Forgetting the past isn’t always a choice.

Jo Hayes is desperate for answers. After waking from a coma, she faces a harsh reality. Amnesia has stolen six years of her life. The only thing keeping her sane is her brother, Brighton, who vows to protect her at all cost.

As fear and confusion dominate Jo, she struggles to regain her memories. Pieces slowly emerge once she meets the mysterious Adam Hart. Something about him strikes a nerve she can’t ignore, and the more she’s with him, the harder she fights to remember.

While the flashbacks bring Jo closer to the truth, they leave her physically drained. If her memories don’t return naturally, the truth may destroy more than her mind. It may be the one thing that kills her.

Heartstrings is the first installment in the Heart & Soul Series. If you like riveting romances blended with love, loss, and hope, then you’ll enjoy Kelli McCracken’s gripping look at one woman’s struggle to overcome the odds.

5 Star Review

All I can say is Kelli McCracken blew my mind but in a good way. WOW! So AMAZING!

In Heartstrings we meet Jo, who has suffered a traumatic accident and she can’t remember anything. All she knows is her reason for being is gone, how can she create music again when she can’t play the piano ever again.

She knows everyone around her is keeping things from her and everytime she tries to remember it just hurts her more. Then enter this mysterious person named Adam. Why does he disappear all the time, is he real? Is he a figment of her warped mind and sense of reality?

Jo feels like she is losing what little control she has until Paxton shows up on her doorstep. He looks so much like Adam but who is he really and what is he to her. She feels so connected to him and shares her fears, but who is Paxton really and who is Adam?

In this book Kelli takes us on emotional self discovery as we travel the path right next to Jo. We experience her pain and the frustration of not knowing who she is or who she was for the past few years. The way this story weaves around you and becomes one in your heart is amazing. This book had me feeling so much emotion and at one point I couldn’t see the words through my tears.

I am in awe and wonder of Kelli’s Storytelling Talent. I fell in love with her books with the Soulmate Series, the love affair continued in the Mystique Antiques Series and now with the Heart & Soul Series; I see myself becoming more and more of a super fan of Kelli McCracken’s. I wish I could give this book a MILLION STARS!!! Unfortunately I am limited to five.

Be prepared Kelli because I plan on stalking you for a very long time!!!

Synopsis

Time is running out for Velli’s former mentor, Dr. John Adams. Life caught in the middle of two Spirits is slowly driving both the man and the Lion crazy. Velli is determined to help him out of his bind.

Her plans to take care of the issue and return home quickly are ruined in short order. There’s a war brewing between the Lion and her old friend Derek over the love of Kai. One that has to be resolved just as fast as John needs saved.

Worse, the Raven has his sights set on Velli in hopes of her assistance. She doesn’t know what an ancient Spirit wants from her, but her mistrust of the bird means she wants to avoid him. Circumstance throws her right in his path, and she is intrigued by the mystery she finds.

Velli has to face too many battles that aren’t hers—until an attack on her children. As her world crumbles around her, she and Kane fight to save all the lives hanging in the balance.

Excerpt

The moment she emerged outside she heard Kimi and Kane’s laughter. She crossed the balcony to the railing. The sight below her made her smile grow even more. Down in the pool Kimi played, splashing Kane where he sat in a chair. Right next to him in a covered pumpkin seat was Aidan.

It didn’t surprise her that Kane wasn’t swimming—the man hated water. Actually, he was terrified of it. Whether the fear came from the man or the Wolf, she didn’t know, but she found it ironic that he’d ended up mated with a woman strong in water magic.

Of course, he also had a daughter strong in it as well, as she kept proving with directed splashes right at her father. Velli almost called out to them, but right before the words left her mouth she noticed the Raven perched in a tree across the yard.

Rather than call attention to herself, even if she suspected Kane knew she was near, Velli backed away from the railing. She took a seat by the table and waited. Last thing she’d do was let the Raven have the upper hand by asking him to join her. She’d never been the best with patience, but she’d gotten better the past few years.

In time her patience was rewarded when the large black bird launched into the air. It swooped up until it almost disappeared into the clouds. Instead, it simply disappeared. She wasn’t fooled for one second, so he didn’t get the pleasure of her startling at his arrival perched on the chair beside her.

This time when the Raven spoke it didn’t encompass every molecule. The voice he used was quiet, personal, directed for her ears only. “I knew you would come.”

“Of course you did.” Unwilling to give him too much leeway or any hint of an upper hand, she plowed forward. “I came for John. Not you.”

“I know. The doctor-man is a good human.”

“Yes he is.” A conversation with the air was uncomfortable, but she didn’t know if she dared to face the Raven. She’d always fought against weakness, so she turned to face the bird. “Therefore if you harmed him intentionally for the purpose of drawing me here, I will not make your eternity easy.”

“I have done much in my time. Not all good, but not all bad. Harming the doctor-man is not something I have done. My magic was sound.” The Raven lifted his head. His wings fluttered and his beak clicked in a clear display of indignance. “There are humans that deserve such treatment. He is not one.”

“Am I?” The question was made in half-jest. A test to see where the bird lay on the judgmental scale. Once the question hung in the air she realized some sick part of her was truly curious what he thought. She kept her features still to fight against the wince. Sometimes her old wounds exerted themselves at the most random of times.

His head twisted as only a bird’s could until one cold black beady eye stared her down. “Curious that you would think so.”

“I didn’t think so. I don’t. I was just wondering if you would.”

“Hmmm.” His head twisted the other way. Once again his beak clicked several times before he shook out his feathers. In the midst of the sea of black, Velli could have sworn she caught a glimpse of gray but the Raven turned when he caught her staring. “You need me. I need you.”

“I am not making any sort of bargain with you, Raven.” She met the bird’s gaze levelly. In their whole conversation, this felt the most crucial to stick to her guns. “You say John is a good man. If you mean that you help him without recourse.”

“I will help the doctor-man.” He hopped from the back of the chair to the seat and inched closer. “You are not the least bit curious as to why an ancient creature such as myself would say they need you?”

“If I were, you’d never know.” Truthfully she was flat out dying of curiosity. None of it made much sense to her. The last thing she’d dare to do is tip her hat this early in the game. First she needed to make sure he helped John.

“Will you come speak to me again?”

“As I need to for my work.”

“No. Creature to creature. Once a day. No tricks. If there are tricks, you have permission to pluck my tail feathers.”

“It’s no fun with permission.”

If birds could grin, the raven was. His eyes gleamed with amusement and a low chuckle carried between them. “I promise to fight and peck.”

So the damn thing had a sense of humor, a wicked one at that. Speaking to him more often could be dangerous. She ran the risk of liking him. “We’ll see. Will you tell me what you’ve done now?”

“I can show you.” He spread his wing out toward her. “It will not harm you, but I will give you a taste of the magic used. This will show you what was done to him.”

“Nice try. What if the magic was unintentionally faulty? You could harm me.”

“I hadn’t considered that. I am certain my magic is sound.” He turned his head to stare at the clouds. “Return here tomorrow at the same time. I will have another way to show you.”

“Agreed.”

The Raven tipped his head toward her before he took off into the sky. Before he’d cleared the roof he completely disappeared.

“Damn bird.”

“I heard that.”

Excerpt

On the opposite end of the long hall he emerged into sat the glass doors of the lab. Behind them he could see Kai perched on a stool, her back straight as she tapped on a keyboard. Nearby the large beast of a man that was both Dr. John Adams and the Lion he’d merged with stood at his own computer.

Something the large man said sent Kai laughing so hard, her concentration broke. A flare of jealousy reared its ugly head with a twist in Derek’s gut. Since the Lion had come along things had changed with him and Kai. Her worry for the man and hurting the feelings of either Spirit that was a part of him kept her close to the creature.

Derek kept trying to remind himself that she went home with him, and slept with him. Somehow when those two got together though, he suddenly felt as though he were the odd man out and maybe Kai hadn’t given him everything.

Then he’d remember that he hadn’t given her everything either, and she probably knew it.

He shook off the contemplation. None of that mattered. Today was their anniversary and it would be about them. Without further time to encourage any doubt he pushed open the doors to the lab. “Hey babe.”

She smiled as he crossed the room and tilted her cheek for a kiss. “You’re early.”

“I couldn’t wait any longer. Are you ready to go?” Derek ignored the rumbling growl from the man a few feet away. He slipped his arm around her waist. “I have many promises to keep for our anniversary. I’d like to get started as soon as possible.”

“She is working on something,” John all but snarled.

“She’s always working on something.” Derek couldn’t help but snap back, even as Kai set her hand on his. “Tonight is our anniversary and it’s going to be about us. Lion or no, you possessive beast.”

“Derek.” Kai’s admonishment came with a firm shake of her head. The frown she bore didn’t help his mood one bit. “Just relax. I’m almost done with this.”

John, or rather his Lion, rumbled something under his breath. The man stood staring at his own computer, but Derek knew without checking to see what it was up to that he wasn’t doing anything but stewing in his own juices.

Derek smirked and lifted his head. Sure it was dangerous, and most likely stupid, but he couldn’t help himself but to poke the fire. “Five years. Just imagine, two more years together will be a magical number, won’t it?”

The man’s head shook sharp and fierce, the mane seemed to blossom in the action. Like static electricity had taken hold it rose and grew fuller. Still, he didn’t speak. Yet a dangerous note added to the low rumble.

“Don’t be nasty.” Kai rose to face him. Her hands settled on his shoulders. “You’re only making it harder for him.”

“Why do you care? You’re with me.” Derek narrowed his eyes when she glanced toward John at his statement. “Five years. That’s what we’re celebrating, remember?”

“Of course. He’s my friend, though.” Kai brushed her lips across his. A brutal snarl erupted nearby and she spoke low. “Maybe you should wait outside. I’ll be right there.”

Derek’s rising tension snapped. He was supposed to be her boyfriend, he was sick of playing second fiddle every time the Lion needed placating. “No. I’m sick of waiting while you appease him, Kai.”

The snarl of the Lion erupted into a roar. Before Derek could make sense of what was happening the whole world jarred, the wind knocked out of him hard as he hit the wall of the lab. Several beakers and other minutiae of their work crashed to the floor. “She said to wait outside, you puny little man.”

Derek came to his senses quick enough. He grabbed the man’s wrist with his left hand, and with an ease that seemed to take the Lion off-guard, pried the paw-like hand from his own throat. He used the surprise to his advantage and lashed out with his right foot to kick the man hard enough to knock him into the table into the middle of the room.

Few knew of his secret layer of strength, clearly not even Kai as she shrieked in surprise. “Derek!”

“Me?” Derek glared at her. “What about him? It’s okay for him to shove me into a wall and choke me?”

“You know I don’t…Derek. He can’t control it.” She moved to John’s side. The man was in stunned heap on the floor. From the look of it, both Spirits were in shock and fighting for dominance. Kai touched the mane and the large man jolted in surprise.

Derek let out a bitter laugh. “You know what? Forget it. Happy anniversary, or whatever.”

He tossed the present in their direction. As it slid across the floor and bumped into her leg, he shook his head.

Though she called his name, he ignored her to storm from the lab. Before she could reach him, he’d closed his door. With one swipe of his hand across the keypad he disabled her code so she couldn’t enter.

So much for the idea he could tell her everything.

But there’s more. There’s something deeper he’s trying to hide behind those steely grey eyes––a slight hint of vulnerability which captures her intrigue.

She’d been warned, told that his silence hides a myriad of lies capable of affecting her career and relationships with loved ones. Only she can’t help herself. Testing Keenan’s defenses is an addiction she can’t deny.

Falling in lust is easy. Learning his secrets comes with a price. The cost? Her broken heart.

Inarticulate Excerpt

This is an excerpt from Inarticulate (a standalone contemporary romance) when the two protagonists first meet.

She swung around to the house to hide her smile and bounced up the three stairs toward the front door. Movement nudged her periphery and she slowed, taking in the sight of a man standing in the shadows at the far end of the porch. His hip was cocked against the bannister, his eyes hooded.
Her concentration latched on to him, unmoving as the world around her dulled to a faint hum in her mind. She wasn’t sure what intrigued her. It could be his narrowed stare, the way he didn’t greet her with warmth or kindness. Only sterile appraisal. Or maybe it was the package his arrogance came in—the tense expression, stubbled jaw, and lush lips pressed in a tight line.
Her tongue tingled. Mouth salivated. She would’ve liked to think it was due to the heavenly aroma of her aunt’s cooking drifting in the air. Would’ve liked to…but what was a load of bull.
“Hi.” She gave him a friendly finger wave as Dominic came up behind her.
The man continued to stare, his face still unwelcoming in the shadows.
“Keenan, don’t be a prick.” Dominic tugged on her arm, stealing her attention. “Come on. I’ll introduce you later.”
She kept her focus on the stranger, their gazes entwined, hers soft and inquisitive, his harsh and fierce, as her cousin dragged her inside, the door
slamming shut behind them. “Who was—”
“Oh, my sweet Savannah!” Aunt Michelle hustled up the hall, wiping her hands on an old apron tied around her waist. “It’s so good to see you.”
The familiar face held more wrinkles than Savannah remembered, her aunt’s long blonde hair now gray and thinning. But the beautiful blue eyes were still the same—loving and gentle.
“It’s good to see you, too.” She ignored the strangers poking their heads into the hall from different doorways and fell into a comforting embrace. “Thank you for the dinner invitation.”
“Oh, please,” her aunt chastised. “You don’t need an invitation. Come around any time.”
There was a whirlwind of introductions. Her aunt took position on her right, gushing with affection and compliments, while Dominic remained on her left, muttering snide comments that threatened to make her laugh.
A timer dinged from the kitchen, a welcome reprieve as her aunt excused herself and left Savannah to take a breath. There had to be twenty people crammed into the small house. All of them smiling and friendly, unlike the man outside who still lingered in her thoughts.
“You want a drink?” Dominic nudged her elbow.
Hell yes. “Please.” She followed him to the back of the house, into the laundry, and toward a fridge stocked full of beer, wine, and pre-mixed drinks.
“Help yourself.”
He held the door open while she grabbed a small bottle of something red and no doubt comatosingly sweet. “Thanks.”
“I’m gonna hit the bathroom.” He closed the fridge door and looked at her in concern. “Can you survive for a few minutes without me?”
“I guess I’ll have to. I’m not going to follow you to the toilet.”
Obviously,” he drawled. “You gave up that opportunity when we were eight.”
“Twelve.”
“Ten.” He chuckled and walked from the room, leaving her alone with the hovering threat of chatter from the other end of the house.
It was time to go incognito. She didn’t have the energy to smile at strangers. Alcohol would help, but for now, she needed cool fresh air…and maybe another glimpse at the menacing eyes of the man she’d met on the porch.
She shoved the bottle into her coat pocket and sauntered down the hall, measuring her steps to lessen the clap of her heels. She reached the front door without notice and pulled it open, slipping into the darkness of twilight without a word.
The man was still at the end of the porch, a beer bottle now visible in his hand as he leaned over, resting his elbows on the bannister. He didn’t acknowledge her presence. She supposed a man with arrogance ebbing off him in waves didn’t have to. His dismissal gave her the opportunity to appreciate his ass stretched in well-worn jeans and the perfection of how his black jacket rested at his hips to give her an unhindered view.
“Hi,” she offered for a second time.
He didn’t move, didn’t even spare her a glance as she approached the bannister. He continued staring straight ahead as he lifted the beer bottle to his lips and took a long pull.
“It’s a lovely night for a family dinner.” Was he a distant relative? God, she hoped not, otherwise Dominic’s inbred tendencies were rubbing off on her.
He replied with a jut of his chin. A jut of his God. Damn. Chin.
What an asshole. And wasn’t she just the stupidest set of ovaries to walk the earth, because it only made her itch to push his blatant need for solitude, to poke at him with questions until he acknowledged her with the respect she deserved. The respect any human deserved.
“So… you like beer…” she drawled, glib as hell.
The corner of his mouth twitched as he continued to focus on the street. But still, no answer.
She could smell him, could practically taste his delicious aftershave on her tongue with each inhalation. He was a taunt to all her senses…well, except her ears because the pretentious ass wouldn’t say a word.
He took another swig from his bottle and straightened to face her. She could see his eyes now, the steely silver, almost blue, that made her shiver with their ferocity. He was tall, too. At least an inch above her even with her heels.
She pulled the pre-mix bottle from her jacket pocket and twisted the lid to keep her hands busy. She could see two outcomes eventuating. Either he would smile, knocking her off her feet with the brilliance of his appeal. Or he was going to pull a gun from the inside of his jacket and blow her brains out.
Player or gangster. He could totally pull off both.
“I’m usually a wine drinker myself.” She raised the bottle of bubbly red liquid in her hand, slowly tilting it to her mouth. She took a sip, licked the alcohol from her lips in a deliberately seductive provocation, then lowered the bottle again.
Still, he gave her nothing. Noth-ing. He was the most accomplished jerk she’d ever come across, and yet she still couldn’t ditch the intrigue and walk away. Without a word, he had her tied around his little finger, begging for attention.
“I like your jeans.” She ogled his crotch, wanting to return the discomfort of how humiliating this one-sided conversation was becoming. “They’re snug.”
His lips quirked, giving her a glimpse of straight white teeth. Asshole. Asshole. Ass-hole! He was gorgeous, the faintest hint of humor turning his dangerous eyes playful. She lifted the bottle to her mouth again, this time ignoring any pretense of seduction as she gulped at the liquid.
“Are you always this charm—”
The front door creaked open and she turned to find Dominic eying them both skeptically. “What’s going on?”
She smiled, the biggest, fakest smile she had in her arsenal. “I’m having an in-depth conversation with this lovely gentleman.”
“Really?” Dominic frowned, his brows pulling deeper with every passing second.
“Yep.” There was gushing amounts of sarcasm in her tone. “First we conversed about our drinking habits, then fashion. I was about to bring up the topic of politics and world peace when you rudely interrupted.”
She glanced at the man in the corner, an arrogant smirk now curving those sensuous lips. He wasn’t the only one capable of being a jerk.

“Well, that’s strange…” Dominic came closer. “Because Keenan doesn’t talk.”
