EXCERPT

My hands wander down to his forearms. “You want me now today, or forever? Or maybe a time in between those two?”
“Always. Always, Fast Lane. I want you forever. This is hard for me, too. Sharing isn’t a word in my repertoire.” It shouldn’t be in mine either. His gaze darts to the water on the side of my house. My island doesn’t feel as safe as it did five minutes ago.
Focusing on the task at hand, I lean my head against his chest. “I need to break up with Dax.” I don’t need to explain. I owe it to Dax to keep the explanations for him. I feel Cody’s hand in my hair and his kiss on the top of my head.
“I’m sorry for this.” His voice is low and coiled with control. “I’d deal with it if I could. I’d make the pain go away if there was a way.”
I shake my head. “It’s my fault. I never stopped loving you, Cody. I should have. My, God I should have.” I look up to meet his gaze, ice blue, so much like Dax’s.
“He saved me, but you own me.”
With the hands that are still in my hair, he brings my face up to meet with his, our lips touching in the barest flutter of a kiss. Not enough to taste him, but enough to know he’s mine right back. “Be mine again. All mine.” There’s that word again. I think of Dax.
“That’s the problem,” I say, my lips touching his as I speak. “I’ve never not been yours, Cody.” He kisses me madly, profoundly, passionately. Cody takes my hips and pulls me against his erection. It throbs into my stomach, causing my core to clench with desire. Every nerve ending in my body fires. I feel tingly. I feel warm. I feel him.

Author Note

This series was inspired from start to finish by the song “Unforgettable,” sung by the late great Nat King Cole and his daughter Natalie. I am so saddened by the untimely death of the beautiful Natalie, who passed away while I was doing final edits on the series’ final installment. I hope while you read it you will hear them singing the memorable words together in heaven. RIP. We all have loved ones near and dear to us who we will never forget. As my heroine, Zoey Hart, learns in her spiritual journey they will always live in our heart…and that’s what makes them unforgettable.

To celebrate the release of Unforgettable 3, I am making the first book in the series FREE to all Kindle readers from January 13 to 15. On January 16, the price goes up to $3.99. I hope you enjoy Brandon and Zoey’s fairy tale Hollywood romance.

Excerpt

“What are you fucking doing?” I cry out.

“Zoey, you’ve touched me everywhere, but the place you’ve touched me deepest is here.”

Still pinning me to the wall, Brandon cinches my right arm by the wrist and slips my hand between us, pressing it hard against his heart. I feel it pound beneath my palm. Perhaps, I should tell him to feel my heart. The shattered chambers. The shards.

“Let me go, you asshole!” I beg instead.

His mouth responds with a crashing, fiery kiss that blazes through me. Oh my God. I want him. No, I don’t. Yes, I do! This cruel game with a burning tightrope has no safety net. It threatens to destroy me. His rigid length singes my flesh right through his robe and my clothes. A ring of fire circles my core, and the white-hot heat radiates from my head to my toes. I succumb to the urgency of his mouth on mine with a moan.

He bites down on my lower lip, parting it, and then plunges his warm tongue inside my mouth, sweeping across the vessel, deepening the kiss with my submission. His other hand slips beneath the waistband of my uniform and makes its way to my wetness, caressing my slick cleft and aching clit. Flames lick my skin. I wriggle beneath his weight and moan louder. Oh God! What the fuck am I doing? Why am I letting him do these things to me? Unable to resist, I squeeze my eyes shut until I’m seeing stars.

Finally, he pulls his scorching lips away and releases my right hand. “Oh baby, I want you so fucking badly,” he breathes into my mouth. “More than anything.”

The words on my tongue waver between “Fuck you” and “Fuck me.” Taking a deep tormented breath, I do something I’ve never done before. I slap him hard across his face, leaving my handprint on his cheek and an echo in my ear. He rubs his stubble-lined jaw while I rub my stinging palm.

Tears scald the back of my eyes. “That’s all you’re getting from me. Whatever sick, cruel game you’re playing, Brandon, needs to end. I let you take everything. My heart. My soul. My body. My mind. But the one thing you’re not going to take is the last ounce of my dignity.”

“I’m sorry, Zoey. I couldn’t help myself.”

Neither could I.

AP- Excerpt.jpg

I found myself in a dense forest, surrounded by a menagerie of animals as I ran swiftly through the trees. There were three black bears behind me, but I didn’t feel as though they were chasing me. It felt like they were urging me forward. To my left was a lioness, her fur rubbing along my legs every once in awhile as she tried to speed me along. And to my right was a sleek, gray wolf, whose dark eyes gleamed in the moonlight.

My heart raced, but not from exertion—it was from excitement. With a profound certainty, I knew someone was waiting for me around the next corner. Someone who was everything to me. I dug deep and sped up, running faster than I’d ever moved before, desperate to reach him. When I rounded the bend, another black bear was there, and it felt like I’d been struck by lightning.

Electricity crackled along my skin and arced from my fingertips to the bear’s chest in a spark of white light. Suddenly, he shifted from bear to man; a completely naked man with every tanned inch of his six-foot-two frame exposed to my sight. A swirl of wind ruffled his jet black hair before sweeping toward me and pushing me forward. His whiskey-colored eyes were filled with wonder as he stared at me. I stumbled slightly in my rush to reach him and he leapt forward to catch me.

As soon as his fingertips touched my skin, I felt my magic blast through me with more power than I’d ever experienced before. It flowed from me to him, a warm glow of light surrounding us. I didn’t know his name or who he was, but I felt a certainty to the depths of my soul that he was the person I’d been searching for. A vortex of wind wrapped around us, lifting us both off our feet for a moment, and I felt another surge of power deep within myself.

When he reached the ground again, I wrapped my hands around his biceps to steady myself and almost jerked away at the searing heat of his skin. Tearing my gaze from his, I glanced down and watched as a mark appeared around the bicep of his right arm. It spread slowly across his skin, similar to a tribal tattoo, with the phases of the moon woven into it. They were familiar to me, the same shapes I saw every day—the symbols on the charms hanging from the bracelet on my left ankle.

It was then I realized who this man was. He was the one person in the world the Goddess intended to stand by my side—my consort.

I absolutely adore reading – always have and always will. My friends growing up used to tease me when I would trail after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. If I have downtime, odds are you will find me reading or writing.

I am the mother of two wonderful sons who have inspired me to chase my dream of being an author. I want them to learn from me that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it.

When I told my mom that my new year’s resolution was to self-publish a book in 2013, she pretty much told me “About time!”

EXCERPT

“Fuck you, Zeek! I am an officer of the law, and you!” I point at him, words starting to slur. “You’re a criminal, one everyone around here seems to pussyfoot around—”
“Everyone except you,” he interrupts. “Why aren’t you afraid of me?” he whispers, his head leaning back, eyes gleaming down at me. His question is laced with so many emotions, and I’m not sure how to answer.
Truth is, I am afraid of Zeek. I’m afraid of him for so many reasons.
“Who says I’m not? You’re a bad guy, Zeek,” I mutter. Citizens and law enforcement are conditioned to fear him, what he represents.
He steps forward, his hands slipping into his jeans pockets.
“I could be a good guy,” he whispers, looking at me as if he’s trying to tell me something.

One bad biker. One gorgeous sheriff.
One intense biker romance.

Excerpt

She took a deep breath. When that didn’t work to calm her nerves, she took a sip of the amber liquid. There was no burn. It was smooth and sweet on her tongue.

“Did you see anyone at the scene? Any other vehicles?” she asked.

“No. I drove up and saw the churned up mud and broken light covers where you hit the guardrail. If it hadn’t been for that—.” He stopped to take a sip of his own whiskey. When he continued, his voice was deeper, gruffer. “You drive too fast, Mia. You always have. You hit that curve like a bat out of hell. If I hadn’t come along, hadn’t realized you’d been on that road right in front of me, you would have died there.”

Her blood ran cold. He said it so matter of factly. It was true. She knew that. But it didn’t change the fact that she hadn’t been alone on that road, and her car hadn’t gone into the creek without someone else forcing her over the edge. “I do drive too fast… but I only swerved and lost control because of the other car, Bennett!”

“I know,” he said softly.

“It was a big black SUV… I’m not really sure what kind. With all those bars on the front of it,” she continued on, not quite processing that he’d agreed with her.

“The deer guard.” The words were supplied in an even tone, no censure, not disbelief.

“Yes,” she replied adamantly. “I rounded the bend and it was parked in a way that it blocked both lanes!”

“I believe you,” he said. “You don’t have to convince me that it happened that way.”

She stopped then, drew a deep breath and stared at him in stunned disbelief. “You believe me?”

“Yes. I saw the glass and plastic where your headlights got busted in… Directly in line with where your back wheels went over the edge. It’s not possible for you to have simultaneously damaged the front and back end of your car in a single car accident before the rollover.”

“It was deliberate,” she said softly.

“Maybe they just panicked,” he offered.

“I need another drink,” she said.

Bennett refilled her glass.

“Someone tried to kill me, Bennett,” she stated it emphatically. “I’m not imagining that… they waited for me on that road!”

“Why would someone do that, Mia? No one has any reason to hate you that badly,” he shot back before draining his glass.

“You do,” she finished quietly.

His eyes widened for a second in surprise, before narrowing in anger. “You come into my fucking house and accuse me of something like that?”

She shook her head. “No. I wasn’t accusing you… I know you’d never do anything like that. But it’s true, Bennett… you do have every reason to hate me.”

He settled back against the counter, arms crossed over his chest, muscles rippling and bunching beneath the open plaid shirt. “I don’t hate you, Mia… I’ve tried to. I’ve tried to every damn day of my life, and I just can’t.”

She set her glass on the counter. Her hand was trembling too much to hold on to it. “Do you need to hate me, Bennett? Clearly whatever was between us hasn’t kept you from having a very active love life!”

He leaned his head back against the cabinet door and stared up at the ceiling as if praying for strength, or possibly patience. “That’s not how it works. I wasn’t the one who stood you up.”

She glanced beyond the kitchen and into the living room, where new and decidedly feminine curtains hung over the window behind the couch. “It looks like you’ve managed okay… You and Lacey.”

His eyebrow shot up. “You really wanna go there? We’ve not been together for ten years! Should I have waited, Mia?”

“No,” she said quickly. “And I didn’t mean it like that, Bennett! … Yes, I did, but I know I don’t have the right. I’m jealous and not just because you’re with someone else, but because…You’ve made a life for yourself. And… I’m still doing the same thing I was at eighteen. Taking care of Mama, handling the distillery tours and—.” She stopped speaking abruptly, the unfinished words hanging between them.

The silence was heavy, laden with the anticipation of what went unsaid between them, the tension building until it was unbearable. It was Bennett who finally snapped. “And what, Mia? For the love of God, just say it!”

“And thinking about you. All the time,” she replied. “At this point, I should be nothing more than a distant memory to you, and you’re on my mind all the time.”

He smiled, but there was no humor in it. It was a bitter and self-deprecating twist of his beautiful mouth. “Not so distant. I see you in town. I see your car speeding up and down this road. I hear your name whispered by every gossip in town as I walk past them… People in this town remember everything. They remember us. And so do I.”

She had memories of her own. His mouth on hers, his hands on her body. They’d been greedy then with the newness of it all, just a couple of inexperienced kids with more hormones than skill. Of course, Bennett was more experienced now, but more than that, the heat that burned between them then was still there. Dating wasn’t a part of her life. There was no time for it. With taking care of her mother and her job at the distillery, it was almost like time had stopped for her that summer. He’d gone on with his life, at least somewhat, and she was in the same rut she’d always been in.

The mistake she’d made in coming there was glaring. Panic hit her, sinking into her gut like a twisting knife. Seeing him, being close enough to him to smell him, to touch him, it was an epic error in judgement on her part. Nothing in this world could hurt her as much as the man in front of her. The first time had been bad enough. To go through it all again when the outcome couldn’t be any different was just more than she could contemplate. “I should go,” she managed. “Coming here was a mistake.”

She whirled and headed for the door and was halfway there when he caught her. One of his large hands snaked out and captured her undamaged wrist, closing over it and tugging her back to him. “You’re right. I know you’re right… and I don’t fucking care.”

With her chest close to his, her head just below his chin, his arms slid around her. It was like breathing, the most natural thing in the world. She leaned into him, savoring the heat, the hard press of him against her. “I cannot even count the number of ways in which this is a bad idea… There’s no way this ends well, Bennett.”

“Never say never,” he advised softly.

“Highly unlikely, then,” she amended.

“Lots of things are unlikely, oh wise one. Doesn’t mean they can’t happen.” His voice was little more than a deep murmur, his lips brushing against her forehead as he spoke. He held her gently, tenderly. It was something she’d missed so much it wasn’t even possible to put into words. Even then, the heat was there, arcing between them, taking on a life of its own.

“Like what?” she asked. Her skin burned beneath his hand like he’d set her on fire. With nothing more than a touch, it raged for him.

“You… standing here in my kitchen for starters.”

“I’m blaming my lapse in judgement on painkillers.” The statement was flippant, but the quavering of her voice and the slight hitch to her breathing told the truth. There was nothing casual about what was happening between them. It was life or death.

“Why is it a mistake?” he demanded as he pulled her a little closer to him.

All the reasons fled along with the fear. With the heat of his body against hers, his breath warm on her skin, she couldn’t pull them to mind anymore. She could see the fine sheen of sweat on his skin from where he’d been working. Her breath caught as she looked up. His eyes weren’t locked on hers. Instead, they were locked on her mouth. He looked at her lips as if he wanted to bite into her and in that moment, she would have let him.

“Mia,” he murmured. It was the last thing that was said between them. He descended upon her, his lips on hers as his hands slid upward to tangle in the fall of her hair.

It was a gentle kiss. She didn’t doubt for a moment that Bennett was aware of every injury and mindful not to hurt her. That was just who he was. But as his mouth moved over hers in a kiss that was achingly tender, her body burned for him. When he captured her bottom lip between his, she melted against him. His arms closed around her pulling her even closer, until she was firmly pressed against the hard wall of his chest. She could feel him everywhere.

Then his hands slid downward, cupping her behind, pressing their bodies even more tightly together. The blatant evidence of his desire was unmistakable and her body responded to it insistently. She wanted him. She wanted him with a desperation that she couldn’t even articulate.

The dog whined then, butting his large head between them and demanding to be given the lion’s share of the attention. Breathless, aching, desperate, and more than a little embarrassed that she’d fallen so easily into Bennett’s arms, Mia backed away from him.

“What are we doing, Bennett?” The question was anguished, reflecting the war that raged inside her between the desire to have what she wanted and the need to do what was best for everyone.

“We’re doing what we want for a change,” he replied. “I don’t know why you bailed on me that night. I may never know… but there’s one thing I’m sure of, Mia.”

“What’s that?”

“Whatever your reason for not showing up,” he said firmly. “It wasn’t because you don’t want me—because you don’t want us.”

Forcing herself to move away from him completely, Mia disentangled herself from his arms. She couldn’t think clearly when he touched her, obviously. “Wanting something doesn’t mean you should have it.”

“That’s a fine rule for children… It doesn’t fly with me. I’m a grown man, and God knows you’re a grown woman. Nobody, Mia, and I mean nobody, ought to have a say in what happens between us except us.”

Excerpt

She had come here on business. To ask him about the plane crash. To be a journalist. She had promised herself that when she came to Palmira she would start fresh and respect herself more, at least where men were concerned. That’s what her mother would have wanted, and God knew her mom would have been horrified if she’d been alive to see how Skylar allowed James to steamroll her confidence. Then again, Mom would probably also have been appalled by Skylar half-naked in a pool, lusting after a guy she’d just met.

“It’s interesting. Like I said earlier, one of the paramedics told me that the man who saved the injured guy on the beach had a tattoo on his arm.”

“Imagine that.”

Luca’s eyes met hers, and she couldn’t read his expression. She tipped her head, and her wet hair spilled toward one shoulder. “Were you the one who helped the victim?”

Skylar’s heart pounded when he smiled. He was so beautiful that it was unsettling, and the look on his face showed obvious confidence and desire. With previous dates—even the first time she was with James—she’d always had a running commentary in her mind: When will he kiss me? Now? Later? Ever? Tonight there was no guessing.

He reached through the water and wrapped his fingers around her wrist, gently guiding her hand to his shoulder. She automatically drifted toward him, clasping her other hand at his nape.

She was so close that her breasts brushed his chest. His hands lightly cupped her jaw and neck, while her legs and arms and everywhere in between tingled from his touch.

His mouth hovered over hers, and Skylar was acutely aware of his smooth face, his searching eyes, his scorching fingertips on her skin. His soft mouth met her lips, tentative and gentle at first. He tasted like the wine, crisp and cool and new, and Skylar’s lips instantly flared with heat. It was as if the shimmering blue light in the pool had entered her body and pulsed through her.

Luca pulled back and caught his breath, as if the kiss had taken him by surprise, then again pressed against her. The second assault, too, was shockingly sensual. It slammed into Skylar, defeated all her defenses. Almost.

She shifted her head away from his. Her gaze drifted downward, and she was fascinated by the hard surface of his chest muscles against the softness of the water that surrounded them. Trying to catch her breath, she licked her lips, and guilt over kissing a potential source stung her sensible journalist self. It was a stalling tactic to gather her thoughts, although her only desire was to kiss him again.

“You’re not going to answer my question, are you?” she whispered. With half-lidded eyes, he slowly shook his head and kissed her again.

Jesse

I admit, I didn’t think much of Charlie at first. She was rounder than the girls who usually caught my eye. Not my type. But when I saw her sitting in that booth alone, for the first time something in my mind or my instincts or my heart told me to join her.

She defied me.

She challenged me.

She gave me hope.

Before I knew it, moving forward was my only option.

Charlie

I couldn’t tell you when it happened, but it had to have been a gradual change; I never moved too quickly.

If someone would have told me earlier that year what I was going to go through, I wouldn’t have believed them.

Jesse was so different from anyone I’d met before. And everyone I’ve met since. He sucked all the life out of me, in the best—and worst—ways.

We don’t get strong overnight. For most of us it takes time. Strength isn’t measured by how high and fast our walls go up, but how easily we can watch them fall.

Warning: This book contains material that might be a trigger for some readers. Abuse and rape are implied, but not described in detail. Discretion is advised.

“Play the fucking game. It’s supposed to be fun. And you’re killing my buzz!”

I exhaled. “Fine. Dare.” I cringed, wishing I could take it back. But before I could say anything, she’d already spit it out.

“Take off all of your clothes and jump in the water.”

My jaw dropped and my eyes popped out of their sockets. “Fuck you. Nuh-uh.”

We sat in a stare-down for at least thirty seconds.

“Dude. You totally chose dare.” Angie snickered.

I waited for the shakes to come. I anticipated my fear getting the best of me, and that any minute my head would begin to spin.

But they didn’t come.

Karal winked at me and nudged her chin out toward the beach. “It’s dark. No one will see you. The closest house is too far and I haven’t heard them all weekend. I don’t even think they’re home.”

I swallowed and tugged on my lip. The night air suddenly chilled, and I rubbed my arms for warmth. Karal smiled and mouthed the words you’re beautiful, and I frowned at how ungrateful I was for the compliment.

Angie wouldn’t relent, I knew that. But I also knew that at any point I could just walk away from the fire and resign for the evening. I didn’t have to play their little game.

Or I could’ve just pulled up my big girl panties—errr, pulled them down—and had it over and done with in less than five minutes. I certainly had enough alcohol in my system to make the task bearable, so maybe it wouldn’t be as bad as I thought.

“Fine,” I said, my stomach shuddering with turns and flips. I got to my feet and walked slowly to the beach, removing my shirt as I went. Then one by one, I unclasped each hook on the back of my bra. But by the time I removed it, I was out of their sight. I could barely see the sand under my feet, let alone thirty feet in front of me. From their vantage point, I doubt they could even make out my silhouette.

When I reached the edge of the water, I stripped off my jeans and underpants, letting them rest next to a large boulder so I’d know where to find them when I returned.

“You go girl!” Angie shouted, and I lowered myself into the shallow waters of Lake Mille Lacs, keeping my middle finger above my head in case she could see it.

The moon shone down on my pale skin. Even with the sun I’d gotten that afternoon, I still looked like a ghost. The reflections danced around me, my ears trying to pick up on any tiny sound or sudden movement in the trees.

It was lonely out there, and a little scary too. It had been more than ten years since anyone had seen my flesh, and I was surprised to see how well I handled it. The booze helped.

My belly held a large bulge, and my thighs weren’t even close to having a gap. I still felt my double chin every time I spoke, and I saw the way Jesse looked at me. I wasn’t even remotely on his radar. But I was moving forward, doing something about it. I could at least applaud myself for my efforts.

The stars began to sparkle, and I couldn’t help but stare. But the realization struck me:

I was drunk.

In a lake.

Naked.

Smart. Really smart. Get your ass back to the fire.

I laughed and got up, gathering my clothes on the way back. By the time I got there, I’d managed to get my tee back on. I slipped on my panties just as Karal turned her head.

“Where’s Ang?” I asked, sliding one leg into my jeans.

“She had to pee. How was the water?”

“Surprisingly warm,” I said, trying to maneuver my bra underneath my T-shirt. The old high school locker room trick never failed. Under the shirt, clasp, twist, and slip the arms through. Piece of cake.

“Oooo. I might have to go for a swim!” Karal said.

I smiled and heard Angie rustling through the grass. “Charlie? Oh, Charlie?”

I turned to Angie’s voice, but I couldn’t see her yet. The glare from the fire was too harsh and Angie was back by the cabin where there was little light.

“You better be naked or in your swimsuit,” I shouted. “Because I’m dragging your ass to the lake and throwing you in!”

“Put your clothes on, Charlie. You’ve got company,” Angie sang.

My brow furrowed and I looked down to my shirt. “What are you talking about?” I laughed, remembering our conversation from the night prior. “Did you pick up the pizza delivery guy?”

Angie came into the light of the fire, her face twisted into a frown. “You could say that.”

“Oh yeah?” I opened the cooler and took out a beer.

“Yeah.” Angie’s voice sounded hoarse, and I looked up again just as she stepped aside.

Approaching the fire, the faces became clearer.

“Ladies, Jesse Anders has joined the party,” Angie snarled.

And I dropped my beer.

He wants her to hold his wood . . .

Max is the sole reason Breezy can’t keep a boyfriend. Every boyfriend she has ever had breaks up with her the moment they meet him. It’s not because of his eight-pack, or his panty shredding smile, no, the reason Breezy remains single is because Max is her best friend and also her roommate.

When Breezy’s new boyfriend dumps her after meeting Max for the first time, Breezy is determined to cure her boyfriend woes by challenging Max to a bet after a night of drunken dancing: she can’t click her mouse, he can’t wrestle his snake, and neither one can say the word sex or they lose. It was a simple game of abstinence, until Max decides to tempt Breezy into a hilarious game of innuendos. Now the only thing harder than Max’s “wood”, is figuring out just where their friendship lies after all bets are off.

 Review

I was intrigued when I read the blurb for Innuendos so when I got the opportunity to read an ARC I jumped at the chance – and I’m so glad that I did!!! Started it late evening and read pretty much through the night as I was enjoying the story so much!

Bree and Max have been best friends since high school and are now flatmates. They have a fantastic relationship and are there for each other no matter what.

Max is most definitely my new favourite book boyfriends – he was hot, sexy (yeah, I did have to overlook his – totally warranted – manwhore status!! – but that was explained!!) he was attentive, thoughtful, caring and very funny!! Totally understood why he was Bree’s best friend!!

Bree was totally suited to her bestie – she just couldn’t see him in that light. Too afraid that doing more than flirt with him would ruin their friendship regardless of how attracted she is to him. Her desire to be in a lasting relationship always falls at the hurdle where her latest flame meets Max (he seems to bring out the bf’s insecurities, amongst other things). After her latest breakup – yep, you guessed it, ‘cos of her hottie flatmate – they come up with a ‘no sex’ challenge. Double entendres and innuendos are all grand – they just can’t directly mention or have sex (with others or anyone else!). I honestly haven’t laughed so much reading a book in quite some time. The comments came thick and fast (yeah, that was totally intended!! 😉 ) and Bree gave Max back as good as she got (is that another one?!?!) 😀

There’s a lot more to the story that I’m not gonna tell you, that you need to read yourself!
Supporting characters were really entertaining – especially loved Maggie and her beau. Can’t wait for more in this series!

If you enjoy a great laugh out loud read with a good storyline, go 1-C yourself a copy of Innuendos and settle in for the duration – I promise you, you won’t want to put your eReader down once you get started on this fabulous book!!!
If you enjoy the books of Tara Sivec and/or Alice Clayton, Max & Bree’s story will be up there on your list of faves I’m sure..

I rate Innuendos 5 gloriously funny stars – *****

ARC received in exchange for an honest review. Enjoyed it so much I’ve also bought my own copy!

Excerpt

“Did you touch my panties?” she accuses.

“Excuse me?” I ask innocently.

“My panties did you touch them?”

This couldn’t go more perfectly than if she was a dummy and I was a ventriloquist. “I’m still not following. I usually ask permission before fondling undergarments.”

“You’re incorrigible, I’m serious, Max. Did you touch my panties?”

“How were your panties touched?”

“You know exactly how they were touched, because you were the one touching them.”

“It would help if you were a little more specific on how I touched your panties.”

“You shoved them to the side.”

“I did?” It’s so hard not to laugh.

“You shoved them to the side and stuck your penis in between them.”

Now I’m giggling. This is going perfectly. “I think I would remember if I shoved your panties to the side and stuck my penis anywhere.”

Obviously she’s too sleepy to get the hilarity of this conversation because her face is angry red. She stomps back into her room and comes back out with the bright green dildo I left in her drawer.

“See I have your penis in my hands! You stuck it my drawer after shoving my panties to the side.”

Now I’m laughing hysterically.

“What?” she asks angrily. “You have no idea how hot this conversation is, do you?”

Finally, she wakes up. “You just won’t stop will you?”

“Stop what?”

“Trying to win the bet. You’ve gone to the dark side, Max. This bet has made you officially lose it.”

“How so?”

“You’ve resorted to touching my panties.”

I grin. “Well, if I have to resort to something, touching panties is at the top of my list.”

EXCERPT

Dinner was going great. We talked about future plans and vacations my parents want to take now that Dad is semi-retired. That all changed when dessert was being served, and Kegan got that look in his eye.

“So, KayKay? You told mom about the woman you have living with you yet?” Kegan says like it’s just another piece of everyday news to discuss at the table.

From the corner of my eye, I see both of my parents’ heads snap up and look at me. Center of attention, a position Kegan has always been better at than me. This is his payback for not spilling it about London when he asked. My mind is already thinking of things to do to get back at him; that’s if I don’t strangle him first.

I narrow my eyes at him before speaking. “I do have a house guest,” I respond with as much nonchalance as I can muster.

“Houseguest,” Kegan huffs.

“She’s in the guest room,” I reply and look at my mother. My explanation does nothing to keep the happiness off of her face. Seems I’m as transparent to her as I am to Kegan, and she didn’t show up at the house like he did and see her braless in a tank top and yoga pants.

“And where do you sleep?” Kegan says just before popping an overly large bite of pie into his mouth.

My jaw clenches uncontrollably, and my left eye ticks periodically with my pulse. Fucker.

“How did you meet?” My Aunt Diana asks thinking she’s saving me from Kegan’s questions when she’s actually only making it worse.

Kegan drops his fork on his plate loudly and sits backs far in his chair. “Oh, I love this part of the story.”

It was a social experiment that was supposed to lead to my happily ever after. The rules were simple:

1. Marry a complete stranger chosen for you by a panel of experts.
2. Live together as man and wife for eight weeks.
3. Make a decision to stay together or get a divorce.

Call me crazy, but I had complete faith in the process, until I saw who was waiting for me at the end of the aisle.

Austin James has never met me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know him. With no other choice, I say my vows and pray I can make it through the next eight weeks. Then I’ll leave. What connects us is my best kept secret, and I’ll protect it at all costs even if that means walking away from the only person I’ve ever cared about.

Wanting to get the focus off of me, I ask, “What about you? Why did none of your past relationships work?
He stares straight into my eyes and says, “Because they weren’t you. I was looking for you my whole life and never knew it.” He doesn’t blink, his stare unwavering as he sears his declaration into my mind.
“Nice line.” He’s making me uncomfortable, putting me on edge and getting closer than I’d like.

“It’s not a line. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I believe my other relationships failed so that they’d lead me to you.”

Fate. Is that what this is?

No, it’s karma being a bitch. He doesn’t know what I know. If he did, he wouldn’t be spilling this poetic bullshit about us being destined for each other.
