Title: I Can’t Even Series: Carter Brothers #2 Author: Lani Lynn Vale
Release Date: June 4, 2024
Genre: Romantic Suspense Trope: Bad Girl/Good Guy
BLURB
Ellodie Cassandra Solaire made a single, solitary New Year’s resolution.
That resolution was set in stone, and she wouldn’t be breaking it, no matter what.
It was simple: Say yes to every person who asks her out on a date until she finds a boyfriend.
Easy, right?
Wrong.
She breaks that New Year’s resolution three months into the year after a guy gives her serial killer vibes.
Fast forward three months, and she’s unhappily saying yes to any man who asks.
Until one day, there she is, eating a chicken burrito waiting for traffic to clear, and he appears like a knight in shining armor.
One second, she’s counting down the seconds until the parade dissipates so she can go home, and the next, a car is flying through the air directly beside her, courtesy of a hot cop performing a PIT maneuver.
It’s during the middle of the arrest when Quaid Carter’s eyes find hers.
From that moment on, she’s lost to anyone else but him.
The only problem is that serial killer vibe she got off of her potential date a few months ago isn’t just a vibe. It’s a full-blown obsession. And the serial killer decides that she won’t be the one to get away.
Ellodie and Quaid were just meant to be….. but their road to getting to a happy future was not an easy one!!!!
Quaid is a policeman who is trying to catch a suspect when he first encounters Ellodie. He runs into her again at the end of a disastrous date she’s had and the third time he’s at the hospital where she’s a nurse to investigate some thefts. Each time there’s a spark, an interest and a definite connection. These Carter men know what and who they want and I’m enjoying watching them try to catch the women they fall for.
Ellodie made a New Year’s resolution to go on dates to see if she could find Mr Right, she signed up to a dating app but it appeared that along with catching a few Mr Definitely-Not-Rights she might have also caught the interest of Mr Stalker-possibly Serial Killer and now she’s on Quaid’s radar for more than his attraction to her,
Although there’s a lot of heat and humour in the series this book, especially towards the end, was a hard read at times. There was a lot of bad stuff that happened and while I thought I knew who the monster was, LLV did well to make me second guess myself a time or two.
I’m enjoying this series. The Carter siblings/family are entertaining, are all up in each others business but they’re a tight group who have each others backs (and that of their significant others) when things get tough.
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Sneaking around with my best friend’s father wasn’t a part of my plans. We tried to resist, but we can’t help ourselves. Did I mention, he’s also my boss?
To keep suspicion from us, I decide to see other guys—specifically the new goalie for the Opal Springs Ghouls, and their defenseman, who I’ve had a crush on for ages. They love burning up the ice and my heart.
When all three of them get together, they hatch a plan to make me theirs forever. The problem? It might destroy us instead.

What do you get when a sweet-as-puck hockey-playing wolf shifter with a secret is reunited with his sister’s best friend whom he’s loved since childhood who has a secret of her own? The swoons.
Declan
All my life, I’ve done what is expected of me and been the perfect son and brother. But I’m tired of living by the rules others have for me and am ready to go after my own dreams. The first step is being the best left winger I can be on the Atlantic City Devil Birds hockey team and earning enough money to buy my dream farm. The second step is declaring my feelings and convincing my younger sister’s best friend to give me a chance to prove I’m someone she can love. She’s off working in New Zealand, so I have time to work on the first step before having to be brave enough to take the second. Until…
Miranda
I’m tired of being alone and feeling like I don’t belong anywhere. My parents are dedicated to their careers, and I rarely stay anywhere long enough to form genuine connections. I want to put down roots, be near the few friends I’ve made over the years and be part of a community. I’ve had a hopeless crush on my childhood best friend’s older brother, Declan, for years, but he’s only ever seen me as a friend. It’s time to consider looking for someone who will love me in return. When a sudden chance to work for a professional hockey team in New Jersey comes up, I jump at it without a second thought. Little did I know Declan was one of the stars until I walked into the rink. How will I be able to find someone when the only man I’ve ever wanted is front and center and focused solely on me?
Fate has a way of bringing people together. Secrets have a way of tearing them apart. Which will prevail?
Secret Pucking Unicorn is a shifter hockey romance full of humor, heart, and heat. If you want to laugh, sigh, and swoon, not necessarily in that order, with funny, sexy shifters, this is the book for you!
I’m first and foremost a PNR lover, though with the amount small town sports romances I’ve been devouring lately you’d maybe be hard pressed to realize that!!!! With Secret Pucking Unicorn, Jenny Fenshaw reminded me why I love the paranormal genre and shifters in particular! 🦄 🐺 🪄
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in The Paranormal Hockey League series and I adored Mac/Declan when he was supporting and trying to help Burke with his love life woes. Little did I realize that our MMC would have so much more on his own plate to deal with!!!!
I loved the fact that there was more to Declan’s shifter traits than normal and the gods, how sweet was he that he knew for so long that Miranda was his mate and he gave her time and distance to get to where she needed time before he declared his feelings! He was definitely all hot cinnamon roll hero!
My heart hurt for Miranda. She just got settled into a new life that she was enjoying when it all just imploded! Her parents, especially her mother, OMFG…. how could one woman be so cold towards her only child?!?! I hated the truths that came out but I loved the support Miranda realized she had and how that made her feel. I have to admit that at one point I was yelling at her to think, pay attention and work out what was happening….. even when I was pretty sure I knew what was going on and that she couldn’t get it all straight in her head. I know that doesn’t make a lot of sense right now, but once you read the book it will be crystal and make all the sense!!!!! 😉😁
Mac’s sister….. oh how I wanted to smack her upside the head… she’s like a tornado and while she annoyed me a tad in SPU, when it comes to her book I think she’ll possibly be frustratingly entertaining and I’m pretty certain her bravado and bluster is pretty much a front! 🤔
This team of shifters are so much fun and they’re truly beginning to feel like a family, not just teammates. I cannot wait for more in the series (and just more in general from Jenny!!)…
For me, this is a definite 5 star read and one I’d recommend you give a go!!!!

BLURB:
Love was a losing battle for this country music darling and a single dad, baseball star until one night brings them together and one small town sets the field for a possible winning streak.
They call me Lady Boss. Maneater. Queen. But beneath the makeup, blond wig, and glitzy costumes, I’m just a country girl who likes to sing. I don’t hate men, I’m just struggling to find a good one. I’ve learned my lesson. Fool me once, and it will never, ever happen again.
So I’m baffled when I meet Ford Sylver.
A superstar in his own right as centerfielder for the Chicago Anchors baseball team, plus a single dad to three adorable little girls, we share a moment when I save his firm backside and pretend he’s mine. Something that he can never be.
Only, when he suffers a season-changing injury and I need a place to disappear, we both end up back in Sterling Falls, where I’m suddenly and unwittingly his nanny.
There’s danger in having a wild side. I’ll try anything once. However, forced into close quarters with Ford, acting as his personal nurse, and caring for his three little ones might backfire. Because I’m staring at all I ever wanted and never thought would happen for me.
After losing at love in the past, could I finally be on a winning streak?
We know from previous books that the Sylver kids didn’t have an easy life for the most part growing up. They’ve all dealt with this different and it’s moulded them into who they are today.
Ford reacted by doing his damndest to get out of Sterling Falls and be the best baseball player he could be. For the most part he succeeded but he kinda forgot about the people who shared that upbringing with him and who looked out for him, to the point that his personal life has now imploded and his family know nothing about it.
Cadence (Cait) also didn’t have the best family life growing up, which we kinda know from her sister Enya’s book. Her parents (her father in particular) think the worst of her while having nothing to do with her and people she trusted have let her down to the point she trusts very few people and holds her cards incredibly close to the vest. She’s got Enya but her big sisters’ life just reinforces Cait’s realization that she’s missing out on something she so desperately wants, even if she won’t admit that fully to herself.
This pair met when they both needed to escape who they were and what was going on around them. Both back in town for a family event they forged a connection that first night that only grew as the book progressed.
I adored Ford’s girls, they were such a great part of the story. Cait, the gods I felt for her. She was harder on herself than others at times, understandably hesitant to trust due to her past, so when she put her trust in him it was heartbreaking to see that trust mishandled a few times by Ford! While his actions and comments could be attributed to what was going on at the time I honestly wanted to shake him as I was so frustrated by his lack of thought and his reactions on occasion.
I loved watching they progress from friends to something more, the slow burn was necessary and for me added to their story. The epilogue, catching up with our last two couples and seeing the Sylver siblings continue to rebuild their relationships were all so good. I’m really looking forward to Clay’s book.
This is a really good series that I most definitely would recommend.

About the books:

Pippa Grant wanted to write books, so she did. Before she became a USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling romantic comedy author, she was a young military spouse who got into writing as self-therapy. Today, she has more than 30 knee-slapping Pippa Grant titles and nine written as Jamie Farrell. When she’s not writing romantic comedies, she’s fumbling through being a mom, wife, and mountain woman, and sometimes trying to find hobbies. Her crowning achievement? Having impeccable timing for telling stories that will make people snort beverages out of their noses. Consider yourself warned.
That’s the subject line of the email I send to the Wife for Hire Agency. After all, I’m desperate.
Almost two years have gone by since I broke up with my last girlfriend. Little did I know the final time we were together, a little miracle was created.
In my thirty-five years I’ve never thought about being a father, had relegated myself to not having children, but that all changed when my ex-girlfriend leaves my daughter on my front doorstep.
Before I know it, I’m emailing the agency, getting paired with a woman twelve-years my junior, and trying desperately not to act on the attraction between us. But we’re both wearing rings, and she’s changed her last name.
Will we eventually give in, or will this marriage remain in name only?

TANNER
The summer before my senior year of college, I made the biggest mistake of my life. It wasn’t falling for my best friend’s little sister when I knew she was off-limits…it was leaving her behind thinking what we had was nothing more than a fling. Her pained cries as I walked away have played on a loop in my nightmares since that day. In the years that have passed, there hasn’t been a single achievement I’ve celebrated that wasn’t tainted by her absence. But now, it’s time. I’m going to get my girl back…no matter what it takes.
GRACE
Five years ago, I spent a whole summer learning, exploring, and falling in love with my lifelong protector. His future was bright, and as he broke me into a million pieces, he made sure I knew there wasn’t a place for me next to him under the bright, stadium lights. That girl who waited and hoped for him to come back is gone now, but just when I think I’ve moved on and created a life of my own, a ghost from my past reappears, determined to make things right. Tanner Lake may have once been everything to me, but those days are long over, aren’t they?
C.L. Rose is a wife and mother of two. She lives in Northeast Ohio with her husband, son, daughter, and dog, Tank. When she isn’t writing, you can find her reading in front of a space heater, wrapped in a thick blanket, probably complaining that she’s cold.
I kept my nose clean. Bad publicity was the last thing you wanted, and I’d had my share since my last breakup went public. We’d also just lost our last five games.
The boys and I decided to head to the islands for a little R&R. I’d never been so happy for a break. That was where I saw her. She didn’t seem to recognize me, which made it better, so I made my move. We didn’t exchange names or numbers. We shared one carefree night, that was all I wanted and that was all it was supposed to be.
A few months later, regret from that night had almost eaten away at me. I hadn’t been able to get her out of my mind. I wouldn’t say I fell in love with her, or maybe I did. All I knew was that night was the closest I’d ever come to insta-love and I wanted more but we’d had our fun. Yet, I was still mentally kicking myself for at least not getting her name.
We’re about to head into the playoffs when I return home and that is when the universe decides to bring us back together in one of the worst places ever. Only this time won’t be like the last, I decide I won’t let her slip through my fingers. This time, I’ve promised myself nothing, and all bets are off.
5 Stars from KDWebzbookie – “I absolutely adored this book! Dylan and Aurora were pure chemistry.”
5 Stars from Cajun Heat Book Blog – “Great start to the series and this reader can’t wait to see what happens next with Dominator’s Hockey team.”
5 Star Bookbub Review – “This book is a must read, page turner, and has all the feels.”
BLP REVIEW – Tracy
I’m going through a real hockey romance phase at the minute so ‘Inside The Penalty Box’ really caught my interest. I’ve read and really enjoyed some of S.L.’s books before and genuinely thought I’d love this one.
I liked Dylan. I really liked that he wasn’t your stereotypical ‘romance read sports player’ and wasn’t jumping anything with a pulse. I loved that once he knew who his ONS was, after kicking himself for months having not gotten her name or number, that he was ALL IN with Aurora and no one was gonna stop him from seeing if their connection could be more. His ex though…. The gods, cray-cray to the extreme!! 😳 On that note, one thing that did annoy me about our MMC was his holding back on info…. the man was not quick in the communication department and I understood Aurora’s frustration at times. TBH, she had more patience than he deserved at least once if not more during the story!!!
Aurora. I liked that she wanted to break out of her mould but also understood her feelings after she took the plunge and did something so out of character. I liked Aurora’s attitude and how she stood up for herself when it came to Dylan especially where she felt she wasn’t being given all the info she needed to make a decision about whether or not to see where things with him could go. Her relationship with her mother, that was something else. It was good that our FMC still held true to herself and that her mother’s thoughts and lifestyle choices hadn’t coloured her thoughts on relationships and love.
While I did enjoy ITPB for the most part, there’s were a couple of things that left me scratching my head come the end of the book and I was left pondering ‘why’ about someone’s actions and any further consequences that there might be…….
I’m hoping to see more of this pair in the Vancouver Dominators series going forward and I’m really looking forward to finding out more about Knox and Lorelai and exactly what happened in the past that has her reacting so badly him now!! 🤔

Jo McCall writes dark, contemporary and PNR romance. She is an avid reader of anything dark and steamy and when she isn’t writing, you can find her making a rather large dent in her TBR.
She is a lover of strong heroines who find their own and hot, sexy alpha males who might be a tad bit over-possessive. Jo loves to lose herself in her characters and the flaws and darkness that surround them.
There is no shame found here, and she often gets lost when writing out those erotic, steamy scenes that make women’s (and men’s) fantasies come true.
“There is nothing like getting lost in something you know is wrong, but still can’t resist.”
Jo currently resides in the beautiful state of Washington with her two dogs and has dreams of quitting her day job and traveling in a converted van around the states as she writes.
