Synopsis

Ryan Detrick thrives on the control she has over her life. Her career and business are on track, as is her love life – which isn’t much of one. After someone took away her control years ago, she swore she’d never lose it again. When she goes out on the town with her friend in hopes of another one night stand, she hones in on the hot new guy at the bar.

Logan Bennett gave up a life full of bad decisions the moment he learned he was going to be a dad. Years of self-control have put him in a good, if lonely place. His best friend drags him out to loosen him up. Ryan’s bold approach throws him off-guard. When he takes her up on a one night stand, both of their best laid plans get thrown on their head when his daughter arrives home early.

Will they choose love? Or will fear of losing control send them running the other way?

About Sarah Cass

Sarah Cass‘ world is regularly turned upside down by her three special needs kids and loving mate, so she breaks genre barriers; dabbling in horror, straight fiction and urban fantasy.  She loves historicals and romance, and characters who are real and flawed, so she writes to understand what makes her fictional people tick.  And she lives for a happy ending – eventually. And enough twists to make it look like she enjoys her title of Queen of Trauma Drama a little too much.

An ADD tendency leaves her with a variety of interests that include singing, dancing, crafting, cooking, and being a photographer. She fights through the struggles of the day, knowing the battles are her crucible; she may emerge scarred, but always stronger.  The rhythms to her activities drive her words forward, pushing her through the labyrinths of the heart and the nightmares of the mind, driving her to find resolutions to her characters’ problems.

While busy creating worlds and characters as real to her as her own family, she leads an active online life with her blog, Redefining Perfect, which gives a real and sometimes raw glimpse into her life and art.  You can most often find her popping out her 140 characters in Twitter speak, and on Facebook.

When Regan’s past comes back to haunt her, she could lose everything. With the cards on the table, Clay has to figure out if he’s willing to listen, or walk away. If he makes the wrong choice, Regan will lose not only her new found independence, she’ll lose her last hope for love.

What Others Are Saying About Stalled Independence

This series is pretty good. Each book I have read is a stand alone story But brings back characters from other stories. Plenty of explicit sex scenes, so be warned. Still I have enjoyed several of these by this author and would buy them again. They are quick easy reads. ~ oldmodelT

This novel is nice!!! I’m very much impressed on the way it was written. Finished this in just a week. and it filled my heart with joy!!! ~ Ken

Did not expect that major twist on it’s story line. The most romantic and sweet book I have read so far. ~ Johnny Jackson

What Others Are Saying About Stars, Stripes & Motorbikes

I give Stars, Stripes & Motorbikes 5 stars. This is my first read by Sarah Cass and I loved it. It was well written and the characters were perfect. ~ Lawonda

This was a quick and enjoyable read I liked the characters and felt drawn into their lives as the story progressed. I look forward to more books by Ms. Sarah Cass. ~ tiggz

The story is well written though and I love the secondary characters too. Though short and sweet, it does have an HEA and can be read as a stand alone. ~ SJ

“So I take it you like to watch.”

A shiver ran down his back. Her voice wove through him easily, adding to the images his imagination already employed. “Depends on what I’m watching.”

“I see. What is it about a battle that gets you going then? Is it the men? I mean, we do have some fine Warriors.” Her light laughter teased him. “Trust me, I know.”

“It wasn’t the Warriors that made me linger.” Much as he wanted to turn around, he knew that seeing her would add to his mental imagery. It could be very detrimental to a logical conversation. If he cared about such a thing. Then again, did he really care about such a thing? Because, damn. She made it seem unimportant.

“Honest. Well, either you’re honest or you just don’t like me thinking you’re ogling men.” The light touch of her fingers to his arm sent a jolt through his entire body. What the hell was it about her?

“No. Just honest. If you were honest you’d admit that you were angling for me to watch you. From the start.” He quirked a brow. “That’s why you haven’t approached me yet. Right?”

“Oooh, conceited too.” A light chuckle reached his ears. Then she stepped around him her presence a rich heat against the sudden cold pit in his stomach. Chocolate eyes, deeper than he’d imagined sought him out. The sun caught her hair, revealing a red undertone unexpected in a native of the Tribe. Then again, nothing about this woman was expected. “Perhaps I’ve just been very busy. There is a wedding happening very soon, you know.”

“So I’ve heard. The Chief’s son and the Medicine Man’s daughter. Quite a pairing.” Truth be told he’d met neither of the betrothed youths. Then again he’d met very few people on the reservation yet. By choice. “Are you saying you’re involved?”

A small twitch at the corner of delicious lips belied her amusement. “Yes. I know both of them very well. The wedding is keeping everyone busy.”

She appeared to be hiding something. What it was, he had no idea. Then again he didn’t think he wanted to know. This one was handful enough without all the details, instinct told him that much. So why did he want to know more? “Obviously not too busy for some playtime with the Warriors.”

“I need to keep my skills sharp. Stitching beads and planting flowers aren’t on my list of fun things to do. I’ve fought with the Warriors for as long as I was first allowed to.” Her lip made that coy quirk again. “Then when I got older I fought with them in more ways than one.”

“I’m sure you did.”

“So are you done with talking now?”

“What else did you have in mind?”

One by one her fingers inched up his chest. “Well I admit I’m curious what an old man is capable of. Does the experience help you or hinder you?”

Every touch raised his temperature, his blood boiling by the time he managed to close his hand over hers. “Just how would it hinder me?”

“It’s easy to get stuck in a rut. As you get older and more ancient you forget that there can be new, fun, and exciting ways to do things. In all forms of battle.”

“Is that so?”

“So are you stuck in a rut?”

“Not that I know of.”

Her soft hum shivered through him to his core. It bothered him that she took that moment to step back. The summer heat that replaced her paled in comparison to her presence. “In other words yes. Interesting.”

“Are you always so contrary?” Kane closed the distance between them. His body burned with the need to feel her close again. Once again the Wolf pushed its own need forward to mesh with Kane’s, blinding him. Logic had no chance now.

“It’s the only way to live. Life is too boring otherwise.”

“Hate being bored, do you?” Kane gripped her arm and whipped her around to face him. Despite her gasp a smile lit her features. The body he’d admired pressed willingly into his. It drove him to the brink.

“Very much so.” Breathless, eager.

The Wolf pushed through Kane’s last hint of doubt and his lips claimed hers. Without hesitation her hands roamed along his chest and back, spreading their heat along his nerves. It made him regret not returning to traditional dress yet. At the moment he’d give anything to feel her hands directly on his flesh.

Her mind proved to be on the same track, the shriek of tearing cotton exposing his flesh to the hot air. Then her hands were on his chest, nails raking at the skin. Her soft moan rattled through him when her back hit a tree.

Kane fought back to the forefront, wanting to enjoy every second. As one of her legs hooked around his waist he gripped the flesh and pressed hard into her. Each of his earlier fantasies springing to life one by one.

Until she froze, her nails still embedded in his chest. Tension seeped through her just before she pushed him back. “No.”

He couldn’t stop his growl, the frustration too strong to ignore. She stopped him now? After that build up? “What?”

“I shouldn’t.”

“Don’t seem like the type to care about that.”

“I’m not.” Her breath shook, her hands trembling as she tried to pull back away from him. “This is not. Not the same.”

One glimpse of her trembling lip doused the heat. Down deep he felt a stirring of concern, the Wolf whined quietly. Why on earth did his Wolf want to help her? To soothe her? The Wolf had never cared before. Now it did, and so did Kane. Gently he ran his thumb along her lower lip “How so?”

“Don’t.” She slapped his hand away so fast he never saw her move.

“Thought you liked to push boundaries.” One thumb brushed along the soft skin of her stomach, unable to stop touching her completely. Every fiber of his being wanted to get her wrapped in his arms again. Even so he was willing to wait. To get her story along with her body.

“Not this one.”

“Am I too old for you?”

That earned him a snort. “You are too old for everyone but the Sphinx.” At last she started to relax a bit.

“Good point.” He chuckled, relaxing a bit himself now that she loosened up enough to joke with him. “Is it because we’re in the woods?”

“No. I’m all for a good screw against a tree. A little rough with the fun is always and added bonus.” She smirked. “Unless you like saccharine.”

“I’m diabetic.” His sarcasm made her laugh again. He leaned in. “Just as well. Don’t even know your name.”

“I suppose it’s for the best.” Her breath brushed his ear. “I’m a tease anyway, right?”

“I hope not.”

Velli leaned out the window, following the rustle of trees toward the parking lot three houses away. “Someone is here!”

“Silver Fox said we were expecting a Tribe member home. Perhaps that is him. Don’t you worry, your Chief will greet him.” Elu chuckled. “My husband is looking forward to meeting this Tribe member.”

“Is that the Healer?” The butterflies that had been absent sprang to life. Something new; something different. Now that she could get excited about. “The one that has been in the States in their military? Isn’t he the oldest living Shifter? Like over two hundred years old or something?”

“Yes. I believe that’s him. Kane was his original name, I’m not sure if he’ll be using that. He and his mate wished to return to a Tribal home.” Snowbird kept her curiosity restrained, but her head did pop out the window to look toward the parking lot.

“His mate. Melik said she was a descendant of the extinct Asian Tribe. That’s something totally unique – alongside the uniqueness of a Healer? I have to see that!”

“Nirvelli.” Snowbird might have been shaking her head, but her smile belied the amusement she contained. “You have a party downstairs. For your wedding.”

“I’ve never been into that girly stuff, Mother. Please?” Velli clasped her hand. “Nothing new or exciting ever happens here. I just want to see what a two hundred year old man and a descendant of the Asian Tribe look like. I won’t be long. Please.”

“Oh let her go.” Elu’s soft laughter filled the moment of hesitation. “If we were her age we’d be doing the same thing. We’ve just learned patience in our old age.”

The moment Snowbird nodded Velli leapt out the window. After an instinctive dip into her water magic a pillow of condensed water formed beneath her feet in order to carry her to the ground.

The lands of the Tribe held only one modernized entrance—well secluded and hidden—that allowed cars to enter. Only those invited or that held magic could find it and enter without difficulty.

The Tribe had a burning need to keep their true numbers secretive for the world not to know that Shifters were real and sheltered right here. Still they relied on the modern world for minor conveniences, such as food when their stores were low. It was the only reason the entrance existed. Otherwise the Elders would be happy to seal off the lands to outsiders completely.

By the time Velli had reached the last house between her home and the parking lot, she’d already spotted the cluster of Warriors around the arrivals. Even though she couldn’t be called shy, something made her hold back. Lingering behind the house, she decided to observe the pair rather than seek interaction.

After all, they were already surrounded and being peppered with conversation from Chief Silver Fox and her own father, Black Feather. As the Warriors started to retreat she caught her first real glimpse of the new arrivals.

Before she could truly appreciate any appearances, the Wolf that was her companion Spirit rushed forward. Eager yipping entered her mind so fast she had to close her eyes to force back the attempt to Shift.

She didn’t understand her Wolf’s eagerness, even if the man was a sight to see for one supposed to be over two hundred years old. Once the Wolf eased up, she decided to get a better look.

After mentally telling her Wolf to stay back she opened her eyes. Hoping to keep her companion Spirit at bay for a while longer she started with Kane’s feet.

Heavy black boots, she had no doubt were steel toe. Black jeans crept up along his calves, hugged tight to well-defined thighs. The black leather belt was just a speed bump on the way to his abs.

Even through his black shirt she could see the carved lines of his abs. His arms were folded across his chest, bare and just as well muscled as the rest of him.

Perfect.

Each muscle was carefully sculpted to perfection. His chest was rock hard. Shoulders so broad.

A rough growl reached her ears, and she realized it had come from her own lips. She cleared her throat and tried to push back her Wolf. Never had her Wolf cared about her obsession with men.

Velli skipped right over his face to his head, studying the thick head of black hair cut short in the style of the military. No, two hundred years hadn’t even thinned one hair on his head.

His strong jawline was dirty with just a bit of stubble – a rarity among the Tribe – facial hair and body hair were all but non-existent. Her fingers twitched with an unexpected urge to feel the rough stubble.

Then his eyes consumed her. Strong amber-brown intensity met hers with unabashed fire. He’d seen her studying him. Yet it didn’t appear to slow him down. Small movements of his body, the words formed in conversation drawing her attention to the smooth movements of his sensual lips.

The urge to Shift pressed at the back of her eyes until she had to look away. To gather herself. She needed a distraction. His companion, his mate. The descendant of the Asian Tribe. That would have to do. To remember that he had a mate. To see what she looked like.

The woman’s flaming red hair shone so bright for a moment Velli suspected dye. If this woman were a Shifter though, no hair color would ever hold. Beneath the bright flash of red sat creamy white skin the palest Velli had ever seen.

How could this woman be a descendant of the Asian Tribe?

One glimpse of her eyes and Velli saw it. The slight tilt in a stunning and shocking emerald green. With a blink they turned yellow and cat-like before reverting back green. At her temples sat three pure white strands of thick hair that looked just like whiskers.

Interesting.

Her skin tingled and she drew her eyes back to see Kane giving her the same perusal she had granted him. When his eyes locked onto hers again, a shiver ran down her spine. In the back of her head the Wolf growled out, Mine.

“Oh no,” she whispered to herself. “This one is not for us. We’re just looking.”

PROMO TOUR ~ Luck of the Cowgirl by Sarah Cass

🍀 Luck of the Cowgirl 🍀

Holidays in Lake Point Series
by Sarah Cass

Promo Tour February 28th – March 19th

Calli Ryley lost everything when her last relationship went south—her job, her lover, and she hightailed her way all the way to Lake Point to escape. She’s steeled her heart against love, and most certainly wouldn’t get involved on the job again. The best thing she can do is keep working with her head down and no sights on love.

Dee Parker has spent the past year away from Lake Point dealing with illness and death. She returns home ready to dive back into life. When she first sets eyes on the sexy cowgirl Calli, she’s instantly smitten. The cold reception Calli gives her leaves Dee ready to move on.

Could one seemingly simple business trip turn their luck in love around? Or will love get snowed in?

Deanna rubbed her eyes with the heels of her hands. All of the information in front of her made her eyes cross. She knew eventually she’d get a handle on the whole breeding business, but at first glance it was a complicated mess of bloodlines and pure money.

The money she could handle, the pedigrees were convoluted and confusing to a newbie. She pondered asking Calli for help, but then thought better of it. After the first couple of days of overt flirtation, Deanna had pulled her head out of her ass. Maybe she’d read Calli wrong, maybe not, whatever the reason flirting clearly put the girl off. Instead, Deanna had settled into a routine that didn’t involve much contact with the sexy cowgirl.

When she had seen Calli, Deanna had been the consummate professional. After all, she was an adult and knew how to act with some decorum when she needed to. Didn’t mean she liked it any. Having fun was a much better way to pass the day.

She groaned in frustration and leaned back in her seat to stare at the ceiling. “I am smart enough to do this. I really am.”

“Uh, okay.” Calli’s cute little drawl interrupted Deanna’s self-chastising moment. If Deanna wasn’t completely delusional she would have sworn there was a hint of laughter in Calli’s voice. “Don’t recall saying you weren’t.”

“Oh, no. You didn’t.” Deanna sat upright and remembered her resolve to not act like a fool around the woman in front of her any longer. “I was yelling at myself. Maybe I’m just trying to think too much.”

“Wouldn’t be the first person to do that. Most of us do.” Calli’s gaze settled on the papers scattered on the desk. “Hank wouldn’t have hired you if you couldn’t do it. That man’s got a good business head on him.”

“Yes he does, everything is in great order for me. It’s this breeding info. The family trees and such are making my eyes cross.” Deanna flipped through a few of the folders on her desk. “And Hank said something about one of the broodmares no longer being able to breed, and having to replace her and finding a few more for the ones that are aging out.”

“You don’t have to worry about that so much. I know the circuit and the horses well enough. I’ll let you know what we need.”

“But I need to understand it.” Deanna pursed her lips. “I’m not your boss and you aren’t mine, so we’re going to have to work together on this. I need to know what I’m spending the businesses money on.”

“Fair enough.” Calli hesitated at the door a minute longer before she entered to sit across from Deanna. “Did Hank tell you who I’ve got my eye on to bring in?”

“Yes, let me find the list.” Deanna pulled open a drawer and pulled out the pad she’d written notes on in her lengthy talks with Hank. “Sorry, I haven’t had time to transfer all my notes to the computer. Let’s see, there’s one in California that’s going to cost a pretty penny to ship.”

“But she’s not bred yet and her line hasn’t touched any of the ones we usually work with. It’ll widen our birth and bring back some repeat business we might have lost in the next few years. It’s worth the money.”

Deanna nodded at the logic. “Are there any others like that?”

“Probably not on the list he gave you. I have a lead on another in Colorado. She’s not ready yet for breeding, but I’d like to bring her in anyway.” Calli leaned on the opposite side of the desk, her face brightening the more they talked about the horses. “She’s a beauty, too. Unfortunately, she’s also fast so they’re thinking of training her to race instead.”

“That’s unusual, isn’t it?”

“Yes. Like I said, she is fast. That could also drive up how much she’d be worth on the breeding circuit. Get a fast stud and a fast broodmare and that ups the ante.”

“Interesting. What’ll it take to convince them to sell her to us?”

“I’m working Carl over best as I can. He’s waffling, though.”

Deanna pursed her lips as she thought it over. From what she knew, a young mare with a long life of foaling ahead of her could be good for business. “Would it help if we went and met him directly?”

“We?” Calli grew cold immediately and sat back. “I can handle it myself.”

“I’d like to see how this works.”

“Then you can come with when I go over to the next county and talk to the Billings. No need for both of us to go flying.”

Deanna couldn’t comprehend the attitude change in Calli over the simple suggestion. “You do business with the Billings all the time. This Carl is new. I’d like to be involved.”

Calli’s lips thinned and she turned her gaze away.

“I promise not to step on your toes.”

“Fine.” Calli rose with a heavy sigh. “Let me know what you work out so I can let Carl know we’re coming.”

“All right, then.” Deanna furrowed her brow as Calli left the office without ceremony. Well that went downhill fast.

Cali, a cowgirl with a painful past and Dee, an office manager with patience and a killer smile are the focus of this story. Fate lends a helping hand in this relationship with a needed business trip coupled with a surprise blizzard. It was a treat seeing Cali begin letting down her defenses and allowing herself to trust her feelings and accept the love flowing her way. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review. ~ ★★★★★  Dee of SNSBAH Promotions & Reviews

The story of Calliope and Deanna is breathtaking and not one of my normal reads. You will not only be wanting to laugh but you will feel their trust issues. I also like how it adds the series Dominion Falls into this book. The details are written well and leave nothing out. It is a very fast paced and easy read that will play through your head like a movie. This series will keep you interested and highly entertained. Each book is placed around a holiday. The title goes along with each holiday. This book Luck of the Cowgirl goes with St. Patrick’s Day. Each book can be a stand alone and will not need to be read in order. ~ ★★★★★  Amanda Hamilton

Tag pulled her closer and caught her other elbow so she had to face him. “I am not about to quit on you. I like my job, and I like you. Probably more than I should.”

“I…What?” Whether she meant to or not, her hands wrapped around his forearms and held tight like she feared falling over.

“It’s terrible. You’re my boss. Kayla, I know that. And I had a crush on you for years before you ever hired me. But getting to know you, the real you, when you let me in, changed that. I don’t think it’s a crush any longer.”

“This isn’t nice,” she whispered. Tears glimmered at the edge of her eyes. When she blinked, several shimmered on her long lashes. “Don’t tease me like that.”

“I’m not teasing.” He released one of her elbows to brush aside a tear with his thumb. “That ‘Hot for Teacher’ line was crass and stupid. It also wasn’t entirely true. Yeah, I’m hot for teacher, but I’m more impressed with who you are.”

“You don’t—you can’t—I…” She took several deep breaths and her eyes fluttered closed. After a moment she let out a choked laugh. “I can’t even form a sentence.”

“You just did.” The breath he’d been holding released when she laughed in reply. “I’m sorry. Maybe I shouldn’t have—”

“Eve and I used to call you jail bait.” In a good sign, she still hadn’t released her grip on his arm, and she hadn’t moved away. “I knew it was dangerous hiring you. I just didn’t realize that it was dangerous because of more than your looks. I think you’re a good guy. I honestly didn’t believe those existed.”

“I’m glad you see me that way. Is there a ‘but’ to that statement?”

“Let me count the ways.” She took a deep breath, and started talking fast. “I’m ten years older; I’m seriously messed up; I don’t trust anyone, not even my friends. I’m also not very good at relationships. Never was. Just because I was married means nothing. In fact, it might have made me worse. And last, but not least, I am your boss and I can’t get sued for sexual harassment. I have no money.”

“Breathe, Kayla.” He released her other elbow and wrapped his arms fully around her. “First off, I told you age doesn’t matter. Second, I know you don’t trust easy, and I know you’re messed up. Third, no relationship is the same. Lastly, I am not going to sue you. If anything I was harassing you a little bit.”

“So you were flirting with me? All this time?”

“You bet your sweet little ass I was.”

“This could be a really huge mistake, Owen. I don’t know that I can handle any more of those in my life.” Her lips drew together in a small ‘O’ and she blew out a long breath.

“It could be, but how about this? It’s not a relationship. We’ll just take it a day at a time and see where it goes. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t.”

“I’m really messed up. So much more than you know. You’ve got so much ahead of you. You shouldn’t be thinking about trying anything with someone so jaded.”

“Maybe I like that you’re jaded.”

Her forehead puckered. “Then you’re messed up.”

“So we’ll be messed up together.” He was rewarded with the sweet sound of her laugh. With one finger hooked under her chin, he tilted her head up. “We’ll try. All I ask is if you have a problem, tell me—and give me the benefit of the doubt.”

“I’ll promise to try.”

“I’ll take it for now.” He bent toward her, close enough to hear her sharp intake of breath when he got close to her lips. A smile took over in the instant before he pulled her into a slow, soft kiss.

Her lips were soft and inviting, drawing him after only a moment’s hesitation. The sweet taste of cotton candy lingered, and he brushed his tongue across the seam of her lips. Her small gasp granted him the chance he wanted and he swept his tongue through her warm mouth.

The cold chill of the evening was replaced with growing warmth as her arms wrapped around him and she relaxed against his body. Her every response to his kiss was tentative, and he tried to keep himself in check, even as each simple brush of her tongue against his drove him crazy with need.

He retreated slowly from the sweet taste of cotton candy and strawberries that was her kiss and pressed his forehead to hers. “I’ve wanted to do that for a long time.”

“The feeling’s mutual.”

“What else have you wanted to do?” Once again he was rewarded with the deep hues of a blush. “God, you’re gorgeous when you blush.”

“No, I’m not.”

“Yes, you are. Why do you think I try to make it happen so much?”

She bit her lips and shook her head.

“At least now I know I’m not the only one with fantasies.”

I loved this book! The characters were so real and likable, and the story so well-written it sucked me right in. I couldn’t put the book down, wondering just how Tag and Kayla were going to get together.

The confusion that had left him with a sad puppy dog expression morphed into pale shock, and then red-faced anger. “I know you’re not blaming Chicago on me.”
“Not exactly.”
“Breaking that off was your idea.”
“You sure as shit didn’t argue with me.”
“What was I supposed to do?”
“I don’t know.” She threw her hands up in the air. “Argue with me, maybe. Object. That is, if you had any objections at all.”
“Of course I did.” He moved closer, but stopped when she backed away for each step he took. “Shit, Pen. It about killed me to watch you walk away for your flight.”
Never in her life had the airline terminal been so long as when she’d walked away that day. She’d known he’d been on the other end, not budging as she made her way to the checkpoint. “But it didn’t. And it didn’t kill me, either. Obviously we made the right choice.”
“Then why does it still hurt?”
“It doesn’t.” Her lips twitched beyond her control at the lie and she spun around to hide the tear that slipped down. “You just think it does because you saw my song. Which you weren’t supposed to do. I asked you for one promise. It didn’t mean anything. It’s a stupid song.”
“Why hide it from me if it means nothing?” His hand closed around her upper arm.
“Because we still can’t do this. We still shouldn’t. This conversation can’t happen. Not now. Not two days before my audition.” She cupped her hands over her face in an effort to form blinders against him. “Please.”
“No. You wanted a damn argument, you’re getting one.”
“You know this would never work. Just drop it. Let me do my audition, argue later.”
“No.” He grasped both of her wrists and pulled her hands away from her face. “Not this time. We’re doing this now.”
“Then my arguments are all the exact same.” With each word her heart jumped and cracked more. “We can’t ever make it work.”
“Why the hell not?”
“You travel all the damn time. During hockey season you’re away more than you are home. If I get this I’ll be in Philly. You could get picked up by a team god knows here, maybe even Canada, or,” she shivered out her disgust, “California. Long distance doesn’t work, especially with how much and how hard we both work.”
“We stayed close when you went overseas. This could work. I’m not buying it.”
“You’re a distraction.”
“That’s the Wicked Witch talking.”
“The Wicked Witch has a point. You are a distraction.”
“Good.”
She backed up a step, but couldn’t get far because he still had her wrists. “Let me go.”
Without argument, he did as she asked. He shook his head. “You need a distraction. You can’t live, breathe, and eat work.”
“You do.”
“No. I go out. And I have you. You’re my distraction.”
“I can’t fail again. I have to do this, Cage. And I can’t do this with you.”
“Tell me it’s what you want. More than anything. More than the songs you’ve been writing. More than those videos.” He tucked a finger under her chin and stepped right up close to her. “More than me.”
“I’ve wanted it since I was eight.” Her voice squeaked, but she didn’t tear her gaze from his. Tears blurred her vision enough that she could lie about the last part of his demand. “I have to do this. I have to see what I can do with this.
You’ve gotten your dream, or at least close enough to taste it. Let me have mine.”
His finger left her jaw fast as though he’d been burned. He went so far as to take a step back. “That’s unfair.”
“Maybe it is, but you’re thinking with your dick.”
“I object to that too. This isn’t about that.”
“It’s always about that. You’re a meathead hockey player.” She took the chance his distance of offense afforded her and scrambled around the bed. “We never should have complicated our friendship with sex. I thought I could handle it, but I couldn’t.”
Across the room next to her pink suitcase, he stood in silence for a few minutes. His hands clenched into fists while he hung his head. “So you do love me.”
“I have always loved you, idiot. You’re my best friend and…” She tried to say more, but all the words tangled in her throat refusing to leave. If she spoke them everything would get worse, so much worse. She couldn’t handle this now;
she should make a break for the door again.
His head snapped up when her voice trailed off. “And?”
She shook her head so hard she got dizzy and had to lower her gaze to the floor.
The words that had choked off her voice erupted in a gut-wrenching sob.
“Son of a bitch, screw this shit.” Before she could even catch her breath or try to speak again he was in front of her. His warm lips closed over hers as he caressed away tears with his thumbs.
Her mind railed against the move, telling her to push him away and leave, but her soul had a whole different idea. All the fears fell aside, and she opened up to him with one demanding swipe of his tongue.
She trembled against her own doubts, and then curved into his hard body eagerly. With a mind of their own, her hands danced up his chest until her fingers were able to bury into his thick curls and tug him close.

He backed her into the wall and hiked her legs around his waist. The last lingering stubborn doubt fled as the hard promise of his desire pressed into her heat and they both moaned.

Logic and doubts would have to wait until the morning.

Beautiful little story about how Penelope and Cage worked through their problems of his career, her dream career, her mother’s interference and the issues of a long distance relationship to a happily ever after. Loved these two characters and the storyline. Just enough challenges to hold the interest and to help Pen grow a strong backbone and stand up for her own desires. ★★★★★ by Dee Archer

Heartstings and Hockey Pucks is one of my favorite in the Lake Point Series. One of the things that I Love about this series is how true to life it is. Outside forces can always color your opinion about things and the way Sarah portrays this is phenomenal. I won’t give the plot away but the twits and turns these characters take felt real and genuine. Would definitely recommend! ★★★★★ by Jessi F
