She shouldn’t be doing this. She absolutely shouldn’t be doing this.
Every argument Poppy had given herself in the last three days—and especially the last thirty minutes, since Wyatt quit the band—went round and round in her head as she slid her hands around to cup Wyatt’s ass so that she could take him deeper.
She ignored them all—every argument, every worry, every consequence she knew would come from this—and concentrated instead on giving him as much pleasure as he’d given her. On making him feel as good as he made her feel.
Doing this was stupid; she knew it with every fiber of her being. Bad for her job, bad for her future, and—she was beginning to be more than a little afraid—bad for her heart. But how could she not give him this after seeing the vulnerability in his eyes?
How could she not take him inside of herself when that one glimpse had let her see just how lost he felt? How desperately he wanted, needed, to connect with someone?
She would be that someone.
Not because of her job, not because of her ambitions or the label or any of the reasons why she’d come here. But because of Wyatt. For a moment, just a moment, she thought about how he’d gotten this lean, this toned, this hard. Thought of the drugs and the horrors of withdrawal and the hours he must have spent exercising just to keep from going out of his mind. It didn’t turn her off, didn’t make her feel sorry for him, though it did make her feel for him. As did the still fading track marks she could see ghosting along the veins that ran on the outside of his hips.
She wanted to touch them, to lick her way along them in an effort to soothe away all the hurt and ugliness they represented. But something deep inside warned her it would ruin everything if she did, and so she settled on letting him slip out of her mouth so she could press hot, open-mouthed kisses on first one hip and then the other. And if her heart broke just a little at all the pain he had suffered, well then, nobody had to know that but her.
Wyatt groaned, his hands fisting in her hair as she pushed his T-shirt up and out of the way so that she could see, touch, taste more of him.
She skimmed her way across his stomach, kissing every inch of exposed skin she could get her lips on. But then the shirt fell down, covering him up again, and she made a sound of frustration deep in her throat. She hadn’t been able to see him in that alley the other night. She wasn’t about to let that happen here.
He must have recognized the source of her frustration—or maybe he just wanted the shirt gone as much as she did. Either way, it took only a second for Wyatt to rip the offending garment over his head and drop it on the ground next to her torn panties. As he did, the muscles of his chest and stomach flexed and bunched, and it was all she could do to keep her tongue in her mouth.
Because, dear God, the man was sporting the first ten pack she had ever seen up close and personal. Hell, it was the only ten pack she’d ever seen, period. She knew drummers were ripped, knew they used their core more than pretty much any other musicians out there, but still. Wyatt had been toned when he’d gone to rehab. Now…now he looked like a god.

Suddenly, my body goes rigid. I can’t move at all, but I can feel a surge through my entire system. I can see it, taste it, smell it. My heart forces blood through my veins, warming my insides. As the blood flows, the muscles in my legs, arms, and chest flex.
“Sten? Are you all right?”
I try to focus on her face, but my vision is blurred.
“Hold on, Sten. You just need to ride it out.”
“What…” I can’t utter another word. My throat seizes up, and for a second, I am unable to take a breath.
Riley’s palm touches my face as she presses a sensor to my temple. My arm jerks, and I grasp her hand. I press it to my chest.
“Relax. Focus on your breath.”
“I can’t!”
She takes my free hand in hers and holds it to her body, right over her heart.
“Focus on me, then,” she says. “Feel my heartbeat.”
My fingers twitch. I can feel the steady beat in each fingertip. Closing my eyes, I count the beats. One hundred. Two hundred. Three hundred.
Minutes pass. I keep counting. Eventually, my body begins to adjust and my muscles relax. I become aware of not just her heartbeat, but of how close my hand is to her breast. My dick strains in my shorts.
I reach out with my legs, wrapping them around her waist and bringing her body toward my crotch. Releasing her hand, I reach up and grab the back of her head and use the other hand to push the collar of the lab coat out of the way. The blue of her blouse contrasts with her skin. It’s beautiful, enticing.
With one finger, I trace the edge of her collar, brushing over her skin. I can feel her heart beat under my fingertip, and I want to taste the spot where I’ve touched her. I look back to her eyes. She’s staring at my lips.
I bring us together, pressing my mouth to hers gently at first but then with more vigor. I can taste mint on her breath as my tongue slides over hers. I thread my fingers through her hair and tighten my thighs around her waist, holding her close to me. I trail my finger farther down her collar and spread my hand to cup her breast.
She pulls back, breaking the kiss.
“Sten, you’ll have to stop that now.”
“I don’t want to.”
“I know.” She touches the side of my face, running her hand over my rough cheek.
“I want you. I need you.” I don’t understand why I’m explaining myself. It’s clear to me from her scent that she wants this too, but she keeps pushing me away. She denies me as she denies herself.
Why?

“Relax,” she said with a smile. “I won’t hurt you.”

I trusted her. It was an alien feeling to me, and one I hadn’t felt since I met Freddy.

“Ready?”

I nodded, laid my head back and squeezed my eyes shut.

“You know,” Faith said as the first prick touched my skin and I flinched, my body tensing. “There are many meanings behind the significance of the swallow.”

I hummed, signalling for her to go further, lost in the sensation of her hand on my stomach and the needle pricking my skin. She was right – you can’t count the number of times the needle pierces. It didn’t hurt; I’d felt enough pain to know what it really felt like, but this wasn’t pain. It was uncomfortable pleasure. It was pleasurable discomfort.

“Traditionally it’s chosen by sailors. It symbolises the miles of ocean they’ve travelled.” Her voice was soft and comforting, allowing me to drift away from constant defence, like a sailor who had stopped rowing to feel the ebb and flow of the sea beneath him. “And some say it means ‘these fists fly’. Fighting talk, from boxers back in the day.” I slipped into the lull created by Faith and her soft touch, the way she made branding my skin forever feel as natural as breathing. “They’re usually inked in a pair on the chest, and the sailors believed that if they were lost at sea, the swallows would carry their souls to find peace.”

That was exactly how I felt on the leather bed, exposed and open without saying a word. I felt like I’d taken a slice of peace to calm my lost soul.

“Can I ask you a question?” she says as she leans back in the seat.

I take her free hand and entwine it with mine. Placing both of our hands in my lap, I nod.

“You can ask me anything.”

She takes a deep breath as if she is suddenly nervous. “How do you do it? How do you love me knowing everything you do?”

She still doesn’t get it.

I stare at her for a moment before taking her glass out of her hand. I place both glasses in the little slots that were made for them and turn to her. “Come here,” I whisper. She slides toward me and I pull her onto my lap so she is straddling me. I wrap my arms around her waist and breathe her in for a moment. “What makes you love your parents, Ned?” I ask calmly. She looks puzzled and shakes her head.

“I don’t know,” she says shrugging her shoulders. “It comes naturally, I don’t have a reason … I just love them, I always have I guess.”

“That’s exactly the way I feel about you. I can’t explain the reason that I love you. It’s like asking me why I breathe … I do it to survive.”

She’s silent. Then she nods her head.

“I get it,” she whispers. “I just needed to know if you felt it too or whether I was going crazy.”

“You’re definitely going crazy, you’re just not going crazy by yourself,” I chuckle. She laughs.

“Well, misery loves company so why shouldn’t crazy,” she teases.

“Exactly.”

“Doesn’t it scare you?” she asks seriously.

“What?”

“Knowing it’s all going to come to an end,” she says sadly.

“It terrifies me,” I say honestly. “I hate that I never found you sooner but I’d hate it if I never found you at all.”

“Yeah,” she breathes.

“Are you scared?” I ask.

“Yes, not of dying but of knowing that I’ll never feel anything like this again.”

“That’s ridiculous,” I scoff.

“What?” she asks in confusion.

“Babe, do you honestly think that when I get to heaven I’m not coming to find you — well after I thank the big guy for letting me in of course. But after that, your ass better be prepared to spend an eternity with me because if I’m going to live forever then I’m going to spend every day of it seeing that smile.”

She kisses me. I love it when she kisses me first. I am so in love I should have my balls cut off.
