RELEASE DAY BLITZ ~ SKETCH by Laramie Briscoe

My name is Devin, but everybody calls me Sketch. I opened my own tattoo shop two years ago, and I’ve finally gotten to the point where I’m going to be able to give my wife everything she’s ever wanted. I’m going to be able to take time off and spend a day a week with her. In fact, tonight, I stopped and grabbed some wine, got her flowers, and those chocolates she likes.

What I wasn’t prepared for was to be met at the front door by her carrying her sh*t out.

She loves me, but she’s not in love with me anymore. What kind of bulls*it excuse is that? I’ve left her alone too often, I’ve been completely focused on one goal, and apparently she’s sick of waiting.

So here I stand. Half the man I was, p*ssed as f*ck, because while I was busy making a better life for us, she was under the impression I was leaving her lonely. I know one day she’ll see what I’ve been doing has been for us, and when that day comes… She can damn well come crawling back to me.

From Inked on Paper

Jake

One week later, Saturday night

By the time seven o’clock rolled around, I was going stir crazy. My total word count for the entire week was a big fat fucking zero. And like I’d assured Liz when I talked to her on Wednesday, I had tried. Really.

Okay, mostly.

After I’d spent two hours at the coffee shop that morning and managed to research everything from tattoos to tater tots—on my phone, because, fuck, what the hell else was I going to do?—I’d come back to my condo, changed, gone to the gym, watched the midday news, showered, and fought the urge to clean more shit around the house that had no business being cleaned. Not by me, at least.

Same shit I’d done almost every day this week. And last week, now that I thought about it.

Now that the sun was down and the night was coming to life, I needed to get out of the building. To do something productive that didn’t involve staring at a blank screen or a blank page and wondering whether or not I would ever be able to write anything again.

So, that was the plan.

A night out.

I had moved to downtown Austin for the scenery. I’d lived in the area most of my life— with the exception of the five years I’d spent in New York—having grown up twenty-something miles north in the city of Round Rock. The suburban life had worked well for my mom and stepdads (all nine of them)—still did—but I needed something a little more … lively. My sister, Paige, thought I was having a midlife crisis. At thirty-six, I seriously doubted that. I was reserving that for when I turned forty.

As I was riding the elevator down to the lobby, my cell phone rang. After digging it out of my pocket, I glanced at the screen and sighed.

Liz.

Great. It was eight o’clock in New York—on a Saturday, no less—where she lived and worked, so I knew this wasn’t going to be a hi, how are you? conversation. I answered anyway.

“Jacob Wild, where the hell are you?” Her raspy, take-no-shit tone made me smile.

“Elevator, why?” I asked, pretending I didn’t know what she meant.

“Where have you been?”

Before I got in the elevator? Well, if you have to know, I was walking down the hall.”

My editor growled. Actually growled. And it wasn’t one of those sexy purring things that some women did. This was an all-out Gremlin sort of sound that made me want to laugh. I refrained. Barely.

“You should be at your desk.”

“Why?” I stepped off the elevator into the lobby. “Nothing going on there at the moment.”

My comment was met with silence, and I could picture Liz standing in the middle of her Manhattan apartment, hand fisted in her short blonde hair as she stared at the phone in disbelief.

Truth was, I liked Liz. She was one of the top editors in the publishing industry, and she always played me straight. After I had self-published my first book and it had done surprisingly well, and after my agent had landed me my first seven-figure, three-book deal, I had been working with Liz directly. I’d liked her so much, and my books had done so well with her help that I’d even signed another contract, for another three books—with, get this, an eight-figure advance.

Which, I knew, was the reason she was calling.

That was a lot of money to invest in someone, and the first book was due to her in roughly thirty days, and she’d come to expect me to be ahead of the game, as I’d frequently turned in my first draft manuscript way early. It probably hadn’t helped that I’d asked for an extension this go-round—a three-month extension.

“Where’s my book?” she demanded. “I was looking forward to spending the weekend reading your stuff, enjoying a bottle of wine, and now I have no choice but to go to that stupid gala.”

I barked a laugh. I couldn’t remember what it was she was doing, but I recalled her mentioning it had something to do with her husband’s public relations firm. From what Liz told me, she did not enjoy getting dressed up and going out. But I’d known her long enough that I recognized the lie for what it was. She did enjoy it; she simply didn’t want anyone to know she did.

“I’ve still got a month,” I told her as I stepped out of the building, the cold wind slamming into me.

There was a brief pause before she said, “Tell me when I can schedule an interview. Your fans want to know what the hell happened to you.”

“You know I don’t do interviews,” I told her. That had been a point of contention between us from the beginning. I’d been called reclusive and mysterious, but the truth was, I didn’t like being in the public eye. I just wanted to write.

“You’re going to have to give in sometime,” she said. “Seriously. The media fucking loves you. They want to see your face.”

“Liz, shouldn’t you be getting ready for your thing?” I asked, purposely changing the subject.

Liz huffed. “What’s the book about? At least tell me that much.”

I should’ve known she wouldn’t let it go. I sighed. “I will, just as soon as I know.”

More silence before she said, “Jacob.” Her tone was admonishing and I understood her pain.

“I’m looking for my muse,” I assured her.

“Your muse? What the hell are you talking about? We agreed—”

Before she could go off on a tangent—something Liz was really good at—I interrupted her. “Don’t worry. I haven’t let you down yet, have I?”

Another growl. This time I did laugh.

“Fine. But next time I call you, you better answer the damn phone.”

“I did answer the phone.” Just not the first twenty-two times she’d called since yesterday morning. “Talk to you later, Liz.”

BLOG TOUR ~ Too Hot To Handle by Susan Arden

A random hookup too hot to handle? Never say never.

In a grueling game of cat-n-mouse with her step-uncle, it’s Margo’s move.

On the run, she does a body slide right into the arms of a recently discharged Marine. Outside of a crazy fling, there is zero room in her life for men. Distractions are dangerous to her health.

From working a fence line and dealing with cattle, Rod McLemore is thrust back into the line of duty. And he promptly fails. He crosses the line in a no-brainer mission: go and get the girl. On no hands is he prepared for Margo or her smart-mouth, right hook, and cargo to hide.

Margo and Rod are as volatile as flint and gunpowder. Bordering on taboo, their raw attraction is a recipe for disaster. Especially when the stakes are raised.

Their stormy love affair forces them over the edge and out of their comfort zones as they wrangle in-laws, Mother Nature, and a slick conman. A regular trial by fire. But a battle worth fighting means taking a stand and they’ll do whatever it takes to stay together. Even if it means they have to lie, cheat, steal.
Or kill.

o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o

Margo Santero.
Riding in a rodeo with a pack of adrenaline-hyped cowboys isn’t what it was cracked up to be. On the run since my mom died, I found out the hard way everyone has a price. And trust is a commodity. This isn’t the lifestyle I want, but neither is the demented offer my step-uncle tosses my way. He ups the ante, threatening my horse, forcing me to bolt. One day I’ll fix Axel for good. For now, I’ve gotta a run.

Rod McLemore.
She stormed into my life. A beautiful hurricane with dark secrets, blinding curves, and a smart-mouth I should kiss into submission. She’s on the run and needs my help. Not that she listens. But if it’s the last thing I do, I’m going to make her mine. Even if it means I have to lie, cheat, deal with her horse from hell…
Or get out my M9. Won’t be the first time I’ve pulled the trigger.

STORM WARNING: This is a seismic erotic romance, detailing a barely-legal runaway and a dirty-talking McLemore. If a fiercely protective aka alpha-male cowboy lights your fire, then you’ve come to the right ranch.

EXCERPT ONE

“Princess,” Axel’s viper voice whispered behind me, and I swung around as pinpricks of fear tattooed my skin.
With his slicked-back hair perfectly in place, he strolled out of the shadows, wearing a sneer. He lifted his hands encased in black leather gloves and shoved me back against the wall.
I clenched my jaw. No one was around and under his glare I fought to control my breathing. “Stop touching me,” I said hoarsely.
“Or what?” He cocked his head to the side and traced my cheek with a playing card.
“How about this?” Lurching forward, I went to rake the smirk off his face, but he caught and wrested my wrist down.
Up against me, Axel jabbed the card into my cheek, but I refused to cry out in pain. His pale skin glistened from sweat as cruelty flashed in his flat dark eyes. “Do you need a reminder of who calls the shots?” He tried to kiss me, but I turned my face to the side in disgust.
“Get off me,” I growled.
He didn’t relent and I couldn’t move him. In his mid-forties but unlike most men his age who sat in an office, he spent time boxing in a gym. And not just to keep in shape. He enjoyed pulverizing his opponents in an aggressive steroid induced rage—his sick little secret.
“Princess, you’ve got one more race. If you fail to win the championship, then I’ll foreclose on your father’s farm. Is that what you really want?” Axel dropped my wrist and the card abruptly. His hands moved to my neck as I stared, horror-struck by his latest threat. “Answer me, Margo.”
The pressure of his fingers increased around my neck, making it hard to breathe.
“No.” One word and it was all I could get out.
“Nate’s misfortune could disappear. I’ll cancel his debt—tonight. Set you up in an apartment. Ever been to Chicago?”
I knew what Axel desired. My defeat. My submission. He wanted to break me. Other riders and even arena workers had made the mistake of thinking his hot rods, hotel rooms, and shitty promises meant something. That something translated to agony revisited for days on end where girls wound up in the hospital with serious injuries like broken jaws or fractured ribs, or worse. They went missing. And no one talked or made a stink.
“Where are the clowns?” A handler yelled and Apollo nickered.
“Uh-oh,” I said, “Someone’s looking for you.”
Axel stared back at me. Or really at my chest. Leaning closer, he cursed and his hands started to shake as he held my head against the stable wall. “I can do anything I want to you. Right here and that old man you hang out with won’t raise a hand to help you. He’d watch, princess. You have no idea who you’re mouthing off to, but you’re going to find out. That horse of yours is a beauty. Same as you. But he can’t suck my cock can he?”
“You’re sick.”
“Say that now.” Releasing me, Axel laughed darkly. “But I’ll have you down on your knees the next time we meet if you don’t get your tits in line.”
“Stop threatening me.” I crossed my arms over my chest to escape his sickening leer.

“Then don’t disappoint me. I’d hate for Apollo’s leg to get busted. As insurance…”

EXCERPT TWO

Featuring Rod and his brother Cade. They’re two of three triplets. And Mia and Margo Santero, sisters.

We entered and didn’t make it past the foyer before Mia’s voice rang out as she rushed over. “Margo! Oh my God I can’t believe my eyes. Sis, you’ve grown up. Look at you.” Mia went from smiling to crying to laughing as they hugged. She noticed me and grinned. “Rod, I owe you. Thanks so much.”
“No problem. Glad to help.” I chuckled, my gaze flicking between them. My voice sounded as constrained as my locked-down desire to trace my fingers over Margo’s skin. Her smile tightened same as her shoulders, which she held fixed. Our eyes met, and I nodded, cocking my head toward her sister who had begun making introductions to family nearby.
Margo rolled her eyes at me and mouthed ‘help’ before she was shuttled away. Mia introduced her to everyone and I walked over to the bar in need of a stiff shot.
My brother appeared out of nowhere, sporting shoulder-length dreadlocks. “Heard you were called back into active duty,” Cade snorted.
After my double take over his hair, I frowned, narrowing my eyes. “Not exactly.”
“What are you up to tonight?” he questioned me, leaning against the bar and pulling the tab on a light beer.
“Are you really going to drink that? It tastes like piss.”
“I’m on contract as a body double. It’s my ass and abs on screen. It’s this or water. Back to you, got any plans around midnight?” He tipped the can to his lips, waiting on my reply.
“Look around.” I lifted my gaze to his. “We’re here.”
“Nuh. I mean later. I’ve got company. Two chicks. Here’s a preview.” He flashed his cell screen in my direction, displaying two naked women kissing and riding a double-headed dildo.
Shit. I pushed his hand out of my face. “Cade, there’s a thing called discretion. Ever heard of it?”
He laughed. “Not where these two girls are concerned.”

EXCERPT

Dinner was going great. We talked about future plans and vacations my parents want to take now that Dad is semi-retired. That all changed when dessert was being served, and Kegan got that look in his eye.

“So, KayKay? You told mom about the woman you have living with you yet?” Kegan says like it’s just another piece of everyday news to discuss at the table.

From the corner of my eye, I see both of my parents’ heads snap up and look at me. Center of attention, a position Kegan has always been better at than me. This is his payback for not spilling it about London when he asked. My mind is already thinking of things to do to get back at him; that’s if I don’t strangle him first.

I narrow my eyes at him before speaking. “I do have a house guest,” I respond with as much nonchalance as I can muster.

“Houseguest,” Kegan huffs.

“She’s in the guest room,” I reply and look at my mother. My explanation does nothing to keep the happiness off of her face. Seems I’m as transparent to her as I am to Kegan, and she didn’t show up at the house like he did and see her braless in a tank top and yoga pants.

“And where do you sleep?” Kegan says just before popping an overly large bite of pie into his mouth.

My jaw clenches uncontrollably, and my left eye ticks periodically with my pulse. Fucker.

“How did you meet?” My Aunt Diana asks thinking she’s saving me from Kegan’s questions when she’s actually only making it worse.

Kegan drops his fork on his plate loudly and sits backs far in his chair. “Oh, I love this part of the story.”

Excerpt

She took a deep breath. When that didn’t work to calm her nerves, she took a sip of the amber liquid. There was no burn. It was smooth and sweet on her tongue.

“Did you see anyone at the scene? Any other vehicles?” she asked.

“No. I drove up and saw the churned up mud and broken light covers where you hit the guardrail. If it hadn’t been for that—.” He stopped to take a sip of his own whiskey. When he continued, his voice was deeper, gruffer. “You drive too fast, Mia. You always have. You hit that curve like a bat out of hell. If I hadn’t come along, hadn’t realized you’d been on that road right in front of me, you would have died there.”

Her blood ran cold. He said it so matter of factly. It was true. She knew that. But it didn’t change the fact that she hadn’t been alone on that road, and her car hadn’t gone into the creek without someone else forcing her over the edge. “I do drive too fast… but I only swerved and lost control because of the other car, Bennett!”

“I know,” he said softly.

“It was a big black SUV… I’m not really sure what kind. With all those bars on the front of it,” she continued on, not quite processing that he’d agreed with her.

“The deer guard.” The words were supplied in an even tone, no censure, not disbelief.

“Yes,” she replied adamantly. “I rounded the bend and it was parked in a way that it blocked both lanes!”

“I believe you,” he said. “You don’t have to convince me that it happened that way.”

She stopped then, drew a deep breath and stared at him in stunned disbelief. “You believe me?”

“Yes. I saw the glass and plastic where your headlights got busted in… Directly in line with where your back wheels went over the edge. It’s not possible for you to have simultaneously damaged the front and back end of your car in a single car accident before the rollover.”

“It was deliberate,” she said softly.

“Maybe they just panicked,” he offered.

“I need another drink,” she said.

Bennett refilled her glass.

“Someone tried to kill me, Bennett,” she stated it emphatically. “I’m not imagining that… they waited for me on that road!”

“Why would someone do that, Mia? No one has any reason to hate you that badly,” he shot back before draining his glass.

“You do,” she finished quietly.

His eyes widened for a second in surprise, before narrowing in anger. “You come into my fucking house and accuse me of something like that?”

She shook her head. “No. I wasn’t accusing you… I know you’d never do anything like that. But it’s true, Bennett… you do have every reason to hate me.”

He settled back against the counter, arms crossed over his chest, muscles rippling and bunching beneath the open plaid shirt. “I don’t hate you, Mia… I’ve tried to. I’ve tried to every damn day of my life, and I just can’t.”

She set her glass on the counter. Her hand was trembling too much to hold on to it. “Do you need to hate me, Bennett? Clearly whatever was between us hasn’t kept you from having a very active love life!”

He leaned his head back against the cabinet door and stared up at the ceiling as if praying for strength, or possibly patience. “That’s not how it works. I wasn’t the one who stood you up.”

She glanced beyond the kitchen and into the living room, where new and decidedly feminine curtains hung over the window behind the couch. “It looks like you’ve managed okay… You and Lacey.”

His eyebrow shot up. “You really wanna go there? We’ve not been together for ten years! Should I have waited, Mia?”

“No,” she said quickly. “And I didn’t mean it like that, Bennett! … Yes, I did, but I know I don’t have the right. I’m jealous and not just because you’re with someone else, but because…You’ve made a life for yourself. And… I’m still doing the same thing I was at eighteen. Taking care of Mama, handling the distillery tours and—.” She stopped speaking abruptly, the unfinished words hanging between them.

The silence was heavy, laden with the anticipation of what went unsaid between them, the tension building until it was unbearable. It was Bennett who finally snapped. “And what, Mia? For the love of God, just say it!”

“And thinking about you. All the time,” she replied. “At this point, I should be nothing more than a distant memory to you, and you’re on my mind all the time.”

He smiled, but there was no humor in it. It was a bitter and self-deprecating twist of his beautiful mouth. “Not so distant. I see you in town. I see your car speeding up and down this road. I hear your name whispered by every gossip in town as I walk past them… People in this town remember everything. They remember us. And so do I.”

She had memories of her own. His mouth on hers, his hands on her body. They’d been greedy then with the newness of it all, just a couple of inexperienced kids with more hormones than skill. Of course, Bennett was more experienced now, but more than that, the heat that burned between them then was still there. Dating wasn’t a part of her life. There was no time for it. With taking care of her mother and her job at the distillery, it was almost like time had stopped for her that summer. He’d gone on with his life, at least somewhat, and she was in the same rut she’d always been in.

The mistake she’d made in coming there was glaring. Panic hit her, sinking into her gut like a twisting knife. Seeing him, being close enough to him to smell him, to touch him, it was an epic error in judgement on her part. Nothing in this world could hurt her as much as the man in front of her. The first time had been bad enough. To go through it all again when the outcome couldn’t be any different was just more than she could contemplate. “I should go,” she managed. “Coming here was a mistake.”

She whirled and headed for the door and was halfway there when he caught her. One of his large hands snaked out and captured her undamaged wrist, closing over it and tugging her back to him. “You’re right. I know you’re right… and I don’t fucking care.”

With her chest close to his, her head just below his chin, his arms slid around her. It was like breathing, the most natural thing in the world. She leaned into him, savoring the heat, the hard press of him against her. “I cannot even count the number of ways in which this is a bad idea… There’s no way this ends well, Bennett.”

“Never say never,” he advised softly.

“Highly unlikely, then,” she amended.

“Lots of things are unlikely, oh wise one. Doesn’t mean they can’t happen.” His voice was little more than a deep murmur, his lips brushing against her forehead as he spoke. He held her gently, tenderly. It was something she’d missed so much it wasn’t even possible to put into words. Even then, the heat was there, arcing between them, taking on a life of its own.

“Like what?” she asked. Her skin burned beneath his hand like he’d set her on fire. With nothing more than a touch, it raged for him.

“You… standing here in my kitchen for starters.”

“I’m blaming my lapse in judgement on painkillers.” The statement was flippant, but the quavering of her voice and the slight hitch to her breathing told the truth. There was nothing casual about what was happening between them. It was life or death.

“Why is it a mistake?” he demanded as he pulled her a little closer to him.

All the reasons fled along with the fear. With the heat of his body against hers, his breath warm on her skin, she couldn’t pull them to mind anymore. She could see the fine sheen of sweat on his skin from where he’d been working. Her breath caught as she looked up. His eyes weren’t locked on hers. Instead, they were locked on her mouth. He looked at her lips as if he wanted to bite into her and in that moment, she would have let him.

“Mia,” he murmured. It was the last thing that was said between them. He descended upon her, his lips on hers as his hands slid upward to tangle in the fall of her hair.

It was a gentle kiss. She didn’t doubt for a moment that Bennett was aware of every injury and mindful not to hurt her. That was just who he was. But as his mouth moved over hers in a kiss that was achingly tender, her body burned for him. When he captured her bottom lip between his, she melted against him. His arms closed around her pulling her even closer, until she was firmly pressed against the hard wall of his chest. She could feel him everywhere.

Then his hands slid downward, cupping her behind, pressing their bodies even more tightly together. The blatant evidence of his desire was unmistakable and her body responded to it insistently. She wanted him. She wanted him with a desperation that she couldn’t even articulate.

The dog whined then, butting his large head between them and demanding to be given the lion’s share of the attention. Breathless, aching, desperate, and more than a little embarrassed that she’d fallen so easily into Bennett’s arms, Mia backed away from him.

“What are we doing, Bennett?” The question was anguished, reflecting the war that raged inside her between the desire to have what she wanted and the need to do what was best for everyone.

“We’re doing what we want for a change,” he replied. “I don’t know why you bailed on me that night. I may never know… but there’s one thing I’m sure of, Mia.”

“What’s that?”

“Whatever your reason for not showing up,” he said firmly. “It wasn’t because you don’t want me—because you don’t want us.”

Forcing herself to move away from him completely, Mia disentangled herself from his arms. She couldn’t think clearly when he touched her, obviously. “Wanting something doesn’t mean you should have it.”“That’s a fine rule for children… It doesn’t fly with me. I’m a grown man, and God knows you’re a grown woman. Nobody, Mia, and I mean nobody, ought to have a say in what happens between us except us.”

Excerpt #1:

He really hated bullies. Especially, assholes that bullied women.

Leaning on the bar, Austin Rose looked back over his shoulder, his grip tightening on the beer glass in his hand. The bully leaned down into the blonde beauty’s face, his hand slamming against the table with a resounding whack. She seemed unfazed by his aggression — her shoulders relaxed, her head at a patronizing tilt.

Her shaking leg gave her away.

She’d followed Austin into the San Diego airport lounge after he’d checked on Hope’s flight, learning he had an hour before his future sister-in-law arrived. The open bar was deserted except for the three of them and the bartender, who looked just as unfazed as the blonde wanted to appear. The early afternoon hour proved slow for the establishment, though with his plans, Austin found the early hour suited his spastic nerves well.

“I asked you a question.” The man spat his words, his arms braced on the square tabletop.

Straightening, Austin turned around on his barstool and tipped up the brim of his straw cowboy hat. Airline passengers walked to and from their gates beyond, the overhead announcements muffled from the buzz of hurried conversation. His brother, Jaydan, would’ve already been at her side. The D.I.R.E. super agent was a man’s man, someone that stood up for the underdog and faced any resistance with courage.
Austin wished he could say the same.

The woman stood to her full, leather-covered height, her heels and black pants making her legs appear a kilometer long. The man blocked her path, causing her to bend back over the table, her green-tipped curls falling to her waist.

“Get out of my face.” She pushed against the man’s chest, her black fingernails digging into his shirt.

Prologue

Most people celebrate their birthdays. Not me. I celebrate the anniversary of my death. That’s the date I did the one noble act of my shallow life: I died.

They say memories aren’t as accurate as one would think. But I clearly remember that day. It’s etched in my brain, encoded and stored in my mind, and promptly ready for retrieval.

I still remember the stench of melted plastic and burning wood. I can feel the warmth irradiating from the crumpled structure. I can perfectly picture the smoke curling up in the sky, resembling snakes rising upward under the influence of a snake charmer.

I approached a firefighter holding a metal clipboard. He was making notes and assessing the damages.

“Excuse me, what happened here?”

He glanced up from the clipboard. His brows furrowed, silently asking me if I was seriously asking him this question.

“A fire,” he finally responded with the impatient tone of someone stating the obvious.

“But… but what happened?” I scrunched up my face.

“Too early to determine. We do know, however, that the fire started in a stove. It appears it was some sort of explosion.”

“Did anyone get hurt?” My heart threatened to come out of my mouth. Were Mom and Luna okay?

“Two fatalities. A female and her teenage son,” he said, turning his back to me and resuming his notes.

Though sluggish, my mind processed the information. Mom. Female body. Her son. Mom was dead. I clenched my teeth to avoid the tears burning the back of my eyes from falling.

Subsequently, it hit me. They assumed the guy’s body to be me. Me. But why? A flash of Jerry placing my probation bracelet around his ankle crossed my mind. Of course. They assumed his body was mine.

That’s when I should have called the firefighter back. Informed him I was not dead. Asked if he’d seen my cousin Luna. But the words lodged in my throat and I couldn’t bring them out.

Petrified, I stared at the house for what could have been hours. It was destroyed. In its place were a charred skeleton and a pile of ashes.

When I finally snapped out of my stupor, I decided I had to find Luna. Explain everything. Tell her I was alive, that they had misidentified Jerry’s body as mine.

Altered voices caught my attention. I circled the house. That’s when I saw Caleb, my Cousin Luna’s boyfriend. The guy I was sure was the love of her life. He was arguing with an older man. Immediately, I recognized the man. He was Caleb’s dad. Also, he was the judge presiding over my drug-related case.

As I approached, I heard Caleb saying, “Nothing will keep me away from Luna now, Dad. Jake’s dead. You can’t use him to separate us anymore.”

I took a few steps back. Caleb’s dad was using my pending case to blackmail Caleb and separate him from Luna.

I fled without them noticing my presence. I went back to the blue bench at the beach where I had passed out from drinking. I sat there for hours, thinking. I realized, I was unconsciously destroying Luna’s shot at happiness.

But there was a way I could avoid further damaging her life. If I were dead, there would be no more blackmailing. Caleb and Luna could be together. Free from me. Free from my baggage of screwed-up decisions.

When night fell, I hitchhiked a ride and skipped town.

And I never saw my cousin Luna again…
