At first she doesn’t even know I’m there, and I have the pleasure of seeing her lying back, her eyes closed, one leg bent up and peeking out from the bubbles. And damn those fucking bubbles, they’re covering everything else.

The universe is doing everything it can to prevent me from seeing my wife naked. I would laugh at that fact if it didn’t bug me so damn much. I’m pretty sure karma is slapping me in the face for insulting her so many times, and karma is a bitch who has no fucks to give about my blue balls.

Her eyes suddenly snap open and she jumps when she sees me, water splashing around her.

“Tally, you scared the shit out of me. Why are you creeping around?” She crosses her arms over her chest and a few bubbles float up in the air. I love that my childhood nickname just slipped out of her mouth without her even realizing it. It sounded so intimate on her lips that I want to hear her say it again and again.

“I wasn’t creeping; I just walked in. Should I wear a bell around my neck like the Princess?” I lean against the doorframe and gaze at her in the candlelight, her skin dewy from the moist heat, and I can’t understand why she doesn’t want me in that tub with her.

“What are you doing in here?”

I cross the room and kneel down next to the tub, taking in the way her eyes shift to my naked chest.

“I wanted to see your bath bomb in action.” My eyes travel languidly down the length of her in the tub and catch glimpses of pink water under the bubbles.

“This one is actually a bubble bomb. See the bubbles?” She lifts her hand and blows the bubbles up over my head.

I grab her hand and bring it to my lips. “I see that. Pink water, too. Very pretty.” I close my eyes as I kiss her hand, tasting the sweet water on her. “What flavor are you tonight? It’s yummy.”

She swallows and I can feel her hand trembling ever so slightly in mine. “It’s cotton candy.”

I nod my approval. “I like it. A lot.”

She shifts in the water, lowering the leg that was up and raising the other, giving me a quick glimpse of her thigh as she does so.

“Do you think about me when you’re in here?” I ask her, releasing her hand so I can dip my fingers into the warm water.

“I think about you all the time.”

My heart does a funny lurch I’m pretty sure it ain’t never done before. “Well, that’s just about the best thing I’ve ever heard.”

I let my hand slide farther into the water until it’s gliding over her outer thigh under the bubbles. “The water feels slippery,” I comment. “So does your skin.”

“It’s from the oils.”

Stretching my other arm out along the edge of the tub, I lean toward her face. “I like how it feels. I should be in there with you, all slippery and wet.”

“You’re too big,” she murmurs, locking her eyes on to mine.

Laughing, I kiss her vanilla flavored lips. “I’m gonna ignore that big comment, baby.”

She smiles against my mouth. “You’re so bad.”

“I know… So, I’m going to have to do this the hard way, then. Since I can’t get in there.” I slide my hand farther down her leg, over her knee to her calf, squeezing gently.

“Do what?”

“Give you your first orgasm.”

A small gasp of surprise comes out of her, and a seductive little grin graces her lips. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I’ve had orgasms before.”

“Not from me.” I rub my nose along hers, feeling her breath against my face. “And that’s gonna change right now, Mrs. Valentine.”

I cup the back of her head with one hand and press my mouth to hers, licking her lips while slowly dragging my other hand up the inside of her leg beneath the water to finally brush my fingers gently across her lower lips. I silently curse the water for not letting me feel her wetness.

Her mouth opens to mine and I delve my tongue inside, tasting the heat of her breath and catching the sweet moan she lets out when I push my finger into her warmth. Her thighs part and her hand comes up out of the water to caress my cheek as I let my hand own her, my thumb rubbing her pulsing clit while I slip my fingers in and out of her. My cock throbs like mad in my shorts, begging to get into her. Holy fuck, is she tight. Three years of no sex is very, very good.

Her thighs squeeze my hand and she grasps the side of my neck, her breath panting against my mouth, and I know she’s there already. I really want to drag this out, tease her and make her crazy, but that seems cruel right now when she’s writhing her hot little core all over my hand and devouring my lips. I like little horny Asia. A lot.

I want to pull her out of the tub and take her right here on the floor and put an end to this madness, but I’m hell-bent on sticking to my promise to her, even if my dick hates me.

Her walls clench and drench around my swirling fingers up inside her, while the rest of her body arches up, pressing against me, her muscles tightening and quivering. I kiss her softly as she recovers from the first of many sexual escapades I have planned for her now that the doors have been opened, so to speak.

“Who’s my girl?” I whisper against her ear, moving my hand up to caress her stomach.

“Me,” she answers breathlessly

“That’s right.”

My girl. The last thing I thought I would ever want, and now, all I could ever want.

COVER REVEAL ~ It Started In Texas by MB Feeney

IT STARTED IN TEXAS

Name of cover designerThe Graphics Shed

Official genre of book – Contemporary Romance

Leaving the familiar comfort of her UK home for a weekend in Texas is one of the craziest things Charlotte Evans has ever done. Celebrating her birthday with friends is the highlight of her year until she bumps into her favourite rock star, literally.

Gage Weston is used to having women fall over themselves at his feet … A rock star, an actor, he’s got his fair share of female attention, but what is it about the Brit that grabs his attention from the moment they meet?

Communication issues and crossed wires plague them as they try to work out what is going on with them across thousands of miles. Crazy friends and distance issues aside; can a relationship work, or is it a simple case of ‘a girl in every town’?

“Sounds awesome. I better let you get back to your friends. Mine will come hunting soon if I don’t hurry back; it’s my turn to buy the drinks.” He held out his hand again. “I’m Gage.” I almost burst out laughing as I shook his hand, trying to ignore the warm feeling spreading up my arm.

“Charlotte, it’s nice to meet you.”

“You too. Sorry I knocked you on your ass, I hope it doesn’t bruise.” Oh my God, he actually fucking winked at me. Dare I?

“Maybe I’ll get you to check it later.” Over his shoulder, I could see some of the girls goggling at me trying to listen to what was being said. “The troops have come to rescue me. I gotta go.” With more than a hint of regret, I withdrew my hand from his once again.

“Yeah, see ya.” He looked over his shoulder at everyone watching us before disappearing into the gents. I took a deep breath and prepared myself for the Spanish Inquisition. Walking towards the girls, a huge grin on my face. As soon as I was within grabbing distance, they did just that and frogmarched me back to our table.

I was in the middle of my non-story when I felt a tap on my shoulder. Turning around, I was assaulted by those eyes once more as they looked directly into my own.

“You dropped your cell phone.” Sure enough, in his hand was my mobile. I internally groaned as I remembered the wallpaper was a picture of him from a recent magazine interview that had been posted online.

“Thanks. I didn’t even miss it.” Our fingers touched with a sizzle, or so I thought. It could have been the booze.

“No worries Darlin’. How’s the ass?” I saw mouths drop open around me at the blunt and flirtatious question.

“Its fine thanks. I’ll keep my eye on it.” My words made him grin again. I could get used to seeing that smile up close some more.

“Nice job if you can get it.” He flashed us all another wide smile and then sauntered back to his band mates.

Blurb:

After faced with crippling loss, a heartbroken raven must find her wings again…

Treasure hunters are trained to find things, but all Morgana has known is loss. When someone she loves dies because she can’t protect them, she shies away from the world, too afraid to let anyone else get close. That won’t last long because ravens aren’t ones to pass up on shiny things.

Cody has never really felt accepted. He’s a coyote shifter of Native American heritage, but he gets his looks from his Scandinavian mother, unlike his siblings and the rest of his people. That makes him all the more dedicated when what seemed like a freak tornado becomes something much scarier.

When Cody realizes that his family’s powerful talisman has slips into the wrong hands, he desperately needs help. But he never imagined he’d be fall head over heels for the beautiful, if not, mysterious treasure hunter. Morgana will need to let go of being hurt again if they have any hope of saving not only each other, but also the small town that they both love from disaster.

Excerpt:

Wind caressed my midnight black feathers as I sailed through the early evening sky. Flying had always been a welcome reprieve, an escape from the everyday life of walking on two legs. Most people in the world only dreamed of this gift I’d been granted, but it didn’t give me that much freedom from life’s sorrows. Perhaps that was just as well.
My line of work demanded more from me than the average human’s physique could handle. That was why my peers regarded me as the best of the best.
As a treasure hunter, people expected me to explore mystical ruins and dodge huge boulders, but my main task was to always be on the lookout for stunning riches that might interest my wealthy clients. What set me apart from the rest was being a Raven shifter. That gave me the ability to get in and out of ancient, mythical locales more quickly and safely than most.
Clients came to me with all sorts of requests. Due to my popularity, I could choose the jobs I wanted and who I wanted to work for, something the few fellow treasure hunters I’d met could only dream of. When we got together, they always asked for my secrets—either to my face or behind my back—but I wasn’t willing to share the knowledge of my abilities with them.
Only one person, aside from my parents, had ever gotten close enough to see the true me, and he’d died because I couldn’t save him when he needed me the most.
How could I truly be happy with a life spent forever alone, regardless of the mystery and adventure my career afforded me?
Loneliness ached like a gaping hole in my chest. Whatever life I’d known before had dimmed the light, and I merely trudged through the shades of grey with my bruised heart.
Ezra Phillips had been the last person I’d allowed to get close to me. He’d crept past the walls I’d erected around my heart after my parents died and left me all alone in the world. I regretted his death every single day. Life with him had been an exciting journey. We were hunting a rare gem with supposed magical properties together, and I’d tried to convince him that I should go alone since he was only human. The job was dangerous, even for me. He had a way with words and convinced me to let him come along. I mistakenly believed we were indestructible together. Neither of us had been to South America before, and now I never wanted to go back.
I was all alone again. Whoever said it was better to have loved and lost had obviously never felt this kind of gut-wrenching pain.
If anything had come from my relationship with Ezra, it was a determination to harden my heart that much more. Never again would I let someone in. More pain and loss would be too much to bear. Besides, I had a career in shambles that needed to be rebuilt.
Shaking away my destructive thoughts, I swept my gaze over my surroundings, dragging myself back to the here and now. Breathtaking oranges, reds, and yellows spread out beneath me, helping me remember why I’d chosen Woodland Creek, Indiana as my new home. I’d never been a small-town girl, but that didn’t matter much. After Ezra’s death, I drew more into myself, and the solitude suited me now.
Above the treetops, the air carried the clean scent of ozone mixed with pine. The strong pull from the ley-lines had called me here like a mystical artery pumping with magic, very much alive with raw, untapped energy churning below the ground. For wizards, it made spellcasting easier, but for the shifters I knew of, it acted like a beacon, calling us together.
Through the thick canopy, I caught sight of something shiny on the forest floor below. I’d flown this path many times on my way home, and rarely had I seen any hikers in this area. Could this object be something valuable? The raven in me wanted to investigate—she liked shiny things—but my human side prepared for disappointment.
Maybe I’d become more jaded than I’d realized, if not downright pessimistic.
Swooping toward the ground, we splayed our wings wide and slowed our descent to get a better look. Just an average section of Running Deer National Forest. It’s only distinguishing feature was a large ring boulders. No one was around, and the area was clear of camping gear and human supplies.
I perched on a sturdy tree limb, and it groaned a little under our weight. While most ravens were about three pounds, I was closer to thirty, approximately the size of a cinereous vulture. Not conspicuous at all, right? But most people didn’t look too hard at me. They keep their eyes at ground level, not paying much attention to what goes on above their heads.
The shiny object below beckoned my raven closer, but I couldn’t be sure this wasn’t some kind of trap. Call me paranoid, but that was the sort of thinking that kept me alive. I didn’t see anyone else nearby, though: people, animals, or those in-between. The longer I sat there, the more I felt a heaviness in the air, as if someone had recently thrown a lot of magic around. The sensation nearly made me decide to fly away, but my raven krawed at me. She thought I was acting like a coward, and that was definitely not me. The thought of the glimmer had entered into her mind, and once she was set on something, there was only one way to satisfy her curiosity.

EXCERPT & NEW COVER – Vegas Love by Jillian Dodd

Excerpt

Tears threaten to fall, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to stand here and feel sorry for myself. And even though Cade’s lecture about getting my life together is screaming in my brain, I can’t help it. I can’t deal with all this.
I stomp off the dance floor, stopping to grab a bottle of champagne and one of the cashmere throw wedding favors.
I’m just rounding the corner, making my escape, when I hear a voice say, “Hey, Hotass, where you sneaking off to?”
I stop and spin around, the sudden movement almost causing me to fall. I grip the bottle tighter. Can’t spill the champagne. I’m going to need every ounce to drown my sorrows.
The guy grabs my elbow, keeping me upright.
I stare at his big hand, then follow his arm up to a broad shoulder and a face so handsome it makes my heart ache.
“You saved the champagne,” I tell him. He grins, the smile changing his face from handsome to devastatingly hot. “You look sorta familiar. Have we met before?”
“Probably in your dreams.”
I touch his light brown hair, which is flipped up in the front. “You have cute hair.”
“I have a lot of other cute parts,” he flirts. “Wanna feel them all?”
I chuckle. “You’re funny. Did you really just call me Hotass?”
“I call ’em as I see ’em.”
I lean back to check out my ass, which makes me sort of dizzy.
He grabs me again, this time planting his hands firmly on my hips.
“I bet you’re good in bed,” I blurt out, imagining those strong hands guiding me on top of him.
“Only one way to find out,” he says with a smirk.
What is with that smirk? Is he as fucking hot as I think he is?
“I’m gonna need to be drunker for that,” I say.
“Way to kill my ego—and my hard on,” he says seriously.
I lock eyes with him. “You’re teasing me.”
“Maybe a little.” He grins again. “So, back to my first question. Where are you sneaking off to?”
“Not sure. Over here somewhere—away from everyone.”
“Not in the mood to party?” He grabs the champagne bottle and takes a slug.
“Let’s suffice it to say I’ve had a rough week. Do you know why I’ve had a bad week?” I ask. I mean, I’m pretty sure everyone in the world has seen the Ashlyn Roberts sex tape, despite Cade’s efforts to get it taken down.
“Honestly, no,” he says.
“Really? Do you not get on the Internet?”
“Usually I do, just not this week.”
“Why not this week?” I hold my hand up in front of his cute face. “Wait, don’t answer that. Just come with me.”
“Where are you going?”
“I don’t know. That’s the problem—with my whole life, really.” I give him a pout and look into his warm, brown eyes. He has the kind of eyes that make me want to curl up in his lap and let him pet me.
He touches my nose. “If you’re leading, Hotass, then I’m following. If only for the view.”
“You can walk next to me.” I grab his hand, leading him down the path and away from the party.
Suddenly, I realize I’m holding his hand.
And it feels—good, natural, warm. He’s a walking contradiction. I can’t decide if that smirk just makes me one-night stand horny or if I want to keep him.
When we get to a grassy clearing under a large tree, I say, “This looks like a good spot. Here, you spread out the blanket. I’ll hold the champagne.”
Once our spot is ready, he helps me sit down.
“Wow, the view up here is gorgeous,” I say, looking out over the grounds of the country club that sits on a cliff in northern California.
“It is,” he says. “You can see the ocean, the stars, and can still hear the music from the wedding.”
“Here’s to gorgeous views,” I say, raising the bottle in the air and looking more at him than the view. With his gorgeous smile, hot body, and pretty face, he’s quite the sexy package.
I take a gulp of champagne then pass it to him. He takes a drink and hands it back.
“Sure you haven’t had enough already?” he asks.
“Oh, no. I’m just getting started. Tell me why you weren’t on the Internet. You may have been the only one in the world who didn’t see me at my worst.”
He hands me his phone. “If you want me to see so bad, why don’t you show me?”
I shake my head. “No! I don’t want anyone to see! I was naked. Doing things. It’s really embarrassing.”
He glances at my chest, which is on full display in my sequined bridesmaid gown. “Somehow, I doubt that. Maybe you could reenact it for me.”
I roll my eyes and pass him the champagne. “Where are you from anyway?”
“Seattle,” he says.
“And how do you know the bride and groom?”
“Family friends.”
“You’re cute. Are you an actor?”
He laughs. “Me? No.”
“Model?”
“Uh, nope.”
“Hmm,” I say, trying to figure out how a guy this hot could be anything else.
“You’ll never guess,” he tells me.
“Fireman?”
“I’m an attorney.”
“No way! You’re way too sexy to be a lawyer!” I blurt out.
“You think I’m sexy?”
“Yes, in fact, tonight we’re going to have fun. You and me. No names. No baggage. Just fun. I will call you Sexy and you can call me—”
“Hotass,” he says, handing me the bottle and giving me a lopsided grin. “Drink, Hotass.”
We goof around, taking selfies and videos of ourselves drinking and dancing crazily.
“Are you a good guy?” I ask.
“Never had any complaints,” he teases. At least, I think he’s teasing. But with the way he looks, he’s probably not. And I kinda want to test that theory.
I smack him. “I’m not talking about sex. I mean, at the core, are you the kind of asshole who would sell our silly pictures and videos to the tabloids?”
“If I were an asshole, I’d tell you no but do it anyway.”
“True. Lie down and look at the stars with me.” I push on his chest, which is broad, hard, and doesn’t budge.
“You add some sugar to all that bossiness, and I might be more likely to do what you say,” he says.
When he says sugar, I take another swig, drop flat on my back, and let out a huge sigh. “I fucking hate sugar.”
“You hate sugar?” he asks, lying next to me. “Tell me you’re not one of those girls who doesn’t eat anything sweet.”
“I love sweets but this guy I used to date wrote a song about me. Said I was like sugar and a hurricane.”
“Those things don’t really go together.”
“He thought I was sweet like sugar but crazy like a hurricane, or something. I don’t know. I thought it was cute when he sang it for me, but then he told me that our relationship and the song would help him go more mainstream. It did.”
“Then what happened?”
“He hit it big and decided he didn’t need me anymore. We’d been together for a year. One night he kissed me on the forehead and went to get sushi.” I look at Sexy. “Have you ever kissed the forehead of a girl you didn’t love?”
He shakes his head. “Nope.”
“Wait. Are you dating anyone?”
“Me?” He points to himself and laughs. “Definitely not.”
“Why not? You’re a cute guy.”
“My long-time girlfriend and I parted ways about a year ago.”
“Parted ways?”
“When another anniversary came and went without a proposal, she left.”
“Why?”
“Um, it may have been because when she asked if I was ever going to propose, I said probably not.”
“Why did you stay with her for so long if you didn’t want to marry her? You not the marrying type?” I ask gently.
“No. I definitely want to get married. Just not to her. We had fun in college, but once she started working, it was all that mattered to her. I’m all for working hard, but I also believe in enjoying life.”
“Me too,” I say, handing him the bottle. “I’m sure the breakup was for the best. There must be something brighter in your future.” I say it with confidence, as much for him as for myself. As thrilled as I am for Harper and Maddox, their wedding sort of depressed me because I’m jealous. That’s what I want. A sexy guy who will love me no matter what.
And maybe one who will do me up against the wall.
I sneak a peek at the sexiness sitting next to me. He’s still looking up at the sky. And, damn, even his profile is handsome.
And he smells so freaking good, I want to lick him.
“So, did your guy not come back with sushi?” he asks, facing me.
“No, he sent me a breakup text.”
“That must have been a shock.” He places his hand on top of mine. And there’s something in his gesture—something in the warmth of his hand—that makes me feel safe. “It was.”
His thumb caresses the top of my hand—comforting me—for a few seconds before he hands me back the bottle. “Here, drink. Then keep talking.”
I take a big gulp. “I’m going to be drunk. Actually, Sexy, I might already be drunk. Anyway, that breakup was like a year ago. The last few months, I’ve been dating Zach Ellison.”
“The boy band guy?”
“Yep. He’s the oldest brother in the Summer Boys. I went on tour with him. We traveled all over the world together. He had a carnival set up on an estate in England for my birthday, just because I said I wanted a funnel cake. We escaped from his crazy fans in Paris on a motorcycle, and he took me to this little macaroon shop, where we drank wine and learned how to make them. I’ve never had a guy do such crazy, over-the-top romantic gestures. Then, exactly nine days ago, the ex-boyfriend, Luke, decided he wanted me back. I said no thanks. Last weekend, Zach and I were in Vegas when a sex tape of Luke and I found its way to the Internet. Tonight, Zach broke up with me because”—I start to cry—“I’m ruining his image.” I sigh dramatically and then spill my guts about my life. “And if that isn’t bad enough, I’m currently filming a project and I absolutely hate my costar. Actually, that’s not right. He hates me. He says stuff that sounds polite, but is really a backhanded slam. When I can’t take it, I tell everyone that I’m going to my dressing room, but I really sneak out back and get high just to calm the fuck down. And I’ll eat healthy at craft services and then sneak in my dressing room and eat crap snacks. And, sometimes, I say I’m going to workout, but I really drive around and look at houses. I’m a house whore. I want a house—no, I want a home. I keep leasing places, but none of them are right. I’m on the beach now, and I hate it. It’s where Luke and I lived, and I just need to be somewhere else. But I have a lease, and my manager says it’s expensive, and I can’t just leave. My publicist is a bitch and probably had a hand in the whole sex tape thing and was probably fucking my ex while we were still dating. My mom hates me unless she needs money. And, sometimes, I wish I could leave the house looking like crap. Sometimes I just want to drive through, get a burger, and not be photographed. And, sometimes, when I tell someone I work with that I respect their opinion, I’m yelling fuck off to them in my head. And, sometimes, I just need a hug.”
The next thing I know, he’s wrapping his arms around me and pulling me into his chest.
Then our lips meet—slowly, softly, like he’s exploring them.
He kisses my neck. Gently unbuttons my halter—causing it to fall down and expose my breasts, which he quickly covers with his mouth.
“I have a question,” I say, after we’ve had sex twice. “I don’t want this night to end. And since you’re from Seattle and I’m from L.A., this, us—tonight—it could just be fun, right? A one-time thing?”
“Absolutely,” he says.
“And since you’re friends with the bride and groom, I assume they trust you. I’m hoping that means I can trust you too.”
“You can,” he says sincerely.
“Good.” I pull him up off the ground. “It’s still early. Let’s get the hell out of here and go have some fun.”

A sexy celebrity stand alone romance by USA Today bestselling author, Jillian Dodd.

Cash Crawford is offered a dream job working with his brother as a junior talent agent. He’ll put his shiny new law degree to good use and make a bunch of money in the process. His first task is simple: Keep Ashlyn Roberts out of trouble and don’t sleep with her.

Excerpt

Bianca requires aftercare as much as she needs the sting of the pain. I clean her wounds, and apply a liberal amount of Neosporin ointment and let the wounds breathe. I then cover her up with the thin blanket and sit on the bed beside her. “Slave.” Her eyes flicker open. “Here you go.” I unscrew the water bottle and hold it to her lips. She automatically reaches out so she can take the bottle, but I lightly smack her hand away. “I’ll take care of you.” Bianca smiles, then puts her lips to the bottle as I tip it so she can drink.

“Thank you, Master,” she dreamily says before placing her head on the pillow and falling into sleep.

Walking away from the bed and to the opposite side of the playroom, I take my phone out of my pocket and call Matthew.

“Hey,” he says when he answers.

“Hey, I’m supposed to do an inventory check today but Bianca is starting to fall. We’ve just had a mini scene, but she’s out of it. Can you go in and start it, and I’ll be there in a few hours. I need to make sure she’s okay.”

“She alright?”

“Not great, but I’m hoping this time I can get to her before her mind fucks her over.”

“Dude, whatever you need.”

“Thanks, can you go in and start inventory?”

“Yeah, I’m taking Ella to see Debra her OBGYN, check the baby and make sure everything’s alright, then we can head in and start on it.”

“Thanks, we’ll be there before the club opens, but I just can’t get there for a couple of hours.”

“Yeah, man, don’t worry yourself. I’ve got it covered, look after your girl.”

Excerpt

The thing about starting over is it isn’t as easy as people say.

It’s impossible to become a completely different person.

You can change your hair.

Your makeup.

Even your name.

But at the end of each and every day you’re still the same person you were yesterday, and the day before that.

I’d spent the last year trying, and failing, to become a different person. The shitty events of my life had certainly changed me and I wasn’t the same carefree girl I used to be, but I was still Rachael—or Rae as I preferred to be called now—because no matter how far we run we can never escape ourselves.

Excerpt

Kate Matthews gaped at the small, plastic stick she clutched with a death grip. The frantic drum of her heart beat against her ribcage while her stomach churned in discord. A swift influx of panic, elation, disbelief, and fear bombarded her all at once, dragging the air from her lungs in a noisy whoosh.

Pregnant.

“Oh, shit.”

Reeling from the revelation, she stumbled backward to drop onto the toilet lid before her weak knees buckled. Unfortunately, she miscalculated the distance and fell in between the sink and toilet with a surprised squeal, landing in a squished heap and banging her head on the wall in the process. Temporarily rendered stupid, she simply sat there, wedged in the tiny space, gawking at the little strip of plastic glaring the truth at her.

“You all right in there?” her mate, Stephen, called from the other side of the door. No doubt he’d scented her distress.

Alarm whipped through her bloodstream, and the pregnancy test flew from Kate’s trembling hand to clatter on the floor in front of her. When he twisted the doorknob, she bolted from the floor and snatched the small stick from the bathroom tiles.

“I’m fine,” she exclaimed. “There was a spider.”

He twisted the knob again, and she sent up a quick prayer of thanks she’d had the foresight to turn the latch.

“Why’d you lock the door?” A mix of irritation and concern tinged his deep voice.
Frantic, she stashed the plastic strip in a box of tampons in the cabinet under the sink, certain he’d never look there, and then darted for the entrance. Once she fumbled with the lock, she tugged the door open and came face to chest with Stephen.

“I must’ve locked it by accident when I came in.” The excuse sounded weak to her own ears. Surely, he would think the same. They never locked the bathroom door, if she could get him to close the damn thing at all.

A frown creased his golden features. He watched her through narrowed blue eyes—attempting to decipher the obvious lie and cow her with his probing stare at the same time.

Drop it. Drop it. Please, for the love of God, drop it.

Excerpt

There’s something so freeing about this moment—something so dangerously safe, yet all-consuming. Going fast takes the breath from my chest.

It’s a feeling I’ve run from, but damn—it’s so addictively good.

We come to a stop four laps later, and as the car softens its roar to a throaty hum, my breath finally slows, my chest rising and falling at a speed of normalcy. Joel reefs the helmet from his head and turns to me, his face alive with excitement. “Holy shit, El.”

I laugh, and it’s so freeing. So liberating. I undo my own helmet and rest it in my lap. “That was … wow.”

“Right?” He laughs again, and then reaches across the console to take my hand with his warm one.

“I liked it way more than I thought I would,” I admit, and this time his fingers squeeze mine.

“What were you so afraid of, Ellie?” Joel asks.

You, I want to say. I’m afraid of you breaking my heart again.

“Come on, Ellie. Tell me.”

I pause, my eyes on the road we’re hurtling down with no brakes. “Life. Death.” Then, after a moment … “Falling.”

He reaches over and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear.

My heart stops.

My breath stills.

“I’ll promise to be here to hold you, Ellie.” His words send a shiver down my spine. “I’ll catch you when you fall.”
