In this erotically-charged novella, Lisa Brady Delaney hires her first crush, Tyce Branton, mechanic to the stars, to prepare her classic cars for auction. When they knew each other years ago, Lisa had to make a break to get out of her down-on-her-luck, trailer park life. That break included leaving Tyce in her rear-view mirror.

But now, Lisa needs Tyce to fulfill a promise and every woman needs a good mechanic. Lisa quickly learns Tyce is a hands-on man: in the garage and in the bedroom.

In a story where assumptions prove wrong, Tyce learns that Lisa is now a strong, independent woman who’s left her trailer park existence in the past. Can he put his old anger and humiliation behind him long enough to give this brand-new Lisa a chance?

Tyce Branton wiped his hands on a rag and settled against the hood of the Cadillac coupe. She had great lines, long and lean, with headlights that could stall a man’s heart. Lines that could make a man’s hands itch.

Maybe it wasn’t the car that revved him up after all. Maybe it was the woman closing the back kitchen door of her Tudor mansion. Like the Caddy, her color was cream-and-white blonde while the sweep of her long-lined midsection gave her the look of speed, grace, and agility.

She was possessed of a body a man could drive and drive and drive.

Come to Papa.

And she did.

Straight across the courtyard she came. Her long legs eating the ground, hair flying back just enough to show the pink lobes of her ears, the Widow Delaney approached the middle bay of the three-car garage where Tyce stood.

Much younger than even rumor had it, she was a ripe beauty, made for a man to hold on to. Stretch out over. Sink into. As he drank in the sight of her purposeful approach, Tyce recognized a familiar swing to her walk. The set of her shoulders and the light, graceful flow of her hands by her thighs reminded him of someone.

He straightened immediately, alert to an inner rhythm he hadn’t felt in years. As her sandals hit the cobblestones, he felt an answering tattoo in his chest and farther south.

It was as if he’d seen her walk toward him thousands of times.

But this woman was no recent acquaintance. He’d never even met the deceased husband. So where and when had he met her?

The sandals she wore had slim straps at the ankles. Thin, elegant ankles. Rhinestones glittered on the toe straps. Her legs were smooth and shiny like those of a pampered mistress. Arms loose, her gait was easy but determined. Her breasts were high, firm, probably fake, while her head was set in a haughty way that said she was very much the lady of the manor.

Tilted in just that way, her chin spoke of determination and pride.

Word was she’d demanded his personal attention. His hands and no one else’s would do. This bit of information came straight from the law firm that hired him. No one else’s hands but his. The lawyer had been adamant. Still, if he’d known this woman before, he couldn’t place her, didn’t know how she’d come to ask for him.

But he was about to find out.

To cover his study he struck a match, held it to the cigarette in his mouth, and kept one eye on the Widow Delaney. From what he’d heard, keeping an eye on the widow was the smartest thing a man could do. The old guy she’d married had been taken for a ride.

He flicked the spent match away, drew on the smoke, and watched as she stuttered to a stall about five feet away.

“Tyce Branton.” Her voice, husky and soft, gave him his answer.

His belly dropped, his heart slipped a gear.

“Lisa Brady.” He said her name as a bald statement, devoid of the shock he felt.

“It’s Lisa Delaney now.” After all these years, Lisa Brady was where she wanted to be: which was as far away from where she started as a woman could get.

An erotic romance novella…

A jilted bride…a sexy sea captain…love at first touch

In this companion book to my previous release Body Work, Tyce’s cousin Teri, arrives in the sultry Caribbean for her honeymoon…alone! After being jilted at the altar, Teri’s self-confidence his shattered but her heart is not as broken as she might expect.

At the dock Teri Branton finds sexy sea captain Jared MacKay aboard the honeymoon charter boat she hired. After being ordered to remove her stilettoes, she wonders how to teach this pirate a lesson. But the flare in his eyes answers the one she feels burning inside.

At first sight, Jared dislikes Teri’s New York attitude and 6 inch stilettos, while Teri considers the sea captain a lazy, sexy, interesting way to get her runaway groom out of her system.

Seven days at sea is all she’s got and she’s determined to have the best week she can.

But Jared doesn’t count on his family lore coming true: love at first touch. The snap, sizzle and burn of touching Teri turns his world upside down and his heart inside out.

“Mr. MacKay?” Teri Branton asked pleased at how clear her voice sounded. No one would know from her voice how vicious her day had been. The man on the SandJack twitched as if she’d woken him. She probably had. He had the insolent look of a man used to doing a lot of nothing. His feet were propped against the railing, giving her a worm’s eye view up the back side of his khaki shorts. Strong lean legs, tanned beyond healthy, big bare feet with strong toes and callused soles.

He slid his ball cap to the back of his head, revealing a powerful face. Powerful because his lean nose and slashing thin lips were too cutting to be handsome. But they held her attention just the same. Then he opened his eyes and focused on her.

Cut by the laser blue that stared back at her, Teri’s heart fluttered at the intensity and she took a single step back. Tired of being intimidated, she caught herself before taking another.

“You are the captain of the SandJack?” she asked.

“Take off your shoes.” His voice had a deep timbre that stroked her insides from breastbone to toes, so she wasn’t sure what she’d heard.

“Excuse me?”

“Those shoes,” he tilted his chin down to indicate her feet. “Take them off.”

A fierce light from his gaze burned into hers as he waited.

And then she knew. He wasn’t the captain of this vessel. He was a pirate, a rogue, a brigand. He was danger. And excitement.

A thrill chased down her belly.

She looked at her feet and saw incongruous white satin stilettos with a delicate spray of seed pearls trailing the outside edge.

Her wedding shoes.

She was still in them.

Odd that she’d forgotten to change. When she’d found them after a hunt through every store in Manhattan, a perfect fit, she’d paid a fortune for them. They’d meant a lot to her at the time. Now, they just looked sad.

Stepping wide, she saw the pirate follow her movement, then track the shape of her legs up from her feet to her knees and higher.

Interesting.

He was checking her out. Awareness of her own power gripped her as she numbly regarded her shoes and thought about the pirate’s interest.

The intensity she’d given to the hunt for these perfect shoes was gone as surely as smoke in the wind. With as much substance. It was stupid how her wedding had taken over her life, her every waking moment. Her back felt tired from these shoes, her toes ached from every pair of stilettos she owned. The fatigue seeped from her pinched toes, up her calves and into her lower spine.

She wanted to sag with the weight of her day, but then in her peripheral vision, she saw the pirate move his beer to his lips. He took a sip from the bottle, waiting with obvious patience for her to do whatever it was she was planning to do with the shoes.

She looked at him again and saw the hot blue of his eyes, the long lean length of his legs, the strength in his hands. Then she considered the very private week ahead of her.

She’d decided to spend the time eating too much, drinking too much and mulling her life. But now, this pirate presented another opportunity. An exciting opportunity for overindulgence of a different kind.

EXCERPT #1

“These come in various colors,” she said, holding up the ropes, “but I’m partial to black.” She threaded one of the ropes over her hand and up her arm past her elbow. The material opened up into the mesh he was familiar with.“Me too,” he said around a thundering heart. “Although white’s nice, too. Virginal.”“Is that what you’d like Taye? A virgin?” She pulled the fishnet down her arm again, slowly, like a stripper removing a long silk glove.

The image was hot, the real woman in front of him hotter.

“Because I could do that for you,” her voice went husky and offered exactly what he’d come over here to get. “Be virginal, I mean.”

EXCERPT #2

Taye climbed out of his SUV and headed to the door of his town house, briefcase in hand. He bent and picked up a package left on his front step. Wrapped in cozy brown cords, he had a great butt, even from this distance, and Kat found several ways a day to see it. From her back upstairs window she’d watch him put out bird seed. Through his tiny kitchen window she’d catch glimpses of him making dinner.

“He’s not a nerd,” Kat said in his defense. “I’m willing to bet under that tweed jacket is a lot of man.”

“You think?” Celia assessed him with her man-hungry eyes.

Kat shifted. A second mistake. Taye’s physique was not up for discussion, not with Celia. She was a shark when it came to getting what she wanted.

Synopsis:

More often than not, Clint Mason has his foot firmly wedged in his mouth, which tends to get him in plenty of hot water with the ladies. Although his laid back good ole’ Southern charm does not fly far with the female population of Cedar Tree, the big burly contractor hides his dark side well.

The only one Beth Franklin allows herself to rely on is Beth, and so far that has served her well. Just when her son disappears after dropping his little guy off on her doorstep, her life seems to spiral out of control. For the first time ever, fearing for his safety, the fiercely independent waitress is forced to be on the receiving end of a helping hand. That’s not easy for her, especially since the shovel-sized hand belongs to a man whose approach has run hot and cold the last year, leaving her feeling off balance. With a steady and commanding force, he exposes her softer side, while doing everything he can to keep her and those close to her safe.

Excerpt:

EXCERPT for reading:

“A gentleman would’ve offered to do that for you, but when you bend over with that fine ass on display, I suddenly don’t feel so gentlemanly anymore.”
His breath tickles my ear and my body freezes in the spot. Mortification and arousal do battle for supremacy while I struggle for a smart come back. All I manage is an illiterate grunt, before slipping around the trunk of the car, keeping my head down to hide the telltale blush. His low chuckle follows me all the way into the driver’s seat, and that’s where my indignant self comes alive.
“What’s with you?” I blurt out the minute his fine ass hits the seat beside me. “For days, no, make that weeks since you’ve woken up, you’ve been mostly a grumpy ass. And now suddenly you’re going all sexy and shit. The hot and cold routine is giving me hot flashes,” I mumbled the last, but apparently he hears because the car fills with the best sound I’ve heard in months—Clint throwing his head back and laughing without restrictions. I can’t help but look over and take in the strong column of his throat and the strong white teeth showing between his lips. Fuck, those lips.
“Sexy and shit?” I lift my eyes from his mouth and find him looking at me with one eyebrow raised in question.
“Seriously? That’s what sticks from all I said?”
“Well, no. The hot flashes made an impression too.” He winks. He bloody winks.

“I really appreciate it, but you don’t have to give it to me for free,” Clare’s brow furrowed as she took the membership card from the spunky redhead.
“Oh, please, girl. I used to work busing tables at O’Leary’s Pub when I was in high school. Is Cian still in charge over there?” She smiled back as she continued putting Clare’s information into the gym’s computer system.
“Yeah, he’s my supervisor.” Clare nodded at the woman, slightly mesmerized by how piercing and blue her eyes were in contrast to the bright red wavy hair that flowed down most of her back.
“Then believe me, these self-defense classes can be written off as a work expense on next year’s taxes.” Both women snickered. Clare leaned against the counter, enjoying the interaction, since she hadn’t made any friends around her age in the three weeks she had lived here. Clare felt a pang of regret slice through her as she wished that an irritating boss was the only reason she needed self-defense classes.
“I’m Casey Kavanagh, by the way.” The redhead reached out her hand to Clare, who accepted it happily.
“Clare—well, I guess you already know that.” Clare pointed toward the driver’s license that Casey was still holding. Casey just smirked and waved her hand nonchalantly.
“So—Kavanagh? You’re part of the family who owns this place?” Clare tried not to sound like she was prying, but she was curious. She’d heard that name all over town since she got here.
“Yeah, my uncle owns it. Started it up back in the late seventies. It’s been remodeled lately, but we definitely still have the old-school reputation.”
“Oh.” Clare nodded, not sure what that meant or what to say.
“Here, you can have this back. I think I have everything in here now.” Casey handed her the license. “The thirty-day trial membership begins today, and then we can talk about different types of plans after you’ve had a chance to try out our various amenities and classes.”
“Thanks. Do you think I could have a peek around? See where the locker rooms are and stuff like that?” Clare tucked her driver’s license back into her wallet along with the new membership card, then stuffed the wallet into the small brown purse that was slung over her shoulder.
“Hell, yeah! Come on, let me give you a tour. Welcome—officially, this time—to Legends!” Casey popped out from around the back of the counter, motioning for her to follow.
Clare watched the bouncy, energetic woman in amusement as she followed her, feeling slightly overdressed in her knee-length red dress and thigh-high black boots, compared to Casey’s black yoga pants and neon-green long-sleeved tee.
“Okay, so here are the locker rooms. Men over there, women right here.” Casey started to point toward various doors they passed as the hallway opened up into a large room with an open floor plan.
“The entire far side of the room is pretty much for the fighters, not really anything but testosterone and ball sweat over there.” Casey slid her arm around Clare’s elbow to pull her along.
Clare giggled at Casey’s remarks and took in the view of dozens of men on weight-lifting machines, standing in front of weight benches, and in the rings. She had to agree, there was definitely a lot of testosterone in here.
“But over here is where things are a bit less noisy.” Casey led Clare to a side hall that opened into several small classrooms. A few of the rooms were filled with people doing group exercises; Clare recognized a yoga class and a spinning class.
“All the classrooms are walled in by windows, but the glass is so thick that you can’t hear all the noise from the rings.” Casey indicated an empty classroom that was at the back wall of the gym.
The door they entered through was set in a wall of all glass, just like the back wall of the room that gave them a view of the street. Clare strode toward the back wall, loving the openness and the view of pedestrians passing by.
“Yeah, that’s my favorite part, too,” Casey said.
“What, people watching?”
“Of course! People are weird, which is fun,” Casey quipped, joining her at the window as they stood side by side.
“See, there’s an example of weird right there.” Casey pointed at a behemoth of a man crouching on the sidewalk with a large dog next to him.
“That’s my cousin, Rory, but he’s more like a brother. He works here sometimes, used to be a fighter but got hurt in the championships last year. Almost couldn’t walk again since his leg pretty much split in two. A year later, not only is he walking, but there he is crouched down, feeding a damn street dog.”
Clare watched more closely, and now she noticed the second dog. In front of both the man and the larger dog beside him was a smaller, frail-looking pup. It couldn’t be more than twenty pounds, although it seemed like it should be much bigger. The dog’s ribs were poking out of its side as Casey’s cousin slowly fed him a sandwich. He was careful to hold his hand out flat and she could see his lips moving from his profile, realizing he was probably coaxing the dog to accept the food.
“I think that’s sweet. I was studying to be a vet before I moved here.” Clare’s voice was soft as she admired the man’s kindness toward the stray.
The man stood and stretched a bit, opening up the other half of a bagged sandwich and then settling himself on the curb by the thin dog, who seemed more trusting of him now. In his new position, Clare could see more of his face and she realized that it was the same burly yet handsome man she had flirted with at O’Leary’s last night.
Of course, that was before he had broken her boss’s nose.
She felt a stirring in her abdomen as she watched him, her mouth slightly parting. The brown pup cautiously took a few steps to him, then sat and placed his head in Rory’s lap. Clare felt a glow as her heart warmed at the sight.
“I’m so not an animal person, but Rory would help a goddamn rat if he found one. That bigger dog there is his shadow, Ace. Barely ever see the two of them apart.” Casey stepped away from the window.
Clare hesitated, watching Rory and Ace for a moment longer, then pulled herself away to go follow her new friend. It had been a while since she had thought about her previous career aspirations, and a wave of sadness passed over her as she thought of the different trajectory of her life now. Maybe now that she was starting over, she could go back to school, she found herself hoping.

“Cold Creek Grill. How may I help you?” She answered the phone as if her day was right as rain. She was a business woman, first and foremost.
“I need a reservation for tonight,” a gravelly voice barked into the phone. The caller was either on a cell phone with a bad connection or had a mouth full of marbles.
“Of course sir, what time are you looking for?”
“Seven,” he said impatiently and Amanda pictured him running to catch a subway.
“Let me make sure I have that available,” she told him, trying to buy time while she booted up the computer at the podium a few feet away. She moved the phone to the other side of her head, forgetting it was a war zone and her hair crackled near her ear.
“Trust me, sweetheart, you have a table available.”
“Sir?” She didn’t know what to be more offended by, his use of the word sweetheart or the underlying threat that she better be able to seat him. And she determined he was just some arrogant blowhard who was sitting with his feet up on his desk overlooking the water and a fat stogy in his mouth.
“A superstar is having dinner at your restaurant; you don’t want to make him wait.”
“All of our guests at the Cold Creek are VIPs Mr…?”
“Maybe I should speak to the owner?” he cut her off and she thought she heard more spit squish out of the end of his cigar.
“I am the owner. My name is Amanda Cole. To whom do I have the pleasure of speaking?”
“Don’t seat us someplace high traffic like near the front. He’s not there to be an advertisement. You’ll get your photo op.”
It sounded so scathing, like she was some sort of a bistro whore looking to make a buck, as if she would be interested in taking a picture with him in the first place. Supreme Court justices and past presidents dined at the Cold Creek without incident. “Mr. What-ever-your-name-is, I’m not only concerned for the comfort of our guests, but the safety of my staff. And we have had some high profile guests in the past. Several are regulars.”
“Yeah, yeah, I heard that. That’s why I’m calling. But lady, you never had anyone this big,” he said with an air of superiority that was nothing short of skin crawling. At least he had upgraded her to lady.
If he wasn’t being such a total jack-ass, she might have taken him more seriously. “Would you like to tell me who he is, so that I might inform security?” she said with overt sarcasm. He could either take being spoken to in kind, or he would start to ream her out and she would hang up on him and he could dine elsewhere, bad business or not.
There was a pause and she thought he may have hung up on her first. But then he said, “No. Better you don’t know till he gets there. Someone tips off TMZ and the night’s a bust. And he brings his own security”
“Will they be joining you for dinner?”
His laugh was particularly smarmy. “They’re not paid to eat.”
So he wasn’t only rude, he was also a tyrant. “That’s fine, sir, they can stand guard with mine.” Only hers were imaginary. She no longer cared if the computer was ready. It was a Weds, they were rarely fully booked, and this man and his famous guest seemed intent on dining there. He was probably going to be more aggravation than anything else, even if he was only half as self-important as his representative. “You’re all set, dinner for two at seven. Would you like to leave me a name or is there a code word or what?”
There was another pause, and once again Amanda was given the false hope that he may have hung up and saved her from a night of inconvenient distractions at the very least. But then she heard him on the other end, it sounded like a snort.
“You’re spunky, kid,” he told her. “Name under Alan Shaw. I’ll be there at 6:50. I dont like to wait either. And make sure there are good steaks on hand, he’s a meat-eater.”

I lick my lips and draw a heavy breath through my nose. A bead of sweat clings to his temple, and I wipe it away, then run my fingers through his hair. His mouth is open, his breathing shallow. He moves one arm out from under me, and his fingertips trail from my shoulder down to the back of my hand. I move mine from his cheek to the coarse stubble of his jaw. Oliver Reeves is going to kiss me again, this time on a summer afternoon, and I wonder how life will ever be the same.

I trace his lips with my thumb. They’re full and soft. We meet in the air between, his lips fitting around mine in a light, sweet kiss. I hold his head close. His lips move in lazy indulgence, unhurried in their pursuit to pluck every drop of pleasure from mine.

I open my mouth a fraction and run the tip of my tongue across his bottom lip. I don’t know what possesses me to do it. I don’t know anything right now. Oliver presses me into the grass and dirt and fits his hand around the curve of my hip. He slants his mouth across mine, and I let him taste me. His breathing isn’t shallow anymore. It’s labored and noisy against my cheek.

My hand runs down his back. He always looks so calm, so cool, but I can feel the perspiration beneath his shirt. There’s a satisfaction knowing it wasn’t the heat that finally got to him, but me. My lips. My hips and short dress and the bare leg he’s stroking with strong fingers.

Our kisses become faster, needier. I hold his face in both hands as he touches every exposed part of me. His fingers skim the cotton over my ribs, and I move against him, desperate for the feel of his hand on my breast. He cups me there, groaning quietly against my mouth.

He drags his lips from mine; his forehead drops against my neck. But he doesn’t remove his hand or take his weight from me. I arch back, glimpsing dust in a ray of yellow sunlight behind us. His shoulders move beneath my hands as he breathes in deeply. I bring my eyes back to his and see that they’re full of need.

He doesn’t ask, and I don’t say a word. We stand and walk hand in hand, out of the cemetery and back on the gravel path, the one that leads to my car. I reach for the driver’s-side door when we get there, but he pulls me away, back to him, and kisses me slowly. When we part, and the air conditioning is again crisp and cool on our skin, we drive to the hotel in silence. There are no words for this, for what each of us needs.

The truth is, our paths parted a long time ago. Now he’s looking behind for something he’s lost, and I’m running ahead, trying to find something I’ve never had. It feels like we’ve collided—run into each other at the place between what could’ve been and what can be. I don’t know how it will affect what we’re each searching for, but I’ve always loved him, and he came back for me. It’s enough for now.

“Rule Number One, Ms. Turner. Your eyes belong to me. That means glasses off when I say and you never try to hide from something by looking away.”

What was she supposed to say to that? No? Sorry? Screw you? “Edward…”

“Nah, nah, nah,” he stated firmly. “I’m not finished.”

Was she in some sort of alternate reality? What was happening here? Good lord, she was butt ass naked while he was fully dressed and on his knees. Not only that, he was laying out some rules that ordinarily would have made her laugh in his face

“I want you to stand there and not be shy about letting me see your beautiful body.”

Her cheeks definitely felt like they were warming up. He crossed his arms again and lay on the stern Alpha thing kinda thick.

“And so you don’t misunderstand…your pleasure is priority one. Don’t hide it from me because you’re embarrassed. I want you to be swollen with desire and dripping wet before we touch. Consider that Rule Number Two.”

She had a hard time breathing for a second. Why was everything he said and did so perfect?

His eyes were hard with desire. A desire she felt drawn to—as if satisfying his lust was what she was made for. The notion shook her quite a bit. This was serious stuff going on.

“Rule Number Three—and probably the most important.”

Paige couldn’t help the reflexive squeeze her thighs did at the sultry sound in his voice. Let the dripping commence.

Yet again he didn’t react or say anything close to what she expected. Edward was his own man and nothing about him even remotely resembled what she’d known before.

The serious but very sexy man-in-control tone softened and he rose up on his knees and reached for her, bringing Paige close as his face moved within inches of her breasts.

“You’re in complete control, babe. Nothing happens without your consent.” He said this as both hands slid slowly over her butt until he gripped the backs of her thighs and she could feel his warm breath teasing her already peaked nipples.

“Understand?”

She sure as hell did understand. Dipping a shoulder she sent a puckered nipple straight for his mouth, rubbing it on his lips until he grunted his approval and lightly kissed the tip, following up with a hearty lick that almost buckled her knees.

The delight in Edward’s soft chuckle echoed in her head and danced along her nerve endings. “Now that’s what I’m talking about, babe.”

~Sophie~

It had been two weeks since I’d unceremoniously shown up at Brad’s place and broken down like a weak, pathetic mess after asking him to teach me how to defend myself.

Every day since, he’d been teaching me what I’d asked. He was a good teacher. He was good at giving easy-to-follow instructions. He knew how to work up to complicated moves well and he was unbelievably patient.

Until right now.

“You know this,” he chastised me.

He had me pinned to the floor in his living room and I was thrashing about beneath him like an idiot. I didn’t know where the hell my head was at. Actually, I did, but…I couldn’t risk going there.

“Hook my wrist and grab behind my elbow with your other hand. Pull my arm into your chest. Then, use your foot to trap mine, as well as my leg. That’s when you lift your hips and turn hard to regain the dominant position,” he instructed me.

“Okay!” I hissed.

“So, do it. Christ, Soph! You know this. You’ve done it countless times.”

“I know.”

“Yeah? So, what the hell’s the issue now?”

I stopped struggling and collapsed back onto the ground, defeated. “I’m a little distracted, okay?”

“By what?” he fumed, pushing off me and climbing to his feet.

“You.”

“Me?” he asked, not getting it.

“You’re hard. Your…thing was…distracting me.”

He grunted irritably and adjusted his sweatpants. “It’s those fucking shorts.”

“What?” I demanded, getting to my feet, too.

He pointed at my black spandex shorts. “They barely cover your ass and they’re so fucking tight. And that…neon sports bra…it’s not helping the situation.”

“I get too hot in sweats and a hoodie.”

“Fine. I’ll turn up the air conditioning then.”

“You’re being ridiculous,” I said, stomping over to him.

He glowered down at me. “Am I? My dick sure doesn’t think so.” He grabbed his erection through his pants–actually grabbed it, right in front of me.

I quickly averted my eyes. “You need to work on your self-control.”

He stepped into me then, his body pushing against mine. “For the last two weeks, I’ve had you writhing in my arms, dressed in next to nothing and I haven’t laid a hand on you in a sexual way. And you have the nerve to tell me that I don’t have self-control, woman?”

“I’m not a brunette with huge tits, so you shouldn’t have a problem at all.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I saw her. The woman doing the walk of shame from here a few weeks back.”

He seemed surprised that I knew for a few seconds, before quickly brushing it off. He stepped back and turned away. “Let’s take a break. I need some water anyway.”

“I guess that’s the end of that conversation then,” I muttered under my breath, as I followed him into the kitchen area.

He spun around suddenly, catching me off guard. “What conversation? You saw a woman leaving my place. Yeah, I fucked her. And?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “And…nothing.”

“Really? You’re sure? Cuz, from where I’m standing, it sounds like you’re jealous.”

I scoffed. “Do you ever get tired of your own arrogance?”

“It’s not arrogance. Arrogance would be me going around saying that my cock is the be all and end all, ruining every woman I fuck for any other man thereafter, or some shit like that.”

“It did!”

Oh shit. The words were out of my mouth, before I could stop them. I instantly regretted it when I saw the look on his face.

He shifted his weight. “What?”

“I…I didn’t mean it. Forget it.”

He scoffed. “Darlin’, a man can’t just forget a claim like that.”

“Why didn’t you call?”

He blew out a breath and slumped against the fridge. “I was trying to protect you.”

“You said that before. It didn’t make sense then and it doesn’t now,” I pushed.

“You would’ve stayed here, if I hadn’t blown you off.”

“I—”

“I saw it, Soph. That look in your eyes. It was the same goddamn look in mine.”

“You’re saying—”

“I’m saying…it was more than sex to me. Much more.”

Oh my God.

“But you needed to go. You needed to get the hell out of this dead-end town. And…you need to now, too.”

“You don’t protect me. I do. I decide what’s best for me, not you, Brad.”

“You were young and naïve. I had to be the one to make the break.”

“So, it wasn’t about me being Ollie’s sister then?”

“I’m not gonna lie, that was also a factor. But, not the main one. Hell, the damage had already been done at that point. I’d already betrayed him by fucking you.”

“I thought you…I thought I was just another one of your sluts.”

His eyes flashed. In the next second, my back was against the fridge and he was looming over me. “You would never be one of them. Never, Soph.”

I could barely breathe with him so close to me. I don’t know how I managed it, but I eventually found my breath. “I…you were the first.”

I’d never seen him so shocked in all the time I’d known him. “You were a virgin?”

I nodded, biting my lip nervously.

He closed his eyes tightly for a moment and drew in a breath. When he opened them, they were full of pain and regret. “Christ, why didn’t you tell me?”

“I don’t know. I guess, I was worried. I didn’t want you to stop. I wanted you. I wanted that first time to be with you.”

“But…how could you have been a virgin? You were dating that prick, right? And…what about all the guys fawning over you in high school?”

“Jake and I hadn’t done anything at that point. I was…scared, I guess. As for high school, you remember my brother, right? No one dared to get close to me. They were all terrified of him. And you, ironically. The two of you blocked any guy who took an interest in me.”

That made him laugh a little. But it didn’t last long. That pained look was back just as quickly.

“You regret it, don’t you? Now that you know?” I asked.

“I wasn’t gentle, Soph. Hell, I was drunk and fucked up, because of the shit that’d happened that week.”

“You didn’t hurt me.”

“Still…fuck. If I’d known, I would’ve…taken my time with you.”

“Brad, it was—”

“Shit, Soph.”

A flurry of emotions played on his face. They shifted so quickly, that I couldn’t pinpoint any specific one. They all blended together. I couldn’t tell what he was thinking. Was he mad about what I’d told him? Did he feel betrayed, because he hadn’t known the truth about me at the time? I’d intended to tell him that night, but everything had happened so fast. And, as soon as he’d touched me, I hadn’t been capable of rational thought. The only thing I’d known then was that I hadn’t wanted him to stop; not for anything. I’d wanted him for so long and that night he’d finally reciprocated it. He’d wanted me. There was no way I could’ve walked away from that.

When he finally spoke, I released a stilted breath that I’d apparently been holding in the entire time.

“I need to rectify this,” he declared in an off-putting, matter-of-fact manner.

My brow furrowed. What the hell was he talking about? “How?”

He answered by lunging at me and hauling me off my feet.

Before I knew what was happening, he was carrying me out of the kitchen.
