I’m Susan Alexander, and you’ll find my books under S.B. Alexander. A little about me. I’ve been writing since 2012 and started with writing all about vampires. After the second vampire book, I began to branch out in New Adult Romance. I love to read mostly all genres, and I’m always game to try something new. So I tested my hand at writing romantic suspense and just loved it. So you’ll find I write in several different sub-genres of romance.

In between writing, I spend time with my soul mate of 20 years who got a bad deal in life. Three years ago he was diagnosed with ALS. It’s a horrible disease, but we both have been making the best of life, laughing, smiling, and doing what we can together.
But writing is a great outlet for me to take my mind to another place. Plus, I have a great network of family, friends, fans, and so much more. I truly have an angel on my shoulder. My mantra is make the best of life because it’s too darn short.

SYNOPSIS

From the moment Julie sees her best friend, Gavin, in the airport, itโ€™s like no time at all has gone by instead of months and months. No matter how long theyโ€™ve been apart, their relationship has always been steady, comfortable, and decidedly just friends. Even though their meddling parents have hung what seems like unlimited amounts of mistletoe everywhere she goes this holiday season, Julie knows some things will never change.

Gavin is well-aware his familyโ€™s wanted him and Julie to get together since forever, even though heโ€™s been friend-zoned since they could talkโ€”and heโ€™s been happy to play that role. After all, as the new starting quarterback for the San Antonio Mustangs, heโ€™s got enough on his plate without adding romance to the mix.

But between playing elves in the holiday bazaar to nights spent one-on-one watching rom-coms or soaking in their townโ€™s hot springs, suddenly the โ€œreverse parent trapโ€ theyโ€™ve fallen into is actually starting to work. But this could be one scheme where letting themselves get trapped might be way too dangerous.

Each book in the Heart in the Game series is STANDALONE:

* The Wedding Deal

* The Mistletoe Trap

Excerpt

The rapid rise and fall of her chest as her breath quickened wasnโ€™t helping his tactical skills. After a couple of seconds, she picked out a single M&M and demanded him to open up. Expecting a trap, his muscles coiled, ready to spring, but he did as instructed.

After firingโ€”and landingโ€”one in his mouth, she tossed the rest into hers and crunched on the candies. โ€œBetween the marshmallows and M&Ms, I think weโ€™re safe.โ€

Interesting. He felt anything but safe right now. He closed the gap between them with one long stride and arched an eyebrow. โ€œIs that your way of calling a truce?โ€

She nodded. โ€œTruce.โ€ Her chin lifted a couple more inches so she could peer at his face, keying him in to the fact that he was looming over her. Surprising how all that attitude, humor, kindness, and scientific knowledge could be packed into such a tiny body.

A short, curvy body that kept causing his pulse to thunder and his common sense to go on a vacation of its own. Had time halted or was this one of those moments of clarity that held enough weight to draw it out longer?

His gaze dipped to her lips. Whoever was in control of his body lifted his arm. He pressed his thumb to the corner of her mouth and used it to wipe away the frosting thatโ€™d stuck there.

โ€œOh jeez.โ€ Her tongue darted out, swiping that same spot heโ€™d touched, and he just stood there, unable to move. โ€œPretty sure thatโ€™s evidence enough that I fail at being sexy. And maybe I have to accept thatโ€™s just not one of my sides or whatever. But come on, Iโ€™m hardly boring.โ€

Her eyes sought his, as if she needed confirmation.

On impulse, he lifted his thumb to his own mouth and sucked it clean of the frosting.

Sugary-sweet, just like her.

Her lips parted with a ragged breath, and regardless of the fuzziness thatโ€™d invaded his entire body, he needed to say somethingโ€”without giving away too much.

โ€œIโ€™ve never been bored with you, thatโ€™s for sure.โ€ He swallowed, hard. โ€œAs for that other part, I think we have some sexy pills around here somewhere. One bite and the spell some asshole put on you to make you think something so foolish will be broken.โ€

Blindly he reached back, aiming for the bowls of candy. Only his hand found frosting instead. โ€œDamn it,โ€ he muttered, shaking off bits of the green goop that looked remarkably like the face mask Julie had forced upon him the other night. So much for his smooth delivery. โ€œThat was supposed to go differently. The point is, itโ€™s all in your head, babe. Youโ€™re really sexy. Just trust me on that.โ€

For several seconds, he didnโ€™t think she would respond. Was she even breathing? Blinking? Had the poisonous mistletoe cookies kicked in?

The silence was nearing frantic territory when her eyes flicked to the green frosting on his fingertips. He was about to wipe the mess on his pants, but then her fingers circled his wrist. She lifted his arm and studied his hand like sheโ€™d never seen one before.

Another inch higher, and time ground to a halt as she flicked her tongue over the pad of his greenest fingertip. โ€œSince you helped me with my frosting issue,โ€ she rasped.

With his hand already poised next to the lower lip he couldnโ€™t stop obsessing over, he gave in to the urge to drag his thumb over it, the softness and the accompanying dilating pupils completely hypnotizing.

A heated exhale whispered across his wrist as he continued down, down, down until his palm rested against the side of her neck.

โ€œLooks like I didnโ€™t quite get it all, though.โ€ He drew her closer, eradicating all but the last inch of space between their mouths. He held the intimate position for a beat, giving her a chance to pull away if she wanted to. Then he angled his head and flicked his tongue over the corner that was perfectly clean but hadnโ€™t been taste-tested yet.

โ€œWell, now you have some on your lip.โ€ Her tongue darted out, the tip barely hitting the seam of his mouth. The low mmm noise that followed the featherlight touch left his throat sandpaper dry.

Usually Julie was the one who analyzed, applied logic, and kept them out of trouble. He should return the favor, but a haze of lust shrouded his mind, and instead of attempting to clear it, he wanted to sink in and live in this dream for a while.

The world narrowed to her mouth and his, and then he was guiding her face to his, testing the limits of their dangerous game.

The fuse on his nerve endings lit up like a sparkler, burning fast and bright. She parted her lips, and boom. No going back after an explosion like that.

Title: Snowed in With the Firefighter

Author: Victoria James

Genre: Holiday Romance

About Snowed In With the Firefighter:

Dr. Melody Mayberryโ€™s life just took a turn thatโ€™s left her questioning everything. Where better to hide out than the remote family cabin in the mountains? The last thing she expects to find there is her swoon-worthy brother-in-law, the one man who may have more baggage than her.

Finn Matthews is not ready to face the fact that the recent injury he sustained in a fire may have ended his firefighting career. Heโ€™s not interested in sharing the cabin with anyone, let alone Melody, and their family just texted with yet another unwelcome surpriseโ€”theyโ€™ll be there Christmas Eve.

To keep their meddling family at bay, the two team up to fake a little holiday cheer. But between ridiculously competitive Monopoly games, marathon Christmas decorating, and a storm that strands them together with nothing but a fire and a warm couch, they realize something majorโ€”their fake holiday cheer isnโ€™t feeling so fake anymore, and thatโ€™s something neither of these two Grinches expected…

Exclusive Excerpt:

โ€œChristmas with all of them? Decorating? He pointed at Melody with his coffee mug. โ€œThis is your fault. You canโ€™t just go around saying our worst nightmares out loud and expect them not to happen.โ€

She gasped. โ€œThatโ€™s ridiculous. And not at all how the world works.โ€

He shook his head. โ€œYou believe what you want. Weโ€™re stuck either way. The worst part is theyโ€™re allโ€ฆโ€ He grimaced. โ€œNice. Like, too nice. And over-the-top happy. And this is their cabin, so we canโ€™t even say no.โ€

She groaned. โ€œI know. They probably think theyโ€™re doing us a favor. We have no choice. Other than just run away, which is still a possibility, but thatโ€™s too obvious at this point. I guess weโ€™re doing Christmas and we have to fake being happy.โ€

He frowned. โ€œIโ€™m happy.โ€

She tilted her head, her eyes narrowing on him. โ€œYouโ€™re about as happy as I am.โ€

โ€œFine. But I wouldnโ€™t say Iโ€™m that bad.โ€

Her mouth dropped open. โ€œWhat is that supposed to mean?โ€

He sipped his coffee slowly, deliberating whether or not he wanted to start an argument or end this conversation. If he ever hoped to get her to open up, an argument probably wasnโ€™t the way to go. โ€œIโ€™m just saying, you seem really unhappy, and it seems like Iโ€™m not the only one who thinks that. Everyone must. Thatโ€™s why theyโ€™re coming up here. They probably already assumed you wouldnโ€™t go back for Christmas.โ€

โ€œHow do you know this is about me? If I were them, Iโ€™d be more worried about the person whoโ€™s been locked away up here for months,โ€ she said with a triumphant little smirk, which he found inexplicably adorable.

He grunted. โ€œWell, when they get here, theyโ€™ll see just how happy I am.โ€

She shook her head and crossed the kitchen, grabbing a notepad and a bunch of different-colored pens from her purse. He straightened up, worried, as she started writing. โ€œWhat is all that?โ€

โ€œPlanning. Faking happiness and Christmas cheer takes a lot of work. No one will believe us. No one will believe you, especially with that beard. So now weโ€™re going to start a list of things to decorate and get ready so no one thinks weโ€™re miserable. We have three days to get happy.โ€

He walked over to the island. โ€œCanโ€™t a man let his facial hair grow without constant commentary? This doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m miserable.โ€

She gave him a side-eyed glance and continued with her notes. โ€œYou need to shave it off. They wonโ€™t stop bothering you until you do.โ€

He turned his attention to what she was writing. The page was divided into columns, and the heading for the first column was Happy Decorations in red ink, underlined a few times.

The next column was Happy Food.

He didnโ€™t even know what was happening anymore. โ€œI didnโ€™t know there was happy food.โ€

She paused and gave him a pitiful glance. โ€œOf course, because youโ€™re not happy. Hot chocolate, eggnog, gingerbread cookiesโ€ฆoh, marshmallows for the hot chocolateโ€”happy people love adding thoseโ€”and we should get some kind of pre-fab gingerbread house for Isabella.โ€

โ€œI think happy people make them from scratch,โ€ he said, just to bother her.

She shook her head, still writing. โ€œWe donโ€™t have time.โ€

โ€œNone of that stuff is going to make people think weโ€™re happy,โ€ he said, pointing to the ridiculous list.

She put down her pen with a theatrical sigh and turned to him. โ€œDo you have a better idea? I mean, the only thing Iโ€™ve heard out of you since we got the text is blaming me for bringing the family down onto us and your self-consciousness about your beard. Weโ€™re stuck in this situation together, so it would be really nice to have some cooperation. Think outside the box. Like, look at this chart Iโ€™m making. I think we should make more coffee and brainstorm.โ€

He was barely following her train of thought. โ€œWhat? Iโ€™m not making a chart on how to be happy, Melody. I know how to be happy. Iโ€™m a very happy person. No color coding in the world is going to make me look happier,โ€ he snapped.

She gave him a side-eye and a smirk. โ€œSure. So happy.โ€

He ran his hand over his beard and forced himself to not sound irritated. โ€œAlso, Iโ€™m not self-conscious about my beard.โ€

She raised a brow and picked up a green pen. He had the uncontrollable urge to grab all the pens and throw them in the snow.

โ€œYou know what this is?โ€ he asked, wondering how he hadnโ€™t seen this all along.

She finished her coffee and let the pen fall from her hands before crossing her arms over her chest and turning to him again. โ€œLetโ€™s hear it. Hopefully, it involves shaving the beard.โ€

He frowned and ignored that comment. โ€œWell, you know how theyโ€™re all sitting there plotting about us. Trying to set us up?โ€

She frowned. โ€œNo, I donโ€™t think so. I think they got the message. Nothing would ever happen between us.โ€

He took a step closer to her, slightly irked that she felt that way. โ€œFine. Wishful thinking. Benโ€™s trying to get me back because this is what I did when Molly moved to Shadow Creek.โ€

Her mouth dropped open. โ€œYou set them up and meddled?โ€

He shrugged. โ€œYeah, it was pretty bad. I literally threw him under the bus. Our mother was coming out of surgery, and I told her they were engaged. Iโ€™m basically responsible for their entire relationship.โ€

She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. โ€œIโ€™m sure thatโ€™s a gross exaggeration. But anywayโ€ฆso? What does this have to do with us?โ€

โ€œBen and Molly must actually think they can do the same thing to us. What I did took talent. The whole idea is ridiculous. Way too much snooping in our lives. They wonโ€™t let you go away for the holidays and run from whatever it is youโ€™re running from, Iโ€™m not allowed to grow facial hair without a doctorโ€™s note, and then they make it obvious theyโ€™re trying to set us up. Clearly the only logical thing for us to do is actually pretend their dumb trick worked.โ€ He leaned back and grinned. โ€œWe pretend to be a couple for the holidays.โ€

She choked on her coffee. โ€œAre you kidding me?โ€ she managed in a strangled voice, her eyes wide.

He wasnโ€™t sure whether he should laugh or be insulted. โ€œWhy would I lie about this? Think about it: weโ€™ll get the ultimate victory when Christmas is over, and we tell them it was all a joke. As if you and I would ever get together.โ€

About the Author:

Victoria James is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of contemporary romance.

Victoria always knew she wanted to be a writer and in grade five, she penned her first story, bound it (with staples and a cardboard cover) and did all the illustrations herself. Luckily, this book will never see the light of day again.

In high school she fell in love with historical romance and then contemporary romance. After graduating University with an English Literature degree, Victoria pursued a degree in Interior Design and then opened her own business. After her first child, Victoria knew it was time to fulfill her dream of writing romantic fiction.

Victoria is a hopeless romantic who is living her dream, penning happily-ever-after’s for her characters in between managing kids and the family business. Writing on a laptop in the middle of the country in a rambling old Victorian house would be ideal, but she’s quite content living in suburbia with her husband, their two young children, and very bad cat.

Eric
I live my life by a certain standard. There are right and wrong ways to do things, and I always make sure that I’m on the right side. My brothers call me a wet blanket. They say I’m buttoned-up, boring, and that I don’t know how to let loose. There’s a reason I’m that way, and she just walked through my door. With one wild night, I’ve thrown all my moral guidelines out the window. Now I’m stuck with her and there’s no possible way this could work between us. We’re complete opposites in every way, but damn she’s sexy. Not that it matters. There will never be more between us. One of us will end up killing the other first.
Kat
After a long shift in the cancer ward at the children’s hospital, I just want to let loose. My friend set me up on a date, and I gladly took it to let off some steam. I’ve got a fun outfit and I’m ready to let loose. But my one night of fun was spoiled the minute he walked through that door. I was just looking for a good time, and I got him instead. He’s good-looking, but that’s about all that he has going for him. He’s not at all my type, and now he seems to think that I’m some loose whore. It was one night! But I’m stuck with him, so I have to find a way to make this work. If I don’t figure out a way to make the man loosen up, I’ll go insane.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Between reading, writing, and taking care of three small kids, my days are quite full.

EXCERPT
โ€œShall we test that theory, then?โ€
I jump at the sound of the sexy British accent coming from behind me in the next booth. Thereโ€™s a familiarity to his voice that catches me off guard, but I canโ€™t quite place where I know it from. I swallow, because Tara wasnโ€™t kidding about the accent thing and this guy sounds like a snack.
Oh shit. Tara. He mustโ€™ve been eavesdropping on our conversation.
โ€œWhat theory is that?โ€ I ask, both annoyed and embarrassed.
Then I tell myself off for getting ahead of myself, because I donโ€™t even know for sure he overheard our conversationโ€”
โ€œThe one where your will panties soak at the sound of my accent.โ€
Okay. Now Iโ€™m sure.
โ€œWhat, no response?โ€ he teases. โ€œWe can talk about something else if you want. Like how your friend abandoned you?โ€
โ€œSheโ€™s getting our drinks,โ€ I reply.
โ€œThis has got to be the longest drink collection in history,โ€ he remarks. โ€œAnd Iโ€™m pretty sure I saw her disappear around the back with the guy behind the bar.โ€
Iโ€™m not sure whether to believe him or not, but she has been gone awhile, and Iโ€™m more than a little worried sheโ€™s been kicked out for being underaged.
Me: Did you get caught?
Tara: Sorry. Distracted. Turns out Germans really do have long tongues ๐Ÿ˜‰
I groan inwardly and set my phone down on the table.
Way, way too much information.
โ€œYeah, sheโ€™s abandoned me,โ€ I grumble.
โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll join you, then.โ€
I sit straight upright, because suddenly, heโ€™s right there, sliding into my booth across from me. My eyes widen, because this isnโ€™t just some random guy trying to hit on me. Itโ€™s Ben, my brotherโ€™s best friend, the source of the rumors all those years ago, and the one person I didnโ€™t want to run into. Ever.
I silently curse Tara for choosing this bar of all places, and then I hold my breath and wait for the recognition to spark in his eyes, but it doesnโ€™t. I stare right at him and he smiles back, his lopsided grin enough to send my heart into overdrive. My heart thumps as it hits me.
He has no idea who I am.
โ€œAre you okay?โ€
I jump at the sound of his voice and force myself to nod.
That accent sounds so fake now that I know itโ€™s Ben. I have to stop myself from laughing. Is this what he does, hang around in bars, pretending to be someone he isnโ€™t just so he can pick up? I shiver at the thought of going home with him, because silly accent aside, heโ€™s still the sexiest thing Iโ€™ve ever seen.
Heโ€™s even hotter than he was the last time I saw him, which was almost six years ago. Those intense green eyes feel like theyโ€™re penetrating my soul and every now and then he casually rakes his long fingers through his dark, short cropped hair. When he rubs his lightly stubbled jaw, I lean forward as my nipples harden against the raw silk of my top.
โ€œCold?โ€ he smirks.
I go red.
He nods at my arms in explanation. โ€œGoosebumps.โ€
Oh.
โ€œIโ€™m Ben, by the way.โ€
โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆLouise,โ€ I finish, using my middle name instead of Liv.
โ€œLouise,โ€ he repeats, my name rolling off his tongue. I swallow, because my middle name has never sounded so sexy. โ€œSo, youโ€™re alone and Iโ€™m alone โ€ฆโ€
โ€œIt appears that way,โ€ I squeak.
โ€œSoโ€ฆโ€ His eyes meet mine. โ€œNo panties, huh?โ€
Oh god.
Iโ€™m so embarrassed. I look away and immediately wish I hadnโ€™t. My heart races as I spot Jake walking toward the exit. When he stops and turns around, I do the only thing I can think of; slide under the table until Iโ€™m on the floor, much to the amusement of Ben.
He peers down between his legs, a smirk on his lips, like heโ€™s trying to work out what the hell Iโ€™m doing. My face flames, because God only knows what heโ€™s thinkingโ€”probably that all his dreams are about to come true.
โ€œIโ€™m not going to lie, this has taken a turn I wasnโ€™t expecting,โ€ he admits.
โ€œDonโ€™t flatter yourself,โ€ I snap, my face even redder. โ€œI dropped an earring.โ€
Really? Thatโ€™s what Iโ€™m going with?
โ€œYou dropped an earring?โ€ he repeats, a bemused smile on his face. โ€œIs that even a thing? Do earrings really pop out at the most inconvenient of moments that leave you crouching between the legs of your date?โ€ He leans down so weโ€™re face to face. โ€œFunny, looks to me like you have both earrings where they should be.โ€
โ€œDate?โ€ I chortle, conveniently ignoring his observation. โ€œWhen did this become a date?โ€
โ€œWhen your friend abandoned you and I felt obligated to step in?โ€ he suggests.

Owen Riggins is too good to be true… the best things in life usually are. Heโ€™s good looking, generous, and interested in me. Too bad someone like him and someone like me arenโ€™t meant to be together.
Heโ€™s used to the best things in life, and Iโ€™ve grown up with the worst. Building a better life means working hard and staying on track, not falling for some sexy suit with a brooding stare who is just passing through.
Life has taught me not to trust, and even though I want him more than anything, I donโ€™t need his charity or his love…
Owen
When a friend sends me to Florida to scout out a hotel, itโ€™s the gorgeous waitress with the shy smile and the worn-out shoes I canโ€™t take my eyes off of.
Layla Massey is quiet, beautiful, and in need of a little helpโ€” even if she wonโ€™t admit it. A generous tip was meant to buy her some suitable shoes, not buy her love. I want to earn that all on my own.
Iโ€™m used to women throwing themselves at me, the name, the money… but she wants neither. It makes me want her all the more.
Little by little, she opens up and piece by piece, sheโ€™s taking my heart.
