Excerpt:

Her gaze moved from one to the other with an expectant look on her face. Her eyes rested on Jack when he leaned forward to rest his arms on the table. His beer was between his big hands and she watched his fingers trace the drops of condensation as they raced down the bottle.

“Us.” Jack’s hazel eyes locked with hers.

She swallowed. Hard. “Us? What do you mean?”

“The three of us. There’s more going on between us than just work.” His words held a note of conviction.

Oh God! He said three. He definitely said three. They couldn’t possibly know that she wanted both of them, could they? How the hell had she given that away? She thought she’d been so professional with them.

“Stop panicking, Ellie. Nothing we say or do from now on will affect our plans for the restaurants.” Nate’s calming words helped to some extent, but she still hadn’t taken her eyes off Jack. He was watching her like he expected her to run at any moment. He looked like he’d enjoy chasing her down and catching her too.

“I don’t understand…”

“We want you, Ellie. We need to know if you feel the same way.” Jack stated.

“We? What does that mean? I…both of you? But…”

“Yes. We want you. We need to know if you feel the same. Would you be prepared to be with us both?”

How was she supposed to respond to that? Nothing in her limited experience with men had prepared her for this conversation. She couldn’t see how anything good—well, apart from the sex—was going to come from this. How were they supposed to juggle working together, fucking, and being in a threesome? She wanted to though, so badly. Oh God, just the thought of having both of them.

But she just couldn’t risk it. What would happen when it was over? How could they possibly remain friends and work together? She’d be completely alone again if she had to leave. Her brain felt like it was in danger of a full meltdown. The temptation to run was strong and before she knew what she was doing, she’d jumped up. Her chair fell back. A distant part of her brain knew this wasn’t the most dignified way to handle this, but her fight or flight response was definitely urging her to get the hell out of there and not make a massive mistake.

She vaguely registered Nate’s shocked expression turning into a fleeting look of distress, but she didn’t get far before a steely arm grabbed her around her waist, yanking her off her feet. She was fairly sure she let out a little squeal as she landed on Jack’s lap.

“What the hell, Ellie?”

“Jack, calm down. She’s obviously freaked out.”

“I get that, but when did running away solve anything? We’re all adults here. If she doesn’t want this, all she has to do is say no.”

“We’ve gone about this all wrong, come on too strong. She’s scared. God, Ellie, we never wanted that. We just want to be with you. That’s all we’ve ever wanted.”

Jack’s arm held her firmly around her middle while his other hand rested on her hip.

Her heart was still trying to beat its way out of her chest, but she couldn’t ignore the heat emanating from his body. The hand on her hip kept gently, rhythmically flexing and releasing. She started to relax as she quietly listened to their words. She could hear the anxiety in both their voices and felt a rush of guilt at how she’d reacted. She was such a naive idiot—but she’d beat herself up for that later. Right now, she needed to make things right with the two most important men in her life.

“I’m sorry,” she said softly. “I’m an idiot. I shouldn’t have tried to run off like that.”

“Jesus, don’t apologize, Ellie.” Nate reached across the table to take her hand. “It’s ok that you don’t want this. We’ll carry on and forget we ever mentioned it. Nothing needs to change—”

“I want it,” she whispered.

Praise for the Wolves of Willow Bend series:

“Long dished out a lot of unexpected twists and turns and did a great job tying it all together. The build-up and bits of action kept me up late at night flipping the pages.” – Booked & Loaded

“ROGUE WOLF is a fast paced, intriguing look into the world of shifters. Salvatore is old world a bit stodgy and Margo is very much new world and on top of that a lone wolf and Enforcer. How is it possible that these two could be mates? In author Heather Long’s vivid and fun imagination it’s very easy.” – Fresh Fiction

“BAYOU WOLF is in a word … amazing. All the reader can do is hold on for the ride and enjoy the fireworks.” –
Fresh Fiction

“If you love sexy wolf shifters, sweet love stories and action then you have to pick up UNTAMED WOLF by Heather Long.” – Annetta Sweetko, Fresh Fiction

Excerpt from River Wolf:

So not ready to be awake…

A knock on the door intruded in her drifting and she groaned. Dammit, she was a guest. She couldn’t stay in bed all day. In fact, what she needed to do was get up, shower, dress and get her ass on the road. Florida seemed a hell of a long way to go, though. Rolling over, she shoved the blankets away then climbed out of the bed. Glaring at the light between the curtains, she rubbed a hand over her face, then stumbled to the door.
Opening it a crack, she gazed at her host. Goddammit. He looked perfect. Dressed in a clean, nicely pressed shirt with the top two buttons open to reveal the faint curls of dark against his chest and smelling like heaven, he looked good enough to eat. His hair wasn’t even damp, though it fell in a soft wave toward his forehead. He’d been up long enough to shower and dress—and he wore a smile.
“Ugh,” she sighed. “Please God tell me you are not one of those happy morning people.”
The corner of his sensual mouth quirked higher. The effect on his expression devastated her sleepy senses. No human should ever look so damn good without coffee. The combination of rake and boy next door added to his appeal, but the trace of scars and mottled skin gave him a ruggedness she desperately wanted to smooth away. “I woke you.”
“Not exactly,” she admitted, rubbing her cheek against the door and leaning on it a little more heavily. Everything ached and she wanted to go back to sleep. “I’m used to getting by on a lot less sleep.” And rolling out of bed to go to work for eight hour shifts that as often as not turned into ten to twelve hours on her feet. “I think I am tireder than I thought.” She yawned the last three words, and when she glanced at him again, his expression softened.
Extending a finger, he traced the line of her cheek and it was a soothing motion, one which had her eyes half-closing in pleasure. “Go back to bed, Colby.” His voice washed over her. “I’ll be in my office working.”
“I can’t laze about in bed all day.” No matter how good it sounded.
“Why not?”
“Because…” She had to go to Florida or at least say her goodbyes. She was a guest and not even an intentional one. “…Luc. I should probably check on him.”
“He’s fine, the doctor is with him.” The indulgence in his voice evaporated, but the steadiness in his tone remained. “Go sleep. When you wake up, come find me. We’ll have coffee.”
Tempting. So. So. Tempting. “I’m up now…but coffee sounds like heaven. Really, really strong coffee.”
“Double pot? I made one, I can run it through again.”
Colby groaned at the idea. Now that he’d mentioned it, she could smell the coffee. It proved even more alluring than the sweet vanilla and jasmine entwining the pine of his cologne on her pillow. Releasing the door to stretch, she would have thumped her tail if she’d had one. “Yes, please. If it wouldn’t be too much to ask.”
Silence greeted her comment, and she found Brett gazing at her. Rapt admiration in his eyes as he trailed his gaze down her body and up again.
Fuck me… She still only wore a t-shirt and panties and she’d just given him a show. “Crap. Sorry.” Slamming the door shut, she leaned against it. Adrenaline burned through the remaining traces of sleepiness, adrenaline and a healthy dose of lust. Having him look at her like that warmed inside and out.
“Please,” his voice stroked her through the door. “Don’t apologize. I’ll go fix the coffee. Come and find me.”
The invitation had her toes curling and she bit her lip. “I will,” she said, then added in a low whisper. “I promise.”
“I’ll be waiting.”
A shiver skated over her spine and she closed her eyes. Maybe she should have invited him inside to go back to bed with her. Inappropriate as hell, and impulsive, but she bet Brett would wake her even better than the coffee.
He already has…

“Good morning,” he said, his voice still thick with sleep. He wrapped his muscular arms around my belly from behind me, the evidence of his arousal pressed against the small of my back. My breath caught and my heart quickened as he nuzzled the sensitive spot under my ear. Just this one simple act had my core pulsing with liquid heat. His hands roamed north, barely grazing my belly, and tenderly kneaded my swollen breasts. Moaning, I tilted my head up toward his and caught his searing lips with mine.

Abandoning the pan in front of me, I turned and threw my arms around his neck. Passion fueled my body as our lips frantically mashed together. Our tongues clashed, dueling over the right to invade the others mouth. Shane’s hands cupped my behind, then gripped hard as he led me over to the table. He swept aside the napkins and papers that covered it and lifted me onto the smooth surface.

Red colored my vision as my primal need took over. Shane pulled off my bathrobe at the same moment I yanked down his sweatpants. My mouth watered at the size of his erection and I eagerly stroked his throbbing, rigid shaft. His head rolled back and he groaned at my touch. There was a time for cuddling and foreplay, but this wasn’t it. His hazel eyes smoldered, and he desperately ripped the thin material of my cotton underwear right out from under me. Craving his touch, his body, his heat against mine, I leaned back on my elbows and gave him the opening he wanted.

When I was ten, my father indoctrinated me into the family.

A brotherhood who would fight, protect, and give their lives for one another. A club whose ties ran thicker than blood, murkier than the dirt and grime that tainted my soul. Stronger than the bonds that connected me to my own family.

A band of brothers, where loyalty was kept and paid in a currency of blood.

When I was twenty-seven, I betrayed that brotherhood.

I’ve spent every day since running, avoiding paying back that debt.

My name is Daniel Johnson. I have betrayed everyone I ever loved.

And I’ll betray her too.

This is my story—if you’re screwed up enough to want to read it.

I pick up a cup of cold, stale, black coffee and chug it down. It tastes like shit, so I screw the cap off of a bottle of Jack and chase the black filth with the burn of amber. I set it back on the table while the familiar click of my gun being cocked echoes through my small room. I laugh. Fucking ballsy bitches make me hot.

“Hands in the air, and turn around. Slowly,” the woman says through a scratchy throat. I do as she asks, mostly because I want to keep my spine intact, but also partly because bitches with guns are fucking hot, and I’m hard as a rock just thinking about the way she’s gonna look with a pistol trained on me.

She’s been busy while I was out, rummaging through my drawers and finding a pair of loose tracksuit pants. They’re rolled at the waist, so much that it makes her look pregnant. That, combined with her crazy fuckin’ cat lady hair and the filth covering her body, makes her look like a homeless person.

I smile and clasp my hands behind my head. Her eyes rove over me, taking in my size. She’s checking me for the arsenal I so obviously have stashed away in my fucking worn, faded jeans. She’s not checking me out and dreaming about me taking her rough and hard on my fucking scratched-up dining table, but I still get a fucking boner out of having her eyes roam all over me.

“Pick up the keys, and open the door,” she commands.

“If you run, they’ll shoot you.”

“Pick up the fucking keys.”

I snatch up the keys and lob them at her, hard enough that she has to twist out of the way. She cries out as she does, proving to me that her ribs are definitely injured, maybe even cracked. I lunge at her. Shoving her back against the bed, I land on top of her, warding off her blows with one hand and squeezing her wrist with the other until she drops the gun on the floor.

“Get off me!” she screams.

“You’re not leaving this clubhouse,” I whisper in her ear as she struggles beneath me. “The best you can hope for is to play nice and I might decide to keep you as a house mouse. But if you piss me off, and if you pull on me with my own gun again, your life will be so much worse. You thought the dentist was fucked up? Baby, you haven’t seen anything until you’ve lived inside my fantasies for a day. So if I were you, I’d be really fuckin’ careful about how you play your next move.”

“Look at me. Look at what you have saved.”

Gabriel released Ariah’s chin and tore away the bandage in a harsh movement. As his eyes bore into her own, pale moonlight fell upon the deformity, illuminating the twisted flesh and grotesque welts. The sight reminded her of a beautiful chateau . . . a stunning fortress situated along the coastline . . . one that had fallen into ruin and neglect. The skin was concave, destroyed, cavernous – a remnant of former glory. And the surrounding features – his burning eyes, the right side of his face, his powerful body – dwarfed the disfigurement with a striking beauty.

“Look at the monster you have created. Look upon my face, Ariah.”

She shivered at the sound of her name; slightly muffled from the injury to his mouth, it slid from his tongue with equal parts venom and hunger.

“I was supposed to die that night . . .” The last of his words ended in a choked whisper. His face fell forward in despair until his forehead was pressed against her own. He was impossibly close. And he appeared every gram a flesh-and-blood warrior – coarse and ruthlessly untamed. Sweltering heat radiated from his body and engulfed all five of her senses. She was suffocating. Visions of that long-ago night echoed in her mind until she could perceive nothing else. Ariah gave a shallow cry as she struggled to free herself once more.

“Don’t. Don’t leave me. Please.”

Her movements ceased. The words struck a chord deep inside her chest. She connected her gaze with his and was rendered speechless by the naked anguish in his stare. Regret and desire were etched in every line of his face – but what stole her breath was something entirely different. For the second time, it was neither anger nor resentment that radiated from his eyes, but a longing so intense that it nearly overwhelmed her: hope

Is it really wrong to have more than one boyfriend?

I brought a new one into my bed almost every night.
From conference rooms to broom closets, I escaped reality with my leading men. Okay, so they were fictional book boyfriends. In reality I should have been concentrating on classes while I looked for a living, breathing man to help me achieve my romantic fantasies. It was a friend who suggested combining my passions for romance novels and psychology to generate my Master’s thesis research topic: Does the modern day romance novel leading man create unrealistic expectations for a prolonged adult relationship?

To find out, I’d run a social experiment. I’d be the constant. The variables would be my leading men. I’d date every stereotype in the books, from billionaires to bad boys, rock stars to bikers, dominants, athletes, and…my stepbrother?

If my research was successful, I’d end up with a degree and maybe even my very own happy ending.

“What’s that?” Austin asked, snatching my list out of Shannon’s hand.

“The list for my research project. Do you know any men who fit my criteria?” I asked. He studied the list for a moment before handing it back to me. “I know a few.”

Six eyes turned to Austin. “Who?” I asked.

“I know a rock star. Well, kind of. He sings for a local band, but they’ve got a great following. I know several businessmen, but not any CEOs. I might be able to hook you up with one, though. And I know a few bars around here where your bad boys hang out.”

My jaw dropped. Everyone has that one friend who knows everybody. Austin had lived in San Diego his entire life, so he knew the lay of the land.

“Take me to your bars!” I practically yelled, garnering a glare from students studying nearby. “Sorry,” I whispered.

“Wait a minute,” Shannon said. “I thought of a few you’re missing from your list.”

A few I was missing? I thought I’d pretty much covered all the bases. “Who?”

“You need a Fabio.” She stated it like it was obvious.

“Like a cover model?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Sure. Or like a historical romance guy.”

I laughed. Shannon could be a bit of an airhead sometimes. “Where am I going to find a historical romance guy? We’re in the present tense, Shannon.”

“Duh. Renaissance Festival. And Austin, you seem to know everybody else. Do you know any vampires?”

Laughter bubbled up from my chest. I couldn’t help when it spilled out, and when I looked over at Austin and Scott, I found a similar reaction. Shannon stared at us blankly.

“What?” she asked.

“Vampires?” I asked through my giggles.

“They’re in all the books,” she clarified, only spurring on our laughter. Her brows came together in anger.

My giggles turned into those silent quaking convulsions that I couldn’t possibly control. Scott was holding up his hand as if to tell Shannon to stop while he laughed, and Austin clutched his stomach from the hilarity.

We’d stop for a minute only to glance at one or the other, and then we’d start back up again, garnering more glares from students near us.

Our laughing had to have gone on for at least a full five minutes before we were composed enough to talk about it.

“What?” Shannon finally asked in frustration.

Austin gave Shannon a very serious look while I stifled another wave of giggles. Scott had to excuse himself after a less than flattering snort.

“Vampires aren’t real,” Austin finally said.

“Well, you need a paranormal,” Shannon said, her voice both irritated and completely serious. “How about a werewolf?”

After that comment, it was my turn to excuse myself after a less than flattering snort.

Walking into my room, I find Envy sleeping in my bed, still bound. She looks like a goddess in slumber, and I hate to wake her, but there is no time for sleeping. And there it is again. Time. I don’t have time for anything. I can’t plan anything in this life. There is no time for killers. We live our lives on borrowed time. The minute I gave myself over to the beast and embraced my inner savage, I gave up the rights to live a normal life. Envy deserves a normal life. Seeing her look so peaceful gives me a sense of peace, but that’s just stolen time. I can never give her what she wants or needs.
But I’m going to take it.
I’m going to take her.
She’s mine.

Call me a selfish bastard. I don’t give a fuck. For the second time in my shit life, I’ve found peace again. Forgive me for wanting to keep that. I know it’s wrong and it’s twisted. But she’s mine. I won’t let her go.

Envy jumps when I nudge her foot, sitting upright in an instant. She glowers at me. “A sock. Really? Untie me,” she demands. I quickly unknot the sock and throw it to the floor. I drop my purchases onto the bed and nod my head at them. Her eyes stay
trained on me, and she doesn’t move. I nod my head at them again and throw her a grunt. Folding her arms, she raises a brow in question and still refuses to open the bags. All she did was draw my attention to her tits pushed against her arms. She may be my peace, but she also gives my beast all the power. When I’ve fucked a woman in the past, it’s been for me. The beast hasn’t found any pleasure. With Envy, he roars to mate; he prowls and puffs out his chest, trying to impress her. My beast wants her, but I can’t give him that control yet. I need to know she’s strong enough. I can’t speak to her in this state. If I do, then she will know how much I’m holding myself back. My cock is throbbing, desperate to be deep inside her. I want to fill her until she can’t be without me. I want her to breathe for me. When I accept her peace, I give up control of everything else. The beast could spring.

COVER REVEAL ~ Forsaken Control by Sapphire Knight

Title: Forsaken Control
Series: An Oath Keepers MC Novel
Author: Sapphire Knight

Genre: Contemporary, Erotica, Mafia, MC, Romantic Suspense
Release Date: Fall/Winter 2015

Ares.
I was suffocating till the club saved me.
I’ve sent the pain below, buried it and taken control of my life.
Now, I cause the pain. I make people break and beg for their lives, as I decide their fates.
It’s up to me as the Enforcer to protect my club by any means necessary.

She comes in to my life, like a stiff punch to the gut,
making me question everything I once believed.

She belongs to my brother and it goes against everything to take her from him.
However, I don’t want to just take her. No, I want them both.

Can my club handle it?
Can he?

Because she already loves me…

“London, I still can’t believe Cain let you drive his car.”

“Did I say he let me drive it?” She peers at me curiously.

“No fucking way! You took his car? Are you nuts?”

She shrugs, grinning, a shit eating grin and turns to walk into the grocery store. She’s lost her freaking mind. Cain is going to redden her ass like no tomorrow and I bet she’s anticipating just that.

“This right here is why we are such good friends, you know that right?” I chortle loudly, walking quickly to catch up with her long legs.

“Because we both like to steal cars?” Her icy blue irises sparkle and I giggle.

“No, but this is pretty epic. I wonder if he has figured it out yet.”

“Oh my phone will be blowing up like crazy when he does, don’t worry, we will know.”

“You don’t think he would come here on his bike do you? He still keeps his old bike at the club right?”

“Fuck my life. If you see him, hide. I need to have a cake or something in my hands when he sees me. I know I can distract him if I promise he can lick something off of me.”

“And I thought I was the kinky one.”

“Please bitch; you are sooo the kinky one! Speaking of, how is the deal working out with having Ares too?” She glances at me as she gets a shopping cart and starts walking toward the produce section in the grocery store.

“I don’t have Ares too.” I gaze at her a little confused.

I’m met with laughter and it sends a tingle down my spine.  I know that laugh.  They walk through the bar.  She has her arm laced through his, smiling happily.

“Brother!” He chortles, beaming a smile towards me, alongside hers.

“Yo.”

“Goin’ for a spin, you wanna come with?”

“No thanks brother, got some ass waiting.” I grumble and Shay giggles beside me, eating up the attention. I shrug her off my arm, sitting up and taking a long swallow of my whiskey.

“Alright man, have a good time.”

I nod, he turns to leave and I catch the glare she sends to Shay. I don’t know why but for some reason that little look makes me fucking stiff as a rod. My pants grow tight and I shift my legs, thinking about taking her, about having them both.

They make their way outside, the club door slamming in their leave. A small hand caresses my leg, rubbing over my hard cock a few times and I growl.

“You weren’t kidding, you really are ready. You want it here or should we go to your room?” Shay questions excitedly.

“No, ‘we’ ain’t headed nowhere, Shay. I wasn’t talking about you.”

“You’re joking.”

“Dead fuckin’ serious.”

Excerpt 1:

There was a time when I lived for the pack, when I would do anything to save my people. The white wolves were slowly reducing in number, and now everyone was desperate, struggling to make ends meet before we were wiped into extinction. I was twenty-four years old, and a daughter of the Northern pack alpha. It was my duty to continue my lineage. The only problem was, there were no other unmated alphas around other than my best friend, Sebastian, and the supreme douche, Kade Whitemore.

There was no way in hell I was going to alliance myself with that rat bastard. He was alpha of the Yukon pack, violent, and an overbearing ass who’d rather see me on my back with my legs spread open than being his equal. I’d rather die than be forced to be his mate for all eternity. Why couldn’t I mate with Sebastian? Thinking of fucking him gave me the willies, but anything was better than Kade.

Anger racked my body and I sat there, seething . . . until I felt him. He was coming for me; I could sense him drawing near. The closer we got to the meadow, the more I could smell Kade and his excitement—his lust. Hopefully, he could smell the rage and disgust coming from me.
Wolves mated for life; it was a sacred union. It wasn’t like a human marriage where you could end it by signing a piece of paper. Our unions weren’t something you did lightly. It was also not a decision I was going to let my parents make for me. The only way to escape would be to kill him, and the last thing I wanted to do was start a war between packs. There had to be another way.

Up ahead, in wolf form, Kade kept his stare dialed in on me. He was large—like all alpha males tended to be—but I wasn’t impressed. He could smell my indifference and in return growled low, challenging me. I glared straight at him, not backing down, nor lowering my head. No one would ever make me submit.

EXCERPT 2:

You’re disappointed I didn’t sleep with you last night?” Ryker asked.

“Not at all. I enjoy sleeping alone. I have more room.”

“You lie, angel. I could feel your disappointment this morning. All you have to do is tell me you want me and I’ll stay. I have to hear it.”

“You know I want you, Ryker. I’m sure you could figure that out the other night.”

My whole life, I never needed anyone to protect me, not even my parents. And when it came down to it, they didn’t do a very good job when it came to Kade. I knew I could survive on my own. Admitting I needed or even wanted someone was foreign to me. Saying the words out loud was near impossible.

“You showed me, but haven’t told me. Words can be powerful,” he replied.

Rolling my eyes, I got out of bed and threw on some clothes before going downstairs. He was in the kitchen with his back to me, shirt off, wearing only a pair of boxers. Holy fuck. “So if I take off my clothes and lay down on the table, you wouldn’t have sex with me?”

He chuckled. “Nope.”

“You sure?”

“Yep.” He continued on with cooking while I stood there, dumbfounded. I didn’t believe him for a second. His back stiffened when I took off my shirt and pants and climbed up on the table.

“I am so hungry,” I announced, waiting for him to turn around. When he did, he completely ignored me and sat down with his plate of food.

He pointed to the counter. “Your plate’s up there.”

“You’re seriously not going to look at me?”

He studied an invisible spot on the table and placed a piece of bacon in his mouth, crunching it slowly. “You’re not ready for that.”

I waited for him to sneak a peek but he didn’t. “Who’s the stubborn one now?”

He chuckled. “Still you, sweetheart. You have me beat.”

Excerpt

Josh winced around a mouthful of lukewarm beer. Time to go. He’d been nursing this beer for the last hour and his new book on Sir Isaac Newton was calling him. Age or boredom—who the hell knew?

He’d only come here for a quiet beer to unwind from his day. Granted, this particular bar was a shitty choice, but it was close to his condo, the beer was cold, and the bartender friendly.

A woman pushed through two slick broker types and fumbled a cell phone out of a pair of baggy GAP jeans. Her burgundy University of Western Ontario sweatshirt sneered like a rescue pound mongrel at the expensive Armanis flanking it.

Her brow puckered into a vicious frown.

She could be lost, or in disguise, but she did have the whole I-have-no-idea-exactly-how-hot-I-am thing going for her. A light lurking under a bushel, a diamond in the rough, a girl with an air of do me, bad boy she seemed oblivious to.

Not so clueless was every red-blooded male in her vicinity. More than one covert eye went her way.

Dark eyes, gleaming with intelligence and ringed by thick lashes, met his gaze.

A promising start—if he was looking for a pickup, which he wasn’t—but still…There was something familiar about this girl.

Diminutive and with her face devoid of makeup, she could have passed for fourteen. The air of determination marked her as older, however. Closer to his age, which meant old enough to drink, old enough to drive, and old enough for all sorts of interesting games.

Ten years ago, five even, he’d have cruised right over and worked his smolder. He knew better now.

The woman ducked her head and took a call. A mane of long wavy hair obscured her face.

The sort of hair a man liked to curl his fingers in.

Her gaze flickered up and over him. Angry eyes under a pair of lowered brows, giving him the eye so evil he almost looked over his shoulder for the true beneficiary.

Whoa!

Women, as a rule, didn’t look at him that way. Women dressed like bag ladies with … pencils? No kidding. It was definitely a couple of standard number twos holding her hair tightly against her head. Women like her almost never gave him the hairy eyeball.

His feelings might be a bruised.

Nope. Feelings intact but ego definitely grazed. She kept her hostile glare going. Those things could smoke a hole right through him.

Maybe she was gay. Josh winced behind his beer, glad he wasn’t voicing any of this out loud. He would sound like an egotistical prick. Okay, women didn’t often turn him down, but it happened. Sometimes.

Her glance shifted away. She was aware of him and doing her best not to show it.

He knew her. It hit him out of the blue and he stopped to think. She had the sort of face it was hard to forget. Not pretty, exactly, more compelling, and a blank canvas for every thought running through her head.

And right now she was not aiming happy thoughts in his direction.

She hunched over her phone to hear better.

The love ’em and leave ’em style of his early twenties hadn’t left many warm and fuzzy feelings behind him. Still, he came up blank. He was reasonably sure she wasn’t one of the bodies littering his youth, but this lady did not like him.

“Hey, Jo-osh?” His name was singsonged at him.

And speaking of his youth, right on cue. The timing nearly made him bust out laughing.

His mystery lady stuck her cute nose in the air. The amber glow from the lighted bar counter turned her skin to butter cream and picked out the tiniest golden freckles across her upturned nose,

The disdain rolled across the distance between them in waves.

“Hey, Josh, like, hello.” A pair of breasts intruded into his line of sight, right beneath his nose. He faced the owner of the pair.

There were three of them and all looking at him expectantly.

Ah, shit, here we go.

Over the newcomers’ shoulders the mystery lady shook her head in disgust. Her eyes raked over him and the posse in front of him and rolled.

Now, that was not entirely fair. He might even be getting a little pissed at her and her attitude. Girls like the trio facing him were knee deep in trendy Chicago bars, which this one happened to be. They were voracious hunters and he’d only been standing here minding his own business. She needn’t act like he’d encouraged them.

In the meanwhile, Bambi, Barbie, and Bubbles—or whatever—posed and primped in front of him. Their cheeks pink with a combination of alcohol and excitement.

His heart sank. He could almost script what was coming. It was his own damn fault, ultimately, but there had to come a point when the ghosts of the past went toward the fucking light or something.

“So, like, we were wondering…” Bambi/Barbie/Bubbles pursed her frosted mouth at him and stuck out her breasts.

As if he could have missed them the first time around.

Two and three were providing the flanking action, mirroring her movements and throwing in some freestyle hair tossing. “Hi, girls.” His skin prickled. Was he really going to have to do this now? Mystery lady with the judgmental eyes was going to get her money’s worth tonight.
