BLURB:

Holland Kelly wasn’t a people person. Okay, that’s not true, she wasn’t one particular man person. That man? Her next-door neighbor Dick Brooks. Fine, his real name was Reid, but Dick sounded better.

Life would have been perfect if she never had to interact with him again.

Unfortunately, life wasn’t perfect.

Now she is stuck spending hours with the neighbor she has always hated while they work to save their homes.

Have his eyes always been that shade?

Has he always been so good looking?

And those lips..

EXCERPT 1:

Just after three, Holland still hadn’t showed, so I decided that I’d get dinner going just in case I convinced her to stay. What was I thinking? The woman was so insufferable she would probably show up tomorrow morning just to leave me hanging. Still, I found myself in the kitchen and started chopping vegetables.

“I thought that I told you I wouldn’t be here tonight for dinner,” my sister said as she came into the kitchen and examined the two New York strips that I had set out to defrost. Ellie had moved in with me a little over a year ago after her divorce, and probably wasn’t leaving anytime soon.

“Yep, you told me.” I reached into the refrigerator and grabbed the stuff to make a salad.

“Then why two steaks? Are you on some protein kick that I don’t know about?”

“Holland is coming over.”

Ellie started pounding her chest and coughing. “Uh-uh, Holland? As in our next door neighbor Holland Kelly, the one that would rather run you over than look at you? The Holland who I have yet to hear call you by anything other than Dick Brooks, that Holland?”

“Yep.”

“And you think serving food that require knives to cut is a good idea?”

I stopped pulling apart the lettuce. “Maybe I didn’t think this one out totally.”

“You think?” Ellie picked up her purse. “Well, if there’s blood everywhere when I get home, at least you can’t say that I didn’t warn you.

Excerpt 2 – NSFW

“Take me to your secret lair.” I smiled and winked.

“Makes me sound like a monster,” he groaned as he slid a hand under my shirt and cupped my breast.

“Or a beast.”

“I’ll show you a beast.”

“Brag much?” But I had already felt him, I knew that he wasn’t bragging, but I couldn’t stop myself from aggravating him.

He turned and carried me, I hadn’t really had a chance to look at his home, and part of me wanted to do that but at the same time, I wanted him. I found the best of both worlds kissing his collarbone. Don’t judge, I know that I looked like a friggin’ vampire, but I could kiss and look over his shoulder as he carried me up the sprawling staircase. It was like something out of Gone With the Wind. I kissed as he passed several closed doors and then moved into what I figured was his bedroom. If it wasn’t his, someone was in for a shock.

His king-size bed was situated under a large half-moon shaped window, and he came to a stop next to it. He slowly let my legs down and held me close to him until he was sure that I was steady on my feet.

“Get up on the bed,” he ordered. I kicked off my shoes and then crawled onto the thick comforter. “Stand up.”

I did as ordered and then turned to face him. Apparently, I wasn’t close enough because he pulled me forward so that I was right in front of him and he was level with my pussy. “Hold on, sweetheart, I’ll be with you in a second.” He leaned forward and blew hot air that seemed to soak through the denim and make me very aware of just how soaked my panties were.

With one hand, he pulled the button on my jeans free and then tugged the zipper down. Then he slowly slid them down my legs and helped me step out of them.

For a moment I freaked, totally forgetting which panties I had worn, but a glance told me I was in my Friday ones. For once, I was wearing the right panties on the right day. I usually just reached in and grabbed a pair. As long as they were clean, what did I care?

Slowly he came around and cupped my butt, his fingertips softly massaging my cheeks.

“Are you sure?” His voice slipped into a husky timbre.

Actions were louder than words so I dropped to my knees and kissed him. He kissed me back, and my tongue slipped inside and tangled with his. That was all the control he let me have before he was pressing forward and demanding more from me. A small whimper slid from my mouth. I couldn’t think, and I could hardly breathe while I was experiencing one of the most soul-stealing kisses of my life.

The feel of him so close, the warmth of his skin, his tongue continuing to plunge deeper each time it found mine. The air between us sparked, and he caught my bottom lip between his teeth and bit it softly.

His hands trailed down my sides, curving over my hips and then hooking under me to bring my legs out so that I was flat on my back and my legs were hanging off the bed. He slowly slid my panties down as he let out a chuckle.

“What’s so funny?”

“You. Do you normally forget the day of the week and need to check your underwear to be certain?”

“Shut up and get undressed.”

He was grinning as he pulled back, and I propped myself up on my elbows, ready for the show. I didn’t dare blink for fear that I might miss something as he toed off his boots and then pulled his T-shirt over his head. Holy hell, he was built. Okay, I knew the man was in shape, but this should be illegal. He even had that perfectly formed V that slightly showed above the waistband of his jeans, and I was dying to get my hands on it.

When he unbuttoned the top button of his Levi button-fly jeans, I held my breath. Was he a boxer or briefs guy or maybe a boxer brief guy? Please, just no tighty whities.

When the last button was undone and he slid his jeans off I felt like I should do penitence because the man was commando and his cock . . . oh my lord, it was huge.

About Danielle

Before becoming a romance writer, Danielle was a body double for Heidi Klum and a backup singer for Adele. Now, she spends her days trying to play keep away from Theo James, who won’t stop calling her or asking her out.

And all of this happens before she wakes up and faces reality where in fact she is a 50-something mom with grown kids. She’s been married longer than Theo’s been alive, and she now gets her kicks riding a Harley.

As far as her body, she can thank Ben & Jerry’s for that, as well as gravity and vodka. But she says that she could never be Adele’s backup since she never stops saying the F-word long enough to actually sing.

Danielle writes about kickass women with even better shoes and the men that try to tame them (silly, silly men).

Jack: Stopping by the station tomorrow?
I laughed at his transparency and typed:
Are you requesting a bakery delivery?
Jack: Nope just want to see you.
I shook my head at that.
Pretty sure you only want my baked goods.
Jack: That too.
My stomach flipped at his comment. As much as I wanted to pass it off as Jack being
friendly, I couldn’t. He was flirting. My mind raced with the possibilities. Was he finally making a move? God knows, I’d never made one. I turned the mixer off, covered the batter, and placed it in the fridge overnight. I would fry the donuts in the morning.
I wanted Jack to see me as a strong, independent woman. One he could see himself with. I just had no idea how to be that person.
I looked down to find flour on my pajamas, so I quickly changed. I checked my phone when
I finally eased under the covers.
Jack: Sweet dreams, Ms. Baker.

Excerpt
Intro:
My heroine, Violet, speaks French. Here is where she teaches Walker how to
say
To kiss in French…
“To kiss is embrasser.”
“Em-brah-say,” he parroted.
Violet usually hated the way French sounded when a non-native speaker tried it.
Walker didn’t pronounce the words perfectly, but he didn’t butcher them, either. And somehow he made each one sexier in his own rugged way.
“How would you—embrasser me?” he added.
She laughed. “First I’d give you more warning than I did this morning. I’d say, Je veux t’embrasser, which means I want to kiss you.” And did she ever.
Nothing was more of a tease than being close enough to kiss him, wanting to kiss him, and not kissing him. How did he exercise such restraint?
Or maybe he didn’t want her as much as she wanted him.
“Je veux t’embrasser,” he repeated, his accent a little better this time.
“That’s good. You’re getting the hang of it.”
“No,” Walker said. He let his bottom lip brush hers, and she sucked in a breath. “Je.Veux. T’embrasser.”
Her throat went bone dry, and she struggled to swallow.
“Then kiss me already.”

Soon I’ll find out what really matters, and that the worst lies are the lies you tell to yourself.

From international bestselling author SC Daiko comes a gripping new standalone romance with all the feels.

Tonight, Zoe wasn’t wearing the halter-neck dress. She appeared in figure-hugging jeans and a blue cotton blouse that set off the topaz in her beautiful irises. After declining a glass of wine, she sat next to me, shooting me a look from under her dark lashes.
Mrs K arrived with our starter course, a fresh vegetable salad made with cucumbers, tomatoes and onions. She served us and returned to the kitchen.
I swirled the wine in my glass. “I’m sorry if I was a little abrupt when we said goodnight yesterday.”
“Abrupt? You were more than abrupt.” Her eyes flashed. “You were downright rude.”
“I’m not a nice man. I don’t do ‘nice’. I can’t.”
“Why?”
Ever forthright.
“If I show any weakness, I’ll be finished.” I lifted my fork and speared a tomato.
She took a sip of water. “Being nice isn’t the same as being weak, I don’t think.”
“You are right, rybka. It isn’t.” I shook my head. “I guess I’ve just gotten out of the habit.”
She chewed some salad and swallowed. “Were you horrible to your wife? Is that why you got divorced?”
“None of your concern,” I snapped, slamming my hand down on the table. Dishes rattled and the water in Zoe’s glass sloshed over the edge.
She shot me a withering look. “There you go again, being a prick. I’m only trying to understand you, Taras.”

About One More Round

History doesn’t have to repeat itself… or does it?
GIA
Life was on track, going great,
And I couldn’t have been happier.
But then he walks back in,
The tall, dark, broody blast from my past,
The one that got away,
Or shall I say, the one I pushed away,
Now, he’s pushing the boundaries,
Demanding answers,
Ready to bring the past to the present,
For a chance at a future.
SIMON
As a professional gamer,
I’m focused and detailed,
Weighing all of my options.
After she left, I was lost, shattered,
And thought it was game over,
For me, for us.
But when I see her again,
There’s more at stake than just a game,
This time, I’m playing for keeps, ready for One More Round.

Against my better judgment, I stand and head for the kitchen under the guise of getting a drink. I open the fridge, surreptitiously trying to get her attention.
I close the door with a bit more force than necessary. Nothing. So, I walk up to the sink next to her and look out the window, too.
God, she smells good.
So damn good.
And she’s absolutely stunning. Her golden hair comes past her shoulders and falls in waves that make me think she’s been at the beach all day, though I know she hasn’t. Her slightly rounded nose and perfect pink lips are precisely how I remember them. But her dark-blue eyes always have a way of rooting out people’s bullshit, which is what I’m certain will happen if she ever looks up at me.
I’ve done my best to keep a physical distance from her. I don’t want to be too close, for fear that I will reach out and touch her, like old times. She was always so close to me when we were kids.
I brush her arm as I lift the pop to my mouth and take a drink. This startles her, but it only takes a second to regain her composure.
“What ya looking at?” I ask, not taking my eyes off the apartment building across the street.
“Oh, nothing. I was just thinking, I guess,” she sighs as she moves the bowl in her hands back under the running water.
“You guess? How do you not know?” I ask, using my same words from earlier, but in a gentler tone.
She looks at me this time, which is what I wanted. “Stop asking me questions if you always hate my answers.” She says it with a ghost of a smile.
Acting on its own, my shoulder bumps hers.
We’ve danced around each other for months. I haven’t touched her since that first night we met again as adults. I shook her hand because I was caught off guard. But today, we’ve touched twice. Where are the walls I’ve built?
She looks up at me with a hint of something in her eyes that I can’t quite figure out. Interest? Need? Maybe longing.
“I’m just kidding, G.” I smile at her. Something I haven’t done toward her in a very long time. Yeah, that look in her eyes is definitely longing.
She gives me a sad smile before turning to put the bowl on the drying rack. It isn’t lost on me that she’s hand-washing the dishes instead of letting the dishwasher take care of them.
“I really do want to know what’s got you staring out the window.”
She eyes me. “Why?”
I give this some thought. Why do I want to know so bad? Why do I care?
“Because I care?” Maybe I shouldn’t have asked. Yeah, I can see that was the wrong thing to say when she snorts and tosses an eye roll my way. A laugh escapes her lips but there’s no humor in it.
“Yeah, you care. Since when Simon? You can’t even look me in the eye. You don’t care. So, don’t waste your breath,” she spits out and starts shoving dishes in the dishwasher now, throwing all kinds of temper around with the task.
“Jeesh. Chill, alright? I guess old habits die hard. I can still tell when something is wrong. We do have a history. That won’t ever change,” I say, defending myself.
At this, she goes rigid. Ah-ha. Either bringing up the fact that we have a history or my telling her to chill—which she hates—has stopped her in her tracks; I’m guessing it’s a little bit of both.
“Just leave me alone, Simon,” she mutters.
“Is it your brother? Does he live here in Chicago? Are things better between the two of you or is he still an asshole with problems?” I can’t hold it in, I’ve got to know.
She puts the last cup in the washer and closes the door uncharacteristically slowly. She then wipes her hands on the towel, lays it down, and slowly turns to me.
Murderous.
If looks could kill, I’d be six feet under. She steps a tad closer to me.
“You … do not get to ask about him. You do not get to bring him up. Ever. Do not ever speak about him, or the past, to me or anyone.” Her voice is so low it makes my skin prickle.
“Uh, OK.” I gulp. This evil clone Gia is scary as shit.
She takes a step back, then turns to leave the kitchen.
Then as her words register, I realize.
“They don’t know, do they?”
She stops. Looks over her shoulder at me. Instead of anger, guilt clouds her eyes.
“No,” she says, and walks away.

“When you signing up? Women love a chef.” My best friend Derek is the back manager of Amore and got me the interview as head chef. Tonight, he gets to be both managers since the front manager called in sick. Sick is code for his new girlfriend is visiting from upstate. Mike gets sick every third Saturday, almost religiously.
Derek nudges me, and I remember that he asked a question, “Sign up?”
“Match Me. It’s where I met Callie. I also met Claire on there,” Derek tips his head at our staff, “Clint is talking to some woman on there too. You need to get out there. Enjoy the finer things the big apple has to offer.” I only roll my eyes. I didn’t come to New York to date. I came to work in a new environment and get some better kitchen experience. One of the female servers watches Derek and I talk, trying to be discreet, but it’s no secret that she’s hot for Derek. Even my player best friend knows better than to mix business and pleasure. Although that may be his only rule when it comes to women. Sharing a bedroom wall with him proves that point.
“I’m not signing up for a dating app.” I watch the crew start to ease toward the door, mentally preparing for our shift.
“Look at it like a hookup app. None of these women want to get married, if they did, they wouldn’t waste time with this shit.” Derek waves his black phone in front of my face, “Since when are you against getting laid?”
“You know I’m not against it, it’s just not my goal in life.” I shrug. Call me old fashioned but I can’t stand our culture sometimes. I’m a commitment guy, not around for hookups.
“You could still make it a priority, or just an option.” Derek leans back against the wall, looking smug with his argument. He has a point. I make enough money to take a girl out and having someone to talk to besides Derek’s dog would be nice. When he’s home, he has a date over, so I have taken over all of Dozer’s care, but that doesn’t mean I want to be the guy who sits at home with the dog. Although, Dozer is a great listener.
        “Well…” I begin.
“You are so easy,” Derek shakes his head and taps my phone in my pocket, “Match Me is the app. Put your profession on there as often as possible. Women love a chef. You cook, they reward you for it, I promise.” Derek bumps my shoulder and I start the app download.

RELEASE BLITZ with GUEST POST – Risky Play (Red Card #1) by Rachel Van Dyken

Why Sports Heroes Make the Best Book Boyfriends by Rachel Van Dyken

Hey everyone! I’m Rachel Van Dyken, author of over eighty (holy crap) books in multiple genres, one of my favorites being, sports romance! My latest book, Risky Play, is about two broken main characters who find themselves on a last minute holiday to Puerto Vallarta.

Pro Soccer player Slade Rodriguez is trying to lay low after finding out his girlfriend and his ex teammate hooked up behind his back, for over a year. Licking his wounds he changes teams and moves to Seattle, but isn’t ready to settle down yet. Needing time to himself, he gets on the first jet out. He sits next to Mackenzie Dupont on a plane and is immediately intrigued, especially since a few hours into the plane ride, they have single engine failure. She asks him what one thing he would do different. And they kiss. Once the plane safely lands, to protect his own identity, he gives her a fake name, Hugo. What he doesn’t realize is she’s famous in her own right, so she does the same thing. After all, she’s running away from a broken engagement. What follows is a whole lot of steaminess and taking chances with a complete stranger assuming that it’s just that, a one night stand, a two night stand. Whatever it is, Mackenzie’s obsessed with “Hugo’s” intense golden gaze, the eight pack helps, and the fact that he seems genuinely interested in everything she says. He promises the universe he’s going to keep her, but sometimes the universe is against us. Tragedy strikes and they go their separate ways only to meet again in Seattle, this time, sparks fly and not the good kind The “I want to kiss you, then strangle you, then kiss you again” kind.

I love writing sports romances because I think it adds this extra layer of pressure from the press to act a certain way. Not only does Slade have to deal with paparazzi but he has pressure to perform, to lead his team to the championships after training with another team. I think it brings in so many details from behind the scenes that we never think about when watching sports on TV. I’m fully dedicated to interviewing real athletes (and my last sports romance I interviewed NFL players). This time I wanted to focus on a sport that isn’t as huge here as it is internationally and really do it justice. These athletes eat, sleep, and breathe their sport, there isn’t a lot of time for a personal life and if you do have one, the balance is always going to be a struggle (not to mention the fact that Slade is still mourning). In this book, I wanted to introduce a really strong female character that wouldn’t let Slade project all those feelings and basically Mackenzie is the type of girl that doesn’t put up with his crap. I think it’s important to have strong female characters that women can look up to. I love that during the entire journey my heroine doesn’t give up. She knows her worth and demands that Slade recognize it too.

All in all it was such a fun book to write, I can’t wait for everyone to read it!

Excerpt: Risky Play by Rachel Van Dyken

I was kissing her again.

Maybe it was because it had been months since I’d had a decent kiss, since I’d jumped into the arms of anyone who didn’t know me by name.

I could be Hugo for a few days.

Hugo seemed spontaneous.

Hugo seemed relaxed.

Hugo seemed fun.

I sure as hell needed some fun.

I broke away from her kiss and trailed my fingertips down her chin. “So, now that we’ve established the plane didn’t crash and we’re here side by side, what did you have in mind?”

Ashley grinned up at me, her eyes a bit hesitant as she looked from me to the ocean. “Well, I’ve never gone cliff diving, I heard there’s a great place close by.”

My eyebrows shot up. “No offense, but you don’t seem like a thrill seeker.”

She laughed. I decided I liked the way her laugh relaxed me, made me respond with a smile and a need to kiss her again. “I’m not, trust me.” She sobered a bit. Her lips turned down.

I wanted nothing more than to press a soft kiss to the corner of her mouth just to see if it would it make it decide to smile in my direction again.

“But it would be fun, I need fun.”

I sighed heavily and looked at my feet. When the hell had I ever looked away like that? “That makes both of us.”

“Great!” She walked ahead of me into her penthouse suite, which matched mine even in color. I suddenly wondered what she did for a living. I mean I could afford it because I had been the highest paid soccer star in Europe for the last ten years.

The place was around three grand a day.

I eyed the large master suite as she ran around and then held up her hand. “One sec, I’m going to change into a suit, alright?”

“Great.” I smiled reassuringly. It would give me time to look around, not that I was stalking her, but I could never be too careful. I was still surprised she didn’t recognize me. And I knew when she did, this little facade, this freedom I felt in my chest, the easy way she let me breathe around her? It would go to hell, and I’d need another escape.

I thumbed through a few of the magazines on the table, and dropped the last one down just in time to hear the sliding bathroom door open and see a goddess emerge.

A one-piece swimsuit covered her body. It had a plunging neckline that showed off two generously sized breasts, and I immediately regretted not telling her who I was.

Because clothing tended to get pulled off, not put on, when I was in the room.

I eyed the scrap of material she called a swimsuit, my eyes raking over her muscular legs, her curvy body.

“Unless you’re jumping naked, you should change too,” she pointed out, then cleared her throat and looked away like she was insecure. Damn, the woman could make a man cut his own heart out for a taste of her special brand of sin.

I peeled my shirt off over my body and shrugged. “Ready.”

Her eyes went so wide I had to fight not to laugh.

I knew what she saw.

I had Instagram pages dedicated to my eyes alone, don’t even get me started on my abs.

Eight.

Tight, packed abs, all tanned and golden like I was the sun god himself.

“Uh, right.” Her cheeks brightened as she clasped her hands together. “Let’s go!”

I checked her out the entire time she walked ahead of me, and when she caught me staring I just shrugged and said, “Next time wear more clothes if you don’t want me to look.”

“You should talk,” she fired back.

“Misunderstanding.” I grinned. “I wanted you to look.”

She slapped a hand against my bare chest.

I laughed, and then grabbed her hand and kissed her fingertips. “You ready to jump off a cliff with a stranger you’ve kissed twice?”

“Once,” she corrected with a whisper. “I kissed you, you kissed me, we’re even.”

The doors to the elevator opened as I whispered under my breath. “Not for long.”

About the ELEMENTS OF FIVE series

One thousand years ago, there was one realm of magic. The Maison Realm. It held five kingdoms with five kings or queens, who worked together to keep the Maison people safe and ensure the balance of magic. Over the last five hundred years following the Fall, the great war that began the fracture, many of the kingdoms’ inhabitants intermated, and the magics soon became tied to one another in pairs. Except for the Spirit Wielders. The two remaining kingdoms are now converging, and the veil between the two is fading. Only the human realm lies between the two, and no one there knows there is a war surrounding them.

Over time, certain children of the Fall began to leave their respective kingdoms to venture into the human realm in search of the prophesied Spirit Priestess who is said to wield the Elements of Five and bring the two fractured kingdoms together. For the realms are dying without their sister magics. And soon, there will be no more power left to rule the kingdoms, for there will be no more kingdoms left to rule.

Excerpt
“Tell me, Audrey,” he murmured softly in my ear, “what’s one habit you wish you could break?”
Half a dozen things other flashed through my
mind—using a fork and knife for my pizza, flossing my teeth at night while watching TV in bed, other things that irritated my ex. Maybe the biggest habit I needed to break was falling for the wrong men, but even that wasn’t a habit.
Once. It happened
once. I just happened to do it Olympic-style, and lost everything.
I bit my lip—another habit—before blurting out, “I wish I was more spontaneous.”
Once my life didn’t go to plan with my parents’ death, I made damn sure I planned the rest. It hadn’t worked out. Was it karma?
Fate? The gods laughing at me?
“You seemed pretty… free-spirited earlier.”
Was this flirting? “Well, you know,” I laughed uneasily. “What happens in Vegas…”
My earlier show in the lobby with the champagne bottle was the craziest I’d probably acted since… well, ever. I couldn’t deny that it was liberating.
Maybe I needed to be a little wilder.
Maybe I needed to have a fling.
Maybe I needed to remind myself that one of the hottest men in the world was sitting close enough to irradiate my brain cells and make me think naughty thoughts.
The taxi wasn’t so small that we needed to sit hip-to-hip and shoulder-to-shoulder.  His breath was hot at the top of my ear, and I knew that if I just turned my head and tilted my chin…
I shook my head slightly, unable to even look
him in the eye. I didn’t have the guts. Dev wasn’t an adolescent boy anymore.
Now he probably dated supermodels and movie stars. And me? I had no game. Hell,
I’d already lost a few turns in the Game of Life.
“What about you?” I asked him as the car
stopped.
 “What about me?” he replied.
He pressed closer, reminding me that I needed
to get out of the car before he could. I wriggled over, trying to keep my skirt down and my shoes from slipping off.
Then I made the mistake of turning my head and meeting his gaze, like a kid who can’t help but look at the sun during an eclipse. His lips curved as he leaned his body into mine to make for the door.
My voice was needlessly breathless when I asked him, “Do you have a habit you wish you could stop?”
“Compulsive kissing.”

I sighed heavily as I freed my toes from the death trap heels. “Men have it so easy. You don’t have to put up with this kind of torture. No hair, no make-up to do.”

Dev shrugged. “What can I say? I roll out of bed looking like this.”

My mouth went dry as I pictured him rolling out of bed. In my imagination, he was wearing a lot less than he was now.

By the time we reached the door to my room, I realized I was running out of time to proposition him. I dropped my shoes to rummage through my purse for the key card. Didn’t I just have it, to show the guard at the elevator bank? Yeesh.

Dev waited patiently beside me. He even bent down to pick up my shoes for me. The movement of his head near my waist made me pause. Gah. Trying to ignore the tingling feeling in my stomach, I kept searching. Blindly I felt a few things, but funnily enough I couldn’t find my card—or my courage.

Oh wait, there it was. It was in the side pocket, along with a ton of sexual tension.

I cleared my throat and tried to sound casual. “Uh, do you want to come in? We could catch up… or something?”

“Audrey.”

Something in his voice made me look up from the depths of my bag. His eyes were like obsidian in the light lining the never-ending corridor. When he stepped closer, my back went up against my door.

“Forget I asked,” I murmured.

He ran his thumb over my jaw, and I reflexively tilted my head up to him. He said my name again, his voice even rougher and deeper than before. My bare toes curled against the carpet.

Still buried in my bag, my hand closed around my key. I was running out of time. Without really thinking about it, I popped up on my tiptoes and pressed a kiss to the beard-roughened space between the corner of his mouth and his jaw.

“Thanks for the escort.”

Somehow he moved even closer, because as I went back down on my heels, I found myself flat against the door and his body pressed against mine. It was hot and hard and… oh!

“Audrey?”

“Hmmm?” Was this like Beetlejuice? If he said my name three times in a row, would I come?

I looked up to see him lick his lips. He didn’t need his body to pin me to the door—his gaze did the job well enough.

“Give me your damn key,” he growled.

Audrey’s dark hair curled on her shoulders, hiding all the best nooks and crannies of her neck. It begged to be swept aside like a curtain. I reached out to push a bit of her hair back.

Wait.

“Uh, did I do that?”

Blushing furiously, she smoothed her hair back down, covering the little bruise a couple of inches below her earlobe. “Yes. You did.”

Well, damn.

“You don’t need to look so proud of yourself,” she huffed.

“I’m not proud.” Okay, maybe a little.

“You’re not?” I loved that she looked a little disappointed.

When I leaned toward her, I could smell the fruity, spicy scents of the hotel’s shampoo in her hair. Any closer and I’d be able to kiss the silky strands.

“Disappointed.” I lowered my voice. “I wish I’d been able to mark you in other places.”

“Oh.”

“Places that are normally covered up.”

“Oh.”

“I want to talk to you about your proposition,” I said.

“Oh god, I’m so embarrassed.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “Can we just forget it?”

I shook my head. “No, sorry. It was unforgettable. Literally.”

Now her hands flew up to cover her face, like a toddler pretending I wasn’t there. “You’re never going to let me live this down, are you?”

“No way.”

Gently, I circled her wrists and pulled her hands away. In so many ways, Audrey was more vulnerable now than when she was a child. When she blinked at me guilelessly, I found myself wanting to protect her like Brett and I had done when we were younger.

No, not quite like back then.

“I want to remember it for the rest of my life,” I admitted.

“What, like PTSD?”

This girl. I grinned at her. “No, like the beginning of something amazing.”

Excerpt

I huffed. “I hate surprises.” And I wasn’t crazy about blindfolds, either.

I’d dreamed and planned and been certain about so many things in my life, only to have them go poof! My parents, college, my job, my love life… I’d lived with disappointment for so long that it was what I’d come to expect. My mouth turned down at the corners, even as Dev’s hand caressed the small of my back with hypnotic, circular motions.

It was a toss-up as to which method of torture would break me first—his touch or the suspense. Hopefully we were alone in this elevator.

“C’mon…”

“It’s not a bad thing to leave a little mystery in life, Audrey.”

I rolled my eyes beneath the scarf tied around my head. “Are you kidding? Life is nothing but mystery!”

He made a humming noise of disagreement.

“Okay, tell me one thing that you are absolutely, positively, one hundred percent certain is going to happen tomorrow—other than the sun coming up or something stupid like that.”

His touch startled me, his thumb on my lower lip both disorienting me and grounding me in place.

“I absolutely, positively know,” he said to me in a rough voice, “that I’m going to want to kiss you tomorrow. And the day after that.”

When he dropped a ghostly kiss across my lips, it was so faint and brief that it could have been my imagination. His arousal was very real, I discovered, as he moved closer to me, his hips pressing into mine as my back hit the wall of the elevator.

“And I am ninety-nine percent certain that tomorrow morning, you will be the first thing I think of when I wake up and the thing that makes me smile all day.”

The doors opened with a ding. Dev tugged me forward by the hand, but I stopped in my tracks after half a dozen steps.

“Wait. Only ninety-nine percent?”

He chuckled under his breath, his hands going to the knot at the back of my head. The makeshift blindfold fell away, until he moved it around my neck with a swish. I blinked when I looked up at him. Note to self: mascara and blindfolds don’t go well together.

My heart was in my throat when I looked into his dark eyes. “So there’s a one percent chance that you’ll change your mind in the morning?”

His smile was a flash of white in the dim… well, wherever the hell we were. He wound the ends of the scarf around his fists, pulling me toward him.

“No, Audrey. There is a one percent chance that, tonight, you’ll be the death of me.” He pressed his forehead against mine. “But I’ll take my chances,” he said hoarsely.
