“Weather the Storm is a heady blend of sweet, steamy and emotional with a dash of suspense. Readers’ hearts will ache for Magnolia while simultaneously cheering for her. She’s escaped an abusive marriage and is getting back on her feet and finding her confidence again. Simon is swoony; he’s a all around GOOD guy. He falls hard for Magnolia, and he’s perfectly patient with her as she heals from trauma. Farlow handles emotional and physical abuse with the appropriate seriousness while also delivering a compelling and beautiful romance.” – Mary at USAT’s HEA

“Weather the Storm is everything you can hope for in a book, and more. It has the sweet, southern charm we’ve come to expect from an LK Farlow story, but with an edge of suspense as you wait to find out how Magnolia and Simon’s story is going to play out.” – Megan Green, author of The Off-Season

“No one does sweet southern romance like LK Farlow. Weather the Storm is about so much more than a love story. Simon’s protectiveness and Magnolia’s strength sucked me in from the beginning.” – Jennifer Van Wyk, author of Feels Like Home

“I highly recommend this book–definitely one of my top reads of 2018 and Mrs. Farlow’s best work yet!” – Lo Brynolf, author of Bashful

Magnolia Ellington is all too aware that dangerous things can come in shiny packages. Her husband made sure to teach her that.

Desperate to escape his wrath—and his fists—she flees in the dark of night. Seeking safety and shelter with the only family she has left, Magnolia finds herself in the sleepy, Southern town of Dogwood—and in the arms of Simon McAllister.

Simon has always been more of a thinker than a doer. That changes the minute he meets shy and mysterious Magnolia. She has him rushing into action, ready and willing to do whatever it takes to earn her trust.

Slowly, with his steadfast determination and kind heart, Simon brings Magnolia out of her shell. But just as things start heating up between the two of them, the darkness of Magnolia’s past resurfaces, threatening to rip apart everything they’ve worked so hard for.

With their future hanging in the balance, Simon fears he’s losing Magnolia. Now, he must convince her that, together, they can weather the storm.

Magnolia launches herself at me, kissing me all over—my face, my chest, everywhere. “Slow down, pretty girl. We have time.”

“I’m just s-so happy, Simon.”

“I am too, believe me, but we need to get ready at some point so we can go down and talk to Mateo about your car.”

She deflates a little at the mention of it. Luckily, I know just the way to perk her back up. “Let’s get showered?”

“T-together?” she asks, her cheeks going rosy.

“I was hopin’.” I keep my tone light, not wanting her to feel pressured.

Wordlessly, Magnolia rises from the bed and drags the shirt she’s wearing over her head, dropping it at her feet.

“Swear to God, Goldilocks, I’ll never get tired of lookin’ at you.”

She bites her lip, though not because she’s nervous. Nah, my girl’s turned the hell on, and I very much intend to do something about it.

I scoot to the edge of the bed and pull her toward me so she’s standing between my legs. I place a kiss to her right hip, and then to her left, my eyes never leaving hers. Magnolia sighs in pleasure at the contact. I skim my nose across the expanse of smooth, tan skin between her hips until I’m just below her belly button. I press an open-mouthed kiss to her soft yet toned stomach, nipping lightly as I pull away.

“C’mon, let’s go get dirty so we can get clean.” I say the words as a joke, but when I look back up at Magnolia, her eyes are glazed over with want and need.

Grabbing her hand, I guide her to the shower. Once the water feels just right, I help her over the ledge of the tub, climbing in right behind her. Under the spray of the hot water, I make good on my promise of getting us dirty, using my hands and my mouth to make her feel so damn good, her bones feel like jelly.

Even though she’s spent, my girl offers to return the favor, but I decline. It’s not because I don’t want her, because shit, I do. Rather, I want her to know she’s worth more to me than her body. I want her to know she always comes first, literally and figuratively.

Bookstore owner Kerry Emerson finally seems to be back in control of her life. Her failure of a marriage firmly in her rearview mirror and her recent business expansion a success, she is in charge of her own future. One that is looking better than ever.

The sight of the tall man, with the familiar salt and pepper goatee pushing open the door of her store, sets her hair on end. He doesn’t exactly bring good memories.

FBI Special Agent in Charge, Damian Gomez, is just looking for a decent cup of coffee when he walks into the small store offering books and brew. The pretty, feisty woman behind the counter is an unexpected surprise. Not at all unpleasant, especially since her finger that used to hold a wedding ring is now bare.

Her wild hair, boho style and silvery grey eyes suddenly hold a lot of promise. But when his office is pulled into an international investigation into the trafficking of rare books and manuscripts, the straight-laced SAC realizes he has to keep his distance from the woman who might well be involved.

Easier said than done, since fate seems determined to throw them together.

Damian

“You?”

My head whips around at the sound of a woman’s voice.

It’s been a long-ass morning already with meetings I would’ve loved to have avoided. Since being put in charge of the Durango field office, it seems I spend more time in meetings than working in the field. I swear each week there are new task forces put together, and I can barely keep up. I stepped out of the office for a much-needed break to find that the coffee shop around the corner had a sign plastered on the door stating they were closed due to a family emergency. Desperate for my caffeine fix, I kept walking and bumped into Kerry’s Korner: Books & Brew. Something about the name is familiar. I push the door, which opens with the ring of a bell, when I hear her voice.

She’s pretty. The woman behind the counter looks like a seventies flower child, with wild, dirty blonde hair, some kind of flowy top leaving her collarbones and a goodly amount of cleavage exposed, and a pixie face. Something about her is familiar, and it appears she knows me, too. Fuck if I can’t place her.

“Got me at a disadvantage, sweets,” I tell her with a shrug.

“You’re FBI,” she says, propping her hands on her nicely rounded hips. “I remember you.”

I look at her a little closer. Not a hardship, there’s a lot to check out. Those pale gray eyes trigger a memory. “You’re Kimeo’s girl,” I say, remembering the case a few years ago when I first saw her for the briefest of moments. A case long since put to rest, but not before this woman was snatched and roughed up before we got to her. We’d been called in by Gus Flemming, a friend of mine who owns an investigation and security company in Cedar Tree. Kimeo, the wife of one of Gus’s guys, found herself in the middle of shady land deals and this woman, her best friend, had been kidnapped to ensure her silence. I may not have remembered her name until I saw her standing behind the counter of Kerry’s Korner, but I sure as hell remember her. I also remember the wedding ring on her finger, which is why I didn’t bother looking twice at the time.

The hands resting on her hips no longer sport that wedding ring, just a large knuckle ring on the middle finger of her left hand as a sort of fuck you to the world. I bet she flips that bird easily, judging by the attitude she throws off. I like it.

“Kerry,” she says, almost as a challenge.

“Right. You look better now,” I tell her, making her snort loudly.

“No shit. I’d just been used as a punching bag when you found me and shoved me into the back of a van without a word.” Yup, most definitely a challenge. She doesn’t like me much, I deduct from the slightly distasteful look on her face.

“Was a little preoccupied with my investigation. Sorry if I didn’t take the time to make nice.” Fuck me, I sound like a dick. Something about her attitude grates on me, especially when she rolls her eyes dramatically before placing her hands on the counter in front of her and leaning over.

“Damian. Right?” She doesn’t wait for my confirmation before she continues, “Well, Damian, what brings you to my bookstore?”

“Coffee. Straight up,” I tell her without blinking. She turns her back without a word and starts fiddling with the expensive-looking machine on the sideboard, and I take the opportunity to check out her backside. “Double shot?” she asks over her shoulder, catching me ogling.

“Good guess.” I smile at her, which only earns me another eye roll. Attitude in spades, this one. As much as it irritates me, it somehow turns me on, too.

She’s late thirties, maybe forty, if I had to venture a guess from the lines around her eyes. She obviously laughs a lot—something I wouldn’t mind hearing. I have a feeling with that slightly raspy voice of hers, her laugh will sound even sexier. She’s not wearing a stitch of makeup from what I can tell and seems totally at ease in her skin. Not usually the kind of woman I find myself drawn to, but this one has an appeal all her own. Most women I end up with are well put together: stacked, sweet, and sultry. Just the way I like them. This one, though? This one is like the fucking girl next door. Fresh-faced, with a hippy vibe, barely enough tit to fill my hands, but an ass that should be framed, it’s that lush. Always considered myself a boob man, until I just got an eyeful of her backside.

While she doctors the elaborate coffee machine, I take the time to check out her shop. An older building, it has an old-fashioned facade with shallow bay windows, displaying an assortment of books, framing the door. Old wood floors that have been left bare to the wear and tear of foot traffic, resulting in a well-worn look more suited to an old saloon. Rows of rugged bookcases, jutting out from the back wall, with chalkboard display signs indicating the different genres. The counter is on one side in front of the window and on the opposite side, in front of the second bay window, is a small seating arrangement with an old, brown leather couch and two club chairs around a small, round coffee table. On the counter is a large, round, glass cake stand with pastries.

“Here you go. Anything else with that? A pastry to sweeten you up a bit or perhaps a book on appropriate social behavior? I have both.” I can’t stop the smirk tugging at my mouth. This one’s a handful, for sure. Too much of one. I pull out my wallet and slap a couple of dollar bills on the counter.

“Nah,” I drawl. “Not the kind of sweet I’m looking for, and as for the book, I’ll just wait until you get done with it. You’re probably due for a reread.” I snag my coffee off the counter, and with a wink, I saunter out the door, leaving her standing with her mouth hanging open and fire shooting from those pretty gray eyes.

Blake Moreno doesn’t do relationships, ever.
With more money than he knows what to do with and his pick of beautiful women, he has no plans of becoming tied down.

Hadley Jacobs doesn’t have time for dating.
With plans to finish culinary school and to own her own bakery, she has her life all mapped out.

Blake thinks Hadley is infuriating…

Hadley thinks Blake is controlling…

Both couldn’t be more wrong.

When life throws them a curve ball, they have no choice but to catch it and to prove that in the end, love wins. Every. Time.

The minute I stepped into the bar, I spotted them. Hadley’s back was to me and, from where I was standing, it looked as if Belinda and Patrice were blocking her exit. Fucking hell. Since when were Belinda and Patrice friends? And where was Wayne? I started toward them. Bits and pieces of their conversation filtered in as I got closer.

“I’m sorry I took your friend’s job. I wasn’t aware the position had been offered to her,” Hadley told Belinda. “And I’m sorry that my piano playing skills were subpar, however, being that I’m a chef, this shouldn’t surprise you,” she directed at Patrice.

“I know why you’re here. I overheard Zane talking to Cathryn about it. You might be carrying Blake’s brat in your belly but take it from me when I say he isn’t going to take well to being trapped,” Patrice declared, right as I stepped up behind Hadley. Both Patrice and Belinda’s eyes jerked to me and bulged in surprise, but being that Hadley’s back was to me, she wasn’t aware of my presence.

“You’ve got me!” Hadley said, her tone laced with contempt and sarcasm. “Wow, you two are a regular Cagney and Lacey. Tell me, how did you figure it out? Because, really, I planned it so carefully.” Neither woman said a word. They just stood there staring at me. I, however, was highly entertained. Folding my arms over my chest, I waited to see what Hadley would say next. She didn’t disappoint.

“You know what this is about don’t you?” she whispered in a conspiratorial tone. “Blake thinks it’s about the baby, but it’s really about the money. I hear he’s loaded.” I silently chuckled when she expelled a wistful sounding sigh and followed it with, “I’ve always dreamed of being rich.” Both women jumped when she threw up her hands, and shouted, “Yep! Just call me gold digger!” On that note, she then turned to leave. A strangled shriek escaped when she smacked right into me. As she pressed her hands to my chest in order to keep from toppling over, the warmth of her touch seared through me.

“Blake!” she gasped, clearly shocked to find me standing there.

Before Hadley did something else, such as call Patrice Patsy again or refer to Belinda as Boobzilla—something I’d heard both she and Wayne do on more than one occasion—I reached for her hand. Ignoring Patrice and Belinda, who were still busy gawking at us, I said, “Come on, Gold Digger, we’re going to be late for our appointment,” and pulled her in the direction of the door. Right as we breached the threshold, I glanced back over my shoulder and gave the two vipers a look of warning, letting them know that we would be discussing this incident later.

“I didn’t see you standing there,” Hadley muttered, as we made our way toward the front of the hotel.

“Clearly,” I mused, while trying not to laugh at the scene I’d just witnessed. When she let out a disgusted sounding huff, I lost the battle and let the laughter roll. She responded with another huff and a face scrunch, and I thought, this woman is something else.

Within seconds, the door handle clicks, and I hold my breath in anticipation.
A man in a black suit and a red tie steps in. The door shuts behind him.
My eyes glide over his body, and his glide over mine. His face is also hidden behind a mask.
He’s tall, and his hair is thick and dark, just like his voice when he says, “Hello, Kitten …”
I’m struck with awe at the sound of his voice. It’s real. It’s him.
That same shiver runs up and down my spine as he approaches me slowly.
In a split second, images of violence flash through my mind. All the possible things that could happen. All the things he could do to me.
We’re alone, in a hotel room, and neither of us know each other by name.
He could do anything he wanted.
Take me.
Use me. Lock me up.
Kill me.
And no one would ever know it was him.
The perfect setting for the perfect crime.
Yet I’m not afraid of him.
I’m only afraid of my own reaction to what’s about to go down.
Meeting him was the only thing I wanted, and now that it’s finally happening, I wonder if it’ll be enough. If I can satiate my needs without crossing the line.
He comes even closer, but I don’t move an inch. I don’t know if it’s because I’m scared, or if it’s because my body feels as if it’s made of rocks and ice.
I shudder when he stands across from the bed, leans against the dresser, and casually slides his eyes from the tips of my toes hidden in black heels all the way up to my high ponytail without any shame.
His tongue dips out to wet his lips, and for a second there, I wish he licked mine instead.
He cocks his head. “So this is what you want?”
I nod and part my lips to say something, but nothing springs to mind. Nothing important … except for the fact I want him to fuck me raw.

Hope couldn’t find it in herself to blink, focused on God’s gift to womankind. Her aunt’s invitation to dinner had come at the perfect time, giving Hope an excuse to avoid her mother’s weekly nagathon. Since her idiot older brothers had hooked up with the loves of their lives, her mother had deemed Hope fair game again. So much for their pleasant détente, where Hope stopped blaming her mother for her many issues and Linda Donnigan stopped getting on Hope for breathing wrong.
Yet Hope hadn’t anticipated seeing J.T. Webster. He hadn’t been at the last two dinners Aunt Sophie had invited her to. “Greg?” she asked, her mind on other things.
Like how incredible J.T. filled out a simple T-shirt and jeans. The man had the prettiest brown skin, like a smooth chocolate caramel. Light but so filling.
She swallowed a sigh.
Liam was white, and she knew J.T.’s mom had been black. She also must have been gorgeous, because J.T. had his dad’s height and brawn, as well as the face of an angel who liked to sin. A lot.
She swallowed a sigh and continued to visually eat him up, wondering if the size of his hands and feet could be correlated to the size of other things.
God, get your mind off sex, Hope. His father is here! Aunt Sophie is here! And you’re off men, remember?
“Yeah, Greg,” J.T. said, looking concerned. “Gas Works Park ring a bell?”
Geez, she’d seen Greg and J.T. just last week. “Oh, no. No problems on that front.” To Liam, who studied her a little too intently, she explained, “Ex-boyfriend. A jerk I ran into. No biggie.” She shot J.T. a look, pleased when he kept quiet.
Last weekend, Greg, a guy she hadn’t dated or seen in over four months, had accused her of using her brother to bother him. But Hope hadn’t thought about Greg the Cheater since she’d dumped him, so she knew her brothers couldn’t care less about the guy. When Greg had tried to get a little gropey at the park, she’d taken him down, courtesy of the self-defense classes her brothers taught.
J.T. hadn’t had to do more than watch her take Greg out. She’d been so proud of herself… when she’d been able to tear her imagination from what J.T. would look like naked.
So sad those images replayed themselves over and over again.
“Right.”
Liam stared from her to J.T., a question in his eyes.
“So who’s pregnant?” she asked, hoping to shift attention away from herself.
Rena squealed. “Del is! A tiny little bun in her McCauley oven.”
Del looked embarrassed, which was funny, because Del could out swear the mechanics she bossed around on a daily basis and took woman power to the next level. The woman had arms covered in tattoos, funky ash-blonde braids, and icy gray eyes that seemed to look through, and not at, a person.
Hope could see a faint resemblance from brother to sister despite their different skin tones. Both J.T. and Del had the same shape of their eyes and stubborn chins, just like their father. Only someone as obsessed with J.T. would have noticed that, she realized, and felt like a moron for being so enthralled with the man.
Fortunately, Liam and Rena started badgering Del for details, letting Hope off the hook.
Since she hadn’t yet greeted her aunt, Hope started to turn and found J.T. suddenly in her way. “Oh, sorry.”
He put a hand out to stop her from bumping into him. And sweet baby sexy, she felt the touch go from her arm all the way through her body, centering between her legs. Oy.

EXCERPT:

Jude adjusted his scope’s sight and settled down in the slight depression between two trees. Pine straw, dying leaves and branches covered him. He’d made the blind to blend into the landscape seamlessly. The sun was behind him now, its heat nothing more than a fading promise. The wind had picked up an hour ago, and he allowed its bitter cold to seep into his soul. It was soothing to a degree, though Jude doubted anything could ever completely cool his rage. He’d been here for two days, following intel that would hopefully lead him to…her. He’d stopped even thinking her name months ago. The sound of it reverberating through his mind caused unbearable pain that spread from his heart through every limb. It was debilitating, that pain. And unending. Instead, he remembered her face, the way her body had once moved beneath him, and the promises she’d made that had inevitably been nothing more than lies.

Movement in the compound below had him tightening his grip on his rifle. He’d been trained to take down targets a mile away, but today was simply reconnaissance. When he’d seen her in Beirut six weeks ago, after a year of believing her dead and gone, his mind had denied what his heart had immediately recognized.

El—her.

Then she’d disappeared in the smoke and confusion, and he’d had no choice but to leave her again.

In the hell that was Lebanon.

He tightened his grip on his weapon, tamping down his dangerous emotions. Below him, four white Range Rovers pulled up to the concrete warehouse that had once been a chemical engineering facility. Unsubstantiated rumors had it that the facility’s purpose was to conceal Horace Dresden’s biochemical weapons stash. Whatever the case, those rumors had hit Jude’s ears and his skin had prickled.

Endgame’s mission for two years had been the elimination of Horace Dresden. For Jude, the mission had morphed. Oh, he wanted Dresden, but his motivation resided in the fact that if he could find that murdering son of a bitch he’d find, her.

The right-side driver’s door of the lead Rover opened, and a dainty foot encased in a nude stiletto heel lowered to the ground. The leg attached to the foot had his gut clenching. He’d tasted the arc of that calf, tongued the indention of that knee, and had his hands all over that thigh.

She stepped out of the Rover completely, and his gut clenched then relaxed. It was a reaction he’d only had with her. Jude was a warrior, a soldier. He’d spent most of his adult life training, fighting and killing. He was damn good at what he did. Had never even realized something was missing from his life until she’d stepped into his sphere and taken him over.

The wind caught her overcoat and tossed the ivory folds, allowing him a glimpse of a body that was thinner than he remembered but no less captivating. Through the scope, his gaze trailed upward over her hips and then higher across her breasts and up along the slope of her collarbone. Her skin was the same color as her coat but softer, glowing. The flavor of that skin danced like a phantom over his tongue.

The trees above him bowed to the wind, and in his spot on the ridge above the compound, His nostrils flared, a stallion scenting its mare. He swore he could taste her on the breeze. She moved to shut the door and, in an instant, froze.

She slowly lifted her hand and removed the dark sunglasses that hid the frost of her gaze from him. The scar at her temple mocked him. It was the only mark on the otherwise unblemished face that stalked his dreams. And then she angled her head toward his location.

His heart locked in his chest. No way she had any idea he was here. He hadn’t even told King where he was headed—had kept the information about Dresden’s supposed compound from the Piper, King, and his teammates. This was what he’d been reduced to. Spying on a woman who’d betrayed him…betrayed them. Desperate for a glimpse of her. Desperate to make her pay.

The wind settled at that moment, but still she gazed up toward him. The man who’d gotten out of the Rover on the other side must have called her name, because she glanced at him and her lips moved before she began walking toward the building. Jude was too far away to hear her words.

Six men got out of each of the remaining Rovers, each carrying a small metal briefcase. Jude would bet his left nut they were here to obtain some of Dresden’s horde of biochemicals.

He trained his gaze on her again, watching as her long legs ate up the distance between the Rover and the building, and for a crazy second, Jude remembered her as she’d been the night before his world had been blown to hell. He saw her walking on their beach in North Carolina, the wind whipping her long ebony hair, the waves playing havoc around her delicate ankles. He saw her head turn as a grin broke across her face. He saw the flush of their recent lovemaking on her body.

A hawk screamed in the distance, and Jude was jerked to the present. Instead of seeing his woman through the sight of the scope, he saw her. A stranger. A traitor.

Jude’s sight remained locked on her, his finger caressing the trigger as he let the anger flow through him. He’d heard the whispers—maybe she was a double agent. Maybe she wasn’t the traitor he knew her to be. Maybe she was both and neither.

Maybe he hadn’t given everything he was to a ghost.

He needed the truth, and he’d resolved that he’d have to be cold and merciless in finding it. She’d led them on this path. She could damn well walk it with him.

The man entered the building, but before she stepped in behind him, she once again turned her gaze to Jude’s location.

She couldn’t see him, but for Jude, it didn’t matter. She knew he was there. He knew she knew. She raised both hands, holding up six fingers. It was so quick Jude wondered if his mind was playing tricks on him as his heart threatened to burst from his chest. Had it been supplication or warning? He didn’t know—but the sadness that passed like a cloud over the contours of her face in that moment had him swearing.

Then she lowered her hands as the soft curves of her mouth lifted in a travesty of a smile.

Jude cursed again, the wind taking the foul word and tossing it to and fro. As she moved out of his sight, his gut clenched again. King had warned Jude that all was not as it seemed, to give him time to figure it all out.

Jude hadn’t been inclined to give himself that time. Until this moment.

Because there’d been one other emotion on her face just now that ripped a hole right through Jude’s shriveled heart. He’d seen it many times over the course of their year together but had despaired he’d ever see it again. It had been the truest of all the emotions she’d ever displayed with him.

It was the one thing that stayed his trigger finger. It was the only thing that could save her.

Love.

NSFW ALERT!

His mouth sealed over hers without allowing a response—not that she was able. The gentle kiss of earlier became a voracious claiming. He was hungry, and she appeared to be on the menu. She only hoped, as aroused as she’d become, it would be more than the appetizer that was their first time.

He allowed her a breath while his tongue traced her lips before plunging inside once again, sending pulses of need surging through her. The sensual assault did more than jog her recollections of the night before, it revived the uninhibited carnal desire he’d stirred inside her. Forgotten were the circumstances that brought her here, in his arms, entwined with him on his bed, and the shock and dismay over his earlier revelations. She also didn’t heed the warning bells clanging in the recesses of her mind, all she cared about was satisfying the appetite his touch had awakened.

Parting her legs more with one of his own, he shifted over her, his hips fitting into the cradle of her thighs. She kissed him back, unreserved in her response, her tongue sparring with his while her hands fisted in his hair holding him close, afraid he would end things too soon.

His hand moved from her breast and slid down her side, around in back to stroke over the curve of one cheek, and down her thigh to her knee. He hitched it high over his hip, sending the gauzy gown upward, baring her from the waist down. He pulled her in closer, his fingers splayed across her bottom as the length of his cock still contained by his trousers, pressed against the seam of her pussy.

He broke the kiss but didn’t go far, his lips a fraction above her own when he demanded to know, “You feel the connection, don’t you, paulova? Like a current passing between us. It started back in the forest when we first touched and has grown stronger.”

“Yes,” she uttered, breathing quickly, approaching a pant. “I’ve never experienced anything like it before.”

“Because you are mine, sweet mate. The one made only for me.”

“But, Trask, how can that be?”

“It can only be explained by fate. Why else would the Maker bring you to our hunting planet for us to find, a species so like us in so many ways, if it wasn’t meant to be?”

He recaptured her mouth as his hand slid up her belly and molded to her breast again, skin on skin this time, his fingers stroked, petted, and lightly pinched the nipple until she was moaning against his lips.

“I want you, Lana,” he groaned into her mouth.

What else she might have said was smothered by his lips, his kiss more demanding this time.

“I’m going to take you now, and when I breach your body and claim you as my mate, you’ll experience even greater pleasure than you experienced last night.”

His lips trailed a line of heat along her jaw, down her throat, and lower to her breasts. He pressed the mounds together, which plumped them up fuller and the hard tips seemed to reach for his mouth. He fed on first one then the other, his hot tongue swirling, laving, and sometimes, rapidly flicking.

“I’m going to possess you completely, transform your body, and make you mine as the Maker intended.” He growled more than spoke as he feasted with voracious hunger, sucking a hard peak into his mouth, his tongue lashing it from inside.

Lana cried out, her back bowing off the bed, fingers clutching fistfuls of his thick silky hair as she hung on.

He raised his head, his unearthly eyes dark and wild with passion. “Say you want this, too, little one, because once done, there is no going back.”

He’d said a lot, most of it while practically devouring her flesh, but beyond giving her more pleasure than before, which she thought impossible, it all melded together, drowned out by the pounding of her heart in her ears. She needed him—now—and didn’t hesitate in her response.

“Yes, Trask, I want this.”

About the Author

A USA Today and #1 international bestselling author, Maddie Taylor is a lifelong reader who became a romance junkie as a teen with her first romance novel, The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss. From then on, she was hooked, and gobbled up everything she could get her hands on, whether contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi. If there was romance to be found between a strong alpha male, and a sassy, adventurous and ofttimes defiant yet loving woman, Maddie was all over it. As an author, she stays true to those themes writing steamy erotic romance, with a side of kink, and adding elements of intrigue, danger and suspense to her plots.

Maddie started writing as a hobby. Her stories stayed private while she raised a family and worked full time as a registered nurse. It wasn’t until 2012 that she decided to take the plunge and submit her first book for publication: Captain My Captain. She went on to publish eleven novels the first year.

Synopsis:

JORDAN

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.

Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.

I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

*BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+.

My Review:

I started reading this book at 0200 this morning, had to catch a few hours sleep and then read devoured the rest of Pike & Jordan’s story at every opportunity while at work…….

My overwhelming feeling is still FUUUUCK!!!! I ADORED this book…. going in I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect but hells bells, it was everything you’d want from a Penelope Douglas book and so much more!

I wanted this pair together from their first meeting, then when Jordan and Cole moved into his dad’s home I desperately wanted him to mess up so much that Pike and Jordan would have a chance, because together they were fanbloodytastic!

This books pulled at all of my emotions. It made me smile, laugh, twisted my heart, had my stomach in damned knots – I wanted things to work in their favour soooo much it hurt at points – and I’m not afraid to admit that it made me cry (thankfully not big ugly snot tears – ‘cos as I said I read a lot at work – but the waterworks did start!). This book was hot as Hades, the connection and attraction between Jordan & Pike was palpable and even though there was a 19 year age gap, at no time did their interactions or relationship make me feel uncomfortable!

Well written as ever, with a great supporting cast – I loved Cam and Shel while I could have happily obliterated Pike’s ex (Cole’s mom).  Birthday Girl was so very different from what we’re used to from Penelope but it’s a fantastic read and one I definitely recommend you give a go and it gets 5 big scented candle stars from me!!

Excerpt:

Jordan is working at a bar, and Pike comes in to meet friends.

PIKE

“What the hell is she wearing?” I grumble, sliding into the booth.

Dutch turns his head toward me, his drink inches from his lips. “It’s the lingerie show,” he tells me. “They have it every Thursday night. The bartenders and servers don nighties or corsets and serve drinks and food. It’s fun.”

No, not really.

But I look around and see a few other ladies carrying out appetizers and bringing drinks, some of them in very thin attire. At least Jordan’s corset looks as thin as armor.

“But Jordan’s never done it before,” he goes on. “That’s what shocked me. Thought you should know.”

“Why the fuck would I want to know?” I pull a beer out of the ice bucket on the table.

“Yeah, sorry.” He turns away, mumbling into his glass, “You seem like you couldn’t care less.”

I shoot him a sideways look, hearing the laughter in his words.

Sticking the beer back in the bucket, untouched, I rise and head to the bar. I hear a snort behind me, but I don’t care. She’s kind of my responsibility, and I don’t want her doing things like this, because she thinks she needs money.

There’s only one bartender besides Jordan. The owner, Shel. I’m sure she hasn’t forgotten me, so I veer to the opposite end and catch Jordan’s attention as she pops the tops from a line of six bottles of beer.

“What the hell are you wearing?” I lean in, speaking as quietly as I can.

She jerks her head toward me, meets my eyes, and quickly turns away again like I’m the last person she wants to deal with right now.

She hands over the beers, collects the cash and spins around, punching the screen in front of her. “It’s fine,” she assures me. “It’s just a corset, Pike.”

“They are all looking at you.”

She nods, smiling sarcastically. “That’s the point.”

“Jordan,” I sigh, trying to whisper as I squeeze around some old dude at the bar. “This is a small town. What if your father were to walk in?”

“He doesn’t come in here,” she says, closing the register drawer and finally looking at me. “And neither do you, normally.” A blush crosses her cheeks. “Besides, I’m not stupid. I wouldn’t take part in something I thought would humiliate me.”

She turns and hands the change back to the customer, but he waves her off, letting her keep it. She smiles and turns back around, dropping the bills into an already overflowing canister.

“What are you even doing here?” she says, starting to mix another drink. “I thought you were sitting the bachelor party out, because…” She sets the bottle down and does air quotes as she imitates my growling voice, “‘there needed to be at least one sober person at work tomorrow’.”

I arch a brow at her. I don’t sound like that.

Reaching into my pocket, I pull out the flyer and push it over the bar at her.

She stills, and her face goes ashen. “Where did you find that?”

She grabs it and dumps it somewhere under her. To a trash can probably.

Taking a napkin, she sets it in front of a customer and gives him the fresh drink she just made.

“If you need money,” I tell her, “I’ll lend you whatever you need, okay?”

And she stops, slowly turning her eyes on me. Her gaze sharpens, angry, and she looks like she wants to yell at me, but she doesn’t. Instead she whips around and barrels down the bar and through the partition, turning only enough to crook a finger at me before she twirls back around and heads down the hallway.

My stomach sinks. I really don’t mean to piss her off as much as I do. What did I say now?

Veering through the crowd, I make my way down the empty hallway, finally coming to the same room she was crying in when I pissed her off the last time.

Entering through the open door, I see her standing with her hands on her hips and her head cocked at me.

“I would rather eat from a dumpster than take money from you,” she bites out.

I should shut up. But God help me, I can’t. “Hate to break it to you, but you already do,” I tell her. “You live in a house where you pay no rent or utilities, young lady.”

“I cook and clean for you!” she shouts, but I doubt anyone can hear us back here and through the music. “I pay my way, you arrogant prick!”

“Alright, alright,” I growl, blinking long and hard. “You’re right, okay? But, Jordan, men will get ideas. They’ll think they have a free pass and they can touch what belongs to my son. You’re embarrassing him.”

“Your son?” she mocks, laughing. “Well, you just missed him, actually. He already saw me, and he doesn’t care, Pike. He thought I looked good, and then he left with his friends. He doesn’t care!”

“Well, I care!”

The words are out of my mouth before I can stop them, and I freeze, almost too afraid to breathe.

Oh, shit. What did I just say?

“Alexei, are you okay?”

“No. I’m not.” He turned, facing her now but still staying by the window. Keeping distance between them. “If those two… damnable women had not drugged my stew. If you hadn’t seen me with them. If you hadn’t been attacked. So many what ifs, and so many lost years. All this time, we could’ve been together. We could’ve had every night together. Met every morning in each other’s arms.” He slashed his arm through the air. “No weeks or months spent wondering if I’d get to see you again. No missing you with every beat of my heart.”  The tears steadily flowed. His canines had dropped, and his eyes held the unmistakable telltale yellow of a transitioned Lycan. Claws tipped his fingers. Wolf and man seemed to battle for control, and Lex was emotionally raw. “So many nights I wished you were there, so I could tell you I loved you. Every night, I prayed you were safe. And many nights, I asked God why you couldn’t be mine. But. You. Were. And the idiocy of three people cost us two thousand years of happiness.”

“You’re right,” she said as she rose off the bed. “I can’t understand why any of this happened. I’ve questioned the very same thing, and can find no answer. But we’re here together now. And isn’t that what counts?” He watched as she took slow steps toward him, and his expression slowly began to soften. “In a matter of speaking, you claimed me that night in Portugal, and we’ve been together since.”

His eyes momentarily widened in surprise. “Yes, but we spent so many nights apart. Nothing should have separated us. Nothing.” He was right. There was no sense trying to talk him down when she believed what Lex said just as strongly as he did. “You mentioned Portugal. Were you following me?”

Nodding slowly, she now stood in front of him. “Yes. Jules made sure I had control of my hungers, and taught me how to use my strengths. Once that was done, and I was confident in my abilities, I went in search of you. By that time, you were serving the King. And I followed you on your missions.”

“When I saw you, I damned near lost track of what I was doing.”

She smiled, remembering making eye contact with Lex for the first time. The sensation was electric, the pull of a Lycan mate bond weakened, but still present. “But you did your job, and then you came to me.”

His claws retracted, and a smile curling his full lips, he nodded. “And then I came to you.” He pulled her into his arms, and embraced her firmly. “I mourn all the moments we lost.”

“As do I, Alexei. But we have the future.”

His chest shook as he exhaled a ragged breath. “Yes we do. I can’t lose you again, Elizabeth.”

“I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere.”

“You!” she blurted.

His striking light blue eyes widened, then narrowed just as quickly. “Me,” he said simply.

“Tell me you’re not the man I’m supposed to marry,” she rasped, her heart pounding erratically. In the coffee shop, he’d been dressed in a lavender suit coat, a cream button down, and black designer jeans. Sexy as hell but just as douchey. Today, he was wearing a thin gray t-shirt, dark blue designer jeans, and a scowl. His blue eyes were a stunning contrast to his ink black hair. He was gorgeous—but he was also an asshole.

He shrugged, emphasizing the breadth of his shoulders. “That depends…are you Helene Collins?” he asked.

Unnerved, she nodded. “That’s me,” she admitted, doing her damnedest to keep her ham and swiss panini in her stomach.

He crossed his muscular arms over his broad chest and stared at her. “Then I am the man you’re supposed to marry.” His gaze skimmed her, taking in her bare feet, her thick hips, her breasts, and finally meeting her gaze again. “Interesting.”

Interesting? What the hell did that mean? She recovered from her shock quickly, her anger mixing with her anxiety to cause an explosion.

“Interesting doesn’t begin to cover it,” she countered, crossing her own arms over her ample chest, which only made the sweater slip further down her shoulder. If he thought that, because wasn’t as pretty as the women he was used to dating, that he could skitter out from their contract, he was in for one hell of a rude awakening. “You signed the contract, I signed the contract, so you’re as stuck with me as I am with you. So, suck it up buttercup.” Having reached the end of her steam-powered outburst, she finally let the man’s expression register in her mind. He was grinning, and by God is was mind-blowingly sexy.

“You’re right. We are stuck,” he drawled, dropping his arms to slide his hands into his pockets. “But I think I need to add a new clause…”
