It was unseasonably warm for late September, with the windows down in my car I enjoyed the dry breeze as I pulled up to the traffic lights. My eyes were drawn to the car next to me. She was enjoying the warm spell too. Her windows were down and she was blaring some unknown music from her stereo. The side of my mouth pulled into a grin as I watched. She didn’t notice me watching at first. She sang freely, her voice strong and beautiful. The song was feminine and the guitars were light. She had long very dark hair pulled into a high ponytail. I was transfixed.

Suddenly, she started and bit her bottom lip. Her once tall posture and confidence waned. Slowly, she glanced over to look at me, chagrin written all over her face. I couldn’t tell, was she blushing? She was embarrassed to have been caught that’s for sure, her solo concert abruptly ended. I gave her a huge smile. She just bit her lip again and looked forward, sinking into her seat. I watched as she fidgeted uncomfortably, waiting for the light to change. She was so pretty. No, not pretty, but plainly beautiful. I suddenly had a crazy urge to call out to her, ask her name when she sped off. The car behind me honked their car horn and I was sharply pushed from my reverie.

I pulled into my apartment complex. I felt dejected. I wanted to see that girl again.

I focused on that memory while I looked down at her in that hospital bed. I tried to stop the bleeding, she’d lost so much blood. She was here now, eyes closed, her silky hair ran through my fingers. This small touch caused shivers to run up my spine. I placed a small kiss on her cool cheek. Resting my forehead against hers, her breathing light and steady, blew against my lips. We’d get through this. We had to, there was no other choice…

Jennifer’s debut full length novel Twice Lost – Book 1 in the Harbinger Series was released in September 2014 under the Forever Red Publishing label. She is currently working on four Novella length books within the Harbinger Series to be released in-between her full length novels just to keep the steaminess going.
She currently lives in Western Massachusetts and has a love for adventure that makes her who she truly is. As an avid mountain climber & hiker it is not unusual for her to be hanging off of a 5.9 in the Adirondacks or the Shawangunk Mountain ranges. During the off season of climbing, also known as winter, she attends the New England Center for Circus Arts where she studied static trapeze (think Cirque rather than Circus).

Sawyer was the first person to not define me by my parents’ deaths. My past felt so far away when I was with him. I could let it go. Let them go. My parents’ faces haunted me every night since that day twelve years ago. I was ready to set the memory free. I felt loved and I wanted him to feel the same. His childhood was dark and I wanted to shed light onto him, fill his heart with the white light of love, evicting the blackness that I saw flash across his eyes when he thought deeply to himself. I wanted him to get better with me. This was crazy. This man, this idea, this night. I loved him and whatever demons he had, my heart was ready to move on to something better, and that was Sawyer.

His breathing became even and I chanced a look at his face. His dark eyelashes fanned down. He looked like an arc angel. I situated myself on my side so that my body rested against his. I placed my head on his shoulder and kissed his cheek.

“I love you, too,” I whispered touching the skin of his cheek with my lips. “I do.”

His breathing stopped and I recognized when I looked up that he would be awake. I lifted up on my forearm and we watched each other in a deep silence.

That may sound cruel, but it’s the truth. She used before she was preggers used during her pregnancy and as soon as she shit me out she was back on the pipe three days later. That’s what my Grammy told me anyway.

My grammy, Evalyn Louise Grace was loved by everyone in town. She is the mother of the sperm donor. His name was Joel Robert Grace A.K.A fucktard. She tried several times to save him but…

like my birther he wasn’t worth saving. Grammy took in my Uncle Joe when it was “accidently” revealed that he was gay and the Birthers family shunned and shamed him. She loved him, protected him and made sure he knew what a real family does for one another.

Most days are easy peasy and I get along just fine, but… there are the days that I think back on the birther and sperm donor and wonder why, why were the drugs more important? Why was I just a bother? I just wanted a normal family, a loving Mom and Dad. I wanted to go shopping with a Mom and fishing with a Dad, but, my fate was not that. When my life turned tragic, it was in those minutes, those hours that I knew… I knew MY life would change… and I made a promise to my future children that I would never make them feel hopeless, lost or broken. They would however feel loved, protected and never afraid.

Leia is from Iowa where she resides with her Husband and beautiful daughter. She has a spoiled yellow lab, drama queen papillion and an old grouchy cat. She loves to swim and ride bikes, both of the motor and pedal version. She is an avid fisher-woman and gardener.
