BLOG TOUR – Kiss my Giraffe (Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild #7) by Erin Nicholas

Sheโ€™s the only woman he canโ€™t resist.

And now she lives right next door.

Kiss My Giraffe, a spicy grumpy sunshine romantic comedy, and the final standalone in the Boys of the Bayou Gone Wild series from New York Timesbestselling author Erin Nicholas, is available now!

Fiona knew Knox would be mad when she moved in next door.

And not because she brought a collection of wild animals with her.

And she was right.

So she intended to leave him alone. Mostly.

But heโ€™s not ignoring her. Heโ€™s actively working to send her and her โ€œridiculous menagerieโ€ (rude) right back out of town.

Still, as hard as she tries, itโ€™s impossible to stop thinking about the small town grumpโ€™s long hair and tattoos and that mouth.

Not the one thatโ€™s almost always set in a grim line and says things like, โ€œyou got a permit for that?โ€

Nope, the one that kisses her like sheโ€™s everything heโ€™s ever wanted and says very dirty things in her ear. And sweet, protective, supportive things. Sometimes. Accidentally. When she catches him off-guard.

The one that also says he only wants a long-distance fling with her. Nothing serious. And that he never dates women he sees every day. Like his neighbor.

Well, fine. If he doesnโ€™t want herโ€”and her unbelievable past and that-canโ€™t-be-real futureโ€”then she doesnโ€™t want him either. He can just kiss herโ€ฆgiraffe. (Yeah, she actually has a couple of those.)

Now she just needs to convince her heart to give him up.

Read on for a look inside Kiss My Giraffe!

โ€œRemember that thing we talked about at Christmas?”

Knox felt his gut clench. They’d talked about sleeping together. And him becoming the temporary foster dad to three baby otters.

And they’d kissed for the first time. A kiss that had been causing annoying, unwelcome, frustrating dirty dreams for three fucking months.

“About having a salacious affair where we sneak around behind our friends’ backs and sleep together whenever I’m in town?” she pressed when he didn’t answer.

“Yes. I remember.”

Too well. He was incredibly pissed about how often he’d replayed that conversation and how restless he’d been waiting for her to call or come back to Autre.

He didn’t pine for women. Ever. He did the opposite of that.

But now she was here. And Knox wasn’t sure what he was feeling. Her showing up unannounced wasn’t unusual. Fiona Grady rolled into Autre without warning more often than not in her grape-soda-purple truck that sent his heart hammering and cock hardening.

But it had been three months since he’d seen her. Since they’d talked. Since he’d had any clue what she was doing, where she was, how she was.

Suddenly, she was on his doorstep asking about their plan to bang whenever she was in town for a couple of days?

“Okay, well, there’s something I need to tell you that will make you not want to do that anymore,” she said. “So I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get naked together once before I told you and ruined everything?”

He opened his mouth to reply. Then shut it without a word. What the hell?

He glanced over his shoulder. Three minutes ago, he’d been sitting at his kitchen table doing paperwork with a cup of coffee and listening to a podcast about new creative urban development ideas.

Now the woman he was low-level obsessed with was on his porch asking if he wanted to have sex before she told him something that would make him not want to have sex with her anymore.

He ran a hand through his hair. This was why Fiona Grady was no good for him. She came into his carefully controlled and organized life and made things chaotic and messy.

“Are you sick?” he asked.

“Sick? No.”

“Dying?”

“No.”

“Is anyone dying?”

“No.”

“Are you married?” He braced himself. He knew very little about this woman, actually, and if she belonged to someone else, he’dโ€ฆ leave her alone. And hate that man. And never forgive her for stirring him up like this.

“Absolutely not.”

“Engaged?”

“No.”

Okay, that was allโ€ฆway too much of a relief. He should not be this happy to hear that.

“Did you kill someone?” he asked.

She tipped her head, her mouth curling. “Is that a definite deal-breaker?”

No, probably not. Knox narrowed his eyes.

“No, I haven’t killed anyone.”

“Are the Feds looking for you? Or will I be implicated in some kind of crime if I let you in?”

“Not that I’m aware of.”

“That’s not a no.”

“I’m just being honest.”

Fair enough. Fiona was a wild animal advocate. The type of person to show up at roadside petting zoos and ‘circuses’ to monitor how the animals were treated and hand out literature to people attending the events, raising awareness about the poor conditions and treatment of those animals. She showed up to help rescue and care for animals, wild and domestic, after natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires. She regularly lobbied local, state, and even the national government for animal protections.

The chance that she could have done something in the “gray area” for one of her causes was pretty good.

The problem with that was he knew that wouldn’t keep him from wanting her.

She was precisely the kind of woman he should be avoiding.

He studied her face for another long moment, then gave in to the inevitable. He pushed his door open.

“Yeah?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

She wasn’t dying, wasn’t married, and hadn’t killed anyone. And he wanted her more than he’d ever wanted another woman in his life. So how was he possibly going to shut the door on her? After three months of missing her? He wasn’t that strong. Or stupid.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Iโ€™ve been so looking forward to Fiona and Knoxโ€™s story and Ms Nicholas did not disappoint.

This pair have awesome chemistry and have been circling each other for a good while now so the depth of feelings that they both had for the other was understandable and awesome; until a few big truths came out and then I wasnโ€™t sure they were gonna make it!!!!

Fiona has the biggest heart, doesnโ€™t think about herself nearly enough and will always do what she thinks is the right thing, even if itโ€™s not the right thing for her!!

Knox, oh man, that big growly town manager has a squishy heart of gold, which we see throughout KMG. He had a pretty set idea of how his relationship with Fiona should go but I was rooting for him to get his head out of his backside and for him to see himself as she didโ€ฆ.. thatโ€™ll all make sense when you read their story.

I adore this series, the Landryโ€™s were as involved as they always are, there were surprises and secrets revealed and a lot of the craziness weโ€™ve come to expect with our trips to Autre. Erin had me a little all over the place with this story but it was THE BEST WAY to end the BotBGW seriesโ€ฆ.. and FINALLY we got to find out Knoxโ€™s first nameโ€ฆ that was fun!!!!!

I am now impatiently waiting to meet some of the other Landry cousins in Erinโ€™s next spin off seriesโ€ฆ.

Excerpt

You touch Indigo, and I will cut your nuts off.

That had been Buckโ€™s warning to me after heโ€™d caught us in my room that night.

But here I was, one hand on each corner of the towel, pulling it open to make the terry cloth taut.

โ€œFord.โ€ Indiโ€™s startled gaze locked onto mine. Her full lips parted in surprise. I quickly wrapped the towel back around her and tucked the edges, my fingers brushing over her damp skin just above her breasts.

Not quickly enough, though.

Iโ€™d had the misfortune of seeing all of Indiโ€™s glorious and fully naked form before I managed to get her covered again. Except, who was I kidding? There was no universe where seeing Indigo Buchanan naked could be considered a misfortune.

My throbbing dick was a testament to that fact.

Iโ€™d wanted her when she was eighteen. Lusted after her hot body. Even with a secondโ€™s glance, Iโ€™d just seen she was still perfect. Her hips had filled out. So had her tits. All woman.

โ€œSorry,โ€ I said gruffly, not meaning a fucking syllable. But I didnโ€™t let go. I didnโ€™t know what was wrong with me, but I couldnโ€™t seem to step back. Couldnโ€™t seem to relinquish control of her towel. Or hide my heated gaze. Maybe it was the strawberry scent of her shampoo.

โ€œDonโ€™tโ€”โ€ She licked her lips and glanced at my shirt, at the floor. โ€œDonโ€™t pretend you find me attractive. We both know itโ€™s not true.โ€

I stilled. Processed. What the actual fuck?

โ€œYouโ€™ve got to be fucking kidding me.โ€ My eyes popped wide. โ€œIs that what you think? Seriously?โ€

She tried to pull back, and I was an even bigger asshole because I kept my fingers curled into the top of her towel. The soft swells of her breasts were against my knuckles.

There was no way I was letting her go now. Not until she knew exactly how far from the truth that statement was.

โ€œIndigo, are you nuts?โ€

Her nostrils flared like she was about to get pissed off again, but this time I didnโ€™t encourage it. This time I saw the hurt behind her anger, and it seemed important that I correct her notion.

โ€œYouโ€™ve been a goddamn torment to me,โ€ I blurted.

She went still and finally lifted her chin, her blue eyes wide on mine.

I saw into them. All the hurt. All the sadness. All the desire.

โ€œYouโ€™reโ€ฆ That nightโ€ฆ Of course, I find youโ€”โ€ Fuck it. I was never great with words. I had to show her. Make her believe.

My mouth stamped over hers, my tongue swept between her lips. Still holding the front of her towel with one hand, I cradled her head with the other and kissed the hell out of Indigo Buchanan with a full-on, no holds barred assault. Then I changed the angle and kissed her harder. Made her feel all the frustrated, pent-up passion Iโ€™d had simmering for her for years.

Years.

โ€œNow, you tell me,โ€ I said, breaking the kiss abruptly, leaving her gasping, her cheeks flushed. My dick was achingly hard as I rolled my hips against her. โ€œDo you think I find you attractive?โ€

Indi did the worst thing imaginable. She teared up.

Then she slapped me.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Renee Rose & Vanessa Vale know how to write an off-the-charts-hot, snare your attention book and Hero was no exception. I loved this introduction to the Alpha Mountain series.

Indigo and Ford were awesome together. Their history had done a bit of a number on both of them, but especially Indie and Fordโ€™s reaction when he finally found out the extent his and Buckโ€™s actions and words had affected her showed his strength of feelings for his best friends little sister.

Ford was an all out alpha, protective, possessive and growly but caring and all in when it came to his girl. Indie was a really strong female lead. She was determined and focussed but loved with her whole heart, even when she wanted to hate Ford for how he had made her feel years ago.

There was enough angst to keep us guessing, the heat between these two could burn down the forest that Indigo worked in and the sense of family that was felt between Ford, Indigo, her parents and his team mates was fab.

Meeting the rest of the guys – as well as Fordโ€™s grandma – was fun and Iโ€™m really looking inward to their own books. A little peek at who book 2 is about has me itching for their story.

A solid 4.5 star read.

Read on for an Excerpt!

Itโ€™s the medic from earlier, the curvy one with the long-ass black hair. Iโ€™m closer, this time, and up close, sheโ€™s even more stunning. Her face is perfectly symmetrical, her eyes huge and brown, her lashes thick, lips plump and in a naturally perfect cupidโ€™s bow. And shit, the way her medic blues fit her insane curves leaves my jaw damn near on the floor.

She doesnโ€™t even register me standing at the entrance, mere feet away: thereโ€™s a godawful ruckus coming from the back of the bus. She yanks open the rear doors and heaves herself up and in.

โ€œMr. Wilson, you need to calm down.โ€ Her voice is hard, commanding. Short-tempered. โ€œIf you keep kicking up a fuss like this, Iโ€™m going to be forced to sedate you.โ€

โ€œI DONโ€™T GIVE A FUCK, YOU DUMB BITCH! LET ME GO! LET ME GO, GODDAMMIT!โ€

The medic goes flying backward out of the bus, landing on her heels and quick-stepping backward. Instinct takes over, and I lunge forward, catching her in my arms. For a split second, Iโ€™m just holding her. Sheโ€™s equal parts taut and firm, lithe and soft, delicate and warm. And for that split second, she seems tempted to justโ€ฆrelax into my arm. Let me hold her.

A spark jolts through me, like I grabbed onto a live wire. My skin tingles, my hair stands on end, and my lungs seize, breath whooshing out of me.

Iโ€™m hard as a fucking diamond, behind my pants.

The split second is gone, and sheโ€™s rocketing out of my arms like she felt the shock as clearly as I did. She shakes herself like a dog shaking water off, storming forward with her fists clenched.

โ€œThatโ€™s it, Mr. Wilson,โ€ she grits out between clenched molars. โ€œI told you.โ€

Mr. Wilson is a wiry old white guy, with a shock of hair that looks like he stuck his fingers in an electrical socket. Heโ€™s wigged the hell out, thrashing like a madman despite being restrained by the gurney straps. The other medic, the young Black man from earlier, is trying his damndest to hold the old man down, but itโ€™s like trying to wrestle a wet horse.

I grab the sexy medicโ€™s arm and hold her back. โ€œLet me.โ€

โ€œThe fuck I will,โ€ she snarls.

Iโ€™m already climbing up and into the bus, ignoring her protests. I latch onto the patientโ€™s wrists and pin his thrashing feet to the gurney with my hips. I fix him with my youโ€™re gonna listen like it or not glare, and make it clear no amount of thrashing is going to budge my iron grip.

โ€œCool the fuck off, old man.โ€ I growl the command. I let go of one of his wrists, pinioning them both with one hand, and hold out my empty hand. โ€œNeedle.โ€

I feel the syringe slap into my palm.

โ€œYou got two options, here, pal.โ€ I flick the cap off the needle and press the tip to the outside of his skinny little bicep. โ€œOne, you quit the tantrum and get yourself treated like a goddamn adult. Option two, I jab this shit into you, and I canโ€™t guarantee how gentle Iโ€™ll be. You feel me?โ€

He stills, but his eyes snap with defiance. โ€œGet off me.โ€

โ€œWrong answer.โ€ I press the needle harder. โ€œLast chance.โ€

โ€œFine, goddamnit, fine. That shit constipates me.โ€

I snicker. โ€œThen quit acting like a child.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need no ambulance. Iโ€™m fuckinโ€™ fine.โ€

The Black medic coughs a laugh. โ€œYou had a stroke two weeks ago and you just overdosed on Vicodin. Youโ€™re not fine.โ€

I blink. โ€œHow is he alive? Much less upright and pitching a tantrum?โ€

The medic shrugs. โ€œHell if I know. Bastard isnโ€™t human.โ€

โ€œI heard that you goddamnโ€”โ€

I silence him with a glare. โ€œYou better not fucking finish saying what I think youโ€™re about to say.โ€

He holds up his hands. โ€œI wasnโ€™t gonna say that. I ainโ€™t no racist.โ€

โ€œGet out of my bus,โ€ a female voice says from behind me.

I climb backward and out, turn to face a very pissed-off but still drop-dead sexy medic. โ€œWhatโ€™s his story?โ€

She just glares at me. โ€œI didnโ€™t ask for your help.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™d be the one getting stitches if I hadnโ€™t caught you.โ€

She just glares. โ€œMy bus, my patient.โ€

I hold up my hands. โ€œFine, sorry for nothing, then. Damn.โ€

She reaches for the syringe still in my hand. โ€œGive me that.โ€ She snatches it from me as I extend it to her. โ€œYou canโ€™t threaten patients. Who the fuck trained you?โ€

โ€œIf the patient is acting a fool and risking the safety of the medics trying to help him, I sure as fuck can. I didnโ€™t threaten him, anyway. Not with anything you werenโ€™t about to do.โ€

She goes nose to nose with meโ€”well, nose to collarbone, since sheโ€™s several inches shorter than me; her glare is impressively intimidating, but itโ€™s somewhat undercut by the fact that as she sidles up and stands nose to nose with me, holding her ground and glaring fit to murder, her breasts press against my chest, and thatโ€™s all I can fucking think about.

โ€œMy bus,โ€ she repeats, slowly, furiously, โ€œmy patient. Go back to your fire and your hoses and leave me the hell alone.โ€

I hold her gaze and try like hell to keep my eyes from wandering down to her generous, button-straining chest.

I fail.

Her hiss of disgust isโ€ฆwell, if it could be used as a weapon, Iโ€™d be dead.

She presses all five fingers of both hands into my chest and pushes me away, eyes stabbing murderous fury into mine. โ€œGoโ€ฆaway.โ€

I back up slowly, holding her eyes. โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€ I wink at her, shooting her the grin which, according to the guys at the station, is guaranteed to melt panties at fifty paces.

She growls like a cornered raccoon; her panties are decidedly not melted.

I hold up my hands palms out. โ€œDamn, girl. Donโ€™t shoot. I was just trying to help. Itโ€™s instinct.โ€

โ€œWell take your instincts and fuck off.โ€ She pivots away from me, heading toward her bus, where the Black medic is currently wrestling the gurney down, the patient still muttering imprecations under his breath.

Fuck, fuck, and double-fuckโ€”the girl is all curves. If her tits were about to pop the buttons off her shirt, her ass is popping the seams of her uniform slacks. Not tall, maybe five-six, five-seven at most, sheโ€™s one hundred percent hot-as-fuck, mind-altering, cock-hardening, dead-sexy curves.

I donโ€™t even try to not stare at her ass as she helps pull the gurney off the bus. I canโ€™t not stareโ€”itโ€™s a biological imperative.

She stops and shoots a glare at me over her shoulder. โ€œQuit staring at my ass.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m trying, I swear. Not my fault youโ€™ve got an ass that donโ€™t quit.โ€

Thereโ€™s a muffled cough from her partner, and his eyes cut to mine, expressing amusement he dares not otherwise let her see. โ€œWeโ€™d better get Mr. Wilson into treatment before the sheer stubbornness thatโ€™s keeping him alive wears off.โ€

I finally manage to rip myself away from the sexy medic and her hypnotic ass. Head for my truck, climb behind the wheel, start the motorโ€ฆand go nowhere.

Sheโ€™s pushing from the back end while her partner pulls from the frontโ€”I just canโ€™t resist one last long, lingering look as she vanishes inside.

โ€œThat is one hell of a woman,โ€ I say out loud.

She hates me, but goddamn is she gorgeous. And honestly, the fiery fury of her is intoxicating. I donโ€™t know her name, but I know Iโ€™ll be dreaming about her tonight.

BLP REVIEW – Tracy

Unavoidable Truth was a good read. Personally, the first book in the series is still my favourite, but I thoroughly enjoyed Leo & Dariusโ€™s book.

I have to admit, when we initially met him, I wasnโ€™t a fan of Dโ€ฆ his attitude rubbed me the wrong way.. but Jess changed my mind in him and by around the two third mark I was definitely taken with him. Under that surly, sometimes mean exterior was a great heart.

I really liked Leo. As an Alpha he needed someone strong but he also someone he could just be himself with, and thatโ€™s what he got from Darius.

Seeing these two develop their relationship was good after having caught glimpses of what was going on in the previous instalment in the series when they guys were kinda on the sidelines.
Watching previous events from both Leo and Dariusโ€™s POVs gave another layer to things that happened with Rafe & Zoey as well as Michael & Luna.

Iโ€™m looking forward to the sisters books, though I think Maya is likely gonna give her potential mate a run for his money!!!!

This series was my first read by Jess Bryant but Iโ€™m definitely gonna be catching up on her other works.

BLOG TOUR – Right Number, Wrong Girl by Emma Hart

Will Ms. Wrong find Mr. Right?

Right Number Wrong Girl, an all-new, sexy, opposites attract, romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is out now!

Excerpt

He turned to me. โ€œI donโ€™t see a car outside. Did you drive here?โ€

I paused. โ€œNo. I cycled.โ€

โ€œYou cycled?โ€

Evelyn snorted, getting up. โ€œPeople do use things other than cars to get around, you know. Back in my day, cars were for the rich.โ€

Hugo slid her a look. โ€œYou were the rich. You are the rich.โ€

โ€œGood point. Never mind, then.โ€ She winked at me, adding a cheeky grin to it, and walked towards the door. โ€œI trust youโ€™ll be taking Camilla back to her cottage.โ€

โ€œOh, itโ€™s fine,โ€ I said, right as Hugo said, โ€œI wonโ€™t be passing there.โ€

Evelyn stopped dead in front of him and craned her neck to look up at him. โ€œIt wasnโ€™t a request, Hugo.โ€

He rolled his shoulders. โ€œUnderstood.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I thought.โ€ She tapped his leg with her stick, and he stepped aside to let her pass.

It was abundantly clear who ran the roost around here.

Hugo sighed the second sheโ€™d disappeared. โ€œAre you ready?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to take me,โ€ I said, picking up the rucksack and slinging it over my shoulders. โ€œItโ€™s really not far by bike.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to take you, but the idea of Grandma finding out I didnโ€™t is something I like a whole lot less, so letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œI have Noraโ€™s bike with me. I canโ€™t just leave it here.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll throw it in the back. Come on.โ€ He motioned for me to follow him again, and I begrudgingly did so.

I could not think of anything I wanted less than to spend time in an enclosed space with Hugo. Or any space, really. Weโ€™d not exactly hit it off at the pub, and that was clearly a theme we were going for given that weโ€™d sniped at one another every time weโ€™d spoken.

So sitting in a car?

No, thank you.

โ€œIโ€™ll ride the bike back,โ€ I said when he opened the front door.

โ€œJust let me take you. Iโ€™m trying to be nice,โ€ he huffed.

โ€œYouโ€™re only being nice because she told you to be. Youโ€™re not doing it out of the goodness of your heart. Thereโ€™s a difference.โ€ I stepped outside.

He followed me, pulling the door closed behind him. โ€œEither way, think of it as an olive branch.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a fan of olives.โ€

โ€œOf course youโ€™re not.โ€

I gave him a withering look, then sighed. โ€œHow are you going to get the bike back? Do you have a bike rack on your car?โ€

โ€œI have a pick-up truck.โ€

I blinked at him. โ€œWhat is this? Little Texas?โ€

Hugo scratched his cheek. โ€œLook at where I live.โ€

Pointedly, I turned around and stared at the huge manor house. โ€œDownton Abbey?โ€

He licked his lips and looked up.

I swear.

If he did that counting thing he did with his Grandmaโ€ฆ

โ€œDonโ€™t start counting,โ€ I warned him.

His gaze snapped down. โ€œYou caught that?โ€

โ€œYou have the discretion of a pick-up truck parked outside Downton Abbey.โ€

โ€œMaybe I should count to ten instead of three with you,โ€ he muttered, walking over to where Iโ€™d left Noraโ€™s bike. โ€œIt might make me be able to be nice to you for real.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a child.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re acting like one.โ€

โ€œSo are you.โ€

โ€œFair point,โ€ he agreed, wheeling the bike over. โ€œCome on. Iโ€™ll toss this in the back and take you there.โ€

All right. Fine. I clearly wasnโ€™t winning this argument, and even if he was only doing it because Evelyn had made him, Iโ€™d accept the olive branch.

At the end of the day, he knew I wasnโ€™t Camilla.

I was loathe to admit it, but I needed his help.

It meant Iโ€™d have to try to get along with him.

โ€œThank you,โ€ I said, watching as he carefully put the bike in the bed of a muddy black pick-up truck. โ€œSo why do you have this miniature lorry?โ€

He chuckled. โ€œExmoor.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to have to elaborate.โ€

He opened the passenger side car door for me. โ€œIโ€™ll explain on the way.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€ I put both my bags in the footwell looked at the truck.

I was five-foot-three.

These wheels were almost bigger than I was.

How on Earth was I supposed to get in there? I supposed I was going to have to haul myself up and hope for the best.

I braced my hands on the seat and the door, took a deep breath, and yanked myself up. My hand gave way on the soft fabric of the seat, and my foot slipped on the metal step. My life flashed behind my eyes, and I was about to scream when Hugo grabbed me from behind.

He wrapped one arm around my waist and held me against his body. My heart pounded uncontrollably, and I didnโ€™t know if it was from the fear of my near fall or because I was nestled tightly against him.

He had a very firm body.

It wasnโ€™t the worst thing Iโ€™d ever been pressed up again, for what itโ€™s worth.

โ€œNeed a leg up?โ€ His lips were far too close to my ear, and his words were said on an exhale that skittered warmly against my cheek.

Yep.

Yeah.

Yes.

The heart pounding was definitely from his closeness.

This was an unwelcome development.

Taking a work call for my best friend in my undies? Check.

Filling in for her after an emergency and getting mistaken for her? Check.

Royally messing it all up until the hot duke-in-waiting I hate but canโ€™t keep my hands off steps in to save me? Uh, checkโ€ฆ

Yes, yes, that all sounds wonderful, doesnโ€™t it? Until you consider I now have to plan and execute an 80th birthday party for the Dowager Duchess of Devon, and I canโ€™t organize my hairbrushes. The current duchess is the ultimate type A personality, determined to micromanage the entire thing.

Iโ€™m a typeโ€ฆ XYZ . . . LMNOP . . .  Maybe not even that.

When all my attempts go to hell in half a handbasketโ€”I canโ€™t even mess up properlyโ€”the only hope I have to pull this thing off is duke-in-waiting Hugo Edwards.

The dreamy, handsome, makes-my-heart-pitter-patter, arrogant tosspot Hugo Edwards.

He and his brother are the only people who know who I really am. The success of their grandmotherโ€™s party relies on us getting along long enough to make it happenโ€”and me and Hugo keeping our hands off one another behind closed doors.

None of which is easy to achieve.

When my best friend shows up to take over from me, the fact that Iโ€™ve fallen for Hugo is the least of my worriesโ€ฆ

Exclusive Excerpt:

Deirdra de Messiรฉres lay in her childhood bedroom on Silver Island thinking about her upended life. Sheโ€™d worked her ass off for the last several years as a corporate attorney for a tech firm in Boston, and after her promotion to assistant general counsel last year, sheโ€™d thought she was on the fast track to becoming general counsel when the slot opened upโ€”until the GC had a heart attack and her slave-driver boss, Malcolm, had hired a referral from outside the company through his good-old-boy network.

The bastard.

Heโ€™d sprung that little nugget on her three days ago, after which Deirdra had announced her two-month hiatus, effective immediately. Everyone had been shocked, including Deirdra. Sheโ€™d never taken time off and had made herself available in the evenings and on weekends since sheโ€™d first started with the company. Sheโ€™d had to. It was a dog-eat-dog industry, and with six other attorneys on boardโ€”four of whom were menโ€”sheโ€™d wanted to stand out. Yes, she was well aware that she was putting the company sheโ€™d given her all to in a pickle, especially since the new general counsel couldnโ€™t start for another two months. But that was the point. Let them suffer without her impeccable mind handling everything under the sun. She was confident in her game plan and certain Malcolm would quickly see the error of his ways.

Well, pretty confident, anyway. Ninety percent sure.

Okay, seventy-five percent.

The truth was, sheโ€™d thought he wouldnโ€™t let her walk out the door after her announcement. But her stern sixty-year-old boss had simply wished her a relaxing time and said she needed it. Sheโ€™d already received dozens of calls and emails from colleagues who were shocked that sheโ€™d taken so much time off, but she struggled with disappointment over the ones that hadnโ€™t come from her boss.

She still couldnโ€™t believe Malcolm had said she freaking needed the break. As if sheโ€™d ever produced subpar work? That was a laugh. Heโ€™d had nothing but accolades for her jobs well done, and last yearโ€™s promotion had been proof of that.

Her frustration simmered to the boiling point. Ugh. She needed to stop overthinking the situation. Fat chance of that happening for a self-professed control freak. Deirdra not overthinking would be as weird as her younger sister, Abby, not seeing the bright side of things or their older half sister, Cait, trusting everyone at face value. Deirdra had a better chance of trying to transform into a bird and fly away.

If only . . .

She and her sisters were quite the trio, and theyโ€™d had a whirlwind few months. She and Abby had only discovered Cait existed in the spring, when theyโ€™d come back to the island to go over their motherโ€™s will with one of their motherโ€™s best friends, Shelley Steele. While Abby had embraced and trusted Cait unconditionally from the moment sheโ€™d met her, Deirdra had been cautious, given that their family house, restaurant, and meager inheritances were on the line. It had taken Cait some time to open up and trust them as well. But theyโ€™d gotten through those trials and tribulations and had become close. Cait was a wonderful addition to their family, and like Abby, sheโ€™d found solace and love on Silver Island.

Deirdra would not be following suit.

Beyond seeing her sisters happy, Deirdra had no interest in their family restaurant, the Bistro, or in the island on which sheโ€™d spent too many years trying to hold together the pieces of her alcoholic motherโ€™s disheveled life, helping to run the Bistro and keep a roof over their heads. Deirdra had fled immediately after high school to attend Boyer University in Upstate New York with her bestie, Sutton Steele, and had finally started living her own life. But self-preservation had consequences, and Abby had been stuck caring for their mother in Deirdraโ€™s absence. That sucked, but what choice had Deirdra had at the time? Stay on the rinky-dink island running a restaurant she resented and putting her drunk mother to bed while her dreams went to pot? Besides, Abby had encouraged her to go, and Deirdra had clung to that support like a lifeboat in her sea of guilt as sheโ€™d set out to prove herself to Abby and maybe even to stick it to her mother and show that she couldnโ€™t hold her back.

Deirdra stared at the ceiling, discomfort simmering inside her. Sheโ€™d thought her resentment toward the island and all that it represented might ease now that her mother was gone, but painful reminders lingered like ghosts in the wind, and the house and her bedroom were filled with them. Abby and Aiden had done a great job of sprucing it up. It was absolutely gorgeous. To anyone else it would seem warm and inviting, but there wasnโ€™t enough paint on the planet to obliterate Deirdraโ€™s painful memories. How many nights had she snuck out the window just to sit on the hill and look out at the water to keep from drowning in her motherโ€™s wake?

Maybe she shouldnโ€™t have come back, but she couldnโ€™t do that to Cait. The start of her impromptu hiatus had lined up with the day Cait and all their friends were fixing up her new tattoo shop. Deirdra wasnโ€™t big on manual labor, but she loved her sisters, and sheโ€™d needed to get out of Boston. She was glad sheโ€™d come, even if being on the island was uncomfortable. Sheโ€™d gotten to witness Caitโ€™s boyfriend, Deirdraโ€™s childhood friend Brant Remington, get down on one knee in front of all their friends and propose. Deirdra couldnโ€™t be happier for them, but come hell or high water, she was getting off this island tomorrow and going on a well-deserved vacation, the destination of which was yet to be determined.

The sound of the front door jarred her from her thoughts, and Abbyโ€™s giggles floated upstairs. She and her fiancรฉ, Aiden Aldridge, couldnโ€™t keep their hands off each other. Deirdra glanced at her phone. It was almost one oโ€™clock in the morning. In the spring, Abby had moved back home from New York, where sheโ€™d worked sixty-plus hours a week as a chef. Sheโ€™d met and fallen head over heels for Aiden in a whirlwind love affair. Together theyโ€™d revived the Bistro, and they were getting married in November.

Deirdra tried to focus on the distant sounds of Silver Harbor sneaking in through the open window instead of the cacophony of laughter, low conversations, and prolonged silences, followed by loud lustful sounds coming from downstairs. If only she were back in Boston. She preferred her noisy neighborโ€™s stereo blasting classic rock and oldies at all hours over this. At least that she could dance to.

Needless to say, she was a little jealous of her sistersโ€™ love lives. Not that sheโ€™d had time for a man, or anything else besides work, these last few years. More noises floated upstairs. She closed her eyes, willing them not to have sex in the living room or, worse, in the kitchen. She had to eat at that table. Oh God, thatโ€™s probably what Aiden is doing. She squeezed her eyes shut. Deletedeletedelete!

What was she thinking, staying in her old bedroom? She should have stayed in the apartment over the garage. Why hadnโ€™t she thought of that from the get-go?

A loud thud rattled the walls, followed by more laughter.

Deirdra flew out of bed. She was not going to listen to a play-by-play of Abby and Aiden having sex. She put on her silk kimono and headed downstairs, praying she wouldnโ€™t catch them in a compromising position. She stopped on the bottom step, eyeing the trail of clothing that led past the steps and down the hall to their bedroom. Thank God. Hurrying into the kitchen, she snagged the key to the apartment off the hook by the side door and quietly slipped outside. She crossed her arms against the brisk September air as she climbed the steps to the apartment above the garage.

A streak of moonlight lit a path down the hallway to the bedroom. She took off her kimono and slipped under the warm covers, closing her eyes as she sank into the mattress. Something moved beside her, and her eyes flew open just as that something licked her face. She screamed and jumped out of the bed, flailing for the light switch. A bark rang out, and a cold nose hit her crotch. She swatted at it as she flicked on the lights, illuminating an amused Josiah โ€œJaggerโ€ Jones pushing languidly from the bed as his dalmatian, Dolly, nosed Deirdraโ€™s privates. The twentysomething hippie worked at the Bistro as a part-time musician and part-time chef.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€ She twisted away from Dolly, her eyes catching on Jaggerโ€™s naked body. Holy mother of hotness. Broad shoulders and a few wordy tattoos on his ribs vied for her attention, but her eyes locked on the dusting of dark chest hair trailing down lickable abs, and her thoughts skidded to a halt at the impressive cock dangling between his legs. She couldnโ€™t look away. Her loneliest parts clenched with desire, while her boggled mind tried to make sense of the perfect manscaping, which didnโ€™t fit the image she held of the hemp-clothing- and sandal-wearing, too-damn-laid-back guy for whom she had no patience. Not that sheโ€™d ever imagined him naked. Well, not too often anyway. He may not be her typeโ€”give her a man in a suit any dayโ€”but she couldnโ€™t deny that Jagger was hot, and he had a great voice, the kind that fantasies were made of. His hair wasnโ€™t bad, either: dark, thick, and wavy. The kind of hair sheโ€™d love to hold on to while his face was between her legs.

Dolly licked her, snapping her back to the moment.

Holy crap. She was losing it. She was thirty years old, and he couldnโ€™t be more than twenty-four or -five. She needed to get off the island and scratch that particular itch with a man who was more her speed . . . age . . . Holy cow, his body . . .

Dolly licked her again, jerking her mind back into submission.

โ€œDolly!โ€ She turned away, glowering at Jagger, who was watching her with a big-ass grin.

โ€œLike what you see?โ€ he said far too casually. He lazily raked a hand through his hair, his leather and beaded bracelets slipping down his wrist.
