caught his eye, but he was too distracted to read it.

He was tired of teasing her. He wanted to feel her orgasm again, to know she was coming apart at the seams because of him. Daniel sucked her clit into his mouth, stroking the sensitive little nub with the flat of his tongue the way she’d always loved. Sure enough, before he had a chance to truly savor her, Hope cried out his name and shuddered, her thighs squeezing his head as she came. He gentled his touches, licks turning to kisses, turning to the slightest brushing of his lips against her. Only when she stopped shaking did he raise his head. “Stay, at least until we figure out what we’re doing.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I loved the first two books in this series from Katee Robert but sadly, A Fool For You didn’t grab me just as much as the others did. Admittedly, this pair were hot when they got it on and they cared so much about each other that they should have been together had things now gone off plot when they were younger.

I didn’t feel as engaged with either Danny or Hope as I was with Adam/Jules or Quinn/Avery. I got that Danny felt responsible for things that had happened all those years ago (even if he was wrong in his thinking) but he had isolated himself so much from everyone and he was in so much of a downer that I wanted to give him a bloody shake for much of the story. Hope, in my opinion, let him off way to easy – again, I got that she loved him as much as she did but I wished she’d give him a shake and make him work harder to get back in her life.

The end disappointed a little too. It felt rushed and things between the pair were settled way too abruptly and far too easily.

All in all it was a decent read, just not as great as the others to be honest. I give A Fool For You 3.75*

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

A broken hero (who doesn’t believe he’s a hero!) and a sweet, caring heroine who hasn’t had the easiest of times all add up to a really great read from Sarah Robinson

Miles is a Marine who has been gone for 8 years and has finally decided it’s time to return home when he discovers that his dad is ill. Zoe is a live-in nurse who has been caring for his father. Though Miles doesn’t believe he’s relationship material and Zoe has issues from her past that make her wary about getting involved, there is an instant attraction to each other when they meet on Miles return home.

Their road to a relationship wasn’t easy, they both had issues that they had to deal with and Miles especially had trouble discussing what was actually was at the root of his hesitance to get fully involved with Zoe.

Filled with emotion, love, family and friendship, a little heartache and a lot of red hot sexy times, Not A Hero was a well written story that I thoroughly enjoyed. I found the supporting characters likable and interesting, especially Walter, Miles dad, and I hope we find out more about Tobin, our hero’s best friend and fellow Marine.

A 4* read that I would thoroughly recommend to any readers that like a hero who’s a little busted and broken and a heroine with a big heart.

July Dupree and Dean ‘PD’ Hargrove fell head over heels in love. When PD comes home to tell July the good news about joining the SWAT team as a tactical medic, everything changes.

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I really do love the Kilgore Fire series from Lani Lynn Vale and I think that Controlled Burn is my favourite book yet. I’m in a real ‘second chance love’ zone at the moment and this book ticked all the boxes for me – so much so that I read it in one sitting.

July and Dean were great together until she couldn’t cope with his job and then things fell apart. A year later they are still apart, both of them miserable without the other, and when life aligns to bring them back together they both want things to work out this time!

This pair were smokin’ hot when they got together. They loved each other to distraction, were a really good fit and I was rooting for them to work things out from the very beginning.

I love that Lani has built such a ‘family’ within the series and catching up with the other firefighters and their significant others was great.

I cannot wait for the next installment in this fab series.

He can’t help claiming her. But can he love her?

Max Anderson enjoys all the perks of being a star NFL quarterback―including the women. He has no intention of changing his carefree, hard-loving lifestyle … until a twist of fate reunites him with the girl he knew growing up.

Abby Morrison has worked hard to become a physical therapist. She knows she needs to keep things professional with Max — but the truth is, she’s always loved him. Back then, she hid it. Now, it’s not so easy.

As they rekindle their friendship, the heat between them is impossible to ignore. Soon it flares out of control, and the fallout threatens to ruin everything. Can they salvage a future together … or will the consequences wreck their lives?

The time came around nine o’clock when we’d all stuffed ourselves. Abby stood up from the table, a little wobbly. I swooped in, waiting for her to decide it was time to go.

“Come on. I’ll take you home,” I murmured, taking her by the elbow. She looked up at me.

“No,” she murmured.

“What?”

“No. I don’t want you to take me home. Now will you move?”

“Wait. Slow down.”

“I want somebody else, Max. Now move.”

“Who?”

“Anybody. It doesn’t matter. Just not you.” She shook me off—thank God we’d both been whispering, or practically, because it didn’t seem like anybody else noticed. I followed her out the door to the restaurant’s entrance.

“You can’t drive in this condition,” I warned her.

“Then I’ll get a cab. You can leave now.” She glared at me, her cheeks flushed.

“What?”

“You ruined it. You always ruin it.”

“How the hell did I ruin anything?”

She looked back into the restaurant, frowning. “I was having fun. People were talking to me, seeing me, liking me. And you had to take over like you always do.”

My car pulled up in front of us, and I took the keys from the valet. “Come on. I’ll drive you home, and we can talk about it on the way.” I practically threw her into the car before she could curse me out, then got in myself. Once I locked the doors from my side, she couldn’t open them.

“What the fuck Max!” She slapped the dashboard, then sank into her seat with a groan. “I was having fun. I was about to get laid, damn it!”

I bit my tongue until I calmed down. “By whom?”

“I don’t know! What did it matter? I was gonna get some for me, for once. And you won’t let me. I have to always be there for you, but you can never be there for me. You couldn’t just let me enjoy myself. No, you probably wanted to tell me all about your stupid fucking cheerleader girlfriend and ask me what you should do about her!” There was so much venom in her voice. She hated me.

I pulled over to the shoulder of the road. “What are you doing?” she asked. I unbuckled my belt without saying a word, then turned to her.

“You wanna know why I wanted to take you home?” I reached out, grabbing her by the shoulders. I pulled her to me before she could push me away and crushed my mouth against hers.

She only fought me for a split second before giving in. She sighed, relaxing, and I wrapped my arms around her. Her lips were so sweet, soft and yielding. When I slid my tongue between them, they opened to give me better access. I tasted the inside of her mouth, taking my time. This girl who had been my friend for so long, and she was right—I’d used her in a way. This girl who was always there for me without asking anything in return. This sexy, incredible girl.

The kiss deepened, with her tongue dancing alongside mine. She wrapped her arms around my neck, almost growling. Sounding hungry, desperate. I ran one of my hands over her body, listening to the way the breath caught in her throat. She whined a little, pressing against me, and when I made contact with her tits she moaned into my mouth.

By the time the kiss ended, we were both breathless. Her eyes were wide, stunned.

“That’s why,” I whispered, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

Stadium of Lights was a good read, although I must admit that I’d didn’t enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed the last book of Tia’s that I read!

Max drove me up the wall at points – he was full of himself, a walking, talking ego and not very likable at the start of the book (he did get better as the story went on). He wasn’t sure that he was interested in Abby but was p’d off that one of his teammates was interested.. talk about mixed signals for a gal!!!
Abby was likable though I would have preferred her to have more confidence when dealing with Max at times. She’s worked hard to get where she is and is really good at what she does, she should have kept that in mind and not had dips of self-doubt at times!
One thing that I’m not a fan of in books is a lack of communication and this happened with these two at points… and a couple of things were kinda rushed or not cleared up which I thought could have been rounded off.

When they got together they were smokin’ hot, they had a connection, good banter, they liked each other and worked well together.

As I said, a good read, not one I’m not sure I’ll go back and reread but I’m looking forward to what Tia has next!! 3.75*.

SPOTLIGHT ~ Reckless in Texas (Texas Rodeo, #1) by Kari Lynn Dell

image001Title: Reckless in Texas

Series: Texas Rodeo, #1

Author: Kari Lynn Dell

Pubdate: August 2nd 2016

ISBN: 9781492631941

Violet Jacobs is fearless. At least, that’s what the cowboys she snatches from under the hooves of bucking horses think. Outside the ring, she’s got plenty of worries rattling her bones: her young son, her mess of a love life, and lately, her family’s struggling rodeo. When she takes business into her own hands and hires on a hotshot bullfighter, she expects to start a ruckus. She never expected Joe Cassidy. Rough and tumble, cocky and charming, Joe’s everything a superstar should be—and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out he’s way out of Violet’s league.

Joe came to Texas to escape a life spiraling out of control. He never planned on sticking around, and he certainly never expected to call this dry and dusty backwater home. But Violet is everything he never knew he was missing, and the deeper he’s pulled into her beautiful mess of a family, the more he realizes this fierce rodeo girl may be offering him the one thing he never could find on his own.

A Letter from the Author

Dear Reader,

There’s something about a rodeo. The scent of early morning dew and the quiet crunch of gravel under metal shoes. The first drowsy simmer of excitement wakened by the dull thud of hooves on rubber as horses hop into the trailer. One last check to be sure all the rope bags and bridles and the one certain saddle blanket are packed into the tack compartment. The life-giving aroma of coffee in travel mugs, and a half-hearted debate about whose turn it is to climb behind the wheel, and who drove last time, and yeah, honey, I know you hate those idiot Portland drivers. I’ve got that shift.

There’s something about a rodeo that takes you to places you would otherwise never venture. Tiny towns on dead end highways, with names like Weippe and Rosebud. Into the chaos of city traffic in Minneapolis and Seattle. Through endless miles of high desert to Winnemucca, and crawling up the side of Hell’s Canyon to Asotin.

There’s something about a rodeo. Bucking bulls and horses drowsing in the midday sun, tails twitching at the occasional fly. Voices and laughter echoing through a maze of pickups and trailers in the contestant parking area. How’d you do at Homedale yesterday? Great ride at Fort Pierre last weekend. Did you draw a good one today? Yeah, I got on Thunderfoot at High River. Better have your hammer cocked, he’ll throw some moves at you.

The whistle of ropes as cowboys pull out their gear and warm up their arms. The jingle of tack and the slap of leather, punctuated by an occasional whinny. Damp earth and diesel smoke as the tractor rumbles around the arena, preparing the ground, and the first, tempting wafts of grilled beef from the concession stand. And underneath it all, a slow-building tension.

Almost time…

There’s something about a rodeo. Old men in battered, sweat-stained cowboy hats and pearl snap shirts, clustered together in the stands to relive the good times, shaking their heads at how fast these boys are nowadays. Babies in strollers, and their older siblings scampering around in boots and spurs, swinging kid-sized ropes and dreaming dreams as big as the world.

Bucking horses peering out through chute gates, bareback riders standing over them with hats pressed to hearts as the Star-Spangled Banner streams behind a galloping horse and the notes of the national anthem soar into a blue summer sky. Heads bowed as the announcer’s solemn baritone recites the Cowboy’s Prayer.

We ask, Lord, that you be with us in the arena of life…

There’s something about a rodeo. The simmer turning to a buzz as your moment creeps closer. Muscles tighten, lungs constrict. Relax. Breathe. The concerted effort to clear the clutter from your brain and be here, now, in this moment. This few seconds that are the culmination of all the hours of training and practice and travel. Hands that want to tremble from anticipation when you tighten cinches and test your loop. The creak of leather and the musky scent of horse sweat as you swing aboard. Reins that twitch in your hands, bottling up the equine nitro that churns beneath your saddle, eager for the instant of explosion.

Almost time…

Minutes drag, and then race, and then drag again. Relax. Breathe. Riding the wave of adrenaline to the razor-thin edge between ultimate effort and tipping over into a debilitating tangle of nerves. Focus. Clear. You’ve done this a thousand times. Shut down your mind, trust your body.

There’s something about a rodeo. That moment when it’s your name booming over the loudspeakers. You backing into the roping box, climbing down into the chute. A ton of muscle and adrenaline quivering beneath you, primed to launch. Ready, ready…

And then you nod your head.

There’s something about a rodeo. And I hope you’ll grab a copy of Reckless in Texas and come along for the pulse-pounding, heart-stopping ride.

Excerpt

Joe slid off his horse, face contorted with pain. He pressed his back against the nearest post and eased down, knees bent, hands clasped tight between his thighs, grinding out curses between clenched teeth. Violet dropped to a crouch between his feet, stomach churning at what she might find. Just a month earlier, she’d seen a team roper lose a thumb by catching it in his rope, and last year one of the tie-down ropers had crushed his wrist in a stray coil.

“Let me see.” She took hold of his forearms, trying to pull his hand out to where she could examine it.

“No.”

“Yes.” She slid her hands down to his wrists, not feeling any gross deformities or blood, but he still had his gloves on. “Is it your thumb?”

“Go. Away.”

“Stop being a baby.”

His right hand snapped up, whip-quick, and clamped on the back of her head, bringing them nose to nose, eye to eye. “It’s not my hand, Violet. It’s what’s underneath.”

“What’s—oh!”

Joe’s hand was cradling his crotch. That pop she’d heard? It was the knotted end of the rope whacking him where it counted. And her hand was right on top of his.

He bared his teeth. “Still wanna kiss it better?”

Mortification rolled over her, hot as molten lava. She tried to jerk away, but the force of Joe’s grip on her nape

tipped her off balance. She grabbed his shoulders and her not-inconsiderable weight knocked him sideways. They tumbled to the ground in a tangle of limbs. She scrambled to get her knees under her. One of them made contact with something solid. Joe yelped, twisting hard and fast, flipping Violet onto her back. She arched, bracing to fight him off.

“Stop!”

Violet froze.

Joe was sprawled on top of her, his body rigid. Air hissed in and out between his teeth and sweat beaded on his forehead. “Just…don’t…move,” he panted. “Honest to God, you knee me in the thigh again, I’m gonna puke right down the front of your shirt.”

Violet held her breath. If possible, she would’ve willed her heart to stop beating, in case the thud, thud, thud disturbed his stomach. Motherhood had done nothing to disable her very active gag reflex. As her head cleared, she sorted out what was where. Joe was draped over her, chest to chest, her kneecap flush against the inside of the thigh Dirt Eater had nailed. She carefully rotated her leg, removing the pressure.

“Thank you,” Joe breathed. “Just give me a minute to catch my air and I’ll get off of you.”

Her hands were still clamped on his shoulders, but she couldn’t find anyplace else to put them. The longer she stayed put, the more aware she became of all the hard, lovely muscle under his T-shirt. If it were Beni, she could rub his back to make him feel better. She imagined sliding her palm down the sleek curve of Joe’s spine. Imagined his reaction. Yeah. He would definitely misinterpret the gesture. Much like her body was beginning to misinterpret their current position, the lean length of him hot against her, his cheek pressed to her collarbone, his face buried in the curve of her neck. Each short puff of air was a hot stroke on her skin.

“You sound like you’re in labor,” she said.

He huffed a laugh that tickled her ear. “If having a kid hurts as bad as gettin’ whacked on the pecker with a nylon rope, I need to buy my mother flowers.”

“More like a new car,” Violet said drily. “And I thought it was your thigh.”

“It’s both now, thanks to you.”

“I was trying to help.”

“Uh-huh. I’m guessing this is why you’re a pickup man and not a paramedic.”

Degree by degree, the tension eased from his body, even as Violet wound up like a spring. Need coiled hot and low, and the urge to wiggle against him was almost intolerable.

“Up until then you were doing pretty good,” she said, by way of casual conversation. “I’ll have to tell Beni you can handle stock okay.”

“Gee, thanks.” She could hear the eye roll in his voice. He blew out a long, slow breath—then nuzzled his face into her hair and inhaled deeply. “You even smell good when you’ve been rolling in the dirt.”

She jerked her head away. “Do you always go around sniffing women like a damn stud horse?”

“Nah. If I were a stud horse, I’d do this.” He gave her a quick, light nip at the curve of her neck that electrified every nerve ending and shot a blue-white current straight to where his thigh was pressed between her legs.

She shoved at his shoulder. “Stop that!”

“Just wanted to see if you tasted good, too.” He pushed up onto his elbows, groaned, and eased sideways, an excruciating slide of body against body before he rolled clear and flopped onto his back, legs splayed. He lifted one hand in warning. “Stay back. I’ll be fine as long as you don’t help me anymore.”

No problem. Violet couldn’t move, paralyzed for a few breaths by the sudden, aching absence of his weight. Then she scrambled to her feet, slapping the dust from her butt and legs. “Take all the time you want, tough guy.”

His head snapped up. “You tackled me when I was already down.”

“I thought you were actually hurt.” She flipped a casual hand at him. “No, don’t get up. Katie and I can handle it.”

He made a noise like a pissed-off rattlesnake. She shook the dirt out of her hair, tugged her cap down low, and went to deal with the bulls before she lost her head and tackled him again.

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I enjoyed Reckless in Texas way more than I expected to and I’ll definitely be checking out the other books from Kari Lynn Dell.

What I really liked, surprisingly, was how much info and fact was in the book around the workings of the rodeo, bullfighting and a horse farm. All of that pulled me into the story as much as the characters did!

Both Violet and Joe were good, likable characters. They both have some issues that they are working to resolve and neither is looking for or expecting what they found with the other. To begin with they were combustable, but not in a ‘lets get it on’ way – they had an obvious attraction but when they were anywhere near each other they generally rubbed each other up the wrong way more often than not and sparks went flying! Finally they started being honest with themselves and opened up to what was in front of them.
There was some confusion, a bit of a lack of communication and a ‘will they ever get it together’ moment that all contributed to a story that kept me engaged and hoping for everything to work out for the two of them!

A cocky, infamous fun friend, a cute wee boy, an ex (who at points seemed keen on losing the ex status), close family and friends all rounded out a supporting cast that added up to a really great read! I’m looking forward to the next book in the Texas Rodeo series and finding out how things go for Delon.

I rate Reckless in Texas 4.5*

Excerpt

It was no joke.

Liam had been waiting in the lobby for her at nine o’clock, sharp. Liam Edenhoff – “but everyone calls me Eden” – he’d introduced himself again to her before guiding her out to a taxi he’d had waiting.

She felt a little nauseous. She’d chugged down another half bottle of wine, and some crème de menthe, before heading downstairs to meet him. She’d almost talked herself out of going, but she’d made the mistake of telling her roommate Tori about the whole fiasco. Apparently, Katya owed it to women everywhere (and Tori in particular) to explore this opportunity to its fullest. She’d all but been shoved out the apartment, the door slammed and locked in her face.

“Nervous?” Liam Eden-whatever-his-name-was asked her as the cab slowed to a crawl.

“Nope,” Katya’s voice sounded overly loud.

“Liar. Tonight is gonna be an interesting night, angel cake.”

“Stop calling me that.”

“What’s your last name?”

“None of your business.”

“Okay then – when the gang bang starts, I’ll tell them to call you Katya X.”

She couldn’t stop the blush from happening that time. Liam burst out laughing, then soothed the sting by grabbing her hand.

Even when they got out of the cab, he didn’t let go of her. Normally, she would’ve been uncomfortable with a stranger assuming such a familiarity with her, but this time, she was thankful for it. She held onto him tightly as they walked down a crowded street. Then they turned into an alley, and his gang bang joke didn’t seem so funny. He led her to a plain door, above which a simple, small, neon sign spelled out “The Garden”. Outside were several small groups of people, chatting and smoking. Some of them called out greetings to him, all of them using his nickname, but a large and scary looking bouncer addressed him very properly.

“Hey, Mr. Edenhoff, wasn’t expecting you in tonight. Any problems?”

“Nope, just bringing a friend to show her the place, let her see what I do for a living.”

All the blood was quickly rushing from Katya’s limbs, pooling somewhere in her stomach. None of this was a joke. He really did own the place, that much was obvious.

As Liam led her through the door, though, Katya actually felt a surge of confidence. She was still nervous, still more than a little scared, but she was okay with it. Liam seemed like a nice guy, he wasn’t going to take her into some dark room and insert foreign objects into her orifices. She could leave whenever she wanted to, whenever it got too uncomfortable. Everything was fine, and for once, she was doing something exciting. She’d even have something interesting to talk about at work the next day.

Finally.

BLP REVIEW ~ Rebecca

HOLY FUCK.

That is all.
Speechless.
Except for the word Fuck. Which is on repeat in my head. Hot, unexpected, different, totally addictive, read in one sitting Holy Fuck of a book!

I don’t even know where to start.

#TeamLiam

#TeamWulfy

#TeamKatya

#TeamTacos

#Team69

I have no clue whose team I’m on, well no, the last 2 are confirmed but the first 3 are up in the air on a cliff-hanger extraordinaire!

Stylo Fantome’s blown my mind. Again.

Degradation (The Kane Trilogy #1)

I haven’t read in a long, long time a book that I so loved and hated simultaneously, as fascinated as I was horrified. A train wreck of a relationship, as beautiful as it is broken, brutally raw, poignant, passionate, tragic and destructive. If the Devil had a fucked up contemporary fairy tale it would be this and the ride has only just begun…

Completion (The Kane Trilogy #3.5)

“Stylo Fantome … without doubt one of THE discoveries of 2014 …  Hide yourself with a stiff drink and come meet Jameson and Tate, let Ms Fantome take you away for a few hours of sheer unadulterated bliss, the odd orgasm or two and make you remember why you read, why imagination is such a powerful and fabulous tool.”

My Time in the Affair

“Stylo Fantome’s talent is huge, her writing is flawless, emotional, thoughtful, sexy and deliciously hot. One click this now, in a sea of mediocrity her star shines brightly,”

Best Laid Plans (The Mercenaries #1)

Living in the frozen depths of Alaska is a still (God knows how) relatively unknown gem who goes by the name Stylo Fantome. As we now hit her sixth published book it is becoming more than clear that she is a talent who is here to stay, her flair and imagination, the complexity and emotional depth of her characters and stories combined with her ability to surprise with choice of genre or subject matter and yet still deliver every single time make her a one click automatic choice with no cover, blurb or info needed – just the author name alone.

When I look back at some of my reviews for her previous books I realise I should not be surprised at the quality of this one because her ability to write engaging, flawless stories across totally different genres is exceptional and consistent. Creativity like this does not come along often, with every single book her talent and growth as a writer shines through. I do worry about a mind that produced The Bad Ones, that was way too dark and fucked up for me even while I could appreciate the storytelling, so I’m very happy that Neighbors is a lighter read. Make no mistake though, it is not a fluffy light, it’s fast paced, surprising, intricate (without appearing to be), hot as fuck, sexy, all about the choices we make, the games people play, and the consequences good and bad of stepping outside our comfort zone.

I’m not going to put much in this review about the characters, the story and the dynamics involved because if you’ve read the blurb you know it gives very little away and that’s the way to go into this book; don’t read too many that give lots of spoilers or tell you the damn story before you get chance to experience this crazy, wild, intense, beyond fucking hot story.
Grab your drink of choice, turn your phone off and disappear into these pages to decide which team you are on, to scream at the kindle when the cliff-hanger ending comes unexpectedly fast because you were so invested in the characters and storyline that time ceased to exist. All three of the main players will fascinate you for different reasons. As always, nothing about any of the relationships is conventional as society sees it. Complex, frustrating at times yet addictive, guilty pleasures abound and it is absolutely flawless, a class of its own.

So as I said grab your drink, prepare snack of choice (tacos will work!!), turn off the phone, get new batteries and toy of choice (trust me the first sex scene, FUCK ME!) and get comfortable with Neighbors.

If it’s your first Stylo Fantome then pop your cherry in style. If you’ve read her previous work then settle in and prepare to be surprised. Either way, enjoy the shining light that is Ms Stylo Fantome and the absofuckinlutely fabulous Neighbors.

About the Author:stylo

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since … forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I’m clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there’s your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can’t understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

Sheriff’s Deputy Hayden Yates has worked hard to gain the respect and admiration of her fellow law enforcement officers. She’s succeeded so well, in fact, that she’s become just one of the guys. As her friends slowly begin to meet their soul mates, Hayden longs to be seen as a desirable woman, and not the tomboy she’s always been.

No slouch when it comes to attracting the opposite sex, cowboy Boone Hatcher might want to give it a rest for a while, especially after his last girlfriend accuses him of domestic abuse. Deputy Yates sees right through his ex’s ruse—and Boone sees right through Deputy Yates. Hayden might seem all business, but her need for justice comes from a heart that beats with pure passion.

A few dates turn into something more, and as the couple’s relationship deepens, so do the threats from his ex. It’s up to Hayden to convince Boone the danger is real…before jealous antics escalate to deadly obsession.

** Justice for Boone is the 6th book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Domestic abuse from a male POV is definitely something worth writing about to highlight the issue and I really liked the premise of the book. .

I liked Boone and when they got together they were hot! Unfortunately I found myself putting my kindle down more often than I usually would; I couldn’t really connect with Hayden and at times found the writing a little stilted.

I’m sure fans of the Badge of Honor series will love Justice for Boone but it just wasn’t for me and sadly it’s only a 3*……
