Can be found in the Once upon midnight anthology

From the moment Oceanus von Stein, second-in-command to the Patchwork family, caught sight of Taegan Conner, daughter of the leader of the Wolves, he knew he would never love another. Only now, she has been promised in marriage to another, an arrangement to strengthen her family’s alliances–and she gets no say in the matter. Can they find a way to be together, or will they both always be two Broken Pieces?

Take place during Pieces

Chapter One
Being the oldest isn’t always easy.
Everyone depends on you.
Looks up to you.
You are the poster child for the family.
Plus, you worry about everything.
Well, at least, I do.
Which means being selfish isn’t possible. Maybe not selfish—that word is harsh and I’ve never really liked it, but something along those lines. What I mean is that my needs, my wants are not important when I have three younger siblings and a father to worry for.
You see, I’m a very busy man. I have many jobs. The first and most important being to protect and love my family. With everything inside of me. It is my job to guide my brothers and sister in the right direction to be future leaders of our community. The community my family
runs. A community that is unseen to the human eye, which is fine by me. Dealing with witches, wolves, shifters, and vampires, along with the Patchwork citizens is enough in my opinion. They cause enough drama for one man, yet I love them. I want to protect them.
They are my extended family.
Even if a faction of our Works—the shifters—wants to overthrow my family and take over, I still care for their well-being. I have to. It’s my job as a future leader of the Works. When my father decides to step down, which could be at any moment, it will be my job to step up and be the king this community needs. Not that my father isn’t doing his job; he is. It’s just…he’s old-school. Very old-school, and while all his parts are working at their full capacity, he isn’t the man he used to be. So much has changed. This isn’t the 1800s anymore, but my father apparently
missed that memo. He’s budged a bit, adapted some, but he still has the same notions he had back then, and they drive me absolutely mad.
Beyond furious, actually.
But what do I expect? He lived in a time where a man was always right and you followed your father, your leader. After he lost his father to the plague, he became the leader and led his family. I don’t think my father meant for his life to go where it did, but it all changed when he found his grandfather’s old lab books.
That grandfather was Dr. Frankenstein.
The guy who made Frankenstein’s monster himself. Yes, the stories are true. But what the stories don’t tell you is that he had a son, who had four more sons, my father being one of them. With Father’s grandfather gone, and then his own father dying, I doubt anyone expected for Dr. Frankenstein’s work ever to surface again. But my father was and may be smarter than his ancestors. For when he found the books, he became obsessed with them, and soon he developed a formula that granted a man immortality.
True immortality.
He soon administrated the formula to his brother, Samuel. But after their mother and two other brothers died when the formula didn’t work on them, Samuel and Father were discovered.
So, of course, they fled. They had no choice. But they did have a choice when they decided to come to America and make their own clan.
A clan full of immortal people who would follow and bow down to them. Or, really, to my father. I doubt Samuel had much say in it, but my father, yeah, he was drunk with the power he had. He knew he was the best, a god in his mind, and people flocked to him. They begged for the formula, needed it, and soon my father had his clan.
His Patchwork.
You would think that would be enough, but it wasn’t. Soon he reached out to the other supernatural groups. The vampires were first. The main reason was the simple fact that my uncle loved to sleep with them. The vampires didn’t need anything from my father, but he offered them an alliance, a way to get them constant blood since he had turned the owner of the local hospital immortal. As long as the vampires followed my father, he would be there to help them. As creatures of the night, and being killed off almost every other night by hunters and humans, they
signed on quickly.
Next were the witches. My father promised to export and import anything they needed or wanted on his fleet of ships. In return, he would use their spells and rituals for things he was unable to fix.
The wolves signed on for the money. My father needed lots of guards and security support, and he paid very heavily for them. At first, it was just employment. But somewhere in there, my father worked out some kind of alliance. It’s beyond me, but he did it, and now they are basically eating out of his hand.
No pun intended.
The shifters are a whole other story. The resisted us, only coming to us with offers for the formula itself. Father denied them, of course, but he did ask them to join us. He offered that we would protect them and even employ some of them. He wanted to make our community complete with the five strongest clans of supernatural beings. But the shifters didn’t want any part; they were independent. That was, until people started dying and they needed the protection my father offered since no one could catch who was killing off their clan. I believe my father had a part in it, that he hired people to kill them, but he denies it.
Either way, my father got his underground clan, and soon, the rules were in place.
Do what your clan is expected to do. All of us have a particular job to keep the Works running. The guard support the wolves offer—along with their construction work. The spells and treatments the witches provide. The political connections the vampires play a part in. And we can’t forget the connections on Wall Street that the shifters give us. It’s simple, really. Everyone plays their part and reports back to Father. Well, the clan leaders do, at least.
Another rule is paying your taxes. For obvious reasons, if my father is protecting your group, curing diseases, providing good housing, and everything else he does, the least you can do is pay the monthly tax.
Lastly, don’t mix clans. Father wants to keep the purest of bloodlines, to make the future children of the Works the strongest and best—my father’s words, not mine. Now, that is the rule that gets broken the most. Mostly by my uncle Samuel and his obsession with vampires. But
even with his lust for the creatures, he has never fathered a child, mostly because vampires can’t have children. That isn’t the case for other clans, though. And when it happens, I mean, when a mixed-clan child is conceived, it isn’t long after birth that the child is killed.
That sickens me and will be one of the first things I change when I am the leader of the
Works.
I just have to get there.
“You’re thinking way too hard for someone who just woke up.”
I smile, my heart filling with such unadulterated tenderness for the wide blue eyes that soon trap me in their gaze. A grin pulls at my sweetheart’s lips, her long, flowing strawberry blond hair falling every so delicately along her jaw and onto my chest as she traces the scar on
my stomach.
“I thought you were sleeping,” I whisper, my lips pressing against hers as my hands grasp the thick globes of her ass. Holding her tight against my side, I kiss her. Softly, ever so slowly, memorizing every single thing about her lips and the way they make me feel.
Perfection. Pure perfection.
When she pulls back, her eyes darken a bit as she throws her leg across me, straddling me as her nails bite into my chest. “I’m not sleeping,” she says, her cheeks dusting with color as I drink in the gorgeous freckles along her body. She is covered head to toe in them, and I swear, I want nothing more than to spend the rest of my days tracing each of them with my tongue, my fingers, anything. As long as I’m touching her.
My love.
As she moves her hot center against my growing erection, I smile. “I can see that.” My hand comes up to cup her full breast. “Whatever are you doing up there?”
She scoffs, her wet core making every single thought from before disappear within seconds. “If you have to ask, I worry for ya,” she jokes, and I smile, my eyes falling shut a bit.
Her voice, her thick Scottish brogue, does the dirtiest things to my body. Turns me on to the point of no return.
“I thought you had to leave?”
“I think I have a wee bit of time. Maybe we can spend it?”
Bringing her down by a hand at the back of her neck, I kiss her jaw as her breasts press into my chest. “I know we can,” I say before rolling her over, my body pressing into hers as I push her legs back into her chest and enter her quickly. She is hot, accepting me and squeezing me, making me breathless as I stare down into her beautiful, flushed face.
She stuns me, and I just look at her, my lips curving as my cock throbs inside of her, begging for release. But I can’t move. Not when she is looking at me like that. She reaches up, a grin pulling at her lips as she runs her thumb down my jaw.
“Gonna stare at me, my love? Or fuck me?”
“Stare,” I say simply, my body heavy against her legs. “I swear I’ve never seen anyone as beautiful as you.”
Her grin grows, her body flushing even more, and my heart explodes in my chest.
Cupping my face with her other hand, she threads her fingers through my hair. My body breaks out in gooseflesh as she holds my gaze. When she looks at me, I know she doesn’t see the scars or the wounded flesh, the cut marks or the gunshot wounds. She sees me, her lover.
Because that’s all I can ever be.
“I love you, Oceanus,” she whispers, her eyes so dark, so full of lust, and of course, love.
Fuck, I love it when she says those words. Those three words that are ever so beautiful—but more tragic than one could think. Well, that is until I take over the Works. The moment that happens, which pray God is soon, I will marry my love. I will make her mine, I will put my child in her, and together we will lead the Works.
She will be my queen.
I don’t care that she is Taegan Conner, the princess of the wolves, because I don’t see her faction or even her family name.
I see her heart.
And it’s mine.
All mine.
Moving her hair out of her eyes, I kiss her nose before sliding mine against it. “I love you too, my love.”
When her mouth captures mine, I lift her up, holding her ass in my hands as I fall back on my haunches, thrusting up into her. Her breath is harsh against my mouth, her breasts heavy against my chest, and as I drive into her, I don’t care about anything but her and me.
I’m being selfish.
I’m taking what I want.
And I don’t care one bit.
It doesn’t happen enough in my opinion, but I guess, being me, I don’t get that luxury.
Truth be told, being Oceanus von Stein isn’t easy.
But it’s who I am. And while I lose myself inside of this beautiful woman, I don’t think of anything but her, and that’s okay for now.
Eventually, I’ll be able to do it for the rest of my days.
I just have to be patient.
Because my time is coming.

My name is Toni Aleo and I’m a total dork.
I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?

“I love being with you,” Wyatt says as if he’d read my thoughts.

I squeeze his hand. “I love being with you, too. We have fun together, right?”

“Always, Trinity.” He stops and glances down at me with a serious expression. “Not just the sex—although, that’s fucking awesome.”

“Fuck yeah, it is,” I tease, jabbing my finger in his gut. That was stupid. His stomach’s like a brick wall. “Ow. I think I broke a nail.”

“Nutty girl.” He tugs me along a faint path through the woods. The trail follows a small stream, and I keep stopping to see if there are any fish.

“We don’t have any poles,” Wyatt says, stopping to check the water with me.

“What, you can’t play Tarzan and catch one with your bare hands for me?”

He busts up laughing. “I can, if that’s what you want.” He stops and pulls me close. “What do you think about owning a cabin up here? Like this one?”

“We just built a house. You want to move here?” Is he suggesting leaving the club? I can’t imagine Wyatt wanting to do that.

“No. A vacation place. To get away from everything when we need to.”

“Oh. Sure,” I say off the cuff, certain he’s not serious, but his next words knock me sideways.

“It would make a nice wedding present for my girl.”

“What? Did you…is it ours?”

“Not yet. I wanted to see if we liked it first. The owner’s had it on the market for a while, so I think we can get it for a good price.”

The way he keeps saying we, even though I haven’t really done anything to contribute to our finances, I don’t know, it does something to me. It’s a silly thing to fixate on at the moment, but I can’t help it.

“I love it here. But I love wherever we go as long as we’re together.”

He gives me a soft smile and kisses my forehead.

“Really, Wyatt. Whatever you want is fine by me.”

“I’ve seen the pictures of your dream house on the beach,” he teases.

“Mmm…a hut in Belize where you can run around in a loin cloth all day would be perfection,” I joke back.

His mouth lifts into a sexy smirk. “That might be a little out of our price range right now.”

“Cabin in the woods works for me, too. I’ll follow you anywhere.”

He takes my hand again. We traipse through the woods together, enjoying the quiet. My stomach growls and I’m about to tell Wyatt I want to head back, when he suddenly stops.

“What?” I giggle and he shushes me.All the fun is sucked right out of our morning.

1. Have loud parties late at night
2. Refuse to mow his lawn
3. Steal your newspapers
4. Rip your heart out and walk all over it

Katya Tocci is willing to admit that she may have bitten off more than she could chew.

Liam Edenhoff showed her a side of life she’d been missing out on – sex and friendship and tacos. But then he betrayed her.

Wulfric Stone taught her that big surprises can come from unexpected places – like from a surly, aggressive, withdrawn bastard. But then he broke her heart.

Now one of them wants forgiveness, and the other wants forever. And Katya? She just wants to forget.

Who knew neighbors could be so difficult?

This story contains scenes of a graphic sexual nature, multiple uses of coarse language, and quite possibly enough confusion to drive a normal person insane. Reader discretion is advised.

“Have you eaten?” he asked.
“How did you get in here?” she ignored his question and asked her own.
“I have access to the keys for every building we manage. Are you really meeting that thing for dinner?” he asked again.
“Okay, first of all, ‘that thing’ is a seriously good looking, very successful, and ridiculously nice man – a man who has yet to lie to me and use me,” she pointed out.
“Key word being ‘yet’.”
“And second of all, I know for a fact my lease states you have to give me twenty-four hour notice before you just barge in here. If you come in again without my permission, I’m gonna file a complaint,” she warned him. He laughed. Actually laughed. Something Wulfric Stone didn’t do very often. She took a deep breath and looked away from his broad smile.
“Please do. I’ll direct my HR department to hand deliver it to my desk so I can deal with it
personally.”
“Are we done here? I have things to do today that don’t involve dealing with you,” she snapped. He stepped closer to her.
“You might be even funner now than you were before.”
“That’s not funny, and if you can’t realize that, then there is literally no hope for you.”
“Ah, implying there is hope.”
“Shut up.”
“Feisty. I love it.”
“I talked to Vieve,” she blurted out. That finally stopped him.
“Oh, really,” was all he said.
“Yup. Went to your place, had a cup of coffee with her,” she said. That seemed to actually surprise him.
“You were in my home?” he checked.
“Yes. Apparently, I could’ve been spending lots of time there. Very generous of you to give me complete access,” she said. He didn’t react, though she noticed the tendon in the side of his neck was taut and straining.
“Yes, well, I’ve met you. I knew if you ever showed up, it would be a huge hassle with the front desk calling my office and you calling my cell phone and me having to drive across town.
Was just easier that way.”
“Sure. Okay.”
“And how was the coffee? I have it imported.”
Katya stared at the tight tendon for a moment longer. He was so good at putting on a false front, she knew. Looking calm and collected. After all, this was a man who ate million dollar real estate deals before breakfast.
But it was all fake. He was nervous. Deep down, she could tell. Being forceful was just his way of barreling through a problem he didn’t actually want to deal with – he could just strong arm her into doing what he wanted. No unnecessary awkwardness. That was Wulf’s M.O.
Yeah, well, my M.O. is to make him feel as awkward as humanly possible.
“I can’t go to breakfast with you,” she stated, brushing past him and heading down the hallway. He didn’t hesitate to follow behind her.
“No shit, it’s afternoon – it’s too late for brunch, even. But that Brazilian food cart is open for lunches now, we’re going -” he started, but she waved her hand over her shoulder as she moved into her bedroom.
“I can’t, I’m busy this afternoon. I have to go shopping for a new stove – don’t worry, I’ll have the bill sent to you,” she joked, turning around and standing in the doorway to her room.
He glared down at her.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I’ll talk to maintenance, we can get a new stove in by the end of the
week,” he assured her.
“Whatever. I have other plans.”
“Tocci, I’m not -”
“But how about dinner?” she offered.
That seemed to shock him. He stood still for moment, his eyes wandering over her face.
Obviously trying to figure out if she was lying. She offered him a big smile, and that just seemed to throw him even more off guard. He finally narrowed his eyes.
“If I make reservations, you’ll be downstairs on time?” he checked.
“No,” she shook her head. “But I can meet you there.”
“Bullshit. You’ll stand me up, and I’m not wasting my time, sitting around like an asshole waiting for you,” he said.
“I won’t, I promise. I have … a client I’m dealing with this afternoon. I don’t know how long it will take,” she told him.
“What about your dinner date with your darling handyman?” he asked. She shrugged.
“I’ll figure something out, don’t worry about it. I’ll have dinner with you.”
“You promise?” he checked, still glaring down at her. She nodded and ran her fingers across her chest in an X motion.
“Cross my heart.”
“Fine. But don’t fuck with me, Tocci. You won’t like it if I have to come and find you. We have a lot to discuss,” he informed her. She nodded.
“I’m sure we do. What’s the dress code?” she asked. Wulf was a 3-Michelin-stars kind of restaurant goer when it came to dinner dates.
“A dress,” he informed her, and then his gaze wandered over her shoulder. She had some clothes laying around on the floor, littered about on the bed. She was gearing up to do laundry. “If you’d like to try on some options, I’d be more than happy to sit and help.”
Katya laughed and slid her hands up either side of the door frame. Wulf followed the motion with his eyes, which grew wide when she leaned towards him.
“Mmmm, that would be fun, wouldn’t it?” she chuckled.
“Possibly.”
“And it’s been a very long time since you’ve been in my bedroom,” she reminded him. He nodded.
“It has.”
“And we never got to have any real fun in here, did we?” she sighed, glancing back at her bed.
“No. No, we did it not.”
“It must make you wonder, though,” she said, dropping her hands and stepping back into the room.
“Wonder what?”
“What kind of fun Liam and I used to have in here.”
There was a split second where she got to see equal parts anger and shock ripple across his features.
Then she slammed the door in his face.

Fletcher

“You’re Fletcher, aren’t you?” a tall blonde with legs that go on for miles asks, resting her hand on my shoulder. Logan smiles with a look that says you’ve pulled tonight. She is pretty tidy looking, but has overdone it in the make-up department. I rake my eyes in appreciation over her body. Curves in all the right places, and those tits, bloody hell…I could have a lot of fun with those as I slide between them, but of course, they’re probably fake.

“Yeah,” I say, even though I shouldn’t, but I’m sure the rest of the guys are loving the female attention they’re getting. “Drinks all around,” I call out.

The bartender smiles as he looks at our company. Even he has an idea of how tonight will end.

The blonde tells me her name, but I don’t take any notice. I don’t want to remember her name in the morning, or whenever I creep out of her bed. Makes it easier that way. As the alcohol flows freely, the blonde keeps trying to persuade me to get on the dance floor with her. She seems the type that wouldn’t mind putting on one hell of a floor show. I might be on the drunk side now, but I’m still cautious. I’ve definitely learned my lesson over the years; you just never know who is lurking around, ready to get pictures. She can do what she wants for me in private later on, though.

EXCERPT:

“What happened to us, Lincoln? Where did things go wrong?” she mutters uneasily. Tears slowly find their way down her cheeks.
“I wish I had the answer, but I don’t.” My voice wavers.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep doing this. I’m losing myself.
I hate who I’ve become,” she shakes her head regretfully.
“I hate that I’m hurting you.”
I get up and sit next to her. I place my hand under her chin, lifting her face so I can see her. “I love you. You know that, don’t you?”
“I know you love me. That’s never been the problem.” Her faint smile holds a touch of sadness.
How do two people that love each other repair what has been broken? Can we? Seeing her sad is breaking me. I’m such a dumbass for not realizing how much she’s hurting watching her best friend get something she wants so bad.
Something that I’m not willing to give her.
The ride home takes about an hour with the city traffic this time of night. With Morgan’s hand clasped with mine we enter my apartment. The sound of the door shutting echoes in the living room. I turn the lock and toss my keys on the table next to the door.
I follow Morgan in to the bedroom. I lean down and place a gentle kiss against her lips. The touch of her lips is a delicious sensation. I raise my mouth from hers and gaze into her eyes. Christian was right. They are sad. How haven’t I noticed how much this is affecting her?
She pushes up against me to meet my lips again. Morgan showers kisses around my lips and along my jaw. Her breath smells sweet, like the fruity cocktail she was drinking at the wedding reception. The kisses are slow and sensual that drive me wild. My mouth swoops down to capture hers. She parts her lips granting me access to her tongue. Her tongue tastes sugary. My lips recapture hers, more demanding this time.
I pull away from her and gaze into her dark brown eyes. My hands make their way to her face, cupping her cheeks. “I love you, Morgan,” I say against her hips.
She bites her lip, and a groan passes through my lips. My chest heaves uncontrollably. It’s been a few weeks since we’ve been intimate.
Slowly my fingertips pull the zipper of her dress. Once it reaches the bottom, her strapless dress falls to the floor. Her flawless body stands before be in a lacey black strapless bra and matching thong.
I gently outline her nipples, causing her to suck in a quick breath. Her nipples harden immediately from being teased. I gradually work my way to the clasp at the back undoing it. Her bra falls to the floor and I can’t help but lean down and take her nipple into my mouth.
Her hands pull on my hair. I press kisses, feathery and light, followed by little love bites as I make my way down her body. Morgan shivers and arches against me. I guide her toward the bed until the back of her thighs hit the mattress.
“Lie down.”
Morgan complies and I take her breast into my mouth and suck hard. She moans, when I bite her nipple.
When I look up, I see a mark on her breast. I sucked a little too hard.
I should feel bad, but I don’t. Instead, I feel proud. Possessive. I love leaving my mark on Morgan.
I rip her panties off and throw them to the side.
Morgan gasps and looks down at me. “They were brand new,” she says angrily.
“They were in the way… I’ll buy you new ones.”
I continue to torture her with kisses along her stomach, her hip, then her thighs. My hands stroke the inside of her thigh. I explore the sexy curves that lead to her tight little ass.
“Stop teasing me,” she pleads.
When I find her clit, I suck on her sensitive bud. She cries out and grips my hair and grinds against my face.
I lick her, kiss her, torture her with my mouth until she is chanting my name.
“Lincoln, oh, God.”
I smile as I bite her clit, then suck on it.
“Don’t stop. Just like that.” Her orgasm hits her hard. She pulls my face against her and grinds against my face. Her other hand grips the sheet as she cries out.
Her back arches off the bed and her body trembles.
I don’t give her time to recover as I make my way up her body, trailing kisses along the way.
“Who do you belong to, Morgan? Tell me.” My voice low and demanding.
“You,” she moans “Always, you.” Her voice unsteady. She closes her eyes.
“Look at me, don’t close your eyes. I need to see your eyes. You need to know who is doing this to you.”
She blinks, then her eyes blaze up at me.
“I’ll fight for you. Don’t give up on us.” I kiss the tip of her nose and climb off the bed to quickly undress.

Logan

Her ankle turns, and Kass starts to fall. One swift move, and I scoop her up, into my arms.

“Oh!” she cries, gripping my biceps.

Her soft body is pressed against me, and her face is right at my chin. Her breath comes in quick pants, causing her breasts to rise and fall just beneath the thin material of her dress. With her sweater pushed back, I can see she’s not wearing a bra, and all the lust I’ve been fighting shoots straight to my cock.

I know she feels it. Her lids lower, and her eyes are trained on my mouth. Her lips part, and I can just see the tips of her white teeth when she speaks, low and breathless. “Thank you.”

Desire overrules my brain, and I don’t stop myself. I pull her to me, covering her mouth with mine. It’s not a gentle kiss. It’s rough and punishing. It’s all the anger and the hurt and the worry she’s put me through these last days.

She meets me with equal strength. Her mouth moves with mine, and she tastes like mint and cool water. A little noise aches from her throat and fuck me, my dick gets harder. She’s soft in my arms, and my stomach fills with warmth, desire, possession.

How can I still want her so badly? She used me.

Breaking our lips apart, I look up at the sky. It’s thick with grey, swirling clouds. It mirrors the storm in my chest.

Kass’s forehead drops to my neck. She’s panting, and I feel her beaded nipples against my chest. I want to pull them into my mouth and suck them until she moans. I want to lower my pants and lift her skirt. I want to shove her panties aside and fuck her right here on this beach. I want it to be hard and angry. I want her begging me to forgive her, begging me for more.

I can see the whole thing, and it takes all my willpower to step back.

“I’m sorry.” I hold her arms until I’m sure she has her balance, until I’m back in control. “I’ll escort you to the house.”

“Yes.” Her voice is breathless.

EXCERPT:

Eve stood still as Sam took everything off.

Everything.

She tried not to look. But on the sunny deck of the Bravado, buck naked and shameless, Sam had the body of a Greek god.

He was big and scruffy and aggressively masculine. His heavy jaw was covered in shadow and he wore his dark, wavy hair a little long. This theme carried down to his chest and torso, but not even a healthy coat of dark hair could hide the sharply defined muscles of his pecs and abs. His nipples, one shade darker than his tanned skin, were tiny. A thin trail of hair led down his torso, dividing the muscles of his six-pack before widening and gathering past his shallow belly button.

She didn’t dare look lower.

“The next part is kind of gross,” he said.

He took a bottle of hair conditioner and squirted some in his hand. He rubbed it all over his body like lotion until his skin glistened in the sunlight and the air filled with the ladylike scent of fresh herbs and strawberries.

“What’s that for?” she asked, pretending to look at the instrument panel. Her skin tingled as if his hands were on her body instead.

“It helps me get my suit on easier.” He grabbed his wetsuit and pulled it on up to his waist. The black neoprene clung to his rock-hard thighs and round ass. When he turned around, Eve caught the outline of his enormous package before she could look away again.

“Hand me my mask, will you?” he asked.

It hung inside the wheelhouse. As Eve handed it to him, he made eye contact with her. His unusual mismatched eyes seemed to burn into hers, and in an instant, she sensed he was trying to get a rise out of her.

Jackass.

PLAYLIST:

Music from DEEP DOWN

When I came up with this playlist, I imagined a busted-up radio playing on Sam’s old fishing boat as it bobbed up and down in the Pacific. I imagined Eve and her roommate Tiffani goofing around while pole dancing. Eve spent many years in Japan, so I’ve included a song she might like. I pictured Sam visiting his cowboy hometown in the Central Valley. Most of all, I remembered what it felt like to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway for the first time, windows down, my heart full of sea air and sunshine. Hope you enjoy the music!

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I thoroughly enjoyed Deep Down. Mia Hopkins gave us characters that were likable, interesting and they both had faced difficulties that had left them a little bit broken.

There was an attraction from the first time they encountered each other but holy hell, when this pair actually got it on they were smoking hot…. nah, that doesn’t come anywhere near what they are when they get down and dirty – and they got dirty a lot, A Lot, A LOT!!!!!

Deep Down was well written, as I’ve come to expect from Mia. I really like the description and detail in her books and the imagery her stories invoke. There was humour, heat, some family drama, a bit of a bump in the road and a cast of supporting characters (good and bad) that all added up to a really well rounded, engaging read.

The only little thing I would say is that I would have liked was an earlier explanation of what happened in Sam’s past that had him so full of doubt and made him feel ‘less’ than he was and the epilogue, while I enjoyed it, I would have liked to know more about what happened came about.

Overall a great read and the start of a series that I’m looking forward to reading more of.

I’ve giving Deep Down 4.5 down and dirty stars.

~twenty-four years ago

Nick pressed two fingers into the sleep deprived headache pounding in his temple and tried to concentrate on professor Jenkins’s explanation of ideal gas law. He circled a line of notes, ignored the knock on the auditorium door until he heard the familiar cry. Hannah, who he’d left in the university daycare two hours ago.

The high pitched wail wasn’t his two year old sister’s hurt cry. It was her scared cry with a touch of pissed off. In the six months since their parents’ death, he’d learned to tell the difference. He’d learned a lot of things. Like if he didn’t take her to the bathroom, she’d likely wait too long and have an accident. Like green beans made her throw up, but she’d eat them if he told her to. And she would never, ever go to sleep without Mr. Bunny.

He was up, out of his seat, and halfway down the auditorium stairs before his professor laid his pen down.

Nick’s eyes narrowed on the young blonde in an oversized sweatshirt with silk greek letters sewn on the front. She held a sobbing Hannah dressed in the sunny yellow sundress he’d picked out that morning. She hadn’t been crying when he left her. Now her eyes were red and snot mixed with tears dripped into her mouth. Hannah lunged for him. His arms engulfed her small body and his heart squeezed like it always did when she held onto him.

“I stay you,” Hannah said. Each word tumbled out of her with a jerk of her tiny shoulders.

“What happened to her?”

“Nothing happened to her. She hasn’t stopped screaming for the past hour and she bit three people. We can’t keep her like that.”

Several responses came to mind.

She’s just a baby.

She missed her nap.

And the loudest of all, it was my fault for leaving her.

Hannah raised her head to look at him, giant tears hanging from golden lashes. “I bite.”

“Well. At least she’s honest.” Professor Jenkins turned his questioning eyes to Nick. “She yours?”

He hesitated, but only a second. “My sister. But yes, she’s mine.” And at that moment she became even more his, which seemed to be the case every day. Every day, a little more his.

When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family.

A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family.

A band of brothers, where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood.

When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood.

I’ve spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt.

My name is Daniel Johnson. I have betrayed everyone I ever loved.

And I’ll betray her too.

This is my story—if you’re screwed up enough to want to read it.

“You gotta let go now, princess. I gotta hand you over.”Her panicked gaze meets mine. “He’ll shoot you.”

“No, he won’t.”

“Yes, he will.”

I smile down at her. “What are we just gonna stand here forever, you in my arms, your dad holding a gun to my head? If he shoots me, he shoots me. Ain’t nothing I can do about that, princess. At least I’ll know I did one thing right.”

She takes a deep, shaky breath. “I’d be dead if it weren’t for you.”

I nod because it’s true. If Slayer hadn’t come at a deal, Prez would’ve eventually killed her, and he’d have tortured her some more first. “Promise me somethin’?”

“What?”

“Get on your feet and then get the hell outta here. Prez will come looking for you again. He’s not a guy who likes to lose. Take as much money as you can, and get the fuck away from this life. Otherwise you’re gonna wind up filling a body bag way too young.”

Lauren is wrenched away from me then. She screams as the Italian carts her off toward the clubhouse, flailing and slapping at him despite her injuries.

“Daniel!” she screams, reaching out toward me as he struggles to get her inside. Without thinking I take a step forward, but I’m attacked from behind. My knees go out from under me, and I’m shoved face-first into the ground.

On some level, I think that part of him, that abused kid carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, he’s still in there, and he calls out to the fragile, broken girl inside me. His demons rage and roar at my own, and when we’re here in bed like this, joined, our bodies grown soft with pleasure and lethargy, I think they even quiet one another. They soothe the wrath, the want to hurt, and be hurt, and they just … are. Like wild beasts snarling in the darkness, baring their jagged teeth and claws, eventually they find a middle ground, reach an impasse, and they curl up together and just be still.

And it’s enough.

We are enough.
