Tease
(Temptation #4)
by Ella Frank

Four years ago I met a man

who forever changed my life.

He dared me to try.

I dared him to love.

And while that’s where our story began, it’s certainly not where it ended.

-Tate Morrison

Excerpt:

“Hello, counselor. How’d the big case go today?”

Tate had been eyeing the clock all afternoon waiting to hear the outcome of the Berivax trial, and while he was happy it was finally going to be over, he also hoped all of Logan’s hard work had paid off.

“When was the last time we had sex?” Logan’s question was so blunt and unexpected it had Tate stumbling over his response for a second, and when he didn’t answer, Logan continued, “You don’t know, do you?”

The side of Tate’s mouth twitched at Logan’s disgusted tone. “Well, to be fair, you caught me off guard. I had to think for a minute.”

“And now that you’ve had time to think?”

“Umm…”

“Oh my God. You can’t remember,” Logan said, and Tate couldn’t stop his laugh then. “That’s fucking shameful.”

“We’ve just been—”

“Don’t say it—”

“—busy.” Tate headed over to the door that separated the bar from the tiny foyer and stairwell that went up to their loft, shut it behind himself, and took a seat on one of the steps. “Well, we have been. This case of yours has taken up most of your time, and with the bar hours we just got…busy.”

“Yeah? Well, that shit needs to stop. Right now.”

Tate leaned his shoulder against the wall and shut his eyes, picturing Logan with his jet-black hair, those piercing blue eyes, and that full, sensual mouth. Tate had barely had time to say goodbye to him this morning, and no matter how much he was laughing it off, Logan was right—this not seeing one another was bullshit. They needed to sit down and work something out, now that Logan’s schedule would be returning to something more manageable.

“Agreed,” Tate said. “Something needs to change.”

“Good. How about we discuss it at dinner?”

Tate winced. “I’m here until one.”

“Can’t you beg Amelia to stay and come meet me?” Logan asked, and if he hadn’t sounded quite so desperate, Tate might not have caved.

“Depends.”

“On?”

“What am I going to get if I come to you?”

Logan’s voice lowered to a tone that never failed to make Tate hard. “Me. All night. And maybe again in the morning. I’m in a giving kind of mood.”

Tate swallowed and stretched his legs out in front of himself, suddenly needing a little more room in his jeans. “All night, huh? It’s been a while since that happened.”

“It has. So come find me and I’ll rectify that little issue you’re having with remembering our weekend away at the cabin. That was the last time my cock was inside you.”

“Jesus, Logan.” Tate pressed a palm to his erection, recalling the weekend trip they’d made around three weeks ago. Or maybe it was four. Shit, okay. They did need to work something out if he was having trouble remembering that. “Let me get things settled here and I’ll be at your office in”—he checked his watch—“an hour? Hour and a half?”

“Perfect,” Logan said. “I’ll be waiting.”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

I was so excited when Ella Frank announced she was giving us more Logan & Tate but lordy….. I’d nearly forgotten just how good these guys are together!!

Tease finds the fellas 4 years into their relationship and, like real life, work and other commitments have gotten in the way of the importance of spending quality time together and living life to the full, but this doesn’t sit well with either of the guys.

The depth of their relationship, the friendship and caring, the all out love and continued attraction this pair have for each other is palpable and has grown since we last encountered them!

A great read – where the humour and banter between the two is as entertaining as ever – sees both men looking further to the future, we get a chance to reconnect with some characters and we catch up with Cole & Rachel.

I cannot wait to see what else Ella has in store for our favourite couple!!

This fab read gets 5 tease-tastic stars!!!!

BLOG TOUR ~ GOING IN DEEP (Billionaire Bad Boys #4) by Carly Phillips

SBPRBanner-GID-BT.jpg

Going in Deep, an all-new sexy and emotional second chance
standalone by Carly Phillips is now available now!!

deep_amazon

He isn’t Mr. Nice Guy…

Julian Dane thought he’d hit rock bottom — until he met a woman (isn’t that what they all say?). He used her and broke her heart. Now he wants to turn things around but the damage he dealt stands in his way.

Kendall Parker’s unique issues have made it hard to live a normal life. Very few people understand her and she trusts even less … but she believed in Julian once, and he only betrayed her.

Now Julian is back — a new man — and determined to win Kendall’s heart. But this reformed bad boy just might find that Going in Deep is harder than it looks.

All Billionaire Bad Boys Novels stand alone!

Excerpt:

New leash and collar in hand, Julian walked into For Paws to pick up his new dog. He was excited to have a pet, happy to know he’d have company, and dammit, looking forward to seeing Kendall again.

When he arrived, she was nowhere to be found. Josie, the other woman he’d met, walked him through the signing of the paperwork, reiterated his responsibilities, and congratulated him on his new family member.

“Are you ready to go get him?” she asked, oblivious to Julian’s disappointment in missing out on his chance to see Kendall again.

“Sure thing. Let’s go get Steve.” He followed her through the back door and into the area where the dogs were kept.

He glanced down the row to Steve’s pen, where to his surprise, Kendall sat with his dog on her lap, petting his head and talking to him in a soft voice.

Julian let out a breath he hadn’t been aware of holding, relief and pleasure suffusing him in equal measure. He wouldn’t have to leave without talking to Kendall.

“You’re going to a good home,” Kendall said softly, unaware they were behind her. “You’ll be well fed and loved. And even if I won’t see you anymore, I’ll always remember you.”

“It’s hard for us not to get attached,” Josie explained quietly. “Kendall has a soft spot for Steve because he’s been here for such a long time.” Josie treated him to a warm smile. “I’ll leave you now. Kendall can get you settled from here.”

Josie stepped away, heading back to the front office. Julian stood in silence, watching Kendall. Her head was bent low, her long ponytail falling over one shoulder, her neck exposed. The desire to glide his lips over the exposed skin was strong. The urge to mark her there, even stronger.

Something about Kendall affected him deeply.

As he walked quietly closer to the pen, once again he was struck by the quiet strength in her now, the even keel to her mood compared to before. He’d known she was smart, but this woman clearly had depths he hadn’t seen or plummed. And he realized how much he wanted to know her again. To learn who she was now and to introduce her to the man he’d become. The one he wanted to be, in part, for her.

At the realization, he blew out a sharp breath.

As if sensing him, she looked up. She stood, the gray dog still in her arms.

He smiled. “Mind if I ask you something?”

“Go on,” she said warily.

He took in the protective way she cuddled Steve against her chest. Steve wasn’t tiny, and it couldn’t have been easy to hold him for long.

“Why didn’t you take him? You’re obviously bonded,” he said, as the dog licked her neck. The lucky bastard.

She sighed. “My building has a one dog only rule. And you’ve met Waffles. Besides, we can’t save them all ourselves, as Josie likes to remind me.”

He inclined his head. “Then your loss is my gain.”

She shifted the dog and held him out for Julian. He accepted his new pet, juggling him with the leash, and held him up, meeting his gaze. “Looks like it’s you and me, Bud. You ready for your new life?”

BLP REVIEW ~ Tracy

Love reconnecting with Julian and Kendall in Going in Deep…. was great seeing how they had both changed but discovering that the connection was still there!!

Reading the first couple of books in the Billionaire Bad Boys series I really disliked Julian and, being honest, wasn’t a huge fan of Kendall but having discovered more about them and kinda understanding what drove them to the actions the carried out I slowly came round in my opinion of them both.

Both leading characters had some pretty hefty demons and baggage and when they were together initially they were probably the wrong combination but reading their story you could see how they were miserable apart and that going in with all of the information they really needed a relationship between them could work.

I was a little disappointed in Kade and Lexi and their reaction to Kendall for a fair bit of the book – even though at times they thought they were doing things for the best!!

Enjoyed catching up with the previous 3 couples and watching Kendall and Julian try to get things back on track.

Carly Phillips gave us a great end to the series with this book ~ 4.5*

Kimberly vowed to protect her heart from Sage, but when her sister is murdered and her world starts to fall apart, he’s the one person she finds herself leaning on.

Getting a second chance is something Sage knows is rare. He’s not going to squander the one he’s been given, and he won’t take no for an answer when it comes to making Kim his.

But what Sage doesn’t know is Kim has a secret that could leave them both devastated and heartbroken.

EXCERPT:

“He apologized. Don’t you think you should do the polite thing and at least hear him out?”
“I don’t know.”
“You don’t know, or you’re just too scared to find out what will happen if you do?”
“Do we have to do this right now?” I sigh, and he tosses his arm around my shoulders and pulls me into his side.
“We’ve been doing this for months now. I’ve seen the way you look at him when you think no one will notice, and I see the way he looks at you, not giving a fuck if everyone sees. Even when he thought you and I were a thing, he still made it perfectly clear to those who were watching that if by some chance he got a shot, you would be his.”
“I really think you are reading way too much into this.”
“Am I?”

BLOG TOUR ~ Cat Scratch Fever by Sarah O’Rourke

Blog Tour with Review
Cat Scratch Fever by Sarah O’Rourke

Cat Scratch WP Banner
button-synopsis

Beau LaForte felt an internal pull to the beautiful, innocent Alexa Davidson. Oh, this was not the typical boy-meets-girl story. This was anything but typical. You see, Beau was a shifter – a panther – and the alpha of the pack. What his panther wanted, his panther got. And together, they wanted Alexa.
But when Alexa finds the pretty kitty lolling on her bed, she is determined to get him out — before he sheds more on her brand new sheets! Can Beau convince Alexa that she is his mate for life?

Instalove. Shifter romantic comedy. 23K words. Novella.

Cat Teaser Never Loose.jpg

button-excerpt

Taking a deep breath, Alexa drew herself up to her full height and steeled herself for a battle. Although, since she stood just an inch over five feet, she knew her intimidation factor was virtually non-existent, but she had to start somewhere. It was time for her to quit stewing over decisions she could no longer change and instead concentrate on the concrete facts regarding her current situation.

And the fact was there was a flipping cat in her bed! A gigantic feline fiend apparently intent on wrecking what was left of her birthday. Because, yes, there was a cat in her bed, and it was stinkin’ immense. Since when did ordinary cats – even if they were frickin’ panthers – get that big?

The simple answer was they didn’t. EVER.

And an even better question was – Why wasn’t she scared of it?

God knew, it had fangs that promised grim death to anyone that provoked it. Oddly enough, though, she felt not a single ounce of fear or distress standing in front of it. It was like she instinctively knew this animal would never cause her a single second of harm. In fact, the longer she looked into its eyes that glowed in the darkened room, the more convinced she was that the purring beast would do whatever was necessary to protect her. It was like she and the animal had some kind of weird, unspoken connection. It was a bond that she didn’t want and had never asked to share, but one that she couldn’t deny and wouldn’t change even if she could.

How fucked up was that? Maybe this was some kind of voodoo curse one of her disgruntled customers had wished on her when she hadn’t served their coffee quickly enough. Personally, she thought that might be a bit of overkill, but caffeine addicts were serious in Louisiana, and one did not play around when it came to providing quality coffee in the bayou.

“Why couldn’t you be a dog? I could have handled this if you were a dog,” she muttered as she rolled her eyes toward the ceiling and hugged herself. “Especially since I’ve always been a puppy person,” she continued to babble as she shut her eyes and continued chafing her hands up and down her arms as a bizarre electrical charge seemed to ripple through the air inside the tiny bedroom.

“Well, I think it’s safe to say that you are now very much a cat person. Or, at least this cat’s person,” a deep, sexy voice rumbled from the bed. “More specifically, you’re this panther’s person.”

Alexa’s eyes popped open as that rich, deep voice seemed to vibrate through her being. Screaming as she spotted an extremely real — and from what she could tell (even in the darkness) was an oh, so very naked man in her bed — she quickly lunged for the nearest makeshift weapon she could find. Sadly for her, the closest missile she could find was only her television remote, and that merely bounced off her interloper’s sculpted chest.

“Ouch!” her prowler growled, batting away the remote as she continued to screech, blindly searching for another weapon in the mostly dark bedroom. “Alexa, chère, settle down!”

Wait a second? Why did her trespasser know her name? And why did that southern drawl sound so familiar? Making a half-turn on her not-so-steady feet, Alexa fumbled for the light switch on the wall, relieved when her searching fingers found what they were looking for. Flicking the switch, she squinted as her unfocused eyes tried to adjust when the room was suddenly flooded with bright, artificial light. Finally able to see a few seconds later, she couldn’t help emitting a small squawk as she saw the nude man lounging in the center of her bed.

CANVAS

4 inked men.

1 is very, very bad.

He made me an offer.

One I accepted.

His friends made me another.

One I shouldn’t.

I really, really shouldn’t.

But I’m not that girl anymore. The one I left behind, the one who does what’s expected, the one who has no choice. The one with secrets. I ran away from that life, and hope it never finds me.

I can choose to do what I want, with who I want. Now. Finally.

I’ve heard the talk, the whispers, and all of the innuendos. I know what they do. All of them. Together.

Then I accepted his offer. He did things to me, he awakened things inside of me. He’s made me into something I never, ever thought I’d be. He’s the filthiest man I know, but he worships me with his lust.

How can I say no?
I was going to stay away from her.

Then they made me claim her.

If I didn’t, then they all would.

Together.

At the same time.

She’s mine.

I’ve got a past, secrets of my own. I’m not a man who does commitment, my life doesn’t allow it.

But then she appeared out of nowhere. She’s a mystery, a beautiful, innocent enigma, one I want to mark. Literally.

The problem is, I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop.

*18+ strong language and sexual content. A bit of a RomCom, a bit of suspense, it’s a bit dark, and, yeah, maybe a hint twisted.  The boys have got it all.*

EXCERPT:

“You Want Me To Use You Like Your Mine?”

Gripping the edge of the tub, I lower my face so I’m right in hers.  She has to hear every fucking thing I’m going to say.  “Let me tell you a little of exactly what I’d like to do to you, just so we’re clear.”

I wait for her to respond.

“Okay,” she says quietly.

“Good.  First, just so you know, I fucking hate leaving you so needy.  I know you need to come, and come hard.  If you were mine, I’d tie you to the fucking bed and eat you until you came all over my face.  That would be orgasm number one.  Then I’d slip a plug in your tight little ass, roll that greedy little clit of yours between my lips for a while as I fingered you, rubbing that tender spot in your sweet pussy, until your fucking toes curled.  Orgasm number two.  Then I might,” I lower my gaze to her hard nipples taunting me in the water.  Fuck it.  I take one between a finger and thumb and tease it.  “I might put some nipple clamps on these beautiful tits.  Then I’d fuck you.”  I inch my face closer to hers.  “Hard.”  I pinch her captured nipple.  “Deep.”  I stare into her eyes.  “Then, princess, after we both explode, I’d tell you to get on your fucking knees and suck my cock.”  I let go of her nipple and straighten.  “But only after I made sure you’ve been well taken care of.”

“I know our schedule’s fucked, but that face of yours is awfully grim.”

Startling at the full-blast Irish accent, Jamie’s head shot up and the phone slipped from his fingers, clattering to the ground. Pick it up, some instinct ordered, but he was too busy losing the rest of his fucking mind. The veneer of calm shattered and any hope of patience took a flying leap out the window.

Because standing in front of him was his stylishly dressed partner, a messenger bag over one shoulder, a coat tossed over the other, and silver-rimmed aviators nestled in waves of auburn hair. More times than he could count, Jamie had imagined Aidan with his natural hair color, and damn if the reality didn’t surpass each and every one of his fantasies.

Mouth dry, heart racing, cheeks burning, Jamie’s fingers twitched with the urge to weave through the long red strands. Reaching down instead, he grabbed his phone, held it between his palms, and wedged his clasped hands between his knees, forestalling his impulse. He tried to force out a “hello,” but his brain refused to cooperate, all the blood in his body having raced south where his jeans became painfully tight.

Fuck.

He was gone. So far gone. Past casual, past a crush, past simple attraction.

This was Aidan, sans disguises, and Jamie wanted him more than he’d ever wanted anything.

“Is it that bad a dye job?” Aidan asked, interrupting his mental breakdown.

“Ai—” he started, only to be corrected with a brogue-laced, “Ian.”

Jamie blinked, reminded that this was a disguise. It sure as hell didn’t feel like one. “I wasn’t expecting this.” His eyes raked over Aidan again, taking it all in. Dressed in jeans and a navy V-neck sweater, the dark blues set off his pale skin, the freckles, his autumn eyes, that hair…

“Fuck,” he muttered out loud.

Aidan shifted on his feet in front of him. “I said I was making a few more changes.”

“Yeah, but this—” he spread his arms wide, the motion totally inadequate “—is more than a fucking few.”

Their gazes locked, heat sparking. “Problem, Jamie?” Aidan’s eyes flickered down to the very obvious problem.

“You gotta stop that.”

He dropped his messenger bag and shrugged the coat off his shoulder. “Stop what?”

“Saying my name in that accent.”

“Mr. Walker, then,” he said with a smirk.

Way too smooth.

Jamie propped his elbows on this knees and covered his face with his hands. “God no,” he groaned. “Not that either.”

Aidan laughed as the buzzer went off on the conveyor behind them.

Leather smacked the backs of Jamie’s hands, and he snagged Aidan’s coat before it hit the ground.

Leather?

“Cover that up,” Aidan said, eyeing his crotch. “And get yourself together. Debrief in the car.” Turning, he headed for the spinning luggage carousel, giving Jamie a prime view of his sinfully fitted jeans.

Get himself together…

Yeah, right.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ ~ Kilt Me (A Real Man #12) by Jenika Snow

kilt me release day.jpg

He’ll show her exactly what’s under his kilt.

Molly

The first time I saw Mr. McGowan, he was walking into our class wearing a kilt. Our substitute professor, he was big and brooding, masculine, and had a sexy Scottish brogue going on.

Maybe I didn’t need that extra tutoring, but I sure as hell wanted it.

Alastair

I noticed Molly the moment I stepped into the classroom. She was the wee lass with the fire-colored hair, the intense green eyes, and a body that had me burning alive. I didn’t want to look away from her because I knew she was mine.

Maybe there was a rule about staff not fraternizing with students. But given that I’m just the substitute professor, and that I wanted her like a fiend, I was about to cross some lines and break some rules.

Warning: You ever wonder what’s under a man’s kilt? Well, this story won’t leave you in the dark. It’s short, of course filthy, and has a Scottish hero with a sexy brogue. He only has eyes for his heroine, and will teach her a thing or two about how good it can feel to get dirty.

Molly

It was a hot May day, hotter than I ever remembered it being before. My hair was sticking to the back of my neck, and I grabbed a hair tie and lifted the long, heavy locks off my nape. After tying it in a messy bun, I glanced around the room. Everyone seemed miserable.
I was tempted to just leave, to skip this class and head back to my apartment to take a cold shower, but before I could do anything, the door opened. I expected to see Mrs. Lane walk in, her big belly rounded, her expression annoyed. She was due next month, but she looked miserable every time I saw her.
But it wasn’t Mrs. Lane who stepped through the door.
The air seemed to get hotter, thicker, and the room grew silent as everyone stared at the man who was like no one I had ever seen before. And I didn’t mean that in the literal sense.
“Good morning, class. I’m Alastair McGowan, your substitute professor as Mrs. Lane is no’ able tae be here.”
He had this thick Scottish brogue going on, but then again he was wearing a kilt. God, and does he look good wearing it.
He set his briefcase on the desk, turned to face us, and my breath stalled. The substitute professor was over six feet tall, heavily muscled, and had this commanding persona that surrounded him.
I shifted on the seat, my dress sticking to my legs, my body heating, which had nothing to do with the fact it was hot as hell in this room. I’d been attracted to plenty of guys, but this was unlike anything I’d ever felt before.
It was a desire that was intense, consuming, and had my brain in this fog.
And the one dirty thought that kept slamming into my head, over and over again, was … what’s under that kilt?

* * *
Alastair

I saw her sitting in the back, her red hair this fiery mass atop her head. The room was stuffy, hot, and even from the distance I could see the light droplets of perspiration dotting her temples.
If I dinna have self-control, I would have gotten hard right then. Just thinking about leaning in and licking away those droplets, and tasting the saltiness of her, could have made me so fooking hard.
But control was key.
She shifted on the seat, her dress riding up her thighs. Good God.
I moved behind the desk and took a seat. The battle with keeping my self-control was a losing one, and I felt myself start to get hard. Fook. I cleared my throat and looked at the wee lass that would be mine.
Fook the rules. I dinna care if she was a student and I was her professor for the foreseeable future. I dinna kno’ what had gotten into me, but hell, I was no’ about tae let this feeling go.
I kne’ what I wanted … her.
She’ll be mine.

Prologue

Present Day

Deuce

Death.
Many want to believe they’ll go peacefully in their sleep. After they have lived a long life, conquered their dreams and left their mark on the world.
No one wants to be murdered.
They don’t want to suffer.
They don’t want to scream and beg for a pardon.
A woman doesn’t want to stare at the man who swore he’d love and protect her. She doesn’t want to wonder why he won’t save her when there are four guns aimed between her eyes and one of them is his.
I can still feel her blue eyes pinned to me, silently willing me to do something. To rescue her. To be the man I promised her I’d be. I remember watching the hope fade from those eyes as the seconds passed and the safety on the gun clicked out of place. I can still place the moment when the drugs wore off and clarity filled her blue irises as she realized the end of the line was approaching.
Death.
It has a sound.
Bullets flew through the air, traveling faster than the speed of sound, piercing the skin I used to kiss, the body I once worshiped.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
That’s the sound of death.
Death also has a scent.
The gunfire died as blood poured from her body and stained the sheets. Gunpowder lingered in the air, mixing with the metallic scent of her blood creating the scent of death.
Death has a face too.
Worn features from a grueling life and lifeless blue eyes that a single tear falls from is the face of death.
Once a beauty, now a casualty.
The bible portrays death as a new beginning. If you’re a believer, once your blood dries and your body cools you think your soul will be lifted to Heaven. You wait for your Lord and Savior to welcome you into the afterlife where your every sin is repented and all the ugly shit that found its way into your life fades.
As a man who delivered death to those he called enemies, I never thought much about the scriptures in the bible. I didn’t believe the Lord suffered and died on the cross at Calvary. And I sure as fuck didn’t believe he rose on the Sunday that followed. But in that single moment, staring at the woman I loved, I wanted to be a believer.
I wanted to believe that wasn’t the end.
Somehow, someway there would be more.
More of her.
More of me.
More of us.
In life, we’re given responsibilities.
In death, we’re given regrets.
A man can only pray to whatever hell he believes in that the two don’t bleed into one another. For a man is a failure when his responsibilities become his regrets.
If he’s smart he doesn’t do responsibility.
He lives free.
He dies free.
The dictionary defines responsibility as having the duty to deal with something or being held accountable for someone. Merriam-Webster fails to mention responsibility comes with the act of commitment. A person can assume responsibility, but he doesn’t truly accept it until he commits his heart and soul to the duty or person.
A roamer cannot commit to anyone or anything, especially not a self-proclaimed cowboy who is destined to ride his chrome horse to his grave. No, a man like me, who is wanted dead or alive by his enemies, isn’t meant to have responsibilities.
He isn’t supposed to commit.
He’s meant to travel the road paved for him by those who stole his soul and forced him into a life of sin. All the while he keeps pissing on the law as he eludes the men gunning for him and dodges bullet after bullet. He earns his patch and wears the title of an outlaw proudly.
He doesn’t walk away from tragedy to find grace.
He never gets the fucking chance to find his ride or die girl, the one who stands by his side when his life is a mess.
And he sure as hell never gets to commit the perfect crime with her.
He doesn’t get to claim her heart or watch as she steals his.
Unless the outlaw roaming is me.
Then he gets the girl.
He finds the Bonnie to his Clyde and laughs in the face of the devil.
I ease my conscience by telling myself I tried to fight the inevitable, that I warned Jack Parrish I wasn’t the right man for the job. Still, he handed me all the broken parts of a tortured woman and made me the man responsible for piecing her together.
I could’ve walked away.
I could’ve handed him my patch and kissed Brooklyn goodbye.
Instead, I committed to the task with my heart and soul.
Because even after she ratted me out to Rush and got my ass abducted, I knew we were meant to be in one another’s life.
Like a lit match to gasoline, Ally and I were made to create fire.
Beautiful fucking fire.
The kind that lights up the whole world.
The kind of fire no one forgets.
The type you never escape.
She was an angel who lost her way to Heaven, dancing in chaos and pain. And me, I was the demon sent from Hell to make it all go away. In my quest to be what she needed, I broke rule after rule and watched a beautiful angel find her wings.
I forgot about the sound of death.
I forgot its scent.
And I allowed death’s face to be a memory.
I laid Chelsea to rest and carved out a piece of my soul for her to keep.
Legend says when two souls are meant to be together, the devil will find a way to keep them apart. Being a man who tasted Satan’s tears and drank from his soul, I thought I had outsmarted him and escaped the halls of hell, but no sinner is ever truly free from consequence.
We all pay one way or another.
Some pay with their own lives, others pay with the lives of those they love.
Being a man who already lost one love, a man who watched one woman suffer and die before his eyes, the choice became simple. I chose her life over mine.
She says I saved her.
Tells me I showed her how to live again.
Maybe.
But her life is just getting started. She won’t truly live until I’m gone.
Until I’m a memory.
A place in time.
Lifting the bottle of whiskey to my lips, I drain the little that’s left and glance around the motel room. I used to hate this fucking place, bitched to anyone of my brothers who would listen, but these four walls became mine and Ally’s home. It’s here, in this room where she laughed for the first time in twelve years. It’s at that broken-down table she sat and tasted sushi for the first time. It’s through that bathroom door, inside the shower stall where she decided she wanted to create a bucket list. It’s the fucking bed that is now full of weapons where she gave her body willingly. The bed where she learned sex could be something she enjoyed and not something she dreaded. The bed where she laid with me and watched the movie Bonnie and Clyde a hundred times until she knew every word by heart. It’s this fucking room that lives and breathes the memory of the girl I fell in love with.
It’s here.
In the depths of hell with no way out other than death.
Rearing my hand back, I throw the empty bottle and watch as it smashes against one of the walls.
“Fuck,” I shout in agony as I swipe a hand over my face and fight for clarity.
In between the flashes of her smile and those intoxicating blue eyes, I find it.
I find my truth.
This is the end of the line and death is the wage of sin.
I take a step toward the bed and lift the bulletproof vest from the mattress. Clutching it in my hand, I stare at the guns scattered before me when I hear a knock on the door. Quickly, I slip my arms through the vest, secure it around my chest and reach for the closest gun.
Death has arrived and this time I am the face of it.
Striding toward the door, I pull the safety back on my gun and wrap my finger around the trigger.
“Deuce, open the door,” Ally pleads, causing me to pause mid-stride. “Open the fucking door or I’ll shoot the lock off.”
Pulling it open, I glance over her shoulder at the empty parking lot. She pushes her way inside as I turn around and kick the door shut. Staring at her, I bite the inside of my cheek and lower my gun. She places her hands on her hips and her blue eyes are ablaze as they lock with mine.
Fire.
Beautiful fucking fire.
“Thought I told you we were done,” I grind out.
“Yeah, you said a lot of things, Deuce,” she hisses. “I thought I’d remind you of some of them,” she says as she takes a step closer to me and purses her red lips. “One of the first things you ever told me was that I should stop waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel. Remember that? You told me I should strike the fucking match myself.”
“Ally—”
“Shut up, it’s my turn to talk,” she orders, closing the distance between us, poking her finger into my chest. “You told me to live for me, taught me to find what I want in life and encouraged me to follow my heart. I listened and it led me straight here, back to you.”
“You need to leave.”
“I’m not.”
“Ally, any minute this place is going to become a war zone. They know where I am, they’re coming for me and they won’t leave without a body,” I shout, grabbing both of her wrists as I bend my knees and level her with a look. “That body ain’t going to be yours. Now, for fuck’s sake listen to me, you need to get the fuck out of here.”
“No,” she shrieks, pulling free from my grasp. “I am not going anywhere, Deuce. I won’t leave your side,” she cries, tears slipping from the corners of her eyes. “I won’t do it.”
Ride or die isn’t a phrase, it’s her.
It’s Ally.
“I had a dream,” she whispers, wiping at her cheeks with the back of her hand. “I dreamt the whole world was burning in flames,” she continues as she turns toward the bed. Bending down, I watch her lift an 8 millimeter off the bed and turn back to me. “The flames died, the ash settled. All that was left was you and me standing side by side.”
Silently, I reach for the Velcro securing my vest and peel it back before I shrug it off and charge for her. Holding the gun with one hand, I thread my other one through her hair and cup the back of her head.
“I’m sorry,” I rasp. “So fucking sorry.”
“Don’t—” My lips fall over hers, cutting her off. I kiss her with everything I am and everything we could’ve been. I suck on her lip, slide my tongue inside heaven and take.
Take, take, take.
We make fire.
Beautiful fucking fire.
Then it happens.
The wind changes.
The storm rolls through.
The pipes sound.
The end of the line.
Pulling away from her, I hand her the vest and lean my forehead against hers.
“However this ends, whether I’m dead or alive, I love you, Ally. Put the vest on and take cover behind the bed and do as I taught you. Don’t think, just shoot. Fight to win. Fight to live,” I demand. “Fight for tomorrow.”
The engines grow louder.
I step back as she puts the vest on before I check to make sure it’s secure. Pressing a quick kiss to her lips, I toss her another gun and tip my chin toward the other end of the bed. She does as she’s told, drops to her knees on the side of the bed before she cocks her gun toward the window.
“Let’s ride,” I mutter as I grab the AK-47.
Before I can take cover behind the dresser, the engines die and the ambush begins as the bullets fly.
Spinning around, I pull the trigger repeatedly. Ally and I fire away aimlessly, fighting to see past the thick fog the gunpowder creates.
“I can’t see,” she shrieks.
Stepping to the side, I keep my finger on the trigger and attempt to cross the room.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Fuck!” I scream as a bullet pierces through my shoulder. My vision fades to default as pain sears through me. I force myself to push through, cross my good arm over my bad one and steady myself as I continue to shoot.
Something flies through the window and I watch in horror as flames instantly crawl up the curtains, signaling the harsh reality that the war is over. If we escape the fire, they’ll kill us before we have the chance to draw a breath.
“The bed is on fire,” Ally cries. “Deuce, what do we do?”
Turning around, my eyes land on the center of the bed and the piece of leather burning. I don’t need a closer look to know it’s mine. The charred patch stares back at me, offensively reminding me of where I came from, who I am and why I’m about to die—why Ally’s about to die too.
Before I can offer myself to them and hope they spare her, the fire spreads above us and the ceiling begins to buckle.
“GET DOWN!”
But I’m too late.
The last thing I hear is Ally scream as the ceiling collapses over us and the amber flames burn bright.
Fire.
A fire that lit up the world.
A fire no one will forget.
A fire we couldn’t escape.

Deuce:

The first moment I stared into Ally’s tortured blue eyes, my subconscious knew I’d never escape her. She called to the darkest part of my soul and made it impossible to ignore the strange pull I felt towards her.
Some things are just meant to be.
As long as we were both breathing, my heart would do time with hers. Like the famous outlaw lovers, Bonnie and Clyde, Ally and I committed the perfect crime. I claimed her heart, and she stole mine.
I only meant to save her.
To heal her.
Now, my past threatens to ruin her.
Wanted dead or alive, I’ve got her by my side and together we’ll ride.

Ally:

I thought the world forgot me.
That I had died at fourteen.

I’m a drifter.
A man born to ride through this world alone.
There used to be a time when I thought I was the rescuing type. I enlisted in the Marines and made it my duty—I was going to save lives.
I was going to be a true American hero.
But God had another plan.
Or maybe Satan did.
For everything I touch finds mortality.
I’m no hero.
I’m nothing.
I’m a veteran biker, a former nomad who survived war only to live in hell.
Now I ride with the Satan’s Knights of Brooklyn and I’m drifting into a different kind of chaos.
The kind that revolves around a pretty girl with intoxicating green eyes.
A girl who has the power to turn me inside out.
A girl who doesn’t need anyone to rescue her because she’s her own savior.
Until she’s not.
But a man plagued by war and the devil inside him can never be her hero.
“Gina Spinelli”
Strong. Independent. Fierce.
They are the three things I strived to be.
But sometimes being successful can be lonely.
Sometimes a girl just wants to be a girl and have someone take care of her.

Sometimes the strong become vulnerable.
Or worse, the victor becomes the victim.
Sometimes we lose control or in my case, it’s stripped from you.
Defeated. Broken. Haunted.
They are the three things I have become.
In my darkest hour, I admit defeat.
In my darkest hour, I need one person.
I need him.

EXCERPT

“HEY, DELANEY.” I SMILED easily, holding my hands out to my sides. “’S’okay if I join you?”
“Just for a game of hoops?” The gold-flecks in her irises turned almost black as she walked toward me.
“Yeah.”
“You’re on.” She shoved the ball at me.
I dribbled between my legs then raced off to the other end of the court. Four pumps of my legs and I swished that motherfucker in nothing but net.
Delaney wasted no time retrieving the basketball. She dodged every one of my lunges, heading down court like a missile.
She made a three-pointer from the line.
She was hotter than anything I’d ever seen.
A real tomboy, with a banging body and a great rack.
And the woman dazzled me enough that I forgot to catch the rebound when the ball bounced on the floor.
As she double-dribbled in front of me, I watched a drizzle of sweat slide down her neck.
Gulp.
“Play b-ball in high school?” I asked when I found my voice, shadowing her across the waxed floor.
“Point woman. All-Star states team.”
“Why football now?” Dodging in front of her, I stole the ball.
Delaney came right after me, fast hands trying to nab the basketball. “I’ll take sport anywhere I can get it.”
“Balls too?”
Because fuck yeah to that.
“Maybe yours.”
When she said that, I pretty much stumbled over my own two feet.
Delaney snatched the basketball, hit net, and I curled around her from behind.
The forgotten ball bounced . . . bounced . . . bounced . . .
Unbalanced, we dropped to the floor, Delaney landing on top with a gust of bright laughter. Her hair fell in my face, softly scented black tresses I puffed out of my way.
Horsing around, we rolled across the floor until I stopped on top of her. I held most of my weight off her, but when my groin connected with her pelvis, my chuckle turned into a deep groan.
“Oh damn,” she whispered.
Heat slammed me in the balls, and I was fully hard, my cock crushed against her pussy through the thinnest barrier of clothes.
“The rumors were true.” Her hand wandered low, and she slipped her palm beneath the waist of my shorts.
Warmth met my thick dick, and I pushed into her fist. “What rumors?”
Girth Brooks.”
I pulled her hand free and grinded against her as come prepared to unload from my cock.
“Do you always go commando, Free Baller?”
Her hips jutted up. Her lips found my neck. Her hot mouth and teasing tongue made me pulse harder against her.
“Am I crushing you?” Hurting you?
Uhhhn. Feels good.”
Fucking. Hell.
I dipped my head, just about to kiss her long and hard when the door banged open and a voice boomed out, “No fraternization, Holt!”
Goddammit.
I quickly jumped off Delaney then pulled her from the floor, sheltering her behind me.
Jeeesus, Coach D. Don’t you have a family to go home to or what?”
“Yeah.” He slapped his baseball cap against his thigh, scowling at me. “And I already done raised Philomena. Now I’m stuck straightening you dickheads out.”
I ushered Delaney past him and into the corridor, prodding her in the opposite direction. “All right already. Look”—I started ambling the other way—“I’m going to the men’s locker room. She’s headed to the lady’s.”
Mm hmmm.” Coach D replaced his cap and pulled the brim down. “Better keep it that way too.”
I listened to his whistle retreating all the way to the front entrance then another loud bang of doors. Sneaking back down the corridor, I reached Delaney just before she entered her locker room.
I grasped her arm, and she spun around, mouth open to shriek.
Ssshhh. Just me.”
Her feline-like eyes narrowed. “Boy, you are asking for trouble.”
“Coach D’s gone. We’re in the clear.” I released her and grinned. “Damn, you make me feel like a teenager. You know that?” I squinted at her.

He was a bit of a player but has realised that this is no longer how he wants to live his life, partly because he’s getting older but also due to changes in his family circumstances. I really liked the guy! He was unapologetic for the life he had led and was genuinely interested in changing his ways.

Mia was a real contradiction once we got to know her… A quiet woman, she has sequestered herself away in her cottage, with nigh on no contact with the outside world – with the exception of her friend and the therapist she attends. Terrible nerves, panic attacks and the fear of being outside (apart from walks with her dog, working on her small garden and her valued time on the lake) has led to Mia cutting herself off and that’s just they way she likes it… or so she has led herself to believe.
When faced with Jared and an unusual situation when out on the lake one day she finds that maybe the life she’s been leading isn’t entirely what she needs any longer. Over a short period of time her life takes some unexpected turns that throw more than a few bumps in her up until now quiet life and reading about how she copes and deals with these events made for exceptional reading!

Mia’s fear and anxiety was palpable and her emotional roller-coaster ride with life, and Jared, played out with such depth. Freya’s writing conveys feelings and emotions to such an extent that, for me anyway, it’s like watching a movie reel in my head that’s showing the whole story in full technicolour.

I hate spoilers and you get the gist of the book from the blurb so I’m not gonna say much more about the storyline.

What I am gonna say is that Freya Barker has an immense talent that is terribly underrated.
She is now one of my top 3 favourite authors and an auto 1-C buy (I don’t even need to read the blurb!). I adore the fact that her characters are generally a little older, have emotional (and sometimes mental) baggage, they have lived a life that hasn’t always been easy and through their books they face new & difficult challenges and issues that could understandably send them running in the opposite direction but their strength of character and determination sees them face their fears, whether that’s their first choice or not, and makes them all the more endearing to us!

Packed with great relatable characters, main and supporting, drama, humour, heat and so so many feels, if you haven’t yet picked up a Freya Barker book you are seriously missing out! A Change in Tide would be a great place to start as it is a new series that you can dive into, but in my humble opinion, go back to the Cedar Tree series that was the start of her writing and begin there – I promise you won’t regret it!

Book 1 in the new Northern Lights series gets 5 tide changing stars!

Freya Barker inspires with her stories about ‘real’ people, perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy. She is the author of the Cedar Tree Series and the Portland, ME, novels.

Freya is the recipient of the RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for best first book, “Slim To None,” and is a finalist for the 2016 Kindle Book Awards for “From Dust”. She currently has two complete series and three anthologies published, and is working on two new series; La Plata County FBI—ROCK POINT, and Northern Lights. She continues to spin story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!
