Crush (A Bayonet Scars Novella) by JC Emery Road Trip – Plus Series Review

CRUSHTOURBANNER

Young love is always perfect. Until it’s not.

Cheyenne Grady is a total daddy’s girl to her bad-ass father, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Forsaken Motorcycle Club. She’s funny, and kind, and she just wants that deep, earth-shattering love like her dad has with her school secretary, Holly. But Cheyenne’s been looking in the wrong direction, because the only good that can come from the way she looks at Jeremy Whelan is a lesson in heartbreak.

Jeremy always wanted to prospect for the Forsaken Motorcycle Club and wear the same patch as his father. When a life-long dream becomes reality, Jeremy realizes that the outlaw lifestyle is not for the faint of heart. Nor is it easy on relationships. He wants to be a good man, but temptation is everywhere.

Cheyenne is beautiful, and strong, and exactly what Jeremy could have forever. As long as he doesn’t screw it up.

Love is never more powerful than the first time.

EXCERPT

Pulling my phone out of my pocket when it chimes, I read the message that awaits me. It’s from Jeremy and says, WHERE R U?

Crap.

OUT, I text back.

I FUCKIN KNOW THAT. WHERE R U? he responds. I so don’t want to tell him where I’m at or what I’m doing, but he can be relentless and I think I need his help anyway, so I give him the address of the neighbor lady. I hope he doesn’t recognize the street name as the Jennings’ street, but knowing my luck, he will.

DON’T MOVE, he says.

ON WAY HOME, I write back in hopes that this will calm him down.

It doesn’t.

DON’T FUCKIN MOVE, he says and finishes it off with, I GOT 2 HUNT U DOWN, I WON’T BE HAPPY.

That makes two of us, dude. He shouldn’t be looking for me. He’s not on patrol at the house anymore since Dad caught wind of Jeremy’s antics about switching out detail with Diesel anytime he was supposed to be keeping an eye on me. If Dad sent him to find me, then I’m in even more trouble than I think. Oh well, all I know is that I’m fed up with running into one roadblock after another. I’m basically getting nowhere with everything I’m doing and if Jeremy can shed some light on some of this, then maybe working with him won’t be so terrible. I shouldn’t want to share this with him, but I kind of do. For some reason, I trust that he won’t rat me out. I shouldn’t want to share anything with him, especially considering I’ve already shared him with the former bestie. The pain from that betrayal is still too fresh to think about it without getting upset. Still, this is information the club might need so I’m going to try to set my feelings aside. I’m not getting very far on my own and Holly is too important to me to not keep trying.

For Holly I can be mature enough to work with that stupid idiot. I just won’t call him that to his face.

Death comes in Armani. Salvation comes in leather.

Principessa to the Mancuso crime family, Alexandra knows a thing or two about living outside the bounds of the law. Suffocated by the future her father has laid out for her, she makes a choice she can’t take back, changing the entire trajectory of her life.

Thrust into the dark and dangerous world of the Forsaken Motorcycle Club for her own protection, Alex finds herself faced with the last thing she needs right now: the man of her dreams. He’s sex in leather, the devil incarnate, and one hell of a kisser. But he’s also off-limits. Ryan Stone can be her friend, but he’s forbidden to be her lover.

Third-generation Forsaken, Ryan knows nothing other than life on two wheels, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. He enjoys the many privileges that come with the patch, and the only laws he recognizes are the ones set-forth by his club. That is, until who he wants more than anything isn’t allowed on the back of his bike —or in his bed. Balancing his desire for her body, and need to keep her safe, Ryan tries to keep Alex at a distance. Finally having made a choice for herself, she’s done hearing the word “no” and will push boundaries even Ryan himself doesn’t dare cross.

Love is never more tempting than when it’s forbidden.

Loneliness suffocates the heart. Acceptance breaks down walls.

As a Lost Girl to the Forsaken Motorcycle Club, Nicole Whelan knows how to party. She’s not cut-out for relationships and her life is way too complicated for anything more than casual encounters. But one night when she falls into Duke’s bed at the clubhouse, he sees something in her that he can’t let go of—no matter how many times she tries to run.

Having been left to raise her teenage brother, Jeremy, she’s already got her hands full and isn’t looking for anymore complications. But Duke’s just watched his best friend fall for the only girl he couldn’t have, and then almost lose her so shortly after, shaking him to his core. Faced with his own loneliness, he’s more determined than ever to break down Nic’s walls and show her that he can be good for her; but he’s got a bad track record and she’s got a bad temper. Changing his ways isn’t easy when he’s not sure what he’s even changing for.

The violence and turmoil are at an all-time high, and Forsaken is in a vulnerable place when a twist of fate breathes new life into the club. It’s a much-needed beacon of hope for the embattled biker family, even if everyone’s not exactly on board. With Duke and Nic’s relationship already on shaky ground, and something even more important at stake, the Forsaken Motorcycle Club will fight like hell to keep their family together and whole.

Love is never more precious than when it’s new.

Thrash (Bayonet Scars)

With the looming threat from the Mancuso Crime Family, the
Forsaken Motorcycle Club is preparing for a war that could destroy them. Grady,
the club’s Sergeant-at-Arms, knows that love makes you weak, and he has zero
interest in adding to his liabilities– especially now. He’s already got his
teenage daughter who keeps him on his toes and a beef within the club that
could fracture his relationship with a fellow brother for good.
For Holly Mercer, her life is finally getting on track and the last thing she wants is trouble from her hometown’s resident outlaws. Keeping her nose clean is easier said than done, when suddenly she finds herself embroiled in club business. Holly might like the idea of being with a real-life bad boy, but even being in the same room with tough-as-nails Grady flusters her. When Holly inadvertently finds herself on Mancuso’s radar, she has two choices:
trust that Grady will protect her, or continue to refuse the club’s help. Both roads are dangerous, but only one has the chance to damage her beyond repair.
Love is never more dangerous than when it can destroy you.

Rev (Bayonet Scars Book 3)

BLP REVIEW ~ REBECCA

As I write this review, especially given how many MC books I’ve been devouring lately, and how much I moan about the quantity over the quality in this area, I will say that I am surprised this series is not more widely well-known and recommended because hell, yes it’s gritty, brutal and pretty graphic in places but it’s well written, with a different spin on the MC storylines, and when the lines in a scene put it into your head in 3D, while your heart is breaking because it packs that much of a visceral punch, then for me they’ve brought that world to life and that’s a job well done.

Ride (#1)

Death comes in Armani. Salvation comes in leather.

^^^^^ That one line in the blurb had me one-clicking! Then I read the rest and became even more intrigued with the idea of the mafia princess and MC biker story. Out of the series so far this is probably the most difficult for me to review because as the first one it introduces us to the Forsaken World really well, but it also has Ryan who I want to stab. Repeatedly. To death. I loved and hated him at different points, if I’m honest sometimes simultaneously!!

Principessa to the Mancuso crime family, Alexandra makes a choice that sets off a chain of events she could never have anticipated and places her with the Forsaken MC. She is naïve and innocent, having always been sheltered, and is completely unable to cope when these two worlds collide. While Ryan and Alex have chemistry together, that attraction is not given a chance as Ryan is told to stay away – she is to be protected as family (no spoilers, but I did not see that connection coming!) not treated like a lost girl whore on rotation in his bed. The push and pull between Alex and Ryan was frustrating, both young, hormonal and stupid they make mistakes although Ryan brings new meaning to the word “Prick” and hence my need to stab him… As a couple they work, though fuck knows how, but are not a favourite of mine.

However in this first instalment JC Emery sets up the Forsaken World with an eye for detail, twists and turns that you don’t fully appreciate until possibly ‘Rev’ (#3), so even if Ryan annoys the ever-loving fuck out of you it’s more than worth continuing this series.

Thrash (#2)

Loneliness suffocates the heart. Acceptance breaks down walls.

Thrash is told from both Duke and Nicole’s POVs as well as crossing some of the same timeline as Ride, and so, while telling us their story and also continuing to move the series forward, JC manages to enhance the previous book as well.

Nicole has her hands full taking care of her teenage brother, and just surviving life one day at a time. Her step father, a Forsaken Brother, is in jail so she has had no choice but to take on responsibilities that are overwhelming her. No stranger to club life she likes to party and forget but chooses physical release with no complications over a relationship and falls into the Lost Girl role, although she avoids being in Duke’s bed as they have danced around each other for many a year and he’s a complication she can’t afford.

Duke has always wanted Nicole, her fire and strength call to him but the timing has always been off. Then one night changes everything when he succeeds in getting her into his bed. Cue the birds, flowers and HEA you think? Yeah not so much! Duke declares “mine” in fabulous biker alpha style but then disappears for weeks to deal with Mafia business connected to the Principessa. The lack of contact and information from him leads to a host of miscommunications between these two. Nicole is proud, stubborn and has a temper on her, believing he did not mean his claiming she declares it finished before its even really started, and so Duke does the stupid – well actually he does the nasty – with a nasty club whore. Oh I had the feels for Nic at this point so bad, life was treating her really shitty, brother with an attitude and huge chip on his shoulder, dad in jail, ex-boyfriend lurking with his own agenda and then her crush of many years gives her a high followed by the lowest of the low.

So……………..

Do Duke and Nic work past all the issues and misunderstandings to find their hea?

Does the club resolve the issues caused by protecting Alex and taking on the Mafia?

What does the ex-boyfriend want?

Is Ryan still a prick?!?!

I’m not telling, it’s a review not the whole story!

Thrash is a great read, I loved Duke and Nicole, their developing, stumbling relationship, the perspective on events, each other and club life made for a great read, real and gritty, believable if harsh and a great MC book. Oh and that temper of Nicole’s I mentioned…………..you really wouldn’t want to be on the wrong side of that!

Rev (#3)

Everyone belongs somewhere. Even the misfits.

Rev packs a visceral punch that will stay with you for a long long time after you finish it, one line with reference to throwing an object in a particular scene was rotating in 3D in my head it had that much impact. This series is not for the faint hearted who want fluffy, unicorns and rainbows romance, it’s raw and brutal, and in Rev, heartbreaking. This is my favourite personally so far, the series is improving with every book, however with Rev her writing takes it to another level. There is a very graphic and violent scene which you do not see coming, it won’t be to everybody’s taste but if you pay attention to the details realise that every single twist and turn, every character however large or small is there for a reason not just to pad out a story but because JC is evil and had a place she was leading us to that like lambs to the slaughter we followed her on without questioning or realising what was happening until wham bam WTF. Nothing is the obvious, there is so much going on within the club and between individual couples that the story pace is fast and furious, never letting you up for breath.

“There is something undeniably attractive about the lure of bad boys—men who live by their own rules and don’t give a damn what you think about them—and they know it, too.”

Grady, the club’s Sergeant-at-Arms is 100% bad boy, also a bit of an asshole (Typical Forsaken Man!) and when Holly, his daughter’s school administrator and he eventually meet the sparks fly, the chemistry is there but so is a whole lot of attitude from the both of them and not in the good flirty fuck me now way!

Grady is grieving for the loss of his best friend, a loyal intense man whose focus and purpose in life is his club and his daughter, Cheyenne, he’s off his game as Dad without realising however doesn’t appreciate being told it by some school official. Holly sees something in Cheyenne worth fighting for to keep on the straight and narrow so despite being told to mind her own business does no such thing. Unknowingly while protecting Cheyenne Holly puts herself in harm’s way with the Mafia and so has no choice but to accept the protection offered by Grady.

The banter and bickering between these two was fabulous, Holly more than sticks up for herself and together once the chemistry takes over in the fun fuck me now way they are hot!

Rev has my favourite couple in it but that’s not what makes it the best in the series so far. It’s the way the storyline progresses, it’s the way JC Emery writes these characters and their lives, warts and all, flawed, broken, real and it’s the way she wrote that one scene, tackled that horrific event, flawlessly done with a punch you will remember.

Crush (#4)

Young love is always perfect. Until it’s not.

Cheyenne Grady is a total daddy’s girl to her bad-ass father, the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Forsaken Motorcycle Club. She’s funny, and kind, and she just wants that deep, earth-shattering love like her dad has with her school secretary, Holly. But Cheyenne’s been looking in the wrong direction, because the only good that can come from the way she looks at Jeremy Whelan is a lesson in heartbreak.

Cheyenne is a total mini Grady, Forsaken to her bones and attitude is a way of life! I love her!

Jeremy is amazingly sweet, loyal and protective, when you consider what a shitty childhood he had yeah, he gets it wrong sometimes (Forsaken Male – nuff said!) but his heart is always in the right place. He`s hormonal, angry and seen way too much for one so young, torn between the club and his girl, his birthday celebration showing this oh so well.

This is not a new adult college boy meets girl, little bit of angst, HEA  story. They live in a harsh world, deal in reality not naiveté and innocence so it’s a rocky road they travel, but relationships always take work and with determination, forgiveness and perseverance they can get there, can’t they?

I really did not expect to enjoy this one, I’m not a lover of stories where the characters are this young, usually preferring more mature leads but while the main focus is Cheyenne and Jeremy the continuation of the overall story, the interaction between all the characters we already know and love (with the exception of Ryan obviously!) kept this from being one I just read to keep up with the series to one I liked in its own right.

Note to Author……………

I want to request that the next story be Ian’s please because the more I see of him the more intrigued I am, tortured soul bad boy biker. ** wipes drool **

As a child, JC was fascinated by things that went bump in
the night. As they say, some things never change. Now, as an adult, she divides
her time between the sexy law men, mythical creatures, and kick-ass heroines
that live inside her head and pursuing her bachelor’s degree in English. JC is
a San Francisco Bay Area native, but has also called both Texas and Louisiana
home. These days she rocks her flip flops year round in Northern California and
can’t imagine a climate more beautiful. JC writes adult, new adult, and young adult fiction. She dabbles in many different genres including science fiction, horror, chick lit, and murder
mysteries, yet she is most enthralled by supernatural stories– and everything
has at least a splash of romance.
