From New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones comes the fourth and final part in the sexy, suspenseful The Secret Life of Amy Bensen series—finally revealing the long-awaited wedding between Amy and Liam. But with the explosive secret they’re hiding, will their enemies ever let them live happily ever after?

For six long years I lived on the run, in fear and devastated by loss. That began to change the day I met Liam Stone, who is so much more than his money and power, and even the protection he has offered me. He is passion. He is friendship. He is love and happiness, and the man who made my enemies his own. And now with his help, the secret that drove me into hiding is buried, our enemies contained.
Liam and I can finally start our life and put this behind us. The nightmare is over. Unless…it’s not.

“Let’s make more good memories, baby.”
“Yes. Please,” I say, and my words land on his tongue as he kisses me tenderly. His mouth lingers over mine, my body coming alive, and I feel him breathing with me. Sometimes it feels as if he’s the only way I can breathe.
Liam shifts the spell between us to new places, turning me to face the massive four-poster bed that stirs wonderful, intimate memories, and I am most definitely ready to make more. He unzips my skirt and with deft fingers undresses me, removing one of the barriers between us. Slowly. Seductively. Somehow he never touches my skin but I feel him everywhere. My skin tingles the way my backside had when he smacked it. I know he’s teasing me, driving me to a place where there is only this man, this room, and me. I feel the energy shift and know that he’s no longer directly behind me, leaving me naked and untouched. The freedom to be vulnerable with this man, which I don’t dare with anyone else, is sexy in a thrilling way.
“Turn around,” he orders, and the rough, aroused quality of his voice tells me I affect him, too. I like that even when he’s in control, there’s a part of him that I set free.
I face him, finding him close, but not close enough. He shrugs out of his jacket and I’m mesmerized by him, his power, his grace. Every move he makes is controlled. Every action calculated. And I realize something I think I’ve known all along: we are the same. Both damaged. Both shattered in some deep way. Both defending ourselves from future wounds with our self-control.
He tugs his tie off and wraps it around his hand, silently promising me that soon I’ll be at his mercy. It’s not the first time he’s tied me up, and each encounter is different in a good way. Yet tonight feels like the first time—as if we really are starting a new chapter.
During our first encounter, he’d said, “Sometimes having a safe place to give it away is the best way to block everything else out. I’m asking you to let me show you that I’m that safe place.”
And Liam is my safe place.
“Amy.”
His voice commands my attention, and I look up to find I’ve missed the delicious moments leading up to him now being gloriously naked. My gaze lands on the “pi” tattoo on his belly, the 3.14 etched above a row of numbers in an upside-down triangle that is all about the infinite possibilities of life. It’s both thrilling and terrifying at times when I consider them with this man.
“Hold out your hands,” he orders, and it speaks volumes that I no longer hesitate to give myself fully to Liam.
He twists his tie around one of my wrists, and I think of the many ways he has helped me escape my past. But what about his past, which is just as etched in heartache as mine? He doesn’t talk about his mother, not since his sole emotional breakdown. Since then, he’s protected me—but who protects him?
He completes the knot binding my hands and pulls me to him. “And now, you’re mine to please and tease.”
“Yes, I am,” I agree.

Prologue

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words… Well, I’ve just received two pictures, so does that mean two thousand words?

I don’t know, but I do know I can’t think of two thousand words to describe how I feel right now: two thousand expletives maybe, but not two thousand actual, structural words.

I can tell you how it feels like my heart is breaking right now. What I thought I felt a couple of days ago, the heartache and the pain, is nothing like I’m feeling right now. My legs shake, and I collapse on the sofa in my living room.

I look back down at my phone and see that dreaded first picture that no one person wants to receive. The screen blurs, and I watch as a fat teardrop falls onto the glass screen. And then another until my phone becomes soaked with my tears. A sob hitches in my throat, getting caught for a second before it flows out of my mouth like it’s a natural sound coming from my body, when in actual fact; it’s not. Laughter and sarcastic remarks are what I’m used to coming out from my mouth, but not this. Not these horrible sounds that my body seems to instinctively know.

I feel the pain start to radiate through me, my chest burns and my heart is collapsing in on itself. I can feel pins and needles start to tingle from my toes all the way up to the tips of my fingers, and I feel goosebumps form on my arms, indicating the coldness running through me.

If it weren’t for the pounding in my head, and the sound of my blood rushing in my ears, I would have said that my body had frozen. If one’s blood freezes, then it doesn’t circulate through the body and the heart fails… Well, that’s what it feels like anyway; my heart was failing.

I’d never known heartbreak before. I had seen it, numerous times through friends and family, on TV and in movies, but I had never felt it. And if this is what it feels like, I never want to be in love with someone… but it was too late. I already was, and he had broken me into pieces. Teeny-tiny pieces. I don’t think even the best surgeon in the fucking universe would be able to put me back together again- sort of like Humpty Dumpty.

And all of this is because of one man. One man that I loved- that I thought loved me!

It was fourteen words that broke me two days ago. Two pictures worth two thousand words, that completely shattered me not even two minutes ago, and it was six words that I spoke out loud right now that seemed to echo around my living room and steel my resolve to forgo men in the future…

“Fuck you, Blake Walker. Fuck you.”

Ryder Diamond—the town’s golden boy—doesn’t have time for taking chances, let alone love. Against his better judgment, he lets his buddies set him up on a blind date with a girl who’s only passing through town. But temporary or not, Whitney James sets fire to desires he can’t control.

Before they know it, Ryder and Whitney are in a supply closet, drowning in lust. She’s only in town for the summer—what better way to spend it than in the arms of Mr. Perfect? Except, she’s wild and free, and he’s Mr. Stability. Which means he may as well be Mr. Wrong.

And her new job? It’s with Ryder’s sister.

Sex and the inability to keep their hands off each other are the only things they have in common. But this little hook-up has “disaster” written all over it…and the only way Ryder can save his reputation is by avoiding the sweet little firecracker who could ruin it all.

Excerpt

“So you’re from around here?” the sexy brunette asked as she eyed her shot and bent over the pool table again.
Jesus Christ, Ryder needed to get a grip. He couldn’t stare all night at her perfect ass in those insanely short shorts. Her shirt was tied up and gave flashes of her tight stomach, and Ryder had to take a deep breath. Maybe Bass was right. It’d been too long since he’d gotten laid.
“It’s not a hard question, big guy,” she said, snapping his thoughts out of the gutter and back to reality. Where were his manners?
“I’m sorry, sweetness. Run that by me again?” He stood straighter, gripping his pool cue as her big, chocolate eyes flashed up at him with a smile.
“I asked if you were from around here.” She hit the five in the side pocket and straightened.
Was he from around there? Technically, the lodge was in Diamond County, but it wasn’t zoned in the town of Diamond. He’d have to hold onto that technicality. If he so much as gave his last name, the connection would be made and the questions would start. Was he rich? Was he married? On and on.
For now, he wanted to take advantage of what Bass had said. This woman was passing through for just one night, and for one night, he didn’t have to be Ryder Diamond of the founding Diamonds.
“Not exactly,” he finally answered. It was the truth, basically.
She nodded and looked at him. Those roaming eyes gave off what he knew was a look of interest. And damn, it was a mighty fine look.
“You’re a little mysterious, cowboy,” she said, her east coast accent kicking up just a hair.
“Not a cowboy.” He drawled the last word and dropped the vowel just enough to gauge her reaction. Judging by the quick intake of air, and those high perfect breasts pressing tight against that shirt, he’d guess she was toiling with the idea of what getting down and dirty with a country boy was like. And he’d happily show her. “You wanna tell me where you’re from?”
She glanced away. “I move around a lot. Not really from anywhere.”
Huh. So she was playing the part of a mystery as much as he was.
She bent over the pool table again, even though it was his turn. He happily let her have the shot.
“How about this,” he said, and came to stand by her. “Why don’t we skip all the personal questions? You just tell me about yourself, however much or little you’d like.”
She cocked an eyebrow. “The more mysterious, the better?”
He smiled. “You got it.”
With her pool cue perfectly aligned, she winked at him, and then, without taking her eyes off him, she nailed the shot and sank the three ball. She was better than good, and that had him instantly hard. She was young, hot, and stirred his blood in a way it hadn’t been in a while. Maybe ever. Because with her lush mouth and hypnotic eyes, it was hard keeping his manners at the forefront, especially when she represented everything easy, fun, and wild.
And good Lord, he would make sure tonight fulfilled every fantasy he’d denied himself. Just like a diabetic sampling chocolate frosting…only once Ryder had a taste, he’d consume the whole damn cake.
She’s bad for you…
The quiet voice whispered that familiar warning. She was a temptation that he should be struggling to resist, yet every beat of his pulse told him that she’d be worth the sin. A night of lust to scratch this damn itch, then he could go back to his normal life tomorrow.
He’d been burned by a woman before. A woman like the one in front of him. Sexy, wild, and looking for fun, not for serious. And Ryder was a serious guy. Had to be. The second he wasn’t, he lost control and paid the consequences dearly.
Don’t get sucked in… Resist.
“I like personal details,” she said. “But not the boring kind. I don’t want to know where you’re from or what you do.”
Ryder nodded. He could get on board with that. “Details, so long as they’re not boring. And how do we go about that?”
She gave a wicked grin and ran her teeth over her bottom lip. He watched every damn slide, wishing to hell he could taste what she was tasting.

Breaking China

By

N.J Cole

China Perry has one goal and she will do anything to achieve it, including sell herself into human sex trafficking. She endures countless ruthless masters on her mission, undeterred by the pain and humiliation each of them causes. Determined to let nothing stop her, she’d turned her heart cold, never allowing herself to feel for any of these barbarians who had purchased her. That is, until she meets Master Richard.

Richard Pantero has been searching for something his entire life. Though he has money, servants, and women willing to do anything for him, his life is still empty. He’s lived the lifestyle and hasn’t thought twice about purchasing companionship. Each girl was different, yet the same until China entered his world like a comet changing everything he’d ever believed in.

In a love story for the ages, follow Richard and China on their journey. Can he find the peace he’s been searching for? Can she trust him enough to let down her walls and allow him to help her find what she craves the most? Is love enough?

Publisher’s note: This story is written in first person point of view similar to a screen play alternating between characters to give the authenticity of each character’s feelings. Warning: Intense bondage, aggressive sex, human trafficking.

China:

I’d been purchased. I knew what he expected. He expected me to beg and plead.

The others girls were crying. Sobs like, “Please, Master, please don’t hurt me,” filled the room.

Some slaves were trying to strike bargains. “If I suck you off, then please don’t fuck me.” I rolled my eyes. Could they really be so stupid as to believe these men would make bargains? They owned the girls now, plain and simple.

I heard footsteps then saw him. He held the key to my crate as well as the keys to my cuffs. I bit back the urge to look up at him and spit in his face or spout “fuck you,” both of which I would have done if not in shackles, if not at his mercy. Instead, I chose to say and do nothing.

I gazed into his eyes, and unlike the other Masters who had gotten pissed, he just smirked, and it made me think twice. He was handsome, and had he not just “purchased” me, I might have been attracted to him.

Richard:

My eyes remained locked with hers; no words had been said, but the struggle had begun. I felt a surge of energy wash through me. Could she finally be the one?

I continued staring her down; long moments passed before she averted her gaze.

Unshackling her arms, I knew the next round of her training would prove interesting. I had caught a subtle look of desire cross her features. Quick, but unmistakable. I slowly began to disrobe, allowing her to appraise my form as I had done hers. “Kitten, I offer you this chance to freely pay me homage.”

China:

He was different, I’d give him that. The others had choked me until I’d opened my mouth, inserted an O-ring gag and proceeded to fuck my face. He was asking me to do it voluntarily.

Pay him homage? Perhaps it would make my life less miserable.
I leaned forward, not wanting to pay special attention to his cock, which, from the quick glance I’d given it, was magnificent.

I bent as low as possible and kissed his feet. One soft kiss to the top of each foot. If he thought I was going to speak to him, he was mistaken. I’d been beaten until I couldn’t stand, but I was not going to acknowledge another human as my “master.”

Richard:

A faint frown covered my face, but my heart soared. Finally, a challenge; a pet whose devotion would have to be earned. Compassion would come in due time, now was time for the stick.

The proprietor offered me a crop, but I waved him off. I preferred my first chastisement to be flesh on flesh. My fingers stroking her hair, the silken strands wrapping around my hand. “Kitten, I see you don’t have the proper respect. Right now, you are nothing more than an object to me. In time, this could change, but for now you’re less than nothing.” My hand tightened as I lifted her to her feet by her hair.

China:

Oh, here we go again, I thought. I braced myself for his fist to my face. His hand in my hair raising me to my feet then lifting me slightly off of them. My toes skimmed the ground. He seemed just the same as the other masters now. I looked into his eyes. I wouldn’t let him beat me to death, though it did have a sense of peace in it. I had too much to live for. I glared at him.

He said I was nothing more than an object to him, and he was nothing more than an asshole to me. I wasn’t just a fuckhole. I wouldn’t let myself believe that. I would hold onto that little shred of self-respect that I had left.

Richard:

As my fingers traced her cheek, I lowered my head to her neck, inhaling deeply. I could see her trembling flesh. My teeth scraping along her shoulder, I bit down on the nape of her neck holding her in place. I released her hair, sliding my fingertips down her back. My nails dug into her flesh. Each of my pets had to bear my markings until they earned my collar. She began to squirm under me. The friction of her skin on mine was stimulating.

China:

He wasn’t like the others. They had reacted in anger, beating me to get out their frustration, or in the hopes of getting me to become a submissive slut.

He held my gaze until he lowered his head to my neck. I thought he was going to kiss me, but he inhaled deeply then, to my surprise, ran his mouth over my neck to my shoulder. I was even more shocked when he bit down. I knew he’d broken the skin. I bit my own tongue to keep from crying out in pain.

His mouth stayed there as his hands ran down my back, scratching my skin. Again, I knew he was marking me, tearing my flesh. I writhed to get away from his strong hands. I refused to give him the satisfaction of me begging him to stop. I knew he wouldn’t anyway. Why would I disgrace myself.

He pulled his head back and I could see my blood on his lower lip. I glared at him.

Richard:

I licked my lips; fury showed in her glare. Such anger was intoxicating; my loins stirred to life. If she were going to be so difficult, she would soon learn the consequences of her continued defiance.

I eased around her back, admiring the long scratches. Now all who looked at her would know she was mine. A crimson drop trickled down her arm. I knew she was in pain, but still she made no sound.

Well, if she wouldn’t scream her submission, she would whimper it. I ran my palms over her swaying breasts, cupping them. My thumbs ran circles over her nipples. Her body betrayed her as they stiffened under my touch. The heel of my hand pressed against her belly as it moved down, my thick shaft rubbing along her inner thighs. I licked her ear. “You will give in to me, Kitten.”

My father was most certainly NOT an innocent man. As the leader of the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club, he was guilty of many things. But he died for a crime that he didn’t commit, framed by an enemy within who then stole his club and everything he had ever worked to protect.

When Dornan Ross framed my father, he set into motion a series of events that could never be undone. My father was murdered by Dornan Ross and his sons when I was fifteen years old.

I’ve just turned twenty-one, and I’m out for blood. I’m out for revenge.

But I didn’t expect to fall for Jase, the youngest brother in the club.

Excerpt

Confucius said, “Before embarking upon a journey of revenge, dig two graves.”
I planned to dig seven.

Sometimes I don’t think about it for hours at a time. Sometimes, a whole day will pass, and it’ll be there, under the surface, burning my insides with the brutality of its truth. My truth.

And I’ll get home from my dead-end job in this dead-end fucking town in the asshole of Nebraska, and I’ll have almost made it through a whole day of not thinking about it, about my father and Dornan Ross and his sons.
But then I’ll do something without thinking, like undress to go to bed, or slide under the covers of my bed. And I’ll see the marks they branded on my right hip – seven horizontal lines, each stacked on top of each other, made by casting the blunt edge of a butcher’s knife into fire and then pressing it into my flesh. A line for Dornan Ross and a line for each of his six older sons. Notches on a bedpost. Scarred for a lifetime so that I can never forget. Some are thicker than others, some short and others long, but each one a devastating reminder of everything they took from me that night.

Even if I stay in my stale clothes to avoid seeing my scars, I still can’t escape them. I never sleep well. I toss and turn, fitful and drenched in sweat, awakening from nightmares where they find me and turn the knife to the sharp side. Where they don’t just brand me – they cut me until I am dead, so I won’t talk to the police. I know things, see. I know things that the police don’t, about purchased alibis and body disposal spots, about too many girls who went missing and too many men who kept too many secrets.

I used to wish every day and every night to forget about my fathers murderer and what he did to us. Not anymore. Now I want to remember every tiny detail so that I can exact my revenge.

Tomorrow is different. Tomorrow is my twenty-first birthday, the day I gain access to my secret inheritance. The several hundred thousand that my father managed to hide before Dornan framed him for the murder of a policeman and his family, a crime that Dornan and his eldest son committed as retribution for a drug bust that almost wiped the club out. It might be dirty money – my father wasn’t above money laundering and drug manufacturing – but it was his money. Dornan managed to seize control of the rest when he enacted his devastating betrayal.

Tomorrow is truly my birthday, for I will become another person. Today my name is Juliette Portland, but tomorrow I will wake up as someone else entirely.

Someone who will bring Dornan Ross and the Gypsy Brothers Motorcycle Club to their knees.

DORNAN

I see the panic in her eyes, and it makes my cock throb.
Yes. It’s my turn now, you silly little girl.
I’m going to twist her diabolical fucking soul until she’s completely at my mercy, knees on the ground and mouth on my cock, sucking and begging for forgiveness all at the same time. There’s going to be so much more blood in our future, and it’s going to be beautiful.
“I know you think this is going to be bad,” I say, pleasure and rage sizzling in my veins, “but however bad you think this is going to be, it’s going to be So.Much.Worse.”

JASE

There’s something to be said about a person who’s been put in hell and doesn’t lose themselves.
But what if you find yourself there instead?
“Say it,” Chad said, sliding one finger inside Rails so that she flinched. Even with the drugs, the rough way he was poking and prodding at her must have hurt. “Say you’re no better than us. Say you’re one of us and I’ll let her go.” I looked to Rails, but she wasn’t even there. Whatever drug was in her bloodstream, it looked effective.
“I’m no better than you.” I ground out.
“And?” Chad prompted, snaking his tongue out to lick Raelene’s earlobe.
I shuddered.
“And I’m one of you.”
“One of what?”
“A fucking Gypsy Brother!” I screamed.
Normal men don’t want to hurt the women they love.
Normal men don’t have a darkness inside them.
But I’m not normal. I never was. I might’ve been patched in by force, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’ve got GYPSY BROTHERS forever etched into my skin, and their blood running through my veins.
I might look like a good person on the surface, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’m Dornan Ross’s son.

ELLIOT

Why’d we have to meet the way we did, in a goddamn nightmare? She was so beautiful and passionate in the moments her demons weren’t dragging her beneath the murky waters and drowning her. Selfishly, I wished she would try harder to be that girl who laughed and said funny things, dazzling me with her smile, instead of the girl who held my gun in her lap and willed herself not to eat it.
“It’s okay, Elliot,” Juliette said, trailing her hand over my cheek. “I’d leave me too, if I could.”
I swallowed back all the words I’d never be able to say to her.

He waved a hand in front of her face, but she didn’t blink. The lights are on, but no one’s home.

“Carly, my angel,” he whispered and cupped her cheek into his palm. He revealed in the silkiness and warmth of her skin. Still, she didn’t react. She was almost…a zombie.

His own body jerked in reaction to the fear she was emanating. She was clearly sleepwalking and in the throes of one hell of a nightmare, yet she didn’t cry out any longer. It was all now playing out inside her mind.

“Charlotte, see me,” he implored.

Her lips twitched at the mention of her real name.

“See me,” he repeated.

Suddenly, her body gave way and she collapsed. Catching her, he lifted her into his arms and carried her to the bed. As he laid her down, her breathing became ragged. He placed a hand over her heart as it raced, and passed healing calmness through his hand, feeling the energy pulsate against her skin. Beneath his hand, he would feel her heartbeat slow to a normal rhythm.

“Daniel?” Her voice was mere caress.

“I’m here, my angel. You’re having a nightmare. You’re frightened. It’s okay now, I’m here, and I will never leave you,” he promised.

“Everyone leaves, Daniel. You can’t understand, you can’t…” Her body started to tremble.

He climbed onto the bed and straddled her body. Leaning close to her face, he said, “Carly, let go of your fear. I can take it. Let go and see me,” he commanded.

Her breath came out in a whoosh, and a wall of fear and resistance hit him like a blow from above. It wasn’t exactly painful, more startling than anything else.

His vision flip-flopped, and he could see an image from inside her mind of two souls forever entwined as the result of one act. It made perfect sense. She was reliving the day their souls became one. The day of the fire.

He then saw black, suffocating water. She was reliving her own death, as well.

As the visions left him, he was consumed with the mishmash of fear, loneliness, and resistance within her.

He had to make her understand that it was over. “I will never leave you, Carly. That is my promise to you,” he insisted.

A flicker of life ignited in her eyes. Her hands came up to his face, and to Daniel’s surprise, tears bubbled from his own eyes. He was releasing the pain and fear he had absorbed from his beloved.

“I’m so sorry, Daniel, so sorry,” she murmured.

“There’s nothing to be sorry for, my love. It’s over. It’s time to move forward now.”

“You don’t understand what I am, Daniel.”

“I do understand, Carly. I am what you are. See me for what I am.”

In his mind, he could see the moving clockwork gears of her thoughts once again as she tried to process what he was telling her to be true.

“Just accept it, and let’s move forward.”

She drew his face to hers and her lips parted beneath his. Time blurred and he drank in the essence of his Carly. Her soft, barely covered curves molded themselves against his the hard planes of his body. Her hands were under his t-shirt, her fingers stroking him.

If he pressed on, he knew she wouldn’t refuse him. But in her vulnerable state, he wouldn’t let anything progress further that night. Carly needed time to process everything that happened. There was plenty of time to pursue a physical relationship. They weren’t going any where…he hoped.

“Well, lucky for you, I’m still a loser and didn’t find anything better to do last night. I made you guys a lasagna and mint mocha cookies.” I beam. I love outdoing myself for them. “Seriously?” Danny pumps his hand in the air. “I fucking love you!”

“Dude! Watch your mouth!” Thankfully, the family has already left. Caleb doesn’t seem fazed by the outburst, but I can see he’s holding back a laugh.

“All right guys, the lasagna is in the back cooler. Just throw it in the oven to reheat while the girls and I finish up.”

I make my way over to Caleb’s table. “Anything else for you today, Mr. Matthews?”

“Your cooks don’t cook for the staff?”

I shrug. “Um, well, after a while we all get bored of the food here so we try to make something different.”

“Yeah, I can see sticking to the ‘usual’ could get a bit boring.” He chuckles.

I shrug. “Some people just know what they want.”

“Right you are, Miss Hannah.” Caleb licks his lips lightly. “I’ll take the check.”

I slip the pleather check book out of my apron and place it on the table, but he has his credit card on it before I can move my hand away and grazes my knuckles with his fingertips.

I feel my cheeks burn. “Uh, I’ll be right back.” I walk back to the terminal, where Lizzy is counting out her tickets.

She eyes me. “Hmmm, that’s an interesting grin you have, Han.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” But I know my continuing blush is giving me away. She sticks her tongue out, and I roll my eyes overdramatically.

Caleb stands as I place his check back on the table. He’s much taller than I expected, and his presence causes my heart to pound in my ears.

“Until next time, Miss Hannah.”

I gulp. “Until next time, Mr. Matthews.”

After Caleb leaves, we lock the doors for the day. Cleaning off the table, I pick up the check book and see the corner of a napkin sticking out. I open the book to find a twenty-dollar tip and a napkin with a note: Maybe next time I’ll ask you for a cookie.

Fuck you.”

Simon didn’t want to know what the future held, and he didn’t want to acknowledge the past. At this exact moment, however, he wanted Anna Marie from Wisconsin, an all-American blue-eyed, blonde pharmaceutical sales representative looking to experience everything life offered. During dinner, he’d given her his usual warning that people weren’t always what they seemed, but she’d ignored his words and stroked the length of his leg with her foot, requesting some private time with him.
“Listen love, I think we should call it a night. I’m leaving Bermuda soon and so are you, and, at this point, I don’t have room in my life for a relationship.”
She laughed and reached across the table for his hand. “I’m looking for company for one night only. I have to return home tomorrow, and so far, I have nothing to take home with me but memories of business meetings and a tour of the local hospital.”
She caressed the top of his hand and weaved her fingers between his. How could he turn down such an offer?
He lifted her fingers to his lips and kissed them. His gaze rested on full lips painted blood red to entice and seduce. “I’m sure I can provide you with some far more interesting memories to take home.”
“Good.” She stood up and encouraged him to the door of the restaurant. “I bet I can leave you with a few as well.”
Once they were alone in his hotel suite, Anna Marie poured them each some champagne, bending over enough to reveal an amazing pair of breasts about to cascade out of her floral sundress. Biting her bottom lip, she lifted her gaze to peek at him through golden hair. Seductive energy swirled around her. Simon read her intentions like the cover of a tabloid.
He stood on his balcony. The view overlooked Castle Harbor at night, but he faced his dinner companion who continued to pour them each a drink. Dinner had dragged for two hours, and he was ready for his dessert. Her eyes lifted from her task. Her smile reminded him of the carefree and happy life he’d enjoyed before Nicola had died in a blaze of heroism.
“This is the most luxurious hotel I’ve ever seen. It’s four stars up from the hotel I’m staying in.” Looking like a child in a candy store, she’d probably sacrifice everything to live in Simon’s world. She had no idea how costly it could be. And he’d never allow her to find out.
“I’m glad you like it.” He sat on the couch and stretched his legs under the bleached wood and glass coffee table.
“Wisconsin is beautiful in April, but there’s no ocean breezes like here. Even the smell of the water is nice. Bermuda must be totally different from England, too.”
“True.”
“Have you ever met anyone with a title?”
Besides his father and half brother? “No. The British aristocracy doesn’t lower itself into my social circles.”
She laughed and whipped her hair over her shoulder. “I love the royal family. The dresses. The hats. It’s all so glamorous.”
“Come here.” He had the perfect cure for her tiresome prattle.
She carried the crystal flutes to the couch and handed him one. He placed it on the table and focused his attention on her. Her blue eyes could swallow a man whole and keep him hypnotized. He had difficulty looking away.
She sipped the champagne too fast, without seeming to enjoy the taste, only the exclusivity of the beverage. “I haven’t had champagne since my sister’s wedding. I usually drink cosmos. What do you usually drink?”
“Vodka.”
“Most of the guys I know drink beer.” She took a few more sips. Her eyelashes fluttered, and her tongue peeked out of those perfect lips to lick a leftover drop of her beverage.
Simon reached his conversational limit. He took her glass and placed it next to his. Her smile became demure, but seductive. She placed her hand on his leg, both an offer and an acceptance. That was all he needed. Tonight, nothing mattered but the beautiful woman in his arms. He pulled her toward him, his hand caressing her back. Straight blonde hair fell across her shoulders. He brushed it aside in order to taste the salty air flavoring her neck. A sigh escaped her lips. He wanted all of her, all night.
When he pulled the straps of her dress down and claimed an exposed breast, she sighed again and spurred him on by brushing her fingers though his hair. His thumb played with her nipple until her sighs turned into moans. Soon he had her sprawled across the couch, topless and begging for attention. He complied with her wishes and provided her with pleasures small town farm boys had probably never shown her.
His kisses moved up her neck, stopping to nibble her earlobe. She turned toward him, demanding his attention on her soft, full lips. His mouth feathered over hers until she parted her lips, and their tongues met. She tasted like champagne mixed with nuts. Almonds. Bitter almonds. Shit.
Her eyes widened, and she gasped for breath. He pulled away just before her body began to convulse. Five to ten minutes since the last sip—someone must have spiked the hell out of the champagne for the poison to hit her so quickly. It didn’t help that she’d spent dinner flirting instead of eating. She had nothing in her system to stop the cyanide from killing her.
Simon turned away from Anna Marie and spit out her saliva. He wiped his tongue on his shirt and then spit again. He’d be fine, but she wouldn’t be. He knelt next to the couch and brushed her hair back. Her body rocked, and he held her steady by her shoulders, whispering stupid nothings, but the horror reflected in her eyes didn’t subside. Her convulsions had slowed, and tears fell fast down her cheeks. She would die in the arms of a stranger who didn’t know her, love her, or have the capacity to mourn for her.
Anger rushed through him. Another woman dies because of me. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”
Struggling to breathe, she stared at him as though he was a monster, until her eyes shut, and she faded away from Bermuda and the glamorous life she’d never have.
No one was supposed to know his location. He’d stayed hidden for the past eight months. It was time to relocate and hide somewhere new.
The next few hours involved moving her body to a vacant room in his hotel. The task was easily handled with the help of a laundry cart and knowledge of the security cameras. He cleaned off the champagne bottle and left it by her side for the local authorities to play with.
When he returned to his suite, he had a visitor. An unexpected and unwanted visitor.
“Simon Dunn. On a stakeout, are you?” Dressed in white trousers and a pink polo shirt, Tucker Magee looked like a pretty boy on a modeling assignment instead of a spineless intelligence officer.
“I’m on vacation.”
“For eight months?”
“How the hell did you find me, Tucker?”
“The problem with shagging every sexy woman on the island is their love of social media. The boys at headquarters have had the facial recognition program scanning for you for months.”
“Glad to know the vast resources of the Secret Intelligence Service are used for employee retention instead of actually protecting the commonwealth. You could simply offer more vacation time and a better benefits package.”
Tucker glanced at the back of his hand. No doubt he’d just had a manicure and was admiring the handiwork. His image had always taken priority over his actual job requirements. “Her name was Sarah, here on break from university.”
“I don’t remember her.”
“A picture of her in a bar with her friends showed your ugly face in the background. They tagged you ‘hot guy.'” He smiled, the snotty prat.
“What the hell do you want?”
“My assignment is to bring you back to London.”
“I’m not ready.”
Tucker’s eyebrows rose. “Word on the street is you killed Luc Perrault after he stole away your latest piece of ass. They even say you snuffed Nicola in a rage of passion.”
His accusation fueled Simon’s anger. “I didn’t kill her.”
“Doesn’t matter. The rumor will increase your influence brokering arms deals.
Everyone’s going to mind you now that you’re a known murderer, and that makes it even more important that you return to your post.”
“I’m done.”
“I don’t think you understand your options. Come back immediately or stay here and face a murder conviction.” Tucker tapped his fingers together beneath his chin and grinned. “Choose wisely.”
Simon’s heart accelerated to full speed, drugged by adrenaline and fury. The bastard had framed him, killing a beautiful someone in order to punish him for leaving a job that slowly burned away his soul. He stormed over to Tucker’s chair, intent on ripping his heart out. Before he reached him, Tucker pulled out his revolver and pointed it directly at Simon’s crotch. His eyes narrowed, and he waved Simon back with the barrel of the gun.
“What makes you so sure I won’t disappear again?” Simon asked.
“You’ve always hated collateral damage. It’s your biggest weakness. We don’t have time to insert anyone else into the game right now. Return to work or we’ll create a bloody trail behind you so deep you’ll drown in it.” Tucker rose from his seat and strode to the door. “I expect to see you back in your flat by tomorrow.” He left the room without looking back.

Excerpt:

He knew better—knew better—than to ask, but the words jumped out of this mouth anyway. “Then what’s the matter?”

Sabrina slumped down into the leather sofa and held her hands over her face. “I’ve flown for fourteen hours. I was so intent on getting here. I’m sorry—I’m just tired.”

After flying all that way, of course she was tired. And a teary-eyed female got him every time. His little sister knew just how to push his buttons—she could cry on cue. This woman was no different. Was she worried about where she’d stay the night? “I can find a room for you,” he blurted without thinking, anything to make her stop crying. “You can’t have one of the paying guest rooms, but my brother Ethan only lives here part-time. You can have his room. Besides, he’s not here right now. He’s guiding a group of hunters.”

“I know I’m supposed to be here.” She wiped a tear off her cheek. “I get these feelings sometimes. My best friend Melody says I have bits, moments—she says, of psychic abilities.”

Zak held up his hands. “Whoa…whoa.”

He didn’t want her crying, but he didn’t want a nutcase on his hands either. He wasn’t surprised she was from California. Lots of wackos lived there. Especially in southern California. “I’ll make sure you have a room.” Just for tonight.

A little waif of a woman from California, up here without a reservation, wearing flip-flops—no, she wasn’t crazy at all. He nodded his head as though offering some kind of reassurance to her. Oh yes, of course you made the right choice flying to rural Alaska with no reservations and no decent clothing.

“If your brother won’t mind, I’ll gladly accept his room.” The lines across her damp brow appeared a little less stressed.

Ethan could be gone for a week, maybe longer, but Zak was planning to send her on the next plane back to La-La Land. “It’s not a problem. He won’t mind.”
