REVIEW & RECOMMENDATION ~ Brave the Heat (The McGuire Brothers #1) by Sarah Humphreys
Posted by Book Loving Pixies

Blurb:
The only fire he can’t put out…
Jordan McKenna is back in town, and Fire Chief Gavin Maguire’s feelings when he sees her after all these years are as raw as the day she left. Then he was just a kid wearing his heart on his sleeve. Now he spends every day trying to atone for the tragedy he couldn’t prevent.
Is the torch he carries for her…
Jordan’s life has not exactly worked out the way she expected. A divorced mother of two with a failed acting career, Jordan’s biggest concern about coming back to Old Brookfield was seeing her first love. But when a series of suspicious fires breaks out, Jordan and Gavin realize that dealing with the sparks between them may be the least dangerous of their problems.

BLP Review – Tracy
I’m a sucker for a second chance at love story – and one that is packed with action and intrigue as well as a hit of heat and romance definitely piques my interest!!!
Jordan runs back to the place the people that she ran from to escape her abusive father years ago – it broke her to leave it all behind but she made the best of things, even if it meant never seeing the boy she loved. Now she returns to lick her wounds after a divorce and to begin a new life with her two little girls.
The hurt and heartbreak that Gavin suffered when Jordan left years ago is understandable but his need and resolve to take care of her and her daughters, regardless of what happened in their past, was instinctual and nigh on unstoppable.
The story moved along quite quickly and the mystery surrounding the fires was interesting and kept me guessing through the read.
The supporting characters were all really likeable and I’m looking forward to finding out more about Gavin’s family!
‘Brave the Heat’ was a really good read. I liked both Gavin & Jordan from the outset and from the get go hoped that they could rekindle their love and passion – but with a series of fires and mysterious goings on happening all around them I began to wonder if they would get the chance to work things out and get to know each other again!
Sara Humphreys started this new series with, what was for me, a 5* read that I would definitely recommend and I can’t wait to get my hands on more of the McGuire Brothers!

REVIEW ~ HIS TO CLAIM by OPAL CAREW

HIS TO CLAIM
by OPAL CAREW
What if you could have everything you’ve always wanted, but it cost you the life you’ve always known?
Rafe Ranier was my boss and secret crush. A rock musician by night and head of a billion dollar empire by day, Rafe could have any woman he wanted. But I was just the shy secretary he never noticed. For years I obsessed over him, until I finally realized I had to walk away. I needed to leave my secure life behind to discover who I really was.I never expected Rafe to follow me.Now I’m on the road with his band, Savage Kiss, and all my secret fantasies are coming true. But I fear I’ve made a huge mistake, because if I get any more attached to a man I can never truly have, my heart will be broken beyond all repair.

BLP REVIEW – Rebecca
‘His to Claim’ left me lukewarm at best, ‘Swing’ by Opal Carew is an old erotica favourite of mine and some of her previous work is excellent, however, I reviewed ‘Riding Steele’ some weeks back and I was disappointed – unfortunately this one is, in my opinion, the same and I doubt I will return to this author again.
I needed to leave my secure life behind to discover who I really was.
I never expected Rafe to follow me.
Now I’m on the road with his band, Savage Kiss, and all my secret fantasies are coming true. But I fear I’ve made a huge mistake, because if I get any more attached to a man I can never truly have, my heart will be broken beyond all repair.
So here’s the thing; Billionaire plus poor pretty girl is usually one story, Rock God and pretty poor girl another and both incredibly popular in the romance/erotica genre so combine the two and should be a double whammy winner, Yes?
No…….
There were so many issues with these characters and storyline that I was frustrated and fed up when I finished, actually wondering why I just hadn’t put it aside and marked it as DNF.
My Issues:
Rafe is his name, Storm is his Rock God persona, so why does Melanie swap between the two names all the bloody time even when he’s not performing? It was beyond annoying, slightly confusing and juvenile.
The believability factor is stretched for me to accept that a successful band can have a member who hops in and out of the tour at the drop of a hat as he feels like it, even disregarding that any successful musician has usually put in years of time, effort, blood sweat and tears. Also, is any billionaire businessman with an empire likely to have time for both? Even with a brother sharing the empire, I’m just not buying it.
Melanie is described as the shy secretary who has obsessed over Rafe for years so leaves her job to escape the man she can’t have. When he asks her why she left she tells him she wants more time to herself to pursue her dreams. None of this rings true for me. A shy secretary would not turn into a woman who either can’t keep her pants on or doesn’t wear any at all, kisses other guys while supposedly started something with her “obsession” for years (Rafe) and next is having a foursome with 3 men, nope, even the good girl discovering her bad self didn’t make me warm to or believe this.
And for somebody who wants to pursue her dreams, was apparently focused and organised in her secretary role, she makes no real effort to do this – instead waiting around until others suggest and help her. A weak woman who I could happily bitch slap.
And so to the sex, which usually from this author would redeem the book a little, as it did in ‘Riding Steele’, however it was just ‘meh’. Tepid, boring, predictable and I ceased to care.
So for me this book just didn’t work on any level: characters that were too shallow, a story and world that was unbelievable and no amazing sex to make it worth putting up with the rest for. Disappointing.
I cannot finish this review and be honest without also commenting on the price. I am yet again disgusted that any publisher believes $8.89 for a 288 page ebook is acceptable because no way no how is that a reasonable price. J R Ward’s ‘The King’ (Blackdagger #12) is 673 pages for $5.99 and that’s a prime example of value for money. ‘His to Claim’ unfortunately was not from a quality or price perspective.

BLOG TOUR ~ A DESPERATE MAN (Vol #1, The Fantasy) by Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine
Posted by Book Loving Pixies
Fantasies – we all have them. For some it’s their dream job; others want the wedding, the 2.5 kids, the white picket fence. My fantasies are a bit more…depraved.Dark and sinful, they have destroyed relationships and my livelihood, yet I still submit to them like a slave.Sex.For most, it’s a natural expression of love, caring, or lust. But there are those of us who can’t stop once we’ve had a taste. Those of us who don’t want to.And the shame of that never-ending cycle will eat us alive…My name is Evan James, and I am a sex addict.
1. 3 things you never leave home without?
Ella: Phone, wallet, keys
3. Your biggest pet peeve?Ella: Being told to talk in a quieter voice. I get loud when excited. It takes away the fun when interrupted and told to speak softly. ~pouts~
Brooke: Most of mine have to do with people being glued to phones in public, whether it’s during a movie or live theatre, at dinner with friends, or while trying to have a one on one conversation. No one’s in the moment anymore.
4. Favorite male body part?
Brooke: Eyes, always. Can height be a body part too? Because I hate being taller than the guy all the time.
Ella: Nice, broad shoulders.
5. Do you believe in love at first sight?
Ella: No. I think you can find someone extremely attractive, but to love a person, I believe you need to know them.
Brooke: No way. To love someone, you need to love all of them, even the ugly parts they don’t want you to see. And at first sight, they definitely aren’t showing off those flaws.
6. Sex on the first date?
Brooke: For my friends? Absofuckinglutely. I love hearing about it afterward. 😉 But for me, probably not. I’m much shyer than I let on.
Ella: No. And not because I’m a prude, I just never have.
7. If you can be any fictional character for a day, who would you want to be?
Ella: Elizabeth Bennett on her wedding day (and night) to Mr. Darcy.
Brooke: Ohhh, good one, Ella. I’m gonna go total potternerd and say any character in Harry Potter. For the butter beer and magic spells, of course.
8. Write a short letter to Santa Claus and show us how it would like.
Brooke: Dear Santa, I’ve been really good for the last twenty minutes that I’ve been writing these answers, so let’s just focus on that, shall we? P.s. – I’ll leave you dark chocolate bacon cupcakes instead of stale cookies this year if you put our book in everyone’s stockings.
Ella: Dear Santa, Just because my name made it to the top of the naughty list does not mean I participated in any kind of shenanigans. I was a good girl, I promise… well okay, maybe not promise, how about…I think? Love & kisses, Ella

1. (Psychiatry) (often foll by: to) to cause (someone or oneself) to become dependent (on something, esp a narcotic drug)
n
2. (Medicine) a person who is addicted, esp to narcotic drugs
3. a person who is devoted to something: a jazz addict. But I feel, in Evan’s case this is more appropriate…..
addict – To addict originally meant “to award as a slave”; an addict now is a slave to his/her habit, from Latin addictus, which, in Roman law, meant “a debtor awarded as a slave to his creditor.”
I’m a big fan of Ella Frank’s work and was intrigued when I heard she had collaborated with a new author, Brooke Blaine, on a series. When I read what it was about, my interest was definitely piqued!!
We are first introduced to Evan James the morning after a lengthy ‘banging session’ with a mystery blonde, and you get from the 1st chapter that he craves sex in a majorly big way!!!
“The visual mitigated part of the craving deep inside – the one that insisted he reach out and take. And take. And take. Never satisfied. Thirst never quenched.“
Mr James is a sex addict who moves from one ‘warm hole’ to another on a very regular basis, no repeats, no relationships, just a very regular, very much needed release that has him at its mercy!!!! This addiction and his decidedly unwise choice of ‘fixes’, has already cost him his job and it seems he’s extremely close to losing everything else as his addiction continues to spiral out of control!!!
When we think or read about addiction, it’s usually along the lines of drug or alcohol addiction. We’ve seen the devastation, pain and misery that these 2 things alone can cause, but ‘A Desperate Man’ gives us a little taste of what an addiction to sex (be it the actual act, self fulfilment in some way – and jeez, does Evan have some interesting ways to ease the NEED – or his constant thoughts about getting off…)
We find out that Evan’s life is on a very bleak path to self destruction…. and it appears he’s got no way of grabbing on to a life line..
One scene in particular lets you see just how far down the rabbit hole Evan has fallen!
But then life throws him a little twist, hell, more of a bloody curve ball…. in the shape of Blondie…. but will this be his salvation or the final step on his path to self-destruction?!?!?!?
I’m not into spoilers or rehashing a story so all I’ll say is – if you’re looking for a story that’s a little different, a bit dark, intriguing and really quite addictive, pick up a copy of ‘A Desperate Man – The Fantasy’ and fall into the world of Evan James – I’ve got a feeling it’s gonna be quite a ride!!!!! 😉

Jessica Prince Bio:
Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.
Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.
In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time faves. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.
Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

BLP REVIEWS
Rebecca
I have always had a love of books, from a teenager spending hours dreaming make believe at the library to a mom with a penchant for contemporary romance paperbacks to a woman in the age of the electronic gadget who devours paranormal, erotica, contemporary, new adult and any other romance I can download at a sinfully fast rate.
Whether they are my beloved tattered paperbacks or in my favourites on the kindle there are a few authors who I have reread many times through the years no matter my changing tastes – two of these are Jennifer Crusie and Rachel Gibson – Jessica Prince has the same characteristics that I so adore in these two authors and ‘The Picking Up the Pieces’ Series has all the ingredients that make the Crusie and Gibson books so popular – friends, family, humour, chemistry and sex. Real relationships, warts and all, written with sassy wit, a warmth and realness that sometimes, since FSOG, has been sadly lacking in favour of sex with little story and juvenile writing – it must just be that dash of luck missing because Jessica Prince is still a relatively unknown hidden gem and I have no idea why.
‘Pushing the Boundaries’ is the third outing for the Cloverleaf gang and is in my opinion her best work to date. I enjoyed the first (Picking Up the Pieces), loved the second (Rising From the Ashes) and was impatiently waiting for this one because I have loved Trevor as a character since the beginning.
From the very first page I was not only hooked, I was highlighting passages like a woman possessed, laughing out loud and receiving some very weird looks from the people around me! The pace and the laughs do not stop throughout the book, it’s funny, sexy, enjoyable and leaves you with a huge smile while renaming your battery operated boyfriend from Bob to Trevor!
Trevor and Lizzy had an initial attraction when he came to town but as he sowed his oats, the manwhore, Lizzy placed him in the friend category. However he decides this just won’t do as Lizzy is his One and so our story unfolds.
You all know I detest reviews telling me the whole bloody book so I don’t need to read it and while I will try not to do that I can’t help myself, I just have to give you a few teasers ……………………..
. Vegas
. Drunken Weddings
. Mr Bojangles
. Merle and the Manolos
. Trevor and Baby Oil with Romantic Intentions
. The Tattoo
. Social Media Apologies
. Internet Dates
. Nana
All of the above with humour, sprinkled with sex and a warm soft gooey centre.
Ms Prince shows beautifully that even with a healthy lust involved it is a deeper friendship that sustains a relationship and allows it to have a HEA, soul mates can be total opposites as long as chemistry and friendship is in the mix.
A huge part of this series is the banter and interaction between the group of friends, that familiarity of old, the abuse, sarcasm, love and support only good friends and relationships can do. It’s what separates this author and series from so many others, the secondary cast are as integral to each book as the primaries and intersect at many points. I, as you can tell, adore the series and all I can say is if you miss those romances which were as much about the chemistry, tease and friendship as about the fast and furious pounding sex then this is for you, and having put the thought of Trevor pounding in my head again I may or may not be off to source more batteries………………………………

Before picking up Trevor & Lizzy’s book my faves were definitely Savannah & Jeremy….
In saying that, I’ve been looking forward to ‘Pushing the Boundaries‘ and I’m so happy that the book smashed my expectations…. This pair have taken top spot as my fave couple.
Trevor is awesome – hot, very funny and a complete darling at times. We didn’t know an awful lot about him even though we had met him in the first 2 books in the series – he’s a good, loyal friend but a bit of a man-whore was the feeling!! – However there’s a lot more to him than that!!
Lizzy, what a bloomin’ spitfire she is!!! Red headed with a personality and tongue to match! She is funny with it, and isn’t afraid to say it like it is… sometimes without censor!!!
Together they are funny, sarcastic, snarky and downright adorable – oh yeah, let’s not forget to add smokin’ hot to that wee list!!
I didn’t expect Trevor to be as engaging or endearing as he was. His determination and antics to try and ensure he held on to Lizzy were fantastic to read.
Lizzy surprised me a little, though I understood where her reservations came from and how important it was to her that she didn’t lose Trevor as a friend… but damn, at times that girl needed to take off the blinkers and LOOK at what was going on around her.
Unlike ‘Picking up the Pieces’ and ‘Rising from the Ashes’, this couple didn’t have a personal or romantic history – they’re best friends and get on so well, but there were no unsettled issues.
There were numerous laugh out loud moments and more than a couple of’ I could so smack you’ times.. but no angst or real ugly tears (and given that I cry really, really fugly, this was all good with me!!! )
The sense of family, friendship and belonging that we’ve come to expect from this series by Jessica was there and all of our fave characters were present throughout the book.
We’re introduced to a new character and I’m looking forward to finding out more about them!!
The interactions between the boys, especially early in the story had me sniggering and I received more than a few strange looks on the train to work!!
Lizzy’s family are fantastic. Merle & Mr Bojangles – watch out for that pair… comedy gold right there!!!
This is another hit from Jessica and for me, the best instalment of the series to date!
I love the Cloverleaf crew and can’t wait for the next book to catch up with them all again.
If you are a fan of great writing, books that feature family, friendship and a sense of belonging, that are fun reads with a healthy dose of attraction, sex and heat thrown in, then give the ‘Picking up the Pieces’ series a try. You won’t be disappointed!!!
