NEW RELEASE – Wrapped Up With A Ranger by Kait Nolan

WRAPPED UP WITH A RANGER

Kait Nolan

Release Date: June 3

Can a grumpy former Ranger find lasting happiness in a marriage of convenience with a sunny single mom?

After losing his leg, former Army Ranger Holt Steele is building a new life and a new business with his friends. Sure, he never expected to put small-town baker on his resume, but he finds he likes the quiet, simple life. If only he didn’t like the sunny single mom who works across the street–or her adorable kid–quite so much.

After escaping a controlling husband, event planner Cayla Black has one focus–growing her business and maintaining a safe, happy home for her daughter. She has no time or interest in a man. Not even one who charms her child with Disney songs and keeps turning up like a mind-reader to help without being asked.

But when her ex’s conviction is overturned on a technicality, and he shows up intending to reclaim his wife and child, Holt intervenes with an outrageous lie. The only way to fix it is to make his falsehood the truth. As they struggle to convince everyone that their marriage of protection is real, these two reluctant hearts fall deeper, until the lines between the fiction and the dream begin to blur, and they have to risk it all to protect the family they didn’t know they wanted.

“H… how can this happen?”

“We’ll get to the bottom of it. But I need you to tell me everything that happened. Everything he said. Can you do that?”

Her voice was muffled as she told the story against his chest.

“He said he’d had good luck with his last appeal. That all his convictions were overturned, and he was a free man. I don’t understand. They said they had all the evidence they needed. How could it be overturned when he’s already been serving his sentence?”

It was a damned good question. “I’ve got a guy who can dig into it. But let’s talk about the more immediate issue. Will he come after Maddie, or is he all talk?”

Cayla lifted her head, and the look in her eyes shredded his gut. “Oh, he’ll come after her. Not out of any kind of love or desire to have a relationship with his child, but because he’ll believe she belongs to him. The same way he thinks I still do.”

“You’re divorced.”

“That doesn’t matter to a man like him. He views me as his property. And I have no idea what he’s going to do with what you threw out. What were you thinking, claiming to be my husband?” Baffled consternation knit her brows together.

He hadn’t been thinking. Not really. He’d already been walking over when he’d gotten her voice text. From that point, the only thing in his head was getting to Cayla, protecting her in whatever way he could. And when he’d walked in and seen her there, face sheet white, his immediate instinct had been to shield what was his. But he hadn’t had a chance to process what the hell that meant, and he didn’t think Cayla would appreciate that just now.

“That it might intimidate him. It seemed like a good idea in the heat of the moment.”

She pulled away, swiping at her face. “Yeah, well, you basically just waved a red flag at a very smart and calculating bull. He’s not going to just let this go because I allegedly belong to someone else. He’ll never acknowledge that claim. I was his first, and as far as he’s concerned, I’m his always. I only felt safe because he was behind bars and was supposed to stay there for a good long while. Now I… I don’t know what to do.”

Her shoulders shook as the tears fell harder.

Holt curled his hands into fists, desperate to do something. “He’s not going to get to either of you. I swear it.”

“How can you promise that?”

His brain spun, considering and rejecting scenarios. If Raynor sued for some kind of custody of Maddie, being caught out in a lie would hardly be in Cayla’s favor. And even if he didn’t, would they even be safe in their own home? The man she’d described wouldn’t let a piece of paper like a restraining order stop him—if they could even get one. They needed protection on site. Both of them. And there was one obvious solution.

“Marry me.”

He knows he should be fine with her dating men whose compatibility scores aren’t in the single digits. And he should absolutely ignore how just being near her sets his entire world on fire.

Yes, Toby is very aware that falling for his perfectly imperfect match will lead to devastating heartbreak. But he also knows that if there’s even a one-percent chance of them making it, he’ll move heaven and earth to beat the odds.

Keep reading for a look inside Doctor Love!

I down more of my drink. For an eighteen-dollarish glass of whiskey, it’s not bad.

When I glance at Eden, I see her eyes have glazed over. I follow her gaze across the room to where her boyfriend is talking to one of the test couples. As if he feels her staring, Max turns, and the expression he gets makes me shake my head. Pretty sure I’ve never looked at a girl like that, but I’d like to.

I wonder what it must be like to be that much in love. The way they’re looking at each other … the chemistry is so thick, you can almost see it shimmering in the air. It’s like there’s no one else in this entire place but them. Whenever I witness the passion between Eden and Max, I wonder if that sort of depth of emotion is reserved for a lucky few. Will everyone get to feel something that powerful during their lifetimes? Or is it some kind of cosmic lottery that most of us never get to win?

“Out of interest,” I say. “Did you and Max fill out your compatibility questionnaires?”

Eden drags herself away from her man and leans one elbow on the bar. “Of course. Max wanted to make sure your algorithm was working.”

“So, what did you score?”

She gives me a smug smile. “Ninety-two.”

I almost choke on my own saliva. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

She looks confused. “No. Why?”

I stand up straighter. “Just haven’t seen a score that high before. New record.” Up until now, the highest was eighty-six, and that was one of my research couples who’d been together for thirty years. “Guess it must feel good to know you chose right.”

She smiles wistfully into her wine. “I don’t need a score to tell me Max is my soul mate. When you know, you know.”

I roll my neck again to try and relieve the tension in my shoulders. “So I hear.”

She touches my forearm, and I can feel the sympathy she’s exuding. “Toby, you’re a six-foot-five, totally ripped, scruffily handsome genius. I have zero doubt you’ll meet your perfect match someday soon.”

I shrug her off. “Doesn’t bother me.” I’m such a liar. I want a soul mate just as much as the next person. I just doubt it’s something I’m ever going to have.

Eden frowns for a second, before turning to me with an excited expression. “Well smack my ass and call me stupid, why didn’t I think of it before? I have a single friend who’d be great for you.”

Oh, Jesus, here we go. “Yeah, I don’t think so.”

“Just hear me out. She’s gorgeous, intelligent, quirky as hell––”

“Eden, I’m the professional matchmaker here. How about we leave potential dates to the expert instead of just hooking me up with some random woman you know.”

“She’s not random. She’s Asha’s best friend.”

I cringe. “Are you talking about that Joanna chick you mentioned ages ago? The one who first told you about Mister Romance? Didn’t you say she was a compulsive liar?”

“That was before I got to know her. She’s actually remarkably cool.”

“I’m sure. Still not interested. Plus, I’ve already made it clear that until this app is out in the big, bad world, I have zero time to scratch myself, let alone date.”

She nods like she understands, but knowing Eden, this subject is not being dropped any time soon. “Okay. Sure. I hear you. But just know that one day, you’ll meet someone amazing and forget all about how busy you are. When your soul mate shows up, you can try to deny them, or ignore them, but it won’t work. They’ll bully their way into your life whether you want them to or not. Take it from someone who knows.”

I down the dregs of my whiskey and put the empty glass on the bar. I love Eden like a sister, and I’m grateful that she looks out for me, but I’m really not in the mood for this conversation tonight. She’s working on the assumption that there’s someone out there for everyone, and the more I study the numbers, the more certain I am that most of us are destined to stagger from one bad relationship to the next, until we die, miserable and alone.

“Well, thanks for the drink,” I say as I pat her shoulder. “But I really need to get back to work.” Without waiting for permission, I sit back down in front of my laptop and open it.

She rubs my back. “Okay, then, Doctor Love. Go matchmake your little heart out. I have to head home to finish up a story, but I’ll see you at work on Monday, okay?”

“Yep, see you then.”

As she heads across the room to kiss Max goodbye, I watch them for a few seconds before taking a deep breath and diving back into the dizzying labyrinth of code on the screen in front of me.

BLOG TOUR – A Borrowed Boyfriend (Fairy Godmother Agency) by Angela Casella

He’s good at faking it.

But it’s starting to feel real.

A Borrowed Boyfriend, a brand new fake relationship romantic comedy from USA Today bestselling author Angela Casella, is out now!

Marnie

On a scale of one to ten, how bad is it that I want to see my fake boyfriend naked?

What’s worse than being left at the altar? Becoming a meme because one of your nearest and dearest took a video of you running—and falling—down the aisle and made it internet famous.

Yup, I’m that Marnie Jones. My sister is for-real famous, which only makes people more interested in my predicament. Is it any wonder I’m feeling down?

My best friends will try anything to cheer me up…including setting me up with the Fairy Godmother Agency, a maybe-crazy husband and wife private investigator-slash-life coach team who promise to find the person who sold me out. Better yet, they lend me a fake boyfriend to make my ex jealous and appease my sister.

Griffin is gorgeous, attentive, and a very convincing actor. He’s perfect for the job.

Too perfect.

***

Griffin

After a lifetime of practice, I’m good at pretending. But the more time I spend with Marnie Jones, the less I have to feign my interest in her.

She may be down, but she’s not out. She’s beautiful, funny, and just the right amount of weird. All she needs is someone to remind her of that.

If I weren’t such a screw up, I’d have half a mind to do it myself.

Fall in love today!

Keep reading for a look inside A Borrowed Boyfriend!

“Aw, you two are staring into each other’s eyes like you’re teenagers,” Sinclair says, slicing her way into the moment. I shift my attention to my sister’s face on the iPad. Her words are sweet, but she’s obviously not appeased. To be fair, she’s spoken to me nearly every day for the last month, and I’ve been feeling down for a while. Now, I’m suddenly in a relationship with a man who looks like this, wearing a nighty that could have been stolen from the set of her Netflix show. She probably has whiplash.

Then again, maybe she thinks I could never find a man like this without bribing him. It stings, even more so because she’s right.

“What can I say? Mitchell makes me feel like I’m a teenager again,” I tell her, my tone tight.

“The same age you were when you pretended you had a boyfriend?” She grins at “Mitchell,” that thousand-dollar grin that’s on dozens of posters. “See? I have my reasons for suspicion.”

Old hurt wells up inside of me. My sister was a beautiful TV star, and I was an awkward teenager who couldn’t attract a second glance from a guy unless he was teasing me. So, yes, when she asked if I had a date to prom, I claimed I did. Rupert Wrightman.

Crap. I’m really bad at coming up with off-the-cuff names. Actually, considering I told her this handsome stranger next to me is called “Mitchell Mountainbottom,” I’ve probably gotten worse at it.

I look down, but suddenly strong fingers are touching my jaw, tipping my face up. Then I’m looking into Mitchell’s eyes, which look hot, like caramel starting to boil in a pan, and he shocks me by leaning in for a soft kiss. It would have lasted for only a few second, just long enough for me to register his soft but firm lips, the brush of his short beard, and his spicy scent, but my mouth parts in surprise, and then I find myself pressing into him, electricity arcing between us and gluing us together. He’s the one who pulls back, a slight smile on his face as he lifts his hand to my jaw and softly traces it.

“Seems to me there must’ve been plenty of guys half in love with her,” he says, still looking at me, and my pulse is galloping in my chest, so alarmingly fast I think I might actually die. “If she did pretend to have a boyfriend, it was probably because she wanted to let them down easy.” He lifts a hand to my jaw again, tracing it. “She’s thoughtful like that.”

I’m at a loss for words. Actually, I can’t do anything but gape at him. Should I be pissed at him? Probably. Maybe I would be if I could form a single coherent thought.

It’s for the best that Sinclair takes over. “You guys are too cute.” There’s a bit of an edge to her voice. She’s still suspicious, although I’ll bet she’s not altogether sure why she’s suspicious.

“Yes, we are,” Mitchell says with a smirk. He’s still looking at me, though.

I’m the one who finally breaks the stare. Glancing back at my sister, I clear my throat. “We have to go. Talk to you later?”

“Where do you have to go?” she asks. “You haven’t even finished your breakfast.”

Mitchell gives her a suggestive grin. “Isn’t it obvious? It was nice meeting you, Scarlett.”

Then he reaches over and ends the call.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Oh the gods…… this was a truly fabulous read.

Griffin and Marnie make an awesome couple….. even if they’re not actually together initially.

What starts out as a fake relationship to help Marnie out becomes so much more as the pair spend time together, get to know each other, discover that they get on and really like the other.

Griffin was so good for Marnie. He gave her the confidence to get over here very public humiliation while being there to support and comfort her when needed. Marnie brought out a protective side of Griffin and made him want more with her.

I loved seeing them develop into more and realise just what they meant to each other.

Who’d have thought this pair would make such good Fairy Godmothers but Nicole and Damien, what can I say, for all their craziness they truly know who works together and manage to finangle things just so that the right people get their deserved happy ever after!!!

This was a really fun read with lots of laughs, sweetness and heat!

I’m definitely looking forward to more in the series!

I’m on my way back, my arms full of eggs, when I pick up the scent of an intruder. The front door of my cabin is open and swinging in the breeze. “Motherfucker…”

I pick up my pace, dropping eggs as I rush into the cabin. I make it just in time to hear Lana’s gasp. She’s standing in the bedroom door, her mouth hanging open. And in the kitchen is a big black bear, its face stuck into my ice box.

“No!” I snap, and wave my arms, forgetting I’m carrying the eggs. They spatter to the floor. I catch two of them and lob them at the bear. It scuttles back, but gets a yolk to the snout. Snuffing and sneezing, it shakes its head, spraying egg everywhere.

“Out,” I charge forward, keeping myself between the bear and Lana. I wave an arm like a traffic cop, gesturing to the door. The bear, who is really my brother Axel, gives me a reproachful look and ambles towards the exit. Halfway there, he stops and swivels his head towards my bedroom. He’s scented Lana.

“Now!” I bellow, getting behind him so I can herd him out. The idiot’s probably hung over and looking for easy grub in my fridge. Goddammit. I should’ve put out word that I was on a top secret mission, not to be disturbed.

By the time I get Axel out, my floor is covered in oozing egg yolks and broken shells. Both the fridge and the freezer doors are hanging open, and I have to shove a bunch of food back in to close them. One frozen package is pierced with claw marks–some deer sausage Axel made last year. I don’t know why he stored it with me. I’d forgotten it was there.

There are three small eggs that survived the fight. If I salvage them and the pack of sausage, I can make the human a full meal.

Oh, shit, the human.

Lana is still standing in the door, her brown eyes wide and staring. I hustle over to her.

“Lana.” I rest my hands on her shoulders and check her over. “You okay? Talk to me.”

Her lower lip trembles. “B-b-b–”

“Bear.” I gather her into my arms. This is the third time today I’ve held her, and damn if it gets better every time. “Yes, I know. He’s gone now.” I raise my voice and holler out the window at Axel’s retreating form. “And he won’t come back.”

“He just wandered in through the door and got into the fridge,” Lana is breathless. “Guess the bears really are bad around here.”

“You have no idea.”

BLOG TOUR – Reluctantly Yours by Erin Hawkins

The closer she gets, the more my heart thaws….

Reluctantly Yours, an all-new enemies-to-lovers fake-relationship rom-com full of steam and laughs from bestselling author Erin Hawkins, is available now!

Barrett

I’ve rebuilt my father’s media company with hard work and determination, but my single status leaves me on the outs with the one businessman I need to get close to. A little white lie and I’m suddenly in love, head over heels. Now I need to find a fake girlfriend, someone to keep up appearances without any emotions.

When I find my mother’s fiery assistant in a compromising position, it’s the perfect opportunity to get what I want: a girlfriend for business appearances, without any feelings involved. I won’t let the fact that I’m wildly attracted to the petite redhead get in my way.

But the closer she gets, the more my heart thaws and all too soon I find myself having to choose between the business deal I’m determined to land and the woman I’ve fallen hard for.

Chloe

After two years as editorial assistant to JoAnna St. Clair of the famed St. Clair Press, I’ve been given a chance to take on my dream job as an assistant editor.

When my childhood best friend asks me to host her bachelorette weekend in the city, I’m thrilled to show everyone how amazing my life is in New York. (Things not included on the tour are my shoebox of an apartment or my romance book collection that is the only thing keeping me warm at night.)

But when I fail to confirm the restaurant reservation and I’m left with no event location an hour before the party starts, I’m desperate. Desperate enough to use my boss’s penthouse for a party while she’s out of town.

No one will ever know. That is until her cold, dismissive, and annoyingly hot son walks in.

In order to keep his silence, Barrett demands a favor in return: he needs a date for a business dinner. That’s easy enough until his mother finds out and he seals my fate by telling her we are dating. It’s that or kiss my job goodbye.

While I’m reluctant at first, the more time we spend together, the harder it is to fight my attraction to him. Beneath that brooding, icy demeanor lies a heart of gold.

But when a scandalous discovery puts his deal at stake, and our relationship to the test, will Barrett prove he’s all about business?

Excerpt

I take another shot because hosting your friend’s bachelorette party in your boss’s penthouse apartment without her permission is super stressful. When Jules originally suggested it, my gut reaction was hell, no but then Lauren texted me how excited she was for the party and with no other options this late in the game, I caved sending a mass text with the updated address.

The thing is I couldn’t even ask JoAnna for permission even if I wanted to. Her flight would land at LAX long after Lauren’s party was scheduled to start. And what if she said no? JoAnna has been nothing but kind to me, even motherly as I navigate this city on my own, but using her apartment for a personal gathering is definitely crossing into inappropriate territory. I scratch at my neck. Either the sequins on this rented dress are irritating my skin or breaking rules gives me hives.

Jules called a caterer friend of hers that was able to make extra hors d’oeuvres last minute. She didn’t have time or ingredients for me to make personal selections so I was at the mercy of what Jamie and Greg picked for their Hawaiian luau themed wedding reception. So, Luau Thai chicken and sweet and sour meatballs it is!

While the rest of the ladies are out in JoAnna’s living room, snacking and sipping on drinks, I pull my custom-made pin the hunk on the junk game out of my tote. That’s right, Etsy, I made it myself and saved fifty bucks. Although the guy at Kinkos gave me a funny look when it came off the machine.

Ryan Gosling smiles back at me, the over muscled body double I used for the lower half is disproportionate to the size of his head. The empty spot between his legs the intended target for my printed and hand cut paper dicks.

“Chloe!” I can hear my friend Claire yelling for me down the hall. Claire, Lauren and I were three peas in a pod growing up. Claire lives in Seattle now and while we haven’t been the best at keeping in touch, when she arrived an hour ago, we easily picked back up where we left off in high school.

“The dicks are coming!” I shout, as I pull the paper dicks out of the bag, but she’s already there in the doorway, and I hold up the poster so she can check out Ryan Gosling on steroids. I wave the paper dicks around, then, I explode with giggles at my little joke. “Get it? They’re coming?”

“Hilarious,” she deadpans before waving me out toward the hallway.

I’m still laughing as she waves her hands, urgently motioning me out of the guest room where I’ve put all the party supplies. I didn’t think pin the junk on the hunk would garner such enthusiasm.

“Where should we hang it?” I ask.

“Forget the game. The stripper is here. And, he’s gorgeous. Not like a Jersey Shore beef cake, fake tan kind of stripper, but a sexy businessman stripper. Where did you find him? WallStreetstrippers.com?”

Ooh la la. A stripper sounds fun. Even better than pin the dick on the prick or whatever this game is called. But, I gather the game up and bring it anyways because I did put a lot of effort into it.

As I start to follow Claire back into the living room, her words finally penetrate the vodka induced fog clouding my brain. I really should have been keeping track of how many shots I’ve taken.

“Wait.” I stop short, nearly dropping the paper dicks on the floor. “I didn’t hire a stripper.”

There’s only one man that would have access to JoAnna’s apartment without needing to be buzzed in. My stomach clenches with anxiety. Oh God.

“Really?” Claire’s eyes turn to saucers, “so, who’s the stud in the suit?”

My eyes scan the sea of scantily clad women until I find him. There, across the room, looking like sex on a stick in a navy suit, with his dark hair hanging over his forehead, being hounded by all the bachelorette party attendees is Barrett.

My heart stops. This is a scenario that I never in a million years considered. And why would I? Why would Barrett stop by JoAnna’s on a Friday night? When he knows she’s out of town? Doesn’t he have better things to do?

He sees me then, and when our eyes connect, everything stops. It’s what I imagine a deer feels when its body is lit up by the high beams of an oncoming vehicle. Frozen, stunned, unable to do anything but wait for impact.

His hazel gaze holds mine, intense and challenging, before his full lips slide into a devilish smirk.

“Chloe Anderson,” he shakes his head, “you’ve been a bad girl.”

EXCERPT

Etched in Honor

Carrie Ann Ryan

I dodged the blacked-tipped talons handily but nearly tripped over the wolf to my side. I winced as I jumped over Ronin and didn’t let the fact that he cowered beside me insult my cat. After all, he was a new wolf. And he didn’t know exactly how to fight yet. This wasn’t exactly the training I had planned for the day, but there was no going back now, not when I needed to fight whatever these things were.

It looked like a man, a normal man, with excessive strength. Its eyes were dark-rimmed, but I couldn’t see its irises to tell what color they were. And its fingernails had turned into claws, or perhaps the talons I had once thought. But they looked as if they had been dipped into black ink. The nails were black for sure, but even the fingertips seemed to radiate that darkness.

I had never seen the like, but as I was part of the Aspen Pack, I knew that not all was what it seemed, and there were many unknowns out there.

I let my claws push through my fingertips and raked the nails down the back of one. The man in front of me let out a shocked gasp, then fell to his knees. I didn’t want any of that black tar or whatever it was to touch me. My cat didn’t like the scent of it, and frankly, neither did the human part of me.

I was a lion shifter in the middle of a wolf Pack, a wolf Pack that was like none other.

And my cat already had enough and arched its back up.

There were two of these creatures in front of me, and they didn’t scent of the rogues that we had been fighting for years, nor did they scent of wolf.

I wasn’t sure if they were a witch gone bad or not, but whatever they were, we needed to deal with it before it was too late.

I grumbled a bit, then found a branch to toss at Ronin. Ronin gave me this odd look, his human face looking puzzled, and I sighed before I made sure he held the stick, and I pulled the dagger out of my boot.

I used my claws on the creature’s back, but I wasn’t about to get anywhere near its mouth.

My senses told me it wasn’t a good idea, no matter what it was.

I used the dagger to stab the closest creature at the base of the skull and twisted. It let out a scream, one abruptly cutoff, before it fell to its knees, its body at an odd angle on the ground.

I went to the other one, but it came at Ronin quickly, ignoring me. I cursed under my breath, my cat ready to slice at those who endangered our people. Ronin was under our watch, and we refused to let him get hurt because we weren’t strong enough.

I kept moving towards it, but Ronin smacked the thing with the branch.

Well, that was one way to fight it. Probably not the best way, but we were getting somewhere. At least I hoped so.

Ronin smacked it again, but then the creature gripped the branch and shook it. He tossed Ronin twenty feet back, and my brows winged up.

Well then, that was some strength. He probably could even beat Hayes when it came to strength, and that polar bear was the strongest person I knew.

It seemed it was time for me to stop pussyfooting around, as it were, and take care of this thing.

It was bleeding from the claw marks, and the blood was red, so I counted that as something to take note of, but I wasn’t sure what it meant.

I didn’t want to wait to find out, so I moved forward and tossed my dagger directly into the creature’s eyes.

It screamed, pulling at the dagger but not falling down.

That image would haunt my nightmares for years to come. Considering the number of things that already haunted my nightmares, that was saying something.

“Okay then. Why won’t you die?”

“This is only the beginning,” the creature growled as he pulled the dagger out of its eye.

I swallowed hard. I hadn’t been aware it could talk. I had no idea what it was, but it wasn’t dead from a dagger to the eye, and it stepped forward once, twice, and fell.

Oh good. It was dead. Thank the goddess because I wasn’t sure exactly what I was supposed to do now.

I sighed and then went to take my dagger back.

Ronin sat on the ground and looked up at me before lowering his gaze.

His wolf was in the golden glow surrounding his iris, and my cat wanted to reach out, bat him on the head, and then hug him close.

Ronin wasn’t submissive by any means, nor was he a paternal wolf. He was a dominant, but so in the middle of the chain that he could wobble either way depending on who was around him. And my cat was one of the most dominant shifters in the Pack.

It didn’t matter that the rest of them were wolves except for a select few. My cat was Beta of the Aspen Pack and had held that title longer than any other leader within the Pack. Everyone else had gained their connection and responsibility after everything had changed.

I alone remained.

My heart ached, but I pushed away the pain.

Just because the rest of the hierarchy was relatively new in the past year and a half didn’t mean we were falling or breaking.

I just happened to be the only one with experience.

Experience that was met with hatred in some eyes, but I was good at ignoring that.

I leaned down in front of Ronin and gripped the back of his neck as I would a pup. He looked up at me then, meeting my gaze for an instant before lowering his eyes but not his chin.

My cat purred in happiness. That was showing who was more dominant, but not lowering. And that I counted as progress.

“Are you okay? Did their claws or teeth or anything else out of the ordinary touch you?”

Ronin shook his head. “No, I’m fine. I’m fine, but I messed up.”

I shook my head. “Whatever that was, was far stronger than either one of us was prepared for.”

He looked up at me then for just an instant and blinked in surprise. “You don’t know what that was?”

I didn’t want any more lies in my Pack, not after years of pain and sacrifice and nothing but lies. So I told him the truth. Chase would have to find his own path and tell me exactly what he wanted the rest of the Pack to know in general. After all, he was my Alpha and had once been my friend.

I pushed that thought away and squeezed the back of Ronin’s neck again. The younger wolf relaxed marginally, and I knew he liked the action. “I don’t know what that was. We’re going to find out, though. It was strong, so strong that I had to use my dagger rather than my claws or strength. You did what you could, and while you aren’t ready to hold a weapon on you at all times like that, we’re getting there.”

“I nearly tripped you,” he grumbled.

“We were just finishing a long training session when those whatever they were slithered out of the trees as they did. They came on us out of nowhere, and we’re both exhausted after our training.”

He wrinkled his nose, and I knew he smelled the lie on that.

“Okay, you were exhausted. I’m tired. Does that make your wolf feel better?” I asked, putting a lighthearted note in my tone.

Ronin nodded. “Yes. Sorry. I’m still getting used to all these scents and everything.”

My heart ached for him, and my cat wanted to reach out and lick his face just to make sure that he felt better. Doing that in human form with a new wolf, one that didn’t know me well, was probably not the best thing.

“Everything’s okay. We are going to figure out what these are and put them in the basement so that way our Healer can take a look at it.”

“Maybe the other Packs know?”

That made me smile. “Hopefully, the others do. They’ve all dealt with many strange things.”

“Well, we have our own strangeness,” Ronin said with a bit of pride, and I felt it too. The Aspen Pack was unique in that we were not just wolves. Other than a few people who held our secrets, the rest of the world thought the only shifters out there were wolves. After all, they were the ones that had been forced to be revealed to the public. And after a war and scary end of times, humans and wolves lived in a decent harmony. The fact that the government had wolf sympathizers helped. Any scary laws that could have restricted the movements and freedoms of anyone magical in nature were now scrubbed off the table indefinitely.

Wolves and witches were able to live freely.

Cats and bears, on the other hand, were unheard of.

I knew of a couple of cats that roamed the earth as individuals, but I was the only lioness that I knew of near here other than Aimee. There was a lynx shifter as well, and she was my best friend, but other than that, it was just me here.

And there was only one bear that I knew of.

Perhaps there were other secret Packs that held them, and I had the hope in my heart that there were. But even most wolves didn’t know we existed, and that had been for a reason years before.

Now I wasn’t even sure what the reason could be.

I looked down at the two dead bodies next to me, my cat hissing, and ran my hand over Ronin’s back. Then I stood up and helped him do the same.

“We should head back into the den, behind the wards. But we need to tell the others what happened.”

There was no doubt that Chase as Alpha would be able to feel that something had indeed happened.

The others would as well since Steele was the Enforcer, and he could feel outside threats to the Pack. This just felt like such a different threat that I wasn’t sure he would be able to tell what it was.

Cruz might be able to tell as well, but he was the Heir and felt so lost that I wasn’t even sure he would know to respond at all. It didn’t matter that he was a dominant wolf. We were all so far out of our depths, it was a little scary.

I rubbed at my chest and then was reminded again that I wasn’t the only cat shifter around. At least the only lioness around. I wanted someone of my own kind, even if it didn’t make sense. I should see Aimee. And check on her. She was a lioness like me because of what I had to do to save her.

I shook my head, remembering the Talon Pack lioness who now lived in a Pack of wolves as I did.

She was strong, mated to the Healer, and could handle anything on her own.

At least, that’s what I figured. It wasn’t like I could truly speak to her often these days, not with my needing to be with the Aspens as much as I was.

I turned to see Steele coming towards me, a glare on his face as always. I didn’t know him well, though that was only because I had to hide my true loyalties for so long that I didn’t know my Pack as I should.

He gave me a tight nod as he looked around at his lieutenants. “What happened here?”

I raised a brow because he wasn’t as dominant as I was. The only person that was within this Pack was Chase, and even then, some days, it didn’t feel like it.

Steele just shook his head, his own wolf understanding that he didn’t get to growl at me like that in front of others. We were all still finding our place, figuring out how to work together as a cohesive unit. The fact that I hadn’t had a cohesive unit with the previous hierarchy spoke volumes. We were taking our cues from the Redwoods and Talons. But even then, the Redwoods had decades of learning to work together and were an actual family. The hierarchy before the current generation was still around, guiding them. They weren’t elders per se, but they were a tight unit.

The Talons, on the other hand, had to rebuild from the ground up at one point, and so we were trying to follow their lead. Much like the Central Pack was doing. Though their Pack had been completely demolished, only coming back with a blessing from the actual moon goddess, the goddess of wolves.

I shook my head and looked over at Steele. “I don’t know. I’m trying to figure it out myself.”

I explained about the dark claws and the fact that it had spoken even after we had shoved a dagger into its eye. Steele raised a brow, then pulled out his phone. “We should talk with the Redwoods and the Talons. They might have seen something when they were down south.”

I frowned, then remembered that nearly a year ago the Tracker for the Redwood Pack had gone down south to meet another Pack of all things and had come up with something similar. The dark smudges and black bite marks.

“Do you think it’s that? I thought that those were genetically modified rogues or whatever that they had found.”

“Not exactly. The dead bodies that piled up happened to be because of that rogue, the wolf that had gotten out thanks to the drug that is no longer a problem within our borders. However, the black marks seemed to be something different.”

I cursed under my breath. “I didn’t know that.”

“I only think I know it because I was talking with Gina.”

Gina was the Enforcer of the Redwood Pack, his counterpart, and had more experience than he did, but only barely.

“Okay. I’ll talk with Chase then. Do you guys have this settled?”

“We do. We’ll meet up with Wren.”

A smile slid over my face at the mention of my best friend’s name. Wren was a lynx shifter and our Healer.

As long as she was connected to the Pack, she could use those bonds to heal those around her. She was also an MD and kept up with her medical studies throughout her years. She had been a doctor before the goddesses had called on her to become the Healer of our Pack. It had fit, and now she worked on the mystical side and the medical side.

“Hopefully, she’ll figure it out, and hey, I hear there’s a new geneticist joining the Pacific Northwest Pack Alliance.”

I grinned. “Is that the name that you’re going with now?” I asked.

Steele rolled his eyes. “I think Cruz is having a little too much fun with the other Packs forming names. But since we’re working so close together, the Pacific Northwest Pack Alliance seems to be working with the four of us.”

That made me smile because it wasn’t just the Redwoods and the Talons any longer. The Aspens were going to bring things to the table, and I knew the Centrals were doing the same. Even though the Centrals had a dark past with the Redwoods, we had just as much of a dark one with the Talons.

My stomach ached at that thought, and my cat scratched at me, so I pushed that thought away and sighed. “I need to go meet with Chase.”

“I take it training’s over then?” he asked, looking at Ronin.

Ronin lowered his head, and if he were in wolf form, his tail would’ve been tucked between his legs. I moved forward, went on my tiptoes, and ran my hand through his hair. “You’re fine. We’ll finish up the day after tomorrow. I know you have your studies.”

The kid, and he really was a kid, only in his early twenties, beamed at me. “Yes, true. Thank you so much for your help. I know I’m getting better, right?”

“You are. You fought well today. We weren’t expecting this, but we made it out because we had each other. So thank you.”

His eyes widened before he walked away, speaking with another wolf his age that was a Lieutenant. That Lieutenant was far stronger in dominance but had just an edge of maternal nature to her that she seemed to ease Ronin’s wolf.

“You’re good with him.”

I looked at Steele. “I’m trying. Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.”

He swallowed hard. “I feel like that too. Even though you’ve been Beta for longer, you had to be a different Beta before.”

I knew he’d said it as a compliment, but it felt like a slap nonetheless. “I know. But we have new wolves joining the Pack every week, it seems.”

“We do. And that’s something that Chase is going to want to talk to you about,” he added with a grimace.

“What?”

“Allister’s here.”

I blinked at his mention of the Thames Pack Alpha. The Thames Pack was over by the actual Thames River in England. “I didn’t realize he was visiting.”

“He wanted to meet with our alliance, or whatever else he wants to call it. And in doing so, he brought with him a lone wolf that’s been with them for a while but wanted to come back to the United States. And since the Centrals and the Aspens are pretty much recruiting for Pack members at this point, he figured this guy would work out well with us.”

“Oh. Okay. What does it have to do with me?”

“As Beta, Chase wants you to help him get acclimated to the den. He’s going to blood him in later today.”

“Him? Just one?”

“There are two women that are joining the Central Pack, from what I can tell. But we get the Tracker.”

My lion perked up, her tail swishing back and forth. “He’s a Tracker?”

“He is, and has the talent for it, and since our Pack doesn’t actually have one as part of the hierarchy, Chase says the moon goddess will bestow the new guy with the title.”

A Tracker was someone who could follow the Pack lines and use extrasensory abilities to find anyone within the Pack. If magic or other impediments were in the way, it didn’t always work, but a Tracker was great to have. We hadn’t had one in a decade. Not since our former Alpha had killed him for daring to disobey him.

I swallowed hard, thinking of another Tracker that I’d met in my lifetime. One I didn’t want to think about too hard because it hurt even to imagine.

“I guess since I’m the Beta, it’s my job to see to the needs of the Pack.”

Steele saluted me as he turned back to work with the dead bodies that I had left behind, and I shook my hair out before making my way towards the den.

The den was situated in the northern part of California, amongst the Redwood trees, much like the Redwood namesake Pack that was a little more north of us. We took over Washington, Oregon, and California once you put all of the Pack territories together. We were a large group, but insular.

Our wards protected the den itself, but a lot of our Pack lived outside the den, within the communities of humans and witches. That was how it should be. A den was a place to come home to.

It hadn’t been like that for so long that it almost felt odd to think that now this den could be healthy once again.

I walked through the wards, past the sentries, and let the magic settle over my skin. My cat preened, enjoying the tingles of magic, and I shook my head at it.

Silly cat.

She wanted to run, to let the world look at her glorious golden pelt, but I ignored her. We had things to do. We could laze in the sun later.

I turned the corner, my cat perking up, an odd scent hitting her nose.

I frowned, wondering why it scented so familiar.

“Audrey. You’re here. Good,” Chase, my Alpha, stated as I came towards him, but my heart stuttered, my skin breaking out into a cold sweat. I couldn’t focus. Not on him.

It couldn’t be.

This wasn’t him.

It was a ghost, a death. This was nothing. I was dreaming. Maybe I had been bitten by whatever I just fought, and now I was dead.

Because this couldn’t be true.

“Audrey, you know Allister, and this is Gavin. He’ll be a new member of the Aspen Pack.”

Gavin. That was the name of the stranger, the stranger with the eyes.

This wasn’t Gavin.

No, the man before me was the replica of Basil.

My mate.

My dead mate.

BLOG TOUR – Kiss my Giraffe (Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild #7) by Erin Nicholas

She’s the only woman he can’t resist.

And now she lives right next door.

Kiss My Giraffe, a spicy grumpy sunshine romantic comedy, and the final standalone in the Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild series from New York Timesbestselling author Erin Nicholas, is available now!

𝙀𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙛𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙡𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨…𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙗𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙-𝙤𝙛 𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙢𝙞𝙚𝙨…𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨. 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙖 𝙜𝙪𝙮 𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙠𝙚𝙚𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙨𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙞𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙪𝙩.

Fiona knew Knox would be mad when she moved in next door.

And not because she brought a collection of wild animals with her.

And she was right.

So she intended to leave him alone. Mostly.

But he’s not ignoring her. He’s actively working to send her and her “ridiculous menagerie” (rude) right back out of town.

Still, as hard as she tries, it’s impossible to stop thinking about the small town grump’s long hair and tattoos and that mouth.

Not the one that’s almost always set in a grim line and says things like, “you got a permit for that?”

Nope, the one that kisses her like she’s everything he’s ever wanted and says very dirty things in her ear. And sweet, protective, supportive things. Sometimes. Accidentally. When she catches him off-guard.

The one that also says he only wants a long-distance fling with her. Nothing serious. And that he never dates women he sees every day. Like his neighbor.

Well, fine. If he doesn’t want her—and her unbelievable past and that-can’t-be-real future—then she doesn’t want him either. He can just kiss her…giraffe. (Yeah, she actually has a couple of those.)

Now she just needs to convince her heart to give him up.

Read on for a look inside Kiss My Giraffe!

“Remember that thing we talked about at Christmas?”

Knox felt his gut clench. They’d talked about sleeping together. And him becoming the temporary foster dad to three baby otters.

And they’d kissed for the first time. A kiss that had been causing annoying, unwelcome, frustrating dirty dreams for three fucking months.

“About having a salacious affair where we sneak around behind our friends’ backs and sleep together whenever I’m in town?” she pressed when he didn’t answer.

“Yes. I remember.”

Too well. He was incredibly pissed about how often he’d replayed that conversation and how restless he’d been waiting for her to call or come back to Autre.

He didn’t pine for women. Ever. He did the opposite of that.

But now she was here. And Knox wasn’t sure what he was feeling. Her showing up unannounced wasn’t unusual. Fiona Grady rolled into Autre without warning more often than not in her grape-soda-purple truck that sent his heart hammering and cock hardening.

But it had been three months since he’d seen her. Since they’d talked. Since he’d had any clue what she was doing, where she was, how she was.

Suddenly, she was on his doorstep asking about their plan to bang whenever she was in town for a couple of days?

“Okay, well, there’s something I need to tell you that will make you not want to do that anymore,” she said. “So I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get naked together once before I told you and ruined everything?”

He opened his mouth to reply. Then shut it without a word. What the hell?

He glanced over his shoulder. Three minutes ago, he’d been sitting at his kitchen table doing paperwork with a cup of coffee and listening to a podcast about new creative urban development ideas.

Now the woman he was low-level obsessed with was on his porch asking if he wanted to have sex before she told him something that would make him not want to have sex with her anymore.

He ran a hand through his hair. This was why Fiona Grady was no good for him. She came into his carefully controlled and organized life and made things chaotic and messy.

“Are you sick?” he asked.

“Sick? No.”

“Dying?”

“No.”

“Is anyone dying?”

“No.”

“Are you married?” He braced himself. He knew very little about this woman, actually, and if she belonged to someone else, he’d… leave her alone. And hate that man. And never forgive her for stirring him up like this.

“Absolutely not.”

“Engaged?”

“No.”

Okay, that was all…way too much of a relief. He should not be this happy to hear that.

“Did you kill someone?” he asked.

She tipped her head, her mouth curling. “Is that a definite deal-breaker?”

No, probably not. Knox narrowed his eyes.

“No, I haven’t killed anyone.”

“Are the Feds looking for you? Or will I be implicated in some kind of crime if I let you in?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

“That’s not a no.”

“I’m just being honest.”

Fair enough. Fiona was a wild animal advocate. The type of person to show up at roadside petting zoos and ‘circuses’ to monitor how the animals were treated and hand out literature to people attending the events, raising awareness about the poor conditions and treatment of those animals. She showed up to help rescue and care for animals, wild and domestic, after natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires. She regularly lobbied local, state, and even the national government for animal protections.

The chance that she could have done something in the “gray area” for one of her causes was pretty good.

The problem with that was he knew that wouldn’t keep him from wanting her.

She was precisely the kind of woman he should be avoiding.

He studied her face for another long moment, then gave in to the inevitable. He pushed his door open.

“Yeah?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

She wasn’t dying, wasn’t married, and hadn’t killed anyone. And he wanted her more than he’d ever wanted another woman in his life. So how was he possibly going to shut the door on her? After three months of missing her? He wasn’t that strong. Or stupid.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

I’ve been so looking forward to Fiona and Knox’s story and Ms Nicholas did not disappoint.

This pair have awesome chemistry and have been circling each other for a good while now so the depth of feelings that they both had for the other was understandable and awesome; until a few big truths came out and then I wasn’t sure they were gonna make it!!!!

Fiona has the biggest heart, doesn’t think about herself nearly enough and will always do what she thinks is the right thing, even if it’s not the right thing for her!!

Knox, oh man, that big growly town manager has a squishy heart of gold, which we see throughout KMG. He had a pretty set idea of how his relationship with Fiona should go but I was rooting for him to get his head out of his backside and for him to see himself as she did….. that’ll all make sense when you read their story.

I adore this series, the Landry’s were as involved as they always are, there were surprises and secrets revealed and a lot of the craziness we’ve come to expect with our trips to Autre. Erin had me a little all over the place with this story but it was THE BEST WAY to end the BotBGW series….. and FINALLY we got to find out Knox’s first name… that was fun!!!!!

I am now impatiently waiting to meet some of the other Landry cousins in Erin’s next spin off series….

Erin lives in the Midwest, where she enjoys spending time with her husband (who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books), her kids (who will never read the sex scenes in her books), and her family and friends (who claim to be “shocked” by the sex scenes in her books).

Excerpt

You touch Indigo, and I will cut your nuts off.

That had been Buck’s warning to me after he’d caught us in my room that night.

But here I was, one hand on each corner of the towel, pulling it open to make the terry cloth taut.

“Ford.” Indi’s startled gaze locked onto mine. Her full lips parted in surprise. I quickly wrapped the towel back around her and tucked the edges, my fingers brushing over her damp skin just above her breasts.

Not quickly enough, though.

I’d had the misfortune of seeing all of Indi’s glorious and fully naked form before I managed to get her covered again. Except, who was I kidding? There was no universe where seeing Indigo Buchanan naked could be considered a misfortune.

My throbbing dick was a testament to that fact.

I’d wanted her when she was eighteen. Lusted after her hot body. Even with a second’s glance, I’d just seen she was still perfect. Her hips had filled out. So had her tits. All woman.

“Sorry,” I said gruffly, not meaning a fucking syllable. But I didn’t let go. I didn’t know what was wrong with me, but I couldn’t seem to step back. Couldn’t seem to relinquish control of her towel. Or hide my heated gaze. Maybe it was the strawberry scent of her shampoo.

“Don’t—” She licked her lips and glanced at my shirt, at the floor. “Don’t pretend you find me attractive. We both know it’s not true.”

I stilled. Processed. What the actual fuck?

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” My eyes popped wide. “Is that what you think? Seriously?”

She tried to pull back, and I was an even bigger asshole because I kept my fingers curled into the top of her towel. The soft swells of her breasts were against my knuckles.

There was no way I was letting her go now. Not until she knew exactly how far from the truth that statement was.

“Indigo, are you nuts?”

Her nostrils flared like she was about to get pissed off again, but this time I didn’t encourage it. This time I saw the hurt behind her anger, and it seemed important that I correct her notion.

“You’ve been a goddamn torment to me,” I blurted.

She went still and finally lifted her chin, her blue eyes wide on mine.

I saw into them. All the hurt. All the sadness. All the desire.

“You’re… That night… Of course, I find you—” Fuck it. I was never great with words. I had to show her. Make her believe.

My mouth stamped over hers, my tongue swept between her lips. Still holding the front of her towel with one hand, I cradled her head with the other and kissed the hell out of Indigo Buchanan with a full-on, no holds barred assault. Then I changed the angle and kissed her harder. Made her feel all the frustrated, pent-up passion I’d had simmering for her for years.

Years.

“Now, you tell me,” I said, breaking the kiss abruptly, leaving her gasping, her cheeks flushed. My dick was achingly hard as I rolled my hips against her. “Do you think I find you attractive?”

Indi did the worst thing imaginable. She teared up.

Then she slapped me.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Renee Rose & Vanessa Vale know how to write an off-the-charts-hot, snare your attention book and Hero was no exception. I loved this introduction to the Alpha Mountain series.

Indigo and Ford were awesome together. Their history had done a bit of a number on both of them, but especially Indie and Ford’s reaction when he finally found out the extent his and Buck’s actions and words had affected her showed his strength of feelings for his best friends little sister.

Ford was an all out alpha, protective, possessive and growly but caring and all in when it came to his girl. Indie was a really strong female lead. She was determined and focussed but loved with her whole heart, even when she wanted to hate Ford for how he had made her feel years ago.

There was enough angst to keep us guessing, the heat between these two could burn down the forest that Indigo worked in and the sense of family that was felt between Ford, Indigo, her parents and his team mates was fab.

Meeting the rest of the guys – as well as Ford’s grandma – was fun and I’m really looking inward to their own books. A little peek at who book 2 is about has me itching for their story.

A solid 4.5 star read.

BLURB

Only a bad nanny knows what it’s like to kiss the boss.

CEO millionaire, Max Fletcher is a single dad in desperate need of a nanny.

Cozy Barlow is in the middle of her self-appointed “gap year” and doing everything she can to detach from her past.

But when her sister begs her to interview for the nanny position of a high maintenance client, she doesn’t have a good enough reason to say no.

And when Max locks eyes on the twenty-something in a tie-dye sweatsuit who pitches the idea of daydreaming all summer—he prepares to give this bad nanny the boot.

One problem: Max’s little girl thinks this plus-sized in body and spirit nanny might be her new bestie, so she hires her on the spot.

Now Max is stuck with this bizarre woman who hates everything he represents—corporate greed, money, status, power.

But one stormy night when the power goes out, he discovers Cozy doesn’t hate him. In fact, he’s the leading role in her fantasies.

Fantasies, he would very much like to make a reality.

EXCERPT

“So that’s really your proposal as the nanny to my daughter for the summer? To do nothing?” I ask dryly, hoping this Cassandra person has a backup response that she’s going to pull out of her back pocket at any moment to save this horrible interview.

Cassandra nods proudly. “We’ll also do a lot of sitting. I’m an expert at sitting,” she deadpans.

“Okay…I think we’ve heard enough, Cassandra.” I move to stand, but she reaches out and touches my arm, halting me in my tracks.

“I said to call me Cozy,” she corrects with a wink.

The teasing look in her eyes causes my skin to tighten. I do my best to shake it off as she refocuses on my daughter to share with her the last book that made her cry. Her hand slides off my arm, and my eyes lock on the way her index finger trails off the fabric of my suit.

I’m left struggling to shake this silvery feeling her delicate touch has left on my arm, so I take a moment to inspect Cassandra a bit closer now that her focus is off me. Her facial features are round, a faint dimple appearing in her cheek as she talks animatedly to my daughter. Her alabaster skin is a stunning contrast to her nearly black hair cropped bluntly just above her shoulders. She has shockingly plump lips slathered in a pale pink gloss that thankfully doesn’t match the orange jumpsuit that looks like something a teenager would wear. Her ample curves indicate she’s very much not a child.

“How old are you?” I blurt out in the middle of my interview with this bizarre potential nanny. I blanch at how unprofessional of a question that is and curse under my breath. “I’m sorry, you don’t have to answer that.”

“I’m twenty-six, Big Daddy,” Cassandra replies with another wink and then immediately dives back into conversation with my daughter.

Big Daddy? I frown at that very unpleasant label. Jesus Christ, she is so unprofessional. No fucking way…over my dead body. This will not work. I click my tongue and bring out my CEO voice. “Cassandra…I thank you for coming in, but I’m afraid—”

“You’re hired!” my daughter bursts out, standing up so she’s eye level with me. She thrusts her hand across my face and reaches for Cassandra’s, mimicking me to a T how I’ve handled many successful boardroom transactions.

My mouth hangs open as I sit frozen, watching Cassandra stand in what feels like slow motion to take Everly’s hand and accept the offer.

“This is so awesome!” Cassandra shakes Everly’s hand so hard, she starts to giggle. “This summer is going to be GOAT!”

“Goats?” I exclaim, finally breaking free of my stunned-stupid response to my daughter taking over this meeting. How is Everly so charmed by this…this…I don’t even know what to call a person like Cassandra. “No one said anything about farm animals.”

Cassandra and Everly burst out laughing like they’ve been buddies their entire life. Everly places her slender fingers on my shoulder in a way that makes me feel like the eleven-year-old in the room. “Dad, GOAT means greatest of all time.”

My shoulders slump. “Oh.”

Everly leans over to Cassandra and whispers loudly, “I’m so glad this worked out. If we didn’t hire someone today, my dad was totally going to get a case of his stress poops again.”

“Everly!” My eyes fly wide when Cassandra turns her green gaze at me. I push a nervous hand through my hair and quickly rush out, “I don’t get stress poops. I don’t know what that kid’s talking about.”

Cassandra reaches out and pats me on the other shoulder. “Hey Mr. Fletcher, no judgment here. Maybe you should try some of that kombucha in the waiting room that you won’t let your staff have? It’s really good for the digestive system.”

I groan and pinch the bridge of my nose. This summer is going to be a disaster.

Read on for an Excerpt!

It’s the medic from earlier, the curvy one with the long-ass black hair. I’m closer, this time, and up close, she’s even more stunning. Her face is perfectly symmetrical, her eyes huge and brown, her lashes thick, lips plump and in a naturally perfect cupid’s bow. And shit, the way her medic blues fit her insane curves leaves my jaw damn near on the floor.

She doesn’t even register me standing at the entrance, mere feet away: there’s a godawful ruckus coming from the back of the bus. She yanks open the rear doors and heaves herself up and in.

“Mr. Wilson, you need to calm down.” Her voice is hard, commanding. Short-tempered. “If you keep kicking up a fuss like this, I’m going to be forced to sedate you.”

“I DON’T GIVE A FUCK, YOU DUMB BITCH! LET ME GO! LET ME GO, GODDAMMIT!”

The medic goes flying backward out of the bus, landing on her heels and quick-stepping backward. Instinct takes over, and I lunge forward, catching her in my arms. For a split second, I’m just holding her. She’s equal parts taut and firm, lithe and soft, delicate and warm. And for that split second, she seems tempted to just…relax into my arm. Let me hold her.

A spark jolts through me, like I grabbed onto a live wire. My skin tingles, my hair stands on end, and my lungs seize, breath whooshing out of me.

I’m hard as a fucking diamond, behind my pants.

The split second is gone, and she’s rocketing out of my arms like she felt the shock as clearly as I did. She shakes herself like a dog shaking water off, storming forward with her fists clenched.

“That’s it, Mr. Wilson,” she grits out between clenched molars. “I told you.”

Mr. Wilson is a wiry old white guy, with a shock of hair that looks like he stuck his fingers in an electrical socket. He’s wigged the hell out, thrashing like a madman despite being restrained by the gurney straps. The other medic, the young Black man from earlier, is trying his damndest to hold the old man down, but it’s like trying to wrestle a wet horse.

I grab the sexy medic’s arm and hold her back. “Let me.”

“The fuck I will,” she snarls.

I’m already climbing up and into the bus, ignoring her protests. I latch onto the patient’s wrists and pin his thrashing feet to the gurney with my hips. I fix him with my you’re gonna listen like it or not glare, and make it clear no amount of thrashing is going to budge my iron grip.

“Cool the fuck off, old man.” I growl the command. I let go of one of his wrists, pinioning them both with one hand, and hold out my empty hand. “Needle.”

I feel the syringe slap into my palm.

“You got two options, here, pal.” I flick the cap off the needle and press the tip to the outside of his skinny little bicep. “One, you quit the tantrum and get yourself treated like a goddamn adult. Option two, I jab this shit into you, and I can’t guarantee how gentle I’ll be. You feel me?”

He stills, but his eyes snap with defiance. “Get off me.”

“Wrong answer.” I press the needle harder. “Last chance.”

“Fine, goddamnit, fine. That shit constipates me.”

I snicker. “Then quit acting like a child.”

“I don’t need no ambulance. I’m fuckin’ fine.”

The Black medic coughs a laugh. “You had a stroke two weeks ago and you just overdosed on Vicodin. You’re not fine.”

I blink. “How is he alive? Much less upright and pitching a tantrum?”

The medic shrugs. “Hell if I know. Bastard isn’t human.”

“I heard that you goddamn—”

I silence him with a glare. “You better not fucking finish saying what I think you’re about to say.”

He holds up his hands. “I wasn’t gonna say that. I ain’t no racist.”

“Get out of my bus,” a female voice says from behind me.

I climb backward and out, turn to face a very pissed-off but still drop-dead sexy medic. “What’s his story?”

She just glares at me. “I didn’t ask for your help.”

“You’d be the one getting stitches if I hadn’t caught you.”

She just glares. “My bus, my patient.”

I hold up my hands. “Fine, sorry for nothing, then. Damn.”

She reaches for the syringe still in my hand. “Give me that.” She snatches it from me as I extend it to her. “You can’t threaten patients. Who the fuck trained you?”

“If the patient is acting a fool and risking the safety of the medics trying to help him, I sure as fuck can. I didn’t threaten him, anyway. Not with anything you weren’t about to do.”

She goes nose to nose with me—well, nose to collarbone, since she’s several inches shorter than me; her glare is impressively intimidating, but it’s somewhat undercut by the fact that as she sidles up and stands nose to nose with me, holding her ground and glaring fit to murder, her breasts press against my chest, and that’s all I can fucking think about.

“My bus,” she repeats, slowly, furiously, “my patient. Go back to your fire and your hoses and leave me the hell alone.”

I hold her gaze and try like hell to keep my eyes from wandering down to her generous, button-straining chest.

I fail.

Her hiss of disgust is…well, if it could be used as a weapon, I’d be dead.

She presses all five fingers of both hands into my chest and pushes me away, eyes stabbing murderous fury into mine. “Go…away.”

I back up slowly, holding her eyes. “You’re welcome.” I wink at her, shooting her the grin which, according to the guys at the station, is guaranteed to melt panties at fifty paces.

She growls like a cornered raccoon; her panties are decidedly not melted.

I hold up my hands palms out. “Damn, girl. Don’t shoot. I was just trying to help. It’s instinct.”

“Well take your instincts and fuck off.” She pivots away from me, heading toward her bus, where the Black medic is currently wrestling the gurney down, the patient still muttering imprecations under his breath.

Fuck, fuck, and double-fuck—the girl is all curves. If her tits were about to pop the buttons off her shirt, her ass is popping the seams of her uniform slacks. Not tall, maybe five-six, five-seven at most, she’s one hundred percent hot-as-fuck, mind-altering, cock-hardening, dead-sexy curves.

I don’t even try to not stare at her ass as she helps pull the gurney off the bus. I can’t not stare—it’s a biological imperative.

She stops and shoots a glare at me over her shoulder. “Quit staring at my ass.”

“I’m trying, I swear. Not my fault you’ve got an ass that don’t quit.”

There’s a muffled cough from her partner, and his eyes cut to mine, expressing amusement he dares not otherwise let her see. “We’d better get Mr. Wilson into treatment before the sheer stubbornness that’s keeping him alive wears off.”

I finally manage to rip myself away from the sexy medic and her hypnotic ass. Head for my truck, climb behind the wheel, start the motor…and go nowhere.

She’s pushing from the back end while her partner pulls from the front—I just can’t resist one last long, lingering look as she vanishes inside.

“That is one hell of a woman,” I say out loud.

She hates me, but goddamn is she gorgeous. And honestly, the fiery fury of her is intoxicating. I don’t know her name, but I know I’ll be dreaming about her tonight.
