He leaned down, so that his nose was all but touching hers. “Sweetheart, you couldn’t handle what I’m really made of.”
Stupid Del wanted to drag his stubborn mouth closer for the kiss she could all but taste. From the look in his eyes, he wanted the same. Mike might not like her much, but the man wanted her. She could feel the chemistry between them, and it burned.
Self-preservation reared its head, and she ducked under him and hustled to the door leading to the hall. She opened it and waited. “Don’t let it hit you in the ass, Mike.”
He chuckled as he sauntered to join her. “You’ll watch what you say around Colin?”
“Yep. When I see him Wednesday night, I promise to call you a buttwipe instead of an asshole. Fair?”
He sighed. “Guess it’ll have to do. For now.” To her shock, he dragged a rough finger down her exposed neck. “Nice hair, by the way. I like the braids pulled back. Shows off your pretty neck. No tats here, sweetness?”
She didn’t know what to say, frozen by the combustible lust and confusion drowning her system.
He stared into her eyes again, gave a satisfied smile, then left.
She watched his fine ass leave the building, heard a few choice remarks from the guys in the garage who also watched him leave, and yelled at them to get back to work. Then she slammed into her office and plopped her butt in her chair, staring without seeing at the mess on her desk.
She rubbed her neck over the spot he’d touched and tried to be madder about what he’d done. What he’d called her.

This series has been really good and I’ve enjoyed all 3 books so far, however, I must admit I have been awaiting this one as the glimpses we have had of Mike and Del together intrigued me. I was not disappointed, this is my favourite of the 4 book series, in my opinion the best was definitely saved for last.
Mike and Del’s story is by far the hottest of the 4 books and oh so good, who knew Mr Single & Responsible had such urges?!?! The chemistry between these two when it does explode is so well done that it’s seamless, the physical and emotional so well intertwined with Marie Harte trademark humour and banter that you almost miss, through the sheer panty melting hot scenes (with a touch of kink!), the friendship and emotional attachment that is developing between them.
Mike and Del both have baggage that means neither is really looking for a relationship, one believes having had his ‘one’ there cannot be another and the other believes herself unworthy but when Colin decides to enrol the help of the family to get himself a new Mom and a new puppy you just know fun and games are going to follow! The McCauley charm honed by Ubie is irresistible and Colin is just adorable. The whole family show up as usual throughout the book and it’s like curling up with your favourite hot drink and some rich dark chocolate – decadent with a touch of naughty, totally irresistible and very satisfying!
The overwhelming factor for me that makes these such an enjoyable read is the amazing banter between all the characters, primary and secondary. The affection, humour and love shines through, the teasing, flirting, arguing, dirty sexy talk and insults flung around through these books make them a pleasure to experience. Like every family they will frustrate and exasperate you – you will be rooting for them while screaming at them!
In a world full of angsty contemporary romance where you sometimes want a palate cleanse these are a joy, they remind me of the reasons I love Jennifer Crusie, Rachel Gibson, Susan Anderson just to name a few. Authors I read in paperback but with the advance of the eReader, and therefore the popularity of indie writers, have not touched in a while. Marie Harte writes a steamy, sexy, damn fine romance but throw in her gift for the humour and banter and they are a winner for an easy read that will leave you with a smile, a warm heart and tingles in places!
I commented previously that another factor was they are “real” – no billionaires, no rock gods, no MC bikers – just normal, real men with strong family values who want a good woman and a good life. Simple things that in reality we all want and, while I read contemporary romantic fiction and don’t mind the plausibility being stretched a tad, it’s a pleasant change of pace to read ‘real’ that could be any family, anywhere with its ups & downs, tragedies and celebrations. Just trying to get by day to day, working hard and playing hard.
It’s an engaging series, well written with a fabulous quota of panty melting scenes all wrapped up in humour. My personal favourite is this one, Mike is just big, rugged, and a total panty dropper package, Del is a mix of sass and sarcasm, vulnerability and a huge heart, a perfect foil for Mike. Marie Harte has excelled herself with this series, her best contemporary romances to date by far….

For Kara, I would cast Nikki Reed. She comes across as both a subtle exotic beauty from her mixed ethnic heritage, with a touch of the girl next door. For me, she fit Kara perfectly except I imaged Kara a good bit curvier. That aside, she’s a fabulous representation of my good little Navy SEAL wife turned stripper!

I read Secret Maneuvers some time ago but reread it this week before Stripping Her Defenses, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it – fast paced, well executed, damn fine secondary characters as always and leaving you wanting more.
Some mistakes from the past haunt us forever… unless fate steps in with a second chance.
One ‘Dear John’ letter haunted Bobby Baker’s every living moment. It was the letter he’d stupidly written to his high school sweetheart, Belle, right after he had left to join the Army. The letter in which he’d told her that he wasn’t so sure they were ready for forever yet. Before he could let her know that the letter, and his second thoughts, were nothing more than a mistake, she disappeared from the small Georgia town they had both been raised in.
Fifteen years after the letter, Belle unknowingly walked back into Bobby’s life when her job as an ATF Agent forced her to work with a group of men secretly headed by the CIA to help her track down whoever was involved in funnelling black market weapons to a drug cartel in Mexico.
Bobby planned to use this mission to try to soothe Belle’s hurt feelings while proving to her that their love was meant to be forever. He would use every dirty trick he’d learned since he had joined the Army to maneuver her back into his life for the long haul. Belle was not making it easy, though, as she continued to keep him at arm’s length in the hopes that mistakes of her own would never come to light.
Not gonna lie, there were times I wanted to take a baseball bat to Bobby and inflict some serious damage! But this a story of second chances (more than two in Bobby’s case!), first loves and what ifs all interwoven into a military action story.
“Ever since I met you, even my feet stopped belonging to me and became yours because all they ever seem to want to do is travel to wherever you are. My heart only lives and beats when you’re where I can see you. Touch you. Kiss your lips and show you the physical equivalent of how deeply I love you. My soul fucking died after I sent that stupid letter and you disappeared. I’ve spent the last fifteen years walking around as a shell. Not a living, breathing human, but a robot going through the everyday motions. You were, are, and will always be more than my life. More than my beating heart, or any other physical reaction my body has. You’re my everything, my fucking essence. I cease to exist unless I’m with you.”
I really felt for Belle and Bobby through their reconnection because life is messy and complicated, sometimes the decisions we make while right at that particular time have far reaching consequences that you cannot anticipate or foresee. Belle at first comes across as an incredibly strong woman and it’s not until Teagan and Seth have their say with Bobby that we realise life has hurt her more than she shows.
Bobby’s reaction to the news of what he has missed and some of his subsequent behaviour is where my friend Slugger and I wanted to get to know him! But Jessie Lane then writes pieces like that above and you want to forgive him, you want him to give Belle that happy ever after and for them to have the family life together they should always have had. Bobby frustrated me for a fair amount of the book, however, I still enjoyed it and even on the reread didn’t skim any.
The secondary characters were as outstanding as always, special mention has to go to Declan just because it’s Declan! Jaxon and his observations on relationships and military tactics were very funny, subtle and almost scary!

Riley for me was not a character who had stood out in my mind on the previous book so I was taken by surprise at exactly how much I liked him. Nah I’ll correct that, how much I wanted to do dirty, dirty things with him because I liked him that much! He sort of sneaked up on me and it all became clear why he was so withdrawn in the previous book. Some serious regrets there that he would change in a heartbeat.
Kara I was pretty unsympathetic to in the beginning – however the way depression is explained and dealt with really opens your eyes – it’s a tricky, largely misunderstood problem that they beautifully, clearly explained and my heart went out to her and to Riley as this affects not just the one going through it but all their loved ones as well.
This story is second chances the same as the first but with a completely different feel to it. Kara has spent years finding and accepting herself, she’s in a good place; body, mind and soul all at peace. A chance run in with Riley shows both of them that there is still unfinished business between them as well as love and a very healthy chemistry. That chemistry when it explodes in the backseat of her car…….. Well, panty melt. Who knew Riley was like this?!?!?!
This book is also the introduction of The Regulators MC which is a series Jessie Lane and Chelsea Camaron are writing together. Being the unfaithful book whore that I am, and hey you’ll see what I mean when you read it, I wanted to do REALLY DIRTY things with Ice (yep Riley was forgotten that fast!) and as I adore MC books this just made it all even better, bikers, military men, hotness, sex, a damn sweet story and oh, did I mention bikers and sex?

On the whole I devoured this one and thoroughly enjoyed it, there is a lot going on but I thought it was a good introduction to the new series, adored Riley and Kara, want to console Ice and have to say that at one point Jessie Lane stopped my heart. I sat there looking at my kindle thinking NO, she wouldn’t? Would she?
Another solid book from these two talented writers who just get better and better………………………

As the blackness starts to fade away, I see that white light, but it doesn’t really look like that tunnel. No, it’s just a scene change, and if I could muster up enough strength, I’d groan because there are things in my life I’d rather not relive. It’s bad enough that I have the memories and have been dealing with the fallout for far too long. Reliving it all over again is more agonizing than the first time around, because now, I know the truth. I betrayed my brother in the worst possible way when he’d done nothing wrong, but by the time I found out, it was far too late.
So why am I having these flashbacks playing in slow motion? I thought when you were on death’s door, your life was supposed to flash before your eyes. THESE ARE THE WORDS ARI WRITES TO BRANSON AFTER THEIR FIRST MEETING, NEVER EXPECTING TO SEE HIM AGAIN. HIS MEMORIES OF THAT DRUNKEN NIGHT ARE INCOMPLETE BUT THE WORDS RESONATED WITH HIM AND SO HE STARTED TO CHANGE THE DIRECTION HIS LIFE WAS SPIRALING TOWARDS.
AN ACCIDENT PLACES THEM TOGETHER AGAIN.
MY BRAIN IS SCREAMING AT ME TO RUN AWAY, TO FIND SAFETY, BUT THEN I LOOK BACK INTO THE CAR. HER HAND PRESSES AGAINST THE GLASS, HER FINGERS SPREADING, AND SHE LOOKS AT ME, TEARS FILLING HER EYES. I PRESS MY HAND TO THE WINDOW, COVERING HERS, AND IN THAT INSTANT, THE WORLD AROUND US STOPS. WHAT STUCK ME MOST ABOUT HOW THIS RELATIONSHIP HAS BEEN WRITTEN IS THAT MISTAKES ARE MADE ON BOTH SIDES BUT THE APOLOGIES AND THE WILLINGNESS TO WORK AND FIGHT FOR IT SHINES THROUGH FROM BRANSON AND ARI, I GET SO BORED READING WHERE ONE IS DOING ALL THE COMPROMISING AND WORK – RELATIONSHIPS TAKE TWO, THEY TAKE EFFORT, COMPROMISE, HUMOUR, PASSION AND FRIENDSHIP – THIS IS SHOWN BEAUTIFULLY IN CONFLAGRATION IN MY OPINION.
ARI IS A WOMAN DISCOVERING HER STRENGH, ACKNOWLEDGING HER WORTH AND HER JOURNEY, BOTH TOGETHER WITH BRANSON AND ALONE, TO DISCOVER HERSELF IS JUST BEAUTIFULLY DONE.
I DETEST REVIEWS THAT TELL ME THE WHOLE BOOK SO I’M NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT THE STORY DEVELOPMENT, THE DISCOVERY IS THE PLEASURE, BUT WHAT I WILL SAY IS THAT THIS IS THE SWEETEST, PUREST, CLASSIEST CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE IT’S BEEN MY PLEASURE TO READ FOR A WHILE. TOTALLY UNEXPECTED IN THAT IT JUST GRABBED THOSE HEARTSTRINGS AND DID NOT LET GO.
