EXCERPT

My ex gives me a once-over and smirks. “Oh, I get it. Looking for a husband.”

I try not to snort. He doesn’t watch the news—thinks it’s boring—and his family apparently hasn’t updated him about my new status. Maybe they disowned him. Wouldn’t that be great?

He continues, “I don’t know why you waste your time like this. Look, I’m happy to let it go if you’ll just see the light and change your mind about our—”

“Don’t hold your breath.” He’s dumber than I thought, bringing up the engagement when I still can’t find enough mind bleach to erase seeing him with my sister.

“There you are,” comes Sebastian’s voice from behind me. “Oh, hello, Preston.”

When he stops next to me, I put my arm around his waist. “What perfect timing.” I smile up at him.

He gives me a mildly curious look, but wraps an arm around my shoulders.

See? This is what you get when you’re with a smart man. He knows the role you’d like him to play without your having to spell it out. The fact that he’s willing to play along without some prior commitment to reciprocate warms my heart. So many people want something first before doing anything for me.

Preston’s brow knits as he takes in the tableau. “You guys are together?”

I triple the wattage of my smile. “Preston, have you met my husband, Sebastian Lasker?”

What?” His shout rings in the wide-open space. “You can’t marry him!”

“I can’t? Oh, that’s too bad.” I tighten my hold on Sebastian, pressing my side against his. “’Cause I kinda already did.” I extend my left hand, so Preston can see my gorgeous Toi et Moi ring and the wedding band.

Sebastian flashes his as well. Man, we make a great team.

Preston blinks rapidly, his eyes fixed on our hardware. Finally, he jerks his head up, his face blotchy. “Why would you want him when you could have me?”

“Seriously? Are you blind?” I ask.

“I can see well enough to know those diamonds are tiny compared to the one I was going to give you!” He points at my finger.

I drop my gaze to his crotch for a second before lifting it back up. “His is both bigger and better than yours.”

Preston looks like he just got punched in the face by Mike Tyson. Sebastian shakes against me in silent laughter.

“What’s so funny?” Preston snarls.

“You.” Sebastian lets the laugh out. “You’re third-rate comedy, but at least you’re entertaining.” He wipes tears from his eyes.

Preston turns to me. “You bitch! It’s all your fault he’s mocking me!”

Sebastian steps forward, pulling away from my arm around his waist, as the mirth melts from his face. “Watch your tone if you want to keep your teeth. Nobody talks to my wife with disrespect.”

I pat his back a few times, to let him know it isn’t necessary for him to react like this. Part of me is flattered and moved that he’s defending me, but another part feels a bit unworthy of his protection because… Well, I did force him to marry me.

Preston slashes the air with his arm. “She’s my fiancée!”

“She was. You call my wife your fiancée again, and I’ll break your face.”

EXCERPT

“What the fuck, Ashley?”
“Trevor. What are you doing here?”
“Last I checked, I live here,” I shouted as the burley naked jock before me hastily reached for his pants. He looked like a linebacker. The thought had barely left me before I noticed his shirt. The big W insignia confirmed he was most likely on the Washington football team. While visiting the training camp in Richmond had long been on my bucket list, I now wanted to kick that fucking pail down the road.
“I thought you’d be at work.”
“Obviously. How long has this been going on?” All thoughts of grabbing my assignment for my IT class were gone.
“I was going to tell─”
“Trev, we’ve got a call,” Jamie yelled through the door. I turned to notice he’d paused briefly to verify what he was seeing.
“When I get here in the morning, I want your stuff gone,” I’d spat.

That painful memory is charred into my brain. The betrayal made worse when Jamie later confirmed her lover was NFL player Martin North. He was 250 pounds of raw muscle. Nosey neighbors confided later he’d been visiting my home for months. I wondered why she wouldn’t have broken it off with me instead of sneaking around with a baller worth millions. Until Jamie’s continued investigation revealed, the player was just that. A married celebrity who was having an affair with my girl.

Since then, he’s left his wife and children, and he and Ashley have been on the local tabloid circuit. I couldn’t turn on the television or open a local magazine without seeing the two of them. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Ashley’s face was plastered on every billboard in town. If she wasn’t modeling jewelry for anyone traveling the interstate to see, she was painted on restaurant murals and large airport advertisements. She was fucking everywhere.

I’m aware I was partially to blame. I dove in headfirst. But there was never a moment I didn’t think both of us were all in. She’d wax poetic about our future, travel, and eventually having kids. But I guess it’s hard to compete with a larger-than-life superstar with a bank account to match.

I hadn’t had many serious relationships prior to Ashley. My plate had been full, beginning my career with the fire department and looking out for my mother.
My dad had fought a hard battle with melanoma. They discovered it too late to offer much hope of recovery. Cancer instantly decimated our flawless life. We’d gone from a tight family focused on Sunday dinners and the arrival of Noah’s kids to heartbroken in the blink of an eye.

My mother was tough as nails, but I knew it was a façade. Noah’s wife, Becca, would try to bring the boys over to distract her grief-ridden thoughts, but I imagined the lonely, depressing time between visits was suffocating. Unable to bear the thought of her hurting alone, I decided to move back home, convincing my mother I wanted to save money with plans to pursue my graduate degree. Hell, there’s no faster way to kill your sex life than living with your parents. But I slept better at night, knowing it was the right thing to do. I’ll always treasure that time with my mom.

Caring for her as we mourned my father, we grew even closer. We’d always had a tight relationship, but you don’t truly appreciate your parents until life throws you a curveball. I’d been blessed with a happy, loving cohesive family and knew I’d never settle for anything less if I chose to marry. Moving to Sycamore Mountain would be hard on both of us.
In hindsight, it’s clear I was merely mesmerized by Ashley’s physical splendor. Visits with my nephews hadn’t brought out her maternal side. However, like me, I figured she was at a different stage of life. She was focused on her modeling career. I’m not making this mistake twice. Getting caught up with some superficial bitch who’d leave the moment someone with a better reputation or bank account came along.

Lost in my thoughts, I didn’t realize what good time I’d been making. My eyes land on the bright green highway sign. ‘Welcome to Sycamore Mountain.’ Exiting the interstate, I quickly determine this is a one-horse town. As I approach the light at the end of the off-ramp, there’s a lone gas station, and I spot a fast-food restaurant across from a bait and tackle shop. Luckily, according to the GPS, the realtor’s office is only about ten minutes away.
Miles of desolate farmland interspersed with clusters of evergreen trees engulf the windows of my vehicle. Occasional picturesque hay bails are dotted amongst the tall grass, but otherwise, the scenic area is enchanting. Unspoiled by the strip malls and housing developments of Hanover. There’s not a billboard in sight. This thought briefly brings a relieved smile to my face until it dawns on me that I probably stand a better chance of meeting a bear in this town than a beautiful woman.
I might’ve had a better chance of getting laid living with Mom than here.

As I continue down the road, I stand corrected. There’s at least one female under sixty here. I spot a woman out for a walk with her baby along the grassy edge of the highway. Looking about, it seems an odd place to meander. While wearing yoga pants and a hoodie, I’m surprised at my fixation on her. I’m not usually into MILF’s. I’m in no way ready to settle down with a girl with a kid. But she’s got a fucking phenomenal ass. It’d be a crime not to look.
As I grow closer, my eyes are drawn to the face of the child looking back at me. That’s either the ugliest kid on the planet or…
Is that a chicken?

Excerpt:

Nate had given her a lot to think about on their drive, and no matter how much Mieka tried not to, her eyes kept drifting to his finger. Yeah, that finger as it gripped the steering wheel. Then, when she’d realize she was staring at his hands—particularly that finger—she’d move her gaze elsewhere, and of course, her eyes drifted down to the front of his jeans where a big peg apparently lived.

Damnit, she was in a dry spell. Like a major dry spell. Her stubborn cat was starting to pace and meow and demand attention. Not to mention those horny hornets in her belly that buzzed every time Nate smiled at her, or she imagined those big hands of his holding onto her hips as he plowed into her from behind over a hay bale.

Even though she’d been sleeping with that bartender back on the ship, it’d been over a month since they’d done anything, mostly because their shifts didn’t align. And when they did do things, he’d been mediocre at best. The man had no tongue skills, and zero stamina. Most of the time, Mieka had to get herself off after he came.

Yeah, Nate was right. A gentleman should always let the woman come first so she’s not riding a soft dick, limping her way to her own finish line.

Staring out the window, determined not to look at his finger or crotch anymore, she wasn’t even aware of the fact that she was chewing her nails until Nate’s voice broke her out of her trance. “I didn’t know you had ADHD,” he said. “When did you get diagnosed with that?”

She spun around to face him, but then dropped her eyes to her hands and the horrible chewed, red and tender fingertips. “When I was five.”

“And dance helps?”

“It keeps my mind focused and my body busy. I’m also medicated, which helps, too.” She shrugged. “It’s just a part of my life and who I am.” Her gaze slid to his. “But it’s also responsible for my fidgetiness, mood swings, impulsiveness and how my self-esteem can quickly take a massive nose-dive in a literal second.” Heaving a big sigh, she balled her sore hands into tight fists. Well, she did it with one hand and attempted to with the other. “I just do the best I can. Every day is a struggle. Just some days are more of a struggle than others.”

“If I’m doing anything to exacerbate that struggle, please let me know.” The sincerity in his blue eyes and his voice was touching.

“You’re not,” she said. “You’re keeping me distracted from wallowing… for the most part. So, thank you.”

They were already back at the ranch, so he turned off the road and rumbled the big truck and horse trailer down the laneway. A quick glance at the clock on the dash said it was just after five-thirty, so of course the petting farm would be closed to the public by now, which explained the empty yard and parking lot.

Nate exhaled. “I know it brings in money, and it was my idea, but fuck, it gets claustrophobic when we have the petting farm open. People, big and small, are everywhere.” He pulled the truck up in front of the barn, put it in park, and turned off the engine before hopping out.

Mieka did the same and met him behind the trailer.

“Feel free to go do what you need to do, Minx. I’ve gotta get this stuff out of the trailer and into the corresponding crates.” He grinned wide at her. “Good thing you were organized enough to color code everything ahead of time so I know which chair goes to which cabin.” He opened the trailer door to reveal boxes piled up to the ceiling. The bed of the truck was full of bedding, kitchen stuff, décor and everything else. The furniture was in the trailer and even then, not everything fit, so they paid for express shipping and the rest would arrive by tomorrow.

And just like he said, she had given each cabin a corresponding color code and put a big sticker of that color on the appropriate furniture. She wasn’t always this organized, but she was really passionate about this project, and appreciative of the trust Nate and Asher had put in her, so she was determined not to mess it up.

“I can help,” she said, watching Asher and Triss come down the front steps of the house.

“You’ve already done so much,” Nate replied. “It’s all good. Besides, we don’t want to hurt your arm.”

Asher sidled up beside his brother and whistled when he looked inside the trailer. “Don’t want to know what this cost us.”

“Then don’t ask,” Nate chuckled, hauling out a huge box that was part of a bed frame.

The two men went to work removing everything from the trailer and truck, while Mieka grabbed her leftover lunch and followed Triss inside.

“How was your day?” Triss asked, gauging Mieka carefully.

“It was good. We got everything we needed.”

Triss’s eyes fell to the fast-food bag. “Ah, you stopped at Gus’s. I take it you’re not hungry, then?”

Mieka puffed out her cheeks and shook her head. “I still haven’t even finished this. But it’s so freaking good.”

“I know. I’ve gone to Denver with Nate a few times and he always stops there. It’s good, but it’s definitely a treat. I’m like a snake after I eat there. That’s my meal for the week.”

“You’re okay that I’m going to skip dinner?”

Triss lifted a shoulder. “You’re an adult and free to do as you like. It’s why I haven’t put the meat on the barbecue yet.”

“The day here was good?” Mieka asked, pulling out the rest of her burger, taking a seat at the table and diving in. “We feel bad. We left when it was so busy.”

“Great day,” Triss said, taking up an abandoned spot at the counter to continue preparing a salad. “It was busy, but everyone had a good time. Fumble escaped again, so that was fun. Asher is so close to barbecuing that goat, I swear it.”

Mieka chuckled. “Apparently Ray’s auntie has a great recipe for jerked goat.”

About the Author:

A Canadian West Coast baby born and raised, Whitley is married to her high school sweetheart, and together they have two beautiful daughters and a fluffy dog. She spends her days making food that gets thrown on the floor, vacuuming Cheerios out from under the couch and making sure that the dog food doesn’t end up in the air conditioner. But when nap time comes, and it’s not quite wine o’clock, Whitley sits down, avoids the pile of laundry on the couch, and writes.

A lover of all things decadent; wine, cheese, chocolate and spicy erotic romance, Whitley brings the humorous side of sex, the ridiculous side of relationships and the suspense of everyday life into her stories. With single dads, firefighters, Navy SEALs, mommy wars, body issues, threesomes, bondage and role-playing, Whitley’s books have all the funny and fabulously filthy words you could hope for.

Blurb

Once upon a time, there was a grumpy CEO who met a wedding planner who never stopped smiling…

Cassie
You could say that I live and breathe weddings and love, and as a wedding planner, a happily ever after is the main event. So when I learn that Theo Abbot absolutely hates weddings, that should be my clue to run for the hills as fast as my sexy little black stilettos will take me.

But I digress.

I’m on the hunt for my own epic love story, one T-Swift herself could write a song about. Which means unavailable and seemingly uninterested CEOs are off limits. Even if the man oozes sex appeal and his grumpiness turns me to mush.

A little flirting never hurt anyone.

Theo
Cassie Winters shines so bright I need a pair of Ray-bans to look directly at her. Problem is, once I’ve set my eyes on her, I can’t seem to look away. The woman is a walking, talking promotion for all things love and happiness.

Hand me an antacid.

Counting, on one hand, the amount of times I’ve failed in my life, leaves me knowing I won’t ever do “love” again. I’m set in my ways and not even this sexy little spitfire could sweet talk me out of my decision to never get married.

Yet it only took one drink to derail that plan.

But, things aren’t always as they seem and when real life gets in the way of this fairy tale, we’re both forced to take a hard look at what we truly want.

Are we both ready to wed or is this a wildfire that’s about to burn out?

Excerpt

Copyright 2023 @Lauren Helms

I spot Cassie immediately, in the corner, at a table for four. I wonder if she knows it will just be us. Taking advantage of the fact that she hasn’t noticed my arrival yet, I take a moment to study her. She sits tall, facing the entrance, looking at her phone. She seems to be scrolling through an app as her lips tip up and her eyes glitter as she looks at what’s on her screen. There is an untouched water in front of her, but her menu is closed.

The sheer happiness that radiates off this woman irritates me. I don’t know why, but as I approach the table, what tumbles out of my mouth is unexpected.

“Let me guess, you just took the most epic selfie ever and can’t wait to share it with all your followers?” My tone takes on a mocking tone and immediately I want to take it back. Damn I’m an asshole.

To her credit, she doesn’t even bat an eye at my rudeness. Her face turns up toward me and she smiles. “Well, good afternoon to you too, Mr. Abbot.” She puts her phone down on the table and gestures toward the seat across from her. “Please, have a seat.”

And I do, begrudgingly, because being around this woman causes me to not just be my normal grouchy self, but clearly a prick as well.

As I take my seat, she slides her phone into her bag that sits on the floor next to her chair.

I clear my throat, my attempt to shake myself out of my head. “Nora won’t be joining us. I assume you already know.”

Now this does give her pause. Her brows dip. “No, I didn’t know. She didn’t…” her voice trails as a faint ding from her phone sounds from below. In the few times I’ve seen this woman, I think this is the first time I’ve ever not seen a smile on her face. She studies her smartwatch, clearly reading the message that just came in, her elbows still propped elegantly on the table, as I watch her realize that it will just be us for lunch.

Her creased brows even and she plasters on a smile as she drops her hands to her lap. “Well, her timing could be improved, but you’re correct, she’s not joining us.”

I can’t stop myself before barking out a laugh. She tilts her head, her features dancing with happiness. I shut down my amusement at her words and offer a terse, “Excuse me.”

“No, that was enjoyable to watch. I didn’t know you had it in you, Mr. Abbot.”

I make the decision, in this moment, to put an end to the formalities. “Theo. Please, call me Theo.”

Her grin widens. “All right, Theo,” and just as expected, the sound of my name on her lips fucking gets to me. I shift in my seat as she continues.

“So tell me how I managed to get that laughter out of you moments ago? I get a feeling it’s not a commodity around you.”

“Nora has always waited until the last minute when it comes to communication over things that may cause contention. You’ve known her a short time and already know her tells.” I pick up the menu, though I already know what I will order.

“Ah, yes, well, I read people pretty quickly.” She shifts the menu slightly on the table in front of her, not picking it up.

“Yeah? What’s your read on me?” I don’t know why I ask. Glutton for punishment, I guess.

This time she lets out a laugh. “Let’s keep this lunch civil and not go there.”

“If you liked Crazy Rich Asians, you’re going to LOVE Crazy Apologetic Canadians!”

I take one look at the grumpy Brit and know I’m in trouble. Not because he’s in Nova Scotia to tear down our beloved amusement park. Or because he wants to build an elite school on the lush property.
No, I’m in trouble because Colin Parker is superlicious – despite the stick up his British bum.
You see, I’m a free-spirited girl who knows her way around a lobster boat. He’s a rule follower who knows his way around a boardroom. Can you say polar opposites?
Oh, did I mention his mother is back in England planning his marriage? The sexy Brit with a debutante makes sense, right?
You know what doesn’t make sense? The two of us between the sheets and a montage of fun activities that finally put a smile on his face. But when the montage ends, and life turns messy and complicated—yet we still manage to find common ground—it leads me to believe we’re not so different after all.
Until he does the one thing that proves me wrong and I’m forced to make a decision I thought I’d never have to make.

#1

I hurry down the terminal, my thoughts distracted, and collide with some woman speed-walking past me. She drops whatever it is she had in her arms, and latches onto the sleeve of my suit jacket. The grasp pulls me off balance, and I stagger backward, breaking the tight hold. I dip my head and find a petite woman staring up at me, her blue eyes wide as she holds her hands up palms out.
“Sorry,” she says quickly.
Wait, wasn’t I the one who bumped into her? “What are you sorry for?”
She angles her head, her gaze moving over my face. “You’re British.”
I frown. “You’re sorry I’m British?”
“No, no!” Her long dark hair bounces on her shoulders as she repeatedly shakes her head. “For colliding with you, and…tugging on your jacket. It was a knee jerk reaction.”
“Touching strangers in airports is a knee jerk reaction for you, is it now?” I glance out the rotating doors leading outside and take in the streaks of purple and pink bruising the night sky above the large concrete parking garage. “Do you only grope in airports, or can I expect to be accosted once I step outside, as well?”
She frowns at me, and I get it. I’m grumpy as hell. It’s been a long day, and I missed my connecting flight, and now I’ve arrived at my destination much later than planned. My driver would have given up on me hours ago. Rightfully so. No one in their right mind would continue to wait for a no-show. I’m not about to call Bryant now, the guy who owns the bed and breakfast where I’ll be staying, and have him come back to the city at this point. From what I understand, it’s a good three-hour drive.
“I thought you were going to fall. Sorry I touched you,” she apologizes again as she picks up a sign she’d dropped and scampers off. Alrighty then. Her legs aren’t overly long, but she moves like lightning, the only person in the airport in any kind of hurry. She must not be a local, and I should probably tear my gaze from her cute arse, which happens to be nicely framed into a pair of frayed shorts, and put her out of my mind.
I straighten my shoulders, in need of a pint before I figure how and where I’m going to find another driver at this hour. I walk through the airport terminal looking for a pub, but a small store with gobs of Halifax, Nova Scotia merchandise catches my eye and reminds me I’m supposed to bring something back for my cousin’s daughter. Might as well get it over with, because the sooner I’m out of this place, the better.
I drag my suitcase along and adjust my leather bag over my shoulder as I step into Hudson News. With no idea what to buy an eight-year-old girl, I walk up to a rack full of plush toys. As I debate between a beaver and a moose, someone crouches down in front of me, her body brushing mine, right around the vicinity of my…dangly bits.
“Can I just scooch…”
I glance down, and realize it’s the groper again as she bends and reaches for something off the bottom shelf.
‘“Scooch?”
She straightens, a plush lamb in her hand, and her smile falters when her gaze lands on me. “Oh, you again.”
“Nice to see you, too,” I respond.
One manicured brow lifts, as the strap on her tank top slips a bit, exposing a hint of a lacy bra. “Is it?”
“Is it what?” I ask as I snatch up a beaver.
“Nice to see me again?”

#2

“You can take the front. Sounds like you two have a lot of catching up to do, and I’d like to check my emails,” he replies.
“Suit yourself.” Emily flips the seat forward, and gestures for him to climb into the back. He puts one leg onto the floor of the back seat, pushes forward and grunts. I’m about to circle the car, but notice he’s not moving, or grunting. I’m not even sure he’s breathing. Great, I think we’ve killed him. We certainly have the motive. As I glance around, and contemplate on how to hide, or even move, the body, a loud groan reverberates through the near empty parking garage.
“Violet.”
“Yeah.”
“I’m…stuck.”
I admire his perfect ass, wedged between the back seat and the frame of my car. “Um, do you want me to push?”
“I think maybe you should pull.”
I take in the angle of his body and consider the logistics. “What do you want me to pull?” Emily chuckles beside me and I nudge her with my elbow. “Stop it.”
“Ow,” she complains.
I glare at her. “You’re not helping.”
She snaps her gum, enjoying this entirely too much. “What am I supposed to do?”
“I don’t know. Go around the other side and push on his head.”
“I thought that’s what he wanted you to pull.”
“Ohmigod!” She grins, clearly proud of her quick-witted sexual innuendo. “Do you want to walk home?”
The car rocks as he tries to free himself, and I pray to God he hasn’t heard Emily, or think in any way that I want to pull his…anything.
Emily drops her gum back into her purse. “Fine.”
She circles the car, and I step up to him. “I’m going to put my hands on your hips and pull, okay?”
“Yes, I believe that will work.”
Pity once again hits me. The man is obviously embarrassed. The British are so stiff—do not think about head and stiff.
Dammit, I’m thinking about it.
Let me try that again. The British are stoic and reserved, and this must be mortifying. Then again, maybe he’s none of those things. People have misconceptions about Canadians too. Yeah, okay, it’s true. We’re ridiculously nice and overly apologetic. Sue me.
As he struggles, I take a fast second and consider drawing this out, letting him wallow in his embarrassment. I mean he is here to destroy our town, but because I only have one mean bone in my body—you did just hear me say we were ridiculously nice right—and I might need to use it later, I put my hand on his sides, and brace my pelvis against his rear.
Oh my.
I glance over my shoulder and pray no one is watching. The last thing I want to be accused of is bum-fucking some Brit in the back of my car. I’m not looking to cause an international incident here. I suppose I could just tell them I’m trying to remove a stick that’s lodged deep. That’s more believable, anyway.

#3

I stare at the gorgeous woman leaning against the wall, a come-hither look on her face, as she asks me if I want to get lucky. One of two things must be happening here. Either I’m in bed dreaming, or I’m hearing things.
“Colin, lucky…” she says again.
Fuck yeah.
I drop everything I’m doing. “You don’t have to ask me twice.”
There’s a playful gleam in her blue eyes as she cocks her head and says, “I’m pretty sure I just did.”
I walk across the room, each step determined, and put my arm around her waist. “You won’t have to ask a third time.” Her eyes go wide as I pull her to me, press my growing dick against her soft body and dip my head until my lips are just a breath from hers. My heart pounds a little faster in my chest, and I’m seconds from kissing her when I note the shock in her eyes. I inch back. What the fuck? Okay, maybe I really was hearing things.
“Violet?”
“The cat…Lucky. I meant do you want to get Lucky. You know our cat Lucky, and bring him upstairs for bed.” I try to settle my rattled brain as she rambles on, and the second understanding hits, I unravel my arm from around her back and step back until I hit the kitchen table.
“Jesus, sorry. I thought you…must be the allergy medication. Messing with my brain.” I adjust my cock in my boxers, and her gaze drops.
“And your…pants.”
“I think it’s from the dry weather here.”
A laugh bubbles out of her throat. “Yes, it’s usually wet where you come from, isn’t it?”
“Wet…yeah.”

From USA Today Bestselling author Adriana Locke comes a grumpy, blue-collar single dad that falls hard for his new nanny. This small-town romance is a standalone novel with tons of heat and even more heart.

Blurb:

This nanny makes things hard for her boss.

Chase Marshall is many things:

·               An attentive single dad

·               Jaw-droppingly gorgeous

·               My employer for the next thirty days

He’s also the bane of my existence.

He swears I’m a never-ending headache—the most infuriating woman he’s ever met.

If I’m so irritating, then what’s up with the lingering looks when he thinks I’m not watching?

The seemingly innocent touches while making breakfast?

The smirk that graces his kissable lips after one of our verbal spars after his daughter has gone to bed?

One minute he’s coming to my rescue. The next second he’s complaining about how I fold his work shirts. Fine. Fold them yourself.

It turns out that the only time I don’t get under Chase’s skin is when I’m under him.

And that’s where things get complicated.

Excerpt #1:

I rap against the glass with the back of my knuckle. “What’s going on?”

My hands go into my pockets, and I wait.

Nothing.

Frustrated, I clench my jaw. “Do you need help?”

“I don’t know.” Her voice muffled. “I don’t know what’s wrong.”

Okay? “Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Out of gas?” I ask.

“I don’t think so.”

Oh, for fuck’s sake. “Are you confused?”

“No, I’m not confused,” she says as if she’s offended by the question.

I roll my eyes. “Look, if you don’t need help, I’m gonna go.”

“My car was … steaming, and I pulled over,” she says, her voice shaky. “I’m afraid to try to turn it back on.”

“You mean steam was coming from under your hood?”

“Yeah. I pulled over and turned the car off. But I’m panicking because cornfields surround me… and now there’s a man at my window. This is how every horror movie begins, you know.”

I glance around. Tall cornstalks sway on both sides of the road—just like every rural road in southern Indiana this time of year.

“I take it that you’re not from around here,” I say.

“Not sure how that information is pertinent.”

The fuck? “Excuse me?”

“It just feels like a very personal question coming from a man I don’t know,” she says.

“Well, this man you don’t know is only trying to help.”

“I didn’t ask you to stop, sir.”

My eyes go wide, and I half-laugh. Fuck this. “No. No, you didn’t. Good luck to ya.”

I turn to leave when a knock comes on the glass. “Wait.”

Excerpt #2:

As soon as we’re alone, the air shifts. Shadows dance across the tabletop. Megan’s jasmine perfume scents the air, and my body temperature rises.

I struggle to remember our conversation yesterday. I remind myself that my child—the same one that occupied the seat next to me a minute ago—is my priority. Over and over, I replay all the reasons why I can’t afford to get off track.

Why I can’t touch Megan Kramer.

My muscles tighten in my stomach and across the back of my neck as I lift my gaze from the tabletop to her.

She grins. It’s simple, but when coupled with the heat in her eyes, there’s nothing sweet about it. “That was fun.”

I hold her gaze, unable to look away.

This is the first day, Chase. Twenty-nine more to go. Don’t blow it already.

I smirk and push away from the table.

I need to put some distance between us before things get really fun.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

4.8* – love, Love, LOVE an Adriana Locke book….

Chase and Megan were awesome. Their initial meeting was not great (though Meg’s complaining about him in the bar later that night was amusing) and then the next day Chase was not ready for Megan to turn up on his doorstep (quite literally, she was not the person he was expecting to arrive to help with his daughter – but his mother didn’t tell him about a change in plans!!)

Megan had returned home after her dream job ended but after her mum suffered an accident she agreed to help out with her mum’s best friend’s grand-daughter, Kennedy, for the summer.
The night before she’s due to start she gets a bit lost and a grumpy but hot guy stops to help her – the not so great interaction. Their conversation and thoughts here gave you an idea of how explosive they could be together….

Chase’s biggest problem and the reason why he was so reticent to Meg helping with Kennedy was the strength of his attraction to her.
Megan, once things were decided that she would stay with Chase and Kennedy, tried to quell her attraction to him but after a bit neither of them could deny how they felt and they stop fighting the connection.

I really loved how Meg bonded with Kennedy and that she jumped in to stand up and protect her, listening and doing the right thing where Kennedy was concerned.
This is where it missed 5* for me. I got that chase was tired and all when he got the story of what had happened but his reaction and words completely p’d me off.

I loved Chase’s brothers and I’m looking forward to their books and heading back to Peachwood Falls.

Adriana always hits the mark and ‘More Than I Could’ is another fab example of her great characters, funny banter, and the angst, emotion and heat she writes for her MCs.

Ever have a defining life moment you wish you could do over? Harley Spark has one. The time she almost kissed the widowed father of the toddler she nannied for. It was so bad they moved across the state and she never saw them again.

Fast forward seven years and she’s totally over it. At least she thinks she is. Until Gavin Rhodes and his adorable now nine-year-old daughter, Peyton, reappear at a princess-themed birthday party hosted by Spark House, Harley’s family’s event hotel. Despite trying to avoid the awkwardness of the situation, she can’t help but notice how unbearably sexy he looks in a tutu. Add to that aspontaneous hives breakout, and it’s clear she’s not even remotely over the mortification of her egregious error all those years ago.

Except Gavin seems oblivious to her inner turmoil. So much so that he suggests they get together for lunch. For Peyton’s sake, of course. It’s the perfect opportunity to heal old wounds. Or it could just reopen them. This is one of those times Harley wishes she could see the future…

“Do you know where Gavin is taking you for dinner?”

“Nope, he just said wear something nice,” I reply.

“Did you pick up some sexy lingerie to wear under your dress?”

“I guess it depends on whose version of sexy we’re talking about.”

Avery’s version of sexy lingerie is upgrading from a sports bra to one with padding and black bikini briefs. London, on the other hand loves,[HH1] all things lace and satin and delicate. I’m somewhere between the two.

London stops messing with my eyebrows and gives me a stern look. “Please tell me you bought new underwear for this date.”

“Who says he’s going to see my underwear at the end of the night?” I challenge.

“Oh please.” London props a fist on her hip. “Isn’t Peyton sleeping over at her grandparents’ place?”

“As far as I know, yes.”

“So he’ll be able to come back to your place and stay the night if he wants,” London says.

“Do you think I should invite him back to my place?” I glance between my sisters.

“Why wouldn’t you?” Avery rubs her belly.

“It’s our first date.”

Now it’s Avery’s turn to give me a look. “You’ve been seeing him on a weekly basis since July. It’s October[CD2] [HH3] .”

“Because of Peyton.”

“Uh, we all know that’s bullshit.” Avery makes a circle motion and points at me.

“I was in a relationship for most of the time I was spending with them,” I argue.

Avery rolls her eyes. “Chad was a nice guy, but he was a fun-for-now boyfriend, not a get-serious boyfriend. And he was way too into fantasy sports. No one should be in that many fantasy leagues. It’s not normal, and that’s coming from a self-professed sports junkie.”

“Still, don’t you think I should wait a while before jumping into bed with Gavin?” I bring my fingers to my lips then drop them to my lap so I don’t ruin my gloss or my nails.

“It’s whatever feels right,” London says. “And you want to make sure that you’re actually into Gavin on his own, rather than the Gavin-and-Peyton package.”

“How is she going to figure that out unless she gets naked with him?” Avery argues.

“Sex complicates things. You know that better than anyone,” London says pointedly. She’s referencing the way Avery and Declan nearly imploded back when they crossed the line from best friends to best friends with a lot of benefits.

“My situation with Declan is not even remotely the same as what’s going on with Harley and Gavin. Declan had major commitment issues, and I made a stupid mistake. Now we’re super happy and totally in love and having a baby.” Avery turns back to me. “I think you need to do whatever is right for you. It’s up to you whether you let him see your underpants.”

London sighs and shakes her head, then her eyes go wide, and she takes me by the shoulders. “Please tell me your underwear are not cotton.”

“There’s nothing wrong with cotton underwear. They breathe,” Avery says defensively.

“There’s nothing wrong with them in the general sense, but for a date and potentially the first underpants sighting, cotton is a no-no.”

“They’re not cotton,” I assure her.

She arches a brow and I sigh.

“They’re satin with a lace waistband and a floral print.”

“Okay. As long as they don’t have a cartoon pattern on them, we’re good,” London says with relief.

My phone buzzes on the vanity, Gavin’s name flashing across the screen. I nab the device and check the message. He’s just pulled into Spark House. “He’s here. I’m so nervous. Why am I so nervous?”

“Because you want to get naked with him,” Avery says.

“Because you like him, and you’re changing the dynamic of your relationship,” London says.

“And you want to find out if he’s got the moves between the sheets.” Avery grins. She gives me a fist bump. “Just remember, you don’t need to wait five dates before you get in the sack with this one.”

“But don’t feel like you need to rush into anything either.” London turns me around once to make sure my dress isn’t wonky in the back, and then they’re ushering me into the hall.

“Is it always this easy for you? To wave your hand and have all of your needs met? To incline your head and have minions jump to do your bidding? To ask and always receive?”

“Except with you.”

He narrows his blue-green gaze on me from across the expanse of the table. The candlelight highlights the golden-brown specks in the depths of his eyes and haloes his dark hair, turning it almost blue. The hollows under his cheekbones seem more pronounced, the dip in his chin seems more delicious.

I try to tear my gaze from his, but it’s as if he holds me in a tractor beam. Awareness tugs on and stretches the air between us. My heart begins to race. This is ridiculous. So, he’s good-looking. I knew that already. What I hadn’t realized is that hidden behind that polished mask he presents to the world is an untamed animal. A beast lying in wait to unleash that darkness inside of him. An edginess, a sharp wickedness that I never would’ve guessed he’d be capable of, but which I sense now lapping at the restraints that he’s placed on himself.

I curl my fingers around the stem of my champagne glass. “I didn’t say I wanted champagne.”

“You love champagne. It’s your drink of choice,” he declares.

My eyebrows shoot up. “And you guessed this, how?”

“Nothing a little bit of research didn’t reveal.”

I stiffen. “You had me investigated?”

“Something you already knew about.” He continues, “As you did me.”

I blink, then surprise myself when laughter tumbles out from between my lips. “Touché.” I raise my glass.

He seems taken aback, himself. Then his lips curve up in a smile that’s so open, so real that something flutters deep inside. It’s probably ripples of hunger, that’s all. I had very little for lunch and no breakfast. That’s the reason my stomach seems to be bottoming out.

“Also, your acting skills need leveling up.”

“Excuse me?”

“You knew you were being followed, considering you gave my investigator the slip a few times.”

I raise a shoulder. “So, get a better investigator.”

This time it’s he who barks out a laugh. “Keep up this banter, and I’ll begin to think it’s our brand of foreplay.”

“You wish,” I scoff.

His grin widens. “Of course, the fact that you evaded the detective I had on you makes me wonder what you have to hide.”

The blood drains from my features, then I tip up my chin. “Maybe I have a lover.”

“No, you don’t.”

I pull back my shoulders. “You seem awfully confident about that, Minister.”

He stares at me. “Why is that so sexy coming from you?”

Heat flushes my skin, and my mouth dries. Why is it so hot to hear him say that particular four-letter word? Why is the thought of this man talking filthy to me such a turn on? I toss my hair over my shoulder, then tip up my chin. “Hold your horses. I only called you, Minister, not Prime Minister, which you’re not—”

“—yet,” he adds smoothly, then narrows his gaze. “You can’t belong to anyone else.”

“Oh?”

He nods. “You’re mine, Zara, and I’ll do everything in my power to make you accept that.”

Excerpt:

I’m lifting my glass to take another sip of sugar when a shoulder brushes against mine. I’m two seconds from turning and giving someone a warning . . . but stop.

My body stills as a set of large, calloused hands presses against the laminate countertop next to me.

Thick, muscled wrists attach to forearms the size of my biceps. The space around me is impregnated with a very heady, very masculine vibe.

A bubble of curiosity blooms in my stomach. The intrigue grows as a rich, balmy scent licks at my senses. It’s the kind of cologne I love—the type that makes the person smelling it feel better, more confident, more attractive by proxy.

That is not a harbinger of good things, though. I know from experience.

I ignore the warning bells dinging in my head like the seasoned expert I am and twist to the side . . . and nearly fall off my stool.

Holy. Man. Candy.

His hair—thick and wild, lying to the side in an errant wave—is the color of tobacco. It’s a stark juxtaposition to the chips of sapphire sparkling in his eyes. A sharp jaw is dusted with more than a day’s worth of stubble, finishing the glorious package with a sinful edge.

“Hey,” he says, his voice smooth and inviting.

“I’m sorry,” I say, finding my voice. “Do I know you?”

He grins. “Not yet.

I climb off the bike and begin to walk with it toward the edge of the water when movement to my right causes me to turn. It’s a person, and I nearly jump.

“Kennedy?”

He stares at me with a surprised look that must match mine. “Elijah? What…” I don’t complete the sentence. Words aren’t necessary. We both know why. My eyes scan over his shoulder to his rental car from this afternoon, backed into the woods and camouflaged by the trees. On the ground in front of it is a blanket, a bottle of beer, a half-eaten sandwich, and a book. Of course, a book. “I don’t want to disturb you…” I mutter, feeling like an intruder. There are a thousand hidden roads outside of town, but only one both Elijah and I claim, and I had to decide to visit this one the same night he returned to town. What could this mean?

He hops to his feet, striding toward me. He’s changed outfits, now sporting a comfortable aqua polo shirt and khaki shorts. He’s barefoot, his sandals placed to the side of the blanket. His hazel eyes lock on me, and I feel like I’m in a tractor beam of a spaceship, unable to move. He reaches me in three long strides, a look of determination in his body but vulnerability in his voice. “Please. Stay.”

I have no defense for his words. Before I take another breath, he slips his hands into mine and doesn’t move. He stares at me like I’m a dream—as if I’m a prize. No one has looked at me like that in years. Surely this close, he must see the broken pieces in front of him.

“I thought the sunset would be the most beautiful thing I hoped to see this evening.” He squeezes my hand slightly. “Once again, you’ve proven me wrong.” He leans in, and a woodsy and citrus scent from a recent shower fill my nostrils. His words are so different, so daring from the quiet boy years ago, yet the look remains the same. He’s finally able to enunciate the words he’s always held back from me.

I close my eyes and prepare, hoping he’ll reward me in our own special way. His warm lips land on the tip of my nose. “Kiss you.” His voice catches as the words stretch to fill the silence.

I sway on my heels, his gentle pull the only thing keeping me from falling. My eyes open, no longer surprised to find his gaze locked on me, examining me. This is no longer the boy who backs down, who walks away. His gaze lowers to my lips, which part with a soft exhale. We are too close for the shadows to hide him mouthing the words oh my god.

Help us both.

I’m not sure how exactly we fell into this deadly greeting, but nothing in the world gets my heart beating like this. Every single time. I feel like I’m on a tightrope walking a thin cable while a storm whips around us. Every single time, I expect to fall. Every single time I nearly do.

I end this torture by pressing my lips to the tip of his nose. I linger longer than I ever have before, only the burn in my calves causing me to lower. The bottom of my lower lip brushes against the top of his upper one. A spark races through my body, and another audible sigh escapes my mouth. “Kiss… you back.”

I avoid his gaze, landing on his Adam’s apple as he takes a long gulp. “Like minds,” he says and juts his chin toward his blanket. I follow him, our hands still intertwined as one.

Mason’s Trail was Elijah’s go-to spot back in high school. At least twice a week, he’d hide out here away from the world. The first time he brought me here was junior year. Getting to know Elijah is a process. It takes a long while to earn his trust and for him to lower his barriers, but once he does, you have a permanent place in his fortress.

We’ve only been here together maybe a dozen times in the final two years of high school, but I always think of this place as our place, not his, not mine.

“I was out for a ride, and the bike just turned down the road,” I say as we slip down to a large red-and-black plaid blanket. My visit to the women’s center is just another secret I keep from him.

He tilts his head in my direction, a sexy half smirk on his beautiful face. “Did you come for the sunset or me?”
