Diego’s hand twitched with the need to wrap around her stomach and pull her in tighter.

“Hey, neighbor,” he whispered in her ear.

Hannah’s body shuddered against him, and his mouth watered. He wanted so badly to nibble her ear, then her neck, but he knew he’d struggle to stop at just that.

“Enjoying the show?” he asked.

Her gaze remained fixed on the window, staring inside at her husband with someone else.

“Why don’t you interrupt them?”

She shook her head, her hair brushing against his cheek. “It doesn’t matter.” Her voice was so low, the breeze almost snatched it away.

“No?” Diego’s hand snaked out, sliding along her belly. All his worst intentions rose to the forefront of his mind when, instead of jerking away, her legs shifted and her back pressed fully against his chest. “And what about you, Hannah? Do you get to do the same as your husband?”

She shook her head again, the scent of her hair almost minty, maybe something with eucalyptus.

“That doesn’t seem right. How about taking some revenge?” He breathed in that sharp scent of her, the intensity almost intoxicating. “Let me take care of you, mami.”

She let out the smallest gasp as her body shuddered against his again. “That wouldn’t be right.”

“I think it would be delicious.” He gave in to his need, brushing his lips over her shoulder. Her head shifted, providing him better access, and his body shook as he held back from giving in to temptation.

“Let me touch you,” he begged.

Hannah’s gaze shifted to his tattooed hand. “I hadn’t heard your motorcycle before today.” Her eyes roamed over the bike as if allowed to now that she’d mentioned it.

Diego smiled. “Angling for a ride?” he asked.

Her cheeks flushed, and the thought that she really was toyed with his mind.

“I couldn’t,” she said, her voice low, hesitant.

This woman wanted a chance to feel alive. Diego was tempted to toss her over his shoulder and give it to her.

“I guess not,” he said instead. “No telling what your husband would do if he came home to see you clinging to me and enjoying every minute of it.”

Her face lifted, a sliver of pain slipping over it almost too quickly to catch. She looked over her shoulder. “I should go.”

When she stepped back, he reached out, not sure what he wanted to do, but knowing that making her flinch wasn’t it.

Diego let his hand drop and backed away. “I’d never hurt you, mami.”

Her eyes flicked to his, but in a twitching way, and then she ran home.

That was safer for them both. Much safer than what he wanted to do. He’d been sent to blackmail her husband, not to steal the man’s wife for himself.

Elizabeth Standish is an attorney based in Denver, Colorado who has: had a solo practice, written other people’s articles, presented criminal appeals to the Colorado Court of Appeals, visited clients in prison, and worked in-house in biotechnology. When she finally got tired of telling other people’s stories in her legal briefs, and telling happy endings only to herself, she wrote her first novel. Just like her first heroine, Emmalyn, her first and most constant love is riding horses. She shares her home with an ever-changing menagerie of animals.
