Three sugars, two creamers.

That’s how you took your coffee every morning at Joe’s Grab ’N Go.

But you don’t remember that.

You don’t remember anything.

Anything, that is, except me…

That day…

And the tragedy that catapulted us together.

CHAPTER ONE

“IT’S MONDAY, AND you know what that means,” Mike said as he cut off Big Bertha’s engine and looked over at me expectantly.

I patted my pants pocket to make sure I’d shoved my wallet inside before we’d headed out this morning, and when I felt the outline of the trifold, I nodded. “Yep. Extra-bold coffee comin’ up.” As I popped open the passenger-side door, Mike’s hand landed firmly on my arm, halting me before I could get out of the ambulance, and I looked back at him over my shoulder.

“It means don’t be a chickenshit, Ollie, that’s what it means.”

Lifting my eyebrows, I glanced around, searching for whoever it was Mike thought he was talking to, and when he read my quizzical expression, he snorted.

“Yeah, that means you,” he said.

“You callin’ me out?”

“Damn right I am.”

I shook my head. “I’m not a chickenshit, and you know it.”

Mike shrugged and let go of my arm. “Fine. Prove it.”

“I can’t do that.”

“You can. You just won’t.”

Yeah, whatever, he had me there. Something always held me back from saying much more than hello to the guy in the fitted chinos and starched collared shirt and tie that I saw most mornings in the coffee aisle at Joe’s Grab ’N Go, and Mike never could resist an opportunity to rib me for it. I never should’ve told him about my crush in the first damn place, but being my best friend as well as my work partner meant we tended to overshare in the time between calls.

“He’s straight, Mike. Leave it alone, huh?”

“You don’t know that for sure.”

I picked up a container of mints and shook a couple into my mouth before tossing it back in the console. “Trust me. I know.”

“You ask him since the last time I saw you?”

Rolling my eyes, I ignored his question and pushed open my door. “You want that coffee or not?”

“Mhmm. The date for you, too.”

“Jesus,” I muttered, slamming the door before he could make any other requests. I could hear him chuckling behind me as he got out to pump the gas. And out of the corner of my eye, a flash of red pulling into a parking spot had my heart beating a bit faster. It was ridiculous that I’d even wonder for a second if I’d see him, since hardly a weekday had gone by in four months when I hadn’t. But that flutter of anticipation still sent a thrill through me, the handful of minutes seeing him every morning the highlight of my day.

That’s it. I need to get my damn life back. Working all these overtime shifts to pick up some extra cash over the holidays—and giving the guys with families some time off—had sent my extracurricular activities into a tailspin. If I didn’t get laid soon, I’d crash and burn. Or, worse, hit on the straight guy.

“Hey, Ollie,” Mike called out, and I paused with my hand on the door to the Grab ’N Go before moving aside to let the woman behind me pass through. When I turned around, a mischievous grin played on his lips as he inserted the gas pump into Big Bertha’s tank and began to hip-thrust.

Oh for the love of—

“And while you’re at it, maybe grab me one of those apple fritters, would ya? And a soda for later?”

So much for New Year’s resolutions, I thought. That had lasted less than a week. Not that I could blame him when it came to the tempting basket of freshly baked goods that sat by Joe’s register every morning—even I had a hard time passing on those. Still, Mike had wanted to lose the twenty pounds that had crept up since Halloween and made me swear I’d keep him in check.

“You sure you wanna do that?” I asked.

Mike looked pointedly over at the red Mazda3 and his smile grew. “Life’s too short to pass on the good stuff, wouldn’t you say?”

That fucker. I shook my head and shot a glare his way, and then I went inside, determined now to buy out the apple fritters and personally stuff ’em down his meddling throat.

“Morning, Oliver,” Joe greeted me from behind the counter where he was ringing up a customer, and I smiled his way before grabbing a handheld basket and heading down the aisle for Mike’s Sprite. I took the third bottle from the front—yeah, I never took the first one of anything—and laid it in the basket as the freezer door slapped shut behind me.

I kept a tight grip on the handle as I took my time walking toward the far aisle, the anticipation building in my gut. Finally, I rounded the corner, and just as he was every day, Bluebird stood in front of the coffee station, refillable mug in hand and somehow looking more gorgeous than I remembered. My memory never did him justice.

I didn’t move as he placed his mug beneath the machine’s spout and hit a button, and I knew exactly what he’d get, the same as every morning: a latte with light foam and three sugars, two creamers.

Today he was dressed in a pair of black slacks, with a white button-down shirt and a midnight-blue tie—always so well put together, from his stylishly tousled dark brown hair, so dark it was almost black, down to his black loafers. A couple of days of stubble covered his usual freshly shaven jaw, and I imagined how it’d feel under my hands as I took either side of his face and pulled him toward mine—

“Dammit!”

Bluebird’s curse shook me out of my stupor as my feet managed to move again, and as I got closer, I saw that the usual brown liquid coming out of the machine was a cloudy white instead.

He let out a frustrated sigh. “Hey, Joe,” he called out to the owner. “Latte machine’s down.”

“Again?” Joe scratched his jaw and then said, “Sorry about that, Reid. I’ll get someone out to fix it today.”

“No problem,” Reid replied, dumping out the hot water from his mug into the tray, and hello, I finally had a name to go with the face: Reid. How was it I’d gone so long without knowing?

I pulled out a couple of large disposable cups from the rack and reached for the coffee pot at the same time as Reid, our fingers brushing each other ever so slightly before we both jerked back. His touch shot through me like an electric jolt to my heart, and the surprise that lit his eyes told me I wasn’t the only one affected.

“Sorry,” he said, and then cleared his throat. “Damn static.”

That wasn’t static, I thought, but I wasn’t about to enlighten him, so instead I gestured to the almost empty coffee pot. “No problem. Go for it.”

“Oh…uh…” He glanced at how little was left and shook his head. “That’s okay. You were first.”

“Nah, go ahead. Something tells me you need it more than I do.”

“You sure?” Reid asked, his forehead creased like he didn’t want to impose, but I wouldn’t have minded him taking the last of the coffee every day, so long as those dark chocolate eyes of his stayed on me.

“I insist,” I said, and then leaned in to whisper conspiratorially, “Besides, I know where Joe keeps the spares. I’ll just make another pot.”

A grateful smile lifted his lips. “Thanks.” Then he poured himself a full mug of coffee and scratched his jaw as he said, “Ever have one of those mornings?”

“All the time.”

Reid looked up at me, and then his eyes shifted down to my name and title patched in on my uniform. Oliver McFadden. Paramedic. “Yeah, of course you do. Paramedic, huh? I don’t know how you do it.”

“Helps that we can filter caffeine through IVs for a quicker hit on bad days.”

He laughed as he ripped open three sugar packets and dumped them into his drink. “I think I’m in the wrong field.”

“What is it you do?”

“I teach music education at Castle Hill.”

“Middle schoolers?” I whistled. “I think I’ll stick with my job.”

“I wouldn’t blame you some days. They’re mostly a good group, but man, there’s a few whose mission is to run off the new teachers.”

“And you’re one of the new ones?”

“Four months running.” He tossed the empty packets into the trash and then held his hand out to me. “I’m Reid, by the way.”

I stared at his hand for a couple of heartbeats before taking it in mine. His long fingers were cool to the touch, unlike my perpetually hot ones. It could be negative fifty outside, and my hands would still be warm. “Ollie,” I said, and then shook my head slightly. “Well, Oliver, but everyone calls me Ollie.”

“Ollie,” Reid repeated, still shaking my hand. “I’ve never met an Ollie before.”

“Mom was a big fan of Laurel and Hardy. I’m just glad she didn’t go with Stan.” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, I realized that was an unnecessary reference because he probably had no idea who the hell Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy were, but Reid surprised the hell out of me by laughing.

“Your mom has good taste. I used to watch their stuff at my nan’s,” he said, and then let go of my hand.

I missed the contact immediately.

Before I could respond, Joe’s gnarled fingers clamped down on my arm as he hobbled in between us and hit the side of the latte machine with his cane.

“I don’t think it’ll respond to a beat-down, Joe,” Reid said, as he stirred two creamers into his coffee.

“Worked once before. By George, I’ll do it again.”

As Joe whacked at the machine, Reid shook his head at the stubborn man. Then he capped his mug and smiled at me. “Thanks again, Ollie. I owe you one.”

“Anytime,” I said, and meant it. “Hope your morning improves.”

“I’m counting on it. Bye, Joe. I’ll leave the money on the counter.”

Joe grumbled what sounded like a goodbye and kept fiddling with the latte machine as I rinsed out the coffee pot and started up a fresh brew.

Two steaming mugs and a bag full of apple fritters later and I was climbing back into Big Bertha, still reeling from my run-in with Reid. It was so unlike me to moon over a guy, for fuck’s sake, but there was something about him that had caught my attention from day one and never let go. Today’s encounter had only served to pique my curiosity. I’d always thought him older, maybe mid- to late twenties, but he said he’d only been at Castle Hill for four months. Maybe that meant he was fresh out of college? Or could be he’d relocated from somewhere. Definitely somewhere still in the South, since he seemed to have the manner of someone who’d grown up with parents who drilled in the Yes, sirs and No, thank you, ma’ams so telling of this part of the country, though his accent didn’t betray much of a twang.

“That has got to be the biggest, dumbest grin I’ve ever seen on your ugly mug,” Mike said, staring at me like I’d grown two heads. “Did you finally do it? Did you ask him out?”

I tossed the bag of fritters and soda into Mike’s lap. “Feel free to choke on those.”

“Ahh, I’m gonna take that as a yes, then. He shoot you down?”

After setting the coffees in the console, I fastened my seatbelt and waited for Mike to get the hint we needed to get moving.

“The hell, man?” he said. “You gonna leave me hangin’?”

I arched my brow in his direction, and when I didn’t say anything, he gave a grunt and started up the rig.

“One of these days, Ollie,” he grumbled, pulling out of the gas station. “You know all my personal shit. See if I spill my guts anymore.”

“You wouldn’t know what to do if you couldn’t talk about Deb twenty-four seven.”

“Hey, it’s not my fault I scored a good one. Just letting everyone know what they’re missing out on.” As Mike slowed down behind traffic, he glanced over at me and waggled his black eyebrows.

“Make sure to do us a favor and hand out barf bags the next time you get started.” I nodded at the bag of pastries in his lap. “And don’t tell Deb I’m doin’ a horrible job of keeping you accountable.”

“Nah, she likes my love handles.”

“Bullshit.”

He laughed and tore into the bag of fritters with one hand, while keeping his other on the wheel. When he’d made me swear last week that I’d keep him on track while he “cut the crap,” I’d thought he was nuts. Even with an extra twenty pounds on his strong six-foot build, Mike was as attractive as ever. Black, close-cropped curls, a permanent tan, and dimples that only seemed to have deepened the past few months.

The hot ones are always straight. At least they are in Floyd Hills, Georgia, I thought, my mind drifting back to the man I always made sure to run into during the workweek. And yeah, I got that straight vibe from Reid too, though even he couldn’t deny the spark that had ignited when our hands had brushed against each other. That wasn’t enough to hang any hope on, though, much as I wanted to.

“His name’s Reid,” I said, breaking up the quiet in the cab, and when Mike’s head jerked in my direction, a fritter half shoved in his mouth, I was unable to keep the smirk off my face anymore. “Teaches music at the middle school.”

As I casually sipped my coffee, Mike’s jaw practically hit the ground. “No shit.” A horn sounded from behind us, and Mike stepped on the gas, shaking his head. “About damn time. What else did you talk about?”

“Nothing. Joe came over to give the coffee machine a concussion, and that was the end of that.”

“Dammit, Joe. Way to cock-block.”

“Nah, he didn’t know.”

“Well, you have an opening now,” Mike said, winking at me. “And that was only a pun if you want it to be.”

“Oh, Jesus. I’ve done it now.”

“What?”

“Created a monster who uses puns against me.”

Mike laughed as I flipped on the radio to drown out any other comments his sugar high wanted to lob out, but when Bing Crosby began to croon about a winter wonderland, Mike groaned and jabbed at the buttons to change the channel.

“I can’t believe they’re still blasting Christmas music in January. Didn’t they get the memo that Santa Claus already came to town, and all he brought me was a damn snow blower? When the hell am I gonna use a snow blower around here? I think my in-laws called in a favor.”

Chuckling, I brought my coffee up to my lips and blew softly, while Mike continued to flip through the stations until a country song began to play. He started to sing along, something about naming babies and dogs, which would normally have me eye-rolling him to death. But since his mouth was now otherwise occupied and he wasn’t digging for more information out of me, I didn’t bother putting up a fight to change the channel. Let him belt out “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” for all I cared. Until a call came in, my mind would be preoccupied by…other things.

A quick tone alert came through the radio, and I punched the music off as a call came through from dispatch.

“Unit 110, please respond Code 3 to the intersection of Mercer and Thomas on a multi-vehicle accident with injuries. Fire responding for possible extrication.”

I picked up the receiver. “Ten-four, Unit 110 en route. ETA less than two minutes,” I said, as Mike dropped the plastic bag on the ground at my feet and flipped on the lights and siren.

“Not how I’d want my day starting out,” he said, cutting through an intersection to make a left on Mercer.

“Saddle up,” I said. “I have a feeling it’s gonna be a long one.”

Traffic going east was already beginning to back up, the roads congested at the height of morning rush hour. Now with the accident up ahead and the cars unable to move to the side, Mike had to pull us into the suicide lane to get by. From the opposite direction, a backup unit, along with two police cars and a fire truck, veered toward the intersection, though it looked like we’d get there first.

I could see the smoke rising up ahead, and as we got closer, it seemed to be coming from beneath the hood of a black four-by-four truck that had smashed into a—

“Oh shit… Ollie…” Mike’s voice trailed off as we both caught sight of the crushed passenger side of the car that had been T-boned. The crumpled car had been no match for the bigger vehicle; it looked like they’d skidded into the middle of the intersection during impact. The car’s hood punched up at an awkward angle with the truck half inside, and broken glass littered the road.

I’d seen the sight so many times before, but never had the breath left my lungs in a rush, never had a faint ringing sound filled my ears, and never had a wild sense of panic seized my chest like it did right then.

Because the mangled car, the one I was responding to, was none other than Reid’s bright red Mazda3.

EXCERPT

I open my door, flip on the lights, and hang back to let Bobby in first.

“What a gentleman.” She smiles over her shoulder.

I give her ass a smack, and she spins around, looking scandalized. “It’s not nice to call names.” I smirk.

“I should have said ‘scoundrel’ instead.”

She’s sauntering into the den, but I catch her arm and spin her back to me. Her hands end up on my chest, like we’re in a movie. Her fingers press my pecs as she smiles up at me. I squeeze her waist, wanting to bend her over my couch and smack her ass again. I get distracted by her luscious mouth…her gently smiling mouth. I want to kiss those lips and feel her breasts against my chest[K1] .

“What?” she giggles nervously.

I stroke her cheek with my thumb. “Nothing.”

Then I close my eyes and brush her lips with mine. Bad idea. I know that. I’m surprised when Bobby groans. Her mouth opens for me, and my tongue strokes inside her. Fuck, her mouth is hot. Her body softens against mine; I wrap an arm around her waist as we kiss slowly…softer first, then forceful. My dick is throbbing, pushed against her belly. I start to rock against her, but then pull back, breathless.

“This okay?”

She laughs against my throat. “Yeah.”

“Sure?”

“You are my boss.”

I look down and find her smiling coyly.

“We shouldn’t do this, right?” I grin.

She rocks her hips against me—and that’s all I need.

LETTER TO THE READER

Dear (Potential) Reader,

There is so much vying for your attention, I’m grateful you’ve read even this far.

I know I’m asking a lot from you.

I’m asking you to take time with a new writer when there are so many great ones already out there.

I’m asking you to take a chance on a new direction in a well-loved genre, in which the wolf is not a vicious beast to be subjugated and feared, but rather the human form is a useful tool for protecting the wilder self.

In this reworking, werewolves fall into two categories: Pack, who must be wolves for three days out of every thirty—self-aware wolves, but not magic, any bullet can kill them. And Shifters, who don’t have to change and so remain human, the apex predator, rather than wolf, the maligned and despised outsider.

Still like any romance, its foundation is in the growing love between two characters: the worldly half-Shifter Tiberius who hates the wolf inside him as bestial and monstrous. And the unworldly Silver, who is fully Pack and believes her wild self to be sacred.

Silver is a runt with a displaced hip when she is a wolf and in a society that determines position by fighting wild, this means she is at the bottom of the hierarchy—the last wolf.  Tiberius, however, discovers real strength in her perseverance and fierceness. For her part, Silver recognizes something about him: that by denying his wild, Tiberius has sown the roots of despair.

But this is not only a love story between two people, it’s also a love story about the Great North Pack, because despite our fascination with lone wolves, it is the pack that really defines this most social of all animals.

I imagined the Great North as something beyond family or community, something tight-knit and loving and brave and frightened. And intensely vulnerable. I imagined, like most embattled societies, the pack would be very conservative, with a traditional culture, a history, a language that was part of its identity. I chose to base that culture loosely (very loosely) on the world of 9th century England, partly because I love the sound of the language of Beowulf. To me, it is gruff and beautiful and haunting, like a wolf’s howl. But also because 9th century England was a place of great insecurity. One never knew when Northmen might show up and destroy everything you loved.

It was the Great North’s first Alpha, Ælfrida, who forced her pack to change. With humans decimating the forests of England, she dragged her pack from the Old World to the vast forests of northern New York, she re-wrote laws in order to allow new wolves to join their bloodlines, she forced her wolves to leave their isolated territories, so that they could learn human ways and protect the Pack using human law.

What results is a society that is both human and decidedly not, both harsh and loving, severe and tender.  The way I imagined wolves fighting daily for their lives would be.

I have loved every minute of researching and writing these books. I can only hope that you will enjoy reading them.

Stay wild,

Maria

EXCERPT

The day of the first waxing crescent of fall is when all of the wolves who live on the Homelands traditionally run the perimeter and make sure that our land is properly marked before the ground freezes and damaged posts become hard to replace.

The entire Pack is wild. Barking and wagging tails, they lick each other and jump around each other, their ferocious jaws open and gentle. They chase mice through windrows, their hind legs scratching leaves into a brightly colored explosion high in the air, so that the pups can twist and turn and catch them in snapping teeth as they spiral down.

Not me. I have to pull on heavy muck boots over thick socks with jeans shoved inside. And I won’t mark our territory the way wolves are supposed to. I will mark it on an iPhone 6 Plus, crammed into the big pocket of a thick orange vest. All because Ti refuses to phase and John doesn’t like it.

“He tells himself he’s human,” John says. “But if he lies to himself, what makes you think he’s not going to lie to us?”

So because I am Ti’s schildere, I have to stay in skin too. Keep an eye on him.

“I mean, what were you thinking?” I ask as Ti fits the Outlast cap over his clipped skull. “When you came to a bunch of wolves asking for protection. That you’d just keep on being a human? Was that your grand plan?”

“I didn’t have a grand plan. What I had was a hole in my stomach, a vague set of directions to my mother’s pack, and a need to survive. I changed long enough to fight; I never thought you’d be asking me to give up my humanity.”

“No one’s asking you to give up your humanity, but if you refuse to admit what you are, it is going to rise up and bite you in the ass.”

“Well, how about you?”

Me? I love changing. I—”

“I know you love changing. You do it all the time. The second Sten doesn’t need your thumbs, you evaporate, and there’s nothing left but clothes hanging from a branch. I may be a crappy wolf. But you… You’re a crappy human.”

I cringe, because he’s right. I’ve never been happy in skin, but then those stupid fire fairies burrowed into my body all those days ago, and that spark has caught fire and burns so fierce that now when I walk beside him and hear his quiet, low voice or look into those gold-flecked black eyes, my tendons strain and my muscles coil and my lungs open up and my blood beats hot and fast. The only way I know how to deal with need is to run hard and far until I collapse, unable to feel anything at all.

A brindle pup barks worriedly at my feet. All of the other wolves have disappeared, fading like a whisper in the woods.

“I know, Leelee. We’re coming.”

“She’s going with us?” Ti asks.

“We’re supposed to take her along. Help her learn the farther reaches of the Homelands.” Leelee scampers on ahead, leaping awkwardly over a huge downed log and sliding down the other side, her fur covered in the sooty brown decay.

Ti clears it in one stride and stands close, not helping me exactly, but I know if I falter, his big shoulder is there for me to grab on to. I make it by myself, but I appreciate his silent gesture.

Leelee watches, her head cocked to the side, as I take a running jump over one of the numerous small, mucky streams that crisscross our land. I slip down the other side, my foot sinking into a soft bruise in the moss. She yips and worries, waiting for me to pull my boot out with a dull sucking sound.

I lift her up and give her an open-jawed kiss on her ear, but she sees a squirrel and won’t stop squirming until I set her down.

“No farther than the Stones, Leelee.”

When we finally catch up, she’s clambering over the variously sized rocks that form rough circles around the ancient central stones. Over the years, the circle has encroached farther and farther into the forest, surrounding the trees.

Leelee marks one of the stones.

“What is this?” Ti asks.

“It’s, um…the Gemyndstow? The memory place? But we just call it the Stones.”

“Like a graveyard?”

“Graveyards are for bodies, aren’t they?”

“Yes.”

“So, no. Coyotes eat our dead. That’s why we call them wulfbyrgenna. Wolf tombs. The stones are only for wolf names and the date of their last hunt so that we can remember.”

When Ti crouches down and looks at one near the front, Leelee runs up to him and looks too, trying to figure out why it is so interesting.

As soon as he stands, she marks that one too.

An ill-advised squirrel runs across the outer rim of the Stones, and Leelee turns quickly to run after it, the wind tickling her fur and the scent in her nose. I know that feeling of taking it all in—moldering pine needles, owl pellets, borer beetle, tree sap, two-year-old porcupine den, sassafras bush—until the scent of prey hits you right in the back of the throat and everything tenses and you chase, even if your tummy’s little and full and all you really want is for the thing, whatever it is, to escape so you don’t have to eat it, but still you can’t help but hunt.

She peels off after her squirrel, looking behind to make sure we’re watching.

The squirrel chitters at her from the safety of a maple. Ti stares, his hands fisted by his sides, as Leelee scampers and bounds and falls on her back and twists her little legs in the air, her belly dotted with leaf litter. A tiny furrow cuts through his usually impassive brow, and his mouth, while still tightly closed, turns down a little at the corners. His wild—that seductive scent of crushed bone and evergreen—radiates thicker now, and when I touch his arm, he jolts as if from a waking dream and blinks down at me, looking in this moment like a lost boy.

BLOG TOUR ~ THE SCHEMER by Avery Flynn

Tyler Jacobson has a plan for everything—except how to handle his completely annoying, utterly frustrating, and totally sexy upstairs neighbor. He couldn’t care less if Everly Ribinski thinks he’s equally irritating—until he discovers she’s the only one who can help him land a business deal that will finally make him feel like he’s more than just a guy from the wrong side of the tracks.

Color him shocked when Everly refuses to help, insisting she should have run him over in the parking garage when she had the chance. Harsh. But possibly deserved. Tyler may have spent the last few months reveling in annoying the fiery gallery owner with a dark past, but he’s got secret leverage she can’t refuse.

If only one meeting didn’t turn into a fake date that turned into more. Way more. Like naked and hot as hell more.

The last thing either of them wants is to catch feelings for someone who is so obviously not their type.
Good thing that will never happen.
Right?

USA Today bestselling romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: February 5, 2018

Blurb

Up on this mountain, she’ll play by my rules.
My obsession. My Temptation. My Captive.

When I left life as a hitman for the Russian mob years ago, I never wanted to look back. I took the millions I’d made doing their dirty work and built my retreat up on Blackthorn Mountain, away from everything.

But a flash wildfire brings her to my front door, and from the moment I lay eyes on her, I know one thing: she’ll be mine.

Gorgeous, sassy, innocent, untouched…and my prisoner. No one can know I’m here, so she stays. I’m keeping her.

Life as a contract killer and now as a rough mountain man has turned my heart cold. I should keep a sweet girl like her away from me. But once I put my hands on her tempting curves and once I taste those sweet, innocent lips, I want nothing else than to keep her as close as possible.

I’ve saved her from the fire, but if we aren’t careful, we’ll both get burned.

Because my past isn’t done with me. The mob I walked away from years before thinks they can use Chloe to get to me, but they’re dead fucking wrong

Because up here, I’m king, she’s my mountain queen, and I’ll storm heaven and hell to keep her safe.

Chloe’s got a fight in her, but once I lay my hands on her, I’m never letting her go.

Just so we’re clear, this book is completely out of control, and reality has left the building. If you’re looking for realism, this ain’t it. BUT, if you’ve got a hankering for a growly-alpha-caveman hero that will stop at nothing to claim what’s his, then you’re probably going to devour this book ;). Safe, no cheating, and HEA guaranteed.

What could be in the memory box that has Kimberly Davis afraid of opening it?

When Kimberly and her friends were young, they started a memory box to open once they all turned 30 years old. It’s her 30th birthday, but she has a bad feeling about what’s inside. Images of beer bottles, dancing with a stranger, and a bare-end walking away flash before her.

How bad can it be?

The box is finally opened. Their memories spread out in front of them, and only one last item in the box.
A marriage certificate!

Oh no!

After discovering the stranger, Ryan Calvin, never annulled the impulsive marriage, Kimberly has no choice but to put an end to it. Against her brother’s legal advice, Kimberly takes the divorce papers to Pottersville, Indiana.

Easy peasy, right? Not exactly!

Ryan is out of town. His brother Alex, has offered her a place to stay until Ryan’s return. Alex is a single father, and generous to his guest. Oh, did I mention he’s hot and Kimberly can’t help but notice? She’s in danger of falling for him. He’s affectionately willing to catch her. What could happen when Ryan finally returns?

Excerpt

Alex didn’t mean to eavesdrop but, when he passed Kimberly’s room and heard her on the phone, he paused to listen. The conversation was about him. That much, he knew. He wondered what her friend suggested and wished he heard both ends of the conversation. Alex didn’t have time to think about what his guest was saying because he heard her say goodbye. He quietly slipped into the living room and acted like he’d been there all night. “Hey, there you are,” he welcomed her when she walked into the room. “I was just thinking about watching a movie. Care to join me?”

“Do you have popcorn?” Kimberly teased as she sat on the other end of the couch.

“Only if you help me,” Alex joked. He didn’t need her help in the kitchen, but the thought of them working side by side, in the small space, excited him. She poured a couple drinks while he worked his magic on the stove. As the corn popped, he turned to her and asked, “Why do you want a divorce?”

Kimberly gave him a confused look and then shrugged her shoulders. “Because we were drunk and young. I have no idea who Ryan is. How can I stay married to a stranger?”

Alex didn’t say anything for a while. He put the popcorn in the bowl and seasoned it while Kimberly took the drinks into the living room. When he joined her, he continued the conversation. “I didn’t mean it like that. Are you engaged or something?”

“What?” Kimberly’s laugh sounded like she was nervous. “No, what makes you think that?”

“I don’t know,” Alex began smiling. “Isn’t that what they do in movies? Girl gets engaged, finds out she’s still married, and sets out to end it.” She was looking at him but not saying a word. “Romantic comedies.”

Kimberly couldn’t keep a straight face any longer. He was being serious; thinking she was there for those reasons. She started laughing which caused him to laugh. “Nothing like that.” She assured him.

“I don’t believe in divorce,” he told her.

“Neither do I,” she said, but Alex smirked. “Under normal circumstances,” she added. “Ryan and I don’t know each other. It should have been annulled years ago. This is different.” He reached over and tapped her knee, and nodded, letting her know that he understood.

“So, you’re single?” He noticed her rosy cheeks and the way she took a deep breath. Alex felt flushed himself but had the advantage of a five o’clock shadow to hide it. When she didn’t answer right away, Alex cleared his throat and said, “So what would you like to watch?”

“Sweet Home Alabama.”

They laughed. Alex knew she was joking and picked something else out instead. He flipped through the options and noticed her inching her way closer to him. The thought of putting his arm around her crossed his mind, but he held back. Getting close to Kimberly would only cause trouble.

When the movie was over, Alex put the television on mute and turned towards Kimberly. “What do you do for a living?”

“Social media consultant and online management,” she answered.

“What is that?” Alex knew what that was. He only wanted to listed to her sweet voice speak to him.

Kimberly stated to explain what she did but hesitated. “Wait, do you have the internet out here?”

“I don’t have a clue what you’re talking about, ma’am.” Alex laughed and continued in a hick voice, “Around here, we rely on nosey neighbors to keep us informed of all the gossip.” Then he pointed to a desktop computer and he threw a kernel of corn at her to make her laugh again.

Kimberly’s face turned red once more. “What about you?” She questioned in return. “You run this farm by yourself?”

“It’s a family farm,” he reminded her. “When Ryan isn’t here, I’m usually running it alone. Sometimes, I hire local guys to work for a few weeks at a time; usually around harvest.”

Kimberly looked like she forgot about Ryan. He watched her adjust her legs as she sat on one. If he didn’t know any better, Alex would think she was intrigued. “Do you have a big family?” She questioned him.

Alex frowned. “No, not anymore.”

Kimberly cocked her head signaling for him to explain that.

“Have an aunt and uncle on my father’s side of the family, but they moved to Florida years ago. I rarely hear from them.” He paused, figuring out what she’d like to hear. “My dad died when I was twelve. Mom, uh, just a few years ago. Remember?”

Kimberly nodded. He mentioned it the night before. “It’s just you and Ariel,” she said out loud without thinking.

“And Ryan,” Alex reminded her with a devilish grin. His face neared her as they wrapped up the conversation. Her lips were close. It took all his strength not to lean in and kiss them.

“And Ryan,” she whispered with a sense of regret in her voice.

NEW RELEASE ~ Thanks Fur Last Night (Beast Sized Anthologies #4) by Eve Langlais, Milly Taiden & Kate Baxter

Thanks Fur Last Night by Eve Langlais

Enter a world of smoldering shifters in this scintillating anthology headlined by New York Times bestselling authors Eve Langlais and Milly Taiden with brand-new, never published novellas!

Bearing His Sins
Cole should have killed Anja the moment he realized she was his mate. Instead, he let her live and now they’re on the hunt, chasing the morons who think they can force her to marry another man. Like hell. And while this shapeshifting bear might have his share of sins, he’s not going to let little things like murder and mayhem prevent him from having the woman meant to be the keeper of his heart.

Bought by the Bear

Josilyn Martinez just needed the money to help raise her nephew. That’s it. There’s no other reason she would take a job posing as a shifter’s mate so he can assure his grandmother he’s settled down. There’s no reason to stay at his place so they learn “more about each other.” And there’s definitely no good reason she should get involved with the hard, hot, and handsome shifter that’s hired her.

Xander just needs a fake mate for a week to get his grandmother off his back. But what’s a bear shifter to do when the impostor mate he hired turns out to be his actual mate? All sweet, luscious curves and a heart of gold, Xander’s not going to let his mate get away. Now all he has to do is show her that they belong together, one kiss and touch at a time…

The Alpha and I

Devon Kincaid is happy with her new life in Lowman, Idaho. Her little bar on the outskirts of the tiny, isolated town is doing well, and she’s not even interested in finding a man. But when she finds a bleeding man―a hot, hard, handsome, naked bleeding man―in the snow one night, Devon brings him home to care for him. He’s definitely not like any man she’s ever met before, but what she doesn’t realize is that he’s not just a man…

Liam Murphy isn’t simply a werewolf. He’s the Alpha. In a heated battle with a deadly bear shifter, he’s moved his pack to the Sawtooth Wilderness in order to draw danger from them. He was hoping to escape his problems―but the last thing he expects to find in the isolated Idaho wilderness was his mate. Fragile and unfamiliar with the violent supernatural world, the only way he can protect Devon is to make her what he is: a werewolf. He only hopes that in the process convincing her to enter fully into his world, that he doesn’t drive away the one woman he can’t live without.

“You’re a killer?” Anja didn’t move, but she knew her grandmother heard.

“I prefer the term ‘assassin.’ Or, if you really want to make it sound fancy, ‘licensed and bonded mammalian exterminator.’ A bit of a mouthful, kind of like me. Personally, I like the title ‘Reaper’s right hand,’ except I’m left-handed, and I don’t like the idea of that Reaper fellow getting credit for my kills.”

Anja isn’t sure what to do when she ends up with an assassin eating her grandmother’s home cooking.

He’s the least of her worries though. Read about Anja and Cole in Thanks Fur Last Night

Thanks Fur Last Night FAQs

What did you enjoy best about returning to the Beast Sized Anthologies?

I love these furry anthologies because each story is bite sized, fun and I get to share a book with some of my friends.

What should we expect in this book?

I don’t know about the other ladies, but mine is a funny action adventure. He is an assassin, and she is…a surprise.

Why are readers are going to love this book?

Funny, a bit over the top and sexy. All the elements needed for an enjoyable few hours.

What is your favorite scene in this book?

In the beginning, when the hero gets to meet her grandma. That whole scene is hilarious.

Is this book part of a series?

It is technically a spin off from the Alpha’s Mate. But can totally be read on its own.

FAQs about Eve

Can you tell me a little about yourself?

My name is Eve Langlais and I am a Canadian writer currently residing in our nation’s capital, Ottawa. I’ve been writing since 2009, and published since 2010. Initially, I began my career writing for four small e-presses, but have since then moved on to self-publishing, as well as signing a deal with St. Martin’s Press. I’ve had several of my indie titles hit theNew York TimesTodaylists, which was really exciting.

What kind of books do you write?

I am a romance writer, who tends to flip between science fiction romance and paranormal. I love to let my imagination go wild and have a blast creating new worlds and rules for my creations. Readers often comment (and giggle) because of my heavy use of humour and sarcasm in my stories. I love a little laughter, or in some cases a lot lol, with my romance.

Is writing your full time job?

I am a full time writer at this point in my career, working anywhere from 60 plus hours, 7 days a week, but I love it.

What was the first moment you knew you wanted to write?

When I was a kid, I loved to scribble down stories. I excelled in my creative writing class and had dreams of writing something epic. Then real life interfered for 20 years lol. But, I think that break gave me the life experiences I needed to make my stories believable – hot.

How did you get started writing romance novels?

I began writing on a dare from my husband. It happened just after Christmas in 2009. In my mid thirties, a mom of three, and working from home as customer service rep and webmistress, I turned a lot to books for entertainment. I was a happily ever after junkie, and I was tired of reading stories that went in directions I hated. My husband dared me to do better and I hate it when he wins. Needless to say, more than 100 books later, he’s very proud of himself for challenging me.

What is your approach to writing?

When it comes to writing, I am a pantster. I don’t outline and tend to let the characters tell me where the story is going, although I do have notes about my characters and the world scattered all over my desk. It’s a fun way of writing because they take me in directions I never expected.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

I am very structured when it comes to sitting down and getting words written. I write Monday to Friday starting from just after 8am until at least 11 am or noon. If I’ve not hit my word count goal of the day, then I write again after lunch. My weekly goals are usually to get 15-25K words written. I’m very regimented in that respect lol.

Where do you get your ideas?

Anything and everything can influence my brain lol. While I prefer pure silence when writing, if I’m in the car and hear Styx Mr. Roboto, I totally want to go home and write cyborgs. Seeing animals on television, especially silly ones, makes me want to write shifters. It doesn’t take much to fire my imagination.

For me it’s the odd things that will strike me and make me go what if… For example, my idea forAn Alpha Purrsabout after a haircut. For some reason the oddest idea popped in my head. I wondered what would happen if a hairdresser cut a lion’s mane? Because in my world, lions are so vain, lol.

What do you like to read?

My first author crush was Stephen King. I gobbled up his early work like a starving reader, and then I discovered Johanna Lindsay and went on a romance reading rampage. She was the one who made me discover Science Fiction romance with Warrior’s Woman.

My dear friend Darynda Jones writes with amazing humor. The team of Ilona Andrews are autobuys for me as well because they have taken their world building to such a fantastic level.

If I’m looking for great urban fantasy, I go to Jim Butcher. Mystery is Tess Gerritsen. Hot hunks written by someone else, Laurann Dohner.

Where do you see yourself and your characters in five years?

I see dozens of new faces added and new worlds. I see my ass still parked in a chair while the voices ride me making sure I tell their story.

Do you have a favourite amongst all your characters, world or series?

Lucifer, that big bad devil from my Hell series is probably my all time favorite. As to why? He’s evil. He doesn’t even pretend to be good, and his unwilling affection for his family is hilarious. In general, he is so entertaining and wickedly lovable you can’t help yourself.

Which of your books would you recommend as a starting point for new readers?

There is no one perfect book for everyone. It’s why I write diverse series from aliens, to cyborgs, to shifters, to demons… Some of them are chock full of humor (Alien Abduction,Lion’s Pride), others have a strain of darkness to them (Pack,Point). What a reader chooses should be about what caught their eye. Find something that seduces the curious reader in you.

What can readers expect when they open one of your books?

I can promise it will be fun, probably humorous and most of all romantic, because I love a happily ever after.

What have been some of your fan-favourite characters?

The favorite shifter would have to be Boris the moose. He is a grumpy fellow with a big rack, but despite that, gun toting Jan, who loves to wear heels and pearls, still fell for him.

And then there was Lucifer who began as a secondary character in my Hell books but kept stealing the show. Writing evil characters is always fun.

Praise for Eve Langlais

The author pairs her heroes with a type of heroine one doesn’t encounter very often in mainstream print or even digital-first romances. It’s part of her brand and I’m thankful she consistently provides readers with such an alternative, especially in a science fictional setting. – Sci Fi Romance Quarterly
