Misunderstandings aside, her new neighbor is lumberjack hot, and his grumpiness only makes her more determined to bring a little joy to his life, even if he’d rather be left alone.

Burned by his past, Wyatt isn’t about to let the cheerful free spirit next door into his heart only for her to crush him when she flits out of town again. But with his well-meaning, matchmaking, mother on the case, these two end up spending far too much time together and things between the unlikely pair quickly heat up. It may be true what they say—opposites do attract, but only if their relationship can survive Wyatt’s interfering ex-girlfriend and Felicity’s fear of history repeating itself.

I should have known the moment I saw her that this was no coincidence. A hot crazy lady randomly appears in my house? Not fucking likely. This has Mom’s fingerprints all over it, and the keys clutched in the blonde’s hand are the nail in her coffin. I sigh. The woman is eyeing me like I’m a rabid dog about to strike. Or at least, that’s how she’s looking at me now. I caught the flash of heat in her gaze when my towel dropped a moment ago.

Groaning again, I lean against the doorframe and wonder what I did to deserve this. I’ve spent a long day completing work on a brick fence. My back aches, and all I want is to crack open a beer and watch hockey.

“So?” The blonde clasps her hands together, fidgeting. She’s pretty, if a bit skittish. Her moss-green eyes dart around the kitchen, returning to me every few seconds as though she’s wary of taking her attention off me for too long. “What’s going on?”

I nod toward the keys in her hand. “Those belong to my mother. She owns the house next door, which is the one you actually rented.”

“Oh.” Her slim shoulders slump in relief, and her curls bounce. “Thank goodness for that. It’s all a big misunderstanding.”

I laugh dryly. “It’s no such thing.”

A furrow forms between her brows. “What do you mean? Surely she just gave me the wrong set of keys.”

“If only.”

She seems baffled by my cryptic comment, and I sigh, already able to tell that she’s the type who’s curious enough to stick around until I explain everything.

“Mom intentionally sent you here,” I say, figuring I may as well get the awkwardness out of the way. I’m sure it’s not the only time she’ll be subject to Mom’s match-making machinations if she plans to live next door. She has a wholesome, sweet vibe that Mom will just eat up.

Yeah, I’m going to be dodging this woman for the foreseeable future.

“She hoped we’d run into each other, and that I’d be smitten with you. She set us up.”

“Oh.” This time, there’s a whole other level of meaning to the word. But then she cocks her head, and the furrow deepens. “I wouldn’t have thought you needed to be set up.” Her gaze rakes over me once again, and I can’t help but puff out my chest. It’s been a long time since anyone looked at me with such blatant appreciation, and I can tell she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it, or else she’d be mortified.

“I don’t,” I reply firmly, and her eyes snap up to mine. A delicate, pink flush journeys down her neck. Damn, I need to get rid of her before I actually do start to find her charming. “Here. I’ll get you my key for the place next door, and you can give me that one.” I nod at the key in her hand. She drops it on the counter.

“I’m so sorry about this.” She wrings her hands, looking awkward as fuck. “I didn’t mean to just walk into your house and make myself at home.”

“I know you didn’t,” I assure her. “I’m going to come closer now, is that okay?”

She nods, but her eyes remain on me as I enter the kitchen and head for the key hook by the fridge. I remove the one for the rental and replace it with the key she left on the counter, then offer her the one she actually needs. Our fingers brush as she takes it, and something jolts in my chest. Shaking it off, I snatch my hand away and check that the towel is still secure. The last thing I need is to give her another peep show.

“That key will open the front door of the house next door. Hold onto it for now, and I’ll get Mom to drop by with the proper key tomorrow.”

“I can do that.” She smiles, and I resist the urge to fall back a step, because it lights up her entire face, elevating her from pretty to gut-wrenchingly beautiful. “I don’t want to put you out any more than you already are.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Despite my frustration, I find my lips curving. “It’s not you I’m angry at.”

Her expression softens. “Please don’t be too mad with Nadine. She seems like such a nice person, and I’m sure she only wants to make you happy.”

Damn, she has a point. But whether her intentions are good or not, it’s going to stop me from giving Mom a piece of my mind. She needs to know it’s not all right to hand out my house key to total strangers just because she wants grandbabies.

EXCERPT

As we got to the top of the bluff, the dog raced ahead of me, wagging his tail. I stood for a moment to catch my breath, and he stopped, as if waiting. I cocked my head to the side, studying the large black truck in front of me. It was familiar. My stomach clenched as I moved toward it, recalling why it was familiar.

Intense fire-and-ice eyes came to my mind. Strong arms and a wicked, passionate mouth that was possessive and gentle poked at my memories.

I rounded the back of the truck and stopped, the dog sitting down beside me.

There he was.

Hunter.

He didn’t see me at first. I didn’t interrupt him.

He was too busy dancing. I was too busy staring.

His jeans hugged his ass. His T-shirt was stretched tight across his back and arms. His hair glinted in the sunlight.

And his hips moved. Gyrated. His torso bent and swayed. His arms rose and fell with the beat of the music. He sang, his voice rich and deep, his feet and body keeping perfect rhythm with the song. He spun on his heels and froze. Our eyes locked and held.

And, unexpectedly, he smiled. Wide and carefree. He held out his hand.

“Dance with me, Little Dragon.”

I found myself taking his hand. Joining him under the sun. Letting him lead me, spin me around, pull me to his hot, sunbaked chest as we moved. He crooned in my ear, making me laugh. He joined me, the sound of our shared amusement fading away as the song ended and we broke apart. Slowly, carefully, as if neither of us wanted this moment to end.

BLP REVIEW

I loved this instalment of the ABC CORP series.

We’ve caught up a few times with Ava Callaghan throughout her brothers books and know she’s got a good heart and is fierce when it comes to those she loves….. what we didn’t see is that she never expected the kind of love and connection that her siblings have found for herself….. until she ran into Hunter Owens.

This pair a some similarities in their views of relationships but where Hunter was a a loner, having never experienced family life, Ava was so family oriented and the thought of never having that was foreign and unthinkable to her.

Gods, my heart broke for Hunter at times. The life he’d been dragged up in, his belief that he was meant to be alone and that no one had or could love him as so sad. Meeting Ava was a game changer for him, it was kind frustrating that he couldn’t or wouldn’t acknowledge how his life old be if he just believed in both of them.

We had the always fun interactions with the whole family, let’s face it, with a clan that size and as determined as they are (the women especially) to make people see what’s right in front of them, Hunter really never stood a chance!!

Cash, can I just say I adored him!!!!!

Heartfelt, fun, thought provoking with a little heart hurting but uplifting, Age of Ava was a great read from Ms Melanie which I thoroughly recommend reading – but, in my humble opinion, start this great series at the start to fully enjoy your reading experience.

If I had thought the temperature in this house was hot before Asher showed up, it was absolutely tropical after he arrived. Asher was just a kid the last time I’d seen him, before I’d gone off to college. His voice hadn’t even changed by then. And now, well, now he was all man.

I leaned against the boxes of my stuff stacked in the hallway, watching the way his biceps bunched under the tight sleeves of his T-shirt as he did whatever the hell he was doing to the thermostat. Asher used to be so scrawny.

Of course, I’d seen the way he’d looked at me back then. He was always over at our house, hanging out with Owen, staying for dinner. I knew his parents both worked, but I always wondered if he came to my house so much because of me. As a teenager, that had been a very conceited thought, and I’d forgotten all about it—and Asher—when I’d moved away.

Watching him now was a pleasant distraction from everything. From the fact that I’d had to pack up my life in New York City and move back home to Oak Bend, Michigan, because I couldn’t hack it in the big city. Because I’d made the leap and tried to break out on my own, but I had failed. Now I was back in my hometown with nothing to show for myself except for credit card debt and boxes of stuff.

In fact, watching him do his thing was the first time in a month that I hadn’t been overwhelmed by the heavy feeling of despair in the pit of my stomach weighing me down. I felt relieved to get a break from that sense of despondency, but it was more than that. It wasn’t just a lack of sadness but actual happiness at watching Asher do his thing. Sweat dripped down his forehead, and he wiped the beads away with his forearm. I figured it was time to do something more than just watch.

“Can I get you some water?”

“Uh, yeah,” he said, turning to look at me with eyes that I’d never realized were so damn blue. How had I never noticed that before? “That’d be great.”

“One sec,” I said, heading into the kitchen. Owen always kept the place stocked up for when he came back into town. He was hardly home, but he liked to be prepared and well-hydrated.

I grabbed two bottles from the fridge and went back into the living room, and oh my God—Asher had peeled off his shirt and was using it as a towel. He had a well-defined six pack and a dusting of dark hair between his pecs. His broad shoulders met up with the bulging muscles of his arms.

Was this real life? Or was I dreaming?

“Here you go.” I reached out to pass him his water. The smooth sheen on his skin caught a glint of sunlight, and I thought maybe I was in the presence of a Greek god. Damn.

“Look, Aimee—”

Oh hell no. Is he about to end to our… relationship?

“—I don’t know what’s going on between us, but it seems to be getting out of hand.”

I’ve surpassed indignant. “Out of hand for who? You?”

“Be honest with me, Brooks. Was this what you signed up for when you first downloaded the RendezOooh app? It certainly wasn’t what I signed up for.”

“No, Devin, it wasn’t—”

“Between the weird vibes and the random texts—”

“Weird vibes?”

What the fuck are you talking about, Holt?!

My blood is boiling, and I’m shaking mad.

“We came into this thing just for the sex, and now it’s turned into something else. And if I’m being honest, I can’t deal with any complications right now. Again, it’s not what I signed up for. We’re out of bounds.”

As tough of a woman I claim to be, I can only keep strong for so long. Against my will, a tear rolls down from the corner of my eye.

“You’re right—we aren’t supposed to be spending the night. We didn’t sign up for that,” I concede.

“What if we put some distance between us to choke out the weird vibe? Maybe we can hook up once a month, or even once a quarter.”

He must be kidding.

Hear him out, Aimee…

I contemplate his proposal, knowing in my mind that it’s the right thing to do. I have no right to be mad because this is what I signed up for. The sex-only thing was the parameter we set from the very beginning. We downloaded RendezOooh because we wanted a straight-up sex partner.

We weren’t looking for love.

Instead, we became wrapped up in each other so much that we created a monster.

There’s no way in hell we can put this thing back in the cage. It’s already out and wreaking havoc on our hearts. Well… at least mine, anyway.

I have to cut him off completely. There is no other way around this.

“I can’t do once a month or once a quarter,” I tell him.

“How about once every three weeks?”

“No, Devin—I can’t do this anymore,” I say in a shaky voice. “Not with you, anyway. There is no way I can continue to deny what I feel for you. I have to have everything or nothing at all.”

There—I said it.

I have feelings for you, Devin.

“What are you asking for—a relationship?”

The disgust in his voice has me wanting to take back the words.

But I can’t.

“I—I don’t know what I’m asking,” I stutter.

“I can’t give you that, Aimee… You know that.”

“I know. And that’s why I’m letting you go.”

Kai hopped over the low fence that separated our houses, wearing shorts that fell loosely on his hips. He was shirtless and barefoot with unruly hair.
“You’re trespassing,” I said.
He ignored me and approached with a wide smile. “Did you miss me?”
I did and I was ashamed of it. “Barely noticed you were gone.”
“Well, I missed you, Shayleigh. I couldn’t stop thinking about you the entire trip,” he said, sounding sincere. However, I knew him well. This was Kai being Kai. “I even brought you a present.”
“Whatever it is, it can’t be good.”
“Is William home?” He signaled with his chin in the direction of my house.
“Yes, he’s home and you should leave.”
Surprisingly, he obeyed and jumped back to his side of the fence and I didn’t see him anymore. But good things never last and he returned a few minutes later. At least this time he stayed on his property.
“Come here, Shay.” He waved me over. “I want to give you your gift.”
He wasn’t kidding. Maybe he did think of me. “No, thanks.”
“I’m serious, Shay. Come here. You won’t regret it.”
I bit my lip, eyes everywhere but on Kai. But then I glanced up and pleading brown eyes stared back. Eyes that looked so deeply into my own. My body squirmed just a little as my muscles relaxed. There was something about that gaze of his and I almost caved. Almost.
“No, go home, Kai.” My breathing became softer and his pleading expression dissolved into a smile as soft as the morning light and that was enough to melt the ice in me. “Fine.”
Groaning, I stood and strolled to the fence. He was holding a rectangular box wrapped in gold paper with a red bow.
“For you.” He thrust it in my direction. I took the box and eyed it with uncertainty. “Aren’t you going to open it?”
“What’s in this?”
“Open and you’ll see.”
I shook the box. It was light and whatever was inside shifted. “If this is some prank…”
“Why do you always think the worst of me?”
“Because you are the worst, but I’ll open it later. Thanks.” I turned my back on him and hurried inside.
Two at a time, I ran up the stairs and locked myself in my room. Curious to know what he had gotten me, I tugged on the red bow and loosened the knot. I lifted the cover and once I grasped what was in it, I burned from the roots of my hair to my toes.
I was going to kill Kai!
I marched to my window, unlocked it, and called out his name. He appeared instantly.
“F*ck you, Kai,” I spat.
“No, baby. F*ck you, if you know what I mean.”
Fuming, I picked up the purple dildo and threw it at him. It didn’t reach him but fell on his yard and the jerk burst out laughing.

Twenty minutes into our back and forth over roleplaying, we near the bottom of our second round of drinks. I’m warm all over, and not from the alcohol.

“Let’s discuss what’s exactly on the menu,” he murmurs.

God—why does he turn me on so much?! Am I going to be able to leave here tonight in one piece?

“I’m not hungry. I told you, I already ate,” I sass, playing stupid like he had earlier. Playfully, I toss my hair off my shoulder and arch my back. His eyes turn dark, and I feel myself pooling between my thighs.

You’re fucking me up, dude…

“You know what, Brooks? You’re hot as hell and you know it.”

“The same can be said about you.”

“You ready to start a fuckship with me?”

I frown. “A fuckship?”

“A monogamous relationship that only consists of fucking.”

“I don’t know,” I utter with a smirk. “I’ve already been in one of those for about six years.”

“I’m pretty sure you went into it expecting something else. You’ll know exactly what this is between us from the jump. No more games. Only orgasms.”

Holy shit, I’ve never had a man give it to me straight like that before. It’s such a turn on.

Devin takes out his phone and awakens it. “Let’s get back to the topic of the menu. I made a few notes. How about we agree to have ten initial encounters.”

“Ten?” I squint. “Why ten?”

“I figured it’s a good number for us to reassess if we want to continue on.”

“That’s fair.”

“Let’s take turns choosing the scene. You’ll pick five, I’ll pick five.”

“I’m good with that.”

“Limits… What are yours?” He brings his drink to his mouth and finishes it.

“None,” I answer succinctly.

Devin aspirates, triggering a coughing fit. As a medical professional, I shouldn’t be smiling at his expense, but I am. He takes several moments to get it under control. “Come on,” he rasps, clearing his throat. “Everyone has limits. Here’s mine: I don’t want a dildo up my ass.”

“Don’t knock it until you try it,” I volley. His answering look tells me I’m flustering him, which causes me to fight back a smile.

“Look, freak… I don’t even know you in that way yet. Baby steps.”

“Fine.” Party pooper.

“Our safe word is Ohio.”

“Ohio?” I snort.

“It’s the scariest word I could come up with.”

Excerpt

Before I know what I’m doing, I’m outta my chair and striding across the bar. Everett says my name, but I just shake my head and keep walking. When I get to the stool next to her, I pause to take her in. Tight ass jeans, a sparkly top, and curves for fucking days. Turned toward the bartender, she doesn’t see me, but he does. He gives me a chin tip before vanishing and I lift one leg over the stool to sit next to her.
“Now don’t take this wrong, but you don’t really fit in here.” I lean in so she can hear me.
“No, not really.” She turns to me, and I’m hit with big, chocolate doe eyes and even fuller lips than I imagined.
“How’d you find yourself in O’Malley’s alone?” The bartender appears with another beer, and I thank him.
“A job.” She shrugs and mirrors me by lifting her glass. A job. No fucking way this little thing could make it in this place. The patrons would eat her alive. I bite back a laugh. “But I don’t think he’s very impressed.” She nods to the man delivering drinks across the bar. I think his name is Drake, but I don’t remember.
“Anyone not impressed with you is blind or wrong.” I wink at her and she smirks, still nursing the same beer.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were hitting on me.”
“Good thing you know better.” I put out a hand. “Dax.” She slides her small, soft hand into mine.
“Joslyn. It’s very nice to meet you.” Before she slides her hand from mine I run my thumb over her knuckles, reveling in the softness.
“Nice to meet you, Joslyn. Now I have a question before we get better acquainted. Is there any reason you shouldn’t be talking to me alone in a bar?” I lean in, wanting, needing, to be closer to her. And hoping like hell she doesn’t have a man waiting for her somewhere.
“Nope. But who said we needed to be better acquainted?” Mischief lights those brown eyes and her tongue darts out to lick her bottom lip. Fuck me, I want to be the one licking that lip.
“I’m a nice guy. You seem like a nice girl. I think us getting acquainted sounds like a damn good idea.” I wink at her, and a pink blush starts at her chest and creeps up her neck to her cheeks. “What do you say? Wanna come join us over here?” Her eyes dart to my rowdy party behind us and her lips twist. I stand up and lean in close to her ear. “Don’t worry, none of them will lay a hand on you. You have my word.” Joslyn stands up, her head barely coming up to my shoulder, and looks up at me.

Title: Taken by the Pikosa Warlord
A Barbarian SciFi Romance
Series: Xiveri Mates #7
Author: Elizabeth Stephens

Genre: Barbarian Warlord/Sci-Fi Romance
Release Date: August 31, 2021

BLURB

Halima
I’m wrenched from a five thousand year sleep into a new world. It was supposed to be uninhabited. Humans were supposed to have died off. Those of us preserved in the stasis tanks were supposed to rebuild.

But there were survivors. And now those survivors have formed factions. The leading tribes enslave those weaker and language keeps them apart.

Funny, because in my past life I was the interpreter and I intend to bridge the gaps so that when we escape, we do it together. But I have to get past the warlord watching me first.

Ero
Communication between tribes is unheard of. Forbidden. A death sentence. I should kill the little slave that dares defy this edict.

But the signs suggest something unthinkable. That this little creature is mine.

I need to find a way to get rid of her before she dismantles everything, escapes, liberates slaves, brings warring tribes to my doorstep…but to do that, I’ll have rid myself of this pesky little thing called want.

She makes me want her.

Taken by the Pikosa Warlord is a barbarian SciFi romance that is a complete standalone within the Xiveri Mates series. It features a dark, savage warlord and the brilliant interpreter who defies him, action, steam and a guaranteed HEA.

EXCERPTS

#1

Ero hisses, “Halima.”
“Halima.” I blink and see waves, but they don’t belong to the river. They belong to the ocean. I look up and a man is smiling at me. He has my eyes and my stubborn chin, at least, that’s what my mother tells me. I’m crying but he’s chuckling lightly as he reaches forward and pulls the plastic bag out of my hand.
I’d been devastated to see so much trash on the beach, but my father just grins gently and says, “It resists. That’s how the ocean survives, despite all the harm we do to it. It resists, remaining unbroken. And though it is unbroken by us, it can break us so easily. There are too many droplets and, when they gather, they are capable of magnificent violence. Its calm now is just an illusion so be careful, habibty, with the ocean.
“Respect it, but know that if it can remain unbroken by us, then you should not be broken by this.” He holds up the plastic bag and stuffs it into his pocket. “Now come. Let’s catch up to your mother, aunt and uncle, and all your cousins. The family is waiting.”
“Halima.” I look up. Ero is frowning at me and the entire room falls away.
I waver as I come out of the dream and my slick leather sandal slips on a couple of the rocks. I fall back onto my butt, quickly pulling my toes out of the stream. When I look up, Ero is perched forward on the edge of his seat, veins in his forehead popping proudly. I can see his tension even from here. He opens his mouth, but doesn’t say anything, so I use the opportunity.
“You shouldn’t have done that to Haddock. It was my betrayal. I wanted you to sleep, not to die. I don’t want anyone to die.”
Leaning his elbows onto his knees, he sneers, “It is a bit late for that now, don’t you think?”

#2

“What is Ahrabiq? Another Tanishi language?”
Her eyes get large at that and, whatever pretense she’d been protecting, is shed. She looks around, searching for something. She doesn’t find it. Instead, she comes to me and takes me by the hand.
“Yes, it is a Tanishi language, but I…I don’t know how to say it. I must show you.”
She leads me by the hand to the tray of food, most of which is empty. I’m pleased by the sight of it. She uncorks the wine, releases my hand and repositions her fingers around my wrist.
She dips my longest two fingers into the wine and my fingers drip onto the stone, but she moves them to hover over the half-eaten tablet.
Ahrabiq was the language I spoke first. But it isn’t like Inglesh, another Tanishi language. Ahrabiq…you have to feel it.”
She smiles up at me as she says the Pikosa word for feel and it makes me feel strange, like we’re sharing something private.
She takes my wine-dipped finger and moves it across the tablet to form a peak, then brings it down and to the right before sweeping back in and up.
The long upward stroke links to another upward stroke, this one much shorter, before creating a fluid circle and then another shape that’s somewhere between a triangle and a circle. She concludes by adding two dots above the triangle and two more dots below the shortest line.

حليمة

“Ha-lee-ma,” she whispers. “That is how you illuminate my name, how it should be inscribed.” She lowers my hand and I suffer from the loss of contact.
I stare down at the tray. The foods pushed aside. A bone that’s been gnawed at. The wine stains the dry stone in loops and swirls that don’t mean anything to me. Only that isn’t true, is it?
Halima. In her language. The language she learned first, long before she learned Pikosa. She learned so many other languages between now and then. It makes me jealous of every single person she spoke those languages with.
“And this,” she says, moving my hand again in a different pattern this time, “is Ero. This is your name in Ahrabiq.”

ايرو

I drag my fingers over the letters and feeling hits me with sharp suddenness — a full frontal assault — and I find myself incapable of fighting back.
“You…” I watch the letters disappear, evaporating against the stone until it’s blank and bare. My voice is thick with feeling that I can’t seem to swallow as I say words I didn’t think myself capable of. Gentle words. “You miss this language, don’t you?”
She smiles weakly, but her gaze is pinned to the tablet between us. Her fingers on my wrist smooth down my palm and my eyelids flutter. I want to put my arm around her shoulder…and then I do.
She jolts, as if surprised by the contact, and when she looks up at me, there’s a wetness to her gaze that makes me feel like I’ve somehow failed her.
“Don’t do that,” I whisper.
Her gaze flicks up to mine and she sniffs and shakes her head, like she’s shaking off a weight far too heavy for her slim shoulders to bear.
“You’re right. I don’t miss it,” she says, but it’s a lie I can feel to my core.
“Don’t do that,” I growl. I snatch both my hands away from hers and use them to cup her face.
I stroke the sides of her cheeks, disconcerted that she feels so soft, but not disconcerted enough to stop touching her. I smooth one hand down her throat and touch the tender lines of her collar bone, then smooth that hand underneath the linen flaps covering her shoulder.
My other hand slides around her neck, fingers threading through her tangled curls. I angle her head back and before I can interpret my actions, catch them and stop them, my mouth is covering hers. I kiss her hard, crushing her lips, shocked by how they feel and how good this is.
Feel. That’s what I told her.
Pleasure. That’s what she’s teaching me.

AUTHOR BIO

Elizabeth Stephens writes romance of the SciFi, paranormal and suspenseful varieties. Her favorite trope is enemies-to-lovers and she loves to world-build so much so that she sometimes gets lost in places that don’t exist.

One year into her author journey, she’s been shocked to see her books listed among Amazon’s bestsellers in their categories. Still, her favorite pieces of fanmail are from BIPOC women expressing surprise and gratitude that they’ve found an author who looks like them and (does her very best!) to write books that make them feel included.

Other than writing, Elizabeth also likes to throw very exciting-looking pottery on her balcony in Berlin where she lives with her loving husband (who bought her said pottery wheel for her last birthday) and her doggo, King Louis. Though she’s lived over half her life abroad, she still calls Seattle home.

Praise for Age of Ava:

Bookeverlasting Blog – “Age of Ava by Melanie Moreland is an EPIC read that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!”

Goodreads Review – “This was an entertaining, emotional read, from the first chapter to the last I was drawn into the story that Ms. Moreland wove and had a hard time putting it down when real life got in the way.”

Goodreads Review – “I loved everything about Age of Ava, I was intrigued by the blurb and I fell hook, line and sinker for Ava and Hunter.”

Carol’s Review – “The chemistry between Ava and Hunter was electric.”

Excerpt:

EXCERPT

That was it. My fate was sealed.
David held up the gavel, and in just a matter of seconds, I would belong to Zac Ward for a whole week. “Twenty thousand dollars going once, going twice … sold to Zac Ward!”
If I’d have eaten lunch, it would’ve been all over the stage. That was how sick I felt. Plastering on a smile, I made my way off the stage right to my parents. My mother looked angrier than I was.
She grabbed my shoulders. “We’re going to get you out of this. I’ll pay the twenty grand myself and tell Zac to get lost.”
I shook my head. “No. I’ll get myself out of this.”
When I looked at my dad, he huffed. “I’m sorry, baby girl. We weren’t expecting twenty grand.”
“It’s okay,” I said, glancing over my shoulder. I could see Zac across the room, trying to make his way over to me. “I’m not going to give him the satisfaction of thinking he won. I just wish I knew what the hell he was up to.”
My mother grabbed my hand. “Come on, let’s go. You don’t have to talk to him. We’ll figure this all out.”
I’d waited twelve years to give Zac a piece of my mind. I couldn’t chicken out now. One way or another, I had to face him. “No,” I said, pulling my hand away. “I need to do this on my own.”
Turning on my heel, I ignored my mother’s plea and walked through the crowd with my eyes right on Zac and his on mine. The air in the room turned electric, but I wasn’t about to get burned again. The last thing I wanted was to cause a scene in the middle of the ballroom. Judging by the curious stares of everyone around, they were waiting for something to happen. Snowy Creek was a small town, and one where everyone knew everything. It was no secret that Zac and I were supposed to move away together and build a future. Some might have thought we were young and stupid, but back then, we had it all planned out. He was supposed to be my future and vice versa.
With each step I took, the people around me moved out of the way until there was a clear path to Zac. He smirked at me and it pissed me off even more. “What the hell are you doing?” I snapped, glaring at him.
He glanced around the room at everyone watching us and then back to me. “I wanted to bid on you and I won.”
