About ABANDON:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken comes a new story in her Seaside Pictures series…

It’s not every day you’re slapped on stage by two different women you’ve been dating for the last year.

I know what you’re thinking. What sort of ballsy woman gets on stage and slaps a rockstar? Does nobody have self-control anymore? It may have been the talk of the Grammy’s.

Oh, yeah, forgot to mention that. I, Ty Cuban, was taken down by two psychotic women in front of the entire world. Lucky for us the audience thought it was part of the breakup song my band and I had just finished performing. I was thirty-three, hardly ready to settle down.

Except now it’s getting forced on me. Seaside, Oregon. My band mates were more than happy to settle down, dig their roots into the sand, and start popping out kids. Meanwhile I was still enjoying life.

Until now. Until my forced hiatus teaching freaking guitar lessons at the local studio for the next two months. Part of my punishment, do something for the community while I think deep thoughts about all my life choices.

Sixty days of hell.

It doesn’t help that the other volunteer is a past flame that literally looks at me as if I’ve sold my soul to the devil. She has the voice of an angel and looks to kill—I would know, because she looks ready to kill me every second of every day. I broke her heart when we were on tour together a decade ago.

I’m ready to put the past behind us. She’s ready to run me over with her car then stand on top of it and strum her guitar with glee.

Sixty days. I can do anything for sixty days. Including making the sexy Von Abigail fall for me all over again. This time for good.

Damn, maybe there’s something in the water.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

EXCERPT

Call it the science of breakups.

Nothing worked.

Not drugs.

Not alcohol.

Not music.

Not space.

Not even time. Because the memories were always there, and it was incredible how easy it was for your brain to conjure up smells, tastes, and feelings.

And since both Abigails and my career had erupted at the same time? Everything related to music was also tethered to her.

I put a pillow over my head and yelled into it.

She was desperate. But I felt like a weak piece of shit for letting her stay with me. I hated those guys: the ones that just wanted one morsel of the girl that got away and were willing to do anything, even exchange their dicks, for a pussy. Just so they could have one last look, taste, fill, call it whatever you wanted. I hated those guys.

They sucked.

The last thing I needed was to become that guy. Because I knew if she hurt me again, I would literally have nothing left.

And it was a terrifying thought, to say the least.

I put the pillow back behind my head and turned to my side, touching the wall with my fingertips like the biggest loser on the planet. I wondered how many inches separated the space between us. If I pressed my ear to the wall, would I hear her crying because of the storm? Or was she just dreaming about stabbing me in my sleep?

It was a toss-up. I mean, it always had been with us.

The thunder cracked again, scaring the shit out of me as I jumped out of bed and shut the guest bedroom window.

This was ridiculous.

At least I wouldnt have to see her at the music camp since Drew had gone to bat for me. I was headed to Trevors studio to help with his music students. He was so thankful that he could have more time with the kids and his new fiancée that I actually felt relief that I was finally helping and not making a mess of things.

It hadnt always been that way.

You knew there was something terrifyingly wrong when Drew, the f-up of the group, told you to put your big boy pants on.

Thunder cracked again.

Yeah, I was getting zero sleep tonight.

I grabbed my guitar on my way out to the living room, then snatched up one of my sharp number-two pencils from my satchel, along with my old, ratty, blue music notebook and sat on the couch. The front cover of the journal was almost completely torn off and had stickers from places Id visited covering it. No matter how many times I tried to buy a new one, I still kept this one and just stapled more pages into it. Maybe it was stupid, but it was a comfort to me.

The room was dark.

Silent.
Just the way I liked it.

I loved the power behind the drums, but there was something so intimate about playing the acousticjust me, my Gibson Les Paul, and my voice.

I strummed a few chords, switched to G, and kept strumming as my mind decided to torture me by way of memories.

So many damn memories.

First layer!
1. In one bowl, pour one dark, devilish billionaire and one smirking, ex-SEAL charmer.
2. Stir in one curvy, innocent blonde with student loans and a crazy idea of how to pay them off.
3. Mix all three until combined. Beat at medium speed until frothy.
4. Pour into a prepared marriage of convenience. Set the oven to “secret baby.”
5. When half-baked, remove from heat and poke holes in it.

Second layer!
6. Whip together a sexy single dad and a sassy waitress until smooth and creamy.
7. Add a pinch of little girl cuteness and a dash of creepy stalker.
8. Pour batter over first layer in pan. Don’t worry if the pan seems too small—the contents are supposed to be over the top.
9. Season liberally with spicy situations, salty language, and sweet moments.
10. Finish baking at a high heat until the happy ending buzzes.

Enjoy while hot and fresh but be careful not to burn your fingers and mouth.

Excerpt:

Now this was the craziest thing Id ever done.

No, the stupidest, I thought to myself as I walked through the lobby of the gleaming skyscraper.

I was here to meet with Dominic StoneMister Whole-Lotta-Zeros.

Wed emailed back and forth to discuss the terms of my deflowering. Hed encouraged me to do an Internet search on him, which provided me with a visual of my potential, uh, gardener”—a smoking hot one.

Dark hair, dark eyes, dark look.

There were pictures of him at charity events, in business magazine profiles, and the odd paparazzi shot of him coming out of the gym. Dominic Stone looked good in gym clothes. And suits. And tuxedos.

There werent a lot of pictures of him with dates, though. Maybe he was gay? I thought that might have been the case when I saw another ridiculously attractive specimen beside him in a lot of the pictures, but that turned out to be his brother Jacob.

I didnt get it. Neither of these men needed to buy a virgin online. They were, quite literally, panty-droppers. If their square jaws and bedroom eyes didnt do it for the ladies, then their suggestive grins certainly would.

It did for me, anyhow.

Id spent a long time looking at the pictures. Even in thumbnail size, Dominic Stones power and magnetism practically radiated off the screen. Would he be the one? The idea made my body heat up and my nipples tighten. My breath shortened and a curling, pulsing sensation built low in my belly.

Okay, I wished he had sent a dick pic.

After a lot of back and forth, Id agreed to meet him at his office. It was actually his building, I realized as I saw the signs in the lobby.

Dominic and Jacob Stone ran one of the biggest retail conglomerates in the country. It owned a boutique department store, a chain of high-end media stores, a ubiquitous box store, and god only knew what else. The zeros hed offered in his email were totally legit.

I once promised myself that Id never work in retail. That could change.

As instructed, I told the man at the security desk that I was there to see Mister Stone.

He didnt even take his eyes off his magazine. You can go up to the twelfth floor, maam. Theyll help you there.

He said hed come down to meet me. Maam? Really? I was twenty-two, not twice that!

Mister StoneDominichad insisted we meet first in the lobby, as a kind of show of good faith and safety. Meeting in a public place, hed written, was a good idea for all parties concerned in this potential transaction. With dozens of people floating in and out of the elevators of the thirty-story building, it couldnt be much more public.

With a sigh, the guard reached for the phone. Have a seat. He gestured towards a leather bench.

No, thank you. I needed to move.

My nerves were getting the better of me, my hands shaky and cold despite the summer heat. If I stood, my sleeveless red sheath dress wouldnt wrinkle.

When I got up that morning, I had to decide what one wore to an interview as a what? Mistress? Nothat sounded too committed. Hymen vendor? Ugh. In the end, I decided to dress as though going to work, which was kind of true.

My heels clicked on the polished stone floor as I walked over to an abstract metal sculpture on display. It stretched nearly twenty feet in the air, shining in the morning sun bending through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

What do you think? a man asked from behind me.

Its beautiful. I held up my hands. I promise, I wont go any closer.

Hmm. His voice was nearer. What was the first word that came to mind when you walked in?

I frowned at the odd question. It looks delicate. Like it could fall over any minute, like metal pick-up sticks stacked dangerously high.

Theres over a thousand wire coat hangers there.

Huh. So there were.

You are Evie, correct?

Swallowing hard, I turned to the voice. And looked up.

Dominic Stone stood before me, his tall, dark and handsome figure like a shadow in the sunlit lobby.

He was even hotter in person.

Even if his charcoal suit came from a discount storewhich it clearly didnthis attitude would be enough to command my attention. All those fanciful words, like charismatic, magnetic, and imposing, were all very appropriate when describing Dominic Stone.

My three-inch heels barely took me to his shoulders, and I wobbled a little as his gaze ran over me. Just when I was about to turn my ankle, his hand shot out. The feel of his muscular forearm under my fingers had the exact opposite effect of steadying me.

Thanks. My face burned, but I forced myself to look him in the eye.

They were rich, dark brown, as heady as strong coffee and gave me a similar jolt. When he tilted his head and his lips curved at the edges, I couldnt tell if I amused him or he was just being polite.

A furrow appeared between his dark eyebrows. You are Evie, right?

Yes! I squeezed his arm, as though I subconsciously expected him to run away.

Instead of shrugging me off, he used his other hand to tug my fingers down his wrist to end in a warm, tingling handshake. Both his hands were around mine, and he didnt let go.

I didnt mind.

Its a pleasure to meet you, he said smoothly. Shall we?

Shall we what? I blinked at him.

Go up to my office? He nodded toward the elevator bank. Unless youd feel better staying here? Or we could go get a coffee or something.

I stared at him, the absurdity of this situation dawning on me. And then my big smart mouth got ahead of my brain.

Coffee? Does my virginity come with an espresso and a muffin?

His laugh sounded like a sharp bark, echoing off the stone floor. My face probably matched the crimson of my dress as I looked down. With his hands still wrapped around mine, he pulled me closer. I shivered as his warm breath caressed my bare shoulders.

No, Evie, Ill pay extra for the coffee. But I like it sweet and milky, not dark and bitter.

Excerpt:

“You ready?” I gripped my drumsticks tightly in my right hand as the screaming from the crowd pierced my ears, causing an onslaught of adrenaline to pulse beneath my skin.

Drew, one of the leading frontmen for our band, Adrenaline, rolled his eyes and shot me a middle finger. Then he straight-up tugged his leather pants down below his hips to show off his legendary V.

We get it, bro, you’ve got an eight-pack where there’s usually only six.

With a flourish, I pulled off my simple white tee and shrugged. “What? Two can play that game.”

“Seriously, guys?” Will gave me a shove. “They already gave us shit last time about you two comparing dicks. It’s the Grammys, not the Super Bowl. We have to be clothed.”

I eyed him up and down. “Question. Was it your plan to go out there looking like the dad of the group, or was it just a happy accident?” He was in skinny jeans and a simple vintage tee and wore his typical thick black glasses that somehow still got him action from his wife, actress Angelica Greene. It was confusing when Will got action and I didn’t.

Not that I wasn’t getting any.

I inwardly smirked. I was dating one of our background dancers, while at the same time hooking up with one of Zane’s—both of which were performing with us tonight. Hey, it wasn’t like I planned for them to ever meet! And before you get your panties in a twist and start calling me a whore while chanting things like “I pray your dick falls off,” let me explain.

I have a solid reason for dating both women.

You ready for it?

The truth bomb of the century?

I don’t actually have a heart. You see, a long time ago in a land where my innocence thrived—you know, before the mistakes with the drugs, alcohol, and the time I carried a live chicken on stage and kissed it—I was in love.

Real love.

Not the kind where you say it just because you want to have sex with someone so badly, you’re willing to sell your soul to the devil. Twice.

Real, honest to God love.

Her name? Abigail.

Her current status? Breaker of souls and spawn of Satan.

Justified Excerpt:

This is a terrible idea. I cant stay here. I wished there was more force behind my voice, more sound, but all I could get out was a squeak of protest.

Between arguing with David, answering a million questions about the shooting, and even more from the hospital staff to determine whether my head had been damaged further, what little voice I had was shot. It had been a long, arduous morning. The shock from being shot at was still buzzing underneath my skin, but it was now secondary to the utter disbelief that the place Case believed I would be safest was under his roof.

When he told me he was placing me in protective police custody and taking me to a safe house, never in a million years would I have guessed he meant his house. I was wondering if maybe he was the one who hurt his head when he took me to the ground.

What about Hayes? Someone shot at me today. You took a bullet for me this morning. You cant put your son in the line of fire. I wont allow it. All of the things I wanted to do to emphasize my point, I couldnt. There was no crossing my arms over my chest thanks to my jacked-up elbow. There was no stomping my foot in aggravation thanks to the soft splint holding my ankle in one position. There would be no yelling, since my voice could barely be heard, so all I was left with was a glare. Unfortunately, Case ignored my dirty look and continued to usher me inside the house.

His morning had been even longer than mine, and he looked as haggard as I felt. After making sure I was secured inside the hospital with an armed guard, hed had to deal with the crime scene and the slew of reporters who showed up on the scene. Since a shooting in a high traffic and very public place like the hospital was bound to make national news, Case mentioned it was more than likely the Texas Rangers were going to get called in to help investigate. He didnt sound thrilled at the prospect, he also didnt seem too concerned by the fact he was shot. He still had a red stain and a hole in his tan uniform shirt from where the bullet, which was meant for me, skimmed his shoulder. The wound required ten stitches and now was dressed in a stark white bandage much like the one wrapped around my injured hand.

 We were quite a pair.

Excerpt:

Ryder Hammond stared into the eyes of his best friend, who appeared ready to murder him. Next to Sebastian were his two brothers, looking equally furious, and Ryder knew he was in deep shit.

Had he really just objected at Sierra’s wedding?

He began to sweat beneath his suit. But he’d done it, the words had spilled forth, and now he had to dissect why. Ignoring the swearing men beside him, Ryder thought about the moment the big wooden double doors had opened and he’d seen Sierra in her wedding gown.

Her long light brown hair tumbled over her shoulders in perfect curls, her curves showing in her fitted dress, her cleavage just appropriately peeking out from the dipped neckline. Her gorgeous face had glowed as she walked down the aisle to another man.

He’d come today because, as a close family friend, he’d been invited. Because he thought he’d made his peace with the way things had ended between them. And for closure. Once she was married, she’d be lost to him forever. And that was the thought that had run through his head at the moment the priest asked if anyone objected.

He hadn’t planned to open his mouth.

He hadn’t meant to ruin her wedding.

He had intended to watch her be given away to another man and, dammit, be okay with it.

But he wasn’t.

So here they were.

He glanced at her brothers, Sebastian, his closest friend, and Parker, because Ethan had gone after his sister. “I have to talk to her.”

“No f*cking way,” Sebastian said, one palm on his chest, blocking him from moving forward.

“If I knew you’d planned this sh*t, I never would have let you in the door,” said Parker.

Ryder held up both hands. “It wasn’t planned. The words just came out of my mouth. But now that I said them, I need to speak with your sister.” He shoved past the brothers and headed directly for Sierra, who stood talking to the man she was supposed to marry.

His gaze locked with hers but Jason wasn’t having it.

“It’s him.” He pointed, shoving his finger into Ryder’s chest. “It’s always been f*cking him. At every family function, always around.” Jason turned to Sierra. “You wanted him to interrupt the wedding.” He was clearly furious.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

One of my favourite genres is second chance romance and Take the Bride hit the spot for me….

Carly Phillips gave us a hot and engaging tale which I really enjoyed.

An objection to a wedding is not something that’s heard at many ceremonies but when Ryder surprised himself by standing up and doing just that during Sierra’s wedding – the one he pushed away – I just knew that it was gonna be a fun read.

Sierra thought she was over Ryder but after he stopped her wedding and the events that followed, she realized that she might have been kidding herself about how she felt for him.

I loved this pair together. Ryder had his own reasons for his actions in the past and while I understood why he did what he did, I was still a bit peeved at him for hurting Sierra.

A quick read in the 1001 Dark Nights series, this is a solid 4* read for me and one I’d definitely recommend.

Read an excerpt from A GIRL LIKE YOU

She was so bad at figuring men out, she thought miserably.

“I want to say no, but…” She yawned again. “Sorry.”

“It’s okay, Shelby.” Standing up, Sam reached down for her hand and gently pulled her to her feet. “Can I see you tomorrow?”

Frowning, she looked up at him. “You mean to hang out again?”

His dark eyes blinked at her several times as if not understanding her question. “Um…I was hoping to take you out properly – dinner and whatever else it is you might like to do. Other than sailing, you never really answered my question that night.”

Taking a step back, now it was Shelby who didn’t seem to get it. “Why do you want to take me to dinner? We…we hung out tonight and…there’s no hard feelings. I mean, I’m still sorry for not being honest with you the night we met, but…don’t feel like you need to keep hanging out with me.”

The fierce look from earlier was back as he took a step toward her. “Are we back to that again? Why exactly do you think I’m here, Shelby?” he asked, frustration practically bristling off of him.

“I…like I said…I figured we were just hanging out to…you know…talk things out. And we have.” Hopefully he couldn’t see her slight tremble. She wasn’t used to someone questioning her like this.

But then again, she wasn’t used to dealing with anyone quite like Sam.

He took another step toward her. “Is that why you agreed to let me come over? Because you needed to clear your conscience? Or thought that I needed to?”

“Um…I don’t know. Maybe.”

Another step toward her. “You want to know why I’m here?” He didn’t wait for her to respond. “I’m here because for two damn weeks you’ve been all I can think about. Seeing you earlier in the library parking lot had me feeling like I won the damn lottery – like I was getting a second chance with you!” Another step and now he towered over her. “But more than anything, I’m here because you’re someone I want to know better, dammit!”

“Sam, I…”

“But if that’s not what you want – if I’m not someone you want to know – then say something right now, Shelby,” he demanded. “Right now, before my feelings grow even deeper. Because believe it or not, what I felt for you that night at the bar is nothing compared to how I feel right now.”

She gasped softly and her foolish heart began its wild dance again. Swallowing hard, she looked up at him – saw the sincerity and the anguish in those dark depths. “I…” She paused and collected her thoughts which were going a million miles a minute in her head. “How do you feel?”

It was something she needed to know. It was one thing if he was casually interested in her – which was what she expected him to say. But what if it were more? What if it were something deep and warm and wonderful and scary and everything she was feeling too?

Reaching out, Sam cupped her face in his hands and rested his forehead against hers. “I feel like you’re someone I need to know.”

His voice was low and gruff and rumbly enough that she felt it all the way down to her toes.

How could she possibly explain to him that she was too afraid to believe him? That she didn’t have the confidence in herself to believe him?

As if sensing her thoughts, he quietly said, “You’ve been brutally honest with me all night, Shelby. Don’t stop now. Tell me what you’re thinking.”

There really was something about Sam that made her feel like she could say anything – even if she shouldn’t.

“I guess I’m afraid to believe that you really want to get to know me,” she admitted softly. “I’m nothing special, Sam. I’m not the type of girl you usually…”

He placed one finger across her lips to stop her flow of words. “Please don’t keep throwing that back in my face.” He closed his eyes as if in pain. “I know I’ve done a lot of stupid things and I’ve made a lot of bad choices, but that has nothing to do with you and me. When I saw you that night, all I remember thinking was…finally, there she is.”

Her eyes went wide at the intensity of his words. No one had ever said anything like that to her before. She wasn’t the kind of girl or woman who caused that kind of reaction – she knew that and she was okay with it. But after seeing the look on Sam’s face as he spoke, Shelby knew she had to have more – needed to see where this went and what would come from an admission like his.

“Wow,” she whispered, because it’s all she could force herself to say.

The smile Sam gave her was one of sweet relief. Unable to help herself, she placed her hand on his chest, and, feeling his rapid heartbeat, she grew bold. Her hand smoothed up and over his shoulder and then raked up into his hair. Up on her tiptoes, she pressed her lips to his and prayed she wouldn’t panic or freak out again.

When his arms slowly banded around her waist, Shelby knew this time was different. He was being cautious and careful and, undoubtedly, holding back so he didn’t spook her. The kiss was chaste – slow and sweet. Only this time, she was the one to seek more. Her tongue tentatively reached out and skimmed along his bottom lip and she heard his sharp intake of breath. It made her bold. Pressing herself more firmly against him, she reveled in the feel of his warm, hard body. And when he maneuvered them back over the sofa, she felt her excitement grow.

Sam sat and gently guided Shelby down so he could cradle her in his lap and, if anything, she thought it was the perfect position for them. His arms were around her, holding her securely to him, all the while their kiss just continued. There wasn’t the same intensity as there was the night they met, and that was more than okay with her. She was enjoying this – the way they were slowly getting acquainted with each another.

Squirming slightly against him, she gulped for air when Sam broke the kiss and gazed at her face. His breath was coming just as raggedly as hers and she wished more than anything that she didn’t need oxygen quite so much because she already missed the feel of his mouth on hers.

One of his hands came up and took the clip out of her hair. She let out a small moan of pleasure because it had been bothering her all night, but when that same hand anchored up into her hair and began massaging her scalp, it felt like she had died and gone to heaven.

Good lord, if a three-second scalp massage feels this good, what would sex with him be like?

Hopefully she’d find out.

Diving in for another kiss, Shelby was pleasantly surprised that Sam seemed just as anxious as she was for another taste. She twisted and turned in his lap until she was straddling him and it was like she didn’t even recognize herself. She wasn’t normally this forward or – dare she say, aggressive? – but there was no way for her to fight what she was feeling. For two weeks she had kicked herself every day for running like she did and now that she was getting a second chance, she was taking it.

With everything she had, apparently.

They kissed, they rolled over and stretched out on the sofa until Sam was on top of her and Shelby wrapped herself completely around him. So many times she thought to break their kiss and simply ask him to stay – to move things into the bedroom – but his hands and mouth kept distracting her until she didn’t know her own name, let alone where they were half the time.

At some point – it could have been minutes later, it could have been hours – Sam raised his head and smiled down at her. He was so handsome, so sexy, so…everything she ever fantasized about…and he was here with her.

“Shelby,” he said, low and thick. “Damn.”

Yeah. She knew exactly what he meant.

Her hand smoothed up his back and up into his hair in hopes of guiding his mouth back to hers, but…he moved.

He stood.

She stayed where she was on the sofa and looked up at him in confusion.

“I should go,” he said after a long moment.

“Go?”

He nodded. “Dinner tomorrow night, right?”

He was leaving? Now? Seriously?

“Um…”

Doing a move that was clearly becoming his thing, Sam reached for her hand and gently pulled her to her feet. He kissed her one last time on the lips before letting out a low growl. Clearing his throat, he said, “You know how badly I want to stay, right?”

Shelby nodded and wanted to say she felt the same, but she couldn’t seem to make her voice work.

He hugged her tight. “But I don’t think it’s the right thing to do,” he said, and her only consolation was that he sounded as miserable about it as she felt. “Let me take you out tomorrow.” He pulled back and studied her face. “I want to do this right. I feel like I came on too strong that night and…and I’m not willing to do anything that you might regret.”

Well, damn. He was sweet, sexy, funny, and considerate? How was she supposed to resist?

“That night…that was my own issue, Sam. It wasn’t about you. Not really. I want you to know that.”

With a lopsided grin, he pulled her back into his embrace. “Thank you for saying that.”

“It’s the truth.”

Slowly they broke apart and walked over to the front door. He opened it and kissed her one more time. “You are pure temptation. You know that, right?”

Blushing, she shook her head.

“It’s true.” Tucking a finger under her chin, his expression turned serious. “Thank you for inviting me over and for giving me another chance. I’ll pick you up tomorrow at seven. Will that work?” He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone so they could exchange numbers. Once that was done, he kissed her one last time and walked out the door.

And Shelby swore part of her heart went with him.
