Carina Painter lives a life she created in between the pages of her bestselling novel. At least, that’s what she outwardly portrays. A heart-rending childhood followed by an abusive engagement leaves her broken in all ways possible. A chance encounter provides the fork in the road she so desperately desires.

Navy SEAL Smith Eppington is fighting the war of his lifetime. One that isn’t fought with weapons and highly sought intelligence. It’s a battle to remember his past. The accident that scarred seventy five percent of his body, and stole the life of his best friend also seized parts and pieces of his memory. When an author asks to interview him for a fiction novel, he’s ready to pour his heart out no matter the cost.

The friendship that blossoms between Smith and Carina is something extraordinary. It’s a living, breathing love story about finding yourself, change that is out of your control, grasping what you can, and letting go of everything else.

In a twist of kismet, remembering could destroy everything, but fiction may be what saves the day. A friendship built on new truths and a relationship torn apart by old lies collide in a poignant novel by International Bestselling Author, Rachel Robinson.

Meet the Authorheather-c-leigh-bio

Heather C. Leigh is the author of the Amazon best selling Famous series. She likes to write about the ‘dark’ side of fame. The part that the public doesn’t get to see, how difficult it is to live in a fishbowl and how that affects relationships.

Heather was born and raised in New England and currently lives outside Atlanta, GA with her husband, 2 kids, and French Bulldog, Shelby.

She loves the Red Sox, the Patriots, and anything chocolate (but not white chocolate, everyone knows it’s not real chocolate so it doesn’t count) and has left explicit instructions in her will to have her ashes snuck into Fenway Park and sneakily sprinkled all over while her family enjoys beer, hot dogs, and a wicked good time.

My favorite authors are Dan Wells, Ken Follett, and Stephen King.

Once the fantasy world of spring break is over and life resumes in Pennsylvania, a secret she thought she’d be able to keep hidden emerges, making it difficult to ignore.

He steals her money, but she will steal something far more valuable from him — a memento that will forever change his life.

She is a thief.

He is her victim.

**This is a standalone**

Maybe he can be my one-night stand. I’d do him.
Shouldn’t I at least have a memorable night of sex before I go back home? Hell, I’m getting ahead of myself. He might not have any interest in sex. He might be one of those rare guys who still have morals and not fuck the girl until the second date.
He pushes up on his arms, giving me room to breathe. “Please don’t tell me you’re mad. My feelings will be hurt if you didn’t enjoy that as much as I did.” He smiles and it’s infectious.
I shake my head. “No, I’m not mad. A little surprised. And you’ve left me wondering what your intentions are now,” I state, challenging him to spill his guts.
“Does there have to be an agenda?” he asks. “Can’t a hot guy such as myself kiss a beautiful girl like you all because he wants to see if her succulent lips taste as good as they look?”
I narrow my eyes at him then bust out in laughter. “That has to be the corniest pick-up line I’ve ever heard. Do you say that to all the girls?”
“No. Just the ones I want. Just you,” he says with a blank expression. His clear, blue eyes burn into mine with too much seriousness for my liking. Whatever it is he sees in me, he needs to erase the vision quick. I’m not one to settle into a serious relationship, especially a long distance one. And I’m definitely not one for a good lay whenever he sees fit, if that’s what he’s going for. If sex is involved, it’s because I want it.
My mouth suddenly goes dry. I don’t know how to take his declaration. “Well, okay then.”
He rolls away from me, resting his body on his elbows. “Sorry.” He looks up at the starry sky. “Molly gets pissed at me when I don’t use my filter.” He turns his head and looks my way. “I’m kind of straight-forward. I don’t see any sense in pussy-footing around with what I want to say—or do.”
“Nothing wrong with that, I guess,” I say with a shrug. “I prefer someone to be honest with me rather than feed me a line of bullshit. But as for doing what you want…that can get you in a lot of trouble. You’re lucky I didn’t haul off and punch you in the face.” I chuckle. “But, you’re Molly’s brother and I like her, so I don’t want to screw things up with her because of you. Besides, you’re not bad-looking either. And you’re a pretty good kisser, too,” I say as nonchalantly as I can.
Catching me off guard as I’m staring into the same sky as him, he’s back in my personal space. This time his pretty eyes are hidden in the depths of the night.
“Perfect. Because I’m ready for another round of your tongue,” he says as he goes in for the kill.
I shove my arm in between his body and mine before our lips touch and push him off of me. “Don’t press your luck, lover boy.”
Dramatically, he falls on his back, holds his hands over his heart, and throws in a few faux sniffles. “Wounded.”
Tilting my head in his direction, I give him an apathetic glare. “Tuck your lip back in before you get sand in it.”
He shakes his head. “Damn, girl, you’re harsh. You reject me then pour salt in my wounds.”
I can see him looking at me from the corner of his eye, and he’s trying to contain the smirk on his face. I hope he never attends acting classes because he’ll fail miserably.
He quickly flips over to his side and props himself up on his elbow. “So, you wanna go out later tonight?”
“Wasn’t one rejection enough?”
“Psshhh…I’m secure enough with my game to allow a little refusal here and there. It obviously hasn’t stopped me.”
“So I’m a game to you?”
“No, baby cakes, you’re definitely not a game. I can already see that you don’t like to play,” he adds, protruding his bottom lip.
Would I be a bad person if I admit I want to suck on that lip? Of course, I won’t tell him, but his lips are mighty tasty. And they felt amazing against mine. Maybe I could have a little fun with him while I’m here. Stick to one guy for the week instead of taking my chances with some random freak. I sort of know him, and I sort of know his sister. They seem like good people, so he would be perfect. Plus, he carries a love ‘em and leave ‘em vibe, and that is, after all, what I need. No strings attached.
Propping myself up on an elbow, I turn to face him. “Because I feel sorry for you and your enormous ego, I’ll hang out with you tonight. Let me text my besties one more time to see how they are.”

AP new -about the author.jpg
Jill Patten was born a Yankee, but raised a southerner. She lives in the small town of Mayberry, North Carolina which was made famous by a popular TV show back in the sixties. (Maybe there will one day be a statue of her at the end of Main Street. Ha! A girl can dream, right?)
Jill has always loved to read, even during reading labs in middle school for reading comprehension. Judy Blume was her first author she hero-worshipped, maturing to revere the works of Stephen King. With all the fantastic authors today, she simply cannot choose a favorite. Her taste is very eclectic and she loves almost all genres. When she’s not captivated by her fictional characters, she spends time with her sweet husband and two beautiful children.
Music is her muse. Jill also loves elephants, sarcasm, and anything made with sugar, especially sweet tea. She enjoys all things rude and crude and laughs at stuff she probably shouldn’t. She has been accused of being bossy a time or two, but doesn’t really see it herself.
All in all, Jill is just a small town girl in this great big world trying to enable your book addiction.
Oh, and if you read her book, please leave her a review – good or bad, she’ll love you forever.

Blurb:

The invitation promised respite from the harsh realities of life. But here at Pembrook, not even the dead are permitted to rest.

Olivia Pembrook knows something isn’t right. She’s not remembering things she should. Pembrook Manor’s caretaker advises her to stay away from the new guest, but Hunter is attentive and sweet. She feels safe being near such a big, quiet man. He listens, and Lord knows, she can’t remember the last time anyone paid her any attention. So when he invites her to join him for dinner, she can’t say no. Everything is wonderful. Perfect. Until the clock strikes five. The doors lock. And her memories return.

Luke Hunter, a wounded ex-SWAT officer, experiencing a recurrence of his childhood Sensory Perception Disorder, goes to a private island for seclusion and rest. Instead, he finds a lover. A lover who relives her death nightly and forgets everything by sunrise. He’s determined to stop the cycle but is unsure if he can survive his own ghosts – or the ones wandering the halls – long enough to secure their happily-ever-after.

And even if he does… will she remember him tomorrow?

Interview with Cara:

We’re delighted to have Cara Crescent, the author of Don’t Let Me Forget You with us today. Cara kindly agreed to answer a few questions for us….. 🙂

Cara, can you tell us a little about yourself?

Let’s see, I have four teenagers and three cat-snakes (a.k.a. ferrets). I usually take my computer with me to the beach of a nearby lake to write—teenagers are loud creatures. I work for a local non-profit organization that provides safe-parking for homeless families while they wait for affordable housing. I love to read romance, horror, and science fiction and have a TBR pile to rival Everest. I’m a huge fan of Michael Stokes, Neil deGrasse Tyson, & Stephen Colbert—not in any particular order. And I’m very grateful to you for having me on Book Loving Pixies!

* When and why did you begin writing?

I’ve been writing stories since I was a kid, but it took me a long time to find my voice, my motivation, and to find that space in my mind where I can see the stories unfolding. I’d say I started seriously writing about nine years ago. I had found myself at a cross-roads and I needed to make some decisions about what happiness looked like for me. Part of that process involved writing and I realized when I got lost writing a story or creating a world I was happy. I joined Romance Writers of America, started taking classes and never looked back.

* What books/authors, if any, have influenced your writing?

Oh, wow. That’s a tough question. I think everything I’ve read has influenced me in one way or another—I mean, we are a sum of all our experiences, right? Don’t Let Me Forget You specifically was influenced by H. P. Lovecraft’s stories—it has a dark aspect to it, an idea that we’re little specks in the vastness of an unpatrolled universe—which is a very Lovecraftian idea.

* We love reading and generally what we read covers a wide range but, at heart, we are Paranormal Romance junkies. We’re wondering what would be your favourite genre to read?

Anything Romance! I read a lot of historicals, sci-fi, contemporary, erotica, paranormal. I do have a particular love of science fiction romance and wish we had more authors writing it.

* What book are you currently reading?

Right now I’m reading Tsunami Blue by Gayle Ann Williams, which is amazing so far and, even better, the first book of a new-to-me paranormal series. I’m also impatiently waiting for When All the Girls Have Gone by Jane Ann Krentz.

* Finally, can you share a little of your current work with us?

Don’t Let Me Forget You is a cross-genre love story. It is a sci-fi/paranormal romance with horror elements that is more intense than scary. Luke Hunter, who has Sensory Processing Disorder, goes to a private island to escape the media after being fired from Seattle S.W.A.T. and meets Olivia who doesn’t have any idea who he is and whose touch doesn’t bother him. He thinks he’s in heaven until the clock strikes five and Pembrook Manor turns less than pleasant. He discovers the ‘Less Gang—a menagerie of deceased guests, finds out Pembrook’s caretaker is not what he seems, and witnesses Olivia getting snatched up and pulled right through the ceiling. When she shows up the next morning as if nothing happened, he’s sure he’s hallucinating—damn that medication—but he soon realizes that his gorgeous-to-good-to-be-true- host doesn’t remember anything from the day before. He refuses to abandon his one shot at love, but he’s not sure if he can survive the nights long enough to puzzle out what’s gone wrong at Pembrook Manor. If you’re up for a spooky-fun read with an out of this world H-E-A, this one might be for you!

Excerpt:

Luke Hunter was a bit of a mystery. His scowls and quietness gave the impression of indifference, but he offered her his arm as they walked. She was pretty sure he was flirting with her, and now he worried over making sure she ate.

Olivia could get lost in his green eyes. Never had she seen the like, they were the color of fresh sprouted grass. In contrast to his black hair, they appeared to glow from within. He was shy, but he also seemed kind. An odd combination of traits for a man so brutishly large and intimidating. She’d been scared of him at first glance, but the look of wonder on his face when she’d shaken his hand had gone straight to her heart. Most men never bothered to give her a second glance. Most would’ve laid into Watts by now. Not Luke Hunter. Instead, he’d accepted her excuse for Watts’ poor behavior.

He shifted in his seat. “I’ll, uh, grab that plate for you.”

“No.” She bolted up. He must think she was simple, the way she’d sat there staring. “You’re the guest.” She retrieved a plate from the sideboard and when she returned, he lifted the lid to the entrée dish.

He served her a couple of heaping spoonfuls of a hearty stew, before serving himself and setting into his food.

Lord, he was handsome. His dark hair was longish and a bit disheveled and he needed to shave. She eyed his dark stubble. How would the coarse hair feel on her skin? Her mouth? She bit her lip, letting her gaze travel back over his strong features to his magnificent eyes.

He caught her watching him and leaned close. “So, you want to tell me what you were really doing in my room? I promise I won’t tell Watts.”

She mimicked his posture, leaning over the arm of her chair. “Fixing it.” It was a little unnerving the way he studied her lips when she spoke.

His dark eyebrows shot up on his forehead. “With a knife?”

“I like you, Luke.” She smiled, hoping to soften her next words. “You should have left with Watts.”

“You like me, so you want to get rid of me?”

What could she say? That she’d found a strange book upstairs in her father’s lab that had scared her so much she’d had the uncontrollable urge to carve a protection spell under his bed? He’d think she was as crazy as Watt’s did if she told him that.

Hunter sat back in his chair, his lips canting up on one side. “Tell me, who broke things off, you or Watts Junior?”

Caught off guard, she blinked. Oh, Lord. He already thought she was crazy. She let out a long sigh, determined to beat him at his own game. “Well, I tried to make the relationship work, but once he realized I’m a pod person from planet Xeon-Yetispit, I couldn’t get him to stop screaming long enough to talk things out.”

His smile didn’t expand an inch, but his eyes sparkled with mirth. “Guess I’ll have to take my chances with you. Watts took the boat.”

Relief washed through her, catching her by surprise. She hadn’t wanted him to go. After seeing that book and the strange monsters drawn inside, she didn’t want to be alone. Besides, he was starting to act like he wanted to talk to her and it had been so long since she had someone to chat with. Hadn’t it? Sitting close to someone felt odd. Having a person be concerned whether she ate or not seemed strange.

While they ate she was struck by the fact that most people dined together. Like this. It was . . . pleasant. At the same time, something about the simple dinner made her nerves tingle under her skin. Some primal fear began to grow inside her, the reason for those jitters lying out of reach.

He didn’t belong here. Neither did she.

“Are you going to tell me why you’re so anxious for me to go?” He picked up his wine glass.

“It’s not nice here at night.”

“How so?” He took a sip of wine.

She frowned. Should he be drinking wine after taking morphine? “It’s isolated.” She cringed. Lord, that was almost as lame an excuse as the mice. She needed to quit mentally drooling over him and use her brain to come up with better stories. Or better yet, how nice it would be to remember.

“Good. I don’t like people.” No humor softened his statement.

Huh. He didn’t seem to mind her. “What do you do for a living?”

“I’m a, was, an Army Ranger. I worked SWAT for a little while after that. I guess now I’m drifting.”

“You have family nearby?”

He looked away. “Not really.”

That was a non-answer if she’d ever heard one, but she could relate. Her father lived here in the house, but she didn’t see him often. He was too preoccupied with attempting to prove his current thesis, leaving her as alone as Hunter appeared to be. “Me, either.”

Hunter’s gaze shot back to her lips and his brow furrowed.

Now she understood the reason for his unsettling quirk of staring at her lips. He couldn’t hear. “I said, me either.”

His lips parted and a blush covered his cheeks. Slowly, he set his fork down. He folded his napkin and set it on the table.

He was leaving.

Olivia set her hand on his to get his attention and received the same tingling spark of awareness she had earlier. As soon as he looked at her, she blurted, “I like you.”

If anything the stain on his cheeks grew darker. She’d never seen such a big man blush and it seemed at odds with his brusque personality.

“No one ever talks to me. Stay.”

The corner of his lips kicked up. “First you try to chase me away, and now, right when I’m about to give in, you want me to stay?”

She bit her lip in indecision. He was right. She should make him leave. Something was wrong with this place. With her. She couldn’t remember yesterday or the day before. And when she found that creepy book today, frightening images had popped into her mind, almost like memories, but too fantastic and terrible to be real.

Maybe it meant nothing.

Maybe it was like Watts told her and her fugues were due to her grief over her mother and brother’s deaths. If he was right, enjoying the next few days chatting and flirting with a handsome man might help her relax and remember. She grinned. “I’d like for you to stay.”

In response, he shook out his napkin and laid it in his lap.

She kept her hand on his for her next question, in case she needed to grab him again. “How did you learn to read lips so well?”

“I’m not deaf.”

She took a bite of stew, waiting to see if he’d explain.

“Sometimes, things sound different to me. It comes and goes. I never know when it will happen, just that it does.”

“Different how?”

“What do you hear right now? Start with the loudest sounds and end with the ones you have to concentrate to make out.”

“Your voice.” She paused, listening. “Your fork scraping the plate. The grandfather clock. The heater.” She closed her eyes, trying to find other sounds in the room. With a shake of her head, she shrugged. “That’s it. It’s pretty quiet. Now you.”

He tipped his head toward to the swinging door on the other side of the room. “There’s a refrigerator in there and a TV. The television is off, but the buzz of electricity is still winding through it.”

Watts did have a TV in the kitchen. She strained to hear, but couldn’t make out what Hunter described.

“The ticking of the clocks, and their inner workings. That one”—he nodded toward the grandfather clock—“has a rusty gear. It makes a high-pitched squeak every time the seconds’ hand passes the six. The light bulbs hum. All of them.” His attention returned to her. “You took off your shoes and are rubbing your toes on the carpet.”

She stopped the movement. “I’m sorry.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it. Some sounds are . . . comforting in an odd sort of way.”

“What else?” He fascinated her.

“Every time you shift in your seat, I hear your clothes. My clothes. Our forks and knives. Chewing. Swallowing. And, to a lesser degree, your voice.”

She waited until his gaze returned to her mouth. “But everything else is louder?”

“It comes and goes. Electronics are the worst. Something about the pitch, maybe.”

“How were you able to serve in the military?”

He studied her face for so long she didn’t think he’d answer. “For a long time I didn’t have any symptoms, but about three months ago, they came back.”

He picked up his wine and the glass shattered in his hand.

They both froze, Olivia with her fork halfway to her mouth. She stared at the shards of glass, the clear liquid soaking into the table cloth. Blood dripped from his hand.

“Sorry.” He blotted at the mess with his napkin. “That happens to me sometimes.”

Blood. That was why he had to leave, because there would be blood.

A chill swept down her spine. She dropped her fork with a clatter. “You have to go.”

She stood and started pulling his chair away from the table. Lord, the man weighed a ton of bricks. Why had she bothered with the stupid protection spell? She wasn’t a witch. She needed to get him the hell out.

But why?

Hunter stood and she almost fell on her backside when the chair moved.

Because there would be blood.

“Olivia, I didn’t mean—”

“You have to go.” She thrust his cane into his hand. “Now. Get out.”

The grandfather clock began to chime the five o’clock hour. She turned her head toward the sound so abruptly the muscles in her neck pinched.

There was meaning in that sound. She couldn’t quite grasp the significance, but the deep gong of the clock made her breath stop. Made her tummy go queer. Oh, yes, there was meaning in that sound.

It was happening.

What’s happening?

“Olivia?” Hunter’s expression stated he thought she’d lost her mind.

The front door locked.

With the force of a tidal wave, her memories returned, bowing her under their horrible weight.

“Oh, my God.” With one trembling hand she reached out, her fingers clutching tight in Hunter’s shirt front.

Oh, God. Oh, dear God. She was too late.

Meet Jake Danes of Hudson River, Lone Wolf, avid gamer, extreme sports enthusiast, and surfer.  He’s spent the last two years roaming free, exploring the world and escaping the dark place his pack had become after betrayal and murder tore them apart.  Sure life has changed at home, but Jake’s having way too much fun to return.  Riding the waves in Monterrey, and living out of a van…it’s the prefect life, one he never wants to give up no matter how many calls he’s fielding from his big brother…then he catches her scent.

Mimi Chase wanted one perfect year.  One year away from pack politics and her mother’s matchmaking efforts.  Ever since her big brother settled into mating with a healer, Mimi’s mom seems to have gone into overtime in throwing her at every eligible male in the pack.  Choosing to roam seemed the best option, and California an ideal location to get away from everything pack related.  Her plans for art classes, yoga on the beach, maybe a cooking lesson or two while living a hippy dippy lifestyle are all she cares about…until another worlf butts into her every activity – doesn’t he know the rules?

Lone Wolves aren’t supposed to form relationships, so why doesn’t he catch a hint?  Worse, why isn’t she working harder to make sure he does?

Read an Excerpt from WOLF ON BOARD

Mimi grabbed a blanket and her yoga mat from the back of her Mini Cooper. She loved the tiny little vehicle. No matter how often her brother scoffed at the minute size of the car, she didn’t care. It was perfect for her. Compact, like she was, and capable of great speeds—just like her. Locking it up, she glanced east at the rising sun and smiled. It was a little after six in the morning and she’d already had a bit of a run, a lovely cup of hot tea with lemon and ginger to cleanse her system, and she would enjoy the full sunrise and rolling surf with her yoga.

Pausing, she took a deep breath of the salt flavored air. She loved the way the beach smelled. Warm sand. Cool water. Brine. Fish. Birds. Even the coconut oil favored by some of the sunbathers and honest sweat from those running on the paths—they all combined to soothe her soul. Tucking the rolled blanket and yoga mat beneath her arm, she closed the hatch on the car and pivoted to walk toward the beach.

A hint of wolf on the breeze had her pausing to scan the area. Other than a handful of vehicles in the lot, and a couple of runners jogging farther away, she didn’t see anyone. Still, she tested the scent once more. It was faint, as though diluted by the breeze and time. She tracked it all the way to a dilapidated Volkswagen van. It reminded her of the Mystery Machine from Scooby Doo without the paint job.

The scent of wolf grew stronger. The van had to belong to whomever the wolf was, but the lack of fresh markers told her while his scent lingered, he wasn’t present. Adjusting her grip on the rolled blanket and mat, she circled away from the van and continued toward the beach all the while reminding herself that other Lone Wolves may choose to wander California for the same reason she did. No one claimed the beautiful state…well at least not this far north. The closest pack to her location was Sutter Butte, but she’d never heard any word of them taking an interest in the beaches.

Then again, she didn’t talk to a lot of people about the political geography of packs. If it’s all the same, I’d prefer not to encounter any of them. They have a bad rap and I’m on a journey of serenity, and self-discovery…and totally avoiding Mother’s matchmaking. The little voice at the end sounded way too much like her brother Owen’s, and she giggled. Owen, at least, had been sympathetic to her cause when she’d told him and Mason why she wanted to take the time to study in the Golden State.

Her mother’s habit of making pro and con lists for all of the pack’s current eligible bachelors had been bad enough, but when she’d talked to Gillian about potential mates in Hudson River and began colluding with Claudia Buckley about Delta Crescent, Mimi wanted out.

It was so bad, she’d actually asked Owen to get Gillian pregnant just to distract their mother. The silence on his end of the phone had been priceless, followed by peals of laughter from Gillian. Fortunately, her desperation had communicated itself well enough and he’d endorsed her request. Mason made her promise to return at the end of one year, even if she was enjoying herself, and she would be free to return to her studies after, if that was her desire.

Mason is the bomb. She hopped over the rocks to land on the sand and began to stroll in search of a spot that would speak to her. Not only had her alpha understood her dilemma and sympathized with it, he didn’t chastise her for the need to stretch herself beyond the confines of pack and parental expectation. Mimi’s skills for tracking had earned her high marks growing up, and more than one offer from the Hunters to apprentice. It made sense—both her father and her brother were Hunters. Even her two younger brothers were well on the way toward Hunter apprenticeships. Felicity had zero interest in the Hunter parts of their DNA, she preferred her flowers and cultivation, working closely with Tiffany Huston. Still, Mimi didn’t share her sister’s interest in horticulture or her mother’s desire to educate their young or her father and brothers’ drive to protect the pack.

She was…not sure who I am, which is why I am doing this.  The year away from her mother served two purposes; she could take some classes and test her areas of interest from art to acting to writing. She could study yoga and find some serenity. Maybe even figure out who she was, because wasn’t that the whole point of a roam? Most wolves took time to roam the country; some even went around the world.

Murphy had done that and came home with a mate. Mimi grimaced. She loved Murphy, but really, could she have not brought home some gorgeous Italian and mated him with all the requisite gossip? It had Mimi’s mother nudging her to consider a year abroad in…where else? Italy. Shaking her head, she paused on a perfectly smooth area of sand and spread her blanket before unrolling her yoga mat in the center.

Closing her eyes, she took several deep breaths. Inhaling calm, and exhaling the stress. Her mother was in Willow Bend. Mimi was in California. No ridiculous blind dates or not-so-casual meetings with eligible bachelors. Thank God Dylan mated before her mother got it into her head to throw Mimi at every male who came along, she’d actually had a crush on Dylan and he definitely fell into the category of eligible before Chrystal.

Growling, she opened her eyes and glared at the water. She was hardly alone on the beach. Laughter drifted towards her from where the surfers made their way toward deeper water, or where some sat astride their boards waiting for the water to come in. She was supposed to be letting go of her anxiety and not stressing about her mother, mating, or any of a dozen other issues being so far away from the pack could rouse in her.

She’d been in California for three weeks. Three gloriously wonderful, and peaceful weeks. This morning marked a full forty-eight hours since her mother’s last phone call. As loathe, as she was to hurt her feelings, Mimi couldn’t help but be relieved that distance had finally done what she hadn’t been able to manage.

Her mother was quiet.

So hush… Telling herself repeatedly didn’t silence the nagging internal monologue. Mindful of her surroundings, she quieted her growl and concentrated on her breathing. Mountain pose let her stretch her hands toward the sky and raise her face to the breeze. It elongated her spine and let her stretch the muscles from her hamstrings to her deltoids. The wind caressed her face and tousled her hair and batted away the riot of thoughts invading her mind.

From mountain she went to tree pose and rested her right foot against the side of her left knee. Her muscles quivered at first, but gradually she relaxed into the sturdiness. Like the tree she emulated, she let the woes of her mother’s romantic aspirations blow past her. The steadiness bolstered her confidence.

Warrior pose drew away the last curtain and let her mind relax. Her wolf stretched within her, their hearing seeming to sharpen as they noticed the increase of traffic beyond, the crash of water against the shore, and the call of birds overhead. Wolf and woman catalogued the sounds as she pushed her body, identifying any potential threats or lack thereof and remaining mindful.

By the time she drifted into a graceful downward dog, she’d relaxed her breathing and banished her anxiety. Curling her toes, she concentrated on feeling the wholeness of the position, the hinging arch of her hips and the warmth of the sand beneath the mat and blanket.

From triangle pose to seated twists to bridges, she pushed her body to achieve perfect serenity while maintaining her sense of being in the present. The sun warmed her as it continued a steady rise, and she basked in the rays as they heated her skin. When she finally settled into a lotus pose, she let her mind drift, as though flotsam upon the waves before her.

The world withdrew, leaving her alone with the lapping water, humming cars, and screech of seagulls…then water dripped on her. The icy sensation of splashing drops was cold against her skin. Though there had been no call for rain in the forecast, she fought to hold onto her sense of inner peace and deepened her breathing…only to inhale a lungful of coconut and brine mingling with the green scent of dewy sea grass atop the sand dunes with slivers of mint and…

Mimi jerked her eyes open and stared into the blue eyes of the wolf squatting right in front of her. His long, straggly hair clung wetly to his face and shoulders. The wet suit left little of his physique to the imagination, and he canted his head as though trying to figure her out. This close, however, she couldn’t miss a single nuance of his expression or the drops of water sliding off of him to splash wetly against her legs.

How the hell had he approached her so stealthily that she hadn’t sensed or scented him before he dripped on her?

Worse…who was he and what did he want?

“Hey, gorgeous,” he said, as though aware of her racing her thoughts. “What brings a sexy little wolf like you to my stretch of beach?” A slow grin spread his mouth wide, and her stomach did a little flip flop. He was gorgeous and damn if he didn’t know it.

Just what she needed…a hot, sexy wolf who was most assuredly male and made her wolf stand up to take notice. Ignoring her animal’s very natural curiosity, she narrowed her eyes. “I was enjoying a quiet morning. Now go away.”

One thing about having Owen for a brother, she wasn’t helpless, even if she was tiny. Closing her eyes again, she forced her muscles to relax and prayed he’d take the direction well, even as she prepared for the worst.
