Up until this point, Sloan O’Malley has been kind of lost in a sea of the strong personalities in her family. She’s the quiet one. The wallflower. The obedient one. All her hard-won calm disappeared when she saw Jude lounging in the corner booth. Lounging wasn’t the right word. He looked like a big cat who was as likely to tear out her throat as purr and rub against her.
Rub against…
She tried and failed to shut the thought down. From there, it was a slippery slope to thinking about what she’d done last night while picturing him.
It was almost enough to make her flee into the kitchen again. Or it would have been if not for the knowledge that Marge had given her a chance, and the woman wouldn’t take kindly to her hiding in the back when there were customers to be served.
Sloan took a careful breath and approached Jude. “What can I get you?”
“I feel like I’m perpetually apologizing to you, but I left abruptly last night and I’m sorry.” He didn’t wait for her to respond. “Come out with me after your shift.”
She blinked. Did he just…“I’m sorry, what?”
“I’m going to take you out. Tonight.” His intense dark eyes never wavered, though she was wondering how she ever labeled them cold. Right now, they were so hot, they were liable to turn her into a pillar of flame.
The only question was if she’d perish in the fire or emerge as something altogether different.
That thought should have scared her, but she’d been afraid for so long. Maybe it was time to do more than think about taking the first step into the future. Maybe she needed to actually put herself into motion. Sloan licked her lips, aware of the way he tracked the move. Everything about Jude was intense. He’d toned it down for her last night, but he wasn’t even trying right now. She shifted her stance, still torn. “I’m not exactly in a good place to date right now.”
He considered her, and she suddenly got the impression that he was choosing his words with care so as not to spook her. “What is it, exactly, that you think I’m asking?”
“I, ah…” She clutched her little notebook to her chest, painfully aware that the handful of diners in the place were blatantly eavesdropping. “I don’t know.”
He lowered his voice to the point where she had to inch closer to hear him clearly. “Let me show you.”
And, suddenly, she wanted to do exactly that. Sloan found herself nodding even though every instinct she had said that Jude was trouble in the worst way. But, whatever he was, he was vitally different from her brothers and father back home. He might seem brutal and dangerous and intense to a criminal degree, but this wasn’t Boston. This was Callaway Rock. No matter how dangerous he seemed, odds were that he wasn’t a man who had skeletons in his closet—literal or otherwise.
That made him safe in a way none of the men she’d ever known were.
Jude’s gaze sharpened. “That’s a yes.”
“That’s a yes.” Her voice was too breathy, too irregular to pass for anything other than nerves, but she didn’t care. If she fell flat on her face, at least she was living.

“Deal’s off.” He stepped around her and crouched behind a mound of snow near the small Nenets outpost. “Goodbye.”
“Hello.” She knelt beside him. Her cold arm nudged his and explosions of awareness rocked his system. Her scent—cloves and vanilla—drifted to him, teasing his senses with each breath. This was getting way out of hand and annoying as hell. “So, we kill them and rob them?”
“No.” Rev gave a long-suffering sigh and pointed. “We aren’t doing anything. I will steal what we need from those supply huts over there.”
Claire gave him some serious side-eye. “What do I do?”
Fuck off? “Stay put.”
He growled then disappeared in a flash. Moving faster than human eyes—and most immortals—could see, Rev zipped to the supply huts and peered inside. Nabbed two thick, fur-lined parkas, boots, rough woolen underclothes, gloves, and hats, then zoomed back to the snow mound. Arms laden with stuff, he dropped it all on the ground, then quickly pulled on his new duds. Not exactly his usual Deadwood meets Dead Zone attire, but it would do for now.
Claire sorted through the things then turned away from him to dress.
Seriously? He shook his head. She was going to be modest now after she’d damned near drawn and quartered him back in the passageway?
“Don’t look,” she said over her shoulder before letting her tattered gown fall to the snow.
Too late.
As she tugged on a pair of wool leggings, Rev couldn’t stop staring at the smooth stretch of her spine, the soft curves of her hips, the globes of her buttocks. Throat dry, he blinked, catching himself just before he reached out to touch what his body so desired.
“You’re peeking, aren’t you?” Claire said, her tone laced with accusation.
“No.” Rev coughed, still staring. The lie had creaked out like a noisy old floorboard. He swallowed hard to clear the constriction of lust from his vocal cords and looked away. “No.”
Torn and twisted, he pulled on his heavy fur parka then wrinkled his nose. The thing smelled like dead caribou with the carcass still stuck inside, but at least it was warm. As he flipped the fur-lined hood over his head, he once again mourned the loss of his cowboy hat.
The Council would pay for that, and so many other crimes.
At last, Claire turned back around to face him. “How do I look?”
Rev opened his mouth, but his sarcastic remark died on his lips.
With her pink cheeks and glittering eyes, she looked…
He frowned. She looked…
Well, she looked like his every female fantasy come to life.
Fuck it all to hell and back.
Cursing his fate, he stalked off toward what he hoped was civilization.
“Wait!” Claire caught up with him and blocked his path yet again. “Here.”
Before Rev could stop her, she reached up and adjusted his hood, her gloved hands cupping his cheeks as she pushed his hair behind his ears then scooted the thing this way and that, nose scrunched. Unfortunately, her touch only notched the heat in his blood higher, making his cock harder than diamond.
He caught her wrists and stared down at her, his icy gaze meant to intimidate. “Stop.”
The answering flicker of want in her eyes, mixed with equal parts fury, only served to enflame him more.
“No,” Claire said.

Excitement flickers in my gut. When I first met my brother-in-law’s older sister, I was amused by her spitfire personality long before I admitted to myself that I found her maddeningly attractive. After I learned she was in her early thirties with two teenage sons, I was blown the fuck away. I’d figured she was five years older than me, tops.
Though I was only twenty at the time, I never gave two shits about the age difference, probably because she’s too young to be my mom. Plus she doesn’t act like any other moms I’ve ever been around. Over the years I started crushing on her. Hard. She’s a fucking riot, and I get a major charge out of messing with her until she’s flustered. There’s nothing better than hearing her spew fragmented sentences back at me and seeing her beautiful face turn a bright shade of pink.
With every family event that brought us together, I’d find something new to like—especially the way she can fill out a bikini, giving a whole new definition to the term “MILF.” Last summer when I stopped by their place in the Hamptons, I found her lounging by the pool and got my first Katie-induced hard-on. Those womanly curves of hers…plump ass, full tits…they’re not something I’ve found on any of the twenty-something girls I’ve hooked up with.
