“You. In.” She pointed to the room behind me, and I glanced over my shoulder.
“In there?” I smirked again, but her cheeks didn’t get any redder, to my astonishment. “Is now really the time?”
She pushed against my naked chest, her steely eyes fixed on my face the whole time, then slammed the door behind us with her foot.
“If you wanted some private time together, you just had to say so.” I joked, leaning back against the chair that was positioned in front of the mirror in my dressing room.
“You think this is funny?” Kate asked, her head tilted to the side.
“Actually … yeah.” I nodded and smiled again, not unkindly.
Kate looked down, and for one God-awful moment I thought she was going to cry.
Then, she did something better than crying. Holy mother of crap sticks, was this better than crying.
She raised her hands to the top of her black button-up shirt—and she undid the top button. Creamy, white skin is exposed, defined collarbones, teasing my eyes down to—
She undid another button. Holy fuck, what was Kate doing? Her cleavage heaved in front of me, and I got a hint, just a hint of her black lacy bra.
“It cannot be a coincidence that one man is shirtless in front of me six times in two weeks.”
I grinned. She’d counted.
That totally means she’s into it.
Then she did something that completely surprised me. Hell, it shocked the living daylight out of me. In one fluid movement, she grabbed the sides of her shirt and pulled, popping open her entire top and then shrugging it over her shoulders so she stood there in the world’s hottest black, lacy bra, skin-tight black denim jeans and these shoes—how the hell did I not notice them before?—that were red, high, and sexy as sin.
I swallowed. “So … this is a revenge …” Swallow, “… strip?”
“This is me, trying to do something to get you to pay attention and listen when I ask you to do something.” Kate’s voice was honey as it melted into me.
I raised my hand to the back of my neck and rubbed at the muscles there that had suddenly become tight with tension. “Oh, I’m paying attention, all right.” I widened my eyes. There was absolutely no doubt about that right now.

“Get back stage, Lee. Seriously. This is your last warning.”
I swallowed again, and felt the clamminess of perspiration beading my brow. Was it hot in here? It sure felt hot.
She stepped close to me, till her chest was almost touching my chest. Shit, she smelt like soap and hairspray and … apples. Delicious.
“I …” My gaze flicked to her lips, and I wondered if it would really be that bad if I kissed her. After all, that wouldn’t be promising her marriage, and maybe she’d be up for a casual thing. And her lips—they were so red, and plump, and—oh God, she just licked them with that sweet-as-hell little tongue, and—
The palm of her hand made contact with my face before I even registered her arm moving. Five elegant fingers stung my cheek and I jerked backward, clutching my face in pain. “What the hell?”
Kate walked over to where her shirt lay on the floor and picked it up, casually shrugging it on. She had the biggest shit-eating grin on her face, and I couldn’t help but give a little smile myself. I’d not seen her look so animated since she first boarded the bus.
“I told you it was your final warning,” she said, doing up her buttons, then turned to the door, wrenching it open and making a sweeping gesture with her arm, allowing me passage through. “Now, Mr Collins, if you please.”
“Thanks,” I mumbled, walking past her and out into the corridor. I passed Xander’s door, and a thought flashed through my mind. What if she stripped for all the guys to get them on stage? I couldn’t have her just—
“Lee?” The voice halted me in my tracks. I spun to face her.
She threw my black shirt at me. “Put some clothes on.”

Dodge City, Kansas

Byron

Tuesday 5:45 am April 6, 2015

The sun finally broke over the horizon and a few birds were seen in the sky. It was a new day but the same old routine. The red light flashed 5:45 am and the alarm rang loud enough to wake the dead. A young man rolled over in his bed and quickly shut it off. He stretched out all of his tightened muscles, still weary from yesterday’s shift. He popped himself out of his bed to make it, not wasting any time burning sunlight. He grabbed his uniform in his fists and headed for the shower, as per his usual routine.

Breakfast was quick and easy. Time was not his ally on the daylight side, so he kept to his staples: a bowl of plain oatmeal with a glass of milk. Placing the oatmeal container back into the pantry, he realized he was down to his last cylinder of oats, and at that, he was close to empty. He made a mental note to pick some more up in a day or so. Bottles of medication lined his counter, organized first by size then the symptoms they subdued. Byron sighed, it had been a great few days and even though he was pleased with the results of the new medication, its process was still just as taxing as before. The muted voices forced their presence on his conscience again as the flashes of light he had come to know was centered on their tone. And that tone was not a happy one. No, if he was honest with himself, they were pissed off. In his peripheral, streaks of red and black danced violently with each pill he popped into mouth. Forcing them to behave yet again.

After rinsing and placing his dishes in the sink, he grabbed his store keys and ventured out into the blinding sunshine. Like clockwork his OCD kicked in, and the double-checking of all the windows and doors ensued to make sure they stood secured. Once outside, he sighed and began his two-block walk to work. Bryon was definitely not the driving type.

He did not seem to notice the deserted streets or the eerie silence that followed him. He gave it about as much attention as he did on most other days, slim to none. His focus was laser spot-on, mostly with his head down watching his feet. His pace, his gait, even the placement of his feet between the gaps in the sidewalk where they were divided was lining up measured with such fanatical precision. He was confident he had lined up with his footfalls from the day before and the day before that.

A few garbage cans laid on their sides, spilled over at the end of a neighbor’s driveway, put a small pause in his obsessive routine. He quickly righted them and continued on his way without missing a beat. He half-sprinted, half-skipped, catching himself up to where he would have been if he had not stopped. Rounding the last corner, his destination loomed off in the distance, just across the silent street. Various newspaper and circulars flew across his path. He made a mental note to come hit the curbs around the restaurant with his broom and dustpan to get it back up to his level of acceptance.

He approached the door, keys in hand. His awareness kicked into high gear when he reached for the doorknob. The door had been left slightly ajar. He realized he must have done it himself. He was not an extremely forgetful person, but every sixth or seventh time he worked, he would forget to lock up the door behind him. It felt familiar to him, so he felt no trepidation when he reached to push the door open. He stopped only long enough to let it register, more likely to mentally kick himself to not do it again. He walked in secure in his belief that everything was status quo.

His entry was uneventful.

Byron headed to the time clock, and punched in, 6:30 A.M. on the dot. In the four years since his sixteenth birthday when he began working at Nana’s Cafe, he has never once been late. Come rain, shine, snow or lightning. Somehow, he always adjusted and just trudged through it. Without fail he would cross the threshold, none the worse for wear.

He gathered up his cleaning supplies, and heading straight to work. “If you got time to lean, you got time to clean.” Nana used to chant. Byron eventually got sick of hearing it, so he filled every second of his shift on the clock doing his humdrum routine. He made little games out of it, always trying to get that one spot just one degree cleaner than last time or maybe he would work on how fast he did it. Instead of something taking ten minutes, he would push himself to do it in nine, and so on and so on. Bathrooms are always first and luckily, they were in fair shape. In fact, curiously enough, they were about as clean as he had left them last the night before. Hmmm…Very lucky. As it turns out, he was almost never, ever, lucky.

He turned and headed to the dining area and noticed the disarray. He sighed to himself thinking that the night shift forgot to clean up before they left. Once that is done, he headed over to the main kitchen and finished getting the coffee pots ready, placing all the cups’ handles facing to the right. They were lined up perfectly as if the very cups themselves were for sale.

After a quick checking of the time on his watch, 7:59 am, he walked over to the main window and flips over the open sign. The small buzzing sound from his watch alerts him to the time. Its 8:00am, he scanned outward to the barren streets wondering where his co-workers are. They were late.

A soft breeze picked up accented by some newspapers seen tumbling down the road. The faint outline of the heading is still visible “Outbreak Spre-“.

He takes his breaks on time; he even makes himself a small lunch not wanting too much to be taken out of his paycheck. The day was the slowest it has ever been in the history of the café.

No customers.

No one came into work.

No one was out on the streets of the town.

No cars passed by.

Not even the garbage truck, which was late for Tuesday’s pick up as well.

He was alone.

His shift ended at 4:00 pm; he clocked out, remembering to keep his promise to himself to lock the door behind him and began his trek home. Deciding to stray away from the sidewalk for the first time, he kept to the center of the street, with his shadow cast behind him he disappeared around the last corner to his home. His routine would not change the next day or even the next day after that. Despite several days of this, he failed to realize his routine remained the only meaning in his life he had left.

This is Byron.

This is his home town of Dodge City, Kansas.

Population: 1.

EXCERPT
There was so little noise outside, it was almost peaceful. No car horns. Barely any city traffic. No screaming people. Just
the rustling of a slight winter breeze that wove its way around the tall buildings nearby. I closed my eyes and briefly took in the quiet. As great as it was sitting in the safety of Matt’s comforting warmth, it wasn’t long before my mind wandered back to George and Richard. They were out there somewhere.
“I’m going up to have a shower, okay?” I told Matt.
“Sure. You’re worried about them, aren’t you?”
“Yeah,” I answered. I pulled out of his embrace and stood up to go back inside.
“You go ahead,” he said. He looked at his watch. “I’ll wait until after dinner.”
I leaned down and kissed him, then went inside and up to my room. I heard the elevator chime just before I closed my door. It meant Matt would be busy, so I had some time. I took out the phone Matt gave me, and the piece of paper I had used to scribble down the phone number. I knew that eventually, Matt would find out what I was about to do. I looked at the two items in my hand, and briefly wondered how much of Matt’s trust I was about to strip away. I thought that he’d just have to understand that I had no choice but to do this. I opened the text application of the phone and keyed in the number. I sent the simple text message.
This is Kate Samuel. What exactly do you want from me? Do you have George and Richard Wilkinson? If you do, please let
them go.
I looked at the message and hesitated for a short time. I quickly hit the send button and hoped I wasn’t making things worse. There was no reply right away, so I tucked the phone and piece of paper into my purse and went to the next room to find some clothes to change into after my shower. I picked out a simple, two-piece cotton pajama pant set, and a sweater and jeans to wear the next day. I took the things back to my room and undressed in the room before going into the shower.

*********************

I left the bathroom and wore my towel to get dressed in the bedroom. Fuck, I thought as I walked into the room. I really fucked up now. Matt was standing beside the bed. My purse was open on the bed and the phone he gave me was in the hand he held up to me.
“Why did you take out the phone?” I asked as I towel-dried my hair. I was doing my best to be nonchalant.
“I came up here to call you down for dinner,” he said. “The phone was ringing, so I answered.”
“Why did you do that?” Inside, my stress was mounting. I was in deep shit.
“I just gave you the phone to use an hour ago, Kate. I thought it was one of my staff or my assistant. I wasn’t going to
answer at first, but it kept ringing, so I did.”
“So who was it?” I asked, pretending to be innocent.
“You know who it was, Kate,” he did nothing to contain any of his disappointment or anger. “What have you done?”
“What did they say?” I could deal with his anger another time. If they took the time to call back, there was a chance we
could bargain with them.
He could barely look at me.
“You just put us and your friends in more danger, Kate.” So much for diplomacy and mincing words.
Hero contempt.
“What do you mean?”
“The person on the other end said, ‘You can run but you can’t hide. You and your bitch are dead,’ then hung up and sent us a text with a picture of an amputated finger.”
I gasped in horror. “You don’t think it’s… ”
“I don’t know if they hurt your friends. I called Bateman. Get dressed. He’s on his way over. I requested that he send some officers to come and help my team keep watch.” He sat on the bed, exasperated.
“I…I’m sorry, Matt,” I admitted.
All my hope was deflated. And I felt brand new waves of guilt from my most recent transgression. I put on the sweater and jeans, knowing I would probably not be sleeping anytime soon. I sat beside him, hoping the proximity would help him understand why I did it.
“I thought I could help by trying…”
“You were wrong, Kate,” he said as he stood and began pacing the floor. “You didn’t help. You did exactly what you promised
not to do only hours ago. Now they know where we are. And you’ve probably compromised whatever the police may have intended to do.”
Matt’s own phone rang and he ignored it the first time. When it rang again, he tilted it to see who was calling. It was his
security team leader.  Detective Bateman was downstairs.

Synopsis

Four words continue to haunt me . . .
You. Have. Breast. Cancer.

I associate them with the upheaval of my life to this point. The last few months have been a test of my strength . . . mentally, emotionally, and physically. Cancer is a monster. It preys on your mind and it consumes you, consistently reminding you of how your life used to be. Life before cancer. I was a successful business woman, running my own design firm, and was happily married to my college sweetheart. My life seemed perfect. Until it suddenly came crashing down all around me.

So, here I am, in the midst of treatment, incinerating the remnants of my shattered marriage and attempting to piece the rest of my life back together. With three amazing friends pushing me forward, the ‘post-chemo’ finish line is coming into view.

And then . . . there’s him. The man I never anticipated. The one who breathes hope and meaning back into my life. A man who kisses my scars and shows me that I’m beautiful. I never expected him. Hell, I never expected cancer. I’m finally ready to write my future, a future I never planned on, but one that is better than I could’ve ever imagined.

Snippet

After turning on “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child I got to work on the pancakes. The butter was melting in the glass pie pans in the oven while I whisked the batter and sang along to the song. “After all of the darkness and sadness. Soon comes happiness.” Setting the bowl down on the counter, I danced over to the oven to pull the pans out and continued to shake my ass.

When I turned back around to get the bowl, I noticed Blake leaning against the wall in the doorway watching me with humor dancing in his eyes. “As a child I dreamt of finding Wonder Woman dancing provocatively in my kitchen while making dinner. Guess they’re right when they say, never give up on your dreams.” He smirked as he pushed off the wall. “You look hot. Don’t let me stop you.”

He grabbed a bottle of sparkling water and perched himself on a stool. “What are you making anyway?”

“German pancakes. A friend and I used to make them growing up. They are the perfect mix of sweet and salty with the butter and syrup combo . . . and can make a very sticky mess.”

“A sticky Wonder Woman? Wow. This just keeps getting better.”

I placed the pans back in the oven to bake and put the bowl in the sink to soak. “So Doc McHottie has a thing for Wonder Woman, huh?” I taunted him while wiping my hands on a kitchen towel.

“Doc McHottie has a thing for the Wonder Woman that was dancing in his kitchen a few moments ago.”

EXCERPT

“I swear to fucking God,” I snarled as I stomped a pattern around Eliza’s hospital room. She had just been wheeled out, but my anger and anxiety filled the room in her absence.
“Calm. Down,” Slate said from the doorway. “It’s no big deal. I’ll get it back.”
“Fuck you.”
“You’re welcome. Now, get your shit together and remember who the hell you are talking to.”
Eliza didn’t have insurance, and she had freaked when the doctor told her that he wanted to run a CAT scan because of the trauma to her face and head. She’d flat-out refused, spouting off some crap about not going into debt by racking up a huge hospital bill she’d eventually have to pay. She’d sworn she was okay, but I’d absolutely not been anything even resembling okay.
So I’d lost it. I’d snapped at her like a fucking asshole. Then I’d shouted at the doctor for reasons that didn’t even make sense. In turn, he threatened to call security, which only pissed me off more. It was a clusterfuck in that room until Slate came in and physically pinned me against the wall. While I was trying to get my shit under control, Erica was apparently informing administration that she and Slate would be financially responsible for Eliza’s hospital visit. While I was relieved as they wheeled her out of the room, I was sick and fucking tired of feeling like a broke-ass, worthless dick all the time. As it often was, my anger was aimed in the wrong place, and Slate was the only man in the room.
“Get my shit together?” My heart pounded in my chest, and every muscle in my body strained under the mounting stress. “I’d like to see how the hell you’d react if Erica looked like that and there wasn’t a fucking thing in the world you could do to help her.”
Slate’s eyes turned dark as his jaw clenched. “It was different. But I’ve been there,” he stated matter-of-factly. “It was the worst day of my life. I wasn’t even the one who got to make the piece of shit pay either. But honestly, Till, sometimes you have to accept that it’s not the way things get done or who does them. As long as, in the end, they are done. She’s getting that CAT scan right now, and you can sleep easy tonight knowing that she’s okay. It doesn’t matter one bit who signs the check that pays for that kind of peace of mind.”
“It matters to me. You have no fucking idea how it feels to be so goddamn helpless all the time. I can’t do this anymore. I’ve only truly had her for less then twenty-four hours and I’ve already failed to fucking protecting her and provide for her. My boxing trainer had to pay for her medical bills. It’s embarrassing!”
“It’s only embarrassing if you let it be.” He shrugged and settled into the chair next to the door.
I continued to pace. I couldn’t get over the heavy weight of failure compressing my chest. “Why the fuck would she want to settle for someone like me? I failed out of high school. I work sixty-three hours a week for minimum wage so that I can barely pay the bills on a shithole apartment. For fuck’s sake, I have two brothers I want to give the world, but last week, she had to buy us groceries. Oh, and there is always that fun fact that I’m going deaf. One day, she really will have to take care of me! I can’t handle knowing that she has to settle for a future filled with struggles just to be with me. I love her. I really fucking do. But at what point do I let her go because I know she’d have a better life with someone else?” I finished my rant on a yell.
“Wow. You have a really gone off the deep end. She’s not some puppy you can find a better home for.” He stretched his legs out and crossed them at his ankles.
If possible, it managed to piss me off more. I was in emotional upheaval and he was getting comfortable.
“Just leave me alone. I can’t deal with your shit right now.”
“You want to go pro?” he asked randomly.
“What I want is for you to leave.”
“Is that a no?” He crossed his arms over his chest.
“What the fuck are you talking about? Nothing has changed. I still don’t have the time. Honestly, I think I need to give up boxing altogether. Maybe try to find another job or something.”
“I’ll bankroll eight hundred a week. Quit your jobs and come work for me in the ring. It comes with health insurance for you and the boys too.”
I stared at him, awestruck. That was double what I was bringing home each week.
I’d always heard that you couldn’t judge a man’s character by the balance in his bank account. Thank fuck for that because character might be the only place I wasn’t overdrawn. And right then, Slate’s offer sounded a whole lot like pity. No matter how appealing it sounded, I wanted to make it without having to rely on anyone else. I couldn’t afford to sacrifice character.
“Why are you doing this right now? What part of that conversation confused you? I don’t want your charity.”
“It’s not charity. I’m gonna make a shit-ton of money off your ass. This isn’t a free ride. I’ll get all of your winnings until you’ve paid me back. Then anything you make over that, I get thirty-three percent. Erica’s been eyeing this condo on the beach in Florida. I’m hoping you can help me out and buy that for her.”
Outstanding. Slate wants to buy a condo on the beach and I just want to keep the electricity on.
“It has to be hard being you.” My voice dripped with sarcasm, but it only made Slate smile.
“I guess you won’t know until you try. I made every single penny I have from boxing. If you think money will solve all your problems, then put whatever preconceived notions you have about my motives aside and take my offer. But if you decide to refuse, you should know I won’t make it again.”
“Why now? Less than a month ago, you told me I wasn’t ready. Where was your offer to bankroll me then?”
“I’m not going to lie to you. You’re not ready. Not if you want to be great. But with enough time, I can get you there. You’re raw right now, and despite whatever you think, you’re driven by something greater than the almighty dollar or dreams of stardom.” He stood up and walked over to me. “To answer your question about why now, I was wrong. You’re not hungry for more in life. You’re fucking starving. I can work with that.
“Did you even listen to yourself while you were talking? Not one single thing you said was because Till Page wanted more money or a nicer car. You were concerned about Eliza and the boys…but never Till.” He poked my chest right over my heart. “I’m making an investment in you, Till. It’s no handout. I believe you’re going to set the boxing world on fire, because every time you put on those gloves, you’re doing it for them. Say yes. Accept the offer. Quit your jobs. Take a week off to take care of her. Then get your ass in my ring.”
I had no words. If I spoke, I was going to look like a sniffling little bitch. So I nodded instead.
“Good. I’m going to find Erica and get some coffee. I’ll send over the contracts and your first paycheck in the morning.” He turned and headed for the door.
I stood in the middle of an empty hospital room where my fantasy and reality had collided. Finally, I had the break I had dreamed of, but it had taken almost losing Eliza to get it. I would forever remember the way I felt in that moment. Cracking my neck and shaking out my arms, I decided I was done letting the world run over me.
Slate had just handed me my one chance to make a better life, and I was going in with gloves blazing. For the first time in my fucking life, I was climbing through the ropes.

BLP Review ~ Rebecca

Fighting Silence is real, poignant, captivating, engaging and flawlessly written, it warms the heart and leaves you with a smile. When a book gives you the feels then the author has done their job, when it makes you passionate and excited, wanting to shout and make everyone read it then it’s special, and when it’s still in your head several days after finishing then you know it will be a reread, one you come back to as the emotional impact was so impressive.

When the blog tour came up I didn’t request an arc as I had never heard of Aly Martinez and was totally overcommitted time wise, however when the excerpts went live I was intrigued and impressed so requested one and started immediately. I finished in one day, could not put it down and walk away, it grabbed me that much. I’m not a great lover of NA so that’s what put me off initially and it would have been such a shame because Till and Eliza’s story is the best I’ve read for a long time in this genre and it is truly a special book.

Their story is told from childhood through to teenagers and then adulthood, I can’t express how refreshing this relationship is, despite the trials, tribulations and tragedy that life, as it does, throws at them they are, were and will always be Till & Eliza first, foremost and forever. No others really ever come into the equation for these two, they make each other complete, they make their own family and that family is the priority above all else for them both. When life throws you lemons make lemonade is the saying, well Till & Eliza do it all the way through, both born to parents who care little or nothing for their offspring they create their own little safe place where fantasy and reality merge eventually (you’ll get it when you read).

“Not fair? Oh, so now, we’re talking about fair? Well, let me tell you how f****ng not fair this is to me. I fell in love with a man whose fantasy is crawling through my window to escape reality. All the while, my fantasy is walking out that door to navigate reality by his side. I’m pretty sure that is the definition of not fair.”

Fighting Silence is about the fantasy versus the reality, the strength needed to fight to find balance and happiness in the crazy fucked up mish mash of moments that make up this messy world we live in, how sometimes all you can do is fight your corner, grab your happy moments and see where it leaves you – can fantasy and reality merge?
Till is just outstanding as a character, he’s strong, loyal, loves unconditionally, has such a strong sense of family despite growing up with no role models and even with silence threatening to take him he fights for his brothers, for Eliza and for a better life for them all.

Eliza from the first is in love with Till Page, that love grows and changes with age and life experience, expands to include his two brothers and is a total joy to read. Together these two will steal your heart, you’ll read their story and cannot help but be invested in it – it’s emotional, beautiful, poignant, tragic and totally captivating from first page to last. I wish I were more eloquent and I wish I could get those one click fingers pressing for this book because, when it comes down to it, we read to have a few hours outside of our real lives immersed in a story that can make characters come alive in our head and hearts – Aly Martinez has done just that, Till, Eliza, Quarry & Flint will steal your heart, give you the feels and stay in your head long after finishing.

fighting teaser #3

fighting silence ebook cover

Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it’s the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I’ve always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine. I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn’t a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I’m on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.

Fighting for my career.

Fighting the impending silence.

Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that’s the sound I’ll miss the most.
