All my life I’ve been hiding, until there is no corner on this god-forsaken earth left for me to hide. I have to pay for the sins of my father. No one with Ellison blood in their veins is allowed to live, and I am the last of my bloodline.

I am kept in a container waiting for my death sentence to be carried out, when he comes. He is only known as ‘Predator’. No one knows who he works for, only that he leaves no one alive.

His every breath is filled with the last gasp of his dying prey.

But for some reason he doesn’t kill me.

I don’t know which is worse, the death sentence hanging over my head, or being at his mercy.

Excerpt

“Look at me, Cara,” and he waits until I do, “love is such a flawed thing. You can love someone but still leave them. What I feel for you goes way beyond that one word. I’m addicted to you. I feel protective of you. I breathe for you.” His eyes caress my face and follow the tears into my hair. “Love is really such a flawed word for what I feel. I live for you.”

Author Bio

Michelle Horst is from a small town in South Africa.

She’s been in love with reading from an early age. She has a passion for books, quotes and animals.

She first tried her hand at writing in early 2009 and as the first words started to form into a book, she knew she was hooked.

Dreams spilled onto pages, and that was the beginning of a wonderful journey. A journey filled with joy, passion and heart stopping moments. Most of all, it’s filled with such pride and peace as a story comes to life, and characters fill your life, living in the very walls of your mind, living in the minds of your readers.

Thank you to each and every reader and for choosing to escape in one of my books.

I push my glass towards him for another refill, downing the shot of liquid courage. “You ever think about what might have been?”

Will scoffs and sets his glass down. “You’re seriously asking me this?”

“What?” I say, getting pissy now, because he acts as though he’s the only one who lost something. “I can’t ask a question?”

He takes another sip, avoiding my gaze. The humour has left his face; his mouth forms a tight line as he stares down into his drink. “You can’t ask that question.”

“Okay then,” I say, agitated that he’s calling the shots. I ask a question I’ve been wanting the answer to for a very long time. “Why didn’t you leave?”

“Jesus, not you too.” Will shakes his head. “You sound like Josh.”

“Who the hell is Josh?”

He slams back the rest of his drink and beats his fist against his chest. “Fuck buddy.”

“You have a fuck buddy?” I clench my jaw. I’m starting to see why Bundy has a bad name. Right now, I’d like to find Josh and beat his fucking head in.

Will laughs. “Look at you getting all jealous.”

Is he fucking kidding me?

“How long?” I say through my teeth.

“How long have I been fucking him? Or how long is his cock? It’s about five for both.”

“Five what?” I snap. “Days? Weeks?”

“Months.” He rests his elbow on the bar, dangling his glass from his long fingers. “And inches.”

“You been fucking this Josh for five months, and you didn’t think to mention it?”

“I’ve fucked a lot of men in the last twelve years, North. Why would I mention any of them to you?”

“I kissed you.”

“Yeah, and I didn’t ask for it,” he says, swirling the liquor in his glass. “How many women have you slept with in the past twelve years?”

I don’t have an answer for him. I don’t even remember half of their names, only that I was fumbling around in a drunken stupor, trying to grab onto just a little bit of happiness. On the outside I have all my shit together, but inwardly I’m hollow. I’m the worthless piece of shit my father always told me I was, and I’d bury my dick in anyone in an attempt to find something that made me feel even half of what Will had that summer.

Sandra Hastings has just lost the case of her career. Mob boss Silvestre Buonoventura is exonerated and now out to get her. And if that’s not enough, the New York D.A.’s office has politely asked her to take some time off… maybe a lot of time… like forever.

Nick McCullough is a little bored with tiny Stone Bay, Maine, and his new job as Chief of Police. He’s hopeful though that a weekend camping with the lovely Sandra Hastings will put a little zing into his life. Excerpt:

As she lay in the dirt with her head outside of the shed, her feet inside, and the small of her back wedged under the bottom of the door, she considered that perhaps this was more than she could do. She was tired, she was filthy, she was hungry and she had to pee… again. Why hadn’t she done that before she contorted her body under the damn door?

With her face in the dirt, she was almost to the point of giving up when she heard something from the jungle across the clearing. A rustling but not accompanied by the distinctive chatter of the small monkeys who had kept her awake during the past two nights. In fact, there was no other sound. It was as if the jungle creatures had turned to stone in fear. And the thought of what could instill fear in them had her slowly easing her head up from the dirt.

At first, she saw nothing in the dim moments before the sun’s rays would angle directly into the clearing, but she still heard rustling in the bushes at a point directly across from her shed. Something was there, something big.

Then from the corner of her eye, she saw movement. At first just a dark shape peeking out of the leaves. Perhaps one of those monkeys.

Nope. In the next instant, the boxy black shape became something long… and slithery.

At first, it came into the now illuminated clearing slowly, sinuously. She knew the head looked big from her vantage point in the dirt, but as she pushed her body up with her arms, she realized that big wasn’t a… big enough word for the creature. It slithered out into the early morning sun, and slithered and then slithered some more until in the center of the clearing the thing began coiling and stacking its body until it looked like a turban.

Sandra knew she should do something. But nothing much came to mind except to stare. She was still caught with her butt wedged under the shed door. If that thing started toward her, she wouldn’t have a chance of pushing herself back under the door to the safety of her cell. And she’d dug a damn hole as a welcoming entrance for the beast. Come on inside and have a meal… of tasty plump American woman. Nick where are you? I need you to come and kill this thing right now.

In the summer she walks on her beach every day, listening to the song of the pebbles being washed back and forth in the tide. It’s a musical and inspiring sound. BLOG TOUR – Tangled Hearts by Sarah O’Rourke

teaser

Army Strong has a mission….to protect Southern Sassy at all costs.

The directive had been clear: Deeply embed himself in the fair town of Paradise, Tennessee, and keep one Melody Song Reardon from forgiving her fornicating ex-fiancé and keep her safe by any means necessary. Fortunately, Retired First Sergeant Callum Valentine had always been a man that got the job done. Unfortunately, nobody told him that while his ‘job’ might be as pretty as a picture, she could be ornery as a wet cat and had a stubborn streak a mile long. Now, he was battling baristas and dodging would-be assassins in an effort to keep one sultry southern minx safe.

He’d thought the Taliban would be the most dangerous force he ever face. Imagine his surprise when he realized that the radical extremists had nothing on one curvy little woman with a wicked edge to her tongue…. a woman that had somehow tangled herself around his cold heart.

★✩★

Melody Song Reardon was done with men. After learning that the man she’d been going to marry was no better than a corporate Casanova in and out of the boardroom and bedroom, she’d decided that love just wasn’t in the cards for her. Which was fine. She was young, smart, and capable… and better yet, she had a dream and a plan: Opening her very own book/yarn store – Hooks & Books. She had the brains. She had the building. And now, she had a freaking bodyguard compliments of her interfering older brother?

She didn’t care how mouthwateringly handsome her so-called savior was; she didn’t need another controlling man in her life telling her what to do. At least, she hadn’t needed one…. until those nerve wracking hang-ups and strange notes took an ominous turn. Now, somebody wants her dead and the only thing standing between her and the Grim Reaper is one seriously gorgeous man named Callum Valentine. Falling in love again in the middle of her own personal apocalypse hadn’t been the plans…then again, the great thing about a plan is that it can change on a dime!

Excerpt

Cal watched her another minute. “You’re a stubborn little ball of fury, aren’t you?” he asked as he watched her try to attach the tool to the lug nut, wincing as the metal slipped for the second time in a row.

Melody took a deep breath before she slowly turned to face her tormenter. “I was brought up believing that a girl should be able to take care of herself. I forgot that lesson for a little while and almost made a mistake I could never undo with a man I’d rather forget. I’m not ever going to repeat that experience again. So, to answer your question, yes, I’m a stubborn little ball of fury. Now, will you please go on your merry way?”

Cal finally gave into the urge and laughed, earning himself a cold look from the woman currently on her knees. “Careful, Princess. I’m gonna get a complex here because it’s beginning to feel like you don’t like me very much,” he taunted her with a wink. Seeing her press her lips together tightly, he knew she was fighting the urge to scream bloody murder at him. Squatting beside her, he met her fiery gaze. “Cat got your tongue, Pretty Girl?”

“No,” she declared with a shake of her head as she looked from him to his jacked up truck. “Do you mind if I ask you a question?”

“Ask away, darlin’,” he invited silkily with a ready nod. “I’m an open book,” he declared, holding his muscular arms out to his sides. And it was true. The book on him was open; it just happened to be written in code, he thought to himself as he gave himself a mental pat on the back for his own wittiness.

Melody offered him a deceptively sweet smile. “Is it true that men use big trucks to compensate for smaller endowments in, well,… other more intimate areas?” she asked, dropping her voice to a conversational whisper as she gave his crotch a rather pointed look.

Cal guffawed. “Are you asking me if I’ve got a tiny dick, Princess? Because I can tell you with a hundred percent honesty that the size of my cock and the size of my truck are very directly related. They’re both big and bad, but if you don’t believe me, I’d be pleased to give you a private showing.”

Melody’s jaw dropped at his audacity. “You… you just can’t say things like that!” she blustered, blushing furiously as he laughed in her face.

“I just did. Besides, you started it,” he accused, propping his hands on his narrow hips as he leaned forward and stared her down. “Don’t dish it out if you can’t handle having it spoon-fed back to you, Princess.” Damn, Cal privately mused, he hadn’t had this much fun with a woman with her clothes on in years. He couldn’t help wondering how exciting she’d be with her clothes off. He definitely be making it a point to find that out as soon as humanly possible.

“I revert to my earlier statement. You are a pig,” she reiterated with a disgusted shake of her head, her ponytail flying over one shoulder to smack him in the face as she moved.

“Maybe, but you’re just mad that you can’t seem to get one-up on me. Not used to a man that will stand his ground and fight with you?” he asked, fishing for a response from her. He wanted to know just how much she’d reveal about her ex-fiancé in casual conversation. Her brother didn’t think there’d been any kind of physical abuse and based on her reactions to him, he tended to think RJ was right, but he wanted to be sure. Because if he was wrong, she wouldn’t need his protection because he’d simply kill the motherfucker and be done with it.

“My former fiancé didn’t fight. It was too low-class a thing for him to do. He used to call our arguments spirited debates. My ass, they were debates. Freaking moron. A fight is a fight, right?” she asked as she grunted with exertion while she tried to pry one of the lug nuts loose.

“Right,” he agreed with a nod, sighing as her tool slipped again. “Politicians have….what did you call ‘em? Spirited debates? Real men and women fight.”

“See, that’s what I thought, too. But maybe that was the problem,” Melody muttered as she twisted the tire iron sharply, silently cursing the tight bolt. “I always did think Bradley had political ambitions. God knows that it’s what his dear old mommy and daddy wanted for him,” she continued to growl through gritted teeth as she twisted the tire iron violently. “Eureka!” she shouted when the bolt moved a few millimeters. “Did you see that? It moved,” she yelped, as her body made a tiny celebratory shimmy.

Cal chuckled softly at her little dance. “Sounds like this Bradley fella was kinda a douche,” he surmised, carefully watching Melody’s face.

“That is the understatement of the frickin’ year. Heck, maybe the decade, too,” Melody muttered, lifting one hand to take a swipe at her sweaty forehead.

Edging toward her, Cal tried to make a grab for the tool in her hand. “Seriously, babe. Let me do that for you,” he demanded gruffly, afraid she was going to either damage the wheel well or herself with her rough use of the tool.

“I’m about done warnin’ you, Stranger, so I’ll try and be real clear one last time. You try to touch my tire iron again and I’m gonna introduce it to the side of that hard head of yours. Repeatedly,” she informed him grimly while she desperately tried to loosen the second lug nut. “And, for the record, let me just state that I am most certainly NOT your babe,” she huffed, panting with exertion.

He could see her energy waning and shook his head. “You’re completely right, you aren’t my babe,” he agreed, covering Melody’s icy hands with his as she growled fiercely at the tire. “Right now, you’re more of my pain in the ass, woman,” he continued, his hands tightening on hers as he helped her turn the lug nut. “This’d be so much easier if you’d just let me do it,” he stated again, afraid he was going to hurt her hand by squeezing it too hard. “Honest to God, sassy, sweet and stubborn is not the sexy combination I thought it would be on you.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I can honestly say I really enjoyed Tangled Hearts – it’s only the 2nd Passion in Paradise book I’ve read, the other being The Homespun Holiday, but I will definitely be going back and checking out the McKinnon sisters books as I like the girls writing style and I’ve been drawn in by the characters in both books I’ve read.

I enjoyed the humour that came with the banter and arguments between Melody and Callum. There were some real laugh out loud moments – one in particular where, though what was happening was serious, the reactions and conversation were FAF. I also enjoyed the chapter titles, they (sorta) gave a little insight into what might be coming!!

“It was nice meeting you, Cal. I’d welcome you to town, but in all honesty, you seem like a nice guy. So I’m gonna do you a favour and warn you now that crzy breed in this town faster than roofied rabbits. Don’t let the insanity suck you under, too”

“Is that why it sounds like everything that comes out of your mouth is an order issued by the High Counsel of  Annoying Assholes?” she asked pertly.

I’m not a huge fan of insta-love but on this occasion I did like how fast and hard Callum fell for Melody and how nothing she could do or say put him off his mission to win her over. Personally, I honestly couldn’t live with an overprotective alpha male like Mr Valentine but hell, I LOVE to read about them and I fell for Cal big time!!!

On the whole I liked Melody – she was sassy, funny and had a big heart but hell, she made me want to throw my kindle at least once or twice she was so bloody pigheaded and stubborn at times!
I got that she had had to rely on herself for a fair time and that the hurt she felt from the relationship with her ex affected her and how she was gonna view men but gods, how Cal didn’t just throw his hands in the air and walk away after a while I don’t know -the guy had patience in abundance!!

The attraction, interest and desire between the pair led up nicely to things developing and it was good to see how things moved along for them. When our two got down to business things were hot and heavy and made for good reading!! 😉

I loved the inclusion of characters from the other books and we got to meet at least a couple of new characters who I’m sure we are gonna come across later in the series.

The thing that mainly stops me from giving the book more than 4 stars was the reveal of who had been hassling Melody and why… I really found it all a bit silly and the way the whole thing went down took the edge off of how much I had been caught up in the book until that point!

All in all, Tangled Hearts was a fun, enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to getting to know more of the Paradise residents when I check out the other books in the series!

I’m currently swithering between 3.5 – 4 stars so I’m gonna plump for 3.75*!!

EXCERPT

His lips touched down on hers gently, catching her off-guard. Her lush, warm, delicately formed lips were like a Rococo painting—elegant and beautiful, inspiring.
She tasted of spice and orange from the tea she’d drank, and the way she melted against him made Ransom’s chest swell. His hand drifted into her silky brown hair and fisted, bringing her closer as his tongue delved into her wet mouth. He tasted her deeply, sweeping every corner and pulling soft, sweet moans from her.
Twisting to face him, her hands rose up to grasp the backs of his arms with a desperation that fueled Ransom’s desire. His cock thickened, pressing against his fly, wanting to get inside her with an urgency that wouldn’t be tamed.
“You taste so sweet,” he told her as he nibbled on her plump bottom lip. “I could kiss you forever.”
“Ransom,” she breathed, the sound and erotic plea that Ransom longed to answer.
But he knew he shouldn’t. Neither of them were in the right frame of mind to be making such a big step. She was fresh out of a relationship, and he was still dealing with the aftermath of one. Add to that a drinking problem, and at least one of them had no business diving into a relationship.
Because that’s where this was sure to go. Dani was the type that a man could take one look at and know to touch her was to marry her.
Not that it would prevent him from exploring everything she had to offer.
In her own unique way, Dani enticed him. Lured him in like a fish on a hook, and he had to see what was on the other end of that line.
Shelving his concerns for the time being, Ransom followed his baser instincts, heedless of the consequences because it felt too good to deny himself the kind of pleasures she offered.
With her knee pressed against the outside of his thigh, her body angled toward his, she was too far away to satisfy his craving to touch her. Needing to feel her lush heat against him, Ransom looped his arm around her waist and leveraged her over him. Her knees planted firmly on either side of his legs, her hot core centered over his throbbing length, causing Ransom’s eyes to cross beneath his closed lids.
She felt it too, gasping into his mouth in a most delicious way, inciting his need to devour her.
Fingers locked tight in his hair, she turned her head to break the kiss. “This doesn’t feel very friendly,” she panted as he moved his lips along her jaw.
“I don’t know,” he said against her delicate throat that arched as she tilted her head to allow him better access. “It feels pretty damn friendly to me.” His pelvis pushed up, showing her just how friendly he was feeling, and despite her reservations, her hips rolled in answer.
Feeling that concentrated heat against him, Ransom’s cock jumped, the blood rushing south and making it harder than a steel pipe. His heart began to race as thoughts of getting her on her back beneath him filled his mind.
To hell with reservations. He had to have her.

EXCERPT

Landon pulled softly on his arm again, and Rod got the hint. He kneeled between Landon’s legs, with his knees on the floor. “You’re determined,” Landon told him.

Yes, yes he was. At least when it came to this. “Is that a bad thing?”

Landon smiled. “Hell no. You’ve had my dick hard since the first time I saw you. Easy Ride comes in the mail too, ya know?”

“Aww, so you came to see me?”

“Shut up so I can kiss you.” The look in Landon’s eyes turned dark, hungry, urgent, and he pulled Rod closer, covering Rod’s mouth with his own. His tongue went straight for Rod’s lips, demanding entrance, and Rod gave it easily. He tasted like a mixture of coffee and mint, like maybe he’d had a drink right after brushing his teeth.

Rod slid his hands up Landon’s thighs until he got to the bulge at the apex of them and rubbed his hand over it, feeling the large bump beneath his jeans.

Landon growled into his mouth, making it vibrate through him.

He leaned back, grabbed the bottom of Rod’s shirt and pulled it over his head. “I’m so damned hungry for you. This won’t be slow. It’ll be fast and hard.”

“Were you under the impression that I wanted it slow?”

Grinning, Landon reached around and swatted Rod’s ass. “Let’s go to the room.”

“Why move when we can do it right here?” He didn’t want to give Landon the chance to change his mind. Rod reached under the couch and grabbed a bottle of lube, before pulling a condom from his wallet and tossing both to the couch.

“You keep lube under your couch?”

“I live alone. I can jack off wherever I want. Are we going to talk or do this?” But really, he liked talking to Landon, and if what Landon said was true, he liked talking to Rod as well.

“Fuck now, words later.”

Hell yes. Definitely what he wanted to hear. Rod stood up to take off his jeans. As he worked the button, Landon traced a path across his stomach with his tongue. He nipped at the skin next to Rod’s belly button, just enough to sting before he sucked the skin into his mouth again.

“Oh fuck.” Rod’s bones melted; his knees went weak.

“Get out of those pants before I rip them off of you. Want your ass.”

Rod looked down at him and nodded, letting Landon know he was good to go. Finally, his goddamned fingers started to work and he got his pants unbuttoned and unzipped. Blood rushed through his ears. His cock ached as he pulled down his jeans.

Landon leaned in. “Jesus, you’re leaking like crazy. Look at that fucking wet spot. I want your taste on my tongue again.” And then he nuzzled his face between Rod’s legs, his mouth against the growing spot of pre-come in Rod’s underwear.

“Damn, I’m going to fucking kill you if you make me come too soon.” Even as he spoke, Rod had his hand in Landon’s hair, pushing his face closer to his aching cock.

Landon smacked his ass again, before pulling back. “Get them off.”

There was a slight tingle in Rod’s cheek from the smacks. “You’re naughty, aren’t you?” The thought just made his balls even more heavy and tight.

“For some reason, I doubt I have anything on your level of naughtiness.”

Rod shrugged. “It gives you something to strive for. You can practice on me if you want.”

“I’ll consider it, now get your ass out of your underwear and on my dick.”

Rod’s cock pulsed behind the tightening fabric. “Don’t have to tell me twice.”

As I lay there, legs spread wide for him, panting with desire, I remembered why I agreed to the plethora of embarrassing, humiliating predicaments he put me in—because he knew how to take me to heights of bliss I’d never experienced before. As strange as it was, I could trust him to put my needs and my happiness at the top of his priority list, and I knew he would always do right by me.

“I’ve got something new for us to play with tonight. A gift actually.” He stood over me, shirtless, and I tried to focus on his words rather than the ripples of his torso.

Lying on my back, wrists and ankles bound with my legs in the air, it felt incredibly naughty to be receiving a present in such a vulnerable and aroused state. “What is it?”

“I’ll go get it.” He left the room for a minute. When he returned he carried what looked like a jeweler’s box. It was long and skinny—the kind used to house necklaces.

A white bow topped the package, and he held it under my nose for me to inspect.

An awkward laugh bubbled up from my throat. “I can’t really open it.”

His intense, dark eyes pierced mine. “Use your teeth.”

He brought the gift so close to my lips it was almost touching, and I bobbed my head forward, taking a piece of the white grosgrain ribbon between my teeth. I yanked my head back, loosening the wrapping.

“Good girl,” he said with a wink. “I’ll get the rest of it for you.”

“Thank you, Sir.”

He ripped the paper off, tossing it to the floor. Then he opened the sapphire-blue velvet case that had been underneath.

A bright, dark-silver strand of pearls gleamed up from the cream-colored satin they nested against.

“Pearls?”

He smirked. “I knew you’d already have some white ones.”

I nodded. “I do. But these are beautiful, Quentin. What are they, black pearls or some other kind?”

“You’re right. They’re the black ones. But it’s not as much what they are as what I’m going to do to you with them.”

RIGGS

Heart.
It’s what keeps you from being reckless. It’s what keeps you breathing.
Money, power and respect… they were my god given right, not the reason I joined the Satan’s Knights. I tied myself to my club and nothing else. Give me my bike, the open road and a different woman every night and I was happy.
My life was great.
Until the chaos exploded.
One night.
One reckless temptation and I finally found my reason for breathing.
I never saw her coming. The girl that would turn my world upside down and give me my heart.
Only it was too late.
One mistake can take it all away.
I’m about to lose my heart.
The thing that keeps me breathing.
The thing that keeps me from being reckless.

LAUREN BIANCI

Drop out of nursing school? Check.
Have no idea what you’re going to do with your life? Check.
Disappoint your family? Double check.
Meet a biker and have crazy sex against a wall? Check. Check. Check.
Get knocked up by said biker? Check.
I was always the good girl, the prodigal child, the girl who said and did all the right things.
Things like this didn’t happen to me.
Until him.
Until he smiled.
Until he tempted me to find out what made me happy.
Too bad it’s him.
We’ll never work, but, I can pretend can’t I?
Just for a little while.
Just until it’s over.

EXCERPT

The Pink Pussycat

More Bianci bullshit was headed my way.

“Maria thinks Lauren is an intern at a hospital, a requirement for her nursing degree. The is, she kind of quit the program,” Mia continued.

I lifted an eyebrow. “Mama Leone” was going to blow a gasket.

“So if she’s not playing Florence Nightingale, where is she?” I questioned.

Silence.

Fuck my life. I stalked toward Mia, watching as she raised an eyebrow and walked backwards until her back slammed against the door.

“Ouch,” she muttered.

I narrowed my eyes, bracing one hand flat against the door over her head and leaned close to her.

“Where is she?” I repeated.

“She’s working at a bar in town, near campus,” she said, stepping around me to walk toward her desk. She ripped a piece of paper off a pad and scribbling something on it. “Here’s the address. She’s not answering the phone so you need to go get her before Maria starts asking questions.”

“You’re kidding right?” Does the leather and tattoos not scare anyone anymore these days? These people are walking all over me like I’m some kind of jerk off.

“I don’t even know what she looks like,” I grunted, staring down at the scribbled address, wondering what kind of bar the Pink Pussycat was and what the fuck I did in life to deserve this shit.

Mia looked at me for a moment before turning around and grabbing a picture frame off her dresser. She held up the framed photo of her and what I assumed was Lauren. I dropped my eyes to the picture of the two girls, my eyes zeroing in on Lauren.

Big crystal blue eyes, framed by thick black-rimmed glasses, stared back at me. She had a killer smile, perfectly straight, white teeth, framed by full pink lips and a cute tongue since she was sticking it out the side of her mouth. Her black hair framed her face in waves, a stark contrast to her bright blue eyes. She was pretty, hot even, if you’re into the girl next door type. Or nurses. I wouldn’t mind being her patient.

I lifted my eyes back to Mia’s and handed her back her photograph before turning around and pulling open the door.

“Are you going to go get her?” Mia called over my shoulder. I ignored her and brushed past Maria who was scowling at me from the bathroom door.

“Got lost on your way to the john?” She asked, crossing her arms and tapping her foot impatiently.

“No, when you wouldn’t hold my dick for me I thought I’d test my luck with your daughter’s roommate,” I smiled, glancing over my shoulder at Mia. “Thanks, babe,” I winked.

“What? No! I didn’t…” Mia stammered.

These Bianci people were a pain in my ass but they sure were fun to fuck with.

I turned around and shoved my finger in front of Maria’s nose.

“I’ll be back. Don’t. Fucking. Move.”

“Where are you going?”

“To pick up your damn daughter, because someone upstairs…” I pointed my index finger to the ceiling, “…wants to keep fucking testing my patience with you people.”

It was her turn to shove her accusing finger in my face.

“You’re going to the hospital to pick her up? Just…don’t talk to anyone. I’m warning you, you better behave yourself and not embarrass her. Lauren has worked very hard to get where she is and the last thing she needs is some scoundrel like you, messing things up for her with your crude mouth and poor manners,” she said.

Was this bitch serious?

“I’ll try not to piss on the floors of the hospital and promise not to pick my nose in front of any hotshot doctors,” I sneered, shaking my head in disgust.

She should only know how deep my manners go.

I stalked out of the apartment, slamming the door behind me and glanced at the address Mia had given me. Fucking bullshit.

I typed the address into the GPS of the cage I was driving because I was in the middle of Bumblefuck New York, full of winding roads and fucking deer. I was waiting for that to happen next because why not add killing Bambi to this wretched night.

I whimpered as I drove, feeling sorry for myself and slammed my hand against the steering wheel.

I just wanted my bike and the open road.

And maybe a blowjob.

That would be nice.

Lauren’s pretty, pink lips, wrapped nice and tight around my dick and those blue eyes peeking up at me over the frames of her glasses. Shit. Where the fuck did that come from?

Get your shit together, Riggs.

“You’ve arrived at your destination,” the GPS alerted, and I’m not going to lie, she sounded hot too.

I needed to get laid.

Or I needed to go to bed.

Something. Anything.

The Pink Pussycat was packed, people stood in line waiting to get inside even at three a.m., apparently making it a happening joint for the people of Bumblefuck. I moved to the front of the line and a big brut of a guy stood there, staring down at me.

“Line’s back there,” the beast said.

“That’s nice, move aside,” I replied, stepping around him but he took mimicked my move and blocked me again.

I glanced at the heavens.

“Why?” I shouted into the dark sky.

No one answered.

Pussy.

Shit, I was probably going to hell for that one.

I looked back at the beast of a bouncer who raised an eyebrow at me, and was tempted to tell him he looked like Michael Clarke Duncan, but I needed to focus. I took a deep breath and opened my cut for him to see the gun I had tucked into my waistband.

“Listen, bud, I’ve had the night from hell and I’m ten seconds away from losing it, so move the fuck out of my way and let me do what the fuck I came here to do,” I growled, reaching for the gun.

He crossed his arms, glanced at my gun, and shook his head completely unfazed.

“Pretty please, with sugar on top?” I tried. Nothing. “Fuck! The name “Tony Soprano” mean anything to you? Shit, I mean, fuck, what’s his name…Pastore.” the burley bouncer remained unmoved. That’s it. I can’t take anymore. “Bro, get the fuck out of my way, seriously, I have to get one of the girls that works here, I’m her ride.”

“Who?”

“Lauren Bianci,” I huffed. That fucking last name was nothing but trouble.

“Shit, man, why didn’t you say so?” He pounded me on the back and smiled. “Lauren’s my girl, love that chick, always makes me smile,” he said, with an actual smile. “Go on in. She’s working the bar tonight.”

I think I muttered a thank you, I’m not sure, but I brushed past him and stepped foot into the loud bar that was packed beyond capacity. It took me five minutes, pushing my way through the crowd toward the bar that was surrounded mostly by men that were hooting and hollering.

What was the big fuss?

I squeezed my way between two jocks screaming for their turn to be next and caught a glimpse of what had every guy in this joint begging to be next.

The girl next door was on her knees, crawling the length of the bar, from one lucky bastard to another. She poured the liquor straight from the bottle into some lucky bastard’s mouth.

“Marry me!” He shouted, and she threw her head back and laughed.

“Oh baby, I’m not the marrying kind,” she said, blowing him a kiss before she rose to her feet and gave me a full view of her outfit. I started with the shoes that stomped across the bar, fucking sexy as hell. I’d make her keep them on when she wrapped her legs around me and wouldn’t even mind those five-inch heels digging into my back. She was a tiny thing, maybe five foot two, if that, but those heels made her killer legs seem so long. Or maybe it was the short plaid skirt that gave every man at the bar a peep show. Her waist was tiny and her stomach flat, but her rack? Man, what I wouldn’t do to shove my face in her tits. Her shirt knotted under her breasts and was open for all to see the black lace bra she was wearing. I squinted, hoping to catch a little peak of her nips but she was moving all over the place, dancing up a storm as she flirted and poured liquor into all the open mouths, waiting for a taste.

Lauren Bianci, the girl next door, rocked the naughty, school girl bit like no one’s business.

“What’s the matter handsome? Why so serious?” She asked. Her big blue eyes, framed by those damn glasses, staring straight into mine. Every fucking thing went south, whatever common sense I had left, all my blood, it all went straight to my dick. She smiled wide, bending down and pulled my hat from my head before she ran her fingers through my messy hair and yanked my head back. “Open up,” she demanded against my ear.

I looked into those eyes and was fucking lost. She could’ve demanded I run around the bar naked, barking like a dog and I would’ve done it. So I opened my mouth and let her pour the cinnamon flavored whiskey down my throat.

My dick was rock-fucking-hard.

Down boy!

She pulled the bottle away and swiped her thumb across my lips.

“Good boy,” she cheered, as she was about to turn her attention to the man beside me but I grabbed her wrist. Something changed in her eyes and she glanced around the bar, my guess in search of a bouncer. She probably thought I was just another schmuck that wanted to take her into a bathroom stall. I kind of did.

I leaned closer, hypnotized by her perfume and sniffed her.

“Show’s over Lauren. Grab your things it’s time to go,” I said against her ear.

She tried to pull her wrist from my hand but my grip tightened and I turned my head a fraction to stare into those blue orbs again. Shit, they were pretty.

“How do you know my name?”

It was a modern take on an arranged marriage that was supposed to lead to my happily ever after.
The rules were simple:

1. Marry a complete stranger chosen for you by professionals.
2. Live together as man and wife for eight weeks while cameras record your every move.
3. Make a decision to stay together or get a divorce.

Call me crazy, but I had complete faith in the process, until I saw who was waiting for me at the end of the aisle.

Austin James has never met me, but that doesn’t mean I don’t know him. With no other choice, I say my vows and pray I can make it through the next eight weeks. Then I’ll leave. What connects us is my best kept secret, and I’ll protect it at all costs even if that means walking away from the only person I’ve ever cared about.

The longer this experiment goes on, the more I fall for him, and the more the deceit eats at me. When I lie awake some nights, it crawls up my body, tickling my skin, reminding me that underneath, I’m a horrible human being.
Deceitful.
Cowardly.
Manipulative.
Selfish.
All negative adjectives, and all describe me.
He’ll never find out, taunts an inner voice. What’s worse is that it also tells me it’s okay to keep this from him. That the two of us can live out this fantasy unscathed and content. As delusional as my inner voice is, I find myself clinging to it like a leech, feasting on the lie.
