Southern Player, a full-length standalone romance by Jessica Peterson.

I’m looking for a hot hookup with no strings attached. And I want my older brother’s best friend to step up to the plate…

My dating history is lame. My experiences in bed? Even lamer. As the owner of a thriving business, I’m used to calling the shots. But one place I don’t always want to be in charge is in the bedroom.

Enter Luke Rodgers. My brother’s best friend. Former Major League baseball player. A guy who now hangs out on his farm, sweaty and shirtless, as he nurses a shoulder injury.

If the rumors are true, he also likes to work up a sweat behind closed doors. A total MVP in the sack.

Just the take charge guy I’m looking for.

With Luke and I, it’s game on. And it’s all good until Luke decides he wants forever, and he wants it with me.

I’m just not convinced I can trust Luke. Will he keep playing the field? Or is he really ready to hang up his cleats for good?

Excerpt:

I can’t deny this woman a damn thing.

So I climb onto the bed. The mattress dipping beneath my weight as I crawl to Gracie on my hands and knees.

She is still facing away from me. So I duck down and press my lips to the spot where her neck slopes into her shoulder.

Her skin, warm and soft, pebbles into goose bumps as I kiss her there, nicking the sinew with my teeth.

She sucks in a breath, reaching back to dig her fingers into my hair.

“Luke,” she breathes.

“I love it when you say my name,” I murmur against her skin as I slowly work my way up her neck.

Gracie arches against me, fingernails curling against my scalp.

“Luke,” she says again.

“Yeah?”

“Why do you”—her voice catches when, leaning all my weight on my good arm, I reach around and cup Gracie’s breast—“you talk dirty, but you go slow. Why?”

“Because.” Through the fabric of her shirt, I gather her nipple between my thumb and forefinger and draw it out. “I ain’t rushin’ with you. I been waiting ten Goddamn years to touch you, and I plan to savor every minute. But I am as God made me, baby, and He in all His wisdom gave me a real dirty mouth.”

She moans when I play with her hardened nipple, giving her tit a solid squeeze.

“Never thought I’d like dirty talk,” she says. “But with you—Luke, I love it.”

I grin as I feather my lips over her jaw.

“I noticed.” I nudge her with my nose, and our eyes meet. “Dirty talk aside. I’mma do this nice and proper like, Grace. Meaning I’m gonna take my time and learn your body and draw you out just how you want. Nothing leaves this room. Same as nothing gets left on the table. I’ll give you everything I got, and you better damn well do the same. You want that intensity we talked about? You gotta give me your all, baby girl. You gotta show me everything.”

Her forehead is creased as she searches my eyes for a beat. Then another.

My heart is thudding inside my chest.

“I’ll try,” she says at last. She takes me by surprise when she turns her head a little more and kisses me. A quick kiss, but a hot one. An honest one. “Thank you. For getting it. For doing this with me. It means a lot, and I appreciate it more than you know.”

I look at her. Cock blaring.

“Thank me when I’m done.”

And then I’m getting on my knees and reaching for the hem of her shirt.

EXCERPT TOUR – Evermore (Salvation series novella, brought to you by 1001 Dark Nights) by Corinne Michaels

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels, comes EVERMORE, a new novella in her Salvation Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

About EVERMORE:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes a new story in her Salvation series…

I was poised to become partner at my law firm even before I became secretly engaged to my boss. After being humiliated by him on my wedding day, I can’t face working for him any longer. So I quit, waving my middle finger on my way out.

Now the only things I’m poised for are unemployment and loneliness.

When an opportunity with Cole Security arises, it seems like the perfect way to run, all the way to Virginia Beach. I wasn’t expecting my childhood sweetheart to be there. I definitely wasn’t prepared that when we saw each other again, Benjamin Pryce would be so grown-up. So gorgeous. So Navy SEAL-ish.

And still the same guy who broke my heart when I was fifteen–and could do it again.

They say if you’re fooled once, shame on them. The second time, it’s on you. The third time, it’s going to be me that runs… unless he can convince me to stay forevermore.

Excerpt:

For the first time in my adult life, I don’t know what to write.

I don’t have a plan or an idea on where to go. There are no rules right now. I can do anything, live anywhere and choose something other than what I always thought.

Some might feel very liberated. I feel like I can’t breathe. The lack of order isn’t welcome.

A year ago, my list was solid and workable. Now, there’s too much uncertainty. Is marriage even what I want? Then there’s the fact that all I keep thinking about is Ben. Each time I go to write, he is the first thing I want to put down, which is fucking insane.

Harold never made my list. He was just who was going to fill in that slot.

A knock at the door causes me to jump.

“Shit,” I mutter, pushing the book under some papers so he doesn’t see it, and I try to collect myself as I walk to the door.

I close my eyes, hand on the door handle, release a deep breath, and smile. “Hey,” I say as I open it.

“Hello, gorgeous.” Ben’s deep voice washes over me. “These are for you.”

In his hand is a beautiful bouquet of daisies.

Daisies. “How did you…?”

“Are they not your favorite anymore?”

“They are, but I can’t believe you remembered.”

Ben looks at me like I’m a wounded animal. “Why wouldn’t I?”

Because it’s been so long. Because my stupid fiancé didn’t even know daisies were my favorite. Each year, I’d get lilies or roses as he’d tell me he knew how much I loved them—which I didn’t. I hate lilies. They’re too strong in fragrance and give me headaches. Roses are pretty, but that’s what you put on a casket. Morbid, I know, but after my Nana passed away, roses became associated with death.

Daisies, though, they’re bright and airy. They’re what little girls pick petals from and dream of love. They make me smile.

“It’s just…very sweet. Thank you, Ben.” I lean up on my very tippy toes and press a kiss to his cheek. “Come in, I made food.”

He looks as though he wants to say more, but he nods and enters the house.

Jackson and Catherine’s place is cute and quaint. It’s a little beach bungalow a few blocks off the beach. They bought it a year ago when Catherine was visiting on one of their walks to the lighthouse. She said it was fate and needed it. Jackson, not being able to ever resist his wife, bought it immediately and spent two weeks fixing it up.

While the size isn’t anything great, it has the most spectacular view of the lighthouse where she fell in love with Jackson Cole.

“I haven’t been here since I got my place,” Ben says as he looks around.

“What do you mean?”

Ben’s smile makes my stomach clench. “I lived here before I found my place. Jackson and Cat sort of use this for the Virginia Beach crew as temporary lodging when we’re not sure we’re staying.”

“But you did.”

He takes a step closer and nods. “I did. Are you planning to?”

My initial though is, yes. Yes. I want to stay. I feel more alive since being here than I have in my whole life. More than that, I want him. I want to know why he was the first thing I kept thinking of when I was going to make my list.

“Do you want me to?”

“Yes.”

She refuses to be interested in the hot-shot florist across the street. He is trouble with a capital T. Sexy trouble, but still, a hook-up with Jase is a hard nope.

Desperate to avoid his family’s incessant matchmaking, a fake breakup with the beautiful Heather is just what the florist ordered. “Heather?” Jase stuck tape on the corners of the top poster.

“Hmm?” Her eyes met his again, because she refused to show weakness.

“You catching that?” he asked, his focus returning to the poster and the tape.

“Catching what?”

Poster in hand, he moved to the front window and pressed it against the glass, smoothing it before turning back to her. “Catching the little buzz we have going on between us.”

“A little… The thing is…” C’mon, Heather, be strong. You are the cookie lady now. You don’t date. You are all you need. That’s what the podcast she’d been listening to said to her over and over again. Mantra in hand, she slapped on her I’m-in-charge-here-buddy mask. “It would never work between us.”

The edges of his lips ticked up ever so slightly. “You can’t know that.”

Oh, she knew.

He sauntered toward her.

Unwilling to back down, she stepped toward him. Expression firm, she said, “I can already see exactly how this whole thing would play out if we let it. You’d start with a horrible pickup line.”

“Guilty.” His hands fell to the belt loops of his jeans.

Her palm itched to press against the front of his tee, but she refrained. “Then I’d counter with a witty response. This time, my reply would be even better. Funny, intelligent…everything.”

“Now, that I’d like to hear.” Nothing but a foot of crackling air sizzled between them.

“Trust me, if I had said it, it would have been epic. You can’t repeat something like that. It has to happen in the moment.” She shook her head, the sleek ponytail she’d carefully arranged earlier brushing against the collar of her jacket.

“That right there is why we wouldn’t have worked out. I mean, you couldn’t even come up with a snappier reply.” He crossed his arms, the little veins of his muscled forearms flexing with the motion.

“Oh, I would’ve. It would’ve been the best response in the history of pickup line replies.”

“I don’t believe you.” The glimmer in his eyes lit up his entire face.

He was enjoying this exchange entirely too much.

Control. She needed the power back. “Trust would’ve always been one of your issues in our relationship.”

“Maybe you just couldn’t be honest with me about how you felt. That’s probably why we would have always argued.” He raised his eyebrows in a clear ultimatum.

Challenge accepted.

She stepped the tiniest bit closer to him. “Let’s say you threw out that awful line again. The one about taking me out.”

“I’m with you so far.” He glanced down to the floor in clear acknowledgment of her movement forward, but he held his ground.

“We’d banter for a good bit—”

His face sparked with humor. “Sounds about right.”

“Both of us would get that tingly feeling of attraction. You know the one.” So maybe she made her voice a little breathier than usual. Sue her.

His mouth parted, the exaggerated fullness of his lower lip apparent. “You have a tingly feeling?”

She shook her head and raised a hand. Not touching his chest like she desperately wanted to, but getting within millimeters. “That’s not the important part. Eventually, you would convince me to go on a date.”

“I’d take you to this great taco stand. I love tacos.”

“Despite that, I’d probably let you take me out again. And again,” she said, not willing to acknowledge the way she wanted to nip at his lip with her teeth.

He nodded. “I’m digging this relationship so far.”

“Eventually, you’d ask me to move in. I’d say no. You’d pressure me, even though I wouldn’t be ready.”

“What can I say? I wouldn’t want to spend a night away from you. No use paying for two apartments.”

She shrugged, dropping her hand. “I’d cave, and we’d finally move in together—”

“Do we get to hook up first? Don’t skip that part.” This time he moved forward, just a smidge.

She stayed put. She refused to back up first. “Of course. It would be awful. Sorry Speed Racer, but I need more than three minutes of go time.”

“That’s not what you’d say after you screamed my name.” He leaned forward, the whisper of his words brushing against her ear.

God, there wasn’t but a breath of space between them. She was all turned-on Heather, ready to throw her why-have-a-man-when-you-can-have-cookies resolve away.

His breath smelled of cinnamon candy and coffee, turning her knees effectively to melted butter.

No, she stopped herself. Back to the fictional breakup at hand.

Cookies were just fine for her. Better, even.

“Then we would be horribly irresponsible one night and, surprise, it’s a boy!” She waved her hands and grinned.

He frowned. “I’d never be that irresponsible.”

“It would happen. And then you’d insist we get married in a huge production I’d totally resent.” Now, she stepped to the counter to grab the rest of the posters.

“C’mon, baby. I’d tell you we could keep it small.”

She held the posters against her front like weak card-stock armor. “It wouldn’t matter, you’d be all kinds of grumpy when you stopped getting your full three minutes on top. Before you could say ‘honeymoon,’ we’d hate each other. The divorce would be sweet relief for everyone involved, and we’d never speak again.” She flashed him a goodbye smile. “Aren’t you glad we aren’t doing that?”

About JAGGED INK

The Montgomery Ink: Colorado Springs series continues with a couple fighting to keep what they thought they had and gain what they didn’t know they needed.

Roxie Montgomery met her soul mate when she least expected it. When he asked her to marry her, she thought her happily ever after was only just beginning. Then, she found that walking into the sunset was much harder than her favorite books made it out to be. After a crushing loss, she feels as though she doesn’t know her husband anymore, or rather…she doesn’t know herself.

Carter Marshall has loved Roxie since the first time he saw her. But as the days pass between them, so does the distance. He doesn’t know how to show her that he’s all in, and honestly doesn’t know if she’s in at all. When an accident changes everything, they’ll have to decide if what they have can be salvaged, or if starting over is the answer. Or even possible.

Without fighting, without a true new beginning, sometimes, the remnants of what was lost can leave anyone jagged, shells of what they were before. It will take more than the idea of forever for Roxie and Carter to find themselves again, but as the Montgomerys know, nothing worth fighting for is easy.

Excerpt:

Roxie moaned in her sleep, her dream too good to keep her awake. It didn’t matter that she’d fallen asleep for a nap at four in the afternoon, she didn’t want to leave this dream.

She kept her eyes closed, knowing she was halfway into her dream and half awake. She was going to pretend it wasn’t just a dream. Because as long as she pretended, she didnt have to think about the fact that she was dreaming about Carter.

Carter’s smooth lips, and his even smoother moves. Shed always loved the fact that he held her close after they made love, that he gently ran his hands over her to make sure that everything was just right and ensure that everything they had was exactly what they needed.

But he was always touching her, especially when they first got together.

And just like in this dream, he would run his hands down her body, touching every single inch of her until she was panting with need, moaning his name until she came. But he would never let her come. Not right away. No, he would make her wait, make her beg. And she knew that he was in as much tortured pain as she was. Because his hard cock strained against the zipper of his jeans or was hard and wet at the tip if they were naked. Because that’s how they were with each other. Him wanting her as much as she wanted him.

GUEST POST – Tumble (A Dogwood Lane novel) by Adriana Locke

Guest Post: Spend a Morning with Dane Madden, The Hero of TUMBLE

I looked in the mirror this morning to shave. As I lifted the razor to my cheek, I saw a little scar that sits just to the side of my right eye. It’s not something most people would ever notice. Hell, I don’t notice it every day. But the light caught it just right and suddenly it was all I could see.

I’m Dane Madden, the carpenter, not Dane Madden the philosopher, so why I stood there for a good five minutes remembering the night I got that scar is beyond me. But I did. I thought about how the barbed wire caught my skin and ripped the flesh and how Neely Kimber’s face filled with so much concern I was kind of glad I was bleeding.

She and I were inseparable back then. From the moment she opened the door and our eyes locked, there was a bond between us that grew stronger. We went from finding ways to bump into each other, to hanging out with a group of friends, to dating in the sincerest way. She wasn’t just a girl. Neely wasn’t a pretty face I wanted on my arm, or in my bed as things evolved, like many of the guys I knew back then labeled their girlfriends. She was more than that to me—my best friend. My confidant when things with Dad went sour. My trusty right hand that bailed my ass out of more trouble than I was worth.

The night my eye was cut, she remembered to go back and get my hat so it wouldn’t be found the next day. Had she not done picked up the evidence, the farmer whose cows my friends and I had been trying to tip (terrible idea, if you’re wondering) would’ve been able to track the mess in his field to me and my friends. Dogwood Lane is a small town. Word gets around easy enough without trying.

Then there was the night my brother Matt, our friend Penn, and I went corning around Halloween. That’s another terrible idea, if you’re wondering, and involves throwing shucked corn at cars passing by. Let’s just say a certain driver in an oversized pick-up truck didn’t appreciate the sentiment. After being chased on foot to the outskirts of town, we had to hide in a chicken coop until Neely could come get us.

Despite my antics, she was there. She might’ve laughed at me or pointed out how stupid we were, but she took my worst right along with my best.

Our lives were entwined by shenanigans, stories, and so much love. Damn, I loved her. I didn’t know where she stopped and I started. I didn’t want to know. She was the best thing in my life. She made me better. And that was the ruination of us because I couldn’t bear to think I would make her life worse.

Seeing her again after all these years lit a fire inside me that I didn’t think was possible. I haven’t felt this burn since the day I walked off her porch having broken her heart. I want to talk to her, touch her, hold her and I can’t do any of it. Even though so much of our lives were built together, our memories from the easiest time of our lives shared, we aren’t those people anymore.

And it’s all my fault.

Tumble Excerpt:

Splat!

The sound of the hammer crushing my thumb—swung with more force than was necessary, to boot—ricochets across the front lawn. The tool falls from my hand, striking against the sawhorse, and flips into the soft grass with a gentle thud.

“Son of a…!” My hand shakes, the top of my thumb threatening to explode. I tilt my head to the sky and try to find some peace in the clouds.

I come up empty. “Matt!” I call to my younger brother. “I’m taking ten.”

He nods from halfway up the ladder leaned against the side of the house.

Wrapping my good hand around my thumb, I head toward my truck. Sounds of construction ring out behind me. It’s usually music to my ears, the lifeblood of the Madden name. But each cut of a sawblade, buzz of a power drill, and swing of a hammer feels like a distraction this morning. I have a throbbing thumb to show for it.

Beads of sweat cluster along my forehead. I remove my hat with my good hand and run the back of my forearm along my brow.

“Damn it.” Everything feels sticky. Mildly irritating. And the progress on the project that usually energizes me has failed me epically this morning. I just don’t want to be here. Not that I have a better place to be. Quite frankly, I have a lot of places I shouldn’t be, and with Neely, or thinking about Neely, is one of them.

I would’ve recognized her anywhere. Same gray eyes that glimmer like she’s about to tell you a secret. Full lips that spread into a smile so infectious you can’t help but feel your own mouth following suit. The hint of floral perfume, the golden hair that may as well be silk, and the aura about her that’s just as strong as the day she left Dogwood Lane and me—it’s all the same. It’s like time forgot to age her. She somehow has become more beautiful, sexier, stronger.

The world hates me. I’ve postulated this for a long time, but it’s obvious today.

The tailgate of my truck lowers. Scooping a handful of ice from the cooler in the bed into a bandanna, I wrap it around my injured digit. The relief lasts only a few moments.

“What are you doing down here?” Penn rests his forearms over the side of the truck, the tattoos carved in his skin like mini masterpieces on full display. He eyes my makeshift bandage. “What happened to you?”

“Hammer,” I groan, adjusting the ice.

“That’s interesting.”

“How you figure?”

“Never knew you to hit yourself with a hammer before. I find that interesting.”

“If that’s interesting, you need a hobby. Or you could work like I’m paying you to do . . .”

“I have a hobby, thank you, and you should’ve seen her last night,” he says, smacking his lips together. “Lord Almighty, she’s a—”

“Penn.”

“Yeah?”

The tip of my finger sticks out of the bandanna. It’s bright red and hot to the touch despite the ice packed around it. “All your escapades really sound the same at this point.”

“Is that jealousy I hear?” He cups his hand to his ear. “I thought so. Not my fault you’re in a dry spell.”

Leaning against the truck, I look at him. “Jealousy isn’t how I’d describe it. But if that makes ya feel good, go for it.”

“My hobby makes me feel good.” He moves his lips around, like he’s fighting the next words trying to pop out. He does this when he knows he shouldn’t say something but can’t quite convince himself not to. “From the looks of you, I’d say you’re more than jealous. I’d say you’re . . . tempted.”

My tongue presses on the roof of my mouth. “Tempted to what?”

He leans against the truck, too, the gold St. Christopher’s medal he’s worn since elementary school clamoring against the side. The corners of his lips nearly touch the corners of his eyes. He knows.

“Word travels fast, huh?” I say, prodding around to see if my guess is right.

He slow blinks. Twice.

“What?” I ask.

“That’s all you have to say about Neely being back in town? ‘Word travels fast.’ What’s wrong with you?”

We don’t have time for that conversation.

I sigh. “What do you want me to say?”

“I’d love to have been a fly on the wall for that little run-in.” Penn snickers. “Did you stutter around like I imagine? Or did you not manage to say an entire sentence?”

Working my jaw back and forth, I point a finger his way. “You better stop while you’re ahead.”

He reads me correctly, and his animation drops a notch. “Really, though. How’d it go? But before you answer that, let me toss out there that I heard sparks were flying all over the diner so hot Claire had to call the fire department.”

I shake my head. “Shut up.”

“Just telling you what I heard.”

“The firemen were there to order food, you idiot.”

He thinks he’s onto something. There’s a glee in his face that means only one thing: it’s going to be a long day around here.

“So, what happened?” he asks, resting his arms over the truck bed.

“You know, sometimes I think you should’ve been a girl with all the gossiping you do.”

“This isn’t gossip,” he contends. “This is Neely-freaking-Kimber, man. Every memory I have of my entire adolescence has her in it. She bailed me out of jail when I was too scared to call my dad and you and Matt were passed out on moonshine. Remember that?”

My chuckle is so hard, it causes my thumb to throb. “I forgot about that. She was pissed.”

“Neely came through, though. God, I miss her.”

Those last words echo through my mind.

I have shoved her out of my head for the last few years. Took over Dad’s business, took care of my business. Trudged forward without her because that was the only choice I had. I hardly even think about her anymore unless someone brings her up in conversation.

So why do I itch to crawl into the truck and hunt her down?

I laugh. “Whatever you want Mallory. Whatever you want,” I say, barely holding it together.
“Challenge accepted,” she says grinning. This gives me a perfect view of her straight white teeth. Fuck, even those are pretty. God, who thinks teeth are pretty besides dentists? She puts on the first season of a show. A few hours and several episodes later, I’m hooked. It’s hilarious.
“What is this?” I ask. I get really into the show, but every so often, I look over at Mallory and stare at her. Thankfully, she doesn’t see me. I am sure I look like a fucking creeper.
“The British version of The Office. I’ve seen the American one, but I think this one is funnier.”
“Don’t you need to write?” I ask. She smiles brightly and her brown eyes shine with it.
“You know about that, huh?”
“Margo told me,” I say, laughing.
“Oh Lordy, I can just imagine what she said. I do need to write, but I’m having a better time with you,” she says, smiling yet again. I can’t help smiling as well.
“Me too.” Right then, my grumbling stomach reminds me that I haven’t eaten since five this morning. “So, what’s good to eat around here?”
“Is this your first time in New York?” she asks, tapping her finger on her chin. Damn, she is adorable.
“Yes,” I say, nodding.
“Well then, pizza of course. Do you want to go out or order in?”
“Order in. I’m exhausted from traveling today.” I’m still leery of social situations, I know that I’m cringing, but she doesn’t say anything. She just nods understandingly.
“Okay,” she says. “I know the perfect place to order from. What kind do you want?”
“Pepperoni and mushroom,” I reply.
“Ooh, me too,” she says, and I listen as she grabs her phone and orders two large pies.
“That’s ambitious,” I say when she hangs up.
“What?”
“Two large pies? How are you ever going to eat that much?”
“You’d be surprised; besides, I love leftover pizza.” She shrugs as she gets up from the couch and heads into the kitchen. “I have red wine or Foster’s,” she yells. I already don’t like that she is out of my sight.

HEAVEN SENT】
There wasn’t anything Shade didn’t know about his wife, or so he thought. When another man wanted Lily, it didn’t come as a surprise. What did was that she hadn’t told him.
His “Angel” had been sent from heaven just for him, not for another who was trying to steal what was his.
Some lessons had to be learned the hard way and “when you burn, you learn” was his favorite lesson to teach.
CHASING RAINBOWS】
Ice had never believed in happily ever after … until he fell in love with Grace. He had put a ring on her finger, trying to tie her to him before she came to her senses and realized there was nothing redeeming about him. So, he wasn’t surprised that their marriage was on the rocks.
She might be chasing rainbows, trying to find the man she believed he was, but rainbows never lasted, and Ice had never pretended to be anything but what he was—a cold-blooded Predator.
She didn’t realize you don’t have to chase after something that’s already been caught.
HALO FOR THREE】
Hammer and Jonas were on the hunt for a woman to share. However, either they couldn’t agree on the right woman, or she wanted no part of being in a ménage. That they found Mika on Valentine’s Day gave them hope that they had finally found the woman that they could spend the rest of their lives with … until she disappeared the next day, leaving them with an empty bed and no way to find her.
She might have escaped for now, believing she had gotten off scot-free, but the bounty hunters were determined to catch their fleeing third.
She might not know it yet, but some halos were made to be shared.

“I was born in a small town in Kentucky. My family began poor, but worked their way to owning a restaurant. My mother was one of the best cooks I have ever known, and she instilled in all her children the value of hard work, and education.
Taking after my mother, I’ve always loved to cook, and became pretty good if I do say so myself. I love to experiment and my unfortunate family has suffered through many. They now have learned to steer clear of those dishes. I absolutely love the holidays and my family puts up with my zany decorations.
For now, my days are spent writing, writing, and writing. I have two children, my daughter is also an author, and my son just tries not to blush when someone asks him about my books.
All my books are written for one purpose- the enjoyment others find in them, and the expectations of my fans that inspire me to give it my best.”

BLOG TOUR – Irresistible (Cloverleigh Farms #1) by Melanie Harlow

Irresistible - BT Banner.jpg

“Sexy, heartfelt–did I mention sexy? With the perfect touch of the forbidden, Melanie Harlow has outdone herself with single dad Mack and Frannie’s story!”

— Ilsa Madden-Mills, Wall Street Journal bestselling author

Irresistible, an all-new fun and swoony standalone from USA Today bestselling author Melanie Harlow, is available now!

Irresistible FOR WEB.jpg

I’m a full-time single dad to three daughters and CFO at Cloverleigh Farms. I don’t have time to fall in love—I’m too busy trying to run a business, keep the red socks out of the white laundry, and get the damn pillowcases on without owing a dollar to the swear jar.

Sure, Frannie Sawyer is beautiful and sweet, but she’s twenty-seven, the boss’s daughter, and my new part-time nanny—which means she’s completely off-limits. It’s bad enough I can’t stop fantasizing about her, what kind of jerk would I be if I acted on the impulse to kiss her?

(Exactly the kind of jerk you’re thinking.)

Actually, I’m worse than that—because I didn’t stop with a kiss, and now I can’t stay away. She makes me feel like myself again. She reminds me what it’s like to want something just for me. She’s everything I ever needed, but nothing I ever imagined.

I’m a former Marine. I should have had the strength to resist her from the start.

But I didn’t. And now I have to choose between the life I want and the life she deserves.

Even if it means giving her up.

Excerpt:

I was holding my breath.

I wasn’t even sure why, but it was something about the way Mack was looking at me. And the tension in his body—the taut muscles in his neck. The grip of his fingers on the edge of the counter. The set of his jaw. It gave the impression of restraint. Like he was holding himself back.

Something unfamiliar hummed in the air between us. I could feel it—he wanted me the way I wanted him.

No wonder I couldn’t breathe.

Then he cleared his throat and turned away from me, cutting off the current. “Sure. Everybody needs to make mistakes now and then.”

I’d forgotten I’d even asked the question.

He turned the sink on, rinsed his dishes, and placed them in the dishwasher. I stood there staring at his muscular back, at the width of his shoulders, at the snug fit of his jeans on his butt. If I were his and he were mine, I’d go over and wrap my arms around his waist, press my cheek to his back. Then he’d turn around, winding his arms around me. He’d lower his lips to mine, and—

“I should get you home,” he said, interrupting my fantasy. “Want to grab your coat?”

“Sure.” But I didn’t really want to leave. I wanted to stay in this warm, chaotic house with him and the girls. Pretend I belonged here. Pretend I belonged to him.

Genre: Paranormal Shapeshifter Romance
Release Date: February 28, 2019
Cover Design: Natasha Snow Designs

Even a lone wolf’s heart can be broken.
Nikolai’s life was going just fine—until he was betrayed. He’s lost his job, his family’s trust, and his purpose, all for the cost of falling for a pretty bear. Now his friends have turned against him and they won’t stop until he’s dead. The last thing he wants to do is join forces with the woman responsible, but she might be his only chance at survival.
Getting kidnapped and shot was not part of Claire’s plan—and neither was falling for the lieutenant of the very organization she swore to destroy. Now working with Nik is dredging up all sorts of unwanted, heated memories. She couldn’t resist him when they first met, and nothing has changed when she sees his handsome face again.
But when rogues threaten their families, claws come out. Keeping secrets might have been their job description, but they’ll have to come clean to beat their enemies.
CHAPTER ONE
NIK
The dimly lit corridor was empty as Nik made his way toward the server room. He flicked off the safety on his gun then glanced over his shoulder to confirm that Stevens and Novak were actually doing what they’d been told for once. At their nervous nods, he faced forward again, reaching for the door handle.
His shift was about to end, just forty minutes until he could shuck his gun belt and go find Masha. Take me out on a real date, she’d said last night as they’d lain on his bed, sweaty and breathing hard after the most spectacular sex he’d ever experienced. He’d have promised her anything right then: a date, a dozen dates, his heart and soul—so he’d kissed her and later made dinner reservations for tonight.
“On three, I’ll open the door. Novak, you cover Stevens while he enters.” He kept his voice at a murmur, not wanting to spook the intruder who’d tripped the silent alarm.
How he’d gotten past the other security measures—an armed guard and an eight-digit keypad—was a question Nik would be asking as soon as the asshole was shackled to a chair. The guy had to be pretty stupid. Like he was going to get away with breaking into the room where Maxwell kept all the Guard’s backups?
The hum of the cooling vents drowned out any sounds coming from the room beyond, and Nik could barely detect the scent of something living over the musty smell of dust. This house wasn’t one of the luxurious mansions Maxwell liked to rent. They’d vacated one of those just days ago after the report had come in that the Shifter Assembly of North America had captured one of their people. The hyena was a nasty piece of work, and Nik wasn’t sad to see him gone, but he’d been taken alive, which meant he could be questioned. He could be turned. So Maxwell wasn’t taking any chances with this new intruder. Three to one might have seemed like overkill, but they couldn’t let him slip through their fingers. Not if he had answers to give.
“One…two…three!”
With a sharp push, he threw open the door, stepping to the side in the same movement to hide from a potential attack. Novak, overeager monkey that he was, barreled right past him, his gun raised to a point where he was sure to clock himself in the eye if he actually fired his weapon. He clearly needed more hours at the shooting range. Stevens covered for him, though, staying back.
Novak’s voice sounded from inside the room, “Oh fuck, Nik. I mean, sir.”
Something about his tone had Nik moving, even though he hadn’t received the all-clear from his trainee. He stepped over the threshold, gun ready, and swept the room for the intruder. Here, the scent of another living creature that had barely filtered through to the corridor became stronger, more pronounced. His body reacted to it before his mind caught up. And then he saw her.
Masha was sitting cross-legged on the floor of the server room, her computer in her lap and her palms up. Novak pointed his gun at her. Stevens was hot on Nik’s heels, and now the two of them were aiming at his—his what? Girlfriend? He thought he might be sick as the truth rolled over him like a tidal wave. She had no reason to be there. Which meant… Fuck.
The defiant look in her eyes faltered when he barked the order. “Cuff her.”
“Nik, wait,” she called, but he turned from her, putting away his gun. There was a scuffle, something crashed, and Novak yelled at her to get back down. Nik flinched but kept going. A blow connected, then a soft groan nearly ripped him in two.
A weight settled on him, the crushing realization that he’d been fooled, that every good thing that had happened in the past two months had been a lie.
“Nik!” she gasped, then yelped in pain.
He did not turn back.
***
Entering the living room, Nik was relatively sure his face was blank. Hard to tell since he’d spent the past hour trying to get his emotions under control, punching a bag in the gym—without gloves—until he’d skinned his knuckles and sweat poured off him. He’d had a cold shower to cool down and changed his clothes, all the while breathing through his mouth and keeping the windows open, though the night temperatures had dropped below freezing. But Masha’s scent lingered. He’d sat on his bed, and a cloud of it rose around him like a seductive, deceptive embrace.
He’d chucked her pillow through the window, startling another young guard into shifting. At the gangly elk’s confused stare, Nik had cursed and yelled an order to burn that fucking pillow. Clearly not his finest moment.
He was better now. A fresh shirt that only smelled of his detergent, a gun strapped in his shoulder harness, a prayer that Maxwell wasn’t in the mood to make a spectacle out of her. He could face his lover and be as professional as his reputation claimed he was.
But one look at Masha, and he realized his poker face would do him no good at all. She was tied to a chair in the middle of the room, her head hanging forward so wisps of her short black hair obscured her face. The sharp scent of her fear hit him hard, and her labored breaths told him she was in bad shape. What scared him the most was the plastic tarp that covered the dusty wooden floor and the carpet. A tarp meant to catch any bodily fluids that were released during the…questioning, and possibly to wrap up the remains after his boss had extracted all the information he needed.
Nik had his gun out before he knew what he was doing. The two lieutenants who stood guard by the door advanced, going for their own weapons, so Nik forced himself to relax, letting his hands drop. But he didn’t holster his gun. Then he focused all his attention on his boss, even though his gaze was drawn to Masha.
“Thank you for joining us,” Reid Maxwell said, his voice mock-polite. “I’m sorry we started without you.”
“What’s going on?”
At the sound of his voice, Masha lifted her head, and Nik couldn’t help the curse that slipped out of his mouth. Her face was a ruin, blood dribbling from her lip, and one eye already swelling shut. From the way she grimaced with every shallow breath, her ribs were broken or at least bruised. He moved toward her; he couldn’t even process what he was doing. They questioned suspects, yes, but not like this. Never—
“Uh-uh, Nicky.” Maxwell’s soft admonishment stopped him dead. “I can’t let you at her just yet. You think you’re angry now? You want to hurt her for betraying your trust? Wait until you hear who our little friend really is.”
Hurt her? Maxwell’s words refused to pierce Nik’s shock. He thought Nik wanted to hurt her even more? God, yes, he wanted to shake her, ask what the hell she’d been thinking, breaking into a restricted room, but she was defenseless, unarmed. A woman. If he hit her with enough force, he could… Bile rose in his throat, and he wondered, stupidly, whether the tarp would also serve to protect the floor from his vomit.
Novak, his eyes round with apprehension, stepped closer to Nik, offering a thin file. Nik reached out to take it, anything to keep his mind from imagining how Masha got those bruises. Which of them had hurt her? He’d kill them, he’d—
The black-and-white photo inside the file was of Masha, a candid shot of her in the street, her face thoughtful as she studied her phone. Her hair was longer, a silky mass that fell around her shoulders, and black-framed glasses perched on her nose. But the clothes made the biggest difference. The Masha on the photo wore a fitted dress that even Nik recognized as elegant, a fancy trench coat and a handbag that probably cost more than his monthly salary. And heels. Sleek high heels that sent an involuntary curl of lust into his gut. But it wasn’t her outfit that boiled his blood. It was the building behind her: a glass-paneled wall of a corporate high-rise in downtown Manhattan that he knew too well from hours of surveillance that he’d done on the place.
“What’s this?” he choked out, turning to Masha.
This Masha, the short-haired tomboy who’d wormed her way into his bed, spat blood onto the tarp. Nik saw how much it cost her to lift her head, to look him in the eyes.
“This right here is Claire Thibault,” Maxwell said, stepping over the spit and placing a hand on the nape of her neck.
She flinched at the gesture, just slightly, but enough for Nik to know it was his boss who’d inflicted the injuries, not one of the other lieutenants.
“She can’t be.”
“You’d think Thibault would take better care of his little heir, wouldn’t you? Fucking cowards, sending a woman to do their job.” Maxwell’s voice was deceptively light as he cupped Masha’s face and lifted her chin. “But the family resemblance is there. She even has the birthmark.”
Nobody had ever seen the heiress of the largest North American shifter clan. Protected and kept hidden in their Canadian stronghold, that was the word on the streets concerning Claire Thibault. People joked about her—was she so ugly Thibault hid her from the world? Pregnant and busy making an army of little bears?
Bears. The thought clicked into place, a missing puzzle piece. Masha had claimed she was a half-blood brown bear, and from her name, he’d assumed she had Russian roots like him. As a half-blood, her shifts didn’t come easily, she’d said, explaining her reluctance to wear her animal form. But if it was true, if she was really Claire Thibault, her other form was a black bear. Fuck. The betrayal stung. The scents were too close to distinguish, so the ruse had worked perfectly. Everything about her had been calculated to make him trust her, like her.
And the birthmark? Nik’s heart sank even lower. How could he have missed it? The identifying mark of all Thibault shifters, a stamp of their pure blood, of their superiority.
“You can see why I was worried to find someone breaking into our server room.” Maxwell dropped her chin and wiped the blood off his fingers.
“You knew who she was before you sent us in?” His boss was a sadist but he usually reserved this kind of subterfuge for his enemies, not his highest-ranking officers. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Nik rubbed his hand through his hair. “Fuck, Reid, how did you even find out?”
Maxwell snorted. “It was too easy. I should have thought of flipping one of the Council members years ago. A threat here, a fat check there, and voilà, one Councilwoman all too ready to rat out this little mole.” He grinned, the smile reminding Nik of days when their world had been a lot less bleak and angry. “Did I go too far with the animal metaphors? Never mind. All that matters is that we have one very important guest here.” He waved his gun in Masha’s—Claire’s—direction.
Then he stepped closer and backhanded her. The chair toppled over with the force of the blow. Masha’s head whipped back, droplets of blood splattering the tarp, and Nik snarled, prickles of heat all over his skin announcing he was about to shift.
He felt more than saw the lieutenants close in as Maxwell turned on him.
“What, Nik?” he snapped. “You don’t want to see her hurt? What did you expect, that I’d let her go?” Leaning in close, he murmured, “Do you want me to look weak?”
Panic rising in his chest, Nik had to force his jaw to unclench. “No, sir. But she won’t be worth much as a hostage if she’s dead.”
Maxwell cocked his head to the side. “See, you’re saying the right things. Yes, Thibault would pay more if I could convince him that his precious princess hasn’t been hurt. But you know we need information. And if it were anyone else, you’d be the first to agree. You’re my best interrogator! Yet here you are…” He drew in a deep breath, and Nik fought not to step back. “…smelling of fear. You’re shaking, Nicky. So tell me. What are you hiding?”
A hundred answers flitted through Nik’s mind, none convincing enough for Maxwell to drop this line of questioning. The worst that could happen… Oh, who was he kidding? The worst was already happening right in front of him.
“I should have worked out who she was.” The truth was all he could give his boss. The man he’d once thought was his closest friend. “I’m sorry.”
“So why are you afraid?” Maxwell’s amber eyes burned holes into him. “Don’t you want to see her punished? She fooled you. Fucked you. So she could run back to Daddy and tell him all about it.”
Nik’s stomach roiled at the thought, and he shook his head, half to say no, he didn’t want her punished anymore, and half to deny that this was what their relationship could be boiled down to.
Maxwell clicked his tongue. “You’re growing soft on me. I need you sharp, Nicky, if we’re going to win this war.” He turned back to Masha, who was still lying on the floor, and gave her a casual kick in the ribs that had her whimpering. Then he waved his free hand at Novak and Stevens. “Pick her up.”
The younglings scrambled forward, feet slipping on the tarp, and heaved Masha’s chair upright. Then they almost ran back to the corner of the room, eyes darting between Nik and Masha, as if they were hoping for him to tell them what to do. So he jerked his head toward the door. There was no need for them to witness this.
Maxwell watched with narrowed eyes as Nik’s youngest trainees left and only the two lieutenants remained. Bach and Moers each took one corner of the room. The three men stared at him, but he couldn’t move. Couldn’t think past the crushing blow that had shattered all hopes he’d had for his future, for their future. He couldn’t look at the mess that had been his lover’s beautiful face.
Nik didn’t step closer to Masha, and Maxwell lifted his arms. “What are you waiting for? We need answers.”
Masha’s dark eyes met his, and he knew he was screwed. He would never hit her. He was sick to his stomach with guilt from having left her alone with these people. The irony didn’t escape him—he was usually an eager member of ‘these people’. So many times, he had questioned men and gotten answers. He’d always been good at getting answers. But now, there was only one answer he could give his boss.
“No.”

Zoe Ashwood is a romance writer with a passion for sweet stories with a sexy twist. While she’s always been a reader, Zoe’s writing used to be limited to diary scribbles and bad (really bad) teenage poetry. Then she participated in NaNoWriMo 2015 and never looked back.
Some 400,000 words later, she’s still in love with the art of making up stories—and making her characters fall in love. Trust the Wolf is her debut novel.
When she’s not writing, Zoe works as a literary translator. She’s happily married to her best friend and has two small boys who are as stubborn as they’re cute.
She’s active on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, but her newsletter or Facebook Group are the best way of keeping in touch!
