Archangel’s Shadows (Guild Hunter #7) by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Shadows (Guild Hunter, #7)

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s sensual and painfully beautiful Guild Hunter world in her new novel of sacrifice, loyalty, and the choices of love that can shatter the heart.

In the wake of a brutal war, the archangel Raphael and his hunter consort, Elena, are dealing with the treacherously shifting tides of archangelic politics and the people of a battered but not broken city. The last thing their city needs is more death, especially a death that bears the eerie signature of an insane enemy archangel who cannot— should not—be walking the streets.

This hunt must be undertaken with stealth and without alerting their people. It must be handled by those who can become shadows themselves…

Ash is a gifted tracker and a woman cursed with the ability to sense the secrets of anyone she touches. But there’s one man she knows all too well without a single instant of skin contact: Janvier, the dangerously sexy Cajun vampire who has fascinated and infuriated her for years. Now, as they track down a merciless killer, their cat-and-mouse game of flirtation and provocation has turned into a profound one of the heart. And this time, it is Ash’s secret, dark and terrible, that threatens to destroy them both.

BLP REVIEW ~ Rebecca

There are 4 authors in the paranormal genre who I recommend repeatedly and who have given me countless hours of pleasure reading whilst immersed in the worlds and characters they create. Nalini Singh is one of those 4, she creates magic with words and immerses you into a vivid, colourful world that is totally 3D in your mind because of the richness, depth, emotion and magic in each and every page. Archangels, angels, vampires and humans, mortal and immortal are seamlessly interwoven, you cannot help but become invested in these characters. Whilst Elena and Raphael are the focal point the secondary characters take centre stage at different points through this series and such an example is this one, Archangel’s Shadows.

If you haven’t read the other books I would strongly suggest that you do so in order not to miss any of the details and subtleties of the series.

Ashwini and Janvier have been circling each other, teasing and flirting for quite some time, we’ve seen them sparring both verbally and physically!

“You made me traipse through the bayou for weeks,” she muttered now. “Then, right when I had you, you made nice with the angel you’d pissed off.” It wasn’t the first time he’d done that either. “You knew how mad that made me—why did you keep doing it?”

Lifting their clasped hands, he pressed a kiss to her knuckles. “I was courting you.”

Ash has her reasons for refusing to get closer to him but our Cajun hottie is persistent, patient and loyal. Yes we all knew he was gonna get her in the end but I had no clue that Ms Singh would do it how she has, unexpected, beautiful, and surprising.

“I’ll show you things that’ll make you laugh in delight, scream in passion, cry for the sheer joy of it.”

Although this is Ash and Janvier’s story we had plenty of interaction with the rest of the cast. Elena and Raphael were just divine as always – their relationship just gets stronger and stronger with a balance that is growing and growing. My darling Bluebell I worry about, I know she’s going to break my heart with his story whenever it gets told. There are some lovely exchanges with most of the Seven and Naasir just shines – out of nowhere he comes centre stage and I freaking loved him. Funny, irreverent (often without even realising it!) dangerous and yet so loveable I cannot wait for his book. If you had asked me before reading this one nothing would have swayed my from my Bluebell but I am now an unfaithful whore because Naasir was just sublime and delicious and I NEED more.

I told Caliane that trying to civilize me is like trying to civilize a jungle cat,” Naasir said with a shrug. “We pretend to like people until we get hungry and want fresh meat.” A glance around, a glint in his eye. “I honestly do like you all. I haven’t thought about eating you for at least two centuries.”

He’d never forget what Naasir had said to him when Dmitri yelled that he didn’t intend to bury another child and that Naasir needed to have a care for his life.

“Am I a person, Dmitri? Will you be sad if I die?”

Hardened and cruel though he’d become, the innocent question had shaken him. “Yes,” he’d said, as honest in his answer as Naasir had been in his question. “You are a person. You are Naasir. I’ll lose a piece of me if you die and it’s a piece I’ll never get back.”

Naasir had stared at him for a long time before coming over to hug him. “Okay, Dmitri. I’m sorry. I didn’t know I was a person before.”

“Naasir stretched lazily before settling back into his previous position. “I’m old enough now, and I want someone to play with like you play with Janvier and Raphael does with Elena. Even Dmitri plays with Honor.” This seemed to fascinate him. “The rules are secret in each game. I want to have secret rules with a woman who . . .” A long pause. “A woman who knows me, understands what I am, and who wants to have secret rules with me.

For me this is a lovely instalment in the series that answers questions and creates so many more! It has action, suspense, romance, builds even more depth into this fabulous world and has heart. Huge Heart. Settling down with this book was like catching up with friends and family at a celebration of life and love, I enjoyed every minute, didn’t want it to end and wanted to go home with my Bluebell and Naasir.

Nalini Singh did it again, delivered, yet left us wanting more.

A Magician with Heart.

AUTHOR BIO

I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and all of my stories always held a thread of romance (even when I was writing about a prince who could shoot lasers out of his eyes). I love creating unique characters, love giving them happy endings and I even love the voices in my head. There’s no other job I would rather be doing. In September 2002, when I got the call that Silhouette Desire wanted to buy my first book, Desert Warrior, it was a dream come true. I hope to continue living the dream until I keel over of old age on my keyboard.

I was born in Fiji and raised in New Zealand. I also spent three years living and working in Japan, during which time I took the chance to travel around Asia. I’m back in New Zealand now, but I’m always plotting new trips. If you’d like to see some of my travel snapshots, have a look at the Travel Diary page (updated every month).

So far, I’ve worked as a lawyer, a librarian, a candy factory general hand, a bank temp and an English teacher and not necessarily in that order. Some might call that inconsistency but I call it grist for the writer’s mill.
