About LOVE RESTORED

In the first of a Montgomery Ink spin-off series from NYT Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan, a broken man uncovers the truth of what it means to take a second chance with the most unexpected woman…

Graham Gallagher has seen it all. And when tragedy struck, lost it all. He’s been the backbone of his brothers, the one they all rely on in their lives and business. And when it comes to falling in love and creating a life, he knows what it’s like to have it all and watch it crumble. He’s done with looking for another person to warm his bed, but apparently he didn’t learn his lesson because the new piercer at Montgomery Ink tempts him like no other.

Blake Brennen may have been born a trust fund baby, but she’s created a whole new life for herself in the world of ink, piercings, and freedom. Only the ties she’d thought she’d cut long ago aren’t as severed as she’d believed. When she finds Graham constantly in her path, she knows from first glance that he’s the wrong kind of guy for her. Except that Blake excels at making the wrong choice and Graham might be the ultimate temptation for the bad girl she’d thought long buried.

Read an excerpt of LOVE RESTORED:

When the game started, and the Avs took the ice, Graham kept his attention on the players rather than the very sexy woman beside him. His team needed his head to be in the game and not on Blake’s curves. And, yes, he might be a little superstitious, but whatever.

At the face off, Toronto took possession of the puck, and Blake let out a little cheer— not loud enough for others to hear, but just those on either side of her. Holy hell, had Austin sent a traitor into their midst? A freaking Toronto fan at a home game for the Avalanche? What the hell was that Montgomery thinking?

He growled at her as she quietly cheered the first Maple Leaf goal and met Derek’s eyes. Why the hell was the other man laughing? Couldn’t he see that Blake was cheering for the wrong team? She lived in freaking Denver for God’s sake, and considering that her family’s ancestral home was here, she had to be a native. And yet, she cheered for Toronto? It was as if she were trying to annoy him.

After the first period, he got up, his hands fisting at his sides. “I need another beer.”

Owen, who had been quiet the entire time since he was apparently answering emails on his phone, looked up. “Grab me a soda, will you? I need some caffeine, and since I’m driving us home, I’ll let you drink.” He winked toward Blake. “I think you’re going to need alcohol tonight.”

Graham grunted and stomped his way through the aisle and up the stairs so he could get a beer. Since everyone and their mother got up during intermission, he’d have to wait in line, but maybe that would help him cool off. He was just so freaking pissed that she would dare root for another team. And that made no sense. Why could she get under his skin so easily?

“Hey, Graham, wait up,” Derek said as he jogged up behind him.

“I don’t know what you did to piss Blake off, but I should probably let you know she’s rooting for Toronto just to needle you.”

Graham turned. “Excuse me?”

He must have looked like he wanted to rip someone’s arm off because a few people moved back in the line and Derek held up his hands. “She’s a diehard Avs fan. Even owns a signed Sakic jersey and keeps a spare she can wear during games. The signed one only comes out during the playoffs. It’s got to be killing her to root for the other team, and it must be because of you.”

That little witch. “How do you know it’s not because of you?” he asked, intrigued and pissed off all at the same time that she would do something like that.

“Because we’re friends, not close ones, but friends. This isn’t a date or anything, just to let you know. I think she’s single, but since my girlfriend up in Seattle would skin me if I even dared to look at Blake that way, I’m just fine as I am. Anyway, I thought you should know that she’s just trying to piss you off. Bro code and all that.”

Graham clenched his teeth. “Bro code.” He ordered his beer, Owen’s soda, and paid for Derek and Blake’s drinks since Derek had been so helpful.

“What are you going to do about Blake?” Derek asked as they made their way back to the entrance and showed their tickets.

“Don’t know yet.” And that was the problem. He never knew about anything where it came to this woman. She could intrigue him, turn him on, and piss him off all in the span of ten minutes. That had to be a record.

He handed Owen his drink and sat back down, studying Blake as he did so.

“What?” she asked, brows raised.

“Nothing,” he said softly. “Not yet anyway.”

She blinked and opened her mouth to say something, then froze as people started to chant, “Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!” around them.

Graham slowly looked up at the huge screen on top of the ice and cursed. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”

Blake laughed. “No way. No fucking way.”

“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”

He was pretty sure Owen was yelling the loudest, and Graham was going to have to kick his brother’s ass when this was over.

“Fuck it,” Graham growled and gripped the back of Blake’s head and crushed his mouth to hers. They both froze a moment as cheers erupted around them before he sank deeper into the kiss. He didn’t open his mouth, wouldn’t let his tongue touch hers, but the moment of lips against lips left him breathless.

He pulled back, his eyes wide, Blake’s even wider.

“What the hell was that?” Blake gasped, her cheeks slashed with red.

“I…” He cleared his throat. “Just watch the game. And you can cheer for your precious Avs. Don’t hurt yourself going for Toronto.”

He turned away from her and gulped half his beer down in one go.

He could feel Blake’s eyes on him before she turned away, and see her hands shaking out of the corner of his eye.

“Dude,” Owen whispered. “This is going to be fun.”

“Fuck you,” Graham growled and drank the last of his beer.

He didn’t know what had come over him, but that had to be the last of it. There was no way he was going to go there. If he were this unraveled and tense at the same time with just one kiss, with just one look, he wouldn’t make it if he had her in his arms. In his bed.

Blake wasn’t for him, and damn it, he didn’t want her to be.

The Kiss Cam could go straight to hell.

release blitz SBPRBANNER.jpg

“I’ve done far worse than what I went to prison for.

She has no idea how bad this can get.”

Kill Switch, an all-new standalone dark romantic suspense by Penelope Douglas is live!

Kill-Switch-EBOOK (1).jpg

WINTER

Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could’ve done. It didn’t matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I’d have time to disappear before he got out or he’d cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.

But I was wrong. Three years came and went too fast, and now he’s anything but calm. Prison only gave him time to plan.

And while I anticipated his vengeance, I didn’t expect this.

He doesn’t want to make me hurt. He wants to make everything hurt.

DAMON

First thing’s first. Get rid of her daddy. He told them I forced her. He told them his little girl was a victim, but I was a kid, too, and she wanted it just as much as I did.

Step two… Give her, her sister, and her mother nowhere to run and no fuel to escape. The Ashby women are alone now and desperate for a knight in shining armor.

But that’s not what’s coming.

No, it’s time I listened to my father and took control of my future. It’s time I showed them all—my family, her family, my friends—that I will never change and that I have no other ambition than to be the nightmare of their lives.

Starting with her.

She’ll be so scared, she won’t even be safe in her own head by the time I’m done with her. And the best part is I won’t have to break into her home to do it.

As the new man of the house I have all the keys.

Kill Switch is suitable for readers 18+. While it can be read as a stand-alone, all of the characters are developed throughout the series. The first two books, Corrupt and Hideaway, are now available through Kindle Unlimited!

EXCERPT:

Once he and Evan walked outside of the warehouse to join the others, Reid joined Naomi and stared down at her notes. “Any more advice for me?”

She shook her head and turned, caught unaware that they stood so close. She faltered when one of her heels wobbled, and Reid caught her.

They both froze, staring at the other. She wondered if he felt the heat between them and thanked God her blazer covered her now erect nipples. What was it about this man that put her every nerve on alert?

His gaze slipped to her mouth before finding her eyes again, and she found his light-gray stare unnerving. Talk about intense.

“You okay?” he asked, his voice like silk.

“F-fine. Sorry.” She went against every instinct she possessed and took a step back, disappointed he let her. “Thanks.”

“Yeah.” He continued to stare at her and tucked his hands in his pockets.

She refused to look down at his jeans, not wanting to know if he’d been as affected as she still was by that simple touch.

“Man, you are really pretty.”

She felt her cheeks heat. “Reid.”

“Just sayin’.” He smiled, and she wanted to fan herself. “So, any advice, Starr PR?”

“Just be yourself.” She smiled back, pleased when he seemed entranced. “Your interviewer is Rhonda Peters, and I’m sure she’ll be in love with you five seconds after meeting you.”

His grin turned cocky. “Oh?”

“Please. You’re attractive and you know it.” There, I got it off my chest. “Which is terrific when trying to sell something. You see a commercial with a gorgeous woman who barely looks at a pair of jeans slung over the corner of her bed. But you remember that commercial for jeans because she stuck in your mind.”

“Nah. If she’s not wearing them, I’m not interested. Wait. I am, but not in the jeans.” He laughed. “So, do you ever wear jeans?” He glanced at her suit. “I imagine you look great in anything.”

Before she let herself be drawn into flirtation, she mentally backed away. “Perfect. Use that with Rhonda, but be careful, or she’ll take you up on your offer.”

“Offer?” His gaze cooled.

“That bedroom voice, the seduction. It’s good, but you might want to throttle back how hard you push. Rhonda will be overwhelmed.”

“But not you.” He studied her. “What would it take to overwhelm you, Naomi?”

Hearing her name on those sexy lips threw her for a moment. Unfortunately, he noticed, because he gave her a sly smile.

“Me? Nothing. I never mix business with pleasure. Ever.” Not anymore.

“Huh. Then it’s a good thing you and I only have a three month contract, isn’t it?”

Wait. That hadn’t gone as planned. “What?”

Reid laughed. “I’m kidding, Naomi. I agree. Sex and business don’t go together. I’m just yanking your chain. You’re too easy.” He held up a hand. “To rile. Too easy to rile. Otherwise you’re a tough woman. Not meaning that in any way offensive, either. Having to work for something makes it more worth it, you know?”

She scowled. “I’m losing track of this conversation. What exactly do you mean?”

Reid lost his smile. “Heck if I know. Look, in the Marine Corps, fraternization is a no-no. You don’t make friends with your boss, and you aren’t supposed to sleep with him or her either. I get you. But Naomi, you’re not my employee.”

“You’re my client,” she said, working hard to mean what she said. “It’s unprofessional to get romantically involved with you.  I’m qualified for this job because I’m good at what I do, not because I’m pretty and can flirt a good game.”

He frowned. “Don’t think I ever said you weren’t qualified.”

She wanted to smack herself for going off on a tangent and blushed three shades of red. Her face hurt, it felt so hot. “God, ignore me. It’s been a long day. I’m sorry for digressing. I just meant we need to keep things professional, that’s all.”

Reid studied her for a moment then nodded. “Hey, I respect that.” His voice gentled. “I respect you, you know. Don’t worry. This will turn out just fine tonight.”

She nodded, about to apologize for turning his comments into a diatribe about unfair work practices when Rhonda’s team showed up.

Instead, she sighed. “Break a leg, Reid. And just remember, be yourself.”

Unfortunately, he did just that and had Rhonda and half her team fawning all over him. The team photographed well, and the TV crew seemed enchanted with the twins and Jordan. Finley had the lead cameraman laughing and the sound guy demanding another trick with Finley’s magical quarter.

Their outdoor shoot had also attracted several onlookers, and word spread that the heroic guys from that stopped-burglary earlier in the week were on TV again.

The interview couldn’t have gone better. The photographers loved working with everyone, and the large moving van advertised their contact number and name for everyone to see.

But Rhonda, damn her, was getting way too cozy with Reid. Which wasn’t Naomi’s problem.

Gah. What the hell is wrong with me? He’s not a boyfriend or potential boyfriend. He’s a client.

“Naomi, hey. How are you?”

She turned to see an old friend, one of the station managers at the television station. “Morgan, great to see you.”

She accepted a kiss on the cheek and gave him one in return.

A few years her senior, Morgan had dated her twice after her breakup from Tanner. Though he’d been a nice guy, there was no chemistry, and his kisses had been mediocre and rushed. Before anything went further, she’d broken it off, claiming too much on her plate to get serious.

Morgan had a terrific smile and a slender build. A nice guy. Maybe too nice. He grinned. “You get better looking every time I see you.”

“Flatterer.” She smiled. “So how have you been?”

They made small talk while she watched the Griffiths get their pictures taken and get interviewed. Cash put Reid in a headlock, which hadn’t been in the script. But everyone laughed as more photos were taken. And of course, Cash’s arms bulged while Reid slugged his brother in the gut where he could manage a punch.

The photoshoot turned into a huge party with everyone enjoying themselves, then transitioned to Ringo’s Bar down the street.

By that time, she’d agreed to meet Morgan there to talk some more. He claimed to have a lead on a business that needed her help, though his eyes told another story. But it made her feel better to put even more distance between herself and Reid, because she swore she could feel the man watching her with Morgan, even as she watched Rhonda not so casually wrap her hand around his arm.

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

It’s a case of ‘no questions asked’ when it comes to buying and reading a new release from Marie Harte – I’ll admit that Marie is, without doubt, one of my favourite authors.

The Whole Package is book one in the new Movin’ On (Veteran Movers) series and it was a really good read.

My only wee thing was that there was a lot going on in this first book. We are introduced to all of the veteran moving crew as well as following Reid and Naomi’s story but, in saying that, this is something that Ms Harte has done with other series and in the long run it works as we’ve kinda got a handle from the outset on the characters still to get their own book.

Reid is a great guy but he takes everything on himself and is so focused on the new business and looking out for his brother that he’s not got much of a life of his own.
Naomi is wholly focused on her own up and coming business and having been bitten in the past when it came to relationships, she’s not living much of a life either.
The attraction between this pair was almost instant although both were at first hesitant to act on any feelings they had. When they eventually give in it’s not supposed to be more than fun and definitely not long term…….

I really enjoyed The Whole Package and am definitely looking forward to Smooth Moves which is the second book in the series and Cash’s story!!

I’m giving this book 4.5*

Figures.

It was the gorgeous guy I’d seen in the elevator. And here I thought we’d had a little spark.

Bennett Fox grinned like he’d already been named my boss and extended his hand. “Welcome to Foster Burnett.”

Ugh. He wasn’t just good looking; he knew it, too.

“That would be Foster, Burnett and Wren, as of a few weeks ago, right?” I iced my subtle reminder that this was now our place of employment with a smile, suddenly thankful my parents had made me wear braces until I was nearly sixteen.

“Of course.” My new nemesis smiled just as brightly. Apparently his parents had sprung for orthodontic care, too.

Bennett Fox was also tall. I once read an article that said the average height of a man in the US was five-foot-nine-and-a-half inches; less than fifteen percent of men stood taller than six feet. Yet the average height of more than sixty-eight percent of Fortune 500 CEOs was over six feet. Subconsciously, we related size to power in more ways than just brawn.

Andrew was six foot two. I’d guess this guy was about the same.

Bennett pulled out the guest chair next to him. “Please, have a seat.”

Tall and with gentlemanly manners. I disliked him already.

During the ensuing twenty-minute pep talk given by Jonas Stern—in which he attempted to convince us we weren’t vying for the same position, but instead forging the way as leaders of the now-largest ad agency in the United States—I stole glances at Bennett Fox.

Shoes: definitely expensive. Conservative, oxford in style, but with a modern edge of topstitching. Ferragamo would be my guess. Big feet, too.

Suit: dark navy, tailored to fit his tall, broad frame. The kind of understated luxury that said he had money, but didn’t need to flaunt it to impress you.

He had one long leg casually crossed over the other knee, as if we were discussing the weather rather than being told everything we’d worked twelve hours a day, six days a week for was suddenly at risk of being in vain.

At one point, Jonas had said something we both agreed with, and we looked at each other, nodding. Given the opportunity for a closer inspection, my eyes roamed his handsome face. Strong jaw, daringly straight, perfect nose—the type of bone structure passed down from generation to generation that was better and more useful than any monetary inheritance. But his eyes were the showstopper: a deep, penetrating green that popped from his smooth, tanned skin. Those were currently staring right at me.

I looked away, returning my attention to Jonas. “So what happens at the end of the ninety-day integration period? Will there be two Creative Directors of West Coast Marketing?”

Jonas looked back and forth between us and sighed. “No. But no one is going to lose his or her job. I was just about to tell Bennett the news. Rob Gatts announced he’ll be retiring in a few months. So there will be a position opening up for a creative director to replace him.”

I had no idea what that meant. But apparently Bennett did.

“So one of us gets shipped off to Dallas to replace Rob in the southwest region?” he asked.

Jonas’s face told me Bennett wouldn’t be happy about the prospect of heading to Texas. “Yes.”

All three of us let that sink in for a moment. The possibility of having to relocate to Texas shifted my mind back into gear, though.

“Who will make the decision?” I asked. “Because obviously you’ve been working with Bennett…”

Jonas shook his head and waved off what I was beginning to question. “Decisions like this—where two senior management positions are being merged into one office—the board will oversee and make the final determination of who gets first pick.”

Bennett was just as confused as me. “The board members don’t work with us on a daily basis.”

“No, they don’t. So they’ve come up with a method of making their decision.”

“Which is?”

“It’ll be based on three major client pitches. You’ll both come up with campaigns on your own and present them. The clients will pick which they like best.”

Bennett looked rattled for the first time. His perfect composure and self-assuredness took a hit as he leaned forward and raked long fingers through his hair.

“You’ve got to be kidding me. More than ten years, and my job here comes down to a few pitches? I’ve landed half-a-billion dollars of ad accounts for this company.”

“I’m sorry, Bennett. I really am. But one of the conditions of the Wren merger was that due consideration be given to the Wren employees in positions that might be eliminated because of duplicity. The deal almost didn’t go through because Mrs. Wren was so insistent that she not sell her husband’s company, only to have the new organization strip away all of Wren’s hard-working employees.”

That made me smile. Mr. Wren was taking care of his employees even after he was gone.

“I’m up for the challenge.” I looked at Bennett, who was clearly pissed off. “May the best woman win.”

He scowled. “You mean man.”

we shouldn't sneak peek teaser

SYNOPSIS:

Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning.

I was late for the first day at my new job—a job I’d now have to compete for even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger.

While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons.

She’d ticketed a long line of cars—except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine.

Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine.Chances were, the owner would pay it and be none the wiser.

Except, I accidentally broke the windshield wiper while slipping the ticket onto the car’s window.

Seriously, my day couldn’t get any worse.

Things started to perk up when I ran into a gorgeous man in the elevator. We had one of those brief moments that only happened in movies.

You know the deal…your body lights up, fireworks go off, and the air around you crackles with electricity.

His heated stare left me flush when I stepped off the elevator.

Maybe things here wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Or so I thought.

Until I walked into my new boss’s office and met my competition.

The gorgeous man from the elevator was now my nemesis. His heated stare wasn’t because of any mutual attraction. It was because he’d saw me vandalize his car. And now he couldn’t wait to annihilate his rival.

There’s a fine line between love and hate—and we shouldn’t cross it.

We shouldn’t—but straddling that line could be so much fun.

RELEASE BLITZ ~ Crave (The Gibson Boys #3) by Adriana Locke

RELEASE BLITZ

Title: Crave

Series: The Gibson Boys #3

Author: Adriana Locke

Genre: Contemporary Romance

BLURB

Hadley Jacobs is over Machlan Gibson.

Sure, she’ll always be a little weak to the dimple in his right cheek and the way his five o’clock shadow makes him ruggedly handsome. But that’s not enough to cover every other thing about him because they all drive her nuts. Like how he’s won’t admit he’s wrong even when he knows it and how he drives his stupid car a million miles an hour on wet asphalt. As she rolls back into town and takes a seat at Crave, she won’t take the bait. She’s over him. Mostly.

Machlan isn’t over her.

It’s not because he hasn’t tried. He reminds himself over and over that she’s not the girl for him. After all, she drives him insane with her sassy attitude and the way she calls him out on everything. She beats him at poker, even though she doesn’t know the difference between a straight and a flush, and when she looks at him with her bright, blue eyes, it’s unnerving. When she climbs onto that bar stool and orders a drink, he puts it in front of her and ignores the sparkle in her eyes.  He’s not over her, but she won’t know that.

But she does know that. And he knows she’s not as over him as she’s pretending to be. When life forces their hand this time, there’s more on the line than a pile of poker chips. It’s their forever.

Crave is a standalone romance in a new small town, blue-collar series from USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke. Join readers everywhere as they fall in love with the delicious Gibson Boys.

Excerpts:

Snippet #1:

“What brought you back to town?” Peck asks. “Haven’t seen you in a while.”

I gaze at the horizon and the way the sun is barely visible over the tree line. I wish I were on Bluebird Hill watching it go down.

“Do you remember that tire swing we put up on Bluebird Hill?” I ignore his question and ask one of my own. “Is it still there?”

“I think so.” He takes off his hat emblazoned with a machinery company’s logo and runs a hand over his head. “I haven’t been up there in a while. The last time ended up with my truck being buried up to the axle in mud and me having to call Machlan to come get it out at two in the morning.” He grins sheepishly. “I’ll let you guess how that call went.”

My feet stop moving, so Peck halts too. We stand a few feet from the doors to Crave. His eyes search mine in a way only capable someone you’ve known for a long time can.

“He’s in there,” he says, motioning toward the door with his head.

“I hope so.”

Peck’s brow furrows. “Not the answer I was expecting.”

“Why else would I show up here?”

“Don’t you guys usually try to do this behind closed doors?” Peck asks.

“Do what?”

He runs his tongue along his bottom lip before biting down to withhold a grin. It doesn’t work. I roll my eyes at both his question and reaction and head toward the door.

Whatever happens once I’m inside Crave will be fine. Either he’ll serve me a drink or he’ll be a major ass—either option I can work with in my plan to get over Machlan Gibson.

“Are you ignoring me?” Peck asks.

“I just want a drink,” I lie.

“And what do you drink these days?” he prods, seeing through my lie. I’ve never been much of a drinker, and I’m definitely not the kind of girl to just stop by a bar for a drink—this bar, no less.

My mind races to come up with a drink I’ve heard my friends order, all the while trying not to let Peck see how hard my heart is racing and the sweat glistening on my palms. “I’m drinking a tequila and Coke.”

Peck chuckles behind me. “Can I give you one quick tip?”

“No.”

With a deep breath, I step into the building. Antique lanterns on the ceilings and various Christmas lights strung around the building illuminate the bar. I hold my breath before allowing the scent to hit me. It’s the smell of desperation and sweat, of a thousand spilled beers and even more bad decisions. It’s like perfume on your man that isn’t yours: repulsive.

“Fine then,” Peck says. “But when Machlan laughs his ass off because no one has ever, in the history of the universe, ordered a tequila and Coke, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

My cheeks burn. “Oh.”

“Rum and Coke or tequila shots. Not tequila and Coke, Had.” He shoves his hands in the pockets of his worn jeans as he eyes me with amusement. “But do the rum and Coke. You’d be a mess on tequila, and while I’d pay a lot of money to watch Machlan lose his shit over that, I’m not sure he’ll even serve it to you.”

“He has to if I order it,” I say.

Peck leans back and releases a full-belly laugh. “You tell him that.”

“I will.” Looking him in his bright, blue eyes, I almost lose my courage and tell him to get me the hell out of here. He would. He’d take me to Goodman’s, buy me a sweet tea, and drive me around as I spilled my guts. But I can’t do that to him. Or me.

This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. It’s been a long time coming, and I finally broke down last week and realized it had to be done. I have to figure out how to move on with my life. I can’t put roots down somewhere else and allow myself to fall in love or really start a life when my heart is still here. With Machlan.

Peck’s face breaks into a sympathetic smile. “Take my advice and order the rum and Coke. You have a shot at getting that. Though it’s a small one, it’s better than your tequila chances, which are negative sixteen hundred.”

“I don’t understand why you don’t think he’ll serve me.”

“Rhubarb moonshine mean anything to you?” He makes a face reminiscent of someone dying before heading toward the bar.

I stand next to the bulletin boards lining the front wall, thinking about the night with the moonshine. How Mach and I got into a huge fight and I didn’t realize what moonshine was. And how he picked me up and took me home and stayed with me all night to make sure I didn’t pass out in my own vomit.

Besides the people playing pool in the back, the only other patrons drinking are seated near the old jukebox. As my gaze runs across a pair of pink panties pinned to the top of one of the bulletin boards, it settles on Peck. He waves at me to join him.

His merriment at my situation is written all over his face. I hope confidence masks the fear on mine. No matter how I get to the end result, this is going to hurt.

No, this is going to be hell.

I make my way over the cement floors. A man wearing a sleeve of tattoos and an undeniable invitation tickling his lips passes me. He turns around and whistles as he walks backward to the door.

This helps.

My confidence slightly bolstered, I look back at the bar.

This doesn’t help.

My feet shuffle, nearly tripping over an invisible boulder in my way as Machlan’s lips form a thin, hard line. His arms cross his thick chest.

Even with the cool reception, my cheeks still heat.

Machlan sure knows how to make hell feel like home.

Snippet #2:

“Oh my God.” A rush of wind escapes my lungs as the evening air ushers me away from the bar. I’m intoxicated, and I didn’t even drink. That good-looking bastard does this to me every time.

I bend down to tie my shoe. My fingers fumble with the laces, a hold-over from the adrenaline that’s starting to taper off. With each second that passes, I feel a little better about my first interaction with Mach.

There was no real fighting. No bloodshed. No tears.

No sex.

“No,” I groan as I stand. “I’m not going there. That is not a part of the plan.”

“So there was a plan?” Machlan stands, hands tucked in his front pockets, forearms flexing a few feet in front of me. It’s a casual posture that any bystander would read as a guy having an easygoing conversation with a woman. That person would be wrong.

The way his deep brown eyes are almost black and the way the little lines form between them tell me all I need to know. There’s nothing casual about this.

My heart skips a beat as the scent of him rides the breeze and tortures me. It wasn’t as noticeable in the bar. Out here, he’s picking me apart without even trying, using his stupid cologne to unlock me like a puzzle.

His body this close to me is the equivalent of drinking three glasses of wine. I’m hot. Bothered. And the struggle to remember I have a brain and am responsible for my behavior is a real thing.

“Why did you follow me?” My words are smooth, void of emotion, and for that, I’m glad. I don’t know which emotion would come through if any were attached. I want to tease him, fall into the banter we do so well, but that’s not going to help the point of this visit. That’s not going to help me become less attached.

“It’s okay for you to pop in Crave, but it’s weird for me to follow-up?”

“There’s nothing to follow-up.”

“I beg to differ.” He starts to smile but catches it before it really breaks. “Why are you here, Had?”

“I’m not. I’m leaving.”

“Will you stop fucking with me?”

“I’m not fucking with you.” I move deliberately in hopes it exudes a confidence I don’t own. He stands between me and the handle.  “Will you move, please?”

“No.”

“You know what?” I say, wedging myself against him and the door. “You’re making this easier than I thought it would be.” Gripping the handle, I lift. It opens, but there’s not enough room to pull it wide because he. Won’t. Move.

I don’t look at him. I’m way too close for a move that dangerous. Instead, I tug again. The metal edge digs into his side, burying itself in the fabric of his black T-shirt, but it’s not enough to make him step away.

“What is it you’re trying to do?” he asks.

“Right now, it’s open a door.”

His chest bounces around with a deep chuckle. “Fine.” He makes an exaggerated step to the side. It’s just enough room for me to pull open the door. “I’m telling you—if I hear you met up with that asshole—”

“Oh, no,” I say, turning around. “Don’t start your shit with me.”

“It’s not shit, sweetheart.”

Despite knowing the term of endearment wasn’t used with any endearing wishes, my heart flutters. I bite the inside of my cheek to keep focus.

“And I didn’t start it,” he continues. “You’re the one who came into Crave. I didn’t come looking for you.”

“I didn’t come looking for you either.”

It’s a lie, and we both know it.

Snippet #3:

“What the fuck was that?”

My words are ringing through the air as the door slams shut behind Spencer. There’s a bite to my tone, a jagged edge to each syllable that’s delivered with precision. I wait for Hadley to react. All I get is a slight roll of her eyes.

“What’s what?” she asks.

My head spins, the events of the last few minutes tumbling through my mind and clamoring against each other. I can’t make sense of any of it.

“You don’t trust me,” I say. “So what was that all about? Why did you lie for me?”

“I didn’t say I trusted you.”

“You just told Spencer he could.”

She jumps off the stool and places her hands on her narrow hips. “That’s Spencer.”

She’s inches away, close enough for me to actually hear every breath she takes. Each soft intake of air feels like an invisible arm pulling me toward her.

Everything inside me is screaming—from the elation, and relief, of getting the building. From the irritation of Hadley intervening. From the proximity of her body to mine and from the smug look she’s flipping my way.

“Did you want this or not, Mach?”

“Clarify this.”

“Fuck you.”

I grin. “Is that an offer?”

Her arms cross over her chest, but the posture is muted by the way her lips part. “Clearly not.” She flushes. “But thanks for going there.”

“It was your mind that went straight to the gutter.”

She drops her arms at the same time she pulls her lip between her teeth. She’s definitely not doing it for my benefit because she has no way to know how hard it is for me not to reach forward and run my thumb along her jaw and free it. There’s no way she knows this is the exact look, complete with the lust in her eyes I’m scared of never seeing again, that I replay as I lie in bed alone and get off to memories of being entangled in my sheets with her.

“You could’ve just said thank you,” she points out.

“I could’ve.”

“You should’ve.”

“I would’ve if you hadn’t sidetracked me.”

She tilts her head to the side. “Whatever. You’ve never thanked me for anything in your life.”

I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?
