BLOG TOUR ~ Cowboy Stole My Heart (A River Ranch Novel) by Soraya Lane

About the book

It takes true grit to build a billion-dollar dynasty like the Ford family ranch. But when it comes to finding love, all it takes is one handsome cowboy to steal a woman’s heart in Cowboy Stole My Heart by Soraya Lane.

SHE’S RIDING SOLO
As one of the heirs to the River Ranch fortune, Mia Ford is practically Texas royalty. But that doesn’t mean she’s some pampered princess. She can saddle up and ride a horse as well as any man, even a hard-working cowboy like Sam Mendes. For years, she’s harbored a crush on the strong, silent horseman. But how can she make a move when she’s his boss?

HE’S TAKING THE REINS
Sam Mendes is through with love—or so he thought. Still recovering from a breakup, he’s doing everything in his power to resist Mia Ford. It’s bad enough she’s the kind of beauty who drives men wild with desire. It’s even worse she’s got him so worked up, aching to kiss her lips, when he’s supposed to be working her ranch. Is this lovestruck cowboy willing to risk losing his job—and breaking his heart—to win the girl of his dreams?

Excerpt

Mia disappeared and he talked to the horses, wandering down the line to look at all of them. He’d only seen her ride the one, her favorite mare, but he had a feeling she was full of surprises, and her horses all looked impressive. When she didn’t reappear, Sam went looking for her, wondering what the hell was taking so long.

“Hey, do you need a hand back there?” he called out. He squinted in the half-light, dark compared to the full sun glare outside when he ducked through the doorway and into the tack room.

“Oh, shit, sorry, just give me a sec.”

He stopped. Sam stood in the middle of the small room, saddles and bridles covering every inch of wall space, and Mia pressed into one corner, her tears impossible to hide. “Hey,” Sam murmured, striding over to her. Hell, he hadn’t expected her to be crying. He’d thought she might need a hand carrying some gear out, but . . . he didn’t know what to do.

“I’m fine, please,” she said, holding one hand up to her face, the other stretched out in front of her as if trying to push him away before he was even close.

“You’re not okay,” he said, knowing how gruff he sounded but unable to help it. “Come here.”

She shook her head. “Please, I’m fine,” she managed, voice cracking.

“Your mom, huh?” he asked, knowing that there was no way in hell he’d managed to say anything to upset her this much. She was still grieving, he could see that from a mile off.

She nodded, dropping one hand, the other still covering her face. “Yeah,” she whispered. “It’s just I haven’t talked about her for a long time. She’s been gone twelve years so I shouldn’t be reacting like this.”

“Come here,” Sam said, not taking no for an answer this time as he opened his arms and pulled her in.

He held her, tight, letting her cry. She sobbed once, loudly, a noise that made his heart lurch for her, feeling her pain, before she went silent and relaxed in his arms. It had been almost a year since he’d held a woman like this; comforted a woman and held her and felt something for her. He stiffened. Only that woman had played him, ripped his heart out when he’d have done anything for her. Anything.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’d tell you it’ll get easier, but I doubt it will.”

He didn’t sugarcoat things, even this type of thing, but he did feel for her. She’d tried to talk about her mom all nonchalant to him, laughing about her beautiful stables, when in reality it had torn her in half and left her crying all on her own. She’d lost her mom and her best friend as well; no wonder she’d been prickly when he’d tried to muscle in and take over with the one thing she did have— her horses.

Mia pushed back and he wished she hadn’t. He’d liked the warmth of her against him, the tickle of her long hair catching in his stubble as he’d inhaled her shampoo or whatever it was on her that smelled so damn delicious.

“Sorry,” she murmured, her hands to his chest as she stepped back. “I don’t ever let anyone see me cry.”

He believed it. She didn’t strike him as the type to let anyone see her vulnerabilities.

Sam glanced down at her, at her hands against his chest, at the way she was looking up at him, her eyes wide. Her mouth parted, tear-stained cheeks making her look so vulnerable that it tugged at something inside of him he’d thought was long buried.

“You’ve got nothing to apologize for,” he muttered, slowly raising a hand and brushing his thumb gently across her cheeks to blur the tears away.

Mia stayed still, her palms still planted against him, head tilted. He looked at her mouth, fought the urge to rub his thumb across her soft pink lips. Instead he dropped his hand, skimming past her long blonde hair on the way past. Sam bent a little, eyes on her mouth, imagining what her lips would taste like. He wanted to kiss her so damn bad, wanted to push her up against the wall behind her and kiss the hell out of her. But he didn’t.

He’d sworn off women for a reason, and sexy or not, he wasn’t about to take advantage of his boss up against a wall. Even crying she was beautiful, but he wasn’t going there. He couldn’t go there.

Dammit!

Her eyes were dancing, her lips were parted, her hands were slowly dropping away from his chest. But instead of closing the distance between them, instead of hungrily tasting her lips against his, he took her hands, stepping back and squeezing them.

“You take all the time you need,” he said instead, hearing the husky note of his own voice. “I’ll be out here.”

He walked out, ducking back through the door and out into the bright sunlight again. Goddamn it! What the hell had he just done? He’d always prided himself on being able to keep his shit together, and he’d let himself get way too close to Mia.

Excerpt:

She raised the glass and hurriedly swallowed the last of the wine.

Taste like passion fruit and vodka.

“Whoa,” Dunk exhaled, the sensory memories almost overwhelming him, the scents and colors matching the woman in front of him. “Daisy.”

“Y-yeah?” she stammered.

He was aware of her two friends eyeballing him, suspiciously.

He clasped a hand carefully around her elbow and drew her away from her friends, away from the easels and the tables, until they were hidden from view by the Young Adult Bestsellers bookcase.

Her eyes were on the floor.

“Daisy Rhys,” he repeated dumbly.

Because, seriously, how could he have forgotten her? She was beautiful, always had been. He hadn’t known her very well before Jamie and Leda’s engagement, but they’d beenin the bridal party—well, her officially, him honorarily—together. She was sweet; she’d cried silently the whole ceremony at the courthouse that day, hours before they’d…

His sharp hips, caught by soft inner thighs, cradled and held tight. Her slim, strong arms wrapped around his neck, tangled up in his tie thrown over one shoulder. Her gigantic doe amber eyes glittering with passion as they’d made love.

“Dunk.”

“Yeah.”

“What?”

“What?”

She gave a low, exasperated sigh. “Why did you bring me over here?”

“You’re my sex Cinderella,” he blurted out.

He cringed at himself, then facepalmed and dragged his hand slowly down his own stupid face.

“What?” she yelped indignantly, crossing her arms.

“Sorry!” he apologized. “Shit. Sorry. This isn’t… I mean, I was looking for you, but I didn’t remember that it was you, which… rude.”

That incoherent crap, miraculously, made her crack a tiny smile. But she was still flustered and confused, and embarrassed. He didn’t mind flustered or confused, but embarrassed, no, that wouldn’t do.

Focus, you moron.

“Okay, sorry.”

“Dunk, just take a timeout for a second,” she suggested, and there was helpless laughter in her voice as she took pity on him.

He blew out a big breath and then met her eyes squarely. “I woke up after Jamie and Leda’s wedding and I thought… that I had had a dream. A great dream. Well, the best dream, really. But then… hickies. I saw hickies.”

“Oh, God,” she whispered, even more embarrassed now.

“No! They were awesome,” he reassured her as quickly as possible. “But. Okay. This next part, it’s not pretty, and I’m really sorry about it. But I didn’t remember it was you, okay.So I started looking. Or, Aden sent me on a… treasure hunt? Well, he and Chase held the guestlist hostage?”

She took a second to process that and then ventured, “Like Prince Charming trying to find Cinderella?”

“Exactly!” he exclaimed, relieved that she was getting it.

But then her face went a little pale and then a little pissed off. “So you’ve, what, been tracking down all the single women who were at the wedding and…” Her voice dropped to a furious whisper. “Having sex with them to see if they’re your Cinderella? Your sex Cinderella?”

His eyes widened so much he felt them go dry in terror.

“What the hell? No! What kind of guy do you think I am?”

“Um… the kind of guy who has sex with me at a wedding, forgets who he had sex with, and then gets sent on a treasure hunt by his so-called friends to find her…?”

“Fuck my life,” Dunk whispered, hanging his head.

Then he snapped his face up, fully expecting to get slapped.

But instead, Daisy burst into giggles so loud, he expected all the birds in the trees toburst into song right along with her, just like Cinderella.

“You owe me a steak dinner,” she declared once the giggles fizzled out.

“Pardon me?” he asked, at a total loss.

Her face settled into a stern expression—or, as stern an expression as someone as enchanting and beautiful as Daisy could make—and she raised one finger to poke him in the chest. “You owe me a steak dinner,” she said again. When he just shook his head, still completely confused, she explained, “Sex Cinderella, Duncan McCoy? You owe me an apology. And I’ll accept one in the form of a steak dinner, the most expensive kind of dinner.”

“You want to go to dinner with me.”

He couldn’t even imagine what the hell his face looked like right now.

“Yep,” she chirped.

“Well okay then,” he agreed. “Never let it be said I can’t apologize.”

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

Excerpt

“How is the Phoenix?” Argento asked.

Dakota sighed.  “I don’t know.  We left her with the Sorceress.” The tone in his voice had Argento lifting a pierced eyebrow.

“You do not trust this Sorceress?”

Dakota let out a breath.  “It’s not that.” He sighed again.  “I just—”

“You worry you will not see her again.” It wasn’t a question, and Dakota nodded.  He shouldn’t be surprised, as Argento seemed to be quite clairvoyant at times.

        “If she dies—”

“She is not going to die.  Think of all she has gone through already. Do you truly believe that the two of you are not fated for happiness?  Once all of this war is over?”

“I’d like to believe that.  But it seems like as soon as we get close again, something pulls us apart.  When we were teenagers, it was Mitch.  Then Gregory pulled her here and I thought she was dead for ten years.  After I ran into her in that alley, I honestly wanted to believe—even if it was just for a moment—that fate had given us another chance.”  He took another drink.  “Then she was taken by Vincent, and when we found her she had been so fucked up mentally that it took her time to get back to where we were.  Then we did and Brady was killed, which caused her to pull away again until I nearly died.  Then after all that, we are given this opportunity to be a family—however fucked up our lives had been up to that point—we were going to be parents of this beautiful baby together.” He took another drink and ran his hands through his hair.  “Well, I suppose you know how that got screwed up, and now she’s dying and in the hands of someone who has probably not seen another person in decades.”

        “Have faith, Dakota.”

        Dakota turned to him. “Faith?”

“You believe because we are beasts that we do not believe in faith?” Argento snorted and smiled.  “We have faith, Dakota.  We believe in God, and we believe that sometimes things are meant to be and there is nothing you can do to change them.  You and the Phoenix?  You are meant to be.  You have to believe it, otherwise what are you fighting for?”

Praise for The Sorceress:

“Oh my gosh this book was incredible. It’s book three of the series and it was just as great, if not better, than the first two. It was absolutely amazing. I loved it and all the characters. Jessica is a fantastic writer and she did a great job writing about Anastasia, Dakota, Elizabeth, Tony and all the other characters. The creativity she possesses to be able to imagine this storyline and the other worlds and their inhabitants, is truly genius! And that ending was a huge surprise! If you haven’t already you need to read this entire series! Definitely a 5 star read!” –Heather

“Ana and Dakota are back for the final book to this amazing trilogy. This book will have you turning the pages just to see what will happen next. It is filled with action and adventure as well as the perfect hero and heroine, who have a love that is stronger than anything thrown their way. A perfect ending.” –Melissa.

Book 3 did not disappoint! Ana and Dakota come back swinging in this book, it will suck you in! I enjoyed learning more about the world(s) and Ana’s magic. thank you for your your words and imagination Jessica!” -Heather B.

Excerpt:

Noah felt an emotional pull toward her, that she seemed to understand him so well, even when he wasn’t sure he understood himself.
But he shouldn’t—he really shouldn’t—be feeling that way.
He cleared his throat. “And I noticed your Man-Fast flew out the window.”
She gasped and straightened her spine, which unfortunately called attention to the curve of her breasts. “What are you talking about?”
Struggling not to gaze too fixedly on the slight outline of nipple he could see beneath the white fabric of her dress, he managed to say, “Your Man-Fast. With all the flirting you were doing, I figured you’d given up on it.”
“I was not flirting!”
He lifted his eyebrows.
“Don’t you give me that snide look,” she said, her lush lips turning down in a frown. “I was talking to some people I know, same as you.”
“There was definitely more than talking going on over here.” He had no idea why he was pursuing this. It was stupid. Futile. It would just make things worse.
But he’d been bristling for too long about all the guys falling over themselves around her, and it was going to come out one way or the other.
“What are you talking about?” she demanded. “I didn’t do anything but talk.”
“Right. You didn’t smile at them and show them all that skin and make them think they might be getting lucky later on.”
She gasped again. “I did nothing of the kind.”
“Okay.”
“I didn’t! I was talking. A girl can talk to guys without being accused of leading them on. I could say the same thing about you—every time you talk to and smile at women.”
“I haven’t been talking to women tonight.”
“You talked to a few.”
He tried to remember back to the people he’d chatted with and only remembered two young women. “They were married. I knew them from high school.”
“So? What’s your point? You can flirt with married women, you know.”
“Are you saying you think I’m the kind of guy who would do that?” His voice was now as angry as hers was.
She opened her mouth with some sort of sharp reply, but she must have rethought it. She slumped slightly. “No. I know you’re not.”
“Good.”
“It would be nice if you’d know I wasn’t like that either.”
“I’d never think you’d come on to married men.”
“You just think I’m some kind of tease, torturing men for fun.”
Noah sighed and leaned against the counter. “No. I really don’t.”
“Then why were you acting like that then?”
Good question.
And a question he couldn’t possibly answer honestly.
“I was just being an ass.”
“Yes. You were.”
“Sorry.”
Her frown was relaxing slightly, and she was peering at him closely. “Okay then.”
“Okay?”
“Yes. Okay.”
He felt a little better, now that she wasn’t so mad at him. But it just made him want to touch her even more.
He really needed to get out of here.
“I already have an older brother,” she said, still scrutinizing his face. “I don’t need another one.”
Damn it.
She thought he was acting like an older brother.
She had no idea he felt like a jealous boyfriend, resenting the fact that any other guy was thinking about what was his.
Could things be any more of a mess for him?
