BLOG TOUR – The Trophy Wife by Sunday Tomassetti

Amazon

“I’ve done something terrible.”
On a foggy Palm Beach morning, Cate Cabot waits at a local cafe to meet her best friend for coffee—and a confession. At least that’s what Cate assumes based on the frantic voicemail Odessa left her earlier that morning.
Only Odessa never shows.
And when Cate drives to her home she finds no trace of her. In fact, Odessa isn’t just missing—it’s suddenly as if she never existed in the first place. Even the staff who run her palatial home in the gated Paradise Cove community are claiming Cate must be mistaken, confused.
As Cate searches high and low for her friend who vanished into thin air on the cusp of a mysterious admission, the only thing she finds … is that the truth might be more terrible than she ever could have imagined.
Liking Odessa was easy. Admiring her perfect life, easier so. But finding her? It’s going to be downright impossible without untangling the cryptic web of lies the missing trophy wife left in her wake.

It’s late, and Mrs. DuVernay is in a mood again.

She steps out of her heels as if they disgust her, kicking them askew as she makes her way to her dressing room on the other side of her bedroom. I scramble to grab her shoes, waiting for her to peel out of the day’s clothes and emerge in her favorite silk robe with her initials monogrammed over the right breast.

She’s taking longer than usual to undress today, nothing but huffs and sighs coming from the other side of the doorway. If I had to guess, she’s gained a few pounds. That always seems to send her into a quiet fit when she’s changing. I imagine her examining her tall, thin body from the three angles of her mirror, hugging the shoes against my chest as I wait to go in.

Mrs. DuVernay sighs when she finally comes out a minute later, bare feet covered in red markings from the day spent out and about in killer heels. Markings, I’m convinced, she no longer feels. I tried them on once, when she wasn’t looking—her favorite pair of shoes, the black ones with the teal bottoms. In less than ten steps, I swear I had a blister forming on the back of one of my heels.

“My drink, Zsofia,” she says, hands on her hips as she peers around her bedroom with raised eyebrows and flattened lips.

I nod toward her vanity, where her usual—a dry white wine with a splash of organic pineapple juice—rests on a vintage coaster made of rhinoceros ivory.

Mrs. DuVernay swipes her drink off the table, taking it with her into the master en suite. I carry her shoes into the closet, praying I can locate the correct place for them before she yells for me to fetch her a heated facial towel from the warmer in the spa.

This past Friday, she had two professionals come and sort through her closet—a stylist and an organizer. One helped her create toss/sell/donate piles and the other reconfigured the rest of her things to the point where I can’t find half of what she sends me to retrieve now.

An empty red shoebox with its top misaligned is situated in the middle of the closet. Dropping to my knees, I place the heels neatly inside, fasten the lid, and find the proper spot for it amongst the others along her expansive wall of designer shoes.

“Zsofia,” she calls from the next room, her tone flat and void of emotion.

I leave the closet to find her at the vanity, the day washed off of her face and a thick mask of rosehip stem cells and sea kelp on her face, sinking into her pore-less, ageless, glass-like complexion.

“I’ll be right back with a towel.” I head to the spa room at the end of the hall.

Mrs. DuVernay prefers to have her facialists, masseuses, and manicurists come to the house so she can beautify in private, though I believe it has more to do with the falling-out she had with her group of friends a few years back. They always used to schedule their pampering appointments together. After the squabble, Mrs. DuVernay couldn’t bear to be seen alone and friendless in her favorite beauty haunts, so she persuaded Charles to turn one of the spare bedrooms into a home spa. Not that it took much convincing—Mrs. DuVernay controls the purse strings around here, as much as she prefers to flit around like a Palm Shores trophy wife.

It’s just another act of hers.

Like everything else.

I tiptoe down the hall to the spa room, retrieving a couple of damp wash cloths from the towel warmer on the back counter, and I bring them to her, stepping a few feet back as she breathes in the soft, lavender-scented steam and wipes away the exotic remains of her skincare routine.

When she’s finished, she hands them off, reaches for her wine, and shuffles to her bed, her snow-colored silk robe billowing behind her with every leggy step.

“That’s all for tonight, Zsofia.” She waves me off as she climbs beneath a mountain of high-thread count bed coverings. “Oh. One more thing. Tell Charles it’s time to come to bed on your way out.”

“Yes, Mrs. DuVernay.” I shut the door behind me without making a sound so as not to wake Aviana down the hall. Lord knows teenagers need their rest, and she can be a bit of a bear to deal with in the morning. As her human alarm clock, I prefer that she not be overly tired come six AM. It certainly makes my job a lot easier.

I run my palm along the polished banister on my way down, careful not to make a sound this time of night, when the house has quieted and settled and every footstep or cleared throat reverberates. Once I arrive on the main floor, I head for Mr. DuVernay’s study—a room placed in the farthest reaches of the house, so Charles can play his jazz music and strum on his prized collection of rare guitars without disturbing his headache-prone wife.

Rapping on the outside of the door, I wait for him to answer.

The other side is quiet tonight. No jazz records. No clumsy, six-string chords.

I knock once more, holding my breath as I wait in silence.

Perhaps he isn’t in there?

Twisting the door knob, I crack the door a few inches to check. “Mr. DuVernay?”

With no response, I push the door wider, peeking my entire head in to look around. The room is dark save for the floor lamp in the corner, and the curtains are open, showcasing a view of the water from the floor-to-ceiling windows on his east-facing wall. Boat lights sparkle, their reflections swaying in the distance on the buoying Atlantic. I’ve always thought it seemed dangerous to boat late at night. Then again, I’ve never boated in my life. What would I know?

Peering around the room one last time, I draw in a sharp breath when my gaze comes to him lying on the sofa, still as a statue, fast asleep. Peaceful because he’s anywhere but here.

Padding across the room without a sound, I make my way to him, a slow smile bending my mouth as I watch him sleep.

Charles is an impossibly handsome man; generous brown hair with salt-and-peppered temples, chiseled chin, sun-kissed complexion, runner’s body much younger than his physical age. When he isn’t having an ‘off’ day, he’s a force to be reckoned with, a personality much larger than the room Mrs. DuVernay keeps him confined to most of the time. Charles’ smile alone has turned some of my worst days into some of my brightest, and I live for his eyes—ocean blue on the outside with a ring of hazel in the middle—like they can’t decide what they want to be.

A man like this is wasted on Mrs. DuVernay.

He deserves better.

She deserves worse.

“Mr. DuVernay,” I say his name on the breath of a whisper before placing my fingertips on his shoulder, giving him three light taps. “Mrs. DuVernay would like you to come to bed.”

His dark lashes flutter as his eyes open, and then he squints, focusing on me.

“Ah. It’s you,” he says, placing his hand over mine, gentle and unrushed. “Is my wife asleep yet?”

I swallow the rigid protuberance that has suddenly found a home in my throat. “No, sir.”

Charles pulls himself to a standing position, his gaze never abandoning mine, not for one second. “Well, that’s a shame, isn’t it?”

Our eyes hold for a moment, and I stifle the knowing smile that threatens to curl my lips. He and I both know that the DuVernay household is a serene place when the missus is sleeping—or better yet: off on one of her solo vacations. There are more smiles when she’s away. More laughter. Less tension. More living. Less silent suffering.

We’re both prisoners of circumstance.

Prisoners with very different privileges.

Prisoners of Mrs. DuVernay.

“Goodnight, Zsofia,” he says before striding to the door. “Get some rest.”

I wait alone in his study for a beat, and then I shut off his lamp and close the door on my way out. He’s gone by the time I reach the hall, leaving nothing but the faintest trail of his posh Italian cologne.

Tiptoeing through the darkened DuVernay residence, I make my way to the apartment above the garage—the only home I’ve ever known.

Home sweet prison cell.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Melanie Moreland never disappoints…..

Changing Roles was a fab friends-to-lovers story that was packed with humour, heat, heart and just a little angst.

I adored Liam and his realisation about how he felt about Shelby had him changing steadily but quietly. The character is British and I thought for a Canadian author Melanie did a great job on his language and humour, it’s not often that a non-Brit captures the essence and peculiarities of such a character!

Shelby was awesome. After the end of a marriage gone wrong she ends up in LA with the help of her family. From the minute she meets Liam they hit it off and they soon become great friends who have a wonderful relationship… until things start to change for both of them.

I got Shelby’s apprehension about her age and what people would say about her but I loved how Liam thought about her and his lack of concern for others opinions. They were a perfect pair and balanced each other so well.

A great supporting cast of characters, fantastic banter and nicknames between the MCs and some incidents, that sadly are not fiction in real life for some, all added up to a 5* read for me and one that I would happily recommend.

New York Times/Wall Street Journal/USA Today bestselling author Melanie Moreland, lives a happy and content life in a quiet area of Ontario with her beloved husband of twenty-seven-plus years and their rescue cat, Amber. She loves to throw dinner parties, and also enjoys traveling, here and abroad, but finds coming home is always the best part of any trip.
Melanie loves stories, especially paired with a good wine, and enjoys skydiving (free falling over a fleck of dust) extreme snowboarding (falling down stairs) and piloting her own helicopter (tripping over her own feet.) She’s learned happily ever afters, even bumpy ones, are all in how you tell the story.

BOOK RELEASE & GIVEAWAY – Akra’s Demons (Ravens of War #5) by Elle Boon

Akra’s Demons

Ravens of War #5

Elle Boon

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Blurbs

When the ones who are supposed to love and protect are the ones who—kill you, you tend to be a little jaded. Akra won’t let a little thing like death keep her down, much, except Hell is a long way down.

AKRA—A rare creature of myth and power…
The only thing worse than dying is being killed by those who are supposed to love and protect you, not once but twice. Thousands of years couldn’t dull the pain but it definitely sharpened Akra’s battle skills. Until she’s betrayed once again and given a new life, void of the strength she once possessed a demoness. But when fate grants her the revenge she’s been waiting an eternity to achieve, is it simply a darker destiny set in motion from the past?

BALKY—Half brother to Zeus…
Cursed from the moment he’d been created, his true origins hidden behind a hideous veneer, he did what he had to survive. Balthazar knows all about evil, inside and out as he’s forced to do his master’s bidding, controlling the beast within himself lest he becomes the monster he loathes. Until he sees a being worthy of saving, sacrificing a part of himself, knowing it would likely cost his very soul.

ICHIROU—A former demon-possessed Grim Reaper…
Locked inside his own mind, Ichirou spent his entire life possessed by a demon who only allowed him slivers of clarity. The moment a being who willing gave a piece of himself to save him, Ichirou was freed from the demon, bonding with the man who thought he was irredeemable. Together they form a blood brother bond that’s shaken to their core by one crazy female—Akra.
Viscerally, Akra is the perfect female… Except she’s a demoness. A being they both loathe. However, neither man can deny she awakens something deep within them, a primal part that had been dormant and shows no sign of going away. Akra is unlike anyone they’ve ever encountered and soon they realize she is their Fated.

Can Balky with the blood of Zeus running through him, and Ichirou with the knowledge of his demon, save Akra from an old enemy and find happiness, or will history repeat itself?

The Ravens of War Series continues in the thrilling fifth installment of Elle Boon’s world of larger than life heroes and powerful heroines…Get ready for a fast-paced, innovative play on mythology that will have you spellbound from beginning to end. Ps. You’ll probably wonder if a sane person wrote these, and the answer is…” Eh, what is sane?”

Content Warning: Crazy demonesses rule in this book (We’ve already decided that is a word… ‘cause I made it up), Zeus Zeus Zeus. Um, did I say Zeus?
Yeah he is so unlike any you’ve heard of, and piles of smexy demi-gods and a mix of other beasts to spice up your life. Ps. You’re welcome “wink”.

She fisted herhands, feeling her nails turning to claws. “I will go alone to seemy sister,” she announced.

Bakra stepped infront of her, making her growl. “Don’t take that tone with me,Akra. I don’t care who you were in this lifetime.” She gesturedto the space around them. “You are Akra now. We go with you. Wedidn’t protect you before, but now, we will, even if it’s fromyourself.” She pounded her fist against her own chest.

Several gruntsfollowed Bakra’s statement. Akra looked behind her to see herwarriors with their fists over their hearts. She bared her teethknowing they weren’t as impressive when they weren’t fangs.“Fine, but if you get in my way when I go to kill the little whore,I will gut you.”

“Pfft, likethat’s scary. Not,” Menka joked.

They’d hadtheir guts ripped out a time or two by different demons. Alwaysthey’d healed…it just took time and some painfilled effort to putthem back to rights. However, being on the surface of the Earth, noneof them knew what would happen should they suffer a death blow. Sheshook her head and moved around Bakra. “Don’t get dead,” shesnarled.

“Same to you,”Bakra said loud enough Akra heard her even though she’d alreadytaken several steps away. The demoness never had to yell in order forthe others to hear, her tone always seemed to carry.

By the time shemade it to where the royal family lived, she was fighting the urge tothrow up. Full night had fallen, no longer needing to keep to theshadows, although they all still worked to hide their presence tokeep from setting off alarms. She wondered if anyone had found thedead guards or not. When no shouts had been made, she wondered whyher father hadn’t made a better system, but if Turi was in charge, maybe he was too sure of himself. It was something the young Sultanwould be foolish to continue.

“Here we are,”she announced.

“You lead. Wefollow,” Bakra said unnecessarily.

Several guardswere placed around the perimeter of the structure. Akra watched theirmovements before deciding the best way to go in. She inched slowly upbehind a larger guard, wrapping her arm around his neck. “Sssh, goto sleep,” she whispered even though he had no choice as she cutoff his air supply and sent him into a slumber. With ease, she pulledhis unconscious body into a dark alcove, then she and the otherswalked into the palace she’d called home. Not much had changed inthe time she’d been gone whether it had been a year or fifty. Itall looked eerily familiar. Instead of giving her mind time towander, she marched down the hallway that led to what she assumedwould be Turi and Kumiko’s rooms, her stomach churning the closershe got.

“I said do notdisturb me,” a deep voice growled.

“You do nothave the right to tell me what I can and cannot do in my home.”

Akra paused atthe familiar voice, yet the whining tone held a note she hadn’theard. She held up her hand, stopping the others.

“Ah, that iswhere you are wrong, baishunpu,” he snarled.

Hearing Turi callher sister a whore made her smile.

“I am yourwife.” Kumiko’s voice was raised to an almost hysterical scream.

“I stayed away for a reason. I knew if I ever touched you again, I’d want all of you. I’d want to own you and I wouldn’t give a shit about the price. So, yes, I’m going to spank you.”
“You think me submitting during sex means you own me?” she challenges.
“One night at a time, baby.”
“One night at a time, until you ruin me?”
“And then some,” I assure her. “There’s no saving you now.” Just to be sure she’s clear on that fact, I scoop her up and start walking.
She doesn’t object. She holds onto me. I want to believe she’ll hold on forever, but I’m not sure we’re there yet. Who am I kidding? I know we’re not fucking there yet, which is why we’re not doing this in the kitchen. This isn’t about sex. It’s about us, it’s about our relationship, our connection, the intimacy we have shared, the past come back to life. That means our bedroom.
The place we started and ended days together. The place we talked for hours. The place where we did naughty, kinky things to each other. Okay, I did naughty, kinky things to her more than she did to me. But it was here where the most intense moments were shared.
Once there, I find a small lamp by her bedside alight, casting the room in a dim yellow hue, shadows dancing on the walls with our movements. Shadows that taunt me with everything I’ve hidden from Candace and can no longer hide if I want to make this work. And I do.
I set her down on the floor in front of the mattress, her back to my front. My hand is on her belly, my erection at her hip. My lips at her ear. “Do you think you’re ready to trust me again?”
Her hand goes to my hand as if she’s trying to control where it goes, to hold it there, and yet, she leans into me. “We’ll find out now, won’t we?”

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

OMGGGGG….. each time I think I have a bead on what’s happening with Savage something happens and I’m lost again!!

Rick & Candace have reconnected but there’s so much going on and so many unknowns that we have to wonder if they’re gonna manage a future together.

Lisa Renee Jones keeps you on the edge of your seat, cursing when the book ends as you’re left with more questions than answers, teetering on the edge of yet another cliff-hanger.

Heat, action, intrigue and suspense all added to make Savage Burn another really great read in this trilogy.

I cannot wait for Savage Love to have the mysteries solved and find out if this couple are gonna have a happy ending or not! 4* recommended read.

“I really hate this,” she says when I lift my head.
“I must be losing my touch, then,” I joke, and she slaps my chest.
“Not that, you idiot. I hate being weak.”
“Now who’s being an idiot?” I lightly shake her. “If you sprained your ankle, would you think it weak to see a doctor? Do you think the people you tend to on a daily basis are weak?” When she reluctantly shakes her head, I push my point home. “So how’s this any different? We’re just talking about another part of you that needs some healing. Shit, if you think that makes you weak, you’re calling every cop in Durango a pussy. Wait ‘til I tell the guys.”
“You wouldn’t,” she snaps, her eyes spitting fire.
“If you keep spouting that nonsense, I might.”

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

What can I say about Freya Barker?? She is without doubt one of my favourite authors though she is, IMHO, sadly under-acknowledged when it comes to how good she is at her craft!!

Her stories are touching, well written and filled with humour. Her characters are relatable, likeable and believable who, often times, have dealt with or are going through real life issues. Ms B also throws in spade loads of action, suspense, twists and turns and one helluva lot of heat and passion!

I loved Ava/Blue. She’s always come across as a real tough, no nonsense cookie when we’ve met her in previous stories but learning about her past and that she wasn’t just as tough as she’d have other believe gave her a real sense of vulnerability that I could understand. Saying that, she’s still no shrinking violet and I was pretty sure at points that she was gonna stand fast in her determination to close out Tony Ramirez, even when it wouldn’t have been in her own best interest!! Thankfully that wasn’t the case for too long!

So, to Mr Ramirez. If I’m being honest he was one of these characters who previously I couldn’t quite decide if I really liked or not, he seemed at points to hit on any pretty female with a pulse and I couldn’t quite make up my mind if he was a real manwhore or just a bit of a ladies man! Well, I should never doubt Freya ‘cos, as ever, she made him likeable and turns out he was a really great guy who was there for Ava when she really needed him.

Their relationship, when it began, didn’t take too long to develop into something more and I was cool with that, both are a bit older and when you know what you’ve got is right, what’s the point in wasting time waiting?

The action, suspense and surprises all added to my enjoyment of the story, as did catching up with some of our old favourites from earlier books and previous series. I adored Tony’s dad, he was a great character.

Absolving Blue is another surefire hit in the On Call series and I can’t wait to find out what’s coming next from Ms Barker.

5*

Pierce’s hands dropped to her hips. “Would you rather do something besides play pool?”
Yes, please. “No. This is fine.”
His fingers tightened on her. The heat of his touch penetrated the khaki twill of her shorts. Suddenly, she found it hard to breathe.
“Then turn and bend over the table again.” He waited until she complied, and Brea was achingly aware of his body heat bracketing the backs of her thighs, of the sexual stirrings his closeness roused. “You’re right-handed?”
“Um, yes.”
“With that hand, hold the cue about five inches from the bottom. Now place it near your hip. Don’t hold it so tight. You want to be relaxed but controlled. Good. Align your body with the cue ball. This will help your aim. Exactly. With your left hand, make a V with your thumb and index finger, like this.” He demonstrated. “You’ll balance the tip of the cue in that crevice.”
Brea watched, acutely aware of the veins bulging in his forearms, the size of his hands, the length of his fingers, the hair dusting his knuckles.
Then he took hold of her hips again. “Spread your legs, pretty girl.”
Her stomach tightened. “Why?”
“Your feet are too close together. You’ll find it hard to stabilize when you take your shot. Go on. Yeah, just like that. Now lay the rest of the fingers of your left hand on the table and make a bridge for the V to rest on. You got it.”
“Now what?” she asked.
Brea only half listened to his answer. She was excruciatingly aware of his body heat blistering her, of his hips packed against her backside as he leaned over and utterly surrounded her with his big body.
“That means you need to bend over a bit more.”
“Oh,” she breathed as she rushed to comply.
“Good. Now hold the cue steady and eye the ball. Like that.” He sounded hoarse as his fingers gripped her tighter. Then he pressed his entire chest over her back and breathed against her neck. A shiver wracked her. “Hold still. Yeah. Now take your shot.”
How the devil was she supposed to concentrate when he was all over her? When his musky scent swam in her head and she kept closing her eyes to drink him in? It was hard to concentrate on balancing the cue when her body kept urging her to press back into him with a moan.
But Brea did her best.
The tip of her stick barely poked the cue ball. The white orb rolled lazily across the table, made a polite clap with the first of the balls in the triangle, barely jostling them before rolling away.
“Not a bad first effort. Next time, put a little more force into it.” He eased away, seemingly reluctant to put space between them.
“It was horrible.” She straightened, and her hungry stare climbed him again. “Show me what I should have done?”
He hesitated, then set his pool cue aside. “You didn’t come to play pool. Cutter made you promise not to talk to me, so why are you here?”
“To thank you.” She blushed.
“You could have left cookies for me at the office. But you came to my house. On a Friday night. With your hair curled and your makeup done, wearing pretty white lace.” Pierce fingered the scooped neck of her top before he wrapped his hand around her neck and tilted her face up to meet his stare. “Look me in the eye and tell me why you’re here.”
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do. You’re afraid to admit it.”
Goodness, Pierce could see right through her.
She swallowed. “Terrified.”
His fingers on the back of her neck tightened. “I’m more than happy to give you what you want, but you have to look me in the eye and say it out loud.”
Brea dug her nails into his forearms, her heart pounding. “I don’t understand.”
“I won’t settle for less than your enthusiastic consent when I take you to bed.”

EXCERPT:

Just as I’m turning the page in my book, someone yells, “Watch out!” Unsure of where the voice is coming from, I look to the left and then to the right, but before I can grasp what’s happening, the circular object hits my hand, and my book flies out of my grasp and into the water.
“Shit! I’m so sorry.” A half-naked guy comes running over, sand kicking up around him as his strong legs pound into the ground. The closer he gets, the more of him I’m able to see, and holy shit, do I like what I see. Messy brown hair I could picture running my fingers through, tanned, smooth skin I would enjoy kissing and licking, and if I’m feeling frisky, biting.
My eyes rake over his tattooed, sculpted chest and down to his abs. Two-four-sex… I mean six. God damn! Look at that six-pack. He must work out, probably several times a day. Damn, I’d love for him to work me out…
As he jogs over, his corded arm muscles flex, making it appear as if the ink on his arms is coming alive, and I briefly imagine holding on to those arms while he fucks me good
and hard. He runs past me, and I follow his every move. When he bends over, I check out his butt that’s hidden under his low-hanging board shorts as I fantasize about my legs wrapped around his waist and my heels digging into that butt…
But then he turns around, and in his hands is the now sopping wet copy of Wuthering
Heights
, and I instantly snap out of my lust-filled thoughts.
“Here you go,” he says sheepishly, the soaking wet book dangling from his fingers. Drops of saltwater fall down and land on my knee. My eyes meet his, and just as I’m about to snap at him, the corner of his mouth lifts into a nervous smile, and a single dimple pops out on his cheek, and once again, I’m momentarily distracted by just how good-looking he is.
“Thanks so much.” My reply drips with sarcasm. Taking the book from him, I examine the saturated, ruined pages, and mumble, “At least it wasn’t my mom’s copy.”
“I’m Keegan.” His half-smile turns into a cocky grin. Oh, hell, no…
“I’m not interested.”
He throws his head back with the most beautiful laugh I’ve ever heard. It’s raspy and deep and sexy. My eyes land on his Adam’s apple, and my tongue darts out, wanting to
lick down his throat.
“Fair enough.” He nods. “I really am sorry about the book.” His gorgeous forest green eyes meet mine. “Can I do something to make it up to you?”
“Like sleep with me?” I give him a playful smirk. I haven’t slept with many guys, but I’ve had a couple one-night stands over the last few years. My way of lashing out over my mom’s death.
“No.” He shakes his head. “We’ve already established you’re not interested. Although, I think, based on the way you were eye-fucking me on my way over here, I could probably convince you otherwise.”

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Without doubt, Nikki Ash is becoming one of my favourite authors.

Her writing is fab, the characters are great and so likeable, and she keeps me turning pages, never wanting the story to end!!

I adored Keegan and Blakely. The time they initially spent together and the eventual reconnection showed just what chemistry and spark this pair had.

Blakely and her sister Sierra grew as siblings and BFFs throughout the read, given their history and how things were going between them at the start of the story I wasn’t sure how they were gonna go but what a great job they made of things together.

Keegan was a great LM and gods, he sure seemed like he wasn’t ever gonna let B go once he found her again.

There were a couple of twists and surprises that all added to the story. I really enjoyed how we saw both POVs in both past and present, Keegan’s family was just what you’d want for yourself and gods, how absolutely adorable was that little person!!!!

Read this, it’s definitely one I’d recommend and will, without doubt, be going on my reread list for when I’m next in a bit of a book slump!!

I took another deep draw of whiskey, enjoying the burn in my throat as I frowned.

Shelby.

She did so many thoughtful things. She took care of me. She was my friend.

My best friend.

I looked around the comfortable room. She had made this house into a home for me. She made my life easier. Better. I couldn’t imagine my world without her. Simply the thought of it made my chest hurt the way it did earlier in the music store.

She was special.

My eyes were drawn to the picture again.

Home…heart…

I sat up, suddenly knowing why the thought of her out on a date with Douglas was so upsetting. Why the thought of her dating anyone made me crazy.

I knew now why I hadn’t been on a date since she had come into my life. Why I loved being with her all the time. There was a reason I couldn’t imagine my life without her. Why everything I did revolved around her, and why her opinion and thoughts meant more than anyone else’s. The reason I knew her moods by the music she played. Because I knew her—all of her. Her footsteps and the cadence of her voice. She was the reason I missed home so much while I was away. It wasn’t this place I was longing for—it was her. They were one and the same: My heart—My home.

My Beaker.

My best friend.

It hit me like a ton of bricks.

I was in love with Shelby. Completely and totally in love with her.

I sat back, stunned, the empty glass leaving my fingers and hitting the rug with a dull thud.

Holy shit.

She was gonna kill me.

BLOG TOUR – The Hookup Equation by Roxie Noir

THUE - BT banner

Teach me everything.

The Hookup Equation, an all-new romantic comedy that is “filled to the brim with laughs and emotion” from Roxie Noir, is available now!

The Hookup Equation Final

My whole life, I’ve been a good girl. I follow rules like nobody’s business. I obey guidelines like I was born to it. Show me a line, and I’ll toe it.

I’m even a twenty-two-year-old virgin. Good is my middle name.

And then, I break one tiny little rule. Miniscule. Inconsequential.

Next thing I know, I’m trapped with an incredibly handsome stranger. He’s got eyes like cut emeralds, biceps that makes my head spin, and a smile that has me rethinking all my life choices.

We escape a bar bathroom together. We go on an impromptu date. We share the hottest kiss I’ve ever had, one that leaves me panting for more. We promise to see each other again.

Turns out, we see each other the next morning.

In my calculus class.

Which he’s teaching.

My handsome, sexy date is Professor Loveless, and we’ll be seeing each other plenty. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all semester.

There’s no choice but to call it off. We both have too much at stake: I could lose my scholarship, and he could lose his entire career.

But I can’t call off the way I feel.

I can’t call off the way he looks when he rolls up his sleeves and explains imaginary numbers.

I can’t call off the heated glances, or the way our hands touch when I hand in my homework, or the memory of his body pressing against mine that night.

I’m a virgin.

He’s my professor.

And if we give in, it could cost us both everything.

But I’m so tired of being a good girl.

Excerpt

“I’m sorry I was a jerk on Friday night,” I start over, moving closer. “I still think that what I said was valid, but I didn’t have to —”

He steps closer, leans in.

“—I didn’t have to be an asshole about it,” I say into his ear.

“I think I deserved it,” he says. His lips brush my ear, and my eyes flutter closed.

Don’t, I tell myself. Don’t do a single thing that isn’t apologizing for your behavior.

As if I didn’t seek him out. As if I didn’t drag him into this tiny, cramped back staircase.

“No, you were right,” I tell him, automatically reaching out, steadying myself against his shoulder. “I found you at the banquet. I kissed you later. I gave you a bottle of wine.”

“But I’m the one who should know better,” he says, and then his hand is on mine, holding it against his warm chest. My heart beats harder, faster.

“You think I don’t?”

“I shouldn’t be giving you rides and walking you home,” he goes on. “Pretending that those things are perfectly fine and innocent, because they’re not.”

We shift in the tiny space and suddenly our bodies are touching from shoulder to hip, the jolt of his heat like an electric current.

“We shouldn’t be seeing each other at all,” I tell him, even as I close my eyes, press myself into him so softly I can tell myself I’m not doing anything, my lips millimeters from his ear.

“No,” he says. “The more I see you the harder it is to pretend I don’t like you.”

A hand on my hip, his fingers touching bare skin above my too-small shorts.

“And the harder it is to pretend I don’t want you,” he whispers.

My heart’s beating so hard and fast that it feels like my ribcage is rattling in my body. Outside and from above, the organ hums thickly, surrounding us.

“What if it were my fault?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

I know I should walk away. I know that. I know my coworker Nathaniel got expelled for sexual misconduct and while I have no intention of making porn, I’m fairly certain that sleeping with my professor also falls into that category.

I know he could get fired and his career could be over.

I know a million things wrong with this scenario, and not one of them stops me.

“I mean,” I say, and plant a kiss on his neck, right below his jaw. His fingers curl into my spine.

“What if —” another kiss, higher up, “— it were my fault?”

The last kiss lands on his jawline, right below his ear, my fingers now woven through his hair, his slight stubble sharp on my lips.

He moves his hand until his palm is flat on my back, in the space between the shorts and my vest, underneath the jacket I’m still wearing. He swallows hard, his breath on my neck.

Then his hand is on my face, his thumb stroking my jaw, and he pulls me back, his green eyes nearly black in the dark, his lips parted, his gaze roaming my face. I don’t breathe. I don’t think my heart beats.

And he kisses me.

The door next to me swings open, and a giant of lean muscle, scruffy cheeks, and deep dark brown scowling eyes steps out into the hallway, startling me.

With a really unladylike gasp, I stumble backward until my back hits the doorjamb. “Oh, I’m so sorry,” I squeak. “You scared me. Welcome. Kent emailed me that he’d sublet his place for a couple of months, though he didn’t tell me anything about you. Not that he needed to, I mean, it’s none of my business, really. I’m Lyla Dupree, it’s lovely to meet you.” I thrust my hand out to shake, but he just stares, so I let it fall back to my side.

I’m rambling, and I can’t seem to stop. It’s my thing when I’m nervous, but my roommate Sasha tells me it comes off as bubbly and kind of sweet. From the look on this guy’s face, though, I wonder if she’s just been blowing sunshine up my butt because he looks pissed. And that just makes me even more nervous, so the bubbly word vomit continues.

“You picked an amazing place to live while you’re here in the city. Where are you from? Somewhere out west, maybe? I mean, not that I know. I already told you that, so it’s just a guess, but with the flannel and the beanie…” Dear Jesus, now would be a perfect time for me to shut up. “Anyway, I just finished testing a new recipe, I’m a chef. I don’t know if Kent mentioned that when you talked about the sublet, but he should have. I mean, I do pastries, and my roommate Sasha does more of the real food. Oh my God, she makes the best mac and cheese, truly she’s amazing. Kent said it was a good thing he had to leave for this temporary assignment in London. Something about gaining weight if he lived next to us for too much longer. I don’t know, though, I think something might have happened between him and Sasha, you know? They both kind of started acting funny and then the next thing I know he’s taking a job in England for a year. But, whatever. Do you like sweets? Cakes, cookies, pastries? Any food allergies I should know about?”

And, cue uncomfortable silence.
