“You have a customer. First booth.” Grace tipped her head toward the front of the restaurant. ““And he’s a cute one. Single, too,” Grace said with a wink.

“So this is what small-town living is like? You know everyone?”

She nodded. “And everyone gets to know you. Now shoo.” She waggled her fingers, indicating Juliette should head up front and serve her customer.

She put a smile on her face and strode toward the first table, stopping short when she came upon him.

He had thick, brown wavy hair, with a strong jaw and hazel eyes, and Grace hadn’t done him justice calling him cute. He was downright gorgeous. A navy tee shirt accented his muscular frame. He had to work out, given the flex and pull of his biceps as he picked up a glass of water and took a long sip.

The men she knew in New York were flimsy compared to this hunky specimen. They wore suits their bodies didn’t fill out and had weak facial profiles. This guy was everything she didn’t know to want, but she was certain he’d be in her dreams from now on.

She swallowed hard and approached, gripping the coffeepot in her hand. “Good morning.”

He looked up and his eyes locked on hers. His mossy-green-brown gaze bored into hers and held on so long the stare felt like a warm caress.

“Good morning to you, pretty lady.”

At his gruff words, a warm flush rose to her cheeks. “Coffee?” she asked, lifting the carafe, her hand suddenly trembling.

“Sure. Thank you.”

She somehow managed to pour the liquid without spilling, but she filled the coffee too high and it seeped over the top, leaking first on the table and then onto his lap.

He jerked as the hot liquid hit his pants.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry.” She put the carafe down with a clatter, picked up the nearest napkin, and began blotting his shirt and his lap, pressing down to soak up the liquid, only to come into contact with his hard, thick– “Oh!” She yanked her hand back, further mortified.

“You could keep going,” he said, eyes twinkling with laughter.

She wanted to crawl beneath the nearest table and stay there. “I’m so sorry. Did it burn you?” she asked, her cheeks flaming.

“No. It must have been cooler than you realized. I’m fine. Really.”

“Is everything okay over here?” Grace asked, walking over, obviously concerned.

Juliette stepped up, taking responsibility. “I–“

“Just a little accident,” the man said. “It’s no big deal.”

A customer called Grace’s name and she walked away, the incident forgotten. Juliette wished she could put it behind her as easily.

“How about we introduce ourselves, considering you had your hand on my–“

“Juliette,” she said quickly, before he could finish his sentence. “Juliette Collins.”

“Braden Clark,” he said with a knowing grin that made her weak in the knees.

The man’s impact was potent.

“Nice to meet you, Juliette.”

“Same,” she murmured. “Now can I get you a fresh cup of coffee?”

“That would be great.”

She gently picked up the overflowed cup and headed for the kitchen, returning to him with an empty mug and a towel to clean the table. A few careful minutes of serving later, he had his coffee and she was back to her duties, feeling his gaze on her as she worked. His name is Braden Clark and he’s a regular.”

Juliette picked up the coffee carafe. “I’ve got it.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I’ve really enjoyed the previous books in Carly Phillips Rosewood Bay series and Freed was no exception.

Juliette has been manipulated and lied to by her father all of her life so when she discovers that she’s actually not an only child and finds the strength to leave the smothering, lonely life in the city it’s great watching her flourish and stand on her own two feet.

Braden is a good guy. Hard working with his own business that he took over when his dad got sick and it’s through this that he is introduced to Juliette. What starts out as a surveillance job quickly turns into something more for both of them – though how will the girl he’s possibly falling for react when she finds out why he approached her in the first place (even though his reasons for not fessing up are sad and not for his own benefit)??

This pair were really good together. He gave her the space she needed to grow while being there to catch her. In return, Juliette was the support that Braden had never had and didn’t fully realise he even needed.

I love catching up with previous characters and seeing how they are doing. I’m looking forward to more from Ms Phillips and Rosewood Bay.

My rating for the third book in the series – 4.5*

Timothy stared out of his large windows at the darkening sky. The city was never more beautiful than it was right now as the sun sank lower leaving trails of orange, yellow, and red in its wake.

City lights were just beginning to come on and the combination of them and the sunset as the last rays glinted against the white blanket of snow was pure magic.

He scoffed at the thought, nothing good came from magic. Only death and despair. He drank down the rest of the whiskey in his glass and grabbed his jacket off the chair. He never smoked in his office, but damn he could use a cigar now.

Since everyone had gone home for the evening except for Ashton who was in his office watching the security feeds, the building would be silent which was something he dreaded each night.

He had spent a lot of years in the silence, and it was deafening.

Timothy stepped out into the alley behind his building and clipped the end of the cigar he had pulled from his office humidor. He held it up to his nose and breathed in the sweet smell before lighting it.

The darkness enveloped him as he leaned against the door and puffed on his cigar. There was nothing in the world like the taste of a fine cigar as the tobacco seeped into your system.

The calming effect it had on him was one he’d failed to find anywhere else. The chill in the air had the puffs coming out even more defined than usual, and Timothy was enthralled by them as they faded from view.

It wasn’t until he was half done with his cigar that he saw the shadow lurking in the corner.

“Can I help you?” he asked easily, and the man stepped from the dark. Timothy straightened when he saw the gun in his hand. “No need for that, tell me what you want, and I’ll be sure you get it.” Timothy wasn’t overly worried; the man couldn’t actually kill him. But damn, gunshots hurt like hell. He should know since he’d been at the receiving end of one too many times.

The man stepped close enough Timothy was able to see the glint of amusement in his eye. Timothy had only ever seen that madness once before, and that man had been responsible for two innocent deaths and the root reason as to why he was trapped.

His back straightened, and he gave the man before him his full attention. “What is it you want?” he asked again.

“I want to see you bleed,” the man said with a smile and pulled the trigger.

It was the pain that hit him first, that sharp tearing of skin and flesh as the bullet forced its way into his body. He fell to the ground, cigar falling next to him, and clutched his abdomen. No matter how many times he’d been shot, stabbed, punched, or even on occasion-burned—over the years, the pain was not something he ever got used to.

The coldness came next and was something Timothy had not been prepared for. His wounds, no matter how severe, had always healed themselves before the numbing fingers of death gripped him as they were now. How was this possible? He thought to himself. What was happening to him? He tried his best to move but found his body had gone completely numb as he lay there in the pool of his own blood.

And as his attacker knelt next to him, he felt for the first time, as if he wouldn’t survive the night.

“Hi,” I tell the receptionist. “I’m here for the intern program?”

The receptionist doesn’t answer at first. She’s too busy staring off at the far corner of the lobby. I follow her gaze, turning to see two men in deep conversation. One, the older one, looks vaguely familiar. The younger one looks angry, and a lot like the older man, and also… well. I can tell why the receptionist is distracted. Because damn, that man is built.

He has to be, what, 6’4”, 6’5”? And all lean muscle, too. Not body-builder huge, but the sort of guy who could unexpectedly lift you single-handedly and drag you in a fireman’s carry to the nearest bed. With those sharp biceps of his, the cut jawline and razor cheekbones over his perfect bow lips, I could imagine a thing or two to do in bed with him.

Just then, as though sensing my gaze—or maybe the receptionist’s—he turns. I catch a glimpse of dark, sharp eyes. The kind of eyes that could pin you in place with one glance, while he went to work spreading your legs open, bending you over a desk…

My cheeks go hot, and I whip around. Somewhere behind me, I catch a distant shout, and then a door slams. Only then does the receptionist tear her eyes away, back to me. She smiles once, apologetically.

“Just spying on the family drama,” she says with a laugh and a little flutter of a sigh that doesn’t convince me. Sure. Drama. That’s why you were eying Mr. Hunky over there like a fresh cut of steak. “That’s Mr. Quint and his son, Jasper,” she clarifies, in response to my blank stare.

Oh. My eyes widen. That’s why the older man looked familiar. Antoine Quint—I’ve seen his photo in about a thousand magazines, usually in those Magnate of the Year type features, but occasionally in the Rich Older Men (And Their Hot Wives) type categories too. With a father like that, and a mother like the bombshell I’ve seen pictured on Antoine’s arm at red carpet photo shoots, it’s no wonder his son—Jasper—is so distracting.
