BLP REVIEW – Tracy

TOPPED was a good, fun read that got me out of a bit of a reading dip…. it made a change from some of the heavier, angsty reads I’ve had of late.

I must admit that when the story started I wasn’t sure that I was gonna like either of the main characters. Miranda (Randi Rose) was a bit, hmm, how would you say, too much? Not quite sure how I felt about her initially to be honest.
Joe (Charlie Shivers) I found a bit too laddish and the whole ‘Bro’ thing with his friends bugged me, felt it was a bit young and daft… BUT… as the book went on and this pair got together they kinda grew on me.
Their dislike of each other and their behaviour with the reviews and ratings verged on childish to a degree but to be honest, it wasn’t totally unbelievable (I’m sure you’ll get what I mean once you’ve read the book!)

The heat and attraction, even when they were trying their damndest to ignore their feelings and emotions, was scorching. Hate sex in particular definitely suited them.
Their snark and verbal sparring was amusing. I loved the dual POV – I do like knowing what a leading man is thinking – their internal musings on each other were funny and quite telling of their real feelings. How quickly they fell for each other was a little on the OTT side – but then, they do say that when it comes to strong emotions, love is akin to hate….

The backdrop of the author event and the assorted characters that made up the supporting cast were many and varied and I did wonder a few times how ‘real’ some of these people were!! 😉 lol!!

If you’re looking for a fun, quirky, shortish story grab a copy of Topped, it’s worth a read!!

I rate the book 4 *!!!

I don’t understand why this girl has this effect on me, but she does. I arrive home late this evening from our three-week sprint on the road, and after a hot shower, the only thing I want is my bed. As soon as I lay my head down, I hear her.

Charlee.

She’s weeping across the hall again. The sound of her dry, tearless cries rips me to shreds. Climbing from the bed, I tap on her door and then let myself in.

“Charlee?”

She doesn’t answer, even though I know she’s awake. I think she is hoping I’ll just go away, but I’m not like the other people in her life. I can’t sit back and watch her hurt and not do something to help her.

“I know you’re awake, Char. I can hear you across the hall.”

“What do you want, Lucas?”

“What’s wrong, Charlee? Why are you crying?”

“I’m not crying. Just go away and leave me alone.”

“No. No, I won’t just go away. Someone needs to be here. Someone needs to stay by your side and be there when you’re hurting, and since you feel like being a brat to everyone who tries to help you, I guess that means you’re stuck with me.”

“Why do you care, Lucas? Why?” she screams at me.

“What does that matter? Just know that I do, and I’m not going anywhere. Period. So get used to it, buttercup.”

I can physically see the fight leave her body. Her shoulders slump forward, and she releases a shaky breath before collapsing back on her bed. I don’t want to be intrusive, but I also meant what I said, and I refuse to leave her alone to deal with whatever is bothering her.

“Why doesn’t he want her? How can someone not love her?” I don’t have to ask who she is talking about. I already know, and it’s the same question I’ve been asking myself for a while now.

“I have no clue, but I will tell you this. Something is most definitely wrong with him, not her. She is perfect in every way.”

“You’re not just a little biased, are you?”

“Who, me? No. Not at all. Look at her. One look, that’s all it takes to know that he’s a dumbass. Anyone who would willingly not spend every second of his day with her is an idiot.”

“Thank you.”

“I’m serious, Charlee. Speaking of spending time together, let me take you guys somewhere tomorrow. A date. All three of us.”

“You want to go on a date with me and my infant daughter?”

“She is a part of your life now. Any man who wants to date you is going to have to accept that the two of you are a package deal. So yes, I want to take you both somewhere.”

“Okay.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“Thank you. And I mean it, Charlee. If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m right across the hall. Come get me. Talk to me. Please. Don’t do this to yourself anymore. You need to be in the best shape you can be for your daughter, and staying up half the night crying over scum isn’t the way to do that.”

“I will, Lucas. Thank you.”

They say moments of clarity hit you hard. Like suddenly a deep understanding smacks you in the face. Your vision becomes unclouded, and a truth that’s been out of your reach rushes at you. It’s in that second your perception of reality becomes so clear you can’t begin to describe it.

Some call it beautiful, some say it can be saddening, some even compare it to the moment your drug of choice washes over you, offering a moment of escape.

I wish I could I say my moment of clarity is an epiphany or some kind of life-defining moment that showed me where my messed-up life is going.

No, my moment hits me as the first wave of the orgasm I’ve been chasing the last few minutes washes over me.

Apartment nine.

And a self-appointed sex sabbatical.

It all started when I moved into my new apartment. At first, I was excited, ready for a fresh start. After a messy break-up, which included dealing with a douche ex who didn’t know how to keep his dick in his pants, I needed a new place. Somewhere closer to town this time, secure, and most importantly, affordable. However, finding a place close to the city, which was secure enough to make me feel safe and would still leave me enough money left over from my program director’s wage, proved to be a feat. After searching for five weeks, I was about to give up, accept defeat and move in with my mom and dad again. I mean it wasn’t the worst thing that could happen to a single thirty-year-old woman.

Luckily for me, I didn’t have to resort to such desperate measures when this place came up two weeks ago. After a quick walk through, I fell in love with the two bedrooms, one bath, and open kitchen living area. I filled out the paperwork, paid my deposit, a month’s rent in advance, and moved in five days later.

Everything seemed perfect.

That was until I realized how paper-thin the walls were between apartments.

It started out subtle, a sneeze in the early evening on my first night here as I settled into bed. A soft murmur of a man’s voice the third night.

But then came the sex.

The hot, wild, filthy sex.

The fourth night in my new apartment, I was woken to the low moans of what I assumed to be a needy woman.

The rain slows.

Rachel presses her hands against his chest and distances herself. Her eyes devour the answered prayer standing in front of her.

In a deep, sultry voice, she explains, “I think I knew the moment I saw you sitting high in your saddle. When you tipped your hat I truly lost my breath. Then when you stared into my eyes I melted. The first time you physically touched me I lost a part of my heart and prayed you captured it.”

Tears fill Brooks’ eyes. “But when you kissed me at the Cowboys game I gave you my heart. I think I knew then I was in love with you, but mentally it seemed too soon, too fast, it had to be lust I told myself. And the more time we spent together I knew it was lust—” Brooks’ forehead wrinkles.

Rachel’s hands slip underneath the front of his shirt wrapping securely around his waist. Her eyes worship his as she continues, “But more importantly I knew I was in love with you, too. Madly, passionately, crazily in love with you, Brooks Reynolds.” Brooks’ fingers thread through the hair on each side of her head.

Tightly he holds her. She continues, “I. Love. You. Brooks.” His lips crush hers. Their tongues attack every area inside their heated mouths. His tongue flickers across her neck. Her teeth nibble his earlobe. Brooks sweeps her lithe frame into his strong arms. Carrying her into the house and to her bathroom, Rachel trembles as the chill and the excitement overwhelm her senses.

EXCERPT

Sunlight reflected off of Derek’s silver cigarette case, as he retrieved it from his shirt pocket, causing Emerald to turn away when it flashed on her eyes. Taking a cigarette from the case, he tapped it on the lid and flipped open his lighter. Emerald watched him place the cigarette between his lips and suck as the flame heated the cigarette to life and smoke blew out of his nostrils. It was a disgusting habit, but somehow Derek made it look sexy as hell. She could almost taste the bitter tang of smoke from his breath as she licked her lips, a tinge of excitement causing a delicious lightness in her chest. She held back the urge to giggle, he’d only judge her with something scandalous. How would she explain getting turned on by a man lighting a cigarette?

Jennifer Rose lives the glamorous life in Canada working as a part-time office clerk/manager. A mother of three grown boys, she decided to give up cleaning, cooking and day to day household chores in favor of sitting with a favorite beverage, be it coffee or wine and her trusty laptop, after a friend and author convinced her that she had what it took to write romance novels, so she took a creative writing course and finally started writing.
