Ava

Rowan stands in the doorway silently watching me. His eyes gleam, and my pulse jumps.

“I couldn’t resist,” I say softly, a little breathless. “I stole this from the boutique today.”

Opening my hand, I let a small chain slip through my fingers. A different light enters his eyes, and my stomach tightens. Without a word, he crosses the space to where I’m standing. Grasping my wrist, he turns my hand over.

“You stole cheap costume jewelry when I would buy you anything?”

“I suppose I ought to be punished.” My voice is pouty, and I lift my eyes to meet his.

They blaze a trail down my body as he studies me. The white shirt hangs open, and my nipples are beaded. Lifting a hand, he cups my breast, rolling a stiff bud between his fingers, teasing it, lengthening it. I sigh audibly.

“Discipline.”

Shrugging my shoulders, I allow the shirt to slide down my arms. It falls all the way to the floor, leaving me bare to him. I walk to where the wedge is located and kneel down. On the silky carpet, I lean forward and place my elbows on the floor, lifting my ass so he can see all of me.

A little hiss fills the air, and I close my eyes to the sound of Rowan removing his clothes. I remember the first time he taught me to do this. I was so nervous and afraid. By the end, I had come so hard, I begged him to do it again.

He goes to the table and takes the mask, holding it in his hand. “Up,” he orders, and I push up from my elbows, sitting back on my feet to look up at him.

He’s completely nude, his erection pointing toward my face. Our eyes lock, and I lean forward, opening my mouth. With one hand, I guide the mushroom tip between my lips, flicking my tongue around the edges. He tastes salty, and his skin smells like the soap from his shower. He exhales a groan, and I take him deeper, pulling and sucking as he wraps the mask around my eyes, tying it behind my head.

His shaft is wet, and I use the slickness to slide my fist down to the base and back up. My lips are focused on his tip, sucking and lightly touching him with my teeth.

I’m rewarded with another low groan, and his fingers cup my cheeks. I can feel him thickening. I can feel the muscles in his legs tightening under my hand.

“Down.” He commands, his voice thick.

I obey, satisfaction warming my stomach. The French doors are open, and the shush of the breakers on the sea below fills the air around us. I turn and wait as he takes the thigh restraints and wraps them around my legs. Then he lifts my wrists, placing them in the cuffs attached to each side. He closes them, and moves me to the wedge. I lean forward on my stomach, ass up, hands bound to the outsides of my spread thighs.

My breath comes in little pants as I wait for the crop…

Priscilla Story, the self-proclaimed “wild child” of the straight-laced Story clan, has always had a knack for getting herself trouble. Except this time, her “growing problem” is going to require a Daddy sooner than later…or she can kiss her inheritance good-bye.

Shane Olson, who previously dated Priscilla’s sister, Margaret, isn’t opposed to a marriage of convenience for the sake of furthering his business interests, but Priscilla – with her wild ways – is just about the last woman he’d choose to marry.

In order to make the marriage look convincing, they end up having to spend more time together than they’d originally planned. When rolling stone, Priscilla, who lives by the seat of her muu-muu, and seriously-ambitious Shane, who’s had his whole life planned since he was eleven, start falling for each other, it’s going to take a whole lot of compromise for this Bohemian and her Businessman to find their happily ever after.

COVER REVEAL ~ Didn’t I Warn You (Bad For You #1) by Amber Bardan

cover reveal.JPG

In this alpha-driven romance perfect for fans of Vi Keeland and S.L. Jennings, the price of one woman’s passion is everything she holds dear

Not everything dangerous is bad.

From the moment Angelina laid eyes on him, she fell into a fantasy. Mysterious, foreign, gorgeous, Haithem offered her what she needed most—a chance to feel again.

But Haithem is much more than he appears to be. He lives in a world of danger where everything comes at a price.

For Angelina, that price is her future.

He’s ensured the life she’s left behind is in tatters. Made her family believe she’s dead. He talks about protecting her, about keeping her safe, but she can’t distinguish his truth from his lies. She can’t separate her pleasure from his betrayal.

Haithem warned her. He told her he’d make her heart race, her body come alive, and her most primal needs rush to the surface. His for the taking.

He didn’t say she’d come to love the devil who’s destroying her, even as he keeps her prisoner.

After spending years imagining fictional adventures, Amber finally found a way to turn daydreaming into a productive habit. She now spends her time in a coffee-fuelled adrenaline haze, writing romance with a thriller edge.

She lives with her husband and children in semi-rural Australia, where if she peers outside at the right moment she might just see a kangaroo bounce by.

Amber is an award winning writer, Amazon Bestselling Author, and member of Romance Writers of Australia, Melbourne Romance Writers Guild, and Writers Victoria.

EXCERPT

Clemency wasn’t accustomed to setting her alarm for five thirty in the morning, but in fact, she was wide awake before it even went off. By six o’clock, showered and dressed in jeans and a gray sweater, she’d left home and headed over on foot to the address she’d given Sam last night. At this time of the morning the sun was nothing more than a bright white blur in a hazy white sky, and there was still a dense mist hovering over the sea. But the temperature was set to rise significantly.

Hers too, it seemed. As she neared the address, her palms grew damp. Always attractive.

He was there ahead of her, leaning against the side of his rental car as he waited for her, and on his own. The butterflies in Clemency’s stomach took flight like a swirling flock of birds.

“I didn’t know if Belle would be coming with you,” she said.

“At six fifteen in the morning?” He looked amused. “She decided to go for the extra hour in bed.”

Quelle surprise.

“OK,” said Clemency. “Well, I wouldn’t have asked you to view this place if I didn’t think it was the perfect fit. Like I told you last night, the vendor’s desperate. She’s due to close next week and the buyers have pulled out. The whole chain’s on the verge of collapse.” She shrugged. “You’re a cash buyer. It’s a stunning property. It was more than you were looking to spend, but Cissy’s prepared to accept an offer. Honestly? If I could choose any flat here in St. Carys, this is the one I’d go for.”

A flicker of a smile. “Is that your hard-sell sales pitch?”

“I don’t do hard sells. When you view the place for yourself, you’ll see what I mean.”

“Why did the buyers pull out?”

“The wife just discovered her husband’s been having an affair. So instead of them moving down here from Nottingham, she’s filing for divorce.” Clemency held up the keys to the property. “Want to take a look?”

Sam nodded. “That’s why we’re here.”

But it wasn’t the only reason they were here. He knew that as well as she did. There was an elephant in the room, and Clemency wasn’t going to be the one to mention it.

Instead, with a brisk professional nod of her own, she said, “Let’s go.”

The apartment was empty. Cissy was currently in Edinburgh and most of the furniture was already in storage, waiting to be moved into her new house.

It didn’t take long to view the open-plan kitchen, the two bedrooms, the bathrooms. and the spectacular living room. As they stood outside on the wide wraparound balcony and surveyed the view over Beachcomber Bay, the sun finally broke through the early morning haze. The sea was visible now, glittering and palest turquoise. A lone jogger was running along the pristine, just-washed sand with a dog at his heels. Seagulls wheeled lazily overhead, no doubt keeping an eye on the fishing boats chugging into the harbor.

And now the sun was growing stronger, brighter, warming their faces. Sam said, “Did you arrange for this to happen?”

“You mean for the chain to collapse and the sale of this place to fall through? Yes, of course I did. Just call me Machiavelli.”

He looked at her. “Actually, I was talking about the sun coming out.”

“Oh.” Her stomach tightened. “Well, that too. Obviously.”

“Thought so.”

“What’s the verdict then?”

“It is perfect. Exactly what I wanted. But you already knew that.” Sam paused. “What are the neighbors like?”

“Scottish. Very fond of bagpipes.” Clemency smiled. “Don’t worry. It’s a retired couple below, very charming and very quiet. And a middle-aged divorcée on the ground floor. No orgies. I already checked.”

“Shall we go back inside?”

Clemency allowed him to lead the way. When she’d locked the French windows, he said, “Are we going to talk about it?”

“About you buying this property? I do hope so.”

“I meant the other thing.”

“Oh. The other thing.” Her heart broke into a gallop. “We don’t have to. Really, it’s fine. It was…nothing.”

For a couple of seconds Sam didn’t say anything. The silence was broken only by the distant swoosh of waves breaking on to the beach and the cry of a lone seagull overhead.

When he spoke again, his gaze was unwavering and intense. “But it wasn’t nothing, was it?”

Clemency turned, walked through to the kitchen, and poured herself a tumbler of water from the tap. She drank half of it and seated herself on one of the high stools around the marble-topped central island. “It was three years ago. You passed the time by flirting with a stranger. When the flight was over, you remembered you were married and guessed your wife might not be too amused if she found the stranger’s card in your pocket. It’s actually a sign that you’re not a complete bastard,” she said lightly. “You resisted temptation. You should be proud.”

“I wasn’t proud.” Sam shook his head. “I should never have done it.”

“Well, you’re divorced now, so it’s irrelevant anyway. What happened?” asked Clemency. “Did you do it again and get caught?”

She’d said it in a lighthearted way so he’d know she wasn’t bitter, that she understood these things had a habit of happening, especially to men who walked around looking like he did.

There was, after all, only so much beauty a girl could resist.

“Actually,” said Sam, “she didn’t divorce me. She died.”

EXCERPT REVEAL ~ Mister Moneybags by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

MMB banner 1

IMG_5273
I met Bianca in an elevator.

She was on her way to interview me when we got stuck.

The beautiful, raven-haired reporter assumed I was a delivery guy because of the way I was dressed.

She had no clue I was really Dex Truitt, the wealthy, successful businessman she’d dubbed “Mister Moneybags”—her afternoon appointment.

Bianca told me how much she hated Dex’s type—snobby, over educated, silver- spooned men who didn’t appreciate the simple things in life.

So, after the elevator finally started moving again, I cancelled the interview and let her believe I was someone I wasn’t—a bike messenger named Jay. I loved the way she looked at the fake me and didn’t want it to end.

I began dating her as “Jay”—all the while letting her interview the real me over email.

I didn’t expect that our chemistry online would be just as hot.

I didn’t expect the mess I’d gotten myself into.

I didn’t expect that Jay and Dex would fall in love with her.

And she was falling for two men.

Only, both men were me.

And when she found out, we were both going to lose her.

Nothing could have prepared me for that day. And I certainly wasn’t prepared for what came after.

All good things must come to an end, right?
Except our ending was one I didn’t see coming.

MEET BIANCA

I sighed audibly. Are we even moving? It was seriously the slowest elevator I’d ever taken. Frustrated, and maybe a bit anxious to get the interview over with, I took another shot at the elevator panel. Again, pressing the button repeatedly, I groaned, “Come on. I’m already freakin’ late.”

I breathed a sigh of relief when the car seemed to finally pick up speed. But then, it jolted to an abrupt stop, and the elevator went pitch black.

“Well now you’ve gone and broken the damn thing,” a deep voice said from behind me. Startled, I jumped and bobbled my cell phone in the dark, which resulted in it falling. From the sound of it smashing against the floor, I knew it had broken.

“Shit! Look what you made me do.” I bent over and patted the floor, but I couldn’t find it. “Can you at least give me some light so I can find my phone?”

“It would be my pleasure.”

“Thank you,” I huffed.

“If I had a cell phone on me.”

“Are you kidding? You don’t have a cell phone on you? Who walks around without their cell phone?”

“Maybe you should try it. If you weren’t so obsessed with yours, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.”

I stood, and my hands went to my hips. “How so?”

“Well, you were so busy typing away on your phone, you didn’t even notice another passenger was in the car with you.”

“And?”

“Had you seen me, you wouldn’t have jumped hearing my voice and broken your phone. Then we would have had light, and you would be able to see that elevator panel well enough to push that button another twenty or thirty times. I’m sure that would’ve helped.”

I felt the man moving around behind me.

“What are you doing?”

When he answered, his voice came from a different place. It was to my left and beneath me. “I’m on the floor looking for your cell phone.”

It really was pitch dark. I couldn’t see a thing, but I felt the air move, and I knew he must have stood back up.

“Put your hand out.”

“You’re going to put my phone in it, right?”

“No, I’ve taken down my pants and I’m going to stick my dick in it. Christ, you’re really a bitch, aren’t you?”

Thinking he couldn’t see me, I smiled at his sarcasm and put out my hand. “Just give me my phone.”

MEET DEX

Wow. My little ball player was quite the fox.

I’d only seen her from the back before the lights went out. Now, I was staring into her beautiful, big brown eyes, feeling like this elevator mishap wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

She cleared her throat. “The lights came back, but we’re still stuck.”

I clicked on some of the buttons. “Seems that way. But this is a step in the right direction. I bet this thing will be moving in no time.”

And by this thing moving, I do not mean my dick, although I could have sworn I felt it twitch when she just licked her beautiful full lips.

Do that again.

Fuck.

She is beautiful.

My eyes travelled down the length of her body then back up again, loving how the small buttons on her conservative blouse formed a path up to her delicate neck. I wouldn’t have minded sucking on that skin.

Maybe I could entice her to play hooky with me.

“Where are you headed once we get out of here?” I asked.

“The thirty-fourth floor,” she said.

What?

What is she doing going up to my floor?

I know she doesn’t work for me. I would have remembered that face, those eyes.

“What kind of business you have going on up there?”

“I actually have the pleasure of interviewing Mister Moneybags himself.”

My stomach sank.

Ohhhh.

This didn’t bode well for me.

I swallowed then cocked my head to the side and played dumb. “Who?”

“The elusive Dexter Truitt. He’s the CEO of Montague Enterprises. They occupy the entire top floor.”

Trying to seem like I was not seriously about to lose my shit, I asked, “Why do you call him Mister Moneybags?”

“I just picture him to be this crabby, money-hungry asshole, I guess. Sounds like a fitting name. Of course, I don’t actually know him.”

“Why do you think that way about him, then?”

“I have my reasons.”

CHAPTER REVEAL ~ Exodus by Kylie Hillman

Coming April 11th

Xander Barrett had it all.
Until it was stolen by the devil.
His life. His lover. His freedom.

A chance encounter secures his release.
But, it comes at a cost–a debt he must settle before he’s allowed to take his revenge.

Luckily, it’s a price he’s willing to pay.

Stripping a man of everything but his pride isn’t smart. It creates a monster that’s bigger and meaner than the original. Satan has spawned his match, and he’s ready to cause an exodus.

This story is the second installment in the Centrifuge Duet, and while it can be read as a standalone, reading Amnesia, Centrifuge Duet #1 first is recommended.

Prologue

I always thought everyone had a conscience. That even the worst type of people had one—they were just adept at ignoring it. However, the past eighteen months have forced me to reassess this.
Why? Because I no longer have a nagging voice in my head or the hollow feeling in my gut when I do something wrong. The two things that I associated with my conscience are gone. Poof. Like a puff of smoke, they up and left me sometime between the first time I was arrested and last night, when I watched a man I didn’t know—a man who’d never done a thing to me—bleed out over his desk after I’d slit his throat.
Nowadays, I don’t believe that many of us possess a conscience. There’s too many people willing to throw their own granny under the bus for a dollar for me to hang on to the idealistic view of the human race that I held for the first thirty-two years of my life. In this current incarnation of the world we inhabit, a conscience is no longer an asset.
It’s a liability.

Chapter 1

Ever wanted to see the love of your life getting fucked six ways to Sunday by the asshole she chose over you?
Nah, me neither.
Unfortunately, I don’t get a say in the matter. Not when each afternoon at precisely three o’clock, I’m hauled out of my cell, dragged down the long, white hallway, and handcuffed to the table in one of the private visitation rooms provided by the prison. The flat-screen TV mounted in the corner of the room is turned on and I get a ringside view of my ex-fiancée getting reamed by her new husband.
I say “reamed”, not because I’m being a prick. I say it because that’s exactly what it is. He drives his cock into her like he’s trying to brand her from the inside. Hard. Fast. And, furious. He’s always furious. There’s a deep rage burning in the gaze that Dr. Jaxon Ray always manages to send straight down the barrel of the camera. If I was prone to flights of fancy—which I’m not—I’d say that he does it deliberately in some sick determination to let me know that he knows how I feel watching them.
Every thrust is a clear message, anyway.
I won. You lost.
She’s mine.
Keys rattle in the door of my cell. They herald the start of another free porn show. Bile rises in my throat, the sickening churning in my gut commencing like clockwork at the thought of what’s to come.
Here we go again. Another epic fucking day in this freakshow that is currently my life.
“Barrett.” A cursory glance in the direction of the man who speaks tells me that the guard is not one I’ve met before.
I ignore him and remain lying on my back on the lumpy mattress, one arm behind my head in an attempt at nonchalant posture while the other is hidden by my side with my fingers curled into a fist ready for whatever this change in guard’s may bring. The flaky grey ceiling above me has two distinct dark shadows on it. One is mine, unmoving and unwilling. The second is the guard. I track the latter black blob moving toward me, the handcuffs he holds jingling ominously with each step he takes.
“Move your ass, Barrett.”
“Fuck you.” My response earns me a boot to the side. I hear the second guard enter my cell, his chuckle of enjoyment giving away his identity. It’s the usual prick who escorts me. The one who likes to wait with me and narrate the carnal joining as it unfolds on the screen. My nostrils flare when pain blooms from the connection of the first guards foot with my ribs. I roll into a ball. My mouth shut—lips sealed through sheer willpower. I’ll swallow my tongue before I give them a reaction.
“I’m not kidding.” The threat precedes a follow-up kick that has me rolling away until my knees hit the wall at the far side of the bed. “Your visitor doesn’t like to be kept waiting. I’d move my ass if I was you. This might be your only chance to get out of here.”
The pain in my body leaves immediately. I struggle to sit up, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed once I’m facing them. Apprehension pumps through my veins when I meet their smug gazes.
“Visitor?” The raspy quality to my voice is less than optimal. Clearing my throat, I try again, this time with some authority in my tone. “What visitor? I don’t have anyone approved.”
The closest guard—Mr. Chatty Porn Lover—answers first. “No shit, Sherlock. Who said anything about her being approved?”
His companion shrugs, then holds the cuffs out to me. “She might not be approved, but I think you’ll want to see her.”
My heart lurches in my chest, skipping a beat before it settles into a frenetic pace that has me sweating like a fat kid at an all-you-can-eat buffet. There’s one question running around my head at a million miles an hour.
Amber’s here?
A glance in the direction of the guards tells me that I won’t get any further answers out of them. I swallow my growing curiosity and the overwhelming desire to knock out the two pricks who separate me from the woman who owns every functioning cell in my body. I know acting on my urgency will only slow the damn process so I force myself to cooperate.
Standing, I hold out my arms with the wrists parallel. He snaps the handcuffs on and then follows the chain that connects them until he’s squatting at my feet. Sharp, efficient movements have the other set of larger steel cuffs locked around my ankles in seconds. Once I’m secured, the guard yanks on the chain that joins my bound hands and feet in a silent command to follow him. I shuffle along, one guard in front of me and one behind, intently watching me like I’m the convicted murderer I’m purported to be.
When we pass the visitor’s room that I’m usually led into, I almost let my curiosity get the better of me and ask where the hell we’re going. Thankfully, answers are provided before I give them the opportunity to shoot me down with sick glee.
The door that leads into the room next to the one I normally occupy is opened by the guard who’s leading me. I stand as tall as I can, shoulders back and head held high, determined to resemble my old self as much as I can when I come face to face with Amber for the first time in almost two years.
It takes a ridiculous amount of resolve to stop the shaking that threatens to take hold of my body as I lift my head to greet my woman. Our eyes meet. I blink furiously, unable to believe what I’m seeing. Playing it cool is no longer an option. Not with the guard behind me blocking any opportunity for escape. Instead, I let my mouth fall open and verbalise the question that’s beating a thunderous cacophony of confusion around my skull.
“Who the fuck are you?”
“Such rudeness is unbecoming from a man in your position.” The woman seated at the table in the middle of the room sniffs, her annoyance with my lack of manners clear. She smooths her skirt over her thighs before settling a satisfied gaze on me. “Considering I’m your new boss and your passport out of this establishment.”

Wife to a Harley riding, boating and fishing, four-wheel driving, quintessential Aussie bloke.

Restarting her childhood hobbies of writing and reading to alleviate the monotony of being sick and housebound, she found her calling and is enjoying life to the max. Tally is a twenty-year-old single mother struggling to finish nursing school. Has she made mistakes in life? Sure, but her daughter isn’t one of them. She works hard, she studies even harder, and she’s only a few weeks away from graduating. She’s living her life the best she knows how when she witnesses a near miss motorcycle accident between a car and a biker. A biker that happens to be the most talked about teacher at her college.

The moment she meets those startling blue, narrowly-escaped-death eyes, she realizes quickly that life as she knows it has changed. No longer will she be content to let life pass her by, even if it puts everything she’s worked so hard for in jeopardy.

***

Tommy is a highly skilled doctor. A teacher. A veteran. A fully-patched member of The Dixie Wardens MC. He’s lonely, but also set in his ways. What will it take for this man to accept that he needs to make some changes in his life? Apparently, it’ll take a guy in a truck, who’s preoccupied with his phone rather than focused on the road, nearly plowing into him on his bike at seventy miles per hour. Oh, and a twenty-something year old nursing student witnessing the entire thing from only a few feet away.

It only takes a second, a single heartbeat in time, as he looks into her worry-filled eyes to realize that he’d give anything for a single night with her. He may lose his job in the process, but after that one incredible night turns into an amazing weekend, he knows it’s worth the risk for the promise of her forever.

I leaned back in my chair, letting my pencil drop onto the couch beside me, and stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

He worked his jaw, his hand coming up to allow his fingers to scratch his beard.

He looked so freakin’ sexy, even doing innocuous things like touching his majestic beard.

It really was majestic…and longer than I remembered.

Was he growing it out? I wonder what it would feel like rubbing against the inside of my thighs?

“That look won’t get you anywhere right now,” he murmured.

I bit my lip.

“I…” I didn’t have anything to say to that.

I really shouldn’t be thinking about it.

Really.

I shouldn’t be thinking about how his cock filled me up. I shouldn’t be thinking about the erection I could now see straining his pants. I shouldn’t be wishing I could take it out and swallow it…

“Stop,” he snapped.

I’d bitten my lip, but my eyes remained on his cock.

And the next thing I knew, there was a two hundred and thirty-pound man on top of me, pinning me to the couch.

I gasped, taken aback at the suddenness.

He used my gasp against me, slamming his mouth to mine as he thrust his tongue into my mouth.

I moaned.

He tasted like chocolate.

I’d seen him eating M&M’s in class when I’d passed his classroom door on the way to my own.

I’d also been insanely jealous of that candy.

I wanted to melt in his mouth. I wanted to be the thing that he enjoyed the taste of.

He thrust his leg in between my thighs, and I parted them without hesitation before wrapping my arms around his shoulders and pulling him even closer to me.

I forgot what I was doing. I forgot where I was. I forgot everything, focusing only on the feel of his body on mine. The taste of his mouth. The smell of his skin.

I read Fear The Beard in one sitting and I FLOVED IT… this series is getting better with each book so I can only imagine what Lani has to come for the other MC guys!

A fabulous cast of character, some drama, a helluva lot of sweet, hot and sexy from our leading man, a heroine who is determined, hard working, dedicated to her little girl and totally taken with the biker that she comes across on the way to class one day and a whole lot of smoking hot bedroom (and other places!) action all add up to a engaging, must read story and another excellent instalment in The Dixie Warden Rejects MC series.

The connection between Tommy and Tally was palpable, they worked so well together – in and out of bed – and Dr. Bone’s obvious adoration of Tallulah was heart melting!

I’ve picked up but still not started The Heroes of the Dixie Wardens series that the Rejects are a spin off of but that’s something I plan on rectifying asap…. if the original series is as good as this one I know I’ll love it!

I rate Fear The Beard a solid 5* recommended read.

He’s only a friend.

Those words had haunted him from the moment Jessie James had heard them muttered from the one girl, above all others, that he thought had his back.

Sixteen years later, he still feels those words like a brand on his soul.

Lucky for him he has a son to take care of, a full-time job that demands every single second of the day, and not a single moment to spare for the likes of a woman that won’t stand up for him when he needs her the most.

He’s only a friend.

The words had slipped out of Ellen’s mouth, and before she could recall them or better yet, explain, Jesse is gone from her life for good, taking her heart with him.

She tries to find her way out of the pit of despair, but not one single person, no matter how much she tries, can fill the void that he left in his wake. Time heals all wounds. Or at least that is how the saying goes. It’s a crock of crap, though.

Sixteen years pass when Jessie and Ellen see each other again without the influence of the town and bad memories surrounding them, and it’s as if not a single day has passed.

Ellen knows the instant that her eyes see her old love that she’s still just as much in love with him today as she was all those years ago.

The problem is that Jesse wants nothing to do with her. Or at least that’s what he keeps telling himself.

“Why the hell are you out here and not in your fucking room doing that?”  I asked my sixteen-year-old son, Linc.
Linc looked up from his homework, and shrugged.
The problem with Linc doing his homework out here meant that he had the TV blaring, his phone on some stupid Vine video, and his pencil tapping a million miles an hour while he hummed to some random song that only he could hear.
He was also nearly naked.  Had been for the majority of his life.
He ignored me as if I hadn’t said a word.
“Seriously,” I said to him. “What makes you think it’s okay to sit here in your underwear with the fuckin’ front window wide ass open?  There are people in this neighborhood that I’d rather not egg our shit. Not to mention you don’t pay the fuckin’ electric bill and it’s cold as fuck out.”
Linc snorted.
“They’d have to be able to walk close to our cars, and since most of them are old geezers, I don’t see that happening.” He countered. “What’s got up your ass?”
I grunted, walking to the kitchen to grab a beer.  It’d been a long fucking day, and I had to go back to work and do it all over again tomorrow.
I was a welder for a pipeline, and my job was exhaustingly hard work that I fucking loved.  I made a whack, and payed for my bills, but to do that I had to work long hours.  Nearly eighty hours a week.
“Someone called for you today. A woman.”
“What was her name?”  I asked, scanning the contents of the refrigerator for something to eat. “Did you eat all the leftover pizza?”
Linc and I had pizza a lot.  Anything that was fast, and came out of a box, was our go-to menu item seeing as neither one of us really knew how to cook. Lunchables. Macaroni. Hamburger Helper when we were feeling adventurous.
“Ellen?”  Linc guessed.  “I wrote it down on the pad next to the phone.
The name ‘Ellen’ wasn’t common, but it was still impossible for a girl from my past—almost fourteen years ago to be exact—to come back and haunt me some two thousand odd miles away from where I first met her.
“What did she want?”  I asked. “And you never answered me on the pizza.”
“That was gone last night about three in the morning.”  Linc chuckled unrepentantly.  “And I wrote it all down on the note.”
I closed the fridge and moved across the small space to the counter next to the landline that I wasn’t sure why we still had, and stared at the pad of paper with two words on it.
Club party.
“Can I go?”
I looked up to find Linc, the boy that was spitting image of me.
Six feet one, and likely to grow even more since the pediatrician said he’d likely reach my height if not more.  Jet black hair with a slight wave to it, exactly like mine.
Hell, he even had a beard, exactly like me.  Though, his was much more trimmed and kempt due to the school he was attending informing him if it wasn’t done just so, he’d have to shave it or leave the school.
We’d had to fight for the beard, so if he wanted to keep it, he’d damn well follow their rules or I’d make him shave it off myself.
His body mass was the only thing he didn’t have yet that resembled me. He was much skinnier, and definitely on the verge of getting some bulk, just like I had been at seventeen. But he didn’t have it yet. He was still in that in between stage that showed the promise of what he might one day be.
Me, I was six foot four, two hundred and fifty pounds of solid muscle, and had a six pack that was derived from days and days of hard work and sweat on the pipeline. I had a beard that was on the verge of being too bushy, but I’d literally lost all desire to impress anyone a long fucking time ago.
I was me.  I wasn’t going to change, even though some would like me to.
“I’ll have to ask if it’s kid friendly…” I laughed when my son gave me a face that clearly said what he thought about me saying ‘kid friendly.’
My kid wasn’t a kid. He couldn’t be when he was raised by me.
I’d done my best, but I’d been more like a brother than a parent. We were seventeen years apart in age, and there wasn’t a day that went by that I did the whole parenting thing correctly.
He had to grow up faster than most. By the age of ten, I was leaving him at home for extended periods of time because I’d been switched to a different shift that equaled me not getting home from work until a little after nine o’clock.
By the age of twelve, he was spending almost the entire night alone every other day because my shifts were switched again.
By fifteen, we didn’t even pass each other for the entire day at times.
Now, at sixteen, I had a better paying position. One that equaled me working days, though they were long and just as tiring—if not more tiring—as my previous job.  Being peoples’ boss was the pits.  Dealing with peoples’ bullshit was even worse.
“You took me to the last one.”
I grinned.  “That’s right. I did.”
“I can’t believe you’re prospecting. I’m so fuckin’ excited.”
I just shook my head.
My kid rolled his eyes at me and got up, walking toward me with a paper in his hand.  “Read this and make sure it looks good.”
I grabbed the paper and read it, my heart tightening slightly when I read the words on the paper.
“You think I’m a superhero?” I asked quietly, my eyes flicking up to my son’s where he was leaning against the wall.
Linc looked at me, really looked at me, and nodded.
“Yeah, dad. I think you’re a fucking superhero.” He grated out. “Otherwise I wouldn’t be here right now, now would I? My paper was on someone who inspires me to be a better person. That’s you, bitch.”
I grabbed my man-child into a headlock and brought him in close to me, then pressed a kiss to the top of his head before taking him down to the ground and tickling him like I used to do when he was six.
“Get out of here, kid. Let me read. You get your shit picked up outside or it’ll get stolen.”
My kid left, luckily putting pants on before he walked outside to pick up his football gear, leaving me to read a paper that was enough to bring a grown man to tears.
